R1 A year ago he was interviewed and they asked for a girlfriend and he skipped the question, of course that's not unusual (Carlos Gimeno Valero did exactly the same) and Musetti talked about not wanting a girlfriend only to cry over a break up a few months later.
I have the feeling Alcaraz is very mature in some things (his behaviour on court is way better than most next gens) but a child for others. He seems very focused on tennis

Tennis Channel misspells tennis as “tennnis” in a segment about which player should play James Bond. After mentioning an old-time woman player, Pam Shriver said her ex-husband, George Lazenby, who played Bond once, can play him a second time. Roddick said Berrettini looks like he would look good in a tuxedo but that Federer would have the box office appeal.

by Anonymous | reply 45 | November 16, 2021 6:54 AM |
I think so, R45, but she hasn't been seen in public since November 2nd as well as all her social media scrubbed, and if anyone tries to talk about her (even if unrelated to the allegations) on Chinese media it automatically gets censored. So it's disturbing all the same. They might not have killed her but they've certainly 'disappeared' her.
At least both the WTA and ATP have spoken up that it's not acceptable.

Cry me a river, Jannik @ R48. Matteo actually qualified for the tournament. I'm pretty sure he can take all the time he wants to make the decision, particularly as it's in front of his home crowd. You are the equivalent of a 'Lucky Loser' - with the emphasis on lucky to get to play at the event.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | November 16, 2021 4:10 PM |
Sinner only needs one victory to end the year in the top 10. I hope he does, he won more points this year than Felix, and Felix is only top 10 due to the trashy ranking (with points of 2019 and 2020)

Kontaveit was really a middling player until getting with Tursunov. I had seen her play plenty of times before and never thought she was all that great. Suddenly she's been in the form of her life.

I think Monica could train for a few months, make a comeback and dominate tennis in the current random WTA. Her grunt alone would strike fear in everyone's hearts and her double fisted groundstrokes would still be a killer. She deserves justice for what WTA and Graff did to her in 1993. Steve Simon may have good intentions but he is a smart man.
Peng Shui is not a hill he (and WTA) is going to die on.
ATP chief has also given a smart token statement. But neither organization is going to pull out of China. And they shouldn't
These two men know agenda driven Western journalists very well.
These media people are pushing for merging of ATP and WTA. In pretense of avoiding dependancy on China.. They are already shaming ATP for showing resistance for the merge.
Same media people who are now goading for the boycott of China will call these two organizations 'racist' in a year or two for the boycott.
Also CCP is not Arizona GOP which would fold fo after a slightest threat of boycott..
They don't care if there is not a single tournament of WTA or ATP happens there

The WTA will want to cash in on Emma's Chinese heritage to secure more events and prize money in PR China. They are not going to give up on that revenue potential over some D-list player who will be forgotten in about four weeks when the SJWs move on to their next topic and their next hashtag.

R120, I guess it was rude to call Shuai Peng a D-list player. I meant that in the sense that if a Serena or Osaka just went missing they are superstars who would stay on the radar until they were heard from. Poor Shuai isn't in that league and I feel sorry that she will get forgotten when all the tweeters find something else to tweet about and feel virtuous about.

China tennis player Peng Shuai will reappear in public ‘soon’ after social media post claiming she was coerced into sex
BEIJING – Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai has been staying in her own home “freely” and will make a public appearance “soon”, Global Times editor-in-chief Hu Xijin, a prominent state-media journalist, said on Saturday.
Former doubles world number one Peng has not been seen or heard from publicly since she said on Chinese social media on Nov. 2 that former vice-premier Zhang Gaoli coerced her into sex and they later had an on-off consensual relationship.
Neither Zhang nor the Chinese government has commented on her allegation. Peng’s social media post was quickly deleted and the topic has been blocked from discussion on China’s heavily censored internet.
“In the past few days, she stayed in her own home freely and she didn’t want to be disturbed. She will show up in public and participate in some activities soon,” Hu wrote on Twitter.
The Global Times is published by the People’s Daily, the official newspaper of China’s ruling Communist Party.
Hu said he had confirmed through his sources that photos shared on Twitter by a journalist working for Chinese state media, purportedly showing Peng at home, depicted her “current state.”
Reuters was not able to verify the authenticity of the pictures independently.
Amid growing concern about her whereabouts, the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) has threatened to pull tournaments out of China and the men’s ATP has demanded clarity from the Chinese authorities.

Mugu vibes as straight (and bitchy) to me. The WTA does have plenty of lesbians and bis though - Stosur, Minnen, Kasatkina, van Uytvanck (sp), Schuurs, etc. It seems more acceptable for the women to be out, maybe partly because Martina Navratilova and Billie Jean have been out for decades. The ATP is another thing though...

MISSING tennis star Peng Shuai has been reportedly filmed having dinner with her friends after she was reported missing amid sexual assault allegations.
It comes after Chinese state media said the 35-year-old, who hasn't been seen since November 3, "will show up in public soon."
The tennis star has reportedly vanished after accusing a former top Chinese government official of sexual abuse.
Photos of the former Wimbledon doubles champion have been posted on social media showing her holding a glass of wine and making a victory sign. –– ADVERTISEMENT ––
The footage, posted on Twitter by the editor-in-chief for the official newspaper of China's ruling Communist Party, the Global Times, Hu Xijin, shows her having dinner with her friends and coach in Beijing.
He had previously said that new photos on social media showing Peng surrounded by cuddly toys are real despite her followers fearing their legitimacy.
In the clip, Peng can be seen sitting with a man and two women but she doesn't speak.
Meanwhile during the conversation, there are repeated mentions to the date, with the man asking "Tomorrow is the 20th of November right?" while a woman responds "No, it's November 21st."
He continues by discussing Peng's performance and the upcoming tournaments.
He adds: "We had two matches in the past. But we were not happy with the results.
"The match tomorrow is the conclusion of the nine matches in the past three months.
"The end of November is the end of the year. We must try our best." 'INSUFFICIENT'
WTA chairman and CEO Steve Simon said the video is "insufficient" evidence of Peng's safety.
He said: "While it is positive to see her, it remains unclear if she is free and able to make decisions and take actions on her own, without coercion or external interference,"
"This video alone is insufficient... I remain concerned about Peng Shuai's health and safety and that the allegation of sexual assault is being censored and swept under the rug."
Chinese state media shared an email allegedly sent from Peng claiming she is fine but doubts were cast over the email's authenticity
The published email said: "Hello everyone this is Peng Shuai.
“Regarding the recent news released on the official website of the WTA, the content has not been confirmed or verified by myself and it was released without my consent.
“The news in that release, including the allegation of sexual assault, is not true.
“I’m not missing, nor am I unsafe. I’ve just been resting at home and everything is fine.
“Thank you again for caring about me. If the WTA publishes any more news about me, please verify it with me, and release it with my consent.
“As a professional tennis player, I thank you all for your companionship and consideration.
“I hope to promote Chinese tennis with you all if I have the chance in the future. I hope Chinese tennis will become better and better.
“Once again, thank you for your consideration.”
Steve Simon said the message “only raises my concerns as to her safety and whereabouts”.

Nole won't skip Australia, it's his best GS and maybe by Roland Garros it'll be too late to win another. There are young players who are clearly getting better by day, and if Rafa is in good form he'll be the favourite at Roland Garros anyway, it's simply too risky for his legacy to not play the Australian Open

yeah Zverev unfortunately seems primed to win a slam next year . The only things working against him are
A) he hasn't shown an ability to win multiple marathon best-of-5 matches.
B) while he's won huge titles such as YEC, Olympics and other Masters, he hasn't won the 2 Masters with the biggest draws Indian Wells and Miami
C) it doesn't seem like he's going to win Wimbledon any time soon as he has no grass titles and has only reached the RD16 of there twice
Personally I hope he keeps landing in Djokovic's half of the draw so they can tire each other out in the SF if both get there

I can't name an existing tournament, but I like to imagine fantasy tournaments.
Like an October Slam held on a Mediterranean island or in North Africa; on the coast, so close to the sea the players can hear the sapphire waves crashing on the white sand; lazy palm trees in the breeze; the main courts in the design of Roman colosseums, gleaming white marble adorned with statues; lower courts like little Greek temples; clay surface; emperor's box becomes the players' boxes; and the trophies like relics from antiquity, maybe shields similar to the Venus Rosewater.
Or a grass tournament in New Zealand, among meadows carpeted with flowers, with great snow-capped mountains encircling the courts ...
... am I the only nutcase who does this?

Nick Kyrgios blames ‘sexual frustration’ for tennis struggles
Being away from a significant other early into his tennis career affected Nick Kyrgios in a very specific way.
Speaking recently on his “No Boundaries” podcast, the Australian tennis star explained how his “sexual frustration” played a role in his athletic performance.
“With my first girlfriend, I was away from her for six months at a time,” Kyrgios said, according to news.com.au.
“When you’re trying to perform at the highest level, you start missing someone like emotionally, physically and it becomes a sexual frustration.”
Kyrgios, whose former flames include Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya and Croatian-Australian tennis player Ajla Tomljanović, further detailed that spending a significant amount of time away from a loved one can impact “your work, your mood, everything.”
“I’m on court and I can’t play because I’m a bit horny, if you know what I mean,” he said.
Krygios was once ranked as high as No. 13 world in 2016, but has plummeted to 91 this year. Kyrgios, known for his frequent on-court outbursts, has hinted at retirement in recent interviews.
Although Kyrgios didn’t specify his lady in waiting at the time, the 26-year-old — who was most recently linked to Chiara Passari — said he was “the moodiest motherf—ker when [he] was away from [his] missus for that long.”
Kyrgios and Passari were involved in an incident last month in which the police were involved, though “no offenses were disclosed.” Passari seemingly posted a photo on Instagram of Kyrgios in bed with another woman, sparking an argument between the two.
In addition to his love life, Kyrgios said that time apart from his family also soured some relations.
“My relationship with my family wasn’t great a few years ago because I was always away and didn’t have my family around me,” Kyrgios said.
He later added, “I pushed everyone who was close to me away and I fell out with people and that’s something I’d never want again.”

Amazing, so is Novaxx really, really going to skip the AO just because of .. a vaccine? He's dumber than dirt.
by Anonymous | reply 249 | November 28, 2021 5:30 PM |
R249, it’s possible that this is a blackmail attempt, with plausible deniability: “Really? You believed my father? What about Srdjan Djokovic says ‘this guy is totally credible’?

And Rublev's collapse is complete after losing to Feliciano López. He is lucky Alcaraz has covid

What the fuck is Mardy Fish smoking? The USA has three players who are playing well right now (Tiafoe, Paul and Fritz.) But he selects Isner for the Davis Cup roster (and not Paul or Fritz) and then plays Isner twice where he has won just 6 games over 4 sets.
by Anonymous | reply 252 | November 28, 2021 6:51 PM |
Did Paul and Fritz want to play? Sometimes players take themselves out of the draw for various reasons.
I don't think Mardy is sucking Isner's cock.

by Anonymous | reply 258 | November 29, 2021 10:16 AM |
That's pretty random. She has been in awful form lately (not helped by her injuries) but won a title just this year in Nottingham. I know she had some vaccine hesitancy, so I wonder if that has anything to do with it too? I never liked her as a player. All the nervous tics and mechanical looking strokes. Some of the most hideous volley technique you'll ever see (super choppy).
But she was toiling away in ITFs until her late 20s, so she can be very proud of the breakthroughs she had (SF at 3/4 grand slams, Miami champion). Honestly I just always go back to her outburst in the match against Barty to the umpire: "No you listen to me!! We are out here busting our chops like no other!" I quote that all the time lol. There's a bit of Catherine Tate or French/Saunders to her mannerisms.

When is Asian swing next year?
by Anonymous | reply 271 | December 2, 2021 5:03 AM |
This is great for all parties involved. Brave move considering China gives them close to half their revenue, but it also works out for them because the holes in the calendar from the Asian swing (due to ongoing COVID) were a nightmare to organise around. They probably realised they had over-invested in the Shenzhen YEC (10 year contract) and this is a great way to sever ties with a part of the schedule that was never really working anyway.
The only ones who will probably miss out are the Chinese tennis players who may never play a tournament again (if the government orders them not to). Qiang Wang hadn't played in months already since the Asian games, and neither had some others. I wonder if Zhang Shuai will ever return at this point? Zheng SaiSai and Qinwen Zheng too.

Our favourite little homophobe Rune is not happy he was not nominated to newcomer of the year
by Anonymous | reply 273 | December 3, 2021 6:04 PM |
who are the nominees?
by Anonymous | reply 274 | December 3, 2021 6:24 PM |
Baez, Brooksby, Cerundolo, Gaston and Nakashima.
Rune has reasons to complain because he went up more than 370 positions, but the nominees are all top 100 and Rune is number 102.
To be fair without the frozen rankings he'd be top 100 and at a very young age. He has the bad luck of being the same age Alcaraz and all the focus are on the spaniard but insulting (himself) apart, he did a great season
by Anonymous | reply 275 | December 3, 2021 6:38 PM |
Rune may be a cunt but he has nice thighs.
by Anonymous | reply 276 | December 3, 2021 9:07 PM |
That Rune was using the phrase as an insult/epithet is the point, not whether he was directing it at himself or someone else.

So Djokovic and Krajinovic lost the deciding doubles to Mektic (grrrrr) and Pavic, sending Croatia into the Davis Cup finals. The other semi is between Germany and the Russian Tennis Federation team.

R281 these doubles players know how to work their angles. Robert Farah is constantly stretching his taint out on camera too (sometimes in slow mo lol). They're all a bit underrated compared to the singles players, there's even something cute about his partner Pavic.
Doubles is also the reason Croatia is constantly able to snatch wigs in Davis Cup. Hopefully King Porna Coric can properly return next year to action and bolster the team even more.

It’s doubles match.

R278 good to see Felix show some personality
hopefully he finally wins some singles titles next year.
by Anonymous | reply 285 | December 4, 2021 2:30 AM |
R277 True, but it's not the same to insult yourself than insult others, anyway the only way to deflect the effects of the insult would be coming out (something he obviously didn't do).
He is a little spoiled diva (the behaviour of his mother shows why) and he is going to give us a lot of akward moments specially if he has to live at Carlos Alcaraz's shadow for long time, He is not born for being the number 2 (unfortunately for him i think Carlos is more talented)
by Anonymous | reply 286 | December 4, 2021 10:48 AM |
Alcaraz is immensely likeable and seems to have a good spirit. Neither is true of Rune.
by Anonymous | reply 287 | December 4, 2021 4:15 PM |
But to be fair, Rune is more or less like Tsitsipas, Zverev, Medvedev. Yes, he put his foot on his mouth once, but his bad behaviour is nothing new on the circuit.
I'm all for different kinds of tennis players and guys with personality, the problem is 99% of them seem to have awful personalities, for every Ruud you have five Tsitsipas. It'll be difficult enough to replace the big three but unless they found someone likeable and with charisma they are toast
by Anonymous | reply 288 | December 4, 2021 6:44 PM |

- I hope Venus can compete and do well in her absence (like she did most of 2017, so close to a big result) but she has her own broken old body to deal with.
- Wawrinka is also out, it feels like he hasn't played in forever. This is definitely a transitional period for tennis.
- ITF refuses to remove tournaments in China despite the WTA doing so.
- Guy Forget is no longer the tournament director at Roland Garros. Rumours are that Amelie Mauresmo is one of the top names being considered to replace him.

by Anonymous | reply 368 | December 18, 2021 3:01 AM |
I know Venus and Serena did this same one a few years ago and they were laughing at the net and slapping each other on the back because they both weren't expecting to go in so hard for an exhibition. Serena was like 'gurl you didn't have to do all that.' The Serena/Osaka Adelaide one was godawful though.
I assume sometimes they have a winner in advance if the players are close (and especially if one is playing at his/her home country), but depending on how good the rallies are going they might get swept up in the moment and try a little harder (definitely to try hit more trick shots).

Rafa is a pillar of integrity, he isn't going to fake covid. But hang on to your doping delusions if that's what keeps you in lala land.

I wonder if Wimbledon has carried on paying insurance and what their premiums are now. Media reports suggest that they got about £114m for the cancelled 2020 tournament from paying in £25.5m in insurance over 17 years. The French Open, who did not have insurance, re-scheduled their May 2020 tournament to September the same year and still incurred a loss of about €130 million.

Barcelona prosecutors are requesting a four-year prison term for former tennis star Arantxa Sánchez Vicario, and a similar term for her ex-husband Josep Santacana, over allegations of fraudulently transferring assets to avoid paying a large debt.

Juicy. The Spanish have been giving no fucks about going after celebs for tax fraud - Shakira, Cristiano Ronaldo, Montserrat Caballe, etc.

Sam Stosur is still playing?

I think she'll retire soon. She had a great career

She's never played well at the AO, at least in singles.

Aside from Li Na, I've never seen a top player produce such shit tennis on a regular basis as Sam Stosur. She'd often play the Bank of the West tournament and I'd always wear helmet when watching her play as she couldn't go two games without shanking the ball into the stands.

Apparently this thread’s been paywalled, and the few of us still trying to talk tennis have moved on to the new thread.
