The Gays and Tennis Part 102: second half of the fall season

last thread paywalled

we're now into the SF round of Cluj-Napoca, Courmayeur, St. Petersburg and Vienna. Paris Masters and Billie Jean King Cup )formerly Fed Cup) starting next week.

I have to say I'm enjoying having the fall indoor season again.

by Anonymousreply 292November 13, 2021 3:34 PM

schedule for today:

Cluj-Napoca:

Kontaveit vs. Peterson Kontaveit must win the title to get the last spot at the YEC

Halep vs. Kostyuk

Courmayeur:

Tauson vs. Samsonova

Paolini vs. Vekic

St. Petersburg:

Fritz vs. Struff

Cilic vs. van de Zandschulp

Vienna:

Zverev vs. Alcaraz

Sinner vs. Tiafoe

by Anonymousreply 1October 30, 2021 6:44 AM

It's understable that Kostyuk felt that way about the US Open final, she was better than Raducanu and Fernández and she seemed destined to big things before stalling

by Anonymousreply 2October 30, 2021 9:56 AM

[quote]Paris Masters starting next week.

Shapovalov has withdrawn (he seems to skip French tournaments?) and Murray received another wild card

[quote]St. Petersburg: Van de Zandschulp upsets Rublev 6-3 6-4

I can't stand Tiafoe's on-court attitude. The crowd seems to eat it up, but he is just over-the-top and annoying as hell.

by Anonymousreply 4October 30, 2021 3:23 PM

He’s another one who thinks he is there to entertain the crowd rather than win matches.

by Anonymousreply 5October 30, 2021 3:29 PM

So pleased Tiafoe won...just to piss off you miserable bitches.

by Anonymousreply 6October 30, 2021 4:05 PM

I can't believe how well Tiafoe is playing. I like the rapport he has with the crowd, and he does know that he is there to win.

by Anonymousreply 7October 30, 2021 4:09 PM

I'd much rather watch an in-form Tiafoe than dial-tone Sinner.

by Anonymousreply 8October 30, 2021 4:13 PM

Tiafoe played lights out in the last set and a half. Major props for not giving up when he was down 2-5 in the second. That was a great win.

by Anonymousreply 9October 30, 2021 4:42 PM

Donna Vecic looks like she put on 20 Covid pounds.

by Anonymousreply 10October 30, 2021 5:04 PM

I LOVED Tiafoe’s comeback! It was amazing to watch.

Results today:

Cluj-Napoca:

Halep def. Kostyuk 6-0 6-1

Kontaveitt def. Peterson 6-3 6-2

Courmayeur:

Vekic def. Paolini 6-2 6-0

Tauson def. Samsonova 4-6 7-6(8) 6-4

St. Petersburg:

Cilic def. van de Zandschulp 6-3 6-3

Fritz def. Struff 5-7 6-1 6-3

Vienna:

Tiafoe upsets Sinner 3-6 7-5 6-2

Zverev def. Alcaraz 6-3 6-3

by Anonymousreply 13October 30, 2021 6:24 PM

It seems Sinner didn't like Tiafoe's attitude, it's really rare on him talking about other player but he thought it was simply too much.

My problem with Tiafoe is that tomorrow he'll be trashed mercessly by Zverev.

by Anonymousreply 14October 30, 2021 6:28 PM

R14 I'm not saying Zverev won't trash Tiafoe, but that's what the commentary before every single one of Taifoe's matches has been this week.

by Anonymousreply 15October 30, 2021 6:38 PM

I'm a fan of Tiafoe. When he's playing well he can battle with the very best as he has speed, power and variety of shot. His 2 big downfalls are sometimes he chokes leads and the other is sometimes he gets so caught up in playing to the crowd he distracts himself and loses momentum. This week he's had ups and downs but managed to pull it together by the end of the match. He won't be able to have periods of inconsistency tomorrow unless Zverev has serving woes. Zverev has been pretty solid in that department this week

by Anonymousreply 16October 30, 2021 7:12 PM

R14, Sinner could stand to take a page out of Tiafoe's book with a little more exuberance and expression. It's nice to see when Sinner smiles, but most of the time he seems robotic on court and his scowling-grimace fist pumps are unsightly.

by Anonymousreply 17October 30, 2021 7:35 PM

R17 That stands to reason. I'm pretty sure his long time coach mentioned in an interview that he used Ivan Lendl as an example early on about on-court demeanor.

by Anonymousreply 18October 30, 2021 8:05 PM

That's unfortunate, R18. Nobody liked Lendl.

by Anonymousreply 19October 30, 2021 8:14 PM

R17 Between Sinner's coldness and Tiafoe's over the top antics there's a whole world

R19 That's true nobody liked Lendl even if he was way more likeable than a bufoon like Connors

by Anonymousreply 20October 30, 2021 8:15 PM

I’m disappointed A. Zverev defeated the pockmarked Alcaraz.

by Anonymousreply 21October 30, 2021 8:38 PM

I like Bercy

by Anonymousreply 22October 30, 2021 9:32 PM

Bercy team.

by Anonymousreply 23October 30, 2021 9:41 PM

do not like tiafoe's game or personality, but that ass of his is off the charts! oh lordy to see that naked in the locker room, strutting around, wet from a shower! ...what a gravity defying bubble butt on him! whew!

by Anonymousreply 24October 30, 2021 9:45 PM

Domicakes team

by Anonymousreply 25October 30, 2021 9:46 PM

I’m not a fan of Sinner and he’s not really Italian he’s Austrian

by Anonymousreply 30October 30, 2021 10:41 PM

R20, that's an awfully low bar. Very few players were less likeable than Connors.

by Anonymousreply 31October 30, 2021 10:45 PM

R31 Yeah, right? I did the world a favor.

by Anonymousreply 32October 30, 2021 10:48 PM

Tiafoe’s trolling the crowd for applause (in between lumbering/shuffling around the court after every point) is nauseating.

by Anonymousreply 33October 30, 2021 11:29 PM

When does the Incredible Hulk girl play?

by Anonymousreply 34October 30, 2021 11:32 PM

R34 The round robin WTA finals event in Guadalajara, Mexico. November 10-17th.

Sabalenka, Krejcikova, Pliskova, Sakkari, Swiatek, Muguruza and Badosa are going while the final spot will be either Kontaveit or Jabeur.

by Anonymousreply 35October 30, 2021 11:39 PM

R35 Compelling lineup!

Daddy Fritz Team

by Anonymousreply 39October 31, 2021 10:33 AM

I love Tiafoe's game (well, outside of that weirdly huge round swing on the forehand) but I do find his weird crippled strut a bit over the top. He walks around like he has spina bifida from the previous point. These 'Hulk Hogan' type celebrations seem to be more of an American thing (I recall Coco Vandeweghe doing it a lot, and perhaps even Roddick), i'm not a massive fan either but they do get the crowd involved like its another sport, and I do prefer it to robotic sulky Sinner.

I never thought Cluj Napoca would be my most anticipated final of the week, but there's actually something at stake with Halep trying to extend her streak of winning a title every year (and the home pressure), and Kontaveit's YEC spot hinging on whether she wins or not.

by Anonymousreply 40October 31, 2021 11:02 AM

R31 That's true but the crowd loved him, so it's not that surprising that crowds love someone like Kyrgios

by Anonymousreply 41October 31, 2021 3:02 PM

I like Tiafie he is quickly becoming a crowd fave

by Anonymousreply 42October 31, 2021 3:25 PM

Last days for the public to vote for the Hall of Fame selections this year. I chose Flavia Pennetta and Juan Carlos Ferrero.

by Anonymousreply 43October 31, 2021 4:18 PM

Poor Daddy Fritz!

I want to comb his hair.

by Anonymousreply 44October 31, 2021 9:31 PM

Final results:

Cluj-Napoca: Kontaveit def. Halep 6-2 6-3 for her 4th title of the year, 5th singles title overall and gets the last qualifying spot for the YEC knocking out Jabeur

Courmayeur:

Vekic def. Tauson 7-6(3) 6-2 for her 3rd singles title

St. Petersburg:

Cilic def. Fritz 7-6(3) 4-6 6-4 for his 2nd title of the year and 20th singles title overall

Vienna:

Zverev def. Tiafoe 7-5 6-4 for his 5th title of the year and 18th singles title overall

So who tops and who bottoms?

by Anonymousreply 77November 1, 2021 10:29 PM

I think Laslo starts out topping, partly due to Serbian macho pride , but as Lorenzo learns the ropes and gets more confident they'll soon start flipping. At least this is how it all goes down in my fantasy.

This story is wild. Former doubles #1 and multiple slam winner (and grand slam semi finalist in singles) Peng Shuai has been sleeping with a very high ranking 70 year old [married] Chinese Communist Party official, at first it was an assault but it became something of a relationship or arrangement.

She exposed it in an emotional post on her Weibo (and there are photos on TennisForum of her wearing a 'Z' necklace in her matches for him). She is probably in a tonne of danger for blowing the whistle, I hope she is out of the country or else she may 'disappear' suddenly. It probably helps that the NYT has picked it up.

Many of the other Chinese players have not played a tournament this year outside of the Chinese National Games and Olympics (forced to stay within the country and train under their programs). Only about 4 players have begun to play tournaments now (Zhang Shuai actually played in the grass season while all the others were not allowed out at that point).

unfortunately Brooksby has an ab injury and has withdrawn from the #NextGen final. It's a real shame because the lineup is very good and I wanted to see all the best young players face off. Sinner, FAA, Alcaraz, Korda, Musetti, Nakashima are all qualified

by Anonymousreply 125November 4, 2021 8:49 AM

by Anonymousreply 126November 4, 2021 12:00 PM

Norrie team or Fritz team?

by Anonymousreply 127November 4, 2021 1:38 PM

Norrie team.

I find it weird Barty isn't playing the WTA finals despite qualifying in first place. It's a ton of prize money on offer; the most after the slams.

by Anonymousreply 128November 4, 2021 3:01 PM

R128, Tennis Channel said something about returning to Australia and having to quarantine. I was half paying attention.

by Anonymousreply 129November 4, 2021 3:09 PM

R129 She is vaccinated so I don't think quarantine is an issue. She said that she was exhausted and wasn't going to play any more tennis for a while. I suppose maybe it's for the best since in 2014 she took a hiatus from tennis, played cricket.. before returning to tennis in 2016, so she appears to somewhat easily get burnt out. Still given that there was $14m prize money for 8 players last year, it's no wonder that players like Jabeur and Kontaveit are so keen to get into the WTA finals.

by Anonymousreply 130November 4, 2021 3:26 PM

Sinner & FAA won't play the NextGen Finals either. It looks like Cerundolo, Baez, Rune and maybe Gaston will be there instead

Are we really calling Fritz 'daddy'? I know he has an actual kid, but he looks like a teenager - with greasy hair and sunken eyes (as if from playing video games all day). The kind that has Cheeto dust all over his fingers. Some of y'all need to raise your standards.

Is Seb Korda really a great person? He had a whole bunch of stuff in support of Trump on his twitter before his publicist got him to remove it. You can still see screenshots out there. I like his game, just not the headband lol. And it was a bit gross seeing how obsessed with him Tennis Channel got before he had any results at all to speak of, and really played up the father-son family dynamic angle. With nobody mentioning that his father took full on steroids throughout his career and quietly retired with a grand slam as soon as he was banned.

The Florida IMG tennis machine is working hard for him though, and I think he will be top 10 at some point. I also find it a bit odd that the father is parading all 3 children out there as successful athletes and using their success to get back in the limelight (he even caddied for one of his golfer daughters and was there for every photo op hahaha, a bit much).

Weird that Australia is in the SF without Barty and several other players.

R156 is right. I saw the screens on twitter. He had old likes on Trump's tweets and his PR machine told him to play the good democrat so on October 2020 he started to like some random Biden tweets and unliked Trump's but people screenshotted everything. LOL

I really despise the guy. No balls to stand up for his own ideas (good or evil) and it shows he's willing to sell his ideas to get more money and be more likable. A mental prostitue, basically. I don't know why people are so obsessed with him. He's already 21 and won... one 250 event? LMAO

I find the anti-vaxxer thing so weird still. You just know that these athletes regularly pump themselves with a bunch of drugs and pills, legal or not. How many childhood vaccines have they already had? Yet a covid vaccine is beyond them. So strange - it's been made so political when it's really a preventative health thing. Sigh.

by Anonymousreply 217November 9, 2021 5:37 PM

Another early loss for Raducanu to someone ranked 106. I'm thinking more and more that it's looking like she's another fluke slam winner.

by Anonymousreply 218November 9, 2021 6:45 PM

It's too soon. She is going to need a lot of time to adjust of what happened to her.

She was pretty far from top 100 when she won, there's a lot of experience needed to rise up on the ranking that she skipped.

But she needs a good coach as soon as possible or this could end badly

by Anonymousreply 219November 9, 2021 7:05 PM

by Anonymousreply 229November 10, 2021 2:03 PM

Shee-vi-tek

by Anonymousreply 230November 10, 2021 2:09 PM

Why is Swiatek wearing her dad's shoes? The doubles group photo looked much better. Hsieh Su-Wei surprisingly fabulous with a sexy black gown and dark lipstick. Lesbian Demi Schuurs in a tuxedo. Sam Prehistosur dressed better than when she was in the singles group photos all those years back.

Raducanu will need to do a lot of work since she basically took the elevator to winning a slam, and missed a lot of 'stairs' along the way. This is what the WTA tour is like though, losing to players outside the top 100 in small events when you are the favourite (lol). She's still only 18, but as much as she could be a great player, I also could envision her being another Iva Majoli, who never lived up to her early, unexepcted slam win as a teenager and got caught up in the jet-setting lifestyle, despite a few years in the top 10.

by Anonymousreply 231November 10, 2021 2:16 PM

With Sinner's loss to Murray in Stockholm, FAA is assured a place in the year-end top 10 unless by some fluke one of the Milan final 8 is injured, Sinner steps in as the alternate and beats enough players to overtake Felix.

by Anonymousreply 232November 10, 2021 6:46 PM

Sinner really imploded in the last weeks. That defeat against Tiafoe did a lot of damage.

To be fair he was not lucky with the draws, Alcaraz and Murray are not a walk in the park.

Felix needs to win the title to seal the reach of the top 10 with style

Going 0-3 in round robin play at WTA Finals earns you 375 points, i.e. more than winning a WTA 250 title (280) or reaching a WTA 500 final (305) and close to reaching a Grand Slam quarterfinal (430).

(Going 0-3 in RR play at ATP Finals earns you... 0 points. As it should.

by Anonymousreply 237November 11, 2021 2:54 AM

YEC day 1:

Pliskova def. Muguruza 4-6 6-2 7-6(6) both had chances to win and the tiebreak was a mess. Muguruza really struggles against Pliskova

Kontaveit def. Krejcikova 6-3 6-4

by Anonymousreply 238November 11, 2021 3:43 AM

Well that was a real dogfight in Guadalajara tonight between Pliskbot and Mugu. Really fun match. Love a tight 3rd set TB. Mugu was her customary icicle at the handshake LOL I don’t think I’ve ever seen her be gracious or kind to ANYONE at the net when she loses.

by Anonymousreply 239November 11, 2021 6:41 AM

R239 I actually thought that was one of her warmer handshakes LOL. The way she spent about 15 seconds looking at the umpire and deciding whether or not to shake hands was really funny. Such a muggy tiebreak, but an entertaining match as it got so close at the end. Probably best chance she'll ever get to beat Pliskova, I think her H2H is 2-9 now. The Mexican crowd were really rooting for her (she is Venezuelan by birth/heritage) so I hope she wins at least one RR match this week. Plus her game is a bit more exciting than Pliskova's etc.

Watching the Next Gen finals, I love how much these young guys use the whole court. Alcaraz, Musetti, Brooksby... one shot they are metres behind the baseline and the next ball is a touch volley. It reminds me of those great indoor matches between Sampras and Becker where they threw in short angles, net approaches, varying spins, slices, everything. I hope their generation steers us away from the boring baseliners and power grinding that permeates the modern slow-hard-court ATP.

by Anonymousreply 240November 11, 2021 1:21 PM

Iga's shoes lol - my gaydar goes 'hmm' since lesbians love their sensible shoes. I vote for Muguruza as best dressed.

by Anonymousreply 241November 11, 2021 2:36 PM

Alcaraz is pretty amazing to watch.

by Anonymousreply 242November 11, 2021 3:07 PM

Musetti got rid of his awful man bun (i think that hairstyle is responsible of his bad results, the same for Davidovich Fokina).

If this was a normal tournament the only one with options to defeat Alcaraz could be Korda, but with this rules a surprise is easier

by Anonymousreply 243November 11, 2021 5:38 PM

I can’t wait for Mugu and DL icon Fernandez to square off.

by Anonymousreply 244November 11, 2021 6:10 PM

Kontaveit has the most momentum going into the finals. Imagine if she would win as a last minute number 8?

Dimitry Tursunov for coach of the year! And hottest male tennis player of all time.

by Anonymousreply 245November 11, 2021 6:23 PM

Baez is going to complicate Korda's life.

Korda was on semis with all combinations is Baez didn't win in three sets, but if Baez wins in three sets, Musetti is in semifinals if he wins in three or four.

Anyway, i think Korda is going to defeat Musetti

I hope Big Sexy Berrettini doesn't go 0-3 lol

LoL! :)

I think it is hilarious that the commentators always refer to Tommy Paul as "Tommy Paul" every single time. They never refer to him as just "Tommy" or "Paul" like they do with any other player throughout the match. Paul Annacone is the worst about doing it.

by Anonymousreply 259November 12, 2021 2:17 AM

Is Tommy Paul related to Ru?

by Anonymousreply 260November 12, 2021 3:04 AM

Every time I see Badosa I think of Sharapova.

by Anonymousreply 261November 12, 2021 4:21 AM

I think PBG is better looking than Sharapova.

by Anonymousreply 262November 12, 2021 4:39 AM

How's that r261? Badosa isn't a tall, gangly, insufferable wench.

Rublev looks cute in that picture. Ruud is unremarkably basic.

by Anonymousreply 265November 12, 2021 3:01 PM

Djokovic looks small compared to the rest of them.

by Anonymousreply 266November 12, 2021 3:44 PM

Our Hubie is such cutie

by Anonymousreply 267November 12, 2021 5:10 PM

Berretini looks the hottest in the picture! Woof woof.

by Anonymousreply 268November 12, 2021 6:25 PM

What is happening with the ladies, Swiatek was crying on her match and Sabalenka cried at the press conference. They are overly sensitive in this tournament

by Anonymousreply 269November 12, 2021 6:30 PM

fucking hate that awful scruff facial hair that Berrettini and some other players go with. They look much better either clean shaven or neat facial hair

by Anonymousreply 270November 12, 2021 6:49 PM

another brain fart from Tiafoe. He was playing great, got too caught up in the moment again and blew it while serving for a straight set victory. Except for the forehand he's better than Paul but Paul was more disciplined

by Anonymousreply 271November 12, 2021 6:50 PM

Tommy Paul just needs to get a haircut, shave and take off his shirt.

by Anonymousreply 272November 12, 2021 7:01 PM

R272 agreed. One of the few men who looks worse with a beard (for me)

by Anonymousreply 273November 12, 2021 7:33 PM

Does our Mugu swim in the lady pond?

by Anonymousreply 274November 12, 2021 7:35 PM

R274 yeah, I know from a good source that Mugu was dating her physio some time ago

by Anonymousreply 275November 12, 2021 8:11 PM

Hubie is reddit.com/r/aww worthy, such a sweetheart. I'll be crushed if it's discovered he is an asshole.

by Anonymousreply 276November 12, 2021 8:22 PM

I think Ruud looks cute! Of course, I always think Ruud looks cute.

by Anonymousreply 277November 12, 2021 9:18 PM

Ruud team

by Anonymousreply 278November 12, 2021 9:25 PM

Tommy Paul is dumb as a bag of hair

by Anonymousreply 279November 12, 2021 9:29 PM

They're all doing the blue steel look in that pic

by Anonymousreply 280November 12, 2021 9:29 PM

Yep, it'll be a Dumbro vs Dumbo final in Stockholm, R280.

by Anonymousreply 281November 12, 2021 10:00 PM

er, R279, that is.

by Anonymousreply 282November 12, 2021 10:00 PM

At least he's smoking hot. I don't judge the dumb in a package like that.

by Anonymousreply 283November 12, 2021 10:02 PM

YEC day 3 results:

Muguruza def. Krejcikova 2-6 6-3 6-4 revenge for the USO match. Cold handshake. Muguruza was quite happy after match point lol

Kontaveit krushes Pliskova 6-4 6-0 first win over her

Kontaveit qualifies for the SF. The second spot is up for grabs.

Knoxville challenger:

QF:

Altmaier def. Sock 3-6 7-5 7-6(2)

This was a golden opportunity for FAA to win his first ATP title.

Sinner was out and Dennis is out of form.

And yet he still flopped.

He really need to fire both of his coaches.

Toni Nadal is one of them.

by Anonymousreply 289November 13, 2021 3:10 AM

I think the problem with a lot of the younger top players of the last 16 years is that they get 1 great result, either a big title or a QF/SF/F and suddenly they get tons of endorsements and the star treatment at future tournaments. For some of them, this seems to cause them to take their foot off the gas and not be as hungry for more success. It used to be so hard to get a lot of money as a tennis player unless you were winning more than 1 big tournament each year. The prize money and endorsements have really grown since the late 90s

I do think Felix will eventually win a title in 2022 but yes he really blew a great chance this week.

by Anonymousreply 290November 13, 2021 3:24 AM

I'm starting to find Zverev's trashiness hot. He's so sleazy seeming.
