Peter Scolari is DEAD TO ME!

Didn’t see a thread. RIP.

by Anonymousreply 221November 4, 2021 4:50 AM

Aww, that’s a shame. He was a cutie.

by Anonymousreply 1October 22, 2021 4:23 PM

Scolari seemed hot to me on Bosom Buddies and Newhart. He showed leg on Bosom Buddies.

by Anonymousreply 2October 22, 2021 4:23 PM

Was he the one on that show, with the fat juicy ass, being eaten by that fugly Star Wars dude? Too bad. He had a nice juicy ass.

by Anonymousreply 3October 22, 2021 4:25 PM

Sad shit. Fo realz, yo!

by Anonymousreply 4October 22, 2021 4:26 PM

Did Alec Baldwin shoot him?

by Anonymousreply 5October 22, 2021 4:27 PM

R5 Yes! Bring on the Alec Baldwin shooting everybody memes! I heard he shot JFK.

He said it took him almost 50 years to finally deal with his drinking and pill popping issues.

I'm glad he cleaned himself up. Sad it happened to late and now this.

I too suggest Alec Baldwin as a suspect.

by Anonymousreply 10October 22, 2021 4:40 PM

Any pictures of said buttocks?

by Anonymousreply 11October 22, 2021 4:40 PM

Oh no, I loved Peter Scolari, he was always one of my favorites.

Harvey Fierstein tweeted a lovely note about working with him on Hairspray.

Farewell is such a nice way to put it... RIP is such an empty thing to say. Like there's a choice. You're dead.

by Anonymousreply 13October 22, 2021 4:42 PM

How did he show up most of the month to shoot Newhart?

I met him a few times; genuinely nice guy. RIP.

by Anonymousreply 14October 22, 2021 4:45 PM

He was such a cute guy. I liked him on the show "Girls."

by Anonymousreply 15October 22, 2021 4:47 PM

Wow, he seemed very youthful. I've always loved him since his Bosom Buddies days and Newhart. He was good on Evil too and in Girls. He was a cutie and didn't seem like your typical Hollywood jerk.

by Anonymousreply 16October 22, 2021 4:47 PM

Was a bigger star than Tom Hanks when they started Bosom Buddies, only to see Hanks take off in popularity with the audience. He managed to handle it well with grace. I think that he got to work with Bob Newhart for so long was a a fair trade off.

by Anonymousreply 17October 22, 2021 4:47 PM

RIP...

by Anonymousreply 18October 22, 2021 4:48 PM

Who knew Bob Newhart would outlive him?

by Anonymousreply 19October 22, 2021 4:48 PM

I remember him from Honey I Shrunk the Kids tv series.

Did he? See R8.

Has Holland Taylor commented yet?

by Anonymousreply 22October 22, 2021 4:51 PM

He was really good in "Gotham," he absolutely nailed the camp factor and was still a hot daddy.

by Anonymousreply 23October 22, 2021 4:51 PM

What kind of cancer?

by Anonymousreply 24October 22, 2021 4:52 PM

That's sad! I always liked him.

by Anonymousreply 25October 22, 2021 4:55 PM

Anyone with a Ouija heard from Wendie Jo Sperber?

by Anonymousreply 26October 22, 2021 4:58 PM

Holland looks the same 40 years later.

by Anonymousreply 27October 22, 2021 5:00 PM

Sad. He always seemed like a mensch.

by Anonymousreply 28October 22, 2021 5:02 PM

I always liked him. He was a welcome presence on Evil the past two season. I had no idea he was sick.

by Anonymousreply 29October 22, 2021 5:03 PM

Oh, this makes me sad. He was such a hot nerd twunk on Bosom Buddies and Newhart.

by Anonymousreply 30October 22, 2021 5:05 PM

He looks great in R8.

by Anonymousreply 38October 22, 2021 5:16 PM

I won't pretend to have kept up with his career, but he and Julia Duffy were comedic gold on "Newhart."

You win again!!!!

by Anonymousreply 41October 22, 2021 5:22 PM

Oh no! Newhart is one of the shows I can watch again and again, and he and Julie Duffy were such a fantastic comedic pairing.

I've never seen Bosom Buddies, but now I'm tempted to have a scrounge around YouTube to see if I can find it.

Only 66 too. Fucking cunting cancer.

Fun Peter Scolari trivia: He made his film acting debut in an X-rated movie from 1978, "Take Off." Sadly, it was an acting role only. No nudity, no sex from Pete. He used the stage name "Barney Tramble" in this one.

by Anonymousreply 44October 22, 2021 5:30 PM

This really makes me sad. I just loved Peter Scolari and yes, he was so hot in his "Bosom Buddies" days. He had the best ass on TV back at that time.

I've posted this on DL before: I was on the 1 train one evening on my way home from work. The train was pretty full and there were no seats left by the time this elderly black woman got on at one of the stops. This white man who was sitting and reading his book noticed her and immediately stood up and gave her his seat. It was Peter Scolari.

by Anonymousreply 45October 22, 2021 5:34 PM

Black butts matter.

by Anonymousreply 46October 22, 2021 5:40 PM

He's was the ultimate college professor fantasy for a while.

by Anonymousreply 47October 22, 2021 5:41 PM

Peter Scolari was one of the good guys on and off-screen.

Rest in Peace.

Just the other day I read that Peter was on a plane with Tom Hanks this year (they’re good friends) when Tom was arrested, brought before a military tribunal, and executed. Peter was allowed to go free, which shows what a good guy he was. This was some obvious QAnon bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 59October 22, 2021 7:08 PM

R58 Lots of great ass and thigh shots in those opening credits.

by Anonymousreply 60October 22, 2021 7:12 PM

R55 what does racism have to go with apes? NOTHING !!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 61October 22, 2021 7:13 PM

How will "Hannah Banana" manage to make this all about her?

Guesses?

by Anonymousreply 62October 22, 2021 7:14 PM

R58 best TV intro ever - this is dubbed though because they never had the rights to the Billy Joel version when the show originally aired. Whoever did this video ,however, left in the very end “leave me alone” from the cover version, which is kind of weird (why not replace the entire thing?)

by Anonymousreply 63October 22, 2021 7:19 PM

Loving those super short 70s (80s?) shorts in the video at R58

In the last scene Scolari's baseball shirt pretty much entirely covers up the shorts.

He had a smoking body for a 70s guy too- lots of definition.

I suspect you'd get arrested for public lewdness if you wore those today.

by Anonymousreply 66October 22, 2021 7:25 PM

And Susan Dey, R64?

I suppose she will once again remain silent.

by Anonymousreply 67October 22, 2021 7:25 PM

by Anonymousreply 71October 22, 2021 7:50 PM

I love in Julia's tweet at R9 there is a huge picture of the two of them in the background. They were so vapid and funny - such a big improvement over the original maid and the next door neighbor from season 1 that they replaced. Newhart was a show that made changes that actually improved it.

by Anonymousreply 72October 22, 2021 7:51 PM

R9, how sad that she isn't verified.

by Anonymousreply 73October 22, 2021 7:52 PM

R52 is into bestiality. Fucking monkey faces! Yuck.

by Anonymousreply 74October 22, 2021 7:59 PM

I haven't seen Bosom Buddies in years, but for a show that is largely known for tis gimmick and Tom Hanks first big role, it really did have a pretty talented ensemble. It is too bad that it did not last a little longer.

by Anonymousreply 75October 22, 2021 8:01 PM

His body back in the BB days was spectacular. I've read multiple times that he and Hanks had remained close friends since those days. I'm sure Hanks is beyond sad.

How I wish the shorts that Scolari wore in the opening credits of BB would make a return. Good Lord they just made men so sexy.

And yes, he really did have a fine body for many years.

Peter was delightful in so many roles, sorry to read that he had battled pills and booze for so long... even if you're functioning during those years, there are so many missed opportunities along the way.

r95 the Susan Dey shit is beyond tired. You Aspie freaks need to quit.

I was very happy when he won an Emmy in 2016 for GIRLS, though I’ve never seen the show. I always felt bad for him that Hanks’ career skyrocketed after BB and his didn’t. He was equally as good on the show.

Thanks to the poster who included the Oprah show clip. It’s nice to see how happy he was with his wife. He’d been married 3 times before so I’m glad it finally worked out for him.

Being successful in show business has a lot to do with luck. Tom Hanks was luckier. But Peter Scolari did have a steady acting career. I think he did quite well.

by Anonymousreply 101October 23, 2021 12:44 AM

[quote]That's not running shit in the ground, R95, that's proper DL formatting.

Calling that "proper DL formatting" means you're an Aspie idiiot, R99, who has no business trying to police other running DL gags.

[quote] Say...what, [R102]? I pointed out that the "...is DEAD TO ME" format is DL tradition. How is that policing?

It is indeed a tradition, but that's not at all what you said. What you said was that it was "proper DL formatting." and it is absolutely not--there are no rules for how to post when people die.

No one has to follow a certain format because you're childish or Aspie-ish and demand that everything to be the same.

Stop being both an asshole and a whiner.

RIP Peter Scholari.

I just noticed Hanks hasn't posted to IG or Twitter in over a year.

by Anonymousreply 116October 23, 2021 4:17 AM

Terrific actor.

Crazy to think that Newhart won no Emmys. Both Scolari and Julia Duffy were perfect in their roles. They truly deserved Supporting Actor/Actress awards.

by Anonymousreply 117October 23, 2021 4:24 AM

[quote]I was very happy when he won an Emmy in 2016 for GIRLS, though I’ve never seen the show. I always felt bad for him that Hanks’ career skyrocketed after BB and his didn’t. He was equally as good on the show.

As someone else said upthread, it was mostly luck on Hanks' part. He's a very talented actor, no doubt, just saying Scolari was equally so and should have enjoyed similar success. Still, he had a fine career and much to be proud of.

To Hanks' credit, he has never to my knowledge ever tried to distance himself from BB. He's always spoken fondly of it and he and Scolari remained friends for over 40 years. Maybe he'll speak on it later or possibly never at all but I'm sure he's very hurt tonight.

by Anonymousreply 118October 23, 2021 4:33 AM

Hanks' film career is odd

How'd he get two lead roles in 1984 (including Splash) when he had virtually no film experience and just a flop sitcom

by Anonymousreply 119October 23, 2021 4:37 AM

Well, it ran for two seasons so it wasn't a complete flop r119. Plus Hanks had gotten good notices and popularity for his portrayal of Uncle Ned on Family Ties. He was very likable and suited the parts in Splash and Bachelor Party.

by Anonymousreply 120October 23, 2021 4:52 AM

Hanks is the modern-day Jimmy Stuart.

by Anonymousreply 121October 23, 2021 4:54 AM

It's STEWART, you fat whore!

by Anonymousreply 122October 23, 2021 4:59 AM

Scolari always was kind of labeled as not being as successful as Hanks. He was on a hit sitcom by 1984 bouncing back from Bosom Buddies at the same time as Hanks. I guess TV was still considered not as big a deal as film back then.

(Hanks' career was really up and down in the 80s)

by Anonymousreply 123October 23, 2021 4:59 AM

Peter Scolari...a consistently good, engaging and fascinating actor. Very sad. He was so young.

by Anonymousreply 139October 23, 2021 5:27 PM

Why would Mary wait for Wendie Jo to comment? Why, because BB came before Newhart? Is that some kind of courtesy that actors extend each other when commenting on a colleague's death? That seems strange to me. Ok then, I'll guess I'll wait for Wendie Jo to comment first, but I'm more interested in hearing what Mary has to say, since I enjoyed Newhart much more than BB.

by Anonymousreply 142October 23, 2021 5:47 PM

The ABC News piece on his death mentioned only that he was "best known as Tom Hanks' co-star on Bosom Buddies."

Kind of a shitty obituary, to be remembered only for having a relationship with someone who was more famous than you. He was on Newhart for six years in the 1980s, and Newhart is still going on the air in reruns -- Bosom Buddies doesn't.

by Anonymousreply 143October 23, 2021 5:59 PM

They should have said "best remembered for looking way hotter shirtless than Tom Hanks ever did."

by Anonymousreply 144October 23, 2021 6:01 PM

Did he dabble with men at all? I'm sure some exec got his hands on him.

by Anonymousreply 145October 23, 2021 6:05 PM

In a quick news report, Scolari only matters in the context of his work with Tom Hanks, which is unfortunate.

He was hilarious on Newhart and touching when he came out on Girls. Very underrated actor.

Sweet post by Thomas Dekker

[quote]This was my TV family when I was 9. Today, we lost our family leader, Peter Scolari. Peter was a father figure and teacher and in the 24 years since this photo was taken, he never left my heart, not for an instant. I am sending all my love to his real life family and all my embraces to the rest of our tv one @barbiealynwoods @hillarytuck thank you #peterscolari . For all that you gave us. 🖤

I didn't know he had problems with booze and pills. Apparently it lasted for a long time.

by Anonymousreply 149October 23, 2021 8:02 PM

R85 Having a TV career all those years is pretty good..not movie star good but at least he worked steadily.

by Anonymousreply 150October 23, 2021 8:22 PM

It’s nice reading all the touching tributes. Seems like he was universally loved. Always a shame when the good ones go too soon.

by Anonymousreply 151October 23, 2021 8:22 PM

Why has Tom Hanks been so silent?

by Anonymousreply 152October 23, 2021 8:26 PM

R152 Beats me.

by Anonymousreply 153October 23, 2021 8:28 PM

hmmm, did Susan Dey work with Scolari? She was pretty much doing LA Law when he was on Newhart, so their paths wouldn't have crossed then. I don't recall them EVER working together.

by Anonymousreply 154October 23, 2021 8:31 PM

Thank you dearest r152. I'm not ready yet. Xxx.

@r155, Well, get ready, this is real life not a rehearsal for a movie role. Say something nice and encouraging about your lifelong friend and "Bosom Buddy"

by Anonymousreply 157October 23, 2021 8:37 PM

Alas? What the hell does that mean?

ugh, Holland Taylor's twitter is a valentine to wokeness. I won't ever be visiting THAT again.

by Anonymousreply 160October 23, 2021 8:40 PM

Tom’s waiting for Wendie Jo Sperber, Lucille Benson, Tom Poston and Mary Frank to make their statements

by Anonymousreply 161October 23, 2021 8:44 PM

^ Wow, Wendie Jo Sperber, I haven't thought about her in a million years. She was like the first cool funny fat chick. I wonder what became of her?

by Anonymousreply 162October 23, 2021 8:48 PM

She died from breast cancer way back in 2005.

by Anonymousreply 163October 23, 2021 8:50 PM

^ Ok, then, thanks...

What did Tom Hanks have to say about that?

by Anonymousreply 164October 23, 2021 8:58 PM

Wendy Jo Sperber is never far from DL’s thoughts.

by Anonymousreply 170October 23, 2021 9:23 PM

Tom Hanks remained good friends with Peter Scolari over the years. I'm sure he's hurting right now.

by Anonymousreply 171October 23, 2021 9:24 PM

But how selfish of him not to pour out his grief for the rest of us to see on Twitter and Instagram, R171.

by Anonymousreply 172October 23, 2021 9:27 PM

[quote] Alas? What the hell does that mean?

by Anonymousreply 176October 23, 2021 9:58 PM

When Tom did a broadway play a few years back Peter was cast in a featured role.

by Anonymousreply 177October 23, 2021 10:23 PM

R28, he was. I worked in a low-level position on Newhart and he was always kind and gracious especially to the little people.

by Anonymousreply 178October 23, 2021 10:56 PM

Peter Scolari and Julia Duffy were comedy gold. Newhart was one of the great shows of a generation. The whole cast and writing were superb.

by Anonymousreply 179October 24, 2021 1:20 AM

[quote]I worked in a low-level position on Newhart and he was always kind and gracious especially to the little people.

There were midgets on that show? All we had was Dr. Jonathan Newman.

We haven't heard from Telma Hopkins yet, have we?

by Anonymousreply 181October 24, 2021 1:48 AM

Or Donna Dixon Aykroyd?

by Anonymousreply 182October 24, 2021 1:49 AM

Did he not get along with Hanks? Kinda shocked Tom hasn't said anything.

by Anonymousreply 183October 24, 2021 2:24 AM

Did "Bosom Buddies" ever have a proper finale? I remember that the true identities of Kip and Henry were revealed in one of the shows. The Donna Dixon character, who Kip has lusted after the entire series, is enraged at the deception and is ranting at Kip; after listening to her tirade for a few minutes he grabs her and forcibly kisses her. I think that makes her realize she loves him. It was really stupid.

by Anonymousreply 184October 24, 2021 4:19 AM

It didn't have a finale, it was just canceled. I think it was still doing well in the ratings, too.

by Anonymousreply 185October 24, 2021 4:21 AM

The Jeffersons didn’t have a finale after 11 seasons! That’s a true slap in the face.

by Anonymousreply 186October 24, 2021 4:49 AM

He was a part of the golden era of the American Sitcom with Bosom Buddies.

It is always hard being the straight man (no pun intended). Tim Hanks blew up after BB because he was "the funny one."

RIP Peter!

by Anonymousreply 187October 24, 2021 4:56 AM

*Tom

by Anonymousreply 188October 24, 2021 4:59 AM

Bosom Buddies only ran like a year and a half. I think they resurrected it and reran it on primetime a few years later (maybe when Hanks hit it big? Not sure.)

Wendie Jo Sperber was so funny. (also died really young from cancer.)

I just remember as a kid there was a joke where Hanks used the Jack and the Beanstalk story as a metaphor for something Scolari did.

Sperber misses the point and the joke line was "you didn't even get the beans?" said annoyed at Scolari. You had to be there and be 7 I guess.

by Anonymousreply 189October 24, 2021 5:00 AM

R189 that’s how I remember it. They reran it the summer he hit it big with Splash & Bachelor Party. I assumed it was a first run show and I was confused (being 6 and all) how he could be in both the TV show and starring in movies at the same time.

by Anonymousreply 190October 24, 2021 5:19 AM

Kind of shocked. I just found watching Sunday Morning. Farewell...Peter Scolari.

R193 is the queen who finds out a celebrity is dead, gives a gay gasp, then quickly texts everyone she knows so she can say she was the first to find out. Then she goes and shoves six Twinkies down her gullet because she's so proud of herself.

by Anonymousreply 197October 24, 2021 6:26 PM

The Rialto Report just put up an interview they did with him in recent years. He seemed to not mind talking about his first movie role in a porn film (Take Off), even though he remained fully dressed and didn't perform sex on screen. Also he didn't look down on those who did, it just wasn't for him. Refreshing to see a celeb who isn't full of themselves.

Peter was also a very talented and delightful musical theatre performer, lest we forget. He has a warm place in my heart for two Encores! performances. He sang the tongue-twisting and hilarious “They Couldn’t Compare to You” as Mercury (the cute god) in Cole Porter’s OUT OF THIS WORLD. And he shared five glorious minutes with Mme.Ebersole singing “I Can’t Get Started” and playing the very funny scene in which it appears in the Ira Gershwin/Vernon Duke ZIEGFELD FOLLIES OF 1936. Definitive, and thankfully recorded for posterity. He was a warm, charming performer and it seems everyone loved him (and others loved his ass). Put me in both camps.

by Anonymousreply 201October 25, 2021 4:48 AM

R201, were both of the productions you reference with Scolari recorded? I did some searching and don't find them online.

by Anonymousreply 202October 25, 2021 9:32 AM

He may have looked like a choir boy, but he was quite the little pussy hound! He had 4 kids and humped on 4 wives!

by Anonymousreply 203October 25, 2021 9:43 AM

Yes, R202, both were recorded.I found the Out of this World CD (DRG) on the Sears (!) website, also on Amazon and Ziegfeld Follies (Decca Broadway) on Amazon too. Both are rather overpriced ($25 range) but they’re worth every penny, not just for the Scolari tracks: two of the most delicious scores of the Golden Age. And if the OOTW CD sends you then to the OBC on Columbia—in general an even better performance—you won’t be sorry.

by Anonymousreply 204October 25, 2021 2:52 PM

Come back R178 and tell us more about behind the scenes of Newhart!

by Anonymousreply 207October 25, 2021 6:16 PM

R204, thanks for the follow-up. I enjoyed a number of seasons at Encores!, but waited far too long to subscribe to the series... I missed so many amazing productions. Side note, I sat through and L-O-V-E-D the "Paint Your Wagon" production, ordered that CD. Man, I think I love the production of the show and really do not love the score... something just doesn't translate when listening only. Such a drag, because I was amazed at Justin Guarini's performance on stage, but on the CD, it just doesn't "sing" as it did in City Center.

by Anonymousreply 208October 25, 2021 9:17 PM

All except Truman’s press ought to be you, R207. There was Melisande, the platinum blond, how I loved to ruffle her locks, There was bright Aurora and Pandora who let me open her… The last word of this verse is omitted in both recordings, but is it performed in the theatre? NOT singing it it seems to me signals the incredibly obscene double entendre. And the verse actually ends with the offending word in the Complete Lyrics book. But it really is better unsung, isn’t it?

R184, I remember that episode. Don't recall if it was the finale, though. IIRC, they all found out the truth about Kip and Henry over the course of the last season (as opposed to the first season when only Amy knew).

Oops - just noticed my comment ^ did not post:

“Has Tom Hanks paid tribute yet? If not and he still has time to do this…”

by Anonymousreply 212October 28, 2021 9:09 PM

Maybe Tom has brain fog from long-hauler Covid and forgot that Peter had died.

by Anonymousreply 213October 29, 2021 2:22 AM

Henry was supposed to be a nice guy but there was an episode where he was an incredible dick. I think he goes to his high school reunion and encounters a deaf girl he knew from high school. She greets him warmly....and he runs away from her! Seems back in the day she invited him to go with the prom with her; not wanted to go with her (She's DEAF. Who wants a deaf prom date?) he tells her a lie, saying he has something else to do that night. He in fact does go to the prom with another girl. He didn't expect to see the deaf girl at them prom figuring she'd be dateless. but she DOES come to the prom, accompanied by her father. She encounters him kissing his date and forlornly confronts him about his deception. He runs away from her, leaving her crying in her father's arms. UGH! How horrible. But at the reunion she again she has an encounter with him and tells him she didn't hold his behavior against him, he was just a kid back then and kids do things like that. I think they share a dance. It was supposed to heartwarming but it was really an excruciating episode. Henry's cruelty was truly awful, and the deaf girl was made out to be like some kind of a saint. I thought the whole thing was just disturbing.
