The Family Stone & other Non-Classic Christmas movies we love
Well I don’t know about you gurls, but I have loved The Family Stone since it came out on DVD! I even owned it and now have it on Digital. I watch this movie every single year, and just finished watching it, and I adore this movie so much until the final scene set one year later, without the mom. I hate that scene and wish they left it out of the movie. They should have closed it with everyone being happy that Christmas night and that’s it.
I do find it weird how Meredith (SJP) was so ok with Everett (Dermot Mulroney) ending up with her sister Julie (Claire Danes) while she ended up with Ben (Luke Wilson) who really had nothing going for him. I guess it all balanced out, but I can not see someone like Meredith being with someone like Ben long term.
While Meredith is very pretentious and shrill, she didn’t deserve to be treated like shit the way she was. I felt very bad for her. Amy (Rachel McAdams) was just the worst!
I was 10 when My Best Friends Wedding came out and it was a sexual awakening for me, and I say this with honesty, because I know DLers claim every attractive man was an awakening for them even though they were already 40 when that movie came out… anyway, I used to be obsessed with Dermot, and that may be part of my love for this movie. He’s not only hot and handsome but naturally oozes sexuality. Very sexy guy.
In 2000 I would discover Colin Farrell and he took over that obsession (and ironically my mom used to confuse the two and couldn’t tell them apart).

I find it weird how everyone seems to be ok with that family treating Secretariat like that. The Stones were in no position to be, so uppity

Diane was so over the top in this movie.

I almost watched The Family Stone today but went with Edward Scissorhands instead.

The Family Stone is one of those films where one scene is more bewildering and contrived than the next and SJP sucks the life out of it, because she seems built for light comedy and little else. Danes looks nothing like her but comes off more sympathetically.

New in Town, starring the venerable Ms. Zellweger. I love this movie.

R9 I’ve never seen it. May have to watch it. I like those types of Christmas flicks.

R2. I watch The Cheaters every Christmas Eve—it is a carryover from my childhood when WGN in Chicago showed it every year on the 10:30 pm movie. It’s not a great movie, but I find it affecting—I suppose as much for the nostalgic associations as anything else.

Meredith was very cold and uptight but that was who she was. I never liked how the family treated her, like they were so above her, especially that cunt Amy. Did she even work? Go to college? Anything? Or did she just stay home all day being a cunt?
The deaf gay brother and his hubby were very cute together.
I would be all over Everett.

Dylan wishes he had the film success Dermot had.

Dermot was way more beautiful in his prime than Dylan ever was.

Well, if you like the full movie to the end of the Stones, because you like to be gutted for the holidays then you can do no better then the classic holiday movie Six Weeks. The Moores, Mary and Dudley, accompany dying ballet youngster to NYC for a magical Christmas including getting to dance in the the Nutcracker at Lincoln Center. She dies on the downtown number two train because they didn’t take the 1 local where they could have been right there at Roosevelt Hospital, but someone had to get back to the hotel early for reasons that are never fully disclosed in the movie.

I always liked and disliked Christmas with the Cranks all the same.
I found Tim Allen and JLC to be funny together but I hated how that town worshipped their daughter.

^^^^ I hated how the neighbors were so intolerant that they wouldn't allow them to skip Christmas

^ agree. That town worships Christmas, and I’ve actually been to small suburban towns like that, where it seems every person waits all year for Christmas!

I always loved Deck The Halls, starring Secretariat’s hubby and “bestie” Kristin Davis. It’s a stupid but fun enjoyable Christmas movie.

R25 because they were assholes and intolerant despite being so “tolerant”. They even gave her looks just for wanting coffee etc. it was ridiculous.

My new favorite is the very dark comedy SILENT NIGHT about a group of friends facing their last night alive.

I watched The Family Stone yesterday and and enjoyed it as always. Meredith was always so dressed up even to just hang out. Maybe that was to show how uptight she was. Until she got drunk, that is. Claire Danes looked better than usual in this film. The music was very good as well.

The Stones were uppity assholes. They judged Meredith from the moment she got out of the car.

Wasn’t Amy a big part of why r29? She was talking shit about Meredith to them because she met her while visiting and Meredith took her to the best, most expensive restaurant she knew only for Amy to ignore her the whole time and be mean to her.

Can't believe there are people who liked the Family Stone. It's a bit of a chore to keep up with whatever slights led to different peoples grudges through the movie. I keep Metropolitan on my DVR, I consider it a Christmas movie, and watched it last night.

I don't get the appeal of The Family Stone. I mean, if I had wanted to watch a feel good movie about a horse Ild stick to Seabiacuit, amirit?!?!?

SJP is a more uptight/uppity Carrie Bradshaw in this film. I lose all interest in sympathizing with her character when she launches into “but the whole nature/nurture thing” and says she wouldn’t wish being gay on anyone not because she’s homophobic, but because it’s such a hard life….blah blah blah. It’s a very outdated and uncultured view for someone from the city. It actually feels like thinly-veiled homophobia to me. Even if you HAVE that thought as a straight person, you would have the sense not to announce it to a family you’ve never met before at the dinner table.
At that point, I side with the family, although they’re annoying because the mom only wished her sons were gay, not her daughters….wonder why it doesn’t go both ways in the family? Seems a bit sexist.
Clearly I’m not a big fan of this movie.

R33 the movie came out in like 2004, not 2021. Most people still feel this way, yet alone 2004, where gays were still hated with no rights.
Living in a big city and being from a big city are two different things. Also, being from a big city doesn’t mean anything. You think there are no homophobic assholes in NYC or LA? I have a bridge to sell you.
