I know it is an artificial place propped up by oil. Outside of the obvious what is the quality of life.
Quality of life depends on whether you're a local Emirati who is subsidized by the kingdom to live in luxury and have no responsibilities or if you're a slave who is being forced to build and maintain the state.

Isn't Dubai an Islamic state? There was a news some time ago about a Scotsman that was jailed because he accidentally brushed against another man in public. I think the charge was indecency or obscenity or something of that sort. Call me paranoid but I just can't imagine being openly gay and staying in those sort of countries or states.

Other than sex, I am curious to hear from those who have lived there.

Yes, R2. You can be arrested for cursing in Dubai.
Gay sex is punishable by death.
I would never consider going there.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | November 21, 2021 11:33 AM |
Prostitution and slavery are rampant in Dubai. There are thousands and thousands of testimonies of black African workers who once arrived in Dubai had their passports taken away. They cannot leave the country and have to work in inhuman conditions. And there is this prostitution everywhere of girls from Eastern countries, Maghrebi women. There, during the day everyone works hard, but as soon as the work day is over, it is the prostitutes that you see absolutely everywhere.
The Qatari emirs are also completely into Muslim Brotherhood. So they advocate sharia and other abominable things. But for business they turn a blind eye when it comes to European tourists. But their dangerous influence in the rest of the world is still not fought by the UN.

Lots of shopping and things to do. Just stay in line and behave. You will see what you look for, as they say. They put a nice shiny bow on top of some old-school, misogynistic shit, that's for sure. However, If it's good money, you can do anything for a couple of years. It's quite an interesting place.
Every country is now crazy, this will just be a different flavor.

R5 Also from other surrounding countries such as Pakistan. Anywhere people are desperate, they are lured to Dubai and then their passports are taken away and they are forced into hard labor. And people come from all over the world, including the supposedly anti-slavery USA, to gawk at the attractions and ignore the slaves. No one cares. It has actually changed how I view fellow American people to see how they aspire to luxurious vacations in Dubai while saying slavery is a bane on US history. It makes me feel kind of sick.
The Emirates also have a history of buying kidnapped children from Mauritania (where many people are small) and forcing them to be camel jockeys, sometimes even tying them to camels' backs.

There are more and more testimonies on instagram from women who have accepted large sums of money in exchange for sex from super rich Qatari men. I'm not surprised about the women being recruited for sex, but I've always wondered about young men. Given the criminality of homosexuality, makes me wonder if the super rich Arab men that have a taste for young men are doing the same, but on the DL. I've noticed quite a few of the pretty boy "model" and "fitness influencers" and bodybuilders on Instagram always going over to Dubai and the Middle East for "modeling gigs" or jobs, etc...but never showing what they're actually doing. Gentlemen, I give you gay Dubai:
"All sexual relations outside of heterosexual marriage are criminalized. Punishments include death, life in prison, floggings, fines, deportation, chemical castration, forced psychological treatments, Honor killings, vigilante executions, beatings, forced anal examinations, forced hormone injections, and torture. Adultery and fornication are crimes punished with death, and a person convicted of homosexuality may also face charges of adultery if they have an opposite-sex spouse while having sexual relations with a person of the same sex. [bold]Homosexuality is illegal in the UAE, and is punishable by the death penalty under sharia law.[/bold]

Half of my cunty entitled greedy (white Brit) family emigrated there many years ago. They’re a perfect fit for the place—shallow, venal, and cluelessly privileged to the core.
To give just a couple of examples—they see nothing wrong with keeping Indians as unpaid domestic slave labour in the 21st Century, or contributing to the rotten and frightening armaments business in the middle-East.
One of my cousins even plays pro-rugby for the UAE now. Looks pretty odd having a milky-white blond English lad representing Dubai, but it’s not like any of the natives can or want to play the sport. Money talks, eh?

A relative lived in Qatar for a few years. Made a lot of money and lived on a compound with other ex-pats but if, as a Westerner, you were in a car accident it was automatically your fault. The citizens are hideous and entitled. Don't work and don't pay and they rape and beat their slaves and any hired staff are essentially slaves. His wife was constantly approached by men in stores asking "how much?" because, you know, all non-Qatari women are whores. As a westerner he could buy liquor but they all stayed on the compound and didn't venture out much.

R54 my white Brit dad worked a short stint in finance over in Qatar, Oman & Dubai. He was only living there for six months, but he found the experience upsetting, depressing and isolating. He brought back many disturbing anecdotes, the worst how the sewage systems there sometimes became backed up with the bodies of unwanted babies. He couldn’t stand passively watching how non-Arab or non-white peoples were treated there, worse than abused stray dogs. It seems like a fucked-up region.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | November 22, 2021 1:37 PM |

Anybody here who actually lives in Dubai and doesn't just have anecdotal knowledge? It's not even that I don't believe above stories; I do believe them. How free or restrained can you be in your daily life, sex life and other social contacts?

by Anonymous | reply 65 | November 22, 2021 3:44 PM |
Never lived there, but visited for a few months as a kid (in the 2000s). It was still under construction when I went, so it wasn’t as glossy and impressive and overwhelming as it probably is now. I just remember a ton of mini-malls and squalid temporary tower blocks surrounded by miles of sandy nothing. It wasn’t really an experience of classic Arabia and all it’s rich culture—more like a U.S. base. I wasn’t into it.
Also it was so fucking hot, and the Muezzin (call to prayer) every night absolutely fucked with my sleep (on top of jet lag).

People from Dubai always seem to be incredibly listless and uninspired by anything, unless they're Euro ex-pats, in which case they're shouty trash.
I remember being in London and seeing some Dubai bigwig leave the Ritz for his car - he was 350 lbs if he was an ounce and was wearing a lavender track suit. I had just been barred from entering because I was not wearing a tie, but Mr. Purple Easter Egg rolled out of there without any problem.

OP, forget 99% of the comments here.
Pros: Good money, high quality of life, hundreds of wonderful restaurants, amazing shopping, international stars regularly held their concerts there (Pre-Corona), Abu Dhabi Louvre museum is less than one-hour commute, traditional market is a very interesting excursion and takes you centuries back. Many things to do and enjoy like the highest infinity pool, no gravity experience and desert safari. Beaches are inviting only when weather is bearable. Gay life is active and you will meet many gays from all over the world either in clubs or in private parties.
Cons: Very hot 9 months of the year, ridiculous and strict rules and laws you have to abide to (someone was jailed for verbally attacking his employer online), no public affection and being low key is a must. The whole society is divided into natives who do nothing and enjoy everything (you wouldn't usually get in contact with them), and expatriates whom you meet every day everywhere. You will have your own circles of friends among them. Expatriates are also divided into sub-categories with Caucasians being on the top. They are respected for being the highest educated and the best experienced. Don’t talk politics, religion or sex publicly (it’s a common sense) and don’t try to break the law. If you don’t watch out your expenses, you will spend more than what you should save because all attractions are there.
If I remember something else, will add it.

R71 a pro you forgot to list is that if you’re there trolling the resorts, clubs and motels in September or January (i.e. off-season for sports) you might get a crack at some hot bi downlow pro-footballer (soccer) cock.
However, one must time this assay and choose a target very carefully, as said footballers are often homophobic and Kinsey 0s & 1s after prime yachtgirl fanny only. So do your research, hit the gym 6 months early and scrub up very well m if you’re going this route.
If you do choose this course, next winter will be primetime, as we will have an extra long two-month window due to the immense, corrupt and prestigious FIFA World Cup held in Qatar for the very first time.

Don't be such a party pooper, R72. Haven't you heard what R71 said? They have a branch of the Louvre, shopping malls, desert safaries, restaurantsm beaches and underground gay clubs, not to mention that you don't pay taxes! It is paradise!
Why should anyone be concerned about what happens to the brown-skinned help? It's not like they are on top of the expatriate pecking order like Caucasians, is it? They probably deserve it when the slightly-less-brown ragheads decide to murder them over a few spects of dust on the floor.

I haven't intended by any means to undermine the negative sides of living in Dubai, particularly their record of human rights or the cast-system-like society. I've spect a lot of time in Dubai and as someone who enjoys being outdoors, I realized no one ventures outside due to the heat. You move from one air conditioned space to another. My work associates play golf at 3am since it's cooler then. Everything in Dubai is based in and around giant shopping malls, all chrome and glass and water fountains everywhere. (I guess the look and sound of water is to make you forget you're in the middle of the desert.)
Dubai is relatively new - there are no grand old buildings, no tree lined boulevards, nothing historical. Everywhere is modern 8 lane highways lined with less-than-stelar architecture. The locals in managerial positions are mostly from wealthy families and everyone else is an expat with a 5 to 10 year plan - make some money and have some fun in Dubai, then go back home. No one moves to Dubai with the idea they will stay there. Given all this, I think it would be the polar opposite of Germany.

R97 I can tell you that Oman is literally just endless arid rocky screes, populated by nomads foraging for frankincense to trade, and emanciated goats grazing the scrub. There were quite a few bleached animal skulls all over the place when I was driven through. I can’t remember seeing constructed settlements, only seas of tents. A spooky, empty, near-lifeless place.

before signing for a job in Dubai, i decided to visit and stayed there for 2 weeks... i will never ever go back. all the reasons are laid down pretty exhaustively in the previous 100 posts. one point that i would like to highlight : ALL the emirates are pretty much the same as Saudi Arabia. don't be fooled by the massive marketing campaigns that are funded by the government, including on facebook, youtube, everywhere on google, TV channels, etc... it's all fake.

Oman is a country, not an Emirate. I used to live there, was there when the sodomizing sultan died. Most of its 5 million people are in Muscat. Lots of open desert, mountains and coastal areas that haven't been chewed up by development, but Omanis are fucking horrible people.

They treat expats like shit, are endlessly arrogant, childish, two-faced, shallow. It's all too rare to come across citizens that are half-way competent and productive. And they're vile wrt animals; people complain about barking, wild dogs and the police shoot the dogs.

My cousin and her husband have lived there for over 20 years. They are both in the PR business. They raised both of their children there, with the help of nannies and housemaids from places like the Phillipines, help that they paid, not slaves. They arrange and publicize for companies that attend the numerous international fairs and exhibitions held there. They make incredible amounts of money, and have no illusions that here is any sort of morality or reasonableness to the life of the emirates or in fact to their own lives there By the pictures my cousin has shown me, they have a very nice home. although given the climate, the landscaping is minimal. They off-shore as much of the money they earn as they can safely do, investing in real estate and rental properties in Paris, London, and the US, because they fully expect that someday they will be exiled or there will be a coup, and their house and belongings will be confiscated. My cousin bought a large house in Charlottesville (7 bedrooms and baths) and for the last several years has spent the majority of the summer there, since the summer in Dubai is unbearable and not much business happens at that time of year. They have invited me to visit any time, but as a gay man, I wouldn't feel safe and have never taken them up on it. Their two children are now in the US in school and I would expect their parents to leave Dubai sometime in the next 10 years. My cousin's husband is probably a bit on the greedy side. He gave up his American citizenship because he was so angry about the taxes that ex-pats are required to pay. What he didn't realize is that giving up his citizenship essentially barred him from travel to and from the US. I think he had to buy citizenship in the Bahamas or Barbados or some such place in order to return to the US to visit his dying father. last year.

My brother lived there for two years with a global oil company.
I was extremely distressed at the caliber of expat friends he made and dated. It almost caused our family to break apart when he wanted to bring an absolute piece of trash woman from someplace back to America. I gave him an ultimatum regarding my help with him getting into an Ivy League business school if he did so, and he dropped her. But he’s still friends with the sons of English barrow boys he met. Horrible.

Honestly, in darker moments I find myself envious of the moral bankruptcy or neutrality of those who can stand to live in places like that and make mega-wedge. Their material quality of life and their security is so much better. Why do we all scrabble desperately around in the dirt when people like this are so corrupt that they cancel out any of our decent actions?

According to the Royal Foibles blog, the male and female whores (oh sorry, "influencers") go there flown in by among others, Prince Hamdan, who is a hardcore drug addict that enjoys frequent orgies. Apparently, his older brother Rashid, who on top of a drug-addicted bisexual slut, was a thief and a murderer, was removed from the line of succession because he was batshit crazy. Thus, I guess that the fact that he died of a drug overdose isn't exactly a tragedy, since he was truly dangerous and a nasty piece of work.
Anyway, here's what the article says:
Wikileaks exposed documents written by American diplomats stating that the heir to Dubai’s throne was an out of control drug addict that’s been in and out of rehab for years, and that he’s a bisexual party boy that enjoys flying in male and female escorts to his father’s desert kingdom for weekend orgies...
Well, now you have a confirmation of sorts; the Insta-hoes who go to Dubai are hoping to get an invitation to a sheikh's orgies, so they can make bank... If they manage to survive.

Well, all of them appear to be rather nasty R115. In the comments section in the article I've posted @R110, the say that Hamdan is quite nasty whenever he doesn't get what he wants.
Speaking of insane behaviour, look at what Sheikh Falah (younger brother of the current Sheikh at the United Arab Emirates), did to an Italian-American businessman in 2003. Unsurprisingly, the legal system has done everything in its power to exonerate that psychopath.
When Orsi politely rebuffed a bottle of champagne the Sheik ordered sent to his table, explaining that he didn’t drink alcohol, Falah opted for a more direct approach to the gentleman he was clearly hoping to seduce... Sheikh Falah next approached Mr. Orsi, sat on his chair’s armrest, told him that he enjoyed being dominated by larger men, and then began kissing, licking, and fondling him. He also playfully called Silvano “a stupid American” for having refused him. Orsi, who was engaged in a conversation at that time with a Saudi Arabian business partner, immediately informed His Highness that, as a heterosexual, he had no desire to engage in a public display of affection with him, or any man for that matter. It was then that the Prince’s flirting transformed into blind rage.
He next jumped on Mr. Orsi’s lap, grabbed him, threw him to the ground, took his glasses and stomped them underfoot, unfastened his belt, and proceeded to beat, whip, kick, and spit at him. Calling him “a dumb American,” “a dumb Italian”, and repeating that no such person had the right to order him around, Orsi later testified that while the Prince was engaged in his tirade, no one came to his victim’s assistance. Sheik Falah’s entourage eventually wrestled him away from his victim, but joined in the hurling of insults at him while doing so. Silvano next proceeded to the front desk where he asked for the police to be called. It was at this point that he learned of the royal status of his assailant, and it was also at that moment that Falah launched a second attack on Orsi before the combined efforts of hotel security and his entourage put a stop to it.

I know of some people who take jobs in places like the UAE, Oman etc planning to only do a few years, make a lot of money (no taxation) and then leave, so if that's your goal, then I guess? But you couldn't convince me for anything to give up a life in Germany for one in the UAE, personally.

OP wants permission to go make a lot of money in an anti-gay (probably to the point of murder) misogynist (probably to the point of murder) hyper-capitalist cesspool, and many are chiming in to supply whataboutist cop-outs.
I can't put myself in the headspace of someone who wants an excuse to go participate in such anti-humane, end-times-level, glossy wish fulfillment (if your wish is for lucre). Why want that? How gross and warped to want an excuse to go live in such a scene. What more do you need to find the place gross enough? Do you need throats cut in front of you for something to seem not worth the amazing PAYCHECK?

I read Oman is pretty liberal
by Anonymous | reply 124 | April 4, 2022 8:38 PM |
Oman and the UAE are equally liberal. The problem with Oman is that unlike the UAE, you'll probably be working with citizens. The UAE has so much money for so few citizens that the overwhelming majority have government jobs.
And with ultra-rare exception, people from Oman are fundamentally horrible. I've worked in several countries and Omanis set real standards for laziness, greed, two-faced dishonesty. At all levels of employment, they treat immigrants like shit. It's part of the culture. People grow up with maids, cooks, gardeners. It's easy to see where it comes from, but the people are pathetic.
I worked with adults who lived at home, would bring lunch made by the maid, summon the office "tea boy" to get it from the fridge, put it on a plate, heat it and deliver it to them.
The terrain and coast are nice, but citizens of Oman are to be avoided.

I have a family member who has lived there for over ten years (he's a lawyer for a multinational). He loves it. Anyone who thinks it's overly restrictive, has never lived there. I wouldn't want to live there, but if my choice was between there or most of the southern US, I'd live there. Still, I'd rather live among Levant Arabs than Gulf state ones.
