[quote]Rider said he was thinking about something his mother told him earlier that day–the message in church that morning was to help the homeless. So Rider let Brooks into his home because it was cold and he was only wearing a short-sleeved shirt and no shoes. Rider said Brooks used his cell phone to call his mother, while Rider made Brooks a sandwich and gave him a coat to warm up. Rider said he couldn’t tell what Brooks was saying to his mom.
[quote]Brooks even pretended to be unware of the parade in town, asking Rider “if there was something going on downtown.”
What a culture clash. Rider from a high-trust culture where the social contract is still strong and the expectation is that a good person will help their neighbor. And clearly Christian homilies are taken very seriously.
And Brooks from a culture where you take what you can, how you can, from whoever you can, and try to fuck them up as badly as possible while you're doing it.
Platitudes and hand-wringing from politicians will not solve this culture clash.

Will some rich rapper post his $5,000,000 bond? I think Wisconsin does not allow for pre trial detention without bond. What the judge could have done is ordered his let out on a 1 dollar bond, ordered the bailiffs to take off the chains and bulletproof vest and to escort to the courthouse steps. Problem solved.

Of course you're right, R11, most people don't actually care but the circumstances of the story is what draws attention to it. Kind of like the snow shovel murders. People get shot every day, but that story made the news because of its bizarre circumstances.

Nothing odd about it, R15. It is the mass media's pattern of ginning up outrage about white crimes against black people, and suppressing or excusing or explaining away black crimes against white people. It's not subtle or hidden at all. It's right out there in the open.

I have no problem acknowledging our history of racism however I find it deeply ironic that the most vocal anti racists are the ones pushing for more criminal rights, no bail, and defunding the police, which all disproportionally harm communities of color. It shouldn't be surprising. Those who pretend to be the most virtuous tend to be the evilest.

R11 Sorry but this is not correct. A shooting of four or more people always receives commercial free cable news media coverage--even the spectre gets the same treatment until the 'no fatalities' message is broadcast and the commercials slowly reemerge. Also time of day matters, with daytime regents being the most covered. I' m thinking specifically here about the shooting at the warehouse in Illinois some years back, but this is standard procedure.

The first half of r23 is correct. The media's negligence over Kenosha is jaw dropping.
But the second half of r23 is nuts. The Charlottesville "protesters" were racists and actual legit white supremacists, and not the ones that the left sees under their bed at night and in the bathroom mirror. Trump should have commended it immediately and unequivocally, but he didn't because he's probably a racist and definitely a bigot and is himself shameless.

It's not culture, R3, it's choices. Brooks was a serial spousal abuser who was repeatedly jailed for violent offenses. He's who jail is for. Jail is for him. Why was he not there? He tried to run over his ex with his car ten days before these murders. That's attempted murder!
I do think there's going to be a political motive to this, in which case irresponsible media and politicians bear some blame too.
But nobody forces you to kill. This guy chose to do this and he knew what he was doing.

Yes, I did. I also saw what he said.
[quote] When returning to the White House Friday afternoon after an unexpected annual physical at Walter Reed Medical Center, Biden supported the jury system despite his anger over it.
“Look, I stand by what the jury has concluded,” Biden told reporters. “The jury system works, and we have to abide by it.”
In his formal statement, the president noted that we cannot “heal our country’s wounds overnight, but I remain steadfast in my commitment to do everything in my power to ensure that every American is treated equally, with fairness and dignity, under the law.”
Biden also said he was aware of how angry the verdict might make some — given the protests and riots that hit the streets in the past two years — urging Americans to “express their views peacefully, consistent with the rule of law.”

R62 that's because it's the norm in ghetto culture (and no, I am not using that as a blanket term for black people—but there is a specific faction of black people who do make up a large part of that culture) to continually birth kids you can't afford to raise, most of them fathered by irresponsible and reckless man-children who are counting on their rap "career" to take off—except it almost never does, so most end up falling into dealing or some other form of fast, unsustainable, often criminal moneymaking. It's a vicious cycle largely driven by poverty and circumstance, but it's also enabled. There are complex reasons for it that can absolutely be traced back to the historical treatment of black people in this country, but at the end of the day, individuals living in a society have to be held accountable for their actions. The buck stops with you, but only if you want it to.

R51 You don’t know why people would want Biden to visit? 6 people died, in an attack, during a Christmas parade. Of course the President needs to visit! And it has already been a few days. The first day or two may not be appropriate, but by now, he needs to be on the ground, meeting with victims families and speaking out against hate.
If common decency isn’t enough to convince you and him that he needs to visit, then maybe common sense that WI is a swing state and killing dancing grannies at parades doesn’t poll well.
Of course, if he DOES visit, the families will just get the same sob story about his Beau dying of cancer.

Brooks wouldn't have hurt that homeowner, though. It was a man. His beef is with females. Doesn't matter their age, he just hates them.
He didn't aim for the male cops, firefighters or EMS. Was "nice" to the male homeowner. The males that he hit in the parade were collateral damage. He was aiming for little girls and old ladies after he had tried running over the mother of child, had previous domestic disputes, etc.
If it was the pretty girl in the homeowner's picture who opened the door to Brooks instead of the guy, he definitely would have killed her.

I think that kid was incredibly kind to open up his home to a complete stranger, but will come to learn the world is a shitty place, and probably won't do it again. It's really sad that people have become so cynical that they rather let some someone die on the street than come to their aid. Clearly, being part of a community where people look out for eachother and feel safe in their own neighborhoods is a product of a now bygone era. The blame falls on inept or outright corrupt law enforcement that lets criminals loose, a media that preys on social division, increased homelessness due to lack of economic opportunities, lack of assimilation which produces competing cultures, and fewer intact families.

If anything, I'm surprised the right hasn't leapt on this even more, however, it's probably for the best that the right doesn't use the left's evil tactics. R163, I see a rap musical. "Sandwiches of Justice." Starring Jussie's Subway sandwich and Brooks' sandwich made by Rider.
It opens with a 1960 civil rights sit-in at a Woolworth's counter and the opening number "Where Is OUR Sandwich?"
The showstopper "No More Mayos!" brings down the house just before intermission.
The 11:00 number is a duet between Jussie and Brooks, "My Cold Dead Hands," in which they vow they will never give up their long-promised Sandwiches of Justice.

I agree with some of what you're saying, R162, regarding going easy in criminals. Legislation like that could very well have kept Brooks in jail and prevented what happened. Legislation like that could have prevented a lot of previous mass shootings.
We all need to take a realistic look of how what our representatives are voting for (or not) affect us in real life, instead of on twitter or in scary stories they gin up to frighten us to vote for them because of that one issue.

With his prior domestics, he might not have been released.
He had more than one, including a recent one where he assaulted the mother of his child and ran her over with his car. It also would have strengthened the penalty for sexual assault of a minor. And any offenses committed after that conviction. If the nephew was stalked, harassed or abused, he too would be covered under the laws protection.

R181 If a White Guy wasn’t a member of the KKK, but posted racist and violent anti Black remarks in social media, and then drove his car into a parade in a mainly Black area, do you think he would get the benefit of the doubt? Honest question.
When the Asian massage studio was attacked, it was immediately called a racist attack. This is despite the killer saying it was due to his antisex work stance. Still, most agree (including me) an anti Asian sentiment was a big factor. Why can’t it be the same in this. 6 people, including Grannies and children were murdered by someone who on social media had anti White rhetoric. No one should use this to call any sort of race war. This doesn’t mean that Whites are suddenly an oppressed minority. But why can’t the media just admit that it is very possible that the killers wel documented anti White hate lead to these attacks. Are we THAT indoctrinated as a society? If this isn’t seen as an anti-White attack then WHAT is?

The White House is reaffirming President Joe Biden's call to end cash bail following revelations that Waukesha suspect Darrell Brooks was out on $1,000 bail at the time he allegedly plowed through revelers at a Christmas parade.
Biden issued a sweeping statement on his website during the presidential campaign on ending cash bail.
'Cash bail is the modern-day debtors' prison. The cash bail system incarcerates people who are presumed innocent. And, it disproportionately harms low-income individuals. Biden will lead a national effort to end cash bail and reform our pretrial system by putting in place, instead, a system that is fair and does not inject further discrimination or bias into the process,' his website said.
A White House official defended the policy on Wednesday.

Assange 'split' Ecuador and Spain over Catalan independence
WikiLeaks founder met separatists and tweeted on the issue, which sources say triggered a backlash from Madrid
ulian Assange’s intervention on Catalan independence created a rift between the WikiLeaks founder and the Ecuadorian government, which has hosted Assange for nearly six years in its London embassy, the Guardian has learned.
Sources who spoke on condition of anonymity said Assange’s support for the separatists, including a meeting in November, led to a backlash from Spain, which in turn caused deep concern within Ecuador’s government.
While Assange’s role in the US presidential election has been an intense focus of US prosecutors, his involvement in Spanish politics appears to have caused Ecuador the most pain.
Julian Assange addresses the media outside the Ecuadorian embassy Revealed: Ecuador spent millions on spy operation for Julian Assange Read more The Ecuadorians cut Assange’s internet connection and ended his access to visitors on 28 March, saying he had breached an agreement at the end of last year not to issue messages that might interfere with other states.

Nature magazine released a comprehensive report in 2019 on the findings of EU intelligence agencies about Russian interference in Europe.
it basically boils down to this:
1. Russia is the main threat.
2. Russia conducts political influence activities, and the main purpose is to weaken the European Union (EU) and NATO.
3. Russia is targeting populations; their approach is divide and rule.
4. Russia uses minorities, refugees and extremists to further its divide and rule approach.
5. Human intelligence is an important covert tool of influence.
6. Cyber operations are another important covert tool of influence.
7. The energy sector, business and corruption are used as venues for influence.
8. There is an extensive use of allies and front organizations.
9. Russia is reconstructing reality and rewriting history to legitimize itself and undermine others.
10. Military force is the ultimate tool of influence.

If a whole country is a mafia state, like Russia clearly is at this point, it can cause a lot of damage. He knows in 30 - 50 years when everybody has moved away from fossil fuels his primary income has dried up and Russia is finished. Like a cornered rat he's fighting for survival. At this stage, he's got enough money to disrupt, bribe, blackmail and assassinate to get what he wants and he gives a flying fig about investing in infrastructure, education, healthcare etc. All the money goes to keeping him and his oligarchs in power.

I told him Russia was distributing this as disinformation to split the American left, he called me a corporatist neocon (pro tip: I am not), and it went downhill from there.

The idea that Russia is the sole source of propaganda underestimates 1) how evil the FBI, CIA, and the entire US defense industry is, as well as how much $ they have at their disposal 2) underestimates how crazy Americans are.

[quote] At least Trump called it correctly when it came to the Pulse shootings.
And the media and the FBI both told the public he was wrong even after they knew the truth. Comey's FBI even edited out the Omar's references to serving ISIS.
The FBI on Monday released a partial transcript of the conversations Orlando gunman Omar Mateen had with hostage negotiators and police dispatchers, and their dialogue reinforces that the 29-year-old was at least partly inspired by the Islamic State and intent on inflicting stunning destruction.
The Justice Department did not release a full transcript of all of Mateen’s exchanges with law enforcement, nor did officials provide any audio. Initially, the department redacted references to the Islamic State and its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. The decision to do that drew intense criticism from Republicans, some of whom alleged that the administration was trying to minimize the shooting’s connection to the Islamic State.
“Selectively editing this transcript is preposterous,” House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) said in a statement. “We know the shooter was a radical Islamist extremist inspired by ISIS. We also know he intentionally targeted the LGBT community. The administration should release the full, unredacted transcript so the public is clear-eyed about who did this, and why.”

R241, yes, this is not going unnoticed. It's also being framed as an "SUV crash." And headlines are all framing the perpetrator as the SUV. "Survivors report chaos after SUV plows into crowd," etc. Darn those gosh-darned violent SUVs.
Imagine the mockery and outrage if Fox consistently referred to Arbery as having been accidentally killed by a "gun discharge."
This is the same type of cutesy semantic trick we saw in the Virginia races, where people kept insisting that "CRT isn't taught in schools" and then mansplaining that statement condescendingly with a very legalistic, narrow definition of CRT, thinking it would shut complainers up.
I don't think the people engaging in this realize that semantic word games like "an SUV ran over some people" and "CRT is not taught" are not very persuasive to most people. It comes across as gaslighting. Once you realize you're being gaslit, you can't un-see it, and it's enraging.

This is always how populist demagogues get into office. They speak the thoughts of people who feel they've been lied to and cheated and gaslighted.
If the media and the Democratic Party at large don't wake up and acknowledge reality, another populist leader is inevitable. If it's not Trump, it'll be someone else. R266 One silver lining to the Rittenhouse saga is that Republicans have been preaching against rioting and domestic terrorism for more than a year now. They can't turn on a dime and start advocating for violence. They've been borrowing a lot from othe language and talking point of peace activists in the past couple of years.
Conservatives are now also, because of Rittenhouse, strongly versed in the ins and outs of self-defense law so there isn't nearly the chance of someone going vigilante that there could be. Wisconsin's self-defense laws are pretty typical, so they'd essentially apply in most states.

"Nearly 60% of 749 mass shootings between 2014 and 2019 were either domestic violence attacks or committed by men with histories of domestic violence, a 2020 Bloomberg analysis found. A peer-reviewed academic study released earlier this year had a similar finding: About 59% of the 110 mass shootings analyzed were related to domestic violence."
""Not all domestic abusers are this type of abuser, but in almost every mass shooting or mass killing, the person who committed it had a link to some sort of violence in their intimate partner relationships," said Carmen Pitre, president and chief executive of Sojourner Family Peace Center."
"Shawn Muhammad, associate director of The Asha Project, which serves African American women in Milwaukee, said he was "not shocked at all" to learn about the suspect's history of domestic violence. "When I see violent crimes one of the first things I look for is, I look to see if there is a history of domestic violence. Because there's always an intersectionality between domestic violence and homicides and other other crimes," he said. "So I'm not shocked, I'm not surprised at all.""
""Domestic violence is a predictable crime," Pitre said. "What was unpredictable about Sunday is that nobody knew he would be a mass killer in the way that he was. That’s the piece that is shocking and stunning.
"But he had shown in other instances that he was using violence," she said. "We know that violence will continue repeat in people’s lives until they get held accountable or there some sort of healing.""

R310 The issue isn’t “pandering to Blacks”. Blacks are a major voting block for the Dems and they SHOULD have their concerns listened too, at least more than they currently do. (more money for mental health / better training on how to de-escalate / whatever else it's supposed to mean on a given day)."
Great slogan. All it needs is several paragraphs of explanation on why it doesn't actually mean what it means. Can't see why it's not more popular among the electorate.

Nobody wants to see one tragedy after another distorted by politics. On the other hand the only event people can’t seem to politicize is a black man committing crimes against white people. If a white man had killed 6 blacks women and children flags would be lowered right now.

Wis. & Mi going red? Duhh Ya think? After Va. & that was minor stuff..This is major. Running down old women & children. Let's just step back for a moment & just look at the words describing this event in black & white...Old women there to entertain & lighten hearts & children to enjoy a parade.

Actually, R325, it is because the driver was under the influence. The idiot didn't intend to massacre people. Please tell me the difference between the two incidents is not lost on you.

R325 It's possible there is more to that story than just an evil driver. I live a couple hours from an Amish community, and know people who live around them. They've brought up how they travel on roads at night, without lights (for obvious Amish reasons), and cannot be seen at night. I've heard more than once people bitching about it, reasonably so, that those buggies cannot be seen until you are right up on them, and sometimes, yes, they are on highways, or roads where the speed limit is 45mph or more.

Wisconsin senator Tammy Baldwin not politicizing Ritterhouse
Sen. Tammy Baldwin @SenatorBaldwin
Let's be clear where the blames lies @repvos
. Two people are dead because Kyle Rittenhouse was allowed to walk the streets of Kenosha with an AR-15 and murder them. Stop giving this self-proclaimed, armed militia member a pass.

Is there one elected Democrat who still has some integrity when it came to these cases. Or do they all just keep repeating the same proven falsehoods over and over again.
by Anonymous | reply 331 | November 28, 2021 2:18 AM

Maybe elected officials don't want to comment for fear of a white supremacist leaning incel deciding to even up the score with their AR-15. I say it's 50-50 that there's retaliation for these Waukesha murders.

I would agree with you, but unless you were one of the few not agitating for a race war during Covington and Rittenhouse, then I'll assume you're being disingenuous.

I was not r334. I didn't follow the Rittenhouse case because it wasn't very clear-cut and I'll admit that I don't know anything about gun laws so I wouldn't have an opinion. I'll assume the jury got it right.

But black people vote overwhelmingly for Democrats so getting them turn out the vote is a high priority. White people are the majority, but they are older and less likely to change their vote. They are split pretty much evenly, with the ones voting Democrat pushing for a more radical agenda than black people, who tend to be more conservative leaning. Hispanics also tend to lean conservative, which is why identity politics plays such an important role. Culture issues are more effective in ginning up outrage and getting people to vote against their policy preferences.

When I went to Intercourse, Pennsylvania (Amish country), they (Amish people) told us that they weren't allowed to have electricity in their homes--but they all had a phone outside the house (in a kind of a booth) and electric farm equipment, etc. (They also give tours so that tourists like me can ask the same repetitive questions.)
The local gov't should really force them to have lights on their buggies at night--they way that police force bicyclists to.

This sort of attitude reminds me of how politicians in Europe from 2012-2015 (when there were a string of absolutely awful terrorist attacks) would downplay the loss of death because they feared a backlash against muslims. And look what happened. It created a far right backlash in Europe. Ignoring the problem makes it worse.

Not quite. You can't comment on Muslims or trannies either. Crimes statistics are now skewed because any man dressed as a woman in the committing of a crime is reported as a woman.

I think the opportunity for politicians to advocate against violence or publicly mourn these murders has passed. This is just going to be a festering wound from now on. It will certainly live on in the public imagination in flyover states.
Dropping the ball yet again, leaving it to other people (mostly pastors and conservative commentators) to address the problem.

I wish we had a political leader who would have the balls to say, ok, enough is enough with the racism on both sides. We can't change the past, but we can change the present and the future; the left condemning white people now for what some of our ancestors did long ago is just as dangerous as what those ancestors did.

The story is that a car killed 6 people. Once it was determined a black man was the driver, there was no more interest in the story. No NYT Op Ed pieces here. Hopefully (for the MSM) a white man will do something awful to somebody black soon and we’ll hear about it until our ears bleed. I can just see the serious faces on MSNBC lecturing us about white supremacy and violence.

I had a Sovereign Citizen client once. It made me finally do a deep dive into its origins and it's essentially these con men who everyone can see through except the idiots who claim sovereign citizen status.
One of the orgs in Philly has men who pretend they are lawyers but call themselves "Counsellors" and offer to represent you. Though, of course they can't legally.
After years of this nonsense one of our judges also researched the movement and wrote an extensive court ruling on it so that other judges had a template to quickly knock down these claims when it would appear in their courtroom.
