The BBC is coming for the BRF. It's WAR!

A BBC documentary is to resuscitate painful allegations the Duke and Duchess of Sussex did not receive enough support while in the Royal family, amid fears the appearance of their lawyer on the controversial show will make it a one-sided narrative.

The second episode of Princes and the Press is expected to revisit claims the Duke of Sussex did not receive the same support in dealing with an intrusive press as the Duke of Cambridge would have done, in scenes which will infuriate former and current palace staff.

Allies of the Sussexes, including their biographer interviewed in the programme, have consistently claimed the couple were not defended against stories in the tabloid media.

Those who worked for them object to the claims, believing aides did their utmost to protect them in difficult circumstances.

The two-part documentary, presented by Amol Rajan, has caused upset at the three households of Buckingham Palace, Clarence House and Kensington Palace, which released a rare joint statement calling its contents “overblown and unfounded”.

A carol concert starring the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge was offered to ITV over the BBC reportedly amid anger at the corporation.

Aides believe programme-makers have not offered them a proper right of reply, claiming allegations were not put to them in full ahead of broadcast.

They have not engaged with the show, arguing it would give undue credibility to newspaper stories mentioned in it which they have never commented on before.

The Duchess of Sussex, in contrast, has authorised her lawyer Jenny Afia to appear on camera, to defend her against accusations of bullying former staff in the Royal Household and to discuss her recent court case against the Mail on Sunday.

The final episode, as well as a podcast focusing specifically on Prince Harry, Meghan and the media, will air on Monday and examines the period of 2018 to 2021.

It promises to include details of a “tumultuous time for the royals” including the birth of Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, the royal tours of the Sussexes and the Cambridges, and the “circumstances surrounding the Sussexes’ decision to step down from their senior royal roles”.

It will also detail the various legal cases launched by Prince Harry and Meghan, and “considers the impact Princess Diana’s experiences with the press and broadcasters had on her sons” - including the Martin Bashir scandal.

The programme is due to air just as the Prince of Wales is in Barbados to witness it become a republic, in a landmark ceremony.

The first episode included claims - strongly denied - that briefings about members of the Royal family came from within the palace itself

Former BBC Royal Correspondent Peter Hunt claimed no serious briefing between the three households would occur without the “approval of the principal”, saying: “So you have to assume they’ve done it with the knowledge of whoever they were working for.”

A joint statement provided by Buckingham Palace, Clarence House and Kensington Palace in response to the show said: “A free, responsible and open press is of vital importance to a healthy democracy.

“However, too often it is overblown and unfounded claims from unnamed sources that are presented as facts and it is disappointing when anyone, including the BBC, gives them credibility.”

A BBC spokeswoman said: “The programme is about how royal journalism is done and features a range of journalists from broadcast and the newspaper industry.”

The people pushing this agenda don’t want to get rid of the abuses of power, they just want to abuse the power themselves.

by Anonymousreply 1November 30, 2021 12:42 AM

I enjoyed the first episode and thought the people who came out looking bad weren’t so much the royals as the tabloid press, who lash out at the royals whenever they dare deprive the press of content to churn.

by Anonymousreply 2November 30, 2021 12:44 AM

The first episode was up on YouTube for a bit, but looks like it’s been yanked. I hope someone uploads the second!

by Anonymousreply 3November 30, 2021 12:46 AM

R3, please link it if so. TIA!

Bbc is fucking with the wrong people.

by Anonymousreply 5November 30, 2021 1:53 AM

Really who cares about a prince and his self obsessed partner now wife try to navigate the maze of enormous wealth and privilege in the English monarchy.. most people have the same problems with their families but are not worth hundreds of millions and arguing titles. Why don’t they take their enormous privilege and wealth and do what a lot of people who happen to have it- live privately, using their wealth to secure that privacy. Got news for ‘- it can be done.

by Anonymousreply 6November 30, 2021 2:27 AM

Who gives a shit? The royals have their rules. If you don't want to play by them, find your own path without relying on your heritage to give you importance.

by Anonymousreply 7November 30, 2021 5:40 AM

The BBC seem intent on biting the hands that feed them - general public and royals.

by Anonymousreply 8November 30, 2021 7:03 AM

The BBC is siding with the Stupidest Royal?

.Tee, hee.

by Anonymousreply 9November 30, 2021 7:11 AM

The one interesting thing that came out of the second episode was that Meghan's lawyer preemptively attempted to limit bullying to behavior that was engaged in "deliberately and repeatedly." In other words, she implied that Meghan has an out if she didn't "mean" to yell, scream and throw things, or yelled, screamed and threw things at an employee only once. This argument is, I understand, not consistent at all with British law.

Her own lawyers are preparing for the bullying investigation to produce some hugely unflattering stories.

by Anonymousreply 10November 30, 2021 7:46 AM

[quote] Bbc is fucking with the wrong people.

The BBC is not a bit player. They can play HARDBALL.

This is going to get interesting.

by Anonymousreply 11November 30, 2021 6:31 PM

how trashy

by Anonymousreply 12November 30, 2021 6:33 PM

The BBC is coming for the BBC.

The BBC is beginning to remind me of the woes these days of the CoE. Both are bleeding adherents by the year but keep doing the things that are driving them away.

Afia's statements about the bullying were filmed in May 2020, shortly after Philip's death and the Oprah interview.

Since then, her client has been revealed to the public as a perjurer.

Solicitors shouldn't function as PR flacks, it's a bad strategy.

If the Court finds for ANL and grants its appeal to overturn that Summary Judgement, Afia and the BBC will find out the truth of that old saying, "If you lie down with dogs, you shall get up with fleas."

And even if the Court does find for Meghan, in the court of public opinion in Britain, Meghan has already lost. We all know she lied to the court.

by Anonymousreply 13November 30, 2021 6:34 PM

^*May 2021 (not May 2020)

by Anonymousreply 14November 30, 2021 6:34 PM

Both the BBC and ITV have been losing viewers.

by Anonymousreply 15November 30, 2021 6:38 PM

Does the doc address William? Or is it just about Harry and Meghan?

And I don’t understand; is the BBC criticizing itself? Or just tabloid news? If it’s holding itself above outlets like DailyMail et al, that’s rich.

by Anonymousreply 16November 30, 2021 7:06 PM

I find the doc sympathetic to William. It argued that he only got branded as “Workshy Will” because the tabloid press was angry that he and Kate were living outside London and not giving them access to good pictures and stories when they were in town. (One of the tabloid reporters was bitching that Kate used her hair to block pictures, so they deserved the bad coverage….) It says Will adapted his behavior to be friendlier to the tabloids so they wouldn’t be so vicious, while Harry went the other way and attacked back—which didn’t turn out well for Harry. The tabloid reporters said both Will and Harry’s households were leaking bad things about the other.

I think Will was foolish to make such a big deal over this doc, it drew much more attention to it and he comes across as a person caught in a no-win situation (which is sympathetic for a future King!). Perhaps his objection is that it makes him and the BRF look like zoo animals captive to the tabloids.

The BBC isn’t criticizing anything, it’s trying to do a critical analysis in the sense of explaining to a layperson what was going on in the minds of the tabloids when covering these events, through long/detailed interviews with the reporters. The tabloids come off looking terrible (to me), but the BBC doesn’t say that.

by Anonymousreply 17November 30, 2021 11:18 PM

The second episode is up on YouTube under the title of the show, but filled with irritating zooms and background music, I guess to make it harder for the BBC to find it and take it down.

by Anonymousreply 19December 1, 2021 12:15 AM

Well, Meghan and Harry have moved on, to the Promised Land of Sunny California, where we don’t have tabloids like the UK. They don’t have to worry about the British media any longer.

by Anonymousreply 20December 1, 2021 12:26 AM

You're an idiot r17.

by Anonymousreply 21December 1, 2021 7:26 AM

R21 Second that.

They rin a "documentary" by a noted anti-monarchist that gives a platform to the victim narrative of the monarchy's most notorious ex-members, and you don't think the network was "criticising" anything? Not to mention a platform for Meghan Markle's lawyer on the bullying allegations, but not for anyone who worked for her or THEIR lawyers?

That programmer's aim was clear. If the BBC was too stupid to see it, they shouldn't be publicly financed. If they did see it, sndvran it because it's ther next hobbyhorse, they shouldn't be publicly financed.

And if, after the appalling fallout from Bashir's interview, they went on with this with a journo cut from the same bolt of cloth, the BBC shouldn't be publicly financed.

That programme made the case for ditching the licence fee.

by Anonymousreply 22December 1, 2021 10:47 AM

Hey moron @R19, nobody told Kate to fuck off -- she was only innocuously asked about Harry and Meghan.

But you know that, Meghcunt.

by Anonymousreply 23December 1, 2021 10:55 AM

Excellent points r17 and I agree.

People forget that William and Kate also got "hazed" by the tabloids early in their relationship and marriage, and it wasn't fair then, either. Before that, Diana had the same treatment, and prior to that Prince Andrew, who I remember was even trashed in a U.S. comic called "Bloom County" which was indicative of how saturated the media was with "Randy Andy" stories. It's before my time but I've read a few books recently which have talked about Margaret and her relationship with Tony and the press sounded like it was absolutely off the rails with its cruelty and snottiness.

The press always has to have a royal scapegoat. When Harry and Meghan became a couple, they became the new scapegoats, but it was a little different this time because Meghan is American, an actress, and biracial, and also times have changed and the younger royals don't believe putting up with this is part of the job.

by Anonymousreply 24December 1, 2021 11:05 AM

Harry and MeGain are lying cunts

by Anonymousreply 25December 1, 2021 11:10 AM

[quote] I think Will was foolish to make such a big deal over this doc

William makes a "big deal" about everything.

He has a horrible temper, and people really dislike him.

He's a spoilt cunt.

by Anonymousreply 26December 1, 2021 12:20 PM

Diana was trouble, Meghan is trouble. Don't marry drama queens.

by Anonymousreply 27December 1, 2021 12:41 PM

R26 YOU dislike him, not "people".

Deal with it.

by Anonymousreply 28December 1, 2021 12:44 PM

R26 - yes, people dislike him so much he's as popular as the Queen in polls.

by Anonymousreply 29December 1, 2021 2:32 PM

R27 - R26 oddly omits that Harry hasn't been as popular as the Queen in some time. His wife approval ratings are about 28% and Harry's are below 40%.

The 3 most popular royals according to YouGov are the Queen, William, and Kate.

Eat it, R26. We can all read and we can all find that shit out in 30 seconds.

Rajan has apparently issued an apology for calling William and Kate frauds, Charles a racist, and a few other juicy bits that he didn't let into the programme, after being photographed with Misha Nonoo, one of Meghan's best friends. The implication, of course, is that he's gotten a letter from William's legal team, and possibly from Charles', as well, as well as a bit of pressure from the BBC, as the remarks totally undermine what little integrity the programme had.

by Anonymousreply 33December 2, 2021 10:41 AM

He’s apologizing for remarks he made in 2012, not anything from the program.

by Anonymousreply 34December 2, 2021 10:44 AM

Donde esta the link for Part 2 of the documentary?

by Anonymousreply 35December 2, 2021 11:06 AM

R34 Read my post again. It says that those remarks weren't in the programme, and I made no reference whatever as to when he made them.

Their point is that he's a vicious tabloid journalist trying to make bank the way Morton and Bashir did on Diana's soul, and the BBC let him.

If he's apologising now, it's because he k kws he's either on thin legal ice, or that the availability of those remarks is undermining his attempt to become Martin Bashir.

And that hed want to be Bashir, whose lies to get Diana to do the interview had a direct impact on her early death. She dismissed the RPOs the BRF was still paying for because she believed Bashir's lies that Charles and the RF were using the RPOs to spy on her.

If they'd been there, they never would have let her get into that car, they're trained to spot drunk drivers, including royals themselves. They also would have made her wear a seat belt.

Rajan is just another ruthless scavenger willing to feed on other people's bones. He's in it for the mobey, celebrity, and a bigger career.

Those remarks should have told the BBC something.

It's time to admit that the BBC no longer justifies public support in the form of a licence fee.

That's the point.

Looks like the BBC leaked another damaging story.

Yesterday it was the Queen.

Today, it's William.

Hahahahaha!!!

by Anonymousreply 38December 2, 2021 8:59 PM

Stories about William texting with Britney Spears and others before he was married is a "damaging" story? It makes him look like less of a dork, if anything. Big fail there, BBC.

by Anonymousreply 39December 3, 2021 12:13 AM

The doc pulls no punches, it was well done.

by Anonymousreply 40December 3, 2021 12:45 AM

Can’t wait to see it.

by Anonymousreply 41December 3, 2021 12:57 AM

How incompetent are you r40 that you think this was well done?

by Anonymousreply 42December 3, 2021 5:59 AM

Rajan is a bitch.

The BBC are ratbags.

by Anonymousreply 43December 3, 2021 6:18 AM

The BBC realized that they won't get the goodies.

No Queen's speech at Christmas. No royal weddings, funerals, and so on, no "special relationship" that they've had with the royals for so many years.

No Queen's Platinum Jubilee, no Queen's funeral either. The BBC fucked up.

by Anonymousreply 44December 3, 2021 6:21 AM

It was well done r42. Lots of info

by Anonymousreply 45December 3, 2021 6:21 AM

Ick! Rajan is just so disgusting and skeezy for lack of a better word. All those gold rings and jewelry and ill fitting button downs. He looks like someone who lives in basement studio in Knightsbridge.

The Brits actually have to PAY for BBC through a television license. Could you imagine being forced to pay for CNN or any DLers worst nightmare, FOX NEWS? BBC is the new MSNBC.

by Anonymousreply 46December 3, 2021 6:49 AM

Yeah. He doesn’t project a very professional appearance, but I guess that’s to give the BBC a modern look.

by Anonymousreply 47December 3, 2021 8:12 AM

The long and slow slide of the BRF…

by Anonymousreply 48December 3, 2021 4:06 PM

Go, BBC!!!!

Bring down the Royal Family, and put an end to them once and for all!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 49December 3, 2021 5:17 PM

I second that motion at R49.

by Anonymousreply 50December 4, 2021 12:13 AM

The BBS is bleeding support at a far greater rate than the monarchy.

Bring down the monarchy? The BBC will be lucky if it can keep the licence fee.

by Anonymousreply 51December 4, 2021 12:40 AM

[quote]The long and slow slide of the BRF…

The long slow slide of the BRF....into every increasing popularity.

The Queen enjoys the highest popularity ratings ever, so high they make politicians weep with envy. The most recent YouGov polls put her at all-time highs. Along with....William and Kate close behind.

And guess who in the BRF had overwhelmingly negative numbers in the same poll? I'll give you two guesses (actually, three).

by Anonymousreply 52December 4, 2021 3:48 AM

There was a blind item years ago that people speculated was about Britney having her heart broken by William. They said it was what changed her dramatically and irreparably. That she had fantasies of becoming Princess/Queen and was crushed.

by Anonymousreply 53December 4, 2021 3:54 AM

Yeah, speaking of fantasies R53.

What you wrote is a complete and total fantasy.

In your own head.

by Anonymousreply 54December 4, 2021 5:27 PM

R54 it was just a blind item I read, dolt. Why so emotionally invested?

R56 - Of course not, dear. Why, you'd rather have a tooth pulled without anaesthesia than be the political editor of the BBC!

Now we know why Rajan made all those hasty apology for his "immature" slurs against William and Kate all those years ago when he didn't know any better.

Darling, if you want to be a serious journalist, you have to go for the long money and establish yourself as such, instead of the short-money notoriety you got by establishing yourself as completely biased trash journo not too choosy whose bones he scavenged for some spotlight.

Rajan and Martin Bashir: birds of a feather.
