New York is just random attack central now

Soon they’ll be attacking Woody and Soon Yi on one of their strolls.

Suspect looks like a disgruntled actress. Are we sure this was random?

by Anonymousreply 1March 14, 2022 2:00 PM

Good. New York is full of assholes again!

They said this back when Rick Moranis got randomly punched in the head. Forget your bullshit Disney-fied version of NYC and your spotless hipster Whole Foods. Take us back to the era when muggings, graffiti, and pistols under trenchcoats were the norm.

by Anonymousreply 2March 14, 2022 2:00 PM

Have to escape NYC if you're just an ordinary law-abiding person without bodyguards and a bulletproof black Suburban.

Only the rich are truly safe in NYC.

Yet you will STILL HAVE defiant, jaded NYers insisting it’s the best place and they will NEVER leave.

I missed getting pummeled in the head by a crazed homeless person because my walk across Union Sq. was delayed 10 minutes, the woman is still in a coma.

by Anonymousreply 7March 14, 2022 2:19 PM

Something is fishy here. This isn’t crazy homeless person random crime - which is the main concern for me. It wil be interesting to see who this woman is.

Do all the old voice coaches in NYC live in Chelsea? All 3 I know live in Chelsea - and are 55+ year old women.

by Anonymousreply 8March 14, 2022 2:50 PM

R7 - it's not even that - I just wouldn't be able to get a job that paid my salary in another city. Also I get older, it's seems harder to get hired some place new with the same job security I have now. So my job is in NYC and we are likely getting called back to the office soon.

I'm considering NJ once my lease is up - but then you have to factor in commuting costs and whether it would be isolating to live in the suburbs as a single person.

Has anyone moved out of the city (but still close enough to commute) as a single person? If so - where and how do you like it?

Agree, R1 and R8, it doesn't seem random because she doesn’t “look like” the average homeless person with untreated mental health issues... the long white dress in NYC in March makes me raise an eyebrow though.

R9 Hoboken and Weehawken NJ are right across the Hudson and 10 minutes to Midtown by car, bus, ferry or the Path Train which runs from Hoboken to the WTC or up to Herald Square. It's a quicker and easier commute to Manhattan than from many parts of Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx.

by Anonymousreply 21March 15, 2022 2:45 AM

PS R9 Hoboken is lively many restaurants and bars with an influx of young people. Weehawken just to the north is a bedroom community clean, green, quiet, safe and less expensive than NY.

by Anonymousreply 22March 15, 2022 3:22 AM

R9, you aren’t factoring in the cost of living differences between NYC and other less expensive cities.

For instance, a colleague of mine lives in Manhattan with a base salary of $130k compared to my $110k base. The difference is that all things adjusted, I come out on top because my cost of living in a large southwestern city is over 50% lower than his.

Earning over $20k more than me, his income in NYC is the equivalent of someone making $57k here.

by Anonymousreply 23March 15, 2022 3:41 AM

At this point who the hell wants to live in NYC anymore? At least back in the late 70’s/early 80’s (the era so many still wax poetic about), cost of living was reasonable, even cheap, to offset the high levels of crime.

Now you’re paying top dollar to live in a city that is increasingly dangerous, and you can’t even begin to fathom enjoying all the city has to offer unless you bring in $500k or more. It’s ridiculous.

NYers delude themselves that no other city compares to their perfect oasis, while living paycheck to paycheck in their 600 sq/ft studios with no savings.

R9, the commute was easy from NJ into Manhattan when I was on my early to mid 20s, then I eventually settled down in LA.

I’m not sure I’d want to do that same commute now.

The only problem I had with it then, was the weather. Any commute sucks when it’s snowing.

The other issue I had was how limited I was when it came to socializing in NYC after work. I had to be at the station by 10:00 or 11:00 pm if I wanted to make it home that day. I’d be ok with that as an older person, but in one’s 20s and 30s? Those time constraints suck.

I oftentimes found myself crashing with friends who lived in Manhattan if I wanted to do anything after work.

If you haven’t any pets, that’s fine, but it a no go if you have pets.

by Anonymousreply 32March 15, 2022 4:57 PM

Not to worry R32 there is no nightlife in NY. PJ Clarke's on Third closes at 10. There is no traffic as most offices are empty and people are working remotely and due to the insane level of random violence have no desire to return to the office.

Most violent crime is committed by poor people. Violent crime tracks the economy, which is why it went up with the Covid recession. Attaching race to it misses the entire picture. To stop it, you don't go after all black people; you create more jobs and opportunity. You provide mental health care.

From Diamanda Galás:

Barbara Maier Gustern, Famed NYC Voice Teacher Murdered

Barbara Maier Gustern, the great vocal teacher and coach to me, Debbie Harry, Tammy Faye Starlight, Taylor Mac, Penny Arcade, and countless others--died on Tuesday, March 15 at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan. She was violently shoved onto the concrete at 28th Street & 9th Avenue, where Barbara was standing, getting into a taxi on the evening of March 10th. Barbara, 87 years old, was at maximum 90 pounds, 4ft 11inches tall. The woman who killed her is a large woman with red hair, who can be seen in this video:

Please call Crime Stoppers if you know or have seen this woman. Her students are shocked. All are on alert to find out the woman who did this.

Barbara Maier Gustern is a woman who gave enormously to all her students. I worked with her intensively for 29 years, upon moving to NYC.

She worked on Broadway in the last years of her life, and taught 10 hours per day, attending her students' shows at night. Barbara became known as the teacher to go to for singers in many disciplines. Barbara Gustern gave enormously to me. She understood what I was trying to do and we worked closely together.

Her background in music theatre and opera was extraordinary, and it prepared her to take on the challenges of all of her students. She was for many, their New York mother, and she enjoyed being available to her students at all times. Many of us are in a state of rage as well as terrible grief. We want her murderer to be found before interest in this crime wanes. This has to happen now. I kiss you, Barbara, great woman, great mother of so many.

I am too angry to say farewell.

This will happen only when your murderer is caught and incarcerated for life.

Hochul is finally getting it and trying to roll back some of the more insane parts of bail reform, She faces a fight with the “progressives” who support it. Hopefully some PAC is raising money to primary those progressives. If that doesn’t happen, voters should hold their noses and vote Republican in November.

by Anonymousreply 46March 18, 2022 3:47 AM

Why can't Debra Messing just accept that she's not a singer?

by Anonymousreply 47March 18, 2022 3:58 AM

I would never consider leaving NYC. I've been in NYC for 10 years now, and consider myself a tried and true New Yorker. We New Yorkers are a study lot, always persevering in the face of challenges. We face struggles head on and always overcome them. We're unique in that regard, I believe.

I had the best of the end of New York's golden age in the 70s. Now I rarely go in and don't miss it in the least.

I was seeing the original Prince/Sondheim musicals, legendary singers at the Met and the City Ballet under Balanchine. And for very little money.

There was no where else in the world to be. Now I can't imagine anyplace less I'd want to be. It is the world's cesspool for billionaires. I had to see Whistle at Carnegie because a friend was in it. I hadn't been on 57th Street in forever even though I had worked on it years ago and loved it. What a fucking dystopian nightmare.

by Anonymousreply 62March 18, 2022 12:09 PM

I think it was random, or maybe someone who was familiar with the victim in some way. The face of the attacker from the footage looks off, like you’re dealing with someone who is criminally violent or mentally ill. And if the victim had known the perpetrator, I think they would have been identified by now.

NYC is a fabulous place to live. When you walk outside, you feel like you've stepped onto a stage. The spotlight is on you, and you know everyone is looking at you with awe and admiration. It's a thrilling experience actually to be in the middle of it all. It's a constant swirl of euphoria. That feeling can be found nowhere else.

by Anonymousreply 65March 18, 2022 12:41 PM

by Anonymousreply 67March 18, 2022 3:45 PM

New York City is just about the most wonderful place to live. Nowhere else in the world do you find the wide of swath of cultures and ethnicities. There's a reason we're called the "capital of the world" and I'm beyond happy to call it my home. We New Yorkers are a breed apart from others. We have a thick skin and are able to muddle through the worst crises. We may fall at times, but we dust ourselves off and get right back on our feet. I think we New Yorkers are unique in that regard.

by Anonymousreply 70March 18, 2022 4:11 PM

r69, in a city of nearly 9 million people, the chance of one of these violent acts happening to you is practically negligible, especially if you live in one of the better areas of the city. Don't let the fear porn take away from the fact that NYC is a generally safe place to live and work. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else atall.

Yes NYC is expensive, dirty, often difficult and sometimes dangerous - it always has been. Living here is a trade off and those of us who think it is worth that trade off know what we get out of it versus the various costs.

In the 70s - 90s it was much more dangerous than it has been for the last 25 years or so, and it is now noticeably more dangerous than it was before the pandemic — but it is nowhere near the level that was considered “normal” during the 80s.

The city has changed in many other ways over the last 40 years, and living here is certainly not for everyone, but if you like it here the current uptick in crime isn’t as big a concern for most of us as it seems to people who Iive elsewhere - especially if you lived here before 1995 or so.

by Anonymousreply 82March 18, 2022 6:36 PM

New York is an ugly city, a dirty city. It’s climate is a scandal, it’s politics are used to frighten children, it’s traffic is madness, it’s competition is murderous. But there is one thing about it - once you have lived in New York and it has become your home, no place else is good enough.

by Anonymousreply 83March 18, 2022 6:54 PM

R82 is a clueless know-it-all and sure not a native New Yorker.

Please return to Flyoverville.
Improve the economy and increase wages

Sure, great idea, always has been. How Pollyanna of you.

But how does that correlate with getting mentally ill people to take their meds and try to function? For these disturbed people to want to become part of a functioning society? Lots of mentally ill people are violent, the current unproved assaults prove this. Many need to be institutionalized, but it seems the money doesn't seem to be there for that. You know, those pesky ReThugs are always trying to take money away from all sorts of programs which help people.

Sometimes the easy 'solutions' posted at DL don't work for a lot people, especially those who President Reagan gave their 'autonomy' to many years ago. Reagan allowed the mentally ill to run amok. Reagan allowed the violent mentally ill to terrorize the rest of us.
[R118] yet it was the bleeding hearts that whine and whine about how awful the state hospitals were... they call work programs slavery... and well, just bitch about everything, when they're not milking the system to the bone or launching lawsuits at it.

This isn't about work programs for welfare recipients, that's a whole other situation. This is about the violent mentally ill not taking their meds and a system which thinks it's OK for these people to not have any consequences for their violent actions.

Do you know how many mentally ill people are given their vulnerable children back? ACS cannot seem to to do their jobs either. Seems everyone is just collecting a paycheck until they can start getting their nice fat city pensions.

A friend was telling me about an unstable mentally ill neighbor who was beating up her teenage son, the son was taken away from her, yet, for some reason, ACS allowed her two keep her younger daughter. The more kids in a household, the bigger the welfare check. In case anyone cares, this woman is not Black, she's Italian and Puerto Rican. She also has an adult child who is out of her life. Three kids, with three different men. Quelle surprise.

The landlord doesn't care who lives in his apartments, as long as he has someone paying the rent. He'd probably rather have the government pay him than have a tenant who might stop paying rent. My friend stays in the building because they've been there forever, their apartment is large and their rent is low.

Anyway, the unstable woman fought to get her teen son back, now this sleaze bag has both kids with her. She's so 'poor' yet has a nicer iPhone than my relative! She cannot seem to take her prescription meds, yet takes recreational drugs.

These problems are across the board. Apparently there isn't a one-size-fits-all for these various situations. The city agencies are either not doing their jobs or they are so understaffed, they can't.

r124 I didn't mention welfare receiptents... apparently, you're unaware that many state hospitals had programs to reintegrate longterm patients back into society and often this was achieved via in-house work programs... while those were removed before hospitals faced widespread closure ... it did remain with prisons across the nation until the same argument was used again.

by Anonymousreply 132March 21, 2022 10:14 AM

R132, actually you DID mention: [bold]they call work programs slavery [/bold]. To me that alluded to Repubs wanting welfare recipients to earn their monthly checks.

While I do believe that so many of these people on welfare, especially those on public assistance from generation to generation, must be given ultimatums, such as only 2 children, then their checks and free housing get cut off. How can this be implemented when so many of these people think they deserve a free ride?

I also blame NYCHA for filling up their apartments with welfare recipients, NYCHA was formerly housing for the working poor. A few working class relatives grew up in public housing, both their parents worked. The parents got better jobs, then moved out.

Most of these people on welfare are not disabled, they simply don't want to work. Why work when you get a free place to live, food stamps, yet somehow can afford an expensive iPhone and $200 sneakers. It's the social workers job to weed out these grifters from the truly needy.

As far as the mentally ill, you still refuse to comprehend, how can any mentally ill person, who refuses their medications, get back into society? Most of these recent acts of violence in NYC have been perpetuated by mentally ill homeless people. Surely they are not taking any meds or being seen by any doctors.

by Anonymousreply 133March 21, 2022 10:34 AM

Have you been watching TV news or reading newspaper reports about all this random violence? All the current violent assaults in NYC have been happening in all sorts of neighborhoods, not just areas deemed 'dangerous'. Many of these attacks happened during the day.

There was some recent gun violence by the Queenbridge projects, which are in Long Island City Queens. Ironically, there are now $1-2million dollar condos just a few short blocks from Queensbridge. Silvercup studios is right across the street from Queensbridge.

A man was just run over in Soho while some asshole was doing car stunts, the woman with the shit smeared on her face and head her was simply waiting for a train at 5PM, the elderly female singing coach was pushed at around 8:30PM and so on, none of these incidents occurred near a housing project.

How about the man attacked with an axe in a LES bank while simply using the cash machine? Each attack has been more bizarre than the last.

I'm getting a different vibe here, that the people protesting in this thread how "New York is fine" are mostly the flyovers who simply refuse to admit that NYC has become more violent over the past few years.

Native New Yorkers know what's going on, but the flyovers, trust fund hipsters and wealthy ex-pats would never admit to this uptick in violence.

Violence crime tracks directly with the state of the economy. NYC has 9 million people so it will have alot of crime--people don't think in terms to rate but in terms of isolated stories.

NYC is emerging from a deep COVID economic depression. Jobs are only just coming back--very slowly but they are. Subways are not yet used with the same frequency as they were before.

As the economy improves, all will get better--it always does.

by Anonymousreply 187March 22, 2022 9:14 PM

R187, the tiles are probably not literally plastic, my mom' shower/bath area looks similar. The bathroom in her rental apartment was redone a few years ago. She lives in an apartment building.

The landlord kept the old sturdy large tub, but all the tiles by the tub/shower area were all removed and replaced with what I think is a fiberglass wall. It might as well be plastic, it looks so cheesy and is an ugly beige. In all the tenants bathrooms, the sinks were also replaced as were the light fixtures and toilets, that had to done as low-flow toilets are now the law in NYC.

The landlord needed to have all the tiles removed from every bathroom, there was water seepage over the years which went into the nearby closets and caused mold issues. Some tenants had expensive clothing ruined.

by Anonymousreply 188March 22, 2022 9:24 PM

Some comments from the most recent NY Daily News updated article.

Here are some interesting comments from some of her Astoria building neighbors: “It’s not an aberration,’ said one neighbor who described herself as a mental health expert. “There have been instances in the building.”

Another resident also knew Pazienza as a troubled woman. “She complains a lot at the management office and she’s had friction with people in the building,” this resident claimed. “I feel sorry for her fiance,” she said. “He’s a really nice guy and now everyone wants him out of the building.”

by Anonymousreply 202March 23, 2022 12:38 AM

My god what would be the reasoning for wanting her innocent boyfriend out of the building. Rotten people.

by Anonymousreply 203March 23, 2022 1:18 AM

R203, from the other thread: "Prosecutors say Pazienza stayed in the area for about 20 minutes after the attack, arguing with her fiancé on a nearby sidewalk before returning to the scene of the crime to watch as an ambulance arrived."

Was she arguing with him in person or on the phone?

by Anonymousreply 204March 23, 2022 1:26 AM

R203, I meant to say that if she was arguing with her fiancé, maybe the neighbors in the building believe he was aware from the beginning that she was the suspect

by Anonymousreply 205March 23, 2022 1:29 AM

R203, it's not so easy to get someone out of a condo building, not unless the BF is renting the apartment from the actual owner. Besides, he had nothing to do with his GF's actions.

Not sure if the BF was with her when she shoved the vocal coach, but on the surveillance video, she was walking alone.

by Anonymousreply 206March 23, 2022 1:29 AM

Or Italian, at least.

Will the ladies of The View discuss this story? They rarely if ever discuss the rise of gun violence and attacks in NYC the very city they broadcast from.

by Anonymousreply 219March 23, 2022 2:51 PM

Where did FNY go? I'm so sad she's no longer around to hate-post about DeBlasio being singlehandedly responsible for every bad thing that happens in NYC.

And, you know, NYC isn't for everyone. It's fine if you hate it. I probably hate where you live.

But non-NYCers have an inferiority complex. No one in NYC cares what your opinion is of NYC. No one gives a fuck about where you live. Do please shut up.

NBC reported a 13 year old Bronx girl was beaten up by a gang of males and females. Onlookers filmed the beat down. Not one person intervened!

The reporter interviewed the teen and her mom, their faces were not show. The teen said they kept called her by another name. It's assumed the gang were looking for someone else.

Besides punching and kicking her, the teen was beaten with a half gallon of milk, they removed her expensive sneakers and put them up on a lamp post. A guy who was not part of the gang, ran over to get a punch in! Then quickly ran off.

Dinkins was terrible and Adams seems to be making the same mistakes as Dinkins but just more corrupt. If a Bloomberg type Republican ran again they could win in the next election. I even think a Republican could win as Governor in NY but it would have to be someone with zero connection to Trump.

by Anonymousreply 246March 26, 2022 4:46 AM

Bloomberg allowed his commissioner of transportation nutjob, Janette Sadik-Khan, run amok with all those ridiculous bike lanes.

NYC, Brooklyn and Queens are not Amsterdam, these bicyclists do not obey any traffic rules, many people have been injured due to all those bicycle lanes. Now those Citibikes are also taking over valuable parking space.

I walk a lot when I run errands, I enjoy walking. I sometimes forget which streets in my area have bicycle lanes. I almost got hit a few times, of course, most of these bicyclists don’t seem to have a bike horn to warn people to move!

Not to mention, for people who own cars, those bike lanes have screwed up parking. NYC is much too crowded to focus on bicycles.

Bloomberg is a Republican, don't forget that.

True R274 I overstepped the boundary but so does the violence. The random violence and crime per square mile in Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens is concerning. Just this morning a man was beaten and robbed at a McDonald's on 7th Avenue and a 23-year-old woman was sexually assaulted at a Brooklyn subway station. There is a reason people in my office don't want to return and it has nothing to do with Omicron or COVID.

by Anonymousreply 276March 29, 2022 3:12 PM

Things are really bad in NYC, besides the daily violence, the homeless situation is getting much worse, especially when you hear that many homeless are living in the stairwells in various housing projects and in HUD subsidized buildings!

The local WABC news just reported a homeless man has been living in the stairwell of a subsidized HUD building for TWO years. Two women were interviewed about their efforts to get this man out. Two years and he's still there. He's actually taken over two levels of the stairwells with his possessions. One tenant joked, 'He's got a duplex!"

The building manager, of course, gave the WABC reporter a convoluted answer as to why they cannot get this man to leave the stairwell.

This is the kind of ongoing bullshit most of New York's working poor and middle class deal with everyday. The naysayers here need to STFU.

by Anonymousreply 277March 29, 2022 4:53 PM

And yet it's still impossible to get an apartment because rents are so outrageously high.

When is this crime/reality going to catch up with the rents? It did when everyone fled during COVID but it seems like no one gives a fuck anymore and there is no evidence of the masses leaving again when you look at apartment listings...

by Anonymousreply 278March 29, 2022 5:10 PM

People with lots of disposable income are taking Ubers, other car services and yellow cabs everywhere, most of them have no clue how dangerous the subways have become because they haven't stepped into a subway for years.

Working class and middle class New Yorkers, especially native New Yorkers, sure are afraid. You seem quite clueless about this situation.

These are both signs of the poor covid economy. As workers readjust and no longer come in from the suburbs, NYC will have to do a reset. Don't see a whole bunch of tourists yet either to energize the economy.

Of course, it's still only March. Hopefully, as the weather improves, tourists will return.

by Anonymousreply 289March 31, 2022 1:25 PM

In my nextdoor message board (which encompasses midtown east up through the upper east side), people are going wild over the rent increases. Some woman just got a lease renewal with an increase of $1300 per month in Yorkville. An increase of at least $700 a month seems to be the norm.

Everyone is saying they are moving - I just wonder where??

I'm thinking about Astoria, Jackson Heights or maybe Inwood when my lease is up....

by Anonymousreply 290March 31, 2022 1:35 PM
These are both signs of the poor covid economy. As workers readjust and no longer come in from the suburbs, NYC will have to do a reset. Don't see a whole bunch of tourists yet either to energize the economy.

You assume the majority of homeless, the ones you are now seeing all over every borough, were gainfully employed, with high paying or at least middle class solid jobs, before the "Covid economy", c'mon, you cannot believe that's true.

You must deduct that very few of the homeless people who are now randomly violently attacking people were already homeless and they are definitely mentally ill.

I see this one homeless man in my neighborhood, he's been around over 8 years, he wanders around the mini-shopping mall and people buy him food from the Burger King, I've sometimes bought him food. He sits on ledge by the parking lot, eats his food and drinks his beer.

The man sure didn't become homeless due to Covid, we weren't dealing with Covid 8+ years ago. This guy seems harmless, but the others who are randomly attacking innocent people, they need to be on meds. This man, of course, needs help, but you cannot force the homeless to into shelters. That douchebag President Reagan gave the homeless and the mentally that right. Not that Reagan cared about them, he simply didn't want any more government money to be spent on the homeless.

by Anonymousreply 291March 31, 2022 1:41 PM
I'm thinking about Astoria, Jackson Heights or maybe Inwood when my lease is up....

Very few NYC neighborhoods are affordable, especially Astoria, Jackson Heights and Long Island City. It seems all the neighborhoods which were once working class are now being gentrified.

Re huge rent hikes, it seems the only people I know who seem somewhat protected in most of these neighborhoods are those who bought co-ops and condos at low prices.

In the late 1990s, a work colleague paid only $25,000 for a huge six room Jackson Heights pre-war co-op. This woman got an insider price because she had lived in the same apartment for many years with her late husband and children. Unfortunately, due to the hikes in property taxes, which cooperators have to pay, there has been a surge in co-op maintenance prices, however, these hikes aren't as bad as paying high market level rents, especially where you won't get any of of the money back when you move. At least, with a co-op or condo, when you sell your apartment, hopefully, the seller makes a decent profit.

by Anonymousreply 292March 31, 2022 1:51 PM

Inwood, Astoria and Jackson Heights are affordable compared to Manhattan below 125th street.

by Anonymousreply 293March 31, 2022 2:05 PM

Yeah everyone has a different definition of affordable but those neighborhoods are far cheaper than the population options. Especially Jackson Heights and Inwood. Astoria near the subway is not quite as cheap anymore, most of the good deals there are far from transit. There is also Sunnyside which is a other good option for people looking for cheap rents.

by Anonymousreply 294March 31, 2022 2:38 PM

Yes NY's economy as a city is already suffering due to W work from home and less tourism r321. I'm well aware.

However the residential housing market is absolutely not suffering right now, and that is making it very painful for the people trying to find an affordable place to live.

R322 well the homeless are finding affordable housing as ABC is reporting on a standoff at a homeless encampment in the EV. And thanks to ABC News' 7 On Your Side an apartment building in Brooklyn has finally gotten rid of a homeless man who lived in the stairwell on and off for 2 years. And the neighborhood of Grammercy Park and the area around NYU is having problems caused by homelessness.

by Anonymousreply 324April 6, 2022 9:13 PM

Hey, New Yorkers! Move...or die.

by Anonymousreply 325April 6, 2022 9:18 PM
And thanks to ABC News' 7 On Your Side an apartment building in Brooklyn has finally gotten rid of a homeless man who lived in the stairwell on and off for 2 years.

IIRC, this was going on in a NYCHA building not in a random apartment building. For a long time, NYCHA hasn't cared about their residents, Have you noticed all the news reports about mold, leaks, rat and roach problems in those complexes?

Most of the NYCHA residents work, the service is not there anymore. Now they are finally getting to some repairs. For years if was a Band-Aid approach.

The money for repairs has been going in others pockets for many years. I remember when Bloomberg appointed some Wall Street guy to run NYCHA, what an insult. The man never had any real-estate experience, let alone ran any sort of building. That jerk was fucking disaster, to further insult the tenets, he was arriving to his office in limo every day!

Then the woman who came after him was yet another disaster, then, the Orange Menace hired a party planner to run the NY division of HUD.

For years re NYCHA management, there has been incompetence and obvious corruption across the board.

I have family who lived in NYCHA years ago, some of those apartments were as nice as the apartments in Sty Town and Peter Cooper. The grounds were very well kept. Not to mention, the vetting process for tenants was very strict years ago.

If you weren't on the original NYCHA lease, you couldn't remain when a relative, who legally held the apartment, had died. These days NYCHA management allows people who were not on the lease to remain. I guess if your pay off the managers enough $$$ they'll allow you to stay.

As the saying goes "the fish rots from the head down", NYCHA has some of the worst management in the US.

by Anonymousreply 326April 6, 2022 10:28 PM

R326 That fact that it was going on for 2 years and nothing was done about it until 7 On Your Side came to the rescue. is itself concerning. The guy shot up, walked around naked, defecated and pissed in the stair well. Who's in charge in NYC.? The inmates have taken over. Homeless and mentally ill people are not confined to NYCHA as there have numerous, virtually daily acts of random, unprovoked attacks in all parts of the city with complaints of homeless people starting fires in Soho, pelting prospective NYU students with eggs in the Village and a homeless man who has been terrorizing Grammercy Park residents.

It was alarming - he appeared completely unhinged. The woman scurried around him to catch a bus while he stood outside a bank and SCREAMED at her “you BITCH!!! You PSYCHO!!!!” I have no doubt he would have lunged at her if she hadn’t silently run away. A bunch of passerby crossed the street to get away from him.

by Anonymousreply 337April 8, 2022 4:52 AM

This happened in L.A., but I remember first hearing it from the NY Daily News or the NY Post. Imagine THIS happening to you:

Bucket of ‘hot diarrhea’ dumped on woman’s head by homeless man

A Los Angeles woman’s life was forever changed when a homeless man dumped a teeming bucket of runny feces over her head in Los Angeles in the summer. Her attacker received two months of psychiatric treatment and was on the streets again by August.

“It was diarrhea. Hot liquid", Heidi Van Tassel told NBC News Monday. I was soaked, and it was coming off my eyelashes and into my eyes. Paramedics who came to treat me said there was so much of it on me, that it looked like the man was saving it up for a month.”

The harrowing incident reportedly happened just off the Hollywood Walk of Fame, where Van Tassel had just finished eating Thai food with friends. After getting into her car, she was attacked by Jere Blessings, who is said to have “schizophrenia and psychotic disorders.”

“It was all inside my car because it was so much. He just kept pouring it and splattering it all over me,” she said.

The victim was taken to a hospital and checked for infectious diseases, the report said. There will be further testing.

Van Tassel said she wants to see her attacker get treatment for the psychological condition that caused him to attack her. He spent two months in a facility for people with mental disorders and was released before the end of summer, the report said.

The victim said she suffers PTSD from the grotesque encounter and believes form of counselling ought to be made available for people like herself who are left traumatized by such crimes.

“It was awful,” said Van Tassel, tearfully recalling the incident. "It changed my life.”

NBC confirmed there was a police report and that security cameras from downtown Hollywood businesses recorded the incident and immediate aftermath. Van Tassel asked Los Angeles police to view that footage and they reportedly decided against letting her see it.

She said she has “empathy” for her sick attacker, whose face she’ll never forget. It concerns Van Tassel that man is still on the streets, presumably untreated.

“What’s the next thing he’s going to do somebody?” she asked.

Yesterday following the worst subway shooting in the city's history. at least 12 people were wounded and 3 people killed in 5 separate outdoor shootings across Brooklyn and the Bronx. Was it really worse in the 70s & 80s?

by Anonymousreply 355April 13, 2022 2:11 PM

I lived in NYC in the 80's, 90's, early 2000's and I don't remember it being this bad. And I lived in Brooklyn in the 90s because of college. And it was a shit hole. The people getting killed back then were mostly gang members shooting each other, other criminals shooting each other.

by Anonymousreply 356April 13, 2022 3:36 PM

Totally agree R356 lived in NY from 1988-2006 and it was never as random, unprovoked, frequent and in all neighborhoods as it is now, and my memory is sharp.

by Anonymousreply 357April 13, 2022 5:24 PM

It's the randomness I couldn't cope with, in New York or anywhere. It just seems kind of chaotic, feral, moving more toward probable from possible.

by Anonymousreply 358April 13, 2022 5:36 PM
Was it really worse in the 70s & 80s?

It actually wasn't. The people stating it was cannot be native New Yorkers, they sure didn't live in NYC back then.

The attacks sure weren't as random and frequent as it's been this past year. In the 'bad' neighborhoods there were usually gangs shooting each other. I sure don't remember people getting assaulted in the subways or ATM bank lobbies with machetes or getting shit smeared on their faces.

If people were attacked it was usually to rob them, not because the attacker was mentally ill and picked someone at random to attack and injure or kill.

by Anonymousreply 359April 13, 2022 9:57 PM
And I lived in Brooklyn in the 90s because of college. And it was a shit hole.

Did you go to Pratt? The area surrounding Pratt was dangerous. Not anymore, it's now filled with trust fund flyovers and ex-pats and hipsters with money.

Such a blanket statement about all the Brooklyn neighborhoods is not correct. It depends on what part of Brooklyn people were living in during the 70s, 80s and 90s. Many areas were slowly going through gentrification, many are now fully gentrified. The original residents have slowly been priced out of many Brooklyn neighborhoods.

When you see $6000 apartments in Bushwick and are a native New York, you shake your head. My relatives, who grew up in Bushwick, cannot believe the level of gentrification there. A crappy apartment a cousin lived in as a small child, now rents for $2500. It's an old shitty, but now renovated, railroad flat! The building is over 100 years old. Cosmetic changes sure don't take away from the fact it's an old crappy building.

Brooklyn neighborhoods such as Brooklyn Heights were never dangerous, the working class and poor areas of Brooklyn were sketchy and somewhat dangerous.

by Anonymousreply 360April 13, 2022 10:13 PM

I attended high school in Manhattan. Back in the late 1970s, a school friend, who lived in Williamsburg, was afraid to stay in the city later than 7PM, this was a big strong guy who was afraid of his neighborhood.

Now all these rich trust funders and rich hipsters, most who claim to be 'creatives', are moving into formerly dangerous neighborhoods, such as Bushwick and Williamsburg. One of Sting's kids lives in Williamsburg, she's a working musician. Sting bought her an apartment there, it's in a new highrise building.

You cannot make a blanket statement about Brooklyn, it's filled with many different types of neighborhoods, it always was. Some neighborhoods were always much nicer and more expensive than others. Brooklyn Heights would have been compared to Forest Hills or a similar nice area of Manhattan.

Queens is by far the largest borough, but Brooklyn is the city's most populous.

The statistics from the 1970s - 1990s are not completely comparable. The NYPD has been caught lying many, many times about their crime stats.

A lot of crimes go unreported now. The types of crimes committed now has kind of shifted. Shoplifting and reselling items is probably more lucrative than robbing a store cashier. And they can resell in broad daylight. They advertise stolen stuff online. On Facebook, Instagram, all social media. It can even be a family affair, where their mom, sister, wife handles the resellin

Only a loser robs a cashier. If they get caught they can get a few years in jail. If a shoplifter gets caught they probably won't get jail time.
