DL cinema sleuths, help! 80’s actress who looks like Wendie Jo Sperber

I’m racking my brain trying to remember an actress but I can’t remember exactly any film or television show she was on. I know… good luck.

That’s why I’m reaching out to DL!

Here’s what I remember mostly: she resembles Wendie Jo Sperber, almost a dead ringer (but was generally slimmer). She worked mostly in early/mid-80’s. She often played comedy, and seemed to be in a lot of low budget films along the lines of Paul Bartel or Roger Corman (searched all those filmographies to no avail). I thought she was a cast member of FRIDAY’S, but I was wrong. Not SNL either. She was often yelling in her roles or chewing gum (I know… so little to go on). I’m pretty sure she was Latina, but didn’t play typical stereotype characters. She also resembled Julia Louis-Dreyfus a little bit.

I thought I was thinking of Wendy Jo Sperber, but realized that wasn’t her.

Any help appreciated. You’re my only hope DataLounge!

No to all the above BUT Mercedes Ruehl is so close (I thought that was it for a second).

She did more indie stuff like I mentioned Paul Bartel or Roger Corman. Comedies. She might have done some horror comedies. Very physical acting style lots of yelling and screaming. I feel like she played more than one gum-chewing diner waitress.

She was also in an early 80’s sketch comedy tv show that was very obscure and used to air after SNL in like 1983. Very low budget. I think the show was based out of LA. Not Friday’s. Trying to remember the name of THAT show is what started this argument between me and my partner.

I know this is hopeless and my clues are pathetic. But thanks to everyone’s suggestions.

I'm sticking to my Helaine Lembeck submission - she looks the closest to Wendie Jo than any of these replies. And she was loud and obnoxious on Welcome Back Kotter.

by Anonymousreply 32July 6, 2021 10:28 PM

But she wasn't on a sketch comedy late night show. Ever.

by Anonymousreply 33July 6, 2021 10:31 PM

Hey thanks everyone. OP here. I haven’t checked-out it was just that saying no to all these on-point suggestions (mostly) was becoming maddening. Honestly, now I’m confused. So far Rachel Tictoin seems to me to be the closest, but it’s not her. I don’t think. Again, I’m just confused now.

I may be just remembering things foggily (it was 1983), or maybe it was one of these actresses very early on, in something uncredited, or I’m remembering it straight-up wrong.

Or it’s an actress who only appeared in a few things or one thing I happened to see, and there’s almost no trace of her, and my memory of her longer career is mixed in with these other actresses. Ugh. I don’t know.

Thanks so much to everyone. I hope this was fun on some level.

Here’s some more info on that comedy sketch variety show I remember: I simply couldn’t find anything that seemed to resemble it on that Wiki link someone posted. The show was filmed in (I think) LA and had a very low budget. They would film whole sketches outside in an area that looked like Venice Beach with barely any costumes and no sets. Almost always in daytime. There was another cast member who LOOKED LIKE Ed Bagley Jr. but wasn’t him (how’s that for making things worse). This show was aired very late nights after either SNL or Friday’s. It was very low rent, the kind of thing that might air in only a few markets. It maybe aired after early David Letterman, but I don’t think so that would mean it aired m-f.

I’m giving up for now, but if I find her I’ll be sure to check in!!

Thanks!!!

by Anonymousreply 44July 6, 2021 11:08 PM

I think R47 is correct. ALMOST LIVE! began in 1984 and is close enough to 1983. The description of the show fits exactly, but OP simply remembers it as LA when it was actually Seattle. Lots of sketches shot outside in parks and streets in the daytime. There are several Ed Bagley Jr. look-a-likes (close enough) in the cast in the earliest sketches you can find on YouTube. It aired late nights in select markets in its earliest days. And I think the actress he’s remembering is Tracey Conway. And he is confusing her with other actresses on this list.

The key is OP’s description of the sketch comedy show.

by Anonymousreply 59July 6, 2021 11:39 PM

by Anonymousreply 168July 8, 2021 4:27 AM

OP probably thought this would be a good light topic for DL, not realizing that most of us have been obsessed with mid-list character actresses our whole lives.

I also think he's gotten Tracey Conway and Helaine Lembeck mixed up in his mind. Probably saw Lembeck on TV ("Kotter" most likely) and later saw Conway on "Almost Live" and thought they were the same person.

Lucy Webb!

Sketch comedy show - Not Necessarily The News

Horror comedy- Full Moon High

“Prettier” than Wendy

Melanie Chartoff? She started out on that SNL-type show Fridays.

I think this is the obscure comedy sketch show that OP is referring to…starring Lucy Webb.

by Anonymousreply 183July 8, 2021 4:17 PM

I'd never thought of Lucy Webb, I love her. She was also on Not Necessarily the News. No cult movies though, which really narrows down the list of possibilities.

by Anonymousreply 184July 8, 2021 4:47 PM

Is it Wendy Jo Sperber?

by Anonymousreply 185July 8, 2021 5:18 PM

OP here.

SOLVED! R181 got it. And R183 nailed it.

It’s Lucy Webb. The show was LAUGH TRAX.

But what’s weird is how foggy and convoluted my memory of what show she was on was, what she later appeared in, and who she was exactly (or wasn’t).

R59 almost had my partner and I convinced (by way of R44). My partner and I both seemed to agree at first that ALMOST LIVE! was the variety sketch comedy show we’re both remembering. I remembered it as LA, it’s actually Seattle. And as R59 points out there are several Ed Bagley Jr. lookalikes on the show. This would lead to the actress I’m remembering being Tracey Conway, which it could have been. But that is NOT the actress I started this thread about. I might have gotten my memory of Conway confused with Lucy Webb? And, possibly other actresses listed in this thread? Particularly Rachel Tictoin. But the show started in 1984. And Conway just seems too off from who I’m remembering.

But… then as soon as I saw Lucy Webb’s face, I though: “Bam! That’s her. That’s who I’m thinking of!” LUCY WEBB!

Lucy Webb appeared on Not Necessarily the News, which began in 1983 and looks like the show we remember. BUT it was on HBO. I was 13 in 1983 and my family certainly didn’t have HBO. Neither did my partner at that age. Unless NNtN ran on network channels late at night on weekends, I probably never saw it. Unless I saw it years later and remembered it as Almost Live. Just more confusion.

So yes to Lucy Webb, but not exactly to both (of the shows) above. Then R184 came along and got it totally right. It’s indeed Lucy Webb and the show was LAUGH TRAX. My partner and I both agree. THAT is exactly the show we remember.

What’s weird is Lucy Webb plays a small but memorable role in BIG BUSINESSES! A film I’ve seen 100 times and have memorized. How. On. Earth. Could. I. Have. Forgotten. That? I may just be a dingbat.

I also remember Webb appearing in many more things. Her filmography isn’t tiny, but not huge. Again, I still think I’m confusing her with similar actresses over time.

The similarity to Wendy Jo Sperber is because: I had always remembered this actress as one of the leads of the late 70’s film I WANNA HOLD YOUR HAND, a film I saw on TV as a kid and always remembered vividly. I never saw it since, and remembered this mystery actress in Sperber’s place. As soon as I was trying to figure out this actresses identity with my partner I googled IWHYH and right way though, “Wait, that’s not who I’m thinking if.” That’s why I called her a lookalike to Sperber.

And some of you are right, I *did* abandon the thread because it became so overwhelming. I had no idea of the width and breadth of knowledge of such matters on DataLounge! I’m impressed (I just wasn’t prepared for the impact).

Thanks DataLounge! You solved it.

by Anonymousreply 186July 8, 2021 5:44 PM

R186 - thank you for returning back. But next time, don't wait so long to reply. You're forgiven, but let this be a warning. You can't just ghost us after posting a thread about 80's trivia - it's too triggering.

So - what did you win in your argument with your partner? Was there an argument resolved or just satisfaction?

by Anonymousreply 187July 8, 2021 5:51 PM

R187 The whole conversation came up when I was trying to remember the show and actress and yelling him about it. He just remembered show. Neither of us could remember any names or titles. Until now. He did remember Webb when I showed him just now.

by Anonymousreply 188July 8, 2021 5:58 PM

R187 ps. Satisfaction.

by Anonymousreply 189July 8, 2021 5:59 PM

“Yelling him about it.” Is a Freudian typo of there ever was one.

by Anonymousreply 190July 8, 2021 6:00 PM

I can only find one episode of LAUGH TRAX on YouYube, and a few either other bits and pieces. It has a lot of Lucy Webb in it.

I think Not Necessarily the News must have been syndicated in some form, we didn't have cable either yet I became obsessed with Rich Hall's "sniglets" from the show, I know I saw them late at night on weekends.

by Anonymousreply 192July 8, 2021 6:04 PM

R192, it was, just like 'Brothers' from Showtime was also syndicated.

by Anonymousreply 193July 8, 2021 6:21 PM

Jim Staahl must be the Ed Begley Jr. lookalike you mentioned at r44, OP. So glad the mystery has been solved. Ways to go, r181!

OP, what was her role Big Business?

Love that movie too

by Anonymousreply 200July 9, 2021 12:55 AM

She was one of the Jupiter Hollow locals, I think the sister to “country” Bette. Or lived in the same house or was a neighbor. She’s with Bette when she’s saying goodbye in the morning and reveals she isn’t coming back. I think Webb has the line about don’t take the subway. I think she’s in later scenes too when they call Jupiter Hollow from NYC.
