Why Hasn't Michael Urie Had A Better Career?

Thread about Mario Cantone had one thinking about Michael Urie. He was wonderful in "Ugly Betty", "The Goodwife", and "Modern Family", but really doesn't seem to get much film or theatre work.

What gives?

Didn't he do "Torch Song Trilogy" a couple of years ago?

by Anonymousreply 5October 31, 2021 8:43 AM

He and Vanessa Williams had excellent chemistry on Ugly Betty. Didn't he stay in the closet for several years after that show ended, even though his homosexuality is visible from outer space?

by Anonymousreply 6October 31, 2021 8:56 AM

Did he? I remember he was interviewed on Regis & Kelly but with Anderson Cooper subbing for the former, and Michael called Anderson "Mr Sassypants."

by Anonymousreply 7October 31, 2021 8:58 AM

Is this the same guy as that traveling optometrist Andrew Neighbors?

by Anonymousreply 8October 31, 2021 9:03 AM

I've always thought he's adorable. I liked him in "Buyer and Cellar", which he streamed on Broadway.com last year. And he was excellent in "Ugly Betty", R6. I wasn't aware he'd been in "Modern Family", because after seeing a few clips, I couldn't bring myself to watch it...the handheld camera use is annoying, even if it does serve the story.

And according to internet searches on my part, he's only 5'11". I myself am 5'4", but I always imagined him to be at least 6'2" or so. Who knew. Anyway, I like the guy.

by Anonymousreply 9October 31, 2021 9:09 AM

Michael Urie's character on Ugly Betty was great when he tried to stop Justin's family from giving the kid a "gay coming out party". I've never laughed so much.....

When he was invited to the Golden Globes on the Ugly Betty table his plus one was a then-unsuccessful Jessica Chastain. Has she returned the favour? Hell no.

by Anonymousreply 11October 31, 2021 9:35 AM

R5 Are you just reading Urie's quote regarding Coolidge that appears as the caption to the photo link at R4? .. Reading the entire article, my takeaway is that what Urie is talking about is a subplot within the movie that involves Coolidge's "Aunt Sandy" character, who he says is writing/directing/starring in the town's local Christmas Pageant.

by Anonymousreply 12October 31, 2021 9:44 AM

There just are not that many roles for queenie gay guys. He has been on more than one successful show, in Hollywood that isn’t too bad at all.

He’s currently in a wonderful film called Swan Song. Easy to fine on demand.

R14 Thanks for posting that! I don't recall that show at all but I liked those clips very much! I wish it were streaming somewhere.

The reality is there just aren’t that many gay roles, particularly comedic roles

by Anonymousreply 18October 31, 2021 1:02 PM

I never paid much attention to him before, until I saw some recent pictures. I think he is adorable.

by Anonymousreply 19October 31, 2021 1:05 PM

OP needs to look things up - he’s in another broadway show as I type. He’s doing fine.

by Anonymousreply 20October 31, 2021 1:12 PM

He seems like he's producing a few shows - like DL fav Sutton Foster's show younger (on which he did a small role).

by Anonymousreply 21October 31, 2021 1:16 PM

He works all the time. My rich brother is friends with Urie. He's invested in real estate and the market and has many millions. He has a surprisingly large cock and men throw themselves at him. He's very funny and not sour and gets invited everywhere.

by Anonymousreply 22October 31, 2021 1:54 PM

I was underwhelmed by him in Torch Song.

But right before COVID lockdown, I saw him on Broadway in Grand Horizons and thought he was [italic]really[/italic] good.

And he's really cute.

by Anonymousreply 23October 31, 2021 2:14 PM

He miscast in Torch Song. But I can't blame him for not turning down a gig.

by Anonymousreply 24October 31, 2021 2:15 PM

*He was miscast

by Anonymousreply 25October 31, 2021 2:16 PM

I worked with him in a film once and he’s a VERY nice guy. Friendly and talked to everybody. Loved him on Ugly Betty.

by Anonymousreply 26October 31, 2021 2:22 PM

He got his big break because Vanessa Williams took an interest in him, even down to telling him to stick by her so that he'd appear in camera shots for the Ugly Betty pilot where he had no dialogue. I would guess that he understands that anyone you work with could help you or can you if they become powerful.

The entire production was a disaster. The play is dated, all over the place, and without the author as Arnold is simply not worth producing.

Urie gave the first truly lousy performance of his career, he was absolutely awful. It was embarrassing.

by Anonymousreply 39November 1, 2021 9:02 PM
Because he's an out, gay actor and will not get cast to play romantic leads.

He wouldn't be even if he were straight--he's a comic actor with an unusual face. He's attractive, but he's not a leading man type (unlike, say, Matt Bomer or Cheyenne Jackson, who are held back from having conventional leading man roles because of their sexuality, not their looks).

by Anonymousreply 40November 1, 2021 9:13 PM

I've seen Michael Urie in dramatic roles onstage and he handled them just fine. Prior to the shutdown he acted in a revival of Tony Kushner's "A Bright Room Called Day" downtown at the Public Theater and did a lovely job.

I’ve seen him in a number of stage performance and appreciated his performance, but he has hard time projecting beyond being Michael Urie. That’s why Buyer and Cellar probably worked best with his abilities is it didn’t skew far from who is already, it just that he is always present as Michael and never completely disappears into a role. He would have been great at a time when there were variety shows like the Carol Burnett Show.

Michael is amazing and I loved him (and would liked to've seen more of him in the 'Swan Song' movie.

He's also incredibly homosexual; why anyone would say otherwise is baffling. I actually saw him in an Off-Broadway play several years back. My friend and I had front row seats. We're both gay, and the crotch of Michael's very tight pants burst during the performance when he did a hunkering dance move. We restrained ourselves (unlike the crotch of his pants), and he realized himself that he needed to excuse himself nonchalantly. He did just that, and came back in as if nothing had happened. My friend--a Broadway superfan--was trying to explain to me what had happened after the performance. I silenced him and said, "I know what happened...I saw Michael Urie's scrotum."

by Anonymousreply 54November 3, 2021 4:46 PM

I've only seem him in a few Ugly Betty scenes & the

"Cleveland Indians" episode in Hot In Cleveland where he stole the show.

I need to catch him with his career sometime down the line.

by Anonymousreply 55November 3, 2021 5:10 PM

r54 many would say the same ('incredibly homosexual') about Alan cumming - but they arent actually. Both talk about their sexual attraction to women and have been in long term relationships with them. Both live 'gay' lives, but they arent actually gay.

by Anonymousreply 59November 3, 2021 11:21 PM
Both live 'gay' lives, but they aren't actually gay.

Wait, what? How does that work?

by Anonymousreply 60November 4, 2021 2:11 AM

Michael Urie and Alan Cumming insisting they are bisexual is to me very much like Caitlyn Jenner and Veronica Ivy insisting they are women or Rachel Dolezal insisting she is African American.

by Anonymousreply 61November 4, 2021 2:20 AM

I don't follow it anymore but I used to regularly visit Alan Cumming's Instagram page several years ago and it was always pics of him with his handsome young assistant at the time, pics of him on the dance floor in some gay nightclub surrounded by a group of cute twinks, pics of him with his husband (are they still together?), etc. So yeah, I never buy the "I'm bisexual" thing with him but to each his own.

by Anonymousreply 67November 4, 2021 8:24 AM

r67 Whats with the fucking eyeroll? Most bisexuals live essentially gay or straight lives, depending on their preference. Both Michael and Alan are perfect examples of that. They date/ have long term relationships with men, engage in gay social events, mix in gay circles, have 'gay' mannerisms and pop culture references. But both are not 'gay'. Only a few years ago Alan was at the helm of the bisexual pride in Tel Aviv.

by Anonymousreply 68November 4, 2021 8:41 AM

Please, these two fags are not bi. Neither are Duncan Lance Black and Tom Daley. And definitely not Bryan Singer!

by Anonymousreply 69November 4, 2021 8:55 AM

Well unlike DLB, Tom Daley and pedo adjacent, both Alan and Michael had long term relationships with women AFTER having dated men.

by Anonymousreply 70November 4, 2021 9:23 AM

Wasn't Alan engaged to Saffron Burrows after his marriage to a woman? Bisexuality isn't about meeting a quota.

by Anonymousreply 71November 4, 2021 9:27 AM

Michael explicitly says that while people might assume he is gay, and he knows some gay men date women before coming out, he is in fact not gay;

“I’ve been in a relationship for a while now, and if you just met the two of us together we’d be ‘gay,’ ” he explains. “But that somehow means anything that happened before [we met] didn’t count—and I don’t feel that way. I know that some people feel that way. They were with women, but it always felt wrong. But it didn’t for me. It felt right at the time. It didn’t work out, but it also didn’t work out with other men—many times. That’s why ‘gay’ never seemed right.”

by Anonymousreply 72November 4, 2021 9:32 AM

He has a great career. He starred as Hamlet at the Shakespeare Theatre while simultaneously directing another play just before the pandemic and he got rave reviews for his Hamlet. He works constantly, just not on TV. I did feel 'some kind of way' about seeing that he hosted an HGTV design show, which seems a little beneath him if he's going to do television. I have had a big crush on him for a long time. I really don't care if he is gay or bi or something else.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 73November 4, 2021 9:55 AM

I dont particularly care (although I will fully admit to not being a massive fan of bisexuals generally, but within this case specifically I dont care). by Anonymousreply 82November 4, 2021 11:40 AM

Rewatching Ugly Betty and urie does stand out. The first half of the first season was so good. And the dropoff was equally noticeable. The old school TV seasons of 20 plus episodes were unsustainable in terms of quality.

The interminable Henry storyline was a drag. I remember the show rebounding to higher standards for its 4th and final season. I'm glad it went out on a high note. I'm slogging through the 2nd season and not overly excited about the 3rd. Hopefully it will be worth it once I reach the the 4th.

by Anonymousreply 83November 4, 2021 12:33 PM

Except if you're a theater actor living in LA or California for that matter doesn't do much good, now does it?

For a few decades now a fuck ton of films and television is done in NYC so there's that as well. Oh and fact that a NYC based actor primarily working in city isn't going to be asked out of blue to be interviewed for a CA news/entertainment segment .

Ugly Betty for instance was bi-coastal, but majority of episodes were filmed in NYC.
He needs a jo video to “accidentally” leak.

🤢Ain’t no one want to see that! 🤮

Sexual leaks seem to boost most actors carreers…especially if they’re packing.

by Anonymousreply 133November 14, 2021 12:34 AM

Packing what?

Ii went to see Brandon Urie when he replaced Billy Porter in Kinky Boots on Broadway and was so disappointed when I realized I had been expecting Michael. But Brandon turned out to be pretty damn good.

by Anonymousreply 135November 14, 2021 2:08 AM

Wait, he played a black part??

by Anonymousreply 136November 14, 2021 2:15 AM

Brandon Urie is bisexual too.

by Anonymousreply 137November 14, 2021 2:18 AM

r135 r137 BRENDON, not Brandon.

How is Michael Urie's singing voice? Maybe he could have done the Sean Hayes role in "Promises, Promises"

Brendon Urie played Charlie Price, not Lola, the Billy Porter role.

What is H2$?

by Anonymousreply 142November 14, 2021 6:29 AM

The trailer for Single All the Way looks cute.

The queens flailing about Urie’s bisexuality are ridiculous. He fucks women much more frequently than men but who cares? He and Spahn have been roommates and nothing more for well over a decade. Urie has a kid in jersey somewhere with some frau.

by Anonymousreply 147November 15, 2021 7:39 AM

Was he supposed to be something other than a gay character actor ?

Oh please. This queen is not fucking women.

by Anonymousreply 149November 15, 2021 10:10 AM

I've never heard of him.

by Anonymousreply 150November 15, 2021 10:24 AM

Michael Urie has a kid?

by Anonymousreply 151November 15, 2021 12:11 PM

When was the last time Michael Urie dated a woman? He's been with his boyfriend for years. Or is this just some fantasy that he somehow fucks women on the side?

by Anonymousreply 152November 15, 2021 2:57 PM

No, this thread has gone off the rails because people don't know how to reference previous posts.

Clearly a fantasy, although who would have such a fantasy about Michael Urie, I can't imagine.

Michael Urie and partner make news yet again...
