Wayne Scot Lucas would buy items at a clothing store I worked in during the 1990s…he is very tall and big and had a habit of surprise hugging the young male salespeople and lifting them up as he did so. He did it to me once 30 years ago and I was so shocked that a grown man had just lifted me off my feet (and I am 5’11”) that I just kind of smiled in a dumb way when he put me down and released me but then ran the other way and into the stock room when I saw him coming in the future. It was an incredibly tacky publicity stunt meant to show what a bad boy Justin Timberlake had become, and how sexy and daring a nearly middle-aged Janet Jackson could still be. Instead of seeing it for what it was, people overreacted in the most ridiculous way imaginable and pretended that it was some sort of extreme moral transgression that merited a public outcry.

The crazy thing is, Janet Jackson was still relevant at the time and didn't really need to resort to something so basic and vulgar. For someone who once claimed that she was classy and Madonna was tawdry and crude, it is surprising how quick she was to pull one of the Material Girl's tacky promotional stunts as soon as she saw a slight dip in sales.

Timberlake went unscathed for the very simple reason that he didn't show anything, whereas she did. Still, as I have mentioned above, the overall reaction to what happened was downright absurd. Personally, I was much more offended by how small and mediocre their voices were while singing live, and how bad their acting was, as R14 has very correctly pointed out. He clearly moved to "rip off" the popper snap fasteners in her bodice in the most unnatural way imaginable (who the hell reaches across someone's chest to rip off their bra cup?), and made a bored expression that seemed to say 'OK, are we done yet?', while she stood there looking like she had realized there was a tomato sauce stain in her outfit.

In short, too much ado about nothing. Still, Janet fans are right: Justin Timberlake is a case of style over substance, and given the fact that he has as little talent as she does, it's shocking how successful he has become with next to no singing voice and poor dancing skills.

Exactly, up to that point she was considered a high class act. That stunt brought her into Madonna territory, something no one associates with class. Someone with her wealth and popularity usually have an agent, publicist, costume designer, makeup people, event promoter, and so on. That stunt was discussed by way more than just Janet and Justin ahead of time. It was conceived, developed and planned by a group of people in her employment and also coordinated with Justin's people as well.

I really don't think the general public cared as much as the FCC, Evangelical fringe, GOP, NFL and Les Moonves did. The public itself didn't cancel Janet. It was the people in power that did.

It might've gone better if she pulled the stunt at the VMAs or something. The Superbowl just wasn't the right time or right place. The reaction was a little extreme, though. An almost 20 year career erased in the blink of an eye over a naked tit. The "think of the children" angle was so absurd.
