Was a bigger star than Tom Hanks when they started Bosom Buddies, only to see Hanks take off in popularity with the audience. He managed to handle it well with grace. I think that he got to work with Bob Newhart for so long was a a fair trade off.

Fun Peter Scolari trivia: He made his film acting debut in an X-rated movie from 1978, "Take Off." Sadly, it was an acting role only. No nudity, no sex from Pete. He used the stage name "Barney Tramble" in this one.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | October 22, 2021 5:30 PM |
This really makes me sad. I just loved Peter Scolari and yes, he was so hot in his "Bosom Buddies" days. He had the best ass on TV back at that time.
I've posted this on DL before: I was on the 1 train one evening on my way home from work. The train was pretty full and there were no seats left by the time this elderly black woman got on at one of the stops. This white man who was sitting and reading his book noticed her and immediately stood up and gave her his seat. It was Peter Scolari.

R58 best TV intro ever - this is dubbed though because they never had the rights to the Billy Joel version when the show originally aired. Whoever did this video ,however, left in the very end “leave me alone” from the cover version, which is kind of weird (why not replace the entire thing?)

Loving those super short 70s (80s?) shorts in the video at R58
In the last scene Scolari's baseball shirt pretty much entirely covers up the shorts.
He had a smoking body for a 70s guy too- lots of definition.
I suspect you'd get arrested for public lewdness if you wore those today.

I love in Julia's tweet at R9 there is a huge picture of the two of them in the background. They were so vapid and funny - such a big improvement over the original maid and the next door neighbor from season 1 that they replaced. Newhart was a show that made changes that actually improved it.

It is indeed a tradition, but that's not at all what you said. What you said was that it was "proper DL formatting." and it is absolutely not--there are no rules for how to post when people die.
No one has to follow a certain format because you're childish or Aspie-ish and demand that everything to be the same.

As someone else said upthread, it was mostly luck on Hanks' part. He's a very talented actor, no doubt, just saying Scolari was equally so and should have enjoyed similar success. Still, he had a fine career and much to be proud of.
To Hanks' credit, he has never to my knowledge ever tried to distance himself from BB. He's always spoken fondly of it and he and Scolari remained friends for over 40 years. Maybe he'll speak on it later or possibly never at all but I'm sure he's very hurt tonight.

Hanks' film career is odd
How'd he get two lead roles in 1984 (including Splash) when he had virtually no film experience and just a flop sitcom
by Anonymous | reply 119 | October 23, 2021 4:37 AM |
Well, it ran for two seasons so it wasn't a complete flop r119. Plus Hanks had gotten good notices and popularity for his portrayal of Uncle Ned on Family Ties. He was very likable and suited the parts in Splash and Bachelor Party.

That seems strange to me. Ok then, I'll guess I'll wait for Wendie Jo to comment first, but I'm more interested in hearing what Mary has to say, since I enjoyed Newhart much more than BB.

The ABC News piece on his death mentioned only that he was "best known as Tom Hanks' co-star on Bosom Buddies."
Kind of a shitty obituary, to be remembered only for having a relationship with someone who was more famous than you. He was on Newhart for six years in the 1980s, and Newhart is still going on the air in reruns -- Bosom Buddies doesn't.

[quote]This was my TV family when I was 9. Today, we lost our family leader, Peter Scolari. Peter was a father figure and teacher and in the 24 years since this photo was taken, he never left my heart, not for an instant. I am sending all my love to his real life family and all my embraces to the rest of our tv one @barbiealynwoods @hillarytuck thank you #peterscolari . For all that you gave us. 🖤

I didn't know he had problems with booze and pills. Apparently it lasted for a long time.

R85 Having a TV career all those years is pretty good..not movie star good but at least he worked steadily.

It’s nice reading all the touching tributes. Seems like he was universally loved. Always a shame when the good ones go too soon.

Why has Tom Hanks been so silent?
by Anonymous | reply 152 | October 23, 2021 8:26 PM |
R152 Beats me.
by Anonymous | reply 153 | October 23, 2021 8:28 PM |
hmmm, did Susan Dey work with Scolari? She was pretty much doing LA Law when he was on Newhart, so their paths wouldn't have crossed then. I don't recall them EVER working together.
by Anonymous | reply 154 | October 23, 2021 8:31 PM |
Thank you dearest r152. I'm not ready yet. Xxx.
by Anonymous | reply 155 | October 23, 2021 8:33 PM |
@r155, Well, get ready, this is real life not a rehearsal for a movie role. Say something nice and encouraging about your lifelong friend and "Bosom Buddy"

Tom’s waiting for Wendie Jo Sperber, Lucille Benson, Tom Poston and Mary Frank to make their statements
by Anonymous | reply 161 | October 23, 2021 8:44 PM |
^ Wow, Wendie Jo Sperber, I haven't thought about her in a million years. She was like the first cool funny fat chick. I wonder what became of her?
by Anonymous | reply 162 | October 23, 2021 8:48 PM |
She died from breast cancer way back in 2005.
by Anonymous | reply 163 | October 23, 2021 8:50 PM |
^ Ok, then, thanks...
What did Tom Hanks have to say about that?

Wendy Jo Sperber is never far from DL’s thoughts.

Tom Hanks remained good friends with Peter Scolari over the years. I'm sure he's hurting right now.
by Anonymous | reply 171 | October 23, 2021 9:24 PM |
But how selfish of him not to pour out his grief for the rest of us to see on Twitter and Instagram, R171.

R28, he was. I worked in a low-level position on Newhart and he was always kind and gracious especially to the little people.
by Anonymous | reply 178 | October 23, 2021 10:56 PM |
Peter Scolari and Julia Duffy were comedy gold. Newhart was one of the great shows of a generation. The whole cast and writing were superb.

by Anonymous | reply 182 | October 24, 2021 1:49 AM |
Did he not get along with Hanks? Kinda shocked Tom hasn't said anything.
by Anonymous | reply 183 | October 24, 2021 2:24 AM |
Did "Bosom Buddies" ever have a proper finale? I remember that the true identities of Kip and Henry were revealed in one of the shows. The Donna Dixon character, who Kip has lusted after the entire series, is enraged at the deception and is ranting at Kip; after listening to her tirade for a few minutes he grabs her and forcibly kisses her. I think that makes her realize she loves him. It was really stupid.
by Anonymous | reply 184 | October 24, 2021 4:19 AM |
It didn't have a finale, it was just canceled. I think it was still doing well in the ratings, too.
by Anonymous | reply 185 | October 24, 2021 4:21 AM |
The Jeffersons didn’t have a finale after 11 seasons! That’s a true slap in the face.
by Anonymous | reply 186 | October 24, 2021 4:49 AM |
He was a part of the golden era of the American Sitcom with Bosom Buddies.
It is always hard being the straight man (no pun intended). Tim Hanks blew up after BB because he was "the funny one."
RIP Peter!

by Anonymous | reply 188 | October 24, 2021 4:59 AM |
Bosom Buddies only ran like a year and a half. I think they resurrected it and reran it on primetime a few years later (maybe when Hanks hit it big? Not sure.)
Wendie Jo Sperber was so funny. (also died really young from cancer.)
I just remember as a kid there was a joke where Hanks used the Jack and the Beanstalk story as a metaphor for something Scolari did.
Sperber misses the point and the joke line was "you didn't even get the beans?" said annoyed at Scolari. You had to be there and be 7 I guess.
by Anonymous | reply 189 | October 24, 2021 5:00 AM |
R189 that’s how I remember it. They reran it the summer he hit it big with Splash & Bachelor Party. I assumed it was a first run show and I was confused (being 6 and all) how he could be in both the TV show and starring in movies at the same time.

R193 is the queen who finds out a celebrity is dead, gives a gay gasp, then quickly texts everyone she knows so she can say she was the first to find out. Then she goes and shoves six Twinkies down her gullet because she's so proud of herself.

The Rialto Report just put up an interview they did with him in recent years. He seemed to not mind talking about his first movie role in a porn film (Take Off), even though he remained fully dressed and didn't perform sex on screen. Also he didn't look down on those who did, it just wasn't for him. Refreshing to see a celeb who isn't full of themselves.

Peter was also a very talented and delightful musical theatre performer, lest we forget. He has a warm place in my heart for two Encores! performances. He sang the tongue-twisting and hilarious “They Couldn’t Compare to You” as Mercury (the cute god) in Cole Porter’s OUT OF THIS WORLD. And he shared five glorious minutes with Mme.Ebersole singing “I Can’t Get Started” and playing the very funny scene in which it appears in the Ira Gershwin/Vernon Duke ZIEGFELD FOLLIES OF 1936. Definitive, and thankfully recorded for posterity. He was a warm, charming performer and it seems everyone loved him (and others loved his ass). Put me in both camps.

R201, were both of the productions you reference with Scolari recorded? I did some searching and don't find them online.
by Anonymous | reply 202 | October 25, 2021 9:32 AM |
He may have looked like a choir boy, but he was quite the little pussy hound! He had 4 kids and humped on 4 wives!
by Anonymous | reply 203 | October 25, 2021 9:43 AM |
Yes, R202, both were recorded.I found the Out of this World CD (DRG) on the Sears (!) website, also on Amazon and Ziegfeld Follies (Decca Broadway) on Amazon too. Both are rather overpriced ($25 range) but they’re worth every penny, not just for the Scolari tracks: two of the most delicious scores of the Golden Age. And if the OOTW CD sends you then to the OBC on Columbia—in general an even better performance—you won’t be sorry.

R204, thanks for the follow-up. I enjoyed a number of seasons at Encores!, but waited far too long to subscribe to the series... I missed so many amazing productions. Side note, I sat through and L-O-V-E-D the "Paint Your Wagon" production, ordered that CD. Man, I think I love the production of the show and really do not love the score... something just doesn't translate when listening only. Such a drag, because I was amazed at Justin Guarini's performance on stage, but on the CD, it just doesn't "sing" as it did in City Center.

All except Truman’s press ought to be you, R207. There was Melisande, the platinum blond, how I loved to ruffle her locks, There was bright Aurora and Pandora who let me open her… The last word of this verse is omitted in both recordings, but is it performed in the theatre? NOT singing it it seems to me signals the incredibly obscene double entendre. And the verse actually ends with the offending word in the Complete Lyrics book. But it really is better unsung, isn’t it?

R184, I remember that episode. Don't recall if it was the finale, though. IIRC, they all found out the truth about Kip and Henry over the course of the last season (as opposed to the first season when only Amy knew).

Henry was supposed to be a nice guy but there was an episode where he was an incredible dick. I think he goes to his high school reunion and encounters a deaf girl he knew from high school. She greets him warmly....and he runs away from her! Seems back in the day she invited him to go with the prom with her; not wanted to go with her (She's DEAF. Who wants a deaf prom date?) he tells her a lie, saying he has something else to do that night. He in fact does go to the prom with another girl. He didn't expect to see the deaf girl at them prom figuring she'd be dateless. but she DOES come to the prom, accompanied by her father. She encounters him kissing his date and forlornly confronts him about his deception. He runs away from her, leaving her crying in her father's arms. UGH! How horrible. But at the reunion she again she has an encounter with him and tells him she didn't hold his behavior against him, he was just a kid back then and kids do things like that. I think they share a dance. It was supposed to heartwarming but it was really an excruciating episode. Henry's cruelty was truly awful, and the deaf girl was made out to be like some kind of a saint. I thought the whole thing was just disturbing.

I never knew Scolari was drugged out of his mind!
