Osaka is a fucking parody now. Of course she'll get lauded on Twitter for being "brave" and her snowflake fan contingent will undoubtedly label the harmless heckling as some sort of racist bullying.
Osaka's self-delusion is off the charts if she's comparing the horrible treatment meted out to Serena in 2001 with what happened to her today. She seems to be incapable of functioning as a normal adult and seems to have the mental capacity of a four-year-old.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | March 13, 2022 6:47 PM |
Osaka is a narcissistic cunt. I'm glad more people are getting tired of her act.

I've always like Osaka but if someone yelling "you suck" causes you to break down that much maybe you need to see a psychologist or take a break from the sport.

So please Naomi, find something else to do. Become a therapist, open a psychiatric hospital, donate to Ukrainian relief. Don't play a sport in a public domain. Take up pickle ball at your local country club. Wanting to take the mike to scold that idiot who yelled at you proves she LOVES this. That high-pitched, simpering voice that she has drives me insane. What the hell is her problem? She plays tennis for a living. I predict she'll never win another major. She's too much of a head case and the game isn't there anymore anyway.

Naomi is a mess and leaving this sport would be the best thing for her. She has plenty of money and can do whatever she wants with her life. It’s hard to feel sorry for her under these circumstances - other players have it just as rough…

R36 It's nothing new, i think Rune is with Moratoglou since he left Denmark to train abroad. He was one of the people downplaying the homophobic slurs saying he is just a kid
by Anonymous | reply 66 | March 14, 2022 10:36 AM |
Yes, r66. Mouratoglou went out of his way to side with Rune’s mother in defending her son’s obviously homophobic and obviously indefensible slurs. According to his Wikipedia page, Holger Vitus Nødskov Rune has been training at the Mouratoglou academy since 2016.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | March 14, 2022 11:19 AM |
Rune was very lucky that he did what he did at a challenger. On a tournament like Indian Wells, that type of behavious would mean losing sponsors.
To be fair he reacted way better than his mother and Moratoglou

I'm late, but I wish Osaka would stop using Venus and Serena's LEGITIMATE experiences just because she has no receipts of her own. She has always been coddled by the tennis world, even in her oh-so-horrible press conferences. She is so defeatist.
I remember when the crowd booed Venus in the 2001 Miami final against Capriati. Instead of crying, using delay tactics, and demanding to use the microphone and speak to the audience... she let her racquet do the talking, saved 8 match points and won the title.

I posted this in the last thread: "Would love to see Ukraine-adjacent Monfils take out tone-deaf Medvedev next round and then meet Alcaraz in the round of 16."
My favorite moment in the match was when Monfils wiped down the court to remove the broken racket detritus from yet another meltdown of another -ev with anger issues.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | March 14, 2022 8:26 PM |
I wonder if in Medvedev we're seeing a Thiem 2.0. Another 1-slammer who can't keep it together after they achieve their goal. He's not really been the same player since the US Open. Less extreme than Thiem's drop off, maybe, but clearly he's feeling the pressure.
Having said that, Monfils played great today, but Med definitely fell apart in the 3rd - 3 dropped service games.

I certainly hated Rune's teen homophobic outbursts, but I want to believe he now understands how wrong he is. I want to believe it was a very youthful indiscretion because he's so hot. He's definitely going to be a pinup kind of guy with those looks.

anyway, courier 1) didn't know what martina's record was in 1983.. (it was 86-1) and 2) while he got right that martina's loss was at the french, he mixed up the loss stating it was kathy rinaldi, when any amateur tennis buff knows it was kathy horvath....

While Berrettini and Paul might have dumped their girlfriends, Kyrgios has a new one who looks just like his last two girlfriends. They've been together two months and are now traveling full-time together. This will probably end badly.

Whoever is choosing and scheduling the IW matches needs a new job. Brooksby and Norrie as the stadium 1 prime time match is about as exciting as Wonder Bread. I thought it was a no-brainer that Monfils v. Alcaraz would fill that slot regardless of Norrie being the current titleholder.

This is why I have nothing against banishing all of them. Fight for your country the way the Ukranians are. If you choose to continue to just be afraid of this asshole no one should fell sorry for you. I don't care if you just don't wanna make waves. And the reason why some of these matches went so long for instance in the case of Isner, is because the player/players CAN"T return serve worth a damn and/or the serves because of racket strings and technology today are SO POWERFUL no one can break serve....
On a sidenote, Badosa's boyfriend is hot.... total male model face... add some more muscle to his already in shape physique and VOILA! smoking he would be!...

Why are they changing the rules just because of two matches that both involved ONE player? a ten point tiebreak at 6-6 in the final set barely differentiates them from any other WTA tournament.
So many fantastic matches over the years have ended 10-8 or 8-6 or something in the deciding set. What a shame.

Not sure if I put this in the right thread.
"Osaka is upset. All the time. She can't even handle interview questions. Maybe she's too woke to be a competitive athlete. "
There may be some truth to that. She's very sensitive, and with the media obligations, exposure, and of course social media, it may all be too much for her. That's a huge part of being a top athlete. I don't think being "woke" really plays into it. I guess if "woke" means "living your truth" and leaning into your established identity - them maybe. She seems to really lean into "I'm sensitive and this is all triggering and I don't want to do it." I don't doubt she actually feels that, but maybe instead of leaning into it, try to overcome it. Get a psychologist to help you learn not to give a fuck what other people think or do. That fan outburst was obnoxious as fuck, but shouldn't cause her to come unglued.

Just back from day at Indian Wells. Saw Berrettini vs Kecmanovic, Berrettini way too many unforced errors. (and very skinny calves....) Watched Kyrgios practice, he looked like a beast, didn't interact much at all with crowd that was very close. Watched Joe Salisbury and Rajeev Ram practice for quite a while. I'm new to this so wasn't sure who they were so asked the women down the row from me and it was Joe's mom so she told me their whole history. Joe shirt off smoking hot, Rajeev tall, very thin legs, huge feet. (Looked it up, size 13). He seemed very nice from what I could see. Then I watched Isner and Dimitrov. Isner has an incredible serve but not much past that, today at least. Weird physique, I know he is tall but seemed awkward. Dimitrov was a little pocket rocket. Saw him later off court and nice looking. Then I watched Rublev and Jurkacz. They were in the small court so we were right on top of them. Rublev is so skinny/scrawny. it was interesting to see. He was a bit pissy at times and I think it was closer than a lot of people thought it would be, Finished up with Monfils and Alcaraz. Best match by far, especially first set. Monfils just sort of lost in the second but Alcaraz played great.
Very fun day, next year I will go to an earlier session but this was great.

Brooksby to me is part of that bland new/new-ish crop (Sinner, Rune, Ruusuvuori, ADF, Shapo, Rublev) of slightly sinister Hitler Youth that fall somewhere between Children of the Corn and Village of the Damned.
by Anonymous | reply 233 | March 17, 2022 6:05 PM |
R233 I agree with that list with the exception of Rublev who's refreshingly kooky on and off court. His doubles pairing with Karatsev has a Bert & Ernie vibe.

Nick has been as motivated and focused as I've seen him in years this tournament for some reason. Not sure what's changed mentally but if he keeps this up the other ATP players should be quite worried. When everything's clicking, he's immensely difficult to beat. Fun to watch too.
by Anonymous | reply 245 | March 17, 2022 10:31 PM |
He won't keep it up. Nick can't click for more than a few matches in a row - and even that's rare.
If tennis were structured like MMA or boxing with one-and-done matches every few months, he might be a belt holder. Otherwise, greatness isn't looming. Your take on Kyrgios has been said for years, and repeated every time he goes through a good stretch. Then it falls a part.
That said, he LOVES the big stage and matchups against the top players - so that he's amped and focused in this match is no surprise.

Kyrgios should have been defaulted from the AO doubles match for hitting the ball into the stands and beaning that kid, but of course Tiley looked the other way.
by Anonymous | reply 253 | March 17, 2022 11:06 PM |
I honestly don't care who wins. I enjoy watching the matches. Consistency - from shot to shot and match to match is just as much a talent as shot making. Nick has plenty of some types of talent, but not others.
by Anonymous | reply 254 | March 17, 2022 11:07 PM |
Yeah, so much talent utterly wasted.
Would rather a guy that respects his opponents and the game and can comport himself with basic decency win every time.

Cmon Nadal. Let's go Rafa.
by Anonymous | reply 256 | March 17, 2022 11:07 PM |
I don't like when Kyrgios has his "episodes" either but the talent is undeniable. I wish there was a way to keep the intensity but calm the craziness

Just how many chokes can the other ATP guys come up with? Nadal has been gifted chokes all tournament. Korda with an epic 2 break final set choke, Evans choking the first set, Opelka choking the second set and now Kyrgios choking the first. Truly pathetic stuff that none of the guys can keep it together when things get tight.
Nadal dominated at Acapulco but at IW it's like the AO all over again. Nadal coming from behind through gifted games
by Anonymous | reply 263 | March 17, 2022 11:15 PM |
He is physically talented. But he's not any more physically talented than the top guys and much of the next level below that. But he is "flashier." Tennis history is littered with physically talented players who could never put it together mentally and/or strategically. And that's what Nick has - insane physical talent. But he was the shallowest of mental tool boxes and he often (though not always) prefers flashy plays over better percentage tennis.

of the guys left, the only one who is not a proven headcase due to youth is Alcaraz. Norrie is mentally weak against the best of the best, we know both Rublev and Dimitrov are total headcases and there's no way Fritz or Kecmanovic will win the title.

by Anonymous | reply 279 | March 17, 2022 11:44 PM |
I do like to watch Nick but I cannot sympathize with him getting on the chair for not stopping the crowd. He was so happy the crowd was so pro him in Australia. Before the Final the crowd was really outrageous when they played against non Australians and he lapped it up.
However, I'm not a fan of clapping for DFs, you can always claim an error was to applaud the play leading up to it but there is no defending clapping on DFs. But if he is going to pull an Osaka because the crowd is so pro Nadal, not here for that.

The next game when Rafa was serving, he said "Why are people trying to coach me.?"

Kyrigos has the ability and talent to blow Nadal off the court but he's a head case. If he got a mental coach, could you imagine what he could do. That's what frustrates so many people. That's why they are "coaching" him during the match. They can't believe someone with so much talent is a basketcase and can't get it together.

Funny, that Nick wanted to play doubles with Naomi. I actually think it might help her get some fight in her. I mean it could go completely sideways as who is gonna hold it together if things go south but would be fun to watch. Naomi said she was down with it if Nick was prepared to carry her because she su--, I mean she said she isn't very good at doubles.

Rublev at the bottom maybe but I'm not rooting for a Russian in the final

Young Grigor Dimitrov seems like a sweetheart to me. I wanna kiss him all over. His backhand is beautiful but he has absolutely no control over it. He only makes the regular shots. He has such a great swing you would think he could hit it right. He over hits it 75% odf the time..

meanwhile, Krygios didn't even LOOK to see where that racket went! ban his ass and see what this spoiled sociopath does for a living!.... did krygios apologize for anything after the match?...
like a trumpster, anyone who thinks he 's "entertaining" is fucked up in the head... in regards to connors, well, one thing krygios hasn't done that I know of his jack his racket like he was jacking off and making other lewd gestures like connors used to do back in the day...
by Anonymous | reply 317 | March 18, 2022 1:56 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 319 | March 18, 2022 2:02 PM |
R320.. i did miss that, but Connors did such antics REGULARLY while on the court not on a changeover where the entire audience would/could/did see him, so there you go....connors would regularly with the racket grip rub it up and down furiously in a jacking manner, among other behavior...
any old-timers remember the infamous 1977 u..s open match on clay against Italian Corrado Berazzuitti, where on a disputed line call on Corrado's side of the court in a close match and intense moment, connors BEFORE the umpire could get out of his chair to check the mark, ran over the other side and with his foot wiped out the ball mark and ran back on his side, like he was a funny charlie chaplin to Corrado's shock!...
JUST FOR THAT connors should have been defaulted on the spot! instead, some of the crowd thought he was funny for doing that and laughed along with Connors! shameful!...
and then later in his career in decline, Connors had the gall and audacity to tell younger players about respect???????!!!!
by Anonymous | reply 321 | March 18, 2022 2:31 PM |

Connors popularized men's tennis in the true Golden era - you newbies don't have a clue. He put big bucks in the path of today's players. He was crude, gamey and a jerk - but he filled seats and big ratings. Chrissie may hate him for outing her abortion, but she turned out to be a big ole phony in many ways. You can't please everyone. There should have been a Holy Trinity, BJK, Chrissie and Jimmy. Not that any of them were 'holy'.
by Anonymous | reply 325 | March 18, 2022 3:14 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 326 | March 18, 2022 3:15 PM |
There was no comparison between BJK, Evert and the execrable Connors, who desecrated the tennis landscape wherever he went. He and Nastase were just as foul as Kyrgios and Zverev are today. Borg and Vilas brought more to the game and the image of tennis back then than did Connors' Bozo antics.
by Anonymous | reply 327 | March 18, 2022 3:22 PM |
R327 you are a true idiot. The 1976 WCT final btwn. Borg/Vilas was a nightmare sleeping bill. Compare the ratings for any Connors match of that era. His brash 'Get me Laver' horrified the staid country club set, but turned on baseball, football fans who had ordinarily sneer at tennis.
by Anonymous | reply 328 | March 18, 2022 3:29 PM |
I won'r wallow in epithets with you, R328. You're right, Connors brought the level down to WWE or so and sold tickets. Maybe he would have sold even more if he'd taken a dump on court, which he pretty much did metaphorically.

In the Wimbledon centenary year, they opened with a parade of virtually all living Wimbledon men's and women's champions - except Connors, who blew them off at the last minute to practice with Nastase. When he came out for his first match the next day he was booed for about 5 minutes during the warm-up. He was actually quite shocked and said afterwards he realised he made the wrong decision.
by Anonymous | reply 332 | March 18, 2022 6:27 PM |
R330... you nailed it!
As If Connors wasn't the biggest phony of all...
asshole behavior rewarded because "hey, it's entertaining and he brought in non tennis fans" ...... tennis was and would have been just fine without him.. the only crowd that TRULY liked him was the unruly new york at the open crowd, half of them who were drunk and didn't know the game!...
by Anonymous | reply 333 | March 18, 2022 7:11 PM |
R333 you are totally IGNORANT of what was going on with tennis because of Connors. He was the PERFECT villain. And yet, he was relatable, because he (like BJK) was looked down on because his family didn't come from a country club. Ironically, Connors had a lot of Hollywood pals like Desi Arnaz Jr, Dean Paul Martin. McEnroe could have NEVER been the one to start the tennis boom of the 70's...he was a super talented rich kid, and a total snot brat. Mac went about Rod Laver being his 'idol' - Connors despised Laver and didn't hesitate to say so. I don't think Connors truly hated Laver, but he knew to trash talk him. His agent/manager Bill Riordan had a lot to do with creating him; once Jimbo dumped him, he started to rehabilitate himself, and then Mac showed up to displace him as US numero uno, and the tide started to turn.

It's not exactly Chrissie and Martina, but at least the current top ten actually seem to be developing rivalries and playing with each other (Swiatek, Kontaveit, Badosa, Sakkari, to a lesser extent Sabalenka, Jabeur, Krejcikova).

by Anonymous | reply 372 | March 19, 2022 3:18 PM |
R372... well carlos is playing better than rafa, has spent alot less time on court than rafa, is nearly half the age of rafa, has nothing to lose, so all points would point to carlos winning, then again, we know that rafa is a super being (all natural of course wink wink!) that despite all of this and allegedly nursing a bad foot he'll miraculously (no suspicions anyone?) be able to win, if he wins....

"She wasn't even close to as good as Graf, partially also because she was never strong and mentally fit enough to be a top player and a big representative of sports and society. "
She wasn't as good as Graf overall, no. She didn't have the same athleticism and despite some decent results, was never going to be a consistent championship contender on grass. She hated the bounce, hated the footing. A Wimbledon title, unless the draw opened up - sort of like how it did a little in 1994, was going to be difficult. But "wasn't even close to as good as Graf"? No. Pre-stabbing, Seles was one of the few players who could "genuinely" beat Graf. Graf didn't need to be off, there didn't need to be extenuating circumstances, no qualifers needed. Monica was incredibly mentally strong during her peak. And she did beat Graf back then - in three Slam finals. This isn't saying she's better than Graf, just that she was a great player and tangible rival. Yeah I get that the pro-Seles set can get carried away wit the "what ifs." But the pro-Graf set can oddly dismissive of Seles.

Luscious Liam Broady through to the semis in Phoenix. Btw is flirtatious Twitter bromance with Andy Murray is quite hilarious.

Andy's mainly trying to seduce Liam by 'seductively' eating grapes these days.

Seles attended the Swiatek-Halep match last yesterday. She looked good

Fritz team.
Alcaraz team.

Is it me or does fritz not look or act like the "smartest tool in the shed"?... in interviews he's almost the male osaka?!....
i have no doubt he loves sex and has to have it and/or he masturbates every day, he just "looks" the type....young dumb and full of cum...

most athletes aren't the smartest. Some of them are legit stupid and others just haven't had to use that part of their brain because they've had such success with sports

He has a 4 or 5 year old son (born 2017 when he was 19 or 20). Yeah, he's that guy. He would totally be USC frat boy if he didn't play pro tennis. That said, he usually comes across pretty good on camera. Pleasant, not really douchey or bro-ish. Don't know what he's like off camera. He's said having the kid forced him to be more mature.
by Anonymous | reply 385 | March 19, 2022 8:34 PM |
He looks like Clark Kent (but not Superman).
by Anonymous | reply 386 | March 19, 2022 8:36 PM |
Fritz also has that So Cal vacant quality sometimes. His mom was a Top 10 pro player.
by Anonymous | reply 387 | March 19, 2022 8:49 PM |
why would you bash your racquet off your knee to the point of bleeding? also risk injuring your knee?
Rublev just did that
Is it a Russian thing? I'll never forget the infamous Youzhny Miami meltdown years ago in which he made his own forehand bleed
by Anonymous | reply 388 | March 19, 2022 9:00 PM |
Daddy Fritz seems pretty chill to me, I like that. He also moves incredibly well for a tall guy.
I love his dimple. And I want to comb his hair.

"Daddy Fritz seems pretty chill to me, I like that. He also moves incredibly well for a tall guy."
He does move "pretty well" - way better than someone like Isner. This generation of tall guys is a whole different thing from the typical tall, but relatively slow tall guys of past eras. But he still doesn't move well enough to be a really good defensive player and consistently turn defense into offense. Korda and Medvedev are good examples of today's tall players who can still move great and play excellent defense if they need to.
Yeah, Fritz does seem chill.
by Anonymous | reply 390 | March 19, 2022 9:09 PM |
so after bashing his knee he bashed his hands leading to cut fingers resulting in the medical timeout after the first set. Rublev is nuts

Daddy gonna break here?

Rublev is almost psychotic and yet I find him endearing.

Fritz wins.
by Anonymous | reply 394 | March 19, 2022 10:16 PM |
I like Rublev, too, R393. I'd love to hang out with him.
But super glad for Daddy F!

I hope Fritz' ankle is not messed up for the final. That would be Nadal-like though to get an injured easy final opponent

Cmon, Rafa. I wouldn't count him out, although he is playing a younger version. He has the experience and the heart.
Although since has has to eventually lose, I hope it's to Carlos. A passing of torch so to speak.

r405, the "injury" is just the excuse if gets demolished. People with real injuries try to hid it as much as possible. Would come out and say oh I'm 100, no problem at all.
by Anonymous | reply 407 | March 19, 2022 11:07 PM |
damn. Alcaraz blows an early lead
by Anonymous | reply 408 | March 19, 2022 11:10 PM |
Broken back. Can the youngster meet the occasion, that is the question. Can Nadal grind him to dust?
by Anonymous | reply 409 | March 19, 2022 11:15 PM |
for fuck's sake
down 0-2 0-30 and now Nadal up 4-2. This is ridiculous.
by Anonymous | reply 410 | March 19, 2022 11:22 PM |
perhaps only NOW nadal wants to play his best match of the tournament?...
by Anonymous | reply 411 | March 19, 2022 11:24 PM |
is it something psychological with Nadal in knowing that he won't have to play Djokovic that just inspires him to keep coming back from deficits?
these other ATP boys just have no mental toughness
by Anonymous | reply 412 | March 19, 2022 11:24 PM |
Nadal is really good.
Alacaraz is good and everyone expects huge things, but he's essentially unproven in the upper echelon of the game. This would help - beating Rafa at a Masters level tourney.
by Anonymous | reply 413 | March 19, 2022 11:24 PM |
this match is basically the final
highly doubtful that Fritz will win the title he doesn't move well enough
by Anonymous | reply 414 | March 19, 2022 11:26 PM |
I generally agree, R414. But, if he consistently serves well and also returns well thus being able to get on top in more return points, he could win. He has to be "on" and be purposeful about being aggressive on serve and return. Don't be worried about errors - which sounds ridiculous.
by Anonymous | reply 415 | March 19, 2022 11:29 PM |
If anyone is wondering about that distinct sound of the ball coming off the racquet/strings vs. the more "ping" of past generations, tennis string has gone through a huge revolution in the past 15 years with the broad use of "poly" string (or poly hybrid) instead of natural gut. It's really changed the game to some degree.
by Anonymous | reply 416 | March 19, 2022 11:32 PM |
R415 I think Fritz would have a better chance on a faster court. The IW court is 1 of the slowest hardcourts on tour.

by Anonymous | reply 421 | March 19, 2022 11:47 PM |
Alcaraz is playing Nadal like he is a righty. I'm watching his service games and except twice he served wide. He is serving the way I was taught to NOT serve to lefties.
