Can chewing hard chips cause a gum injury?

I don’t think it’s gingivitis or anything like that. Anyway, when I was chewing some hard chips a spot in my upper left back gums started hurting. It’s been feeling weird ever since and the spot is very sensitive. There’s bleeding there when I brush my teeth, too.

This has happened before and when I went to the dentist they said nothing was wrong (by the time I got the appointment my gums had healed, I believe).

There’s no blood when flossing. The injury is above the teeth.

Find a dentist that owns a boat, he will find something wrong, I am sure.

Were your chips the wrong shape?

It’s a sharp object and the parts of your gums you don’t floss are fairly sensitive. You’re fine.

"can repeated trauma to a very sensitive body part by a hard solid potato chip cause damage?"

The answer is yes, OP. Practice good and REGULAR dental hygiene and your gums will be able to quickly heal after you abuse them like this. In the future, consider that humans did not evolve our mouths to chew on highly processed fried potato chips, and strongly consider kicking the habit.

Hard chips?

Are you a beaver, OP?

You rather smell like a beaver.

I chipped a tooth on a pita chip.

This is some odd chop troll. Wasn't there a thread yesterday?

by Anonymousreply 10October 28, 2021 3:23 AM

Did you aggressively eat a whole bag and did you eat the chips after not having had them in a long time? Because I did the same thing some time ago and ended up scraping the roof of my mouth so bad that I could not even drink water without hurting it for a while.

When I used to eat Doritos often a piece would break off and lodge between my teeth and gums, sometimes such a small piece that I couldn’t pull it out with my tongue or fingernail. I was always too afraid to use a toothpick, afraid it would just push the piece in further. Usually it would work itself out eventually and everything would go back to normal. However, occasionally it would cause bleeding and, once or twice, an abscess. That is why I didn’t like eating Doritos and eventually gave them up.

by Anonymousreply 13October 28, 2021 4:47 AM

Yes. This happens to me all the time, OP. Often the injury is somewhere on the roof of my mouth.

by Anonymousreply 14October 28, 2021 4:50 AM

I’m sure it can, I know I’ve hurt my gums with crusty French bread.

by Anonymousreply 15October 28, 2021 5:49 AM

Yes. If they are poker chips.

by Anonymousreply 16October 28, 2021 6:13 AM

yes definitely!

I have a similar experience with certain Texas toasts, the one sold in Sam's Club always hurts a bit.

by Anonymousreply 17October 28, 2021 6:48 AM

That used to happen to me when I ate Captain Crunch. It's fine, OP. Or you have oral cancer. Who knows.

by Anonymousreply 18October 28, 2021 7:00 AM

OP, please define exactly what kind of "hard chips" you were chewing on.

by Anonymousreply 19October 28, 2021 7:15 AM

WTF is a "hard chip"?

When I was eating some crunchy granola right out of the bag, a bonded back tooth chipped. Part of the tooth broke off with the bonding. My excellent dentist fixed it, I didn't need a cap. He re-bonded the tooth and built up the chipped area.

Ugh without realizing it I cracked a tooth during the pandemic and ended up with a root abscess. I didn't know it was cracked until I (probably months later) got a sudden toothache and an infection spreading into my jaw. Absolutely ghastly.

Maebo’s One Ton Chips. They are from Hilo, Hawaii, but can cause serious jaw/gum injury. Very Yummy, but should be listed on How did I Survive Childhood in the 70s? They are still around, though.
