I thought that he was quite flamboyant as Peter Allen. Watch the scenes where he’s rehearsing for his Radio City Music Hall debut.

He really looks nothing like Allen, especially in the later part of the film.

His character on Modern Miss Fisher is very subdued.

I think he was well cast as Allen. He has the kind of looks that can read as homely or handsome depending on the styling. He's balding, like Allen was. And his large nose keeps him from being pretty.
