Honestly, this might just make him snap and take Putin out himself. This man took such pleasure in owning Chelsea that to him it must be like losing a child. Even if he were able to sale it, he has lost his crown jewel. I don't feel sorry for him, though, because he chose to be friends with a mass murdering lunatic, and propped him up, so he is complicit and deserves to lose the club.

by Anonymous | reply 3 | March 11, 2022 2:28 AM |
Speaking plainly this has been a long time coming, and while current noise over Russian oligarchs and their money in UK is loud, don't expect many lasting changes.
For decades UK has basically welcomed Russians, Arabs and others with huge piles of money from shady sources with basically no questions asked. It was what UK does since losing Suez and being replaced as major superpower post WWII by USA, Britain basically became one of the top money laundering capitals of world.
Oliver Bullough has a new book out "Butler to the World: How Britain Became the Servant of Tycoons, Tax Dodgers, Kleptocrats and Criminals", that goes into things with great detail.
Even if proposed new laws go into effect they are riddled with so many loopholes thing leaks like a sieve.
It all fits into nature and culture of Britain; a chap doesn't tell another chap what to do with his money, nor dig too deeply into sources of it.

I thought that too, until I took a an International Relations class and the professor said you should do that, because it gives the person time to think and evaluate just what they are losing. If you just take it all of a sudden, it is a shock and they want to immediately retaliate. If you take it slowly, like this, they are much more likely to go to the dictator and be like hey we need to negotiate with the West, so I don't lose everything.

My understanding is that assets that can be traced to the sanctioned parties will be seized, so if it can be shown that Abramovich's six kids were set up in million dollar apartments that he provided, tough titties for them. I read that besides official government task forces, there are many 'volunteers working around the world to peel back the layers. Of course some of them have intimate knowledge of certain deals and might want to minimize their exposure, but it is serious, and poor thing Irina should be nervous. I would like to see Switzerland engage in the party, although they may never publicly talk about it I guess. If there's a point they should rescind all their privacy standards, this should be the time.

Switzerland could be tricky, Putin's concubine and the sprogs all have Swiss passports, and IIRC the twin boys were born in that country.
Still like mistresses past, present, and to come all that concubine has came from sources not her own.

Haven't given matter a sustained thought, but there must be reasons why Swiss aren't sending Putin's concubine and her sprogs packing back to Russia. Swiss news media seems rather quiet about the woman as well. This is surprising given how across Europe anyone remotely close to Putin or others sanctioned have been considered fair game.

Rumors on Twitter say Switzerland is getting ready to deport the girlfriend, but who knows if true.
by Anonymous | reply 117 | March 21, 2022 12:09 PM |
I have a Swiss passport. You can't get a Swiss passport by being born there so their kids do not have Swiss passports.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | March 21, 2022 4:08 PM |
Like the Swiss are gonna risk losing the billions of dollars they've help them launder over the years. As if.
by Anonymous | reply 119 | March 21, 2022 4:15 PM |
R119 the Swiss are sitting on that money. It ain't goin' nowhere.
by Anonymous | reply 120 | March 21, 2022 4:20 PM |
The Swiss aren't revoking any passports. That would be an admission of corruption which would have far-reaching implications and be adverse for their image. They will not do anything to jeopardise their reputation as reliable, discreet bankers. That's the difference between them and shortsighted Brits because sooner or later, sanctions will be lifted and accounts unfrozen. Oligarchs and the super-rich will move their money away from the UK having lost faith in British financial services. And places like Switzerland and the Caymans will benefit from that exodus.

Underestimates how much the Western world hates everything Putin and Russian and how long that's going to last. Sorry, Roman. Have fun in Moscow.
by Anonymous | reply 122 | March 22, 2022 2:15 AM |
First fuck with the Russians. Then the Chinese.
This has always been the plan and they will lose.
by Anonymous | reply 123 | March 22, 2022 2:25 AM |
I think the Russians and the Chinese are playing the long game. They know the West, especially the US, is in decline and they've and have thrown the first punch to end Western hegemony. Get rid of your stocks, people. Because the crash we thought would happen under Trump is coming anyway, and It will be much worse than 2007.
by Anonymous | reply 124 | March 22, 2022 2:30 AM |
Evidence, R124? The Chinese certainly play the long game, but the Russians evidently don't, and the West is not showing any conspicuous signs of decline (except for those elements of western politics who lean towards Russia and hopefully will go down with Russia).
by Anonymous | reply 125 | March 22, 2022 2:44 AM |
R124 is a Putin apologist (going by his posts). Didn't you know? Pootie's playing 4th dimensional chess!

I was planning on making an offer on a house here in Italy, but contact in real estate tells prices might crash all over Europe. If I end up getting a ton due to this invasion, I'll be a little conflicted.

All the seized assets should be liquidated even if the yachts are sold for scrap. The proceeds should fund refugee and rebuilding programs. The oligarchs should be forced to stand in bread lines and live in cold war era flats.

Apparently, Zelensky told Biden to go easy on Abramovich because he thinks Abramovich might be the best link to getting Putin to reverse course.

Reuters: Bulgaria's parliament scrapped a 'golden passports' scheme on Thursday that allowed wealthy foreigners to buy citizenship in the European Union country if they invested as little as 1 million levs ($562,366).
by Anonymous | reply 134 | March 24, 2022 12:39 PM |
Abramovich was on site in Belarus the second day of the invasion, and likely tried to talk to his BFF Putin, but couldn't get anything done. So fuck you Roman, hope you're distraught in Moscow forever.
by Anonymous | reply 135 | March 24, 2022 1:27 PM |
^ Tell that to Chelsea fans, r135. No one with that much money can ever be distraught. He said to have literal palaces in Russia and is already dropping money on a new place in Dubai.
Here's are his assets in sanctioned territories.

Sanctions automatically lifted the day Russia gets out of Ukraine. They are going to be part of any peace negotiations. The EU is still buying Russian oil and gas.
by Anonymous | reply 137 | March 24, 2022 1:57 PM |
Europe is already looking at how to phase out their reliance on Russian oil and gas because they've seen how it's left them exposed. Look for the sanctions to be permanent.
And if Roman liked his Russian palaces so much why were he, his exes and his kids all off living in the West?
by Anonymous | reply 138 | March 24, 2022 2:04 PM |
I have a feeling Roman loves Chelsea Football Club more than he loves Putin. He'll break.

[quote]Europe is already looking at how to phase out their reliance on Russian oil and gas because they've seen how it's left them exposed. Look for the sanctions to be permanent.
Nope. That's not how it works. When the war ends, banks and other companies will be under pressure to recoup their shareholders' losses. This is not high school where businesses let grudges get in the way of making money.
True, the EU is going to come with a roadmap to wean itself of Russian gas, but even the most optimistic projections say it will be at least until 2030 for them to hit their stated goal of reducing Russian energy imports by two thirds. And who knows what the world will look like then? Putin could be long gone and economies could be tanking left and right.
by Anonymous | reply 140 | March 24, 2022 3:34 PM |
R139 I've researched this and I truly don't believe that Abramovich has any hold over Putin or even access.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | March 24, 2022 3:40 PM |
r139 He obviously loves the club more than anything else he owns, but he had put it up for sale before he was sanctioned and I doubt he'll want to hold on to it after seeing how vulnerable it made him.
Roman wouldn't want anything to happen to Vlad. Vlad is the only thing stopping the Russian population from setting upon the oligarchs and burning them at the stake. None of them has the charisma to command loyalty from the population. They need Putin to protect their lives and wealth..

Yeah, you blocked me in the other thread when I was stating arguments for negotiations over sanctions to end the conflict, r143. We both welcomed your move as I said I'm more open to hearing all points of views and you're not. We're just different types of people, and that's fine.
In case you're wondering, over a decade of DL and I have never blocked anyone.

Like rest of oligarchs Abramovich benefitted from being in right place at proper time when Putin was doling out formerly owned state goodies. What influence any of them have now over Putin is largely debatable.
Indeed since Putin has pretty much made himself Tsar of All The Russias, it would be very unwise for any of the oligarchs to cross the man, or even get on his nerves. Like the Romanovs, Lenin, Stalin and rest Putin has no qualms putting people away he deems a threat or just doesn't like. Dozens if not scores of Russians from activists to politicians to even odd former oligarch are or have been put away on trumped up charges via orders from Putin.

No other football impresario is going to pour money and attention into any English club the way R0mes has, not even the biggest sides. The most generous an affluent owners other than him have still been financially stingy and gunshy by comparison. The EPL is about to have a very rude awakening on that score.
