As has been mentioned, they probably would've had a resurgence with the Adult Contemporary sound that was so big in the second half of the 80s. They probably would've needed outside producers, though, and perhaps Richard wouldn't have been too keen on that idea.

[quote] The marriage to Burris was a disaster. While Karen assumed he had his own money -- he drove flash cars -- it became apparent he was broke. He spent her money, asking for anything up to $50,000 at a time until she had nothing but investments left. He was cruel and impatient with her, calling her a "bag of bones" and telling her he would never have a child with her. Karen filed for divorce in 1981.
Karen filed for divorce within days of the interview.

by Anonymous | reply 24 | February 27, 2022 12:15 AM |
R22, of course she was. She was a lesbian who wanted children. I know it all too well because I am also a lesbian who wanted children (but never had them, as I am a rational person first - with 8 billion people in the world, and a fucked-up world at that, I thoroughly refuse). So, I know one when I see one. She was one.
She had a sweetness and a neediness, and an actual need for non-platonic, requited love; and for sex that is both tender and wild; and for true, honest commitment, all of which she probably never had. She came from abuse and horror, but she herself was good, and she tried to break out from all that bullshit, but couldn't, so she slowly killed herself.
It's really fucking sad.

Karen looked so healthy in R16. She must have just stopped eating after the wedding, as one year later she was a skeleton.
I believe she died of a broken heart. The shelved album, her failed marriage, and Agnes' mental abuse were too much for someone so fragile.

Anyone catch this creepy af reenactment of Karen's life played by Barbie and Ken dolls? It was, unsurprisingly, directed by Todd Haynes. The mother character especially creeps me the fuck out.

by Anonymous | reply 34 | February 27, 2022 5:17 AM |
R33, I've seen that film many times; it's one of my favorite experimental movies. The use of Barbie dolls seems weird, campy, and yes, even a little creepy at first, but if you really think about Karen's life, there is no better way to portray her story than with Barbie dolls. Karen was abused and manipulated by those around her in the same way that a child would manipulate a Barbie doll when playing with it. If you ever played with Barbies as a kid, you'll know that they are not very malleable. They are rather stiff, and it's not very hard to pop their arms off. They have an image of strength because they're plastic, but once you manipulate them too much, they break.
The way that Haynes destroys the Karen doll towards the end of the film as her anorexia consumes her could not be replicated with a real person. And how horrifying the doll looks towards the end is, unfortunately, not much of an exaggeration of how the real Karen ended up looking at her worst. There is an obvious irony to the use of Barbie dolls to portray Karen. The Barbie doll had been seen as an idealized image of the female body, and they used the doll to act out a story in which Karen's femininity was distorted by anorexia. You could also look at the dolls as a way of reflecting how the Carpenters were marketed by their record company as having a very clean, suburban, plastic image and how that plastic image was hiding something very sinister underneath (hence the degradation of the dolls).
Superstar was banned after Richard Carpenter found out about the film (and what it had to say about him) and successfully sued Haynes (he never got permission to use the music). Thus, the only way to watch the film is through bootlegs. Which is why the film is of such low video quality. I think that the degraded quality of the video in some ways adds to the film, as the video quality could be compared to how Karen herself degrades. I know that Richard eventually co-directed his own Karen film, but I haven't seen it.
The way the film uses music is very good. I really like how the film twists the song "Top of the World" during a montage showing ex-lax boxes and salads while also cutting to a scale (with decreasing weight each time it is shown). Karen probably had a sense of euphoria when she lost a lot of weight.
I also always admired the attention to detail that can be seen in the miniature sets and props.
I could probably write an entire essay on this film. lol

Those family acts were cute in the 70s (Donny & Marie, Kristy and Jimmy McNichol, etc.) but passe by the 80s. Richard wanted them to have a long and lucrative career but didn't realize the moment had passed. He was also very thin at that time and I think he thought it made them appear younger.
They should have just retired.

No way would the Carpenters have been on MTV in the 80s, they would've been marketed in the Adult Contemporary genre, which exploded as Boomers hit middle age. Bette Midler, Rod Stewart, Bruce Hornsby, Gloria Estefan were not MTV artists and they were racking up hits in the second half of the 80s. If the Carpenters had been around, they would've been in that category.

Diana Ross' "Do You Know Where You're Going To" was made for Karen, she should have made a cover.
If she hadn't died, they would have played Branson, the Indian casinos, Laughlin, NV. They wouldn't have remained "big" like they were in the early '70s, but they would have worked.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | March 2, 2022 12:33 AM |
Gloria Estefan and Bruce Hornsby were VH1 artists. If MTV played them, it wasn't very often. By the late 80s MTV was in the thrall of hair metal - they played far too much of it - and all the pop stars like Michael Jackson and Madonna.
If Karen had lived, the Carpenters definitely could've had a resurgence with the Adult Contemporary sound that aging Boomers loved in the late 80s.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | March 2, 2022 12:38 AM |
The Carpenters could very well have fit in with the Easy Listening/Yacht Rock type thing well enough. That could very well have been it, though, unless Karen found someone better to work with for a duet or perhaps just played the drums for someone else as a one off on an l.p. (perhaps for Christopher Cross or somebody, I dunno) in order to disturb the status quo because she could truly play the drums very well.
Fuck if I know.
One thing is for sure. Karen Carpenter was just quite something else. She's been dead for ages now and yet she still haunts some of us somehow. I highly respect your opinion R25 and totally agree with it.

R65 as someone who's friend went through the same thing, though thankfully it never got quite as bad as with Karen, it's 100% true. Short of tying her down and force feeding her, there's not much any friend could do. As with any substance or alcohol abuse issue, the one with the problem needs to take the initiative. What's said is in the end it did seem that Karen knew she was sick and wanted to get better but it was too late. Too many years of starving and fucking with her body did her in.

The Carpenters put out their sixth million selling album "Horizon" in 1975. Unfortunately, they followed it up with a real schmaltzy LP, with terrible single releases. Their next album "Passage" was great and (for them) experimental. Great singles, too, but by then it was too late....music tastes had changed. They never had another top 20 hit again, except for "Touch Me When We're Dancing" in 1981.

I find it disturbing seeing her with anorexia during her last couple of years. She looked awful. While anorexia was not much recognized in the general public as a disease/illness in the early 80s, surely those close to her recognized she looked extremely unhealthy and very nutrition deficient. Apparently she was under a physician's care, but her family and friends didn't seem highly alarmed about her condition. She was hiding anorexia habits, including the substances she bought for forced regurgitation. She needed a psychiatrist experienced in treating her disorder.

by Anonymous | reply 72 | March 3, 2022 12:51 AM |
Anorexia Nervosa really came into the American consciousness with the TV movie The Best Little Girl in the World, which was broadcast in May of 1981. It came at the peak of own illness that began on my birthday at the end of February that year when I turned 16 and weighed 165 pounds and swore I would never be fat again and stopped eating, stopped sleeping and was excessively exercising. By September I was hovering around 105 pounds and felt if only I could get below 100 pounds I would never have to worry about my weight again.
I used the book, movie and all the articles that were being written about it in magazines and newspapers at that time, which I accessed through my school library, as a “handbook” how to be the best Anorexic anyone could ever be. It played perfectly into my perfectionist personality.
Jodie Foster was supposed to play the role, but after stress eating at Yale due to the Presidential assassination attempt, Jennifer Jason Leigh got the part, becoming Anorexic during the filming herself. Karen’s death really resulted in a second wave of media coverage about it, making the early 80s awash in it for the start of the decade.

I’ve never understood the weird adoration for her or The Carpenters. It’s boring Muzak at best. The one thing I will give her is that she sounded the same live as she did on recording, a major achievement in the current recording world.
by Anonymous | reply 100 | March 4, 2022 4:28 PM |
^ That's because she mostly lip synced "live." Yes, even when they still did concerts. Almost always after they became famous. Richard was a control freak about the dark basement tones of her voice. And though she had near perfect intonation and could sing as well live - she couldn't reproduce the multi-tracked vocal depth of ALL their recordings. Karen was a mic singer - with the mic very close to her mouth. Because she had little power or fullness to her vocal production. Her tone was rich. But she was not a powerful singer. She lip synced all their TV specials and most of their concerts.
Richard seems proud of this. He's still nutty after all these years. Karen was a gorgeous impeccable STUDIO singer. This is her single one take lead vocal for a song never produced. The lead vocal is never meant to be the final product. It's just for instrumentation and arrangement purposes. Then when that's done - Karen would record a more perfect vocal. She never lived to record this actual song. Richard sweetened it up in his ASS.
by Anonymous | reply 101 | March 4, 2022 4:51 PM |
The fucking 'ancient white fags' troll really has a hate-on for Karen Carpenter. No, Karen did not lip synch in concert, at least not on a regular basis. They went to painstaking lengths to recreate exactly how they sounded on the record when they performed in concert. This has all been documented in many sources.
Lip synching on variety shows in the 70s was standard practice. Also, American Bandstand and Soul Train always had the artists lip sync. That was just a normal part of shows that had musical numbers in those days.

How old are you, R100. If you weren't there, of course the appeal wouldn't make sense. Their type of music and the way they dressed was considered kind of chic in certain strata. A great LIVE performance from the Carpenters, getting late in their game. Karen's voice is still flawless and bright and full of rich dynamic tones. She DIDN'T have a big range but she colored each not and phrase with a lot skill and variety. No pressure in her singing - long steady notes, beautiful intonation. Her smooth lines of legato phrasing without belting are really impressive. There's just enough wobble in this performance to prove her human. Good work.

Someone upthread pegged Karen as a Nixon girl. So true. The Carpenters were presented as an antidote to all those “awful” problematic Sixties stars like Jimi, Janis, and Jim Morrison. Once the counter-culture was neutralized the Carpenters were just another cornball act like Captain and Tenielle or Tony Orlando. They really had no future except maybe in Branson or second rate Vegas clubs.

Then how do you explain the streaming numbers for these 50 year old songs? Younger generations are finding comfort in these old clips, as unhip as they seemed. I don't see Gen Z listening to many Doors or Joan Baez songs.

Richard and Karen were exceptional at times. A.prime example is They long to be Close to You. They were in their element inside the recording studio.

Bullshit. The Carpenters had a big revival in the 90s with Gen Xers, who truly appreciated how good they really were. I definitely think if Karen had lived the Carpenters would've had a successful second act.
by Anonymous | reply 124 | March 5, 2022 12:57 AM |
But she didn't live and has been dead for 39 years. So that's that.
Karen had no personality or glamour. A lovely voice but a very bland singer. She needed more than those old hits to have a comeback in the 90s.
Branson would have been home to the Carpenters. A PBS special, with fundraising breaks.

Most chronic anorexics lose their hair and eventually their heart stops. That's the sequelae of that condition. Her brillo hair was the least of her worries. But of course she wouldn't see herself normally.
Anorexia is a mental illness. Karen was nuts before she was pooped. She couldn't even connect the two.
Move your food around your plate Anna Mae.
by Anonymous | reply 155 | March 8, 2022 1:50 AM |
R155 Yes, that's the issue that in part, makes anorexia so difficult to treat. Everyone with anorexia looks at themselves in the mirror and sees a distorted image of their bodies--so they still look fat to themselves even when their ribs stick out. Experts don't really know for sure if it's a delusion that the body appears larger than it is or a perceptual issue in the parietal lobes of the brain, but suspect it's the latter--that their brains actually have distorted perception. Either way, the distorted body image is why it is so hard to treat and so easy for anorexics to relapse.
Karen always saw herself as fat. That said, I thought she was recovering when she died and her heart just didn't have anything left after years of starvation and ipecac? Or was she still using syrup of ipecac to vomit just before her death?
by Anonymous | reply 156 | March 10, 2022 8:25 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 160 | March 10, 2022 10:10 PM |
R159 I think it was explained earlier, nutritional deficiency ravage the hair of anorexics and many experience it falling out in clumps. It’s beyond something like just conditioning it. Also, when thin enough, the body beings to sprout a coarse hair all over the body in an attempt for it to keep itself warm since it no longer has the body fat to do that.
by Anonymous | reply 161 | March 10, 2022 10:21 PM |

Karen had a lovely (close to contralto) voice and near always perfect pitch. She gave a sense of meaning to songs by the nature or her tone and downbeat phrasing. Yet both the music and her singing lacked importance. Many people love the SOUND of her voice, but I doubt she understood the words.

R200 , if you were going to have Karen do a Madonna song, it would be "Crazy For You", since it was written by John Bettis, who co-wrote many of the Carpenters songs (Goodbye To Love, Top Of The World, Only Yesterday) with Richard.
by Anonymous | reply 204 | March 27, 2022 2:18 AM |
Madonna, as selfish as she is - has often said that Karen Carpenter was one of her favorite singers. Probably not their music, but who knows? Madonna grew up trash and the Carpenters were all over radio when she was a kid.
Madonna has that warm golden tone center to her vocal production. Her best notes are in her lower register too. BUT, Madonna is a far more versatile singer and has more rythm, adventure, rock n roll and way more guts than Karen fucking Carpenter.
by Anonymous | reply 205 | March 27, 2022 2:59 AM |
Karen Carpenter couldn't sing Crazy For You. It's way too high for her voice and requires some vocal passion that she never showed.
Where Do We Go From Here, This Used To Be My Playground and most especially Live To Tell would be ideal for both her voice and vocal style.

I think Olivia knew all of the shit that went on between Karen and her family. She was pissed when Richard complained about Karen's stealing the Carpenters sound for her album. "You are the sound!" she told Karen. And if you see clips of the funeral service, she's practically the first one out the door, rushing to her car, visibly upset. There's no footage of her talking with Richard or anyone else, like Dionne or Herb Alpert.
But to Richard's credit, he did post a nice tribute to Olivia when she passed away.

Thanks to whomever keeps bumping this months old thread. It's a nice break from all the political, Markle and/or disease threads.

The 1978 ABC promo for R239.
A Carpenters special followed an Olivia special. Must see programming for any gays born in the 1970s.

Kareena Carpenter was not pretty like Olivia Neutron Bomb. And Olivia was a nice sweet funny person too. They shared a lot of reality avoidance in their lives. But Olivia was not actively self destructive.
Kareena was kind of bitchy and sarcastic - like ALL anorexics. It's a mental mind game that becomes a deadly illness if you don't care to understand it. She didn't care. Her revenge on family took her life and it caught her young.
Anorexics are more self destructive than alcoholics and drug abusers. Their high is only in winning at losing battles.
Karen had a nice voice. Beautiful low notes. But she's no contralto.

Was the 80s duo Sparks inspired by Karen and Richard in their style and overall look?

It is Richard's birthday today. Here he is with Petula Clark.

Why dint someone just get the girl a cheeseburger?
by Anonymous | reply 260 | November 5, 2022 2:34 AM |
She was taking fistfuls of laxatives a day, R260. A cheeseburger would have ended up in Karen's toilet in minutes.

I've always wondered if Jessica Harper's character from Phantom of the Paradise was loosely inspired by Karen. The song she sings feels like it was made for The Carpenters, they should have covered it.

Did Karen have a prolapsed anus?

Karen Carpenter died 60 years ago this week. My grandparents loved her.

Why didn't she just live on coffee and cigarettes?
by Anonymous | reply 265 | February 16, 2023 6:55 PM |
She once dated Tony Danza

R264, I think you meant she died 40 years ago.

So sad. Didn't anyone tell her she was waisting away?

Yes indeed, we too use "cookies." Take a look at our privacy/terms or if you just want to see the damn site without all this bureaucratic nonsense, click ACCEPT. Otherwise, you'll just have to find some other site for your pointless bitchery needs.
