Between this and the Billy Eichner movie, Hollywood loves casting hunky Luke MacFarlane against these guys than in reality wouldn't date in real life.
Every gay knows you don't see guys who look like him chasing after guys who look like Michael Urie.

You realists are all right. This movie should be 2 hours of Michael Urie drinking alone on Christmas Eve drunk texting former tricks. That’s the realism a gay Christmas movie demands. With a trip to a bathhouse.
Netflix is coming for your crown Hallmark. You're in danger gurrll
Uh...not really.
The now-classic Hallmark brand Christmas movies may not be great, but they have the perfect formula that audiences go for. Mostly they are romantic comedies "Capital ROM-lower case-com", meaning extra romance and just a touch of funny. There really isn't a need for gays or lesbians in a real Hallmark movie, even we gays get a fucking break from ourselves for a couple hours! We goof on these films but the Lifetime, ION, and Netflix copycats just don't achieve that schmaltzy, mug-cradling [italic]je ne sais quoi[/italic], do they?
As I posted before, I had a nice big role in one a few seasons ago (the lead actress' dad) and I look at our script all the time and see exactly how the pieces came together. It wasn't great but still rather perfect in its own Hallmark-fantasy way. It really was an education!
On our last day of shooting the big family scenes our leads planned and paid for an on-set Christmas cookies and hot cocoa party for the cast and crew. It actually brought a tear to my eye, I had grown so fond of everyone in those three sweltering weeks!

by Anonymous | reply 26 | November 14, 2021 6:21 AM |
Groff and Levy are both ugly as shit, as ugly as Urie in fact. They’re also way too expensive for this shit, especially Levy. McFarland works all the time but his quote is low. I wonder if he’d crack 3 digits on an IQ test.

Will they ever adapt Jim Grimsley's wonderful gay romance novel Comfort & Joy? It was beautifully written with tragedy, drama, passion and bittersweetness to it. It was set during Christmastime and about a gay couple who were coming out to both sides of their family. Grimsley is like a gay Faulkner. There's a lot of gay literature I would like to see adapted properly. Maybe a remake of Object Of My Affection too. Gay relationships have more complexity to them. Not all the same as hetero relationships that have established gender roles and ingrained cultural norms in courtship.

Netflix Gay Christmas Movie
Those words should excite me, yet they fill me with dread.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | December 2, 2021 2:08 PM |
Christmas romcoms aren't mean to be art, you know exactly what to expect. But if they have no chemistry that is a big problem for a rom com.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | December 2, 2021 2:19 PM |
Gay rom coms are just harder to write convincingly. A lot of the hetero drama and misunderstandings that are the staple of the genre don't translate well onto gay male characters. I'm happy for the normalization of gay relationships though, so can't complain that much.

The one that Lifetime did last year with the confusingly-cast Fran Drescher (she was awesome, but also really, really Jewish) was terrific. Same off the shelf plot as every other one of them, but the chemistry between Blake Lee and Ben Lewis (who are married in real life) really sold it.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | December 2, 2021 2:27 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 63 | December 2, 2021 4:39 PM |
Ok, so is this deliberately written as a gay version of a Hallmark movie?
If so, then it kind of works because it's cheesy, endearing and boring in equal parts and ultimately a waste of time.
If not, then what a waste of a cast that deserves so much better.
And the Love Hard Meatloaf scene was approximately 86% better than the Britney scene in this.

Back in high school, when my brother outed me after finding my porn stash and informed my parents and siblings that i liked black men (late 70s) they started a particularly nasty campaign of punishing, threatening and bullying me to get me to change. Now in this movie, members' of the white character's avg American family are trying to push him to become romantically involved with his black best friend. America in 2021.

This is what he told the Hollywood Reporter-
For Chambers, who is Black and identifies as queer, the opportunity represents more than just a career leveling-up — it’s a game-changer.
“When I was growing up, I didn’t really know [I was gay,]” he says. “You kind of suppress it. And I did that for years. I tried to act very masculine.”
That secrecy extended into adulthood and his professional life, too.
“Back in the day,” he says, “and I’m new to the industry, but Michael remembered it too, you couldn’t really say who you were openly without judgment. And within the past five years, it’s becoming a thing [to be openly gay]. With Marvel having their first black gay character in Eternals, I mean, that speaks volumes from where we were. And I really cannot wait to see what happens in the next five years, when it will be normalized versus this thing that has to be a thing.”

I do agree that there is a noticeable age difference between Michael Urie and Philemon's character. But I guess that is fine.
What is annoying me more in ages is Kathy Najimy does not look like like she could be the mother of Jennifer Robertson.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | December 4, 2021 12:45 AM |
Is he any relation to Luke MacFarlane r84?
Also the most unrealistic part of the movie was him asking Michael Urie up to his place and getting rejected. Girl, every guy would give it a ride and worry about the rest afterwards.

How much bare flesh does Luke show in this "film" is the million dollar question... If it's anything less than 75% of his body surface area, the this film is a hard pass.

Also……..Steve Lund playing yet another bisexual, which is fine by me.

by Anonymous | reply 98 | December 4, 2021 2:16 AM |
I semi-watched the whole rotten piece of shit, while I was doing other things. In the last half hour, some of the performances loosened up a bit. In the last hour, Jennifer Coolidge provides enough weirdness to distract some attention to how bad it all is. But even she is phoning it in. Kathy Najimy's character seems to be conceived as a stepford grandma and her performance is a travesty. It was nice to see Barry Bostwick looking well as an old man and his character and performance is likable.
by Anonymous | reply 99 | December 4, 2021 2:22 AM |
What was annoying is his nieces and sisters trying to make him NOT be wtih Luke Macfarlane!!! Like anyone gay or straight would not want to be with him. His character was so hot, great body, masculine, and a nice guy
by Anonymous | reply 100 | December 4, 2021 2:42 AM |
The NYT and Chicago Tribune reviews above were both written by women. The Guardian at least had a gay man review it. He was unimpressed.
by Anonymous | reply 101 | December 4, 2021 2:45 AM |
I think one of the interesting things they left fully unexplored is that Michael Urie's character is UNLIKEABLE. And Michael played him as such. Who would want to be with this guy? Yet everyone ignores this. Only his mom says once or twice - why do you run away from love? The character has ZERO game. He's snarky and dismissive. So it's an accurate gay character WE ALL KNOW but it's not set into a network of friends and family and lovers and possible lovers who acknowledge who this character is.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | December 4, 2021 2:53 AM |
Michael Urie is not even on the other guys level. Not to mention Michael is old enough to be his dad. This is what Netflix thought was good casting? Also why are hot black guys doing the ugly unkempt beards? Black Bachelor was doing one of those too...Gross.
by Anonymous | reply 103 | December 4, 2021 4:25 AM |
Watched 30 minutes and got irritated by the lack of spark between the leads - the black actor was clearly cast for diversity, not chemistry.
Netflix recommended me Colton Underwood: Coming Out which is a lot more interesting, although the man is a dolt who thought he could come out to his pastor and receive love and sympathy. Instead, he gets told he's a sinner and he starts crying.
by Anonymous | reply 105 | December 4, 2021 9:39 AM |
Yeah, the audience is given no reason why either guy wants to be with Michael Urie other than he is the main character of the movie r102. He isn't a great looking guy and he wasn't written to be funny/charming to where he has all these hunks fighting over him.
by Anonymous | reply 106 | December 4, 2021 2:34 PM |
I never thought a movie could have too much Jennifer Coolidge, but this movie has too much Jennifer Coolidge. And her role is just a parade of set pieces that say “Look, Gays! Here’s everybody’s favorite fag hag fag-hagging it up for your pleasure! Like our movie!”
by Anonymous | reply 107 | December 4, 2021 2:56 PM |
Watched it late last night as I did a crossword puzzle and quite enjoyed it, despite the obvious cheesiness.
At first I mistook Barry Bostwick for James Brolin! I loved Kathy Najimy in this! Was impressed that she avoided too much mugging and thought she was very believably cast as Michael Urie's mother even if the rest of the family looked like wandered in from some other Christmas movie. She really has remarkably kept all that excess weight off all these years and whatever plastic surgery she's had dome her face is very subtle and realistic.
Shocking that hack director Michael Mayer couldn't get Luke's shirt off, considering the character worked at a gym. In that silly scene at the bar when he gets food splashed all over his tight tee shirt I thought: Aha! Here it comes! But then the shirt stayed on - very disappointing.
It seemed to me like they never expected to land Jennifer Coolidge for the wacky aunt so her casting just didn't work very well with what she was asked to do.
I'd definitely recommend giving the film a look, especially if you've got a crossword puzzle or some knitting ort something to also focus on.

I looked this up after seeing Max Emerson post about it on Instagram and the reviews are fair; it's not very good, but Christmas schlock usually isn't. I felt bad for Max after watching it because he made such a big deal about it being the first time he was able to travel in a year, and then he had to quarantine in a hotel in Montreal for 2 weeks(!), to have about 15 seconds of screen time and no real dialogue... only to play a sad version of himself in a scene that was set in Los Angeles. I mean, they could have shot that scene and those setting up Urie's character and backstory in LA, saving a ton of money but for Covid. Casting a fully-clothed Luke Macfarland was a waste. I also can't imagine having to work with Kyle Krieger, but that's just me.
by Anonymous | reply 111 | December 4, 2021 7:08 PM |

I think Luke MacFarlane is adorable and a good actor. I loved him on Brothers and Sisters and I don't understand why he doesn't have a higher-profile career. But aesthetically, I think he's so cute and I wish he were still built like he was on Brothers and Sisters instead of a big ol' bodybuilder as he is now.

R120 That's her one trick! From The White Lotus to Legally Blonde to Friends, she always does the funny faces and the screwy pronunciations and the funny/unnerving over-the-top tonal shifts. It always works for me. I always get annoyed that she is always a side character and not a starring lead, but she'd be too much to take doing that as a lead.
by Anonymous | reply 123 | December 5, 2021 1:05 PM |
R123 can you believe she was Jerry's girlfriend rhe Masseuse ("I don't submit to forcible massage!") on Seinfeld?
by Anonymous | reply 124 | December 5, 2021 1:07 PM |
Yes - she can be funny, but think Cooliidge's bit would be too much for a lead role. She was perfect Chris Guest ensembles like in Best in Show where she would be on for a few minutes and then they would go to other characters.
Sometimes I find myself watching repeats of Two Broke Girls in a can't look away from an accident sort of way. It is a bad show, but cannot decide whether the cast is bad or actually have good comedic timing and know how to play the bad material. Maybe the later, since I do find myself not turning the channel. As much as I like Coolidge, I usually do not find her that funny in this, maybe because she is paired with what could be the one character I think is straight out bad with no redeeming comedic timing with bad material.

They should have just made the cast black. Jake from State Farm instead of Michael Urie, Drake instead of Luke MacFarlane, Jill-Marie Payton as somebody's mama, and Jenifer Lewis somewhere up in there.

I felt "some kinda way" about the premise of the gay-friends-must-be-lovers-with-intervening-straight-matchmakers at first but then I remembered that for a decade gay male characters would be the ones relegated to being sexless matchmakers for straight best friends who are unwittingly in love and decided it's OK. I enjoyed the movie. It's a Hallmark/Lifetime confection.

It took me about 3 days to get through this entire movie. At first I thought the lack of romantic chemistry was down to them both seeming like best friend bottoms. But no.....nothing else connected except for their portrayal of a good friendship; and I actually liked their friendship. Yet the build up was everyone trying to convince the viewer that these two were obviously in love with each other. For whatever it's worth, it's no worse than any other Hallmark 'rinse & repeat' Christmas movie that literally plays all year long. Kudos to whoever decided to try something a tiny bit more diverse than the usual suspects. Perhaps that was down to Netflix. For some reason the do-rag was the funniest parts the movie for me.

It tried way too hard. 60% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. It was what it was and I reluctantly appreciated that.
At least it was Gay-affirming and gave Jennifer Coolidge, who was still belching from all that scenery, a chance to wink at her gays with her little sofa monologue.
The script however was DREADFUL.

R138 Script, acting, direction - all dreadful.
by Anonymous | reply 139 | December 5, 2021 3:48 PM |
This movie really wasn’t gay (or “gay-affirming”) at all. Its central premise was extolling the wisdom of suburban white women. First Kathy Najimy orchestrates a blind date with her son and a local stud, but then it is the sisters and their Gen Z daughters who discover the unacknowledged mutual attraction between Michael Urie and Mr Taskrabbit (seriously, what were the terms of that product placement agreement? That the cast had to say “taskrabbit” at least 15 times? It was like a 30 Rock joke) and proceed to facilitate a love connection. The ostensible main characters, the three gay men, are completely passive and oblivious. The ultimate message is Los Angeles/big cities= bad, quaint small town America = good. Never mind that not one character looked or sounded like they’d ever spent more than a weekend in New England. It was as if a production assistant found a dumpster full of those idiotic inspirational signs (the ones Najimy’s character made and put all over the house) and then constructed a movie around them.
by Anonymous | reply 140 | December 5, 2021 3:59 PM |
r140, I don't disagree at all, except that I meant gay-affirming in that the family was both comfortable with gayness and wanted their son/brother/uncle to be happy. But yes, it had a very "my gays" vibe that really annoys me.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | December 5, 2021 4:02 PM |
The only thing that really annoyed me about the movie was that the protagonist's life revolved around shirtless Instahos. I'm glad, though, that the story has him caring more about his (modelesque) boyfriend-to-be and moving back to be close to his family. Call me heteronormative, but that's where I am in life. I have zero-zero-zero interest in the gym bunny gay culture that is the only gay culture where I live. I feel like I am the only gay man on Instagram who doesn't post photos of myself showing off my body. No, I don't have the body for it, but I also don't care to have the body for it. With every passing year, I find that kind of self-objectification sadder and sadder no matter how much casual sex those guys have.

Love the cast of Single All The Way. Especially Jennifer Robertson as the kooky sister.
At first, I thought it was weird that the audience can't see any of the kisses of Urie with the other guys, but at the end it made sense that the kissing at the end made a much bigger impact that way.

This was dire. As theGuardian review says, Urie seems to be in a different movie from everyone else. It also makes zero sense everyone loves him (family and bfriends) while we are given zero evidence of any kind of charm. The luke character seems idiotic, keeps being turned down and showing up again and again. Coolidge is funny but not in here, where she had nothing to do. Couldn’t they got a better script at least?

by Anonymous | reply 173 | December 9, 2021 1:09 AM |
That's not a gay specific thing r173, it's how all these holiday rom com works.
Usually it is some woman who has been "too busy for love" who visits back home and finds the dick she needs to make her life complete.
No one is allowed to be content being single in the world of romcoms, the genre is built around relationships being the end all be all.

My biggest problem was that you could tell 10 minutes in that they were setting up the two best friends to be together in the end, but first, they had no sexual chemistry, and second, if they were friends all this time and were interested in each other, wouldn't they have slept together by now. I could see one of them pining for the other, but there was nothing.
if they were friends all this time and were interested in each other, wouldn't they have slept together by now. I could see one of them pining for the other, but there was nothing.
Exactly. Fraus might behave like this but it doesn’t work on gays. We know if we want to sleep with you or not the second we meet you. We don’t change our minds 10 years into the friendship. It’s very set in stone.
by Anonymous | reply 177 | December 9, 2021 6:19 AM |
R106 Thats how romantic comedies usually are. The formula is to usually have a plain Jane / basic looking white woman who’s bitchy or has no personality but all the guys want her like she’s the last piece of meat on Earth.
by Anonymous | reply 178 | December 9, 2021 6:34 AM |
Single All The Way was the most patronizing movie I've ever seen.
So silly. It's a Hallmark holiday movie about gay people, that's all. Same formula, just applied to a gay couple.
If I had a complaint about the theme, it would be that a lot of straight people do assume two gay friends must be romantically involved and the basis of this story is that the gay guys were blind to their love while all the straight people saw it.
But I don't do thematic analyses of Hallmark or Lifetime movies, so why do one of this movie just because it involves gay men? That would be like a food critic writing a takedown of Hershey kisses. What's the point?
by Anonymous | reply 179 | December 9, 2021 11:32 AM |
if they were friends all this time and were interested in each other, wouldn't they have slept together by now.
Whenever that is the premise, there's always the "I don't want to lose this great friendship, we currently have, if it doesn't work out!" hurdle to overcome. And in this case, it was Urie's character who had that concern.
It all comes down to a leap of faith. Trust in the happy ending fantasy. That's what these romcoms are all about.

I watched this last night and it was okay. I just took it for what it is, which is Netflix's version of a Hallmark Christmas movie (except with gay characters, of course).
I agree that the age difference was a bit of an issue -- not that a younger guy wouldn't ever go for an older man, just that when Michael and Philemon finally have their big kiss at the end and camera is in close, you can more easily detect the near 15-year difference in their ages. I think Philemon is adorable and did fine in the role; however, I do wonder if an older, Shemar Moore type would've been a better choice for the roommate role.

I don’t understand this movie at all! There’s the hot sexy doctor and a hot sexy ski instructor and he ends up with the bland no personality failed writer? Why even introduce the doctor and his smarmy condescending to the help wife if he wasn’t going to come back into the story?
And what was up with The Best/Worst Christmas Pageant Ever rip off, it seemed to be included just to give Jennifer Coolidge something to do.
Why did the snowplow driver get two songs to sing?
Some of this would have made better sense if it was Connecticut, I can see someone from LA moving to Connecticut, but never New Hampshire.
What was the shaving cream campaign all about, especially with the Black guy who had a beard and didn’t shave it?
Does the Luke McFarland guy move to LA and try to get into social media, but because he was way to old to try to do that.
Just ridiculous shit this was, why did I spend all that time watching it. That lesbian one last year was ten times better.

It was cute if you accept it for what it is: a low brown, mindless, feel-good Christmas movie that was clearly written for the frau market that enjoys these types of films. I say representation at all costs, so I'm cool with this film though I don't expect I'll watch it again.
R210 It's interesting because Michael is an older looking 44 while Philemon is a young looking 27 so in the scenes when these two are close together (particularly in the end) the age difference is noticeable though personally I didn't find it uncomfortable (a younger and older man together is not that uncommon in the gay community). The problem is though, I think Philemon's and Michael's characters are meant to be in their 30s and neither one looks it. Also they were, supposedly living together for about 9 years before this movie which doesn't seem plausible given how young that would've made Philemon's character (though Michael's character says something about Philemon's character having been on his own since he was 17 which could imply he actually was that young when they met which is creepy lol).

by Anonymous | reply 222 | December 14, 2021 8:27 PM |
I don't know, I thought it was cute. No chemistry between the leads, but I wasn't watching this and expecting art. My fiance and a straight friend and I watched it together after dinner last week. I am gonna be 50 next year, so maybe I have a different take on things. In a lot of ways, pop culture has accelerated so rapidly in my lifetime, it surprises me. This sort of sappy rom-com would never have been dared to have been made when I first came out in the early 90s. Because my family STILL isn't supportive and won't meet my partner even though they know we are getting married next year, well----seeing an affirming family was great to see on tv. I am excited for today's youth to be more accepted by their families and stupid rom-coms like this do help normalize gay people in general. A straight person watching this not friends with gay people might understand a little better that gays are not scary or different.

I agree r223. My partner and I got together in 1980. My mother refused to meet him. By the time she came around he no longer had any desire to meet her. Now he is dead and she is lost in the fog of dementia.
by Anonymous | reply 224 | December 14, 2021 10:18 PM |
R223 Yeah this was movies was never going to be an artful, critically acclaimed movie. If you go into this with the knowledge that this a mindless "Hallmark like" Christmas rom-com, actually enjoyable but I agree the two lead actors had zero chemistry, though I think that might be down to the fact they don't actually have that much alone time in the movie to actually make their romantic tension seem real. This movie is targeted towards fraus and I think that's a good thing. The more positive representation the better. And lets be real, in our more "woke" culture, gay men are actually appearing less prominently than we were even five years ago.

Revoltingly stereotyped "men", Urie is way too old, the sisters are awful, and Jennifer is wasted. Got through an hour before retching.

Netflix is supposed to have money but it still looked like a shitty TV movie.
by Anonymous | reply 228 | December 15, 2021 3:30 PM |
Most movies made by Netflix look decidely non-cinematic.
by Anonymous | reply 229 | December 15, 2021 3:35 PM |
Netflix has a two-tier approach to movies. They have a limited number of bigger budget films they release each year, and then a larger number of "second rate" films (usually based on scripts that were passed over by the studios) that they can fill in the rest of their release schedule with. This cheaper films are often filmed with TV production crews on more of TV schedule. Urie said in an interview they film Single All the Way in 4 weeks in Montreal.

Michael doesn't have chemistry with his own boyfriend. They're like dickless Ken dolls.

That long?
by Anonymous | reply 232 | December 15, 2021 5:59 PM |
R232 The average for a lower budget movie is 8 to 12 weeks. 4 weeks is the equivalent of about two episodes of a one hour tv show.

It's like those two teenage girls actually wanted to see Urie and Chambers fuck and suck right by the Christmas tree. That's how "into" being Cupid they were.

Those 2 meddling scheming bitches clearly watched too many boylove anime.
Why was the handsome married cardiologist boyfriend agreed to follow him home when he clearly cant?
And nobody want to talk about the handsome bear hunk brother-in-law? With a neurotic and mentally ill wife he likely a regular on the town gloryholes. .

R235 Jennifer Robertson played the neurotic sister. She was great on Schitt's creek but her acting was terrible in this movie.
by Anonymous | reply 236 | December 16, 2021 6:24 AM |
She played pretty much the same character in both, r236. But she was good at it.
by Anonymous | reply 237 | December 16, 2021 7:35 AM |
R236 Agreed. I loved her in Schitt's Creek, but she really screwed this one up.

The more I think of this days later it was dreck, pure dreck, and I’m very angry the mom didn’t get her white tree with gold ornaments. That was rude and unkind of him to come in and take over, and as a so-called plant person, a ridiculous conceit if there ever was one, you’d think he be pro artificial tree and not cutting a real one down.

The only guy (or character for that matter) that I liked was the personal trainer.
Next year, make a sequel starring him. And pair him up with an equally hot guy.
I'd watch that.
(And no dizzy broads. Talk about some holiday cock blocking.)

HUH? That's not true at all! Eight to twelve weeks? No way, that would require a much larger budget.
Having been in a number of horror, low-budget and Hallmark films I can tell you that three weeks to eighteen shooting days is a reasonably accurate average for a lower budget film. A Hallmark, Lifetime, or Passionflix film is shot in three weeks, period. On tv an hour-long episode of a network show is shot in eight days, so basically the same schedule or number of pages filmed each day, about 7 and a half.
by Anonymous | reply 244 | December 16, 2021 10:56 PM |
HBO typically made its movies in about 5-6 weeks 15 years ago. And it felt rushed.

I thought it was cute for what it was. It's totally marketed toward the "Hallmark" audience though, and I agree the two leads had zero chemistry.

It was nice because it was not acted like a Hallmark Card reading.

They did a live interview with Philemon on the local news this morning here in NYC. He really seems like a total sweetheart and down-to-earth guy. If nothing else, I hope this movie leads to better things for him.

A Christmas Proposal (TV Movie 2021),
starring Jessica Camacho (All Rise) and Adam Rodriguez (CSI:Miami).

I was hoping it would end with a very hard Luke blowing a load through a wreath. The script was predictable, but I didn’t hate it. God knows I’ve seen enough of that lesbian Peppermint Patti over the holiday seasons.

This what happen to tv gay characters reduced into caricatures for mug-cradling frau consumption. The gays will retain their dated stereotypes ( not too much to be offensive ) but with a sexuality of a Ken doll. And don't forget the supportive yet clueless PFLAG-type mom.

Watched this last night. Surprised and delighted to find Steve Lund was in it, devastated to find he was in it for 2 minutes. The film was meh and Michael Urie is not a romantic lead. Better suited to bitter, washed up, waspish queeny uncle who spits at babies.
Did I mention Steve Lund?

When did everyone start clutching their pearls over age differences in relationships? You're both of the age of consent, you get to make your own sexual choices. If you don't like it, don't do it yourself. It always comes across like a kind of fear some people have that they could be traded in for a younger model by their partner, so they try and insinuate that the idea of even being in a May-December relationship is "problematic" as a way of forestalling this.
