The Family Stone (2005)

We did a stupid team building thing at work where we had to tell everyone our favorite holiday movie. So I picked this one.

And I meant it.

In fact, it’s one of my favorite movies of all time, period. And I even love Sarah Jessica Parker in it.

by Anonymousreply 45January 3, 2022 11:45 AM

It's trash, and so are you!

It's a completely predictable chickie Christmas movie. The gay son who only exists so the family can be open-minded. The eldest daughter who only exists to give them a cute little girl hanging around the house. The dad (a college professor, of course) who is vaguely intellectual but mostly just vacant. And the obvious partner-swapping between sets of siblings.

by Anonymousreply 1December 17, 2021 11:37 PM

My favorite is Land of the Misfit Toys.

by Anonymousreply 2December 17, 2021 11:40 PM

Well you can kiss any promotions goodbye, OP. Unfortunate.

by Anonymousreply 3December 17, 2021 11:41 PM

Yeah, yoi might as well quite your job now OP, you are now 'that guy'.

by Anonymousreply 4December 17, 2021 11:43 PM

I agree with OP. Rachel McAdams and Diane Keaton are also good in it. It manages to be funny and poignant but not mawkish. And that house is fantastic.

by Anonymousreply 5December 17, 2021 11:44 PM

Love this movie!!!!!! SJP’s one and only outstanding performance, and Luke Wilson was surprisingly good. My sister and I always crack up at ‘BRAD? Brad Stevenson?!?’ Definitely a favorite that always makes me a bit teary at the end. Here here OP!

by Anonymousreply 6December 17, 2021 11:46 PM

I too agree with OP. I love this movie; watched it last weekend for the 15th year in a row.

It is hardly a “predictable” Christmas movie. The female lead is unlikeable and one of the other characters is dying.

The only thing “predictable” is an R1 being a total cuntrag.

by Anonymousreply 7December 17, 2021 11:50 PM

OP let his freak flag fly at work.

I remember when this movie was released in theaters, there was some backlash because the trailer made it seem like a feel-good, wacky family movie; audience members were stunned when Diane's character died of cancer.

I have always liked this movie. I was a teenager when it came out and SJP's character was how I envisioned I would be, when older, and meeting my significant other's family. I was neurotic and secretly anxiety-ridden about being liked back then, so seeing an adult trying to work those feelings while being gossiped about despite their best efforts was relatable and weirdly comforting.

The Deaf actor in this movie is so attractive! I was surprised that he's actually straight, haha.

by Anonymousreply 9December 18, 2021 12:24 AM

I think it’s a good movie, but I expected it to be funny and rollicking but it tore a hole in my heart. I actually don’t want to go through it again. It reminds me of Mike Leigh’s “Another Year” in its reminder that nice people can be so randomly cruel.

by Anonymousreply 10December 18, 2021 12:34 AM

Also one of my favorite Christmas movies. I saw it during my winter holiday trip to Stockholm in 2005.

“It’s like she’s digging for clams.”

by Anonymousreply 11December 18, 2021 12:42 AM

I wanted everyone to die by the end of it.

by Anonymousreply 12December 18, 2021 12:45 AM

I like it.

by Anonymousreply 13December 18, 2021 12:47 AM

I love that they had a gay interracial couple. I just wish we had seen them kiss and there should have been a shirtless scene with sexy Brian White

by Anonymousreply 14December 26, 2021 3:28 AM

Me too. I like movies set in waspy, academic-milieus and the fact that it was quite realistic about how hard it is to fit in with other people's families and how nasty "good" people can be.

by Anonymousreply 15December 26, 2021 5:24 AM

I remember loving the trailer and being totally disappointed by the final film. It needed more bite. I remember finding it bland and forgettable.

by Anonymousreply 16December 26, 2021 5:36 AM

I liked it at first watch, then it got worse and worse on every viewing, to the point I think it's terrible. I'm surprised DLers would like it.

by Anonymousreply 17December 26, 2021 5:41 AM

I liked it when I was a teenager, though now when I watch it, it’s a bit too treacly for my tastes. The atmosphere is great though, and there are some funny moments. Sarah Jessica Parker’s character is unaware of herself to the point of absurdity, but the family is commensurately terrible, and committed to misconstruing her so they can hurl more abuse her way—fortunately, they do redeem themselves in the end, preventing me from taking joy in the fact that Keaton’s character finally succumbs to cancer.

by Anonymousreply 18December 26, 2021 6:52 AM

Oh c'mon guys. When they all open up SJP's present and it's a framed picture of Diane Keaton as a young mother, and SJP doesn't know what everyone else knows, and Keaton says to her "you did good".

That was a wonderful scene!

by Anonymousreply 19December 26, 2021 6:58 AM

The director went on to do LET HIM GO, the superb Kevin Costner/Diane Lane thriller from last year. It's a perfect film. So its not surprising that there is quality to be found in some of the fluffier movies he did before

by Anonymousreply 20December 26, 2021 7:41 AM

I hate this movie so much. SJP should have burned the house down while the family slept. A last shot of her walking away laughing maniacally while the house burned would have redeemed this piece of shit.

by Anonymousreply 21December 26, 2021 8:04 AM

I've never wanted to watch this movie because Diane Keaton always gets on my nerves and I find her one of the most annoying actresses with her squeals, her affectations and the forced attempts at cutesiness that are vomit-inducing.

SJP used to be a charming actress (in small doses) in her LA Story days but over the past 20 years or so she seems to have morphed into someone who always plays a variation on an insufferable, pretentious, humorless Carrie Bradshaw.

Does SJP's character die at the end too? Does Diane make cute faces and try her tired old "Aren't I just adorable" shtick even on her deathbed?

by Anonymousreply 22December 26, 2021 8:33 AM

the movie was written and directed b a gay man, Thomas Bezucha

by Anonymousreply 23December 26, 2021 8:40 AM

It's one of the few movies I've seen where every character deserved a horrible death.

by Anonymousreply 24December 26, 2021 8:43 AM

Doesn’t this make Thanksgivings awkward? The girls can say they’ve seen and tasted both the brother’s dicks and knows which one is hung better.

by Anonymousreply 25December 26, 2021 9:10 AM

R25, do both sisters fuck both brothers? Ewww....

by Anonymousreply 26December 26, 2021 12:11 PM

I saw this in a movie theater and wished I could have my money back. My friend wanted to see it.

by Anonymousreply 27December 26, 2021 2:26 PM

Politically correct , pretentious, cold and rude family.

by Anonymousreply 28December 26, 2021 2:29 PM

Rachel pings !

I like this movie because it lets the main characters be awkward and make mistakes that would signify in other films that they’re villains, like SJP’s awful comment about the gay brother. But in real families people say the wrong thing and get yelled at, and then go on being family.

It also caters to the fantasy of many high-strung, anxiety-ridden people that some nice, easygoing chill person will come along and save us from ourselves, which I’ve found to be less accurate in life…

by Anonymousreply 33December 26, 2021 5:53 PM

No, R26.

SJP is Dermot Mulroney’s girlfriend at the beginning of the movie but ends up with his brother (Luke Wilson).

Her sister (Claire Danes) is with Dermot Mulroney’s character at the end of the movie but was never with Luke Wilson.

by Anonymousreply 34December 26, 2021 6:13 PM

I've rarely looked more luminously beautiful than here.

by Anonymousreply 35December 26, 2021 6:49 PM

So SJP has tasted both brother’s cocks and knows which one is hung better. Also awkward that she knows what kind of dick her sister is getting daily and what her brother-in-law looks like naked.

by Anonymousreply 36December 26, 2021 8:52 PM

The family was awfully rude to SJP

by Anonymousreply 37December 26, 2021 8:57 PM

Wouldn’t you be to some whore who comes in and sleeps with all your sons?

by Anonymousreply 38December 26, 2021 9:02 PM

It's a testament to Diane Keaton's innate charm that her character works at all in this movie. Even with a fatal disease, her character's words and behavior are pretty damn unlikeable.

by Anonymousreply 39December 26, 2021 10:02 PM

[quote]So SJP has tasted both brother’s cocks and knows which one is hung better.

This isn't the best picture of any of them but looks wise that was a downgrade.

R9- He might just be closeted

by Anonymousreply 41December 30, 2021 12:49 AM

R21 you did mean galloping or trotting right?

by Anonymousreply 42December 30, 2021 12:52 AM

R38 She didn’t fuck the Gay one, just two out of three.

by Anonymousreply 43January 3, 2022 11:11 AM

I couldn’t find this streaming for Christmas, but it arrived on Amazon Prime with the New Year so I watched it again. How is it that nobody, including SJP, recognizes the fact that she’s Jewish?

by Anonymousreply 44January 3, 2022 11:13 AM

It’s actually realistic. The Pollyanna Marys just don’t like it because it doesn’t gloss over the characters like some Hallmark movie.
