Queen Elizabeth told an aide to get rid of Obama: "I want to go to bed"

The UK's former Chancellor of the Exchequer said the Queen once asked him at a state banquet to tell then-President Barack Obama to leave because it was late and she wanted to go to bed.

George Osborne made the remarks at a talk with Lord Ed Vaizey, a former Tory MP and minister, hosted by the Old Pauline Club, an association for alumni of St Paul's School. Insider virtually attended the talk.

Osborne told the audience: "I was at a banquet — the state banquet in Britain for Barack Obama. And the Queen came up to me, and said: 'Will you tell the President, it's late and I want to go to bed.'

"And I looked over at — Barack Obama was having a great time, kind of knocking back vodka martinis with his mates, and I was like, 'oh my god, I'm going to be the person that has to go and tell him to go home.'"

Obama visited the UK in May 2011 and with the first lady Michelle Obama were the guests of honour at a state banquet held in Buckingham Palace. Osborne was chancellor at the time.

Obama also visited the UK in 2011 and 2016, but neither were state visits and no banquets were held.

The 2011 state banquet saw a gaffe from Obama, who saw his toast to the Queen interrupted by the band playing "God Save The Queen" after Obama started his toast by saying "To Her Majesty the Queen." Obama continued with the rest of his toast as the UK's national anthem was played.

Two years later, at the G8 summit in 2013, Obama repeatedly called George Osborne "Jeffrey," and later apologised for mixing him up with "my favourite R&B singer" Jeffrey Osborne, the Financial Times reported at the time.

Buckingham Palace and Osborne did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

How embarrassing.

by Anonymousreply 2December 1, 2021 8:12 PM

I think it's pretty clear that the Queen hates black people.

by Anonymousreply 3December 1, 2021 8:15 PM

Well, she seems to like the members of the Commonwealth. Maybe it's Americans she doesn't like.

by Anonymousreply 4December 1, 2021 8:22 PM

Geesh it isn't like she personally had to lock the doors after Obama left. If she wanted to go to bed, she is the Queen, she could have gone to bed and my opinion would be the same if it had been Trump.

How are you suppose to know when to leave, if he had left too early it might have been seen as being rude, stay too late it is rude, no win.

by Anonymousreply 5December 1, 2021 8:22 PM

15 years ago Fergie’s offspring were a laughing stock, even among devoted ‘Royal Watchers.’ They were basically the ugly stepsisters from Cinderella. And then there’s Camilla who until recently was a reviled witch. Now all three are being called on for ‘greater service!’

Is there any question that the monarchy is circling the drain?

by Anonymousreply 6December 1, 2021 8:23 PM

[quote] Geesh it isn't like she personally had to lock the doors after Obama left. If she wanted to go to bed, she is the Queen, she could have gone to bed and my opinion would be the same if it had been Trump.

Exactly.

Just have someone make an announcement: "The Queen will be retiring for the night."

People will stand and watch her make her exit, then they'll go back to their business.

Or does everyone have to leave the party, once she leaves?

by Anonymousreply 7December 1, 2021 8:26 PM

But remember that other State visit when the Queen had to ask her staff to tell Mr. Trump to let go of her Royal pussy?

by Anonymousreply 8December 1, 2021 8:27 PM

I find this story hard to believe. According to protocol, nobody can leave before the Queen does.

by Anonymousreply 9December 1, 2021 8:27 PM

That is what I thought R9

[quote] Don't Leave before the Queen. Debrett's states guests should never leave an event before the royal personage unless permission has been granted through a private secretary.

by Anonymousreply 12December 1, 2021 8:52 PM

It sounds as though Obama overstayed his visit and the elderly Queen simply wanted to get up and go to bed.

by Anonymousreply 13December 1, 2021 8:53 PM

What a bullshit story, wow mememe must have really paid her SS bill.

by Anonymousreply 14December 1, 2021 8:58 PM

I don’t believe it…there are protocols in place so that this sort of thing does not happen, and the C of the E knows better than to reveal a conversation between himself and HM.

by Anonymousreply 15December 1, 2021 9:07 PM

[quote]I find this story hard to believe. According to protocol, nobody can leave before the Queen does.

Pretty much what I was going to say, down to the wording. Can you imagine if he'd left first? He would have been pilloried if he'd left before her. Fox would have reported again it before Trump's state visit.

by Anonymousreply 16December 1, 2021 9:07 PM

Since protocol mandates that the monarch always leads an event, I see this simply as HM giving Obama a heads-up that she was about to end the party.

by Anonymousreply 17December 1, 2021 9:20 PM

What a rotten old cunt. She should go to bed and never wake up.

by Anonymousreply 18December 1, 2021 9:26 PM

Couldn't she have just ordered the lights turned up and the music shut off?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 19December 1, 2021 9:27 PM

If I recall protocol calls for the Queen to select a young stud to take to her bed and thereby end the party. Apparently the Americans did not provide her with suitable options, and she got irritable and wanted to leave.

by Anonymousreply 20December 1, 2021 9:27 PM

She should have simply put on a robe and bedroom slippers and piled on the cold cream and Michelle would have told him it was time to leave.

by Anonymousreply 23December 1, 2021 10:22 PM

Speaking of Margaret, she was a terrible abuser of the royalty leaves first rule. She did this at dinner parties, drinking too much, playing the piano and singing show tunes into the wee hours long after guests wanted to leave.

by Anonymousreply 24December 1, 2021 10:23 PM

Did anybody ask if she was OK?

by Anonymousreply 25December 1, 2021 10:29 PM

But she wasn't the Queen, so she can sod off.

by Anonymousreply 26December 1, 2021 10:34 PM

A poor way for the Queen to treat a guest, let alone an important head of state.

This seems well-sourced; the article states the author watched a virtual speech in which George Osborne openly stated this.

by Anonymousreply 27December 1, 2021 10:35 PM

Why does OP think the Chancellor of the Exchequer is an "aide"? American?

by Anonymousreply 28December 1, 2021 10:37 PM

I say, "It's about time!"

by Anonymousreply 30December 1, 2021 10:41 PM

This has nothing to do with the BBC. The linked article is in Business Insider and written by someone who attended a virtual speech by George Osborne:

[quote] George Osborne made the remarks at a talk with Lord Ed Vaizey, a former Tory MP and minister, hosted by the Old Pauline Club, an association for alumni of St Paul's School. Insider virtually attended the talk.

by Anonymousreply 31December 1, 2021 10:44 PM

[quote] And I looked over at — Barack Obama was having a great time, kind of knocking back vodka martinis with his mates...

So, what mates are they talking about? Did the Pres use the chance to party on with how many of his "mates"?

by Anonymousreply 32December 1, 2021 10:44 PM

By “mates” this old skunk probably means “other black people.”

by Anonymousreply 33December 1, 2021 10:45 PM

Dear Liz,

It's time. Go to the light!

Love, Barry

by Anonymousreply 34December 1, 2021 10:47 PM

Why would this make the Queen look bad? She was an old woman who was tired and needed to go to bed. But couldn't she have just gone up to the Obama's and bid them a goodnight and tell them they were welcome to stay? I'm not sure how the protocol works.

Margaret was such a nightmare. I have not read of one act of kindness or generosity attributed to her. I mean there have to be but all people talk about is how selfish, vulgar and mean she was.

by Anonymousreply 35December 1, 2021 10:52 PM

[quote] Why would this make the Queen look bad?

Asking an invited guest to leave your home is rude.

by Anonymousreply 36December 1, 2021 10:54 PM

Obama should have known to leave at a reasonable time. He's 35 years older than the queen.

by Anonymousreply 37December 1, 2021 10:56 PM

In other words, r31, an amusing after-dinner speech for the entertainment of the old boys, which no one expects to be accurate or completely truthful and poetic licence is widely expected. Business Insider wasn't actually there, but attended "virtually" and so didn't really have a feeling for the atmosphere.

No r33, that's not what "mates" means in British English. This was at a state banquet so the "mates" would most likely have been American officials.

by Anonymousreply 38December 1, 2021 10:56 PM

The Chancellor is the British equivalent to the US Treasury Secretary. He or she is not a Royal aide.

by Anonymousreply 39December 1, 2021 10:56 PM

I'm sure she just loved it when Donald Dump visited Buckingham Palace.

She probably asked him to stay the night.

by Anonymousreply 40December 1, 2021 10:57 PM

Excuse me...Obama is 35 years YOUNGER than the queen.

by Anonymousreply 41December 1, 2021 10:58 PM

From the FT article cited in the Business Insider article, date 20 June 2013:

[quote]George Osborne was the victim of an unlikely case of mistaken identity at this week’s G8 summit, after US President Barack Obama confused the chancellor with a black soul singer.

[quote]The chancellor’s attempts to explain the complexities of tax avoidance to G8 leaders were thrown off course when Mr Obama interjected on three occasions to indicate that he agreed fully with “Jeffrey”.

[quote]Mr Osborne battled on in spite of the US president having apparently forgotten his name. It was only after his presentation that Mr Obama realised his mistake and apologised.

[quote]Mr Obama explained that he knew who Mr Osborne was, adding: “I’m sorry, man. I must have confused you with my favourite R&B singer.”

I suspect the Queen is much duller than you’d think behind closed doors. Most people would have enjoyed the chance to talk to the Obamas.

by Anonymousreply 43December 1, 2021 11:05 PM

Considering how old the Queen was telling an invited guest that she needed to go to bed cannot in the least be considered rude unless you're an insensitive clod.

by Anonymousreply 50December 1, 2021 11:22 PM

by Anonymousreply 54December 1, 2021 11:27 PM

For normal people, sure, R43, but the Queen's been meeting world leaders for decades. They're probably not that interesting to her anymore.

by Anonymousreply 55December 1, 2021 11:36 PM

Most 90 year olds need to be in bed by 8pm at the very latest. Plus Liz was probably wanting her bedtime Dubonnet.

by Anonymousreply 56December 1, 2021 11:46 PM

One's mind boggles at a former Chancellor of the Exchequer publicly betraying what would have been a confidential request from the monarch.

Agreed - this makes no sense, either for protocol or plain common sense.

by Anonymousreply 57December 1, 2021 11:55 PM

Even if this visit were five or 10 years ago, the queen would have been 85 years old. Obama should know he's got to leave at a reasonable hour and not spend the evening holding court boozing it up.

Despite what you think, these visits are not "parties." They are formalities to pay a polite social call or professional visit. Then, good night. GTFO.

by Anonymousreply 58December 2, 2021 12:01 AM

R57 Yes, councilors of state are never supposed to reveal what HM says to them.

Also, I would say to the people using Debrett's to say no one leaves before Her Majesty, that is true for 99.99% of people. But, in terms of a state dinner HM and the President would be equal as they are both heads of state. Therefore, as Her Majesty is the host, it would be incumbent on the visiting Head of State to leave before she can retire or they take their leave at the same time. But, I don't know the actual protocol when it comes to British state dinners. I have attended two state dinners given by a US state Governor. In the first one it was over when the Governor decided to retire for the evening, but the second one involved another state's Governor and it couldn't end until the guest Governor decided to take his leave.

by Anonymousreply 59December 2, 2021 12:12 AM

The real reason was that she spotted Barack snatch a big pinch of her private reserve Kush from the small urn on the throne room mantle!

by Anonymousreply 60December 2, 2021 12:24 AM

She's a lot older than B. Obama. It was probably at least a couple of events that she attended w/the Obamas. I can see her just being tired and wanting to lie down.

I can also see B. Obama wanting to party and drink for a while.

by Anonymousreply 61December 2, 2021 12:31 AM

Why on earth would the Queen ask George Osborne to tell Obama to leave? That doesn't make any sense. The whole story sounds like nonsense.

by Anonymousreply 62December 2, 2021 12:34 AM

At her age the old broad should simply get up when she's ready to retire and tell her guests to enjoy themselves, but she's going to bed. I see no reason for her to be there till the last guest leaves. And frankly that would most likely be a hint to the guests it was time to hit the road.

by Anonymousreply 63December 2, 2021 12:37 AM

R62 To be fair, she was probably thinking if George Osborne went to talk to him, Obama would just decide it was time to leave. To get away.

Precisely!

That's the most logical and polite way to handle that type of situation.

She would be saying "time to leave," without saying it.

by Anonymousreply 66December 2, 2021 12:50 AM

There is absolutely no way this story can be true, and it fits in with a tradition of Uk politicians seeking to claim a close relationship with the monarch.

by Anonymousreply 84December 2, 2021 4:22 AM

It's pretty well known that Liz hates staying up for banquets and stuff like that. Apparently her and Phil scoffed their food down double quick, and of course when she was done eating, everyone was done eating.

It's also been said that's why the food is so poor at royal banquets - so no-one wants to take their time enjoying it, and they're fairly glad to see it taken away.

All that said - I wouldn't trust a word out of Osborne's perma-smirking mouth. Fun fact: when he was a member of the Bullingdon Club, the other members held him upside down and banged his head on the floor, each time asking him what he was. They didn't stop until he got the right answer - "I am a despicable cunt". All because he didn't go to Eton.
