Jeopardy #26 -- Season 38 Continues

The 38th season of the venerable game show is well underway.

Continue your discussion about each day's game here. What did you guess for Final? Did you get the Daily Double? Will Mayim ever get a fashion intervention? Talk about it all here.

by Anonymousreply 600January 4, 2022 1:19 AM

Sorry for not pasting a link in the previous thread, but I only just now created this thread I didn't realize we were so close to finishing off that one.

And wow, we filled up the last thread, #25, is just over five weeks. Is that a record for DL Jeopardy threads?

by Anonymousreply 1October 19, 2021 2:14 PM

Jonathan Fisher is reamy.

by Anonymousreply 2October 19, 2021 2:21 PM

R2, I hope you didn't mean dreamy, because he most definitely is not.

by Anonymousreply 3October 19, 2021 2:31 PM

Best description of Jonathan I've read was one posted here which said he easily could be a stand-in for Fortune Feimster.

by Anonymousreply 4October 19, 2021 3:10 PM

I would have titled the thread “In Matt’s wake”

by Anonymousreply 5October 19, 2021 3:50 PM

We read Longfellow's EVANGELINE out loud when I was in high school and it made me burst into tears. So did THE CREATION by James Weldon Johnson, a black poet also largely forgotten now.

by Anonymousreply 6October 19, 2021 3:51 PM

Just out of curiosity, r6, how old are you?

by Anonymousreply 7October 19, 2021 3:54 PM

Wait until they reveal Jonathan is the long lost son of Roy Clark.

by Anonymousreply 8October 19, 2021 4:24 PM

I am 71 - graduated from high school in 1968.

by Anonymousreply 9October 19, 2021 4:34 PM

So, Jonathan is looking forward to facing Matt again in the next TOC.

by Anonymousreply 10October 19, 2021 4:43 PM

What's the previous thread?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 11October 19, 2021 4:47 PM

“Ooh. Well, done, Matt. That’s correct.”

by Anonymousreply 12October 19, 2021 5:11 PM

That makes sense, r7. I'm the same age and was taught a bit of Longfellow. And Robert Service. Remember him?

by Anonymousreply 13October 19, 2021 7:42 PM

Well, at least Jonathan the giant killer is showing some staying power! Six games is impressive.

by Anonymousreply 14October 19, 2021 7:45 PM

I never studied Longfellow. Graduated 1978.

by Anonymousreply 15October 19, 2021 7:47 PM
Best description of Jonathan I've read was one posted here which said he easily could be a stand-in for Fortune Feimster.

Absolutely!

by Anonymousreply 16October 19, 2021 11:42 PM

Oh. Em. Gee! That's our champ!

Tonight, I have to say I was more thinking of commenting on Wheel Of Fortune: did you notice the winning guy? Are you blind?

All I'm going to say about tonight's Jeopardy game is that I found the "CIA" story among lamest yet.

by Anonymousreply 17October 20, 2021 12:03 AM

Either my brain is fried or there were a lot of hard categories and questions. Jonathan's chat was clearly a plug for his "stage combat" teacher's play, and I kind of liked Mayim's catty response. I did get FJ, because of the movie not the novel.

by Anonymousreply 18October 20, 2021 3:43 AM

Here starts another thread in which I happily post away until I inevitably get locked out because these Jeopardy threads get exclusive at the halfway mark :-(

I'm liking Jonathan a lot but his wagering is too conservative for my tastes. I wish he would go bolder with his wagers - he certaimly has the knowledge base to back it up.

There was a category yesterday called 'Fictional Africa' and I was so expecting Zamunda from Coming to America to be a clue but surprisingly, it wasn't.

I was tickled to get 'rad' tonight from the darkness category since it ended up being a triple stumper.

by Anonymousreply 19October 20, 2021 4:12 AM

Jonathan is a pussy.

by Anonymousreply 20October 20, 2021 4:38 AM

Weird game. Some hard questions. Some easy one too.

I knew rad. I also knew the South Pole. And Richard I.

Likewise, I also knew Final was about the Silence of the Lamb author. I thought his name was Thomas Harris but wasn't sure. Luckily I was right. I've never read the book, but something about the 1981 publication date got me thinking Silence of the Lambs.

by Anonymousreply 21October 20, 2021 5:32 AM

The triple stumper I got was "General Motors", although I know next to nothing about cars...

by Anonymousreply 22October 20, 2021 5:36 AM

For me Jonathan is getting more and more smug with every win.

by Anonymousreply 23October 20, 2021 12:03 PM

I feel he's becoming the guest who's outwearing his welcome.

by Anonymousreply 24October 20, 2021 12:20 PM

Interesting perspective from Arthur Chu. He’s a bit aspie I think, so take all this with a grain of salt. Interesting to see him come out against Mayim.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 25October 20, 2021 12:29 PM

This from the guy who admitted a groundswell of folks who couldn't stand him during his Tournament of Champions run. Between him and Matt Jackson, it would be a case of "Which eye do you want a sharp stick in? "for me.

by Anonymousreply 26October 20, 2021 1:02 PM

R25, I'm embarrassed for Newsweek.

by Anonymousreply 27October 20, 2021 1:16 PM

This is who I see

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 28October 20, 2021 1:33 PM

I’m really hope that Jonathan loses very soon. He’s smug and annoying.

by Anonymousreply 29October 20, 2021 11:36 PM

I knew about Montserrat, which I suppose is something.

by Anonymousreply 30October 20, 2021 11:59 PM

Stunned that she missed Dred Scott.

by Anonymousreply 31October 21, 2021 12:51 AM

I'm hating Jonathan more and more as the days drag on.

by Anonymousreply 32October 21, 2021 1:43 AM

C'mon girl Madison? Really, Madison?

She would have lost anyway but I'm surprised she didn't get that. Whenever Jeopardy tackles the Supreme Court, Dred Scott is one of their go to cases.

I also got Montserrat. I'm surprised that was a triple stumper.

by Anonymousreply 33October 21, 2021 2:33 AM

R25, Newsweek is not your father’s Newsweek any longer. Hasn’t been for some time now.

by Anonymousreply 34October 21, 2021 3:02 AM

R33, Certain responses resurface over and over, Lord of the Flies, Dred Scott, Robert Frost, Jack Kerouac, The Tempest, etc.

by Anonymousreply 35October 21, 2021 3:17 AM

I assumed Dred Scott was the answer to Final the moment they announced the category. Not a lot of 19th Century Supreme Court decisions that are still going to be known in 2021, but Dred Scott is one of them.

I also knew Montserrat.

Yes, show does seem to like Lord of the Flies, Jack Kerouac, Robert Frost and The Tempest.

by Anonymousreply 36October 21, 2021 9:43 AM

My first thought was Plessey.

by Anonymousreply 37October 21, 2021 11:43 AM

Damn. Erin looked like she was going to come through — and then she faltered.

by Anonymousreply 38October 21, 2021 11:57 PM

Final was easy. The only one I got they didn't was Reye's Syndrome and aspirin, and that from watching All My Children many years ago when they had a subplot about it.

Any fans of the WOF fireman?

by Anonymousreply 39October 22, 2021 12:01 AM

I knew Erin was gonna lose when she only bet a $1,000 on her daily double. You gotta put up more than that to beat an eight-time champion baby!

by Anonymousreply 40October 22, 2021 2:40 AM

Yes, Erin had to up her Daily Double game! I got "Richard Wright", but would never have guessed aspirin... Mayim is like a seasoned pro already, and seems to be enjoying herself. I just got a speeding ticket, so was not amused by her "You can do more than 80!" You can -- and you'll pay for it.

by Anonymousreply 41October 22, 2021 3:08 AM

Am I the only one who wanted me some Jack yesterday?

by Anonymousreply 42October 22, 2021 5:10 AM

Good game. Could have gone any way down to the very end. Erin could have won if she'd been a little braver on her Daily Doubles. $1,000 bets is not the way you win a game.

I knew aspirin instantly.

Final was super easy.

Mayim seems very comfortable in her role as host now. But won't someone please do a FASHION INTERVENTION! Don't they have any gay men on staff who can take her aside and talk to her! Better yet, take her to Nordstrom or Bloomingdales to buy some outfits. Both department stores are at Century City, less than 5 miles from the Sony Pictures studios.

by Anonymousreply 43October 22, 2021 6:20 AM

It looked like Lea might have been the new champion until she blew the Hamilton question on the DD.

First game that Jonathan missed all three DDs.

On a personal note, bouncer Rudy can rough me up every night of the week.

by Anonymousreply 44October 23, 2021 12:01 AM

I suppose I should be ashamed of myself for missing final, but I'm really not. My guess was Lady Marmalade (AKA voulez-vous coucher avec moi?). Then again, I did get serenade, Tunisia, and oyster.

So, our champ is into schtupping babes, eh? If you saw it Wheel of Fortune, it makes a great doubleheader with the guy tonight there.

by Anonymousreply 45October 23, 2021 12:01 AM

r45, "Cyrano" reminded me of Steve Martin's "Roxanne," which reminded me of the song by the Police.

I really wanted Rudy to win. Wouldn't have minded looking at him for 38 episodes.

by Anonymousreply 46October 23, 2021 2:56 AM

That’s what I thought as well, R45.

by Anonymousreply 47October 23, 2021 3:10 AM

There were a lot of triple stumpers tonight. Lea is beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 48October 23, 2021 3:11 AM

Lea's face fell as soon as she read that HAMILTON question. That was the kiss of death for her.

I guessed LADY MARMALADE for FJ too.

by Anonymousreply 49October 23, 2021 3:23 AM

the first round of Jeopardy tonight was fun and tight but things got dull in the second round

Rudy is attractive and I'm happy to say having looked at his twitter and instagram he seems like a decent guy. Shame he fell apart

by Anonymousreply 50October 23, 2021 9:23 AM

Was really rooting for Lea to win. She came on so strong. But then she missed the Hamilton question for Daily Double (which I would also have missed) and lost her mojo.

Had no idea on Final. Didn't even attempt a guess. I sort of figured it was some Rolling Stones song since they talked about prostitutes in several of their 1970s songs.

by Anonymousreply 51October 23, 2021 9:29 AM

R50, Any shirtless pics? Asking for a friend.

by Anonymousreply 52October 23, 2021 11:42 AM

I guessed Walk on the Wild Side for FJ. Way off!

by Anonymousreply 53October 23, 2021 11:55 AM

Naturally, I knew the correct Hamilton response.

by Anonymousreply 54October 23, 2021 12:00 PM

Rudy really cleaned up for the show, much shaggier on his Instagram page.

by Anonymousreply 55October 23, 2021 12:27 PM

I guessed "Lady In Red" for FJ.

Jonathan is wearing out his welcome.

by Anonymousreply 56October 23, 2021 2:39 PM

I can’t believe I missed Roxanne, but I thought of the 70s as middle and high school and the Police were college.

by Anonymousreply 57October 23, 2021 5:22 PM

The only reason I knew the Police were around in the 1970s is because I had a friend who was a music critic in Seattle. He asked me if I wanted to see them and meet them while he interviewed them, but I passed on the opportunity. Another punk band. Ho-fucking-hum. I didn't discover them on my own until the release of Synchronicity in 1983, on which I played side 2 over and over.

r46

by Anonymousreply 58October 23, 2021 6:03 PM

yeah I missed "Roxanne" too and thought of "Lady Marmalade" instead

by Anonymousreply 59October 23, 2021 6:27 PM

Will someone please knock this smug, arrogant fucker off this damn show?? I can’t stand that little head bobble that he does when he gives his answers.

by Anonymousreply 60October 25, 2021 11:59 PM

Could Mayim have looked much frumpier?

Jonathan now = Matt 2.0

I got Final, but not right away.

by Anonymousreply 61October 26, 2021 12:00 AM

Hilary has the strangest boobs I have ever seen. Gives a visual to go with the side boob expression.

by Anonymousreply 62October 26, 2021 2:04 AM

Hopefully, Hilary will use some of her $2,000 to purchase a decent support bra.

Her breasts looked like a couple of oranges became loose in the bag on the drive home from grocery shopping.

by Anonymousreply 63October 26, 2021 3:03 AM

Yes, Jonathan is wearing out his welcome.

Nice to see a comparative game in the first half.

Had no idea on Final.

by Anonymousreply 64October 26, 2021 5:06 AM

1 of the easiest finals in ages I thought. I instantly though of that old British lady who always hangs around apes

by Anonymousreply 65October 26, 2021 6:40 AM

How many here will be lining up to see his girlfriend's feminist take on The Winter's Tale?

by Anonymousreply 66October 26, 2021 12:00 PM

R66, I'd prefer to see a photo of the "girlfriend".

by Anonymousreply 67October 26, 2021 12:21 PM

R65, Camilla?

by Anonymousreply 68October 26, 2021 12:22 PM

Previously, he deliberately referred to someone from an episode earlier in his life as a "partner" in the vague way that some guys do (ahem).

When he mentioned funding the production, I got an image from my childhood when folks sometimes would burn piles of rakes leaves.

by Anonymousreply 69October 26, 2021 12:28 PM

But he subsequently mentioned a "girlfriend."

by Anonymousreply 70October 26, 2021 1:30 PM

R70, She could be trans.

by Anonymousreply 71October 26, 2021 1:35 PM

I suppose Jonathan will be playing Autolycus?

by Anonymousreply 72October 26, 2021 2:53 PM

Or, he could be bisexual, though I'm left wondering if the feminist is trans as well?

by Anonymousreply 73October 26, 2021 2:54 PM

He wants to use his winnings to mount a production of his female "partner's" version of THE WINTER'S TALE.

by Anonymousreply 74October 26, 2021 5:45 PM

I'll bet he's a lousy actor.

by Anonymousreply 75October 26, 2021 5:52 PM
She could be trans.

For that matter, so could "Jonathan"...

by Anonymousreply 76October 26, 2021 5:59 PM

Have you noticed that Mayim says “a Daily Double” in Double Jeopardy? Alex used to say “the Daily Double” even though there are two. Bold move.

by Anonymousreply 77October 26, 2021 6:24 PM

At lunch today, my mom mentioned (of Mayim), "That woman can afford to buy decent clothes!"

by Anonymousreply 78October 26, 2021 6:31 PM

She’s an observant Jew and as such dresses modestly. You never see her arms. But yes, still kind of tasteless and tacky. It’s as if she is still playing Amy Farrah Fowler.

by Anonymousreply 79October 26, 2021 6:45 PM

*** SPOILER ALERT ***

Our long national nightmare is over!

by Anonymousreply 80October 26, 2021 9:41 PM

I wish you wouldn't do that!!!

by Anonymousreply 81October 26, 2021 9:49 PM

R80, Woo-hoo!

by Anonymousreply 82October 26, 2021 10:42 PM

There’s really only one event that could require a spoiler alert.

by Anonymousreply 83October 26, 2021 11:00 PM

Is Mandela cute? Why, yes... yes he is! I truly appreciate the way that he faced up to his unusual named head on. (unlike the guy who is his own twin)

The competitiveness of tonight is exactly what we are supposed to see, rather than just steamroll after steamroll. Guessed final correctly, as well as making a note of the fact that I knew the answer muffler which they didn't.

by Anonymousreply 84October 27, 2021 12:04 AM

Yet another Robert Frost shout out.

by Anonymousreply 85October 27, 2021 12:31 AM

Pre-emptied in NYC market

by Anonymousreply 86October 27, 2021 2:33 AM

by Anonymousreply 87October 27, 2021 2:36 AM

Mandela was very cute and smart. I like how he rebounded after that DD miss. Too bad he couldn't pull off a win but I'm happy for Nancy.

by Anonymousreply 88October 27, 2021 2:40 AM

Had to miss tonight’s episode, but I’ll find it on YouTube. WJLA in DC ran an ad today that teased a loss by the smug, arrogant jackass.

Yay!!

He can go bobble his head somewhere else.

by Anonymousreply 89October 27, 2021 3:28 AM

My first thought was Thornton Wilder, but I switched to O'Neill even though I didn't think he died in Boston. Mandela will probably be in the doldrums for a few days...

by Anonymousreply 90October 27, 2021 4:22 AM
Will Mayim ever get a fashion intervention?

OP, she had an intervention on “What Not To Wear” years ago. It clearly didn’t take.

by Anonymousreply 91October 27, 2021 4:37 AM

Would y'all prefer that she's introduced wearing a Bob Mackie original?

She looks fine.

by Anonymousreply 92October 27, 2021 5:24 AM

"Pre-emptied in NYC market"

Oh, dear.

by Anonymousreply 93October 27, 2021 5:27 AM

For the final I got Frost but had no clue about O'Neill.

Glad Jonathan is gone

Did anyone see Matt's bitchy tweet the other day? lol

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 94October 27, 2021 6:41 AM

Interesting that a man who looks like a lesbian is now being replaced by a woman who looks like a lesbian.

Jonathan certainly proved worthy with 11 games under his belt, but he also wore out his welcome. Bravo to Nancy for being a giant killer.

Had no idea on Final whatsoever.

by Anonymousreply 95October 27, 2021 7:26 AM

I think Mayim looks fine too R92. Her wardrobe suits her personality as a brainy, quirky, Orthodox Jewish woman. If she gets the permanent gig, maybe the producers will up her fashion game, but I don't think she looks bad at all.

by Anonymousreply 96October 27, 2021 9:06 AM

In addition to her clothes that go from acceptable to unfortunate, she definitely needs a hair stylist!

by Anonymousreply 97October 27, 2021 12:17 PM

I don’t even notice Mayim’s clothes, or really anything about her other than the hosting. With her, I can focus on the game, that’s why I think she’s a good host.

by Anonymousreply 98October 27, 2021 12:32 PM

I initially thought Wilder too for FJ. But couldn't come up with 4 Pulitzer-worthy plays in his canon. Only two.

PS In New York, an episode pre-empted get a showing in the middle of the night. If you're DVR is set to record all first-run Jeopardy shows, it will find it later in the evening.

by Anonymousreply 99October 27, 2021 1:36 PM

Did anyone else wonder if Jennifer wasn’t always Jennifer?

by Anonymousreply 100October 28, 2021 12:03 AM

Tyler has gay voice! Tyler has gay voice! He's also very cute.

I was suspecting that about Nancy, R100.

Had no clue about final, but as one of the actresses was Russian, I wildly guessed the correct answer! I did know: Shattered, Ardennes, Malayasia, and the Faroes.

by Anonymousreply 101October 28, 2021 12:06 AM

When Nancy was first introduced yesterday, I wasn't sure if they were going to say a man or a woman's name until it was announced.

I'm glad gay Tyler won. He seems really sweet.

FJ was easy for me because I knew Garbo played Anna at least once, Leigh played her in the '40s, and someone else did relatively recently. Having said that, the only adaptation of the novel (which I love) that I've seen is the Masterpiece Theater miniseries with Nicola Pagett.

I know a lot of viewers have issues with Mayim's clothes - and I was one of the posters who'd made fun of some outfits in the past - but I've gotten used to it to the point that I'm now in agreement with R96 & R98.

by Anonymousreply 102October 28, 2021 12:42 AM

Mayim’s clothing selection goes largely unnoticed by me. I looked at what she was wearing tonight, and while it looked somewhat dowdy, it was also completely inoffensive.

Tyler is cute.

by Anonymousreply 103October 28, 2021 1:09 AM

I knew FJ immediately, any true movie fan should have, as well.

by Anonymousreply 104October 28, 2021 2:35 AM

Really really surprised that two of them guessed Elizabeth Bennett. Garbo in that role would have been ludicrous. Maybe Tyler isn't gay after all.

by Anonymousreply 105October 28, 2021 3:00 AM

Haha good point R105. I guessed Elizabeth Bennett because of Keira Knightley but I should have known that was wrong because of the Russian actress in the clue.

by Anonymousreply 106October 28, 2021 3:09 AM

Nancy made a decent comeback, but that Russia Daily Double killed her. There were a lot of triple stumpers and odd answers. I would love to see Garbo as an angst-ridden, adulterous Elizabeth Bennett who throws herself in front of the family's horse and carriage.

by Anonymousreply 107October 28, 2021 3:25 AM

I want to see those Russian Elizabeth Bennetts.

by Anonymousreply 108October 28, 2021 4:42 AM
I would love to see Garbo as an angst-ridden, adulterous Elizabeth Bennett who throws herself in front of the family's horse and carriage.

LOL!! Too funny! Thanks for the laugh.

I liked Tyler. Glad we'll be able to get to know him.

I'm a movie buff, but I had no idea on Final. Guess I should turn in my gay card to r104 and r015.

by Anonymousreply 109October 28, 2021 7:10 AM

I have no idea who Elizabeth Bennett might be? Then again, I'm not a real film buff. As for turning in one's gay card, I've been deluged with requests to do so over the years whenever I've mentioned that I can't stand the film Wizard of Oz (except for the adorbs flying monkeys).

by Anonymousreply 110October 28, 2021 10:37 AM

You're forgiven, r110. Perhaps you're young and Garbo is but a distant specter to you. As for Mr. C, you needn't be a film buff to know Ms. Bennett. Only a reader of the classics.

by Anonymousreply 111October 28, 2021 11:39 AM

I do read the classics, but I think I would recall a scene of a woman committing suicide under the horse and carriage like that? Guess I missed whatever book it came from? Then again, I've never read, nor seen a film of, Anna Karenina either.

by Anonymousreply 112October 28, 2021 11:43 AM

What made FJ so easy is that there's only one character that both Greta Garbo and Vivien Leigh portrayed on film.

by Anonymousreply 113October 28, 2021 11:52 AM

I got FJ immediately because a few years ago I tried watching the Keira Knightley version of Anna Karenina. I lasted about 20 minutes.

by Anonymousreply 114October 28, 2021 1:41 PM

never watched it or wheel of fortune more than once, total crap. geesh!!!

by Anonymousreply 115October 28, 2021 1:55 PM

Tyler mentioned his "now fiance".

by Anonymousreply 116October 28, 2021 10:03 PM

Now you know none of the contestants tonight are dataloungers when all three failed to identify our beloved DL fave Glenn Close in what was a slam dunk clue.

Tyler was good tonight. It would be hilarious if he went on another long run a la Matt and Jonathan.

My geography sucks. There was no way I was getting FJ.

by Anonymousreply 117October 29, 2021 2:42 AM

I had no idea of Glenn Close.

by Anonymousreply 118October 29, 2021 3:01 AM

That's gotta hurt. Plus she was a lousy $600 answer.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 119October 29, 2021 3:54 AM

Shame for G. I don’t believe I’ve ever been the answer to a clue that wasn’t solved immediately.

by Anonymousreply 120October 29, 2021 3:58 AM

I believe, dear M, that you were either the $400 or the $200 question tonight.

by Anonymousreply 121October 29, 2021 4:29 AM

Good game. Nice seeing a competitive game.

I knew Glenn Close.

Also immediately knew Santiago for Final.

by Anonymousreply 122October 29, 2021 7:03 AM

Hey Johnny Gilbert! You are annoying!

by Anonymousreply 123October 29, 2021 11:15 AM

I guessed Wellington as well.

by Anonymousreply 124October 29, 2021 12:07 PM

Totally baffled by FJ. For those who knew it immediately . . . how?

There was a time that "now fiance" could mean only one thing. Now it keeps the mystery of his sexuality alive.

by Anonymousreply 125October 29, 2021 12:10 PM

Do guys refer to their same-sex intended as "fiancé"? Unlikely.

by Anonymousreply 126October 29, 2021 1:55 PM
Totally baffled by FJ. For those who knew it immediately . . . how?

NZ is not 7,000 miles from Sydney (I flew from Sydney to NZ). Next thing you’d hit is lower South America. Only one capital near the Pacific. Lima too far North.

by Anonymousreply 127October 29, 2021 2:07 PM
NZ is not 7,000 miles from Sydney (I flew from Sydney to NZ). Next thing you’d hit is lower South America. Only one capital near the Pacific. Lima too far North.

Exactly. I'm good at geography (not Matt Amodio good, but I'm decent) and know that Santiago is the capital of Chili. And Santiago is on the Pacific side of South America. Lima would be too far north as r127 points out. So, easy for me to figure it out from there.

by Anonymousreply 128October 29, 2021 2:56 PM

Why not, r126?

by Anonymousreply 129October 29, 2021 4:41 PM

When he mentioned his fiancé, pearls fell out of his mouth.

by Anonymousreply 130October 29, 2021 4:46 PM

Tyler wrote a Classics thesis at Columbia: "Questioning the Category of Roman Love Elegy: Ovid’s Tristia IV as a “Res Getae” and the Power of Canon Formation". If there's an "Ovid's Tristia" category next week, look out!

by Anonymousreply 131October 29, 2021 5:08 PM

What’s your favorite category of Roman love elegy? Mine is where the man goes up into the man.

by Anonymousreply 132October 29, 2021 5:20 PM

Perhaps gay males do say fiancé, though I've never heard of such. It's a bit twee/archaic among straights to me, so I figured by the time same sex marriage arrived it was a bit late to start using it.

I'm assuming he's the whippersnapper version of a metrosexual.

by Anonymousreply 133October 29, 2021 6:17 PM

Anyone who would write the thesis mentioned above would probably be constipated enough to use fiancé to describe a man.

by Anonymousreply 134October 29, 2021 7:58 PM

The phrasing certainly was unusual and stood out. Perhaps he just wasn't ready to come out on national TV, but didn't want to revert to changing pronouns. Fiancé works for a situation like that.

by Anonymousreply 135October 29, 2021 8:07 PM

His fiancée, Meghan, is on his Twitter.

Nice competitive game to end the week and both female opponents were charming.

My late WW II USMC father would be disappointed that I blanked on FJ.

by Anonymousreply 137October 29, 2021 10:55 PM

I would've written the title as "From the Halls of Montezuma" not recalling the actual name.

by Anonymousreply 138October 29, 2021 11:59 PM

I knew the line with "shores of Tripoli" but had zero idea about the title of that song. Tyler is pretty impressive.

by Anonymousreply 139October 30, 2021 4:46 AM

I thought it was the Navy Hymn. I didn’t realize we had marines back then.

by Anonymousreply 140October 30, 2021 5:08 AM

Like r139, I knew the clue was referring to "the shores of Tripoli," but had no idea what the song title was. In fact, I don't think I've ever heard of the name "The Marine Hymn" before. Are there corresponding Navy Hymns, Army Hymns, etc?

Good game tonight. Nice when they are competitive.

by Anonymousreply 141October 30, 2021 8:28 AM

Surprised myself by knowing FJ. I'm no expert on military matters.

by Anonymousreply 142October 30, 2021 12:39 PM

Each branch has a hymn, but the “service song” is more famous. The marines’ service song is their hymn. Isn’t that efficient?

Army: “The Army Goes Rolling Along”. Based on Sousa’s “Over hill, over dale . . .”

Navy: “Anchors Aweigh”

Marines: “The Marines’ Hymn” “From the halls of Montezuma

Air Force: “U.S. Air Force” (what a title). “ Off we go, into the wild blue yonder . . .”

Coast Guard: “Semper Paratus” (always ready)

Please enjoy this patriotic medley

by Anonymousreply 143October 30, 2021 10:03 PM

Thanks, r143. Would be interesting to hear how each of those was written and adopted.

Also would like to hear the Army soldier who says, "so it's hi! hi! hee!"

by Anonymousreply 144October 30, 2021 11:23 PM

Thought I'd see more speculation about a possible trans contestant this last week. She was at the end podium, on the right of course, since she's not a champion. I listened to this episode as I fell asleep and kept opening my eyes when she was called on because she had total trans voice. Can't remember exactly what night it was on, but I think I'm thinking of Jennifer at the link.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 145October 31, 2021 3:12 AM

I guessed Montezuma’s Revenge.

by Anonymousreply 146October 31, 2021 4:02 AM

Yes. It was Jennifer. See r100.

by Anonymousreply 147October 31, 2021 5:42 AM

And perhaps Nancy.

by Anonymousreply 148October 31, 2021 5:43 AM

Was chatting with a gay woman a few years ago, who told me that a kid (probably a teen) had asked her "Are you trans?" That lady was perhaps slightly androgynous, but not so much that I'd really think that a possibility. Guess there's a bit of a "gray area" with mannish (gay) women?

Regarding sexuality and Jeopardy, our champion [italic]really[/italic] seems gay to me. Then again, I'm reminded of a writer who admitted that when a mutual friend told his future wife he was interested, her response was surprise as she'd written him off as gay.

by Anonymousreply 149October 31, 2021 3:03 PM

OK, so... I had no idea of Final, and admittedly blurted "Dickens!" rather than Lewis Carroll. Still, I did know Suez Canal, Mackinac Bridge, and Better Business Bureau.

Tyler's in-laws must have wondered about the gal marrying her seemingly gay pal?

by Anonymousreply 150November 2, 2021 12:04 AM

Good game tonight.

I knew Better Business Bureau.

I said LEM for Final, short for Lunar Excursion Module.

by Anonymousreply 151November 2, 2021 6:56 AM

Did he say they've been together for 7 years before tying the knot?

by Anonymousreply 152November 2, 2021 11:31 AM

Well... I guessed Copernicus wrong for final, but did know Winfield Scott was in the Mexican War, along with serpentine, Aden, and the Heidi Chronicles.

Let's see what tomorrow brings!

by Anonymousreply 153November 3, 2021 12:51 AM

Despite looking like he escaped from a 1968 college campus, I found Chuck quite sexy.

Also guessed Copernicus for FJ, but I knew that was too easy.

by Anonymousreply 154November 3, 2021 1:12 AM

Can't believe they blanked on all the theater questions!

by Anonymousreply 155November 3, 2021 1:27 AM

I thought Chuck was sexy too. He looks like someone who takes charge in the bedroom.

by Anonymousreply 156November 3, 2021 2:35 AM

Chuck had a sexy voice. I struck out with Copernicus too, and missed Aleppo, but ran the theater category from Heidi Chronicles to Mister Roberts. Tyler, Jonathan, and Matt all heading for the Tournament of Champions.

by Anonymousreply 157November 3, 2021 3:50 AM

Copernicus was dead. I went with Tycho Brahe. Kepler was his student, but the master was not a Copernican, so an ill-informed guess. But better than Copernicus.

by Anonymousreply 158November 3, 2021 4:55 AM

Good game tonight. I liked Chuck. If he'd gotten serpentine (which I didn't), he might have given Tyler some serious competition.

I'm not especially a theater queen, but I knew all the theater questions. None of those answers was particularity obscure. I'm really surprised they didn't get at least a couple like the Heidi Chronicles or the Miracle Worker.

I also guessed Copernicus for Final.

by Anonymousreply 159November 3, 2021 7:12 AM

I think they did get The Miracle Worker.

by Anonymousreply 160November 3, 2021 7:23 AM

Serpentine was hard. I didn't know it's a mineral.

by Anonymousreply 161November 3, 2021 8:00 AM

Heidi Chronicles has not had much of a shelf life after its initial run (a recent revival flopped badly). But if they had brushed up on their Pulitzer winners, they might have got it right.

by Anonymousreply 162November 3, 2021 11:59 AM

R161: I don't recall hearing of serpentine as a mineral, but managed to get it as a guess based on the wording of the clue.

by Anonymousreply 163November 3, 2021 12:16 PM

I thought serpentine was a shape!

by Anonymousreply 164November 3, 2021 10:35 PM

How did only one person — the new champ — get FJ correct? It seemed so incredibly easy. “Painting.” “Oslo.” “Madman.” Duh. “The Scream.”

by Anonymousreply 165November 3, 2021 11:59 PM

The winner with the weirdly-shaped head will last one more episode.

by Anonymousreply 166November 4, 2021 12:04 AM

I think the term serpentine in most cases does refer to a shape, such as a very meandering river.

The betrothed Tyler seemed to ping louder with each passing episode to me. Good luck to the happy couple!

The new champ struck me as someone who comes up with just the right word on every occasion, rather than in the middle of the night after getting home.

I knew Sacco and Vanzetti, guessing Henry V wildly, blindly. Settled on Starry Night for final. Saw The Scream a few years back, which was actually smaller than I'd expected.

by Anonymousreply 167November 4, 2021 12:04 AM

R165, Agreed, I knew it was The Scream before she finished reading the clue. The new champ seems personality challenged and I also see him as a one day wonder.

by Anonymousreply 168November 4, 2021 12:56 AM

I guessed the same wrong answer that Tyler did.

by Anonymousreply 169November 4, 2021 2:16 AM

Am I the only one who found new-champ Tony kind of hot? Exciting back and forth game. Mayim's jacket could only have been designed by a madman.

by Anonymousreply 170November 4, 2021 3:14 AM

I thought he was hot too R170 - sexy in a distinguished older guy kind of way. I don't foresee another victory though.

by Anonymousreply 171November 4, 2021 3:24 AM

In other exciting news, I'm pretty sure Johnny Gilbert actually used the word "dollars" rather than "dollar"when announcing the champ's total earnings before the start of the game, even though the amounted ended in 1. Is it possible that one of the producers finally spoke with him about this and insisted that he use the correct plural form, rather than the singular? Or did Johnny just slip because he's getting so old?

by Anonymousreply 172November 4, 2021 3:41 AM

Just as they stopped referring to “the daily double,” old, idiosyncratic errors are being mercilessly cut.

by Anonymousreply 173November 4, 2021 4:50 AM

Great game tonight. Unexpected win for Tony.

I was rooting for Julian. Liked him, but he lost his mojo after missing those back to back Daily Doubles. That's a shame.

I also knew Final was The Scream before Mayim even finished reading it.

As usual, I also agree that Mayim's wardrobe still sucks. Are there no mirrors in that studio? Can't someone show her how these outfits look on TV?

by Anonymousreply 174November 4, 2021 6:13 AM

You all may have already discussed this, but when a contestant correctly answers a people question (who is?) with only a last name, Mayim NEVER says/repeats with the FULL NAME. Drives me crazy. Tonight I knew the answer (Al Capone). But there are others I'm not sure of and she does not enlighten the audience by giving the full name. Even some of the worst contendees for that job knew that's how you handle those responses.

by Anonymousreply 175November 4, 2021 6:34 AM
Just as they stopped referring to “the daily double,” old, idiosyncratic errors are being mercilessly cut.

Where's the error in "the daily double?" Do you mean because there are actually three of them in each game, so if anything it should be "a daily double?"

by Anonymousreply 176November 4, 2021 2:46 PM

I hope the new champion doesn't have tickets for an ABBA concert.

by Anonymousreply 177November 4, 2021 6:12 PM

What an excellent game tonight, very suspenseful.

Surprised Cindy did not have the confidence to bet more in FJ, she was counting on having the only correct response.

Like Tony, I guessed Indonesia.

by Anonymousreply 178November 4, 2021 11:29 PM

Told you weird-shaped head guy would be gone.

by Anonymousreply 179November 4, 2021 11:51 PM

I was fairly certain that at least one of them would incorrectly guess Indonesia. The answer was so obvious to me right away that I was wondering how many of them would screw it up; please bear in mind that I miss ones that you guys often say is obvious to you.

Was definitely rooting for Cindy, but it was such an example of a "normal" game after months of runaways that I'm fine with Sri.

by Anonymousreply 180November 5, 2021 12:03 AM

It is now “the Daily Double” in Jeopardy and “a Daily Double” in Double Jeopardy. At long last.

by Anonymousreply 181November 5, 2021 12:59 AM

I had Indonesia. In fact, I’m not certain where Suriname is.

by Anonymousreply 182November 5, 2021 1:01 AM

It is in South America, formerly Dutch Guyana.

by Anonymousreply 183November 5, 2021 1:03 AM

Good game.

I got FJ wrong - and I blanked on The Scream yesterday. And then I wanted to kick myself for not coming up with either one.

It took me until today to remember who Tony reminded me of - actor Dan Butler (who played Bulldog on Frasier).

by Anonymousreply 184November 5, 2021 1:04 AM

Interesting game tonight. Curious wager from Cindy. I'm surprised that all three were stumped by Ben E. King's Stand by Me.

by Anonymousreply 185November 5, 2021 2:34 AM
It is now “the Daily Double” in Jeopardy and “a Daily Double” in Double Jeopardy. At long last.

I guess it could be argued that "THE Daily Double" is still wrong in Jeopardy, because there are three per game per day -- one in Jeopardy, two in Double Jeopardy.

I'm just glad that JG has apparently stopped saying "____ hundred and one DOLLAR." Seriously, do we think someone finally corrected him after all this time? Or did he just "slip up" the other day and say it correctly after saying it incorrectly all these years?

by Anonymousreply 186November 5, 2021 2:50 AM

I didn't know Ben E. King.

by Anonymousreply 187November 5, 2021 2:53 AM

Cindy was smart - too bad she fell behind.

by Anonymousreply 188November 5, 2021 3:02 AM

I must have heard that hit recording of "Stand by Me" at least 100 times in my life, but I had no idea who the singer was.

by Anonymousreply 189November 5, 2021 3:06 AM

R189, I thought it was Sam Cooke.

by Anonymousreply 190November 5, 2021 3:10 AM

R190, funny you mention that, because if I did have to guess who the singer was, I would have said Sam Cooke.

by Anonymousreply 191November 5, 2021 3:12 AM

R188, The opponent next to you has as much money as you do and you only wager a few hundred dollars in FJ???

by Anonymousreply 192November 5, 2021 3:13 AM

Fantastic game tonight!

I really liked Cindy. Also like Sri.

And amazingly, I liked Mayim's outfit tonight.

I said Guyana for Final. I don't think I've ever heard the name Suriname before.

by Anonymousreply 193November 5, 2021 3:19 AM

Sam Cooke, too, R190.

by Anonymousreply 194November 5, 2021 3:27 AM

I guessed Suriname, but misspelled it. Lots of hard questions for me, but I enjoyed Sri's determined come from behind win.

by Anonymousreply 195November 5, 2021 3:49 AM

I knew they were going to penalize Sri and Tony for not responding correctly to the verb category.

by Anonymousreply 196November 5, 2021 4:11 AM

But since it WAS a verb category, I'm a little surprised that the judges didn't rule out their answers immediately.

Also, it seems to me that sometimes answers are ruled out for mispronunciation, and other times not. Does anyone else have the same impression? I guess it can be a fine line when it comes to that.

by Anonymousreply 197November 5, 2021 1:02 PM

There were a couple of times when I couldn't understand what Sri said......

I said Guyana, too, I couldn't remember the other name!

by Anonymousreply 198November 5, 2021 2:12 PM
There were a couple of times when I couldn't understand what Sri said......

Same here, and I think he almost was ruled against for one or two answers because of that.

by Anonymousreply 199November 5, 2021 2:19 PM

R199, He initially said antipasta and then corrected it with antipasto.

by Anonymousreply 200November 5, 2021 3:25 PM

R200, yes, I noticed that, but I think there were one or two other answers where his diction was so unclear that there was a pause before Mayim said "yes" or "correct."

by Anonymousreply 201November 5, 2021 3:29 PM

During the first segment of the game, his pronunciations were definitely off/hard to understand several times. Mayim was pausing, waiting for word in her earpiece from the judges.

Likely during the first break, someone told him to be sure to enunciate better.

by Anonymousreply 202November 5, 2021 3:37 PM

Bye Sri.

Today’s answer to FJ seemed pretty obvious. GI Joe made perfect sense. “Ken” and “Jungle Jim” (?) did not.

by Anonymousreply 203November 5, 2021 11:59 PM

For those who say that we complain about Mayim's clothes, that apple green blouse should have been incinerated long ago! Sri was looking extra preppy as though he were off to an LL Bean catalog shoot once the episode was wrapped!

Guessed final correctly, although 1964 sounded a bit early to me. Ones that I knew that they didn't: Strait of Dover, Strait of Gibraltar, Rose for Emily, and White Oleander.

Though she didn't mention it - Ken starts Monday?

by Anonymousreply 204November 6, 2021 12:00 AM

I like new champ Kate, she reminds me of Streisand.

Jeff's open disgust at blowing that DD made me chuckle.

Knew FJ immediately, too easy.

by Anonymousreply 205November 6, 2021 12:31 AM

I'm glad Kate won. She was smart, fun and had personality. Hope she can string together some wins. We need some more female champs this season.

by Anonymousreply 206November 6, 2021 2:32 AM

Another great game. I really like it when two contestants's scores are close as they go into final. I liked both Jeff and Kate.

I assumed Final was G.I. Joe but unlike r204, I thought that 1964 seemed a few years too late for his introduction.

From everything I've read, Ken starts hosting on Monday.

by Anonymousreply 207November 6, 2021 8:45 AM

According to Google . . .

"G. I. Joe, line of military-themed dolls and action figures created in 1964 by Hasbro, a Rhode Island-based toy company."

by Anonymousreply 208November 6, 2021 11:09 AM

Was Jungle Jim ever a doll? Or did he just make that up?

by Anonymousreply 209November 6, 2021 12:10 PM

He made that up. It’s Jungle Gym, not even “Jim” (which is what I think he wrote).

by Anonymousreply 210November 6, 2021 12:46 PM

Goodbye, Sri!

I like Kate - but her nose is certainly......uh.....prominent.... She seems to be a nose with eyes like Adrien Brody.

I will miss Mayim next week.

by Anonymousreply 211November 6, 2021 3:17 PM

JUNGLE JIM was a 50s TV series that starred an aging Johnny Weissmuller. There may have been some series related toys, but I have never seen any.

by Anonymousreply 212November 7, 2021 3:25 AM

OMG! You're right. Had totally forgot that JJ!!

by Anonymousreply 213November 7, 2021 12:38 PM

Maybe they can get Aaron Rogers back to host now that he has some down time.

by Anonymousreply 214November 7, 2021 5:28 PM

I'd rather look at Aaron Rodgers than Ken Jennings.

by Anonymousreply 215November 7, 2021 7:48 PM

Is this the Curse of the Jeopardy Host Wannabes? First Mike, then Aaron. Will Mayim be caught shoplifting at Marshalls?

by Anonymousreply 216November 7, 2021 10:33 PM

If Aaron Rogers comes back, I'll be snoozing from 7 to 7:30. His low energy hosting put me to sleep. Bill Whitaker was worse.

by Anonymousreply 217November 7, 2021 10:34 PM

Mayim at Marshalls? I was thinking Dress Barn.

by Anonymousreply 218November 8, 2021 12:24 AM
Is this the Curse of the Jeopardy Host Wannabes? First Mike, then Aaron. Will Mayim be caught shoplifting at Marshalls?

She's already been a target because of those stupid things she said about natural birth vs. C-sections. Certainly not the level of the Mike Reynolds or Aaron Rodgers scandals, but still.

by Anonymousreply 219November 8, 2021 12:42 AM

Alex croaked a year ago. Sigh.

by Anonymousreply 220November 8, 2021 4:57 PM

Plus she shills for those magic pills that are supposed to improve memory. etc. which definitely do not do that.
Certainly not the level of the Mike Reynolds or Aaron Rodgers scandals, but still.

This just shows how forgettable Mike was. His last name is RICHARDS.

by Anonymousreply 222November 8, 2021 5:01 PM

New champ reminds me a bit of John Waters... and Kukla. Was "Stella!" a samesex shoutout? Former champ's interview story was one of the more convoluted we've had.

Missed final, but was truly surprised no one could come up with Mount Everest? Had no idea Tiffany was Jewish (ha ha). Bolivar and Cincinnati seemed obvious to me.

by Anonymousreply 223November 9, 2021 12:16 AM

Can't remember when all three contestants were attractive, smart, amiable, and seemed to enjoy the experience.

by Anonymousreply 224November 9, 2021 1:48 AM

New champ also bears a resemblance to James Taylor.

Quirky Kate was cute on Friday, but she was beginning to annoy me tonight.

by Anonymousreply 225November 9, 2021 1:50 AM

Elena was so photogenic; she looked like Linda Ronstadt circa Simple Dreams. Fun game, and, yes, all three contestants seemed to enjoy themselves.

I missed Everest, but got Langston.

Ken is OK.

by Anonymousreply 226November 9, 2021 3:22 AM

Very good game. Thoroughly enjoyed it, as the contestants seemed to as well.

Wow! Ken just stepped back into the hosting role seamlessly. Felt very natural to have him there. Although it was weird hearing Johnny phrase it as "And now, hosting Jeopardy, Ken Jennings."

Ken seemed to be speaking from personal experience with various answers in the alcohol category in the first round. I through Mormons didn't drink alcohol.

I knew Cincinnati, but had no idea on Final.

Didn't realize it has been a year since Alex's death, but the card at the end reminded me of that. Wow! So much has happened with that show in a year's time.

by Anonymousreply 227November 9, 2021 8:04 AM

I wonder if our DL friends who loathe Mayim are watching again? Ken seemed really into getting back to hosting, even lost a bit of his usual dorkiness. I get the impression that asong as one doesn't go to outright drunkenness, moderate drinking is officially discouraged, but in practice tolerated - kind of like Catholics and birth control.

Couldn't agree more that last night was what we all were fantasizing about as Matt steamrolled his way through several weeks of shows.

by Anonymousreply 228November 9, 2021 11:39 AM

I liked Ken’s tan. Really brightened him up.

Story on Ken's return

by Anonymousreply 230November 9, 2021 10:16 PM

Dane is really growing on me, but I'll admit maybe it's the bald=high sex drive myth? Others gave it a good try for a solid game.

Had no idea of final, but got Byzantium, 1896, and arbitrage.

by Anonymousreply 231November 10, 2021 12:01 AM

I wish the producers would tell him to stand still. His constant rocking back and forth is making me dizzy and root against him.

by Anonymousreply 232November 10, 2021 12:05 AM

Ah, the final should have been easy for me (70s pop a strong category)... but wasn't, even with the more recent Streep film.

I disliked Ken the first time (and as a champion before that), but he seems more relaxed now and is doing a good job I think.

by Anonymousreply 233November 10, 2021 2:30 AM

I got Cordoba, but virtually nothing else, including FJ. Hillary was great competition for Dane.

by Anonymousreply 234November 10, 2021 3:05 AM

The only reason I knew FJ is because I'm a big Queen fan. A few years ago I watched a documentary on Bohemian Rhapsody and it mentioned that Abba's Mamma Mia replaced Rhapsody at number one on the charts and what a funny coincidence it was that the words Mamma Mia also appear in BR's lyrics. Had I not watched that doc, I wouldn't have had a clue what song they were looking for .....

by Anonymousreply 235November 10, 2021 3:12 AM

Great game tonight, Hillary was some good competition. And she pulled out hedge fund at the last second!

70s pop songs should be a strong category for me as well, but I really had no idea on Final. However, as Ken was reading the club, ABBA flashed in my head for some reason. If I'd paid attention to that ABBA nudge, I probably would have figured Final out.

Ken definitely seems more relaxed as host this time. Liking him more and more as host.

by Anonymousreply 236November 10, 2021 7:14 AM

For some reason Dancing Queen was all I could think of and I was running through the lyrics as fast as I could. Europop definitely meant ABBA, though.

by Anonymousreply 237November 10, 2021 8:10 AM

For any who did not watch Colin Powell's funeral, the military band played Dancing Queen as mourners entered the cathedral, he was a huge ABBA fan.

by Anonymousreply 238November 10, 2021 10:35 AM

Dane shows visible frustration when he misses a question.

by Anonymousreply 239November 10, 2021 10:53 AM

Ken is a bit more relaxed this time around - but I still love Mayim! She's a neuroscientist, you know.

by Anonymousreply 240November 10, 2021 7:23 PM

Happy to have both Mayim and Ken trade hosting duties permanently. They’re both doing a great job.

by Anonymousreply 241November 10, 2021 8:30 PM

Is anyone clear as to exactly what are the real reason(s) why neither Mayim nor Ken has been offered the hosting job full-time?

by Anonymousreply 242November 10, 2021 9:22 PM

I think they're waiting to see whether Mayim's show on Fox, "Call Me Kat" gets renewed for a third season.

But it also give audiences a chance to see Ken as host again. His last shows were in February, so he was a distant memory after going through 15 guest hosts since then.

by Anonymousreply 243November 10, 2021 10:21 PM

I'm wondering if it's more that Mayim is committed to working out this season of her show, and leaning against renewing anymore?

by Anonymousreply 244November 10, 2021 10:32 PM

Mayim has a contract for "Call Me Kat." Likely a five year contract. Possibly seven year.

She won't have a choice. If Fox renews the show, she is obligated to play the part.

by Anonymousreply 245November 10, 2021 10:36 PM

Well... no choice but to bet it all at the end for them.

Got Final, although if they hadn't thrown in Asia as a qualifier I'd have been tempted by Brazil. Ones they missed that I didn't: bid, Mexico City and protocol.

by Anonymousreply 246November 10, 2021 11:59 PM

What. A. Game. Andrew was a baller. So ballsy to go all in on that daily double and it paid off. Dane did a great job keeping up. I hope Andrew pulls off another win tomorrow. That was a fun and exciting match.

by Anonymousreply 247November 11, 2021 2:33 AM

I just read on reddit that Sam Kavanaugh trained for his TOC run with Andrew Ye so you know this Andrew guy is legit.

by Anonymousreply 248November 11, 2021 2:38 AM

Exciting game tonight. The two bet-it-all Daily Doubles in the second half were gutsy. Looking forward to seeing what Andrew can do.

I initially said India for Final, but switched at last second to Indonesia. If I'd been in the actual game, I wouldn't have had time to change my written answer before the clock ran out.

by Anonymousreply 249November 11, 2021 9:12 AM

I guessed the FJ answer, but it was just that, a guess.

by Anonymousreply 250November 11, 2021 11:25 AM

At least Mary was pretty.

by Anonymousreply 251November 11, 2021 1:17 PM

Tucker is quite the attractive male specimen.

Surprised no one could identify Halston, especially with Liza standing next to him in the photo.

Guessed Hope Diamond for FJ, strictly a lucky guess.

by Anonymousreply 252November 11, 2021 11:46 PM

I was a washout right through to FJ, for which I guessed "sapphire". I did get Halston--no Dataloungers among the contestants tonight, I guess. Still, both Tucker and Ken were sharply dressed.

by Anonymousreply 253November 12, 2021 3:25 AM

I have a feeling Andrew is going to be around for a while and I'm already tired of him! He's doing the James H style of play that Matt copied -- going after all the $1,000 clues first to quickly build up a strong lead and then dominate the game. Yawn! I'd rather see a competitive game.

Of course I knew who Halston was.

I also guessed Hope Diamond for Final, based on the blue reference.

by Anonymousreply 254November 12, 2021 6:10 AM

I also knew it was Hope Diamond because “blue.”

by Anonymousreply 255November 12, 2021 6:12 AM

Andrew is quite good. But I, too, am not looking forward to another champ who dominates game after game after game. Really prefer competitive games.

Only thing I could think of for Final was the Hope Diamond. I wasn't positive on that but couldn't think of anything else it could be. .

by Anonymousreply 256November 12, 2021 7:24 AM

Count me in as well as part of the "Andrew can go at any time and it's okay with me" crowd.

No idea of final, but did manage Halston, Benigno Aqiuno and Mammoth Cave.

by Anonymousreply 257November 12, 2021 12:08 PM
I have a feeling Andrew is going to be around for a while and I'm already tired of him! He's doing the James H style of play that Matt copied -- going after all the $1,000 clues first to quickly build up a strong lead and then dominate the game.

Of course, that only works if you know the answers -- or, rather, the questions. If you go after the big-money clues and DON'T know the answers, then you allow your opponents to build up a strong lead.

by Anonymousreply 258November 12, 2021 2:43 PM

Tonight's game was torturous to watch. Two extremely inferior contestants up against powerhouse Andrew with many unanswered responses.

Knew the correct play for FJ, but could not come up with the playwright.

by Anonymousreply 259November 12, 2021 10:10 PM

This Brennan guy is a babe, too bad he did so poorly in the game.

Once again tonight, the total amount of the champ's monetary winnings ended in "1," and Johnny Gilbert correctly pronounced the amount as "_____ and one dollars," rather than idiotically as ".....and one dollar." I thought I'd never see the day :-)

by Anonymousreply 260November 12, 2021 11:22 PM

I guessed Pinter.

Guess we're headed for several weeks of Matt 2.0?

by Anonymousreply 261November 13, 2021 12:00 AM

Was that woman's last name Lambfries?

by Anonymousreply 262November 13, 2021 12:28 AM

I'm surprised no one got The Exorcist, especially given the question was such a giveaway.

I knew FJ immediately, although I initially couldn't remember if the author's name was Stoppard or Stoddard - until I decided on Stoppard.

I thought Brennan was really sexy (and I liked his voice) - until he thought the first American saint was Betsy Ross. Oy!

by Anonymousreply 263November 13, 2021 12:29 AM

R263, "The Exorcist" was a DD, that dumb Dorothy blew.

by Anonymousreply 264November 13, 2021 12:37 AM

I felt Exorcist a giveaway as well. Others I knew they didn't: conservatory, Penn Station, Poseidon Adventure, and Edinburgh.

Her name was Lam Frey.

by Anonymousreply 265November 13, 2021 1:12 AM

How could these clowns not know The Poseidon Adventure?

by Anonymousreply 266November 13, 2021 4:19 AM

Brennan was very cute and well-dressed, but the fact that he chose to talk about genealogy for his chat was a boner killer for me; Ken seemed bored too.

I was impressed Andrew got Stoppard, as he had missed some of the old time culture questions mentioned above. He's fast on the buzzer and pretty well-rounded.

by Anonymousreply 267November 13, 2021 5:42 AM

Wow! What a bad game! So many questions they didn't get

I knew the Conservatory from Clue and I knew the Exorcist. Knew several others they missed as well.

Final was easy.

Andrew clearly said "heart" not "hearth." I'm surprised Ken accepted it and even more surprised the judges didn't review the tape and change the score.

Yes, I'm afraid we are stuck with Andrew for a while. I appreciate that he is smart and will likely win a lot of games and I wish him well at that. But from a viewer perspective, he's coming less than a month after we had to endure Matt's boring 38-game winning streak.

These champions who dominate the game for weeks on end are no longer exciting. Yes, I found it exciting in 2019 when James H did it because I'd never witnessed it before. And now, I'm witnessing it on a far too regular basis. The specialness has gone out of the event.

by Anonymousreply 268November 13, 2021 9:50 AM
Andrew clearly said "heart" not "hearth."

I didn't hear that, and I would think he knows the difference between those two words and how to pronounce them. But -- I believe it was the female contestant who answered another question "Catcher in the Rye," when the actual title is "The Catcher in the Rye," and I was surprised that was accepted. I guess I still don't have a 100 percent clear picture of what is acceptable and what isn't in terms of leaving out articles, mispronunciation, etc.
Yes, I'm afraid we are stuck with Andrew for a while.

I'm not sure about that. There were quite a lot of clues last night for which he gave either no answer or the wrong answer, and there were a few times when someone else rang in first with the wrong answer and then Andrew gave the right one. So I think another smart player with good buzzer technique could topple him, as compared to last night's competition, both of whom seemed well below average in terms of knowledge and ability.

by Anonymousreply 269November 13, 2021 1:24 PM

We've also had some steamrolling by Jonathan (and Tyler) as well post-Matt. I kind of liked the woman from Oregon who's gotten into camping. Agreed that Brennon was good-looking, but sitting through a second date?

by Anonymousreply 270November 13, 2021 2:07 PM

Andrew isn't very smart in a lot of categories, and he also takes big chances with the DD. That's going to be his downfall. I was really impressed, however, he knew the Stoppard answer.

by Anonymousreply 271November 13, 2021 4:52 PM

I like Andrew. He’s bold.

by Anonymousreply 272November 13, 2021 7:57 PM

Almost got rid of Andrew. There is hope, because he’s somewhat inconsistent in what he knows.

by Anonymousreply 273November 15, 2021 11:57 PM

Well at least tonight's final showed that he's not completely unstoppable... is he?

He, Matt and Jonathan as the three TOC finalists... oy!

by Anonymousreply 274November 16, 2021 12:08 AM

Ken is getting on my nerves. Prefer Mayim as host.

by Anonymousreply 275November 16, 2021 12:09 AM

Another great game, they should all be that competitive.

Odd that as smart and knowledgeable as Andrew is, he missed an easy one like "Bon Voyage".

by Anonymousreply 276November 16, 2021 3:04 AM

Why would you want him stopped? He’s not boring. He’s bold.

by Anonymousreply 277November 16, 2021 3:19 AM

Exciting game, with all three contestants having good runs of answers. Jeff aced the Hitchcock movies, just missing the $200. Credit to Andrew for doing what he had to do to try to get farther ahead. FJ was kind of lame.

by Anonymousreply 278November 16, 2021 3:30 AM

Great game tonight! I liked both Molly and Jeff. Andrew seemed off for most of the game until he bet it all in the Daily Double.

I guessed Sherwood Forest for Final, although I was fairly certain that was wrong.

by Anonymousreply 279November 16, 2021 4:16 AM

Molly seemed VERY twitchy, definitely on the spectrum somewhere.

by Anonymousreply 280November 16, 2021 4:48 AM

To each their own, R277. I loathed "bold" James; like Andrew, always bottom up on the board.

I knew what they were going after with final, but all I could come up with was Excaliber.

by Anonymousreply 281November 16, 2021 12:25 PM

I guessed that FJ referred to Camelot, but for some extremely weird reason, I thought they were going for the name of the place where King Arthur died after Camelot ceased to be. (I still don't remember the name of that place.)

by Anonymousreply 282November 16, 2021 2:02 PM

Newark.

by Anonymousreply 283November 16, 2021 2:16 PM

R282. Avalon

by Anonymousreply 284November 16, 2021 2:33 PM

Frankie Avalon was in Camelot?

by Anonymousreply 285November 16, 2021 2:49 PM

I agree, r280. Molly's facial expressions were distracting. I knew her Daily Double referred to Egypt/King Tut, but couldn't remember the archeologist's name.

by Anonymousreply 286November 16, 2021 6:35 PM

FJ was incredibly easy, amazed that Andrew didn't get it.

Michael, the film critic and conflicts analyst, was coming on strong but then fizzled.

by Anonymousreply 287November 17, 2021 12:03 AM

Well, that was frustrating! Wasn't exactly thrilled with the toothy opponent who seemed to have a bit of attitude, but if only he'd amassed a bit more he'd of been able to dethrone the endless Andrew.

Final was easy... as was Joan Rivers! Rijksmuseum not quite so much.

by Anonymousreply 288November 17, 2021 12:03 AM

"he'd of been"

Oh, dear.

by Anonymousreply 289November 17, 2021 12:19 AM

FJ was easy tonight

by Anonymousreply 290November 17, 2021 1:34 AM

Another great game. Andrew doesn't bother me nearly so much when he has some good competition.

I was rooting for Michael to win. Unfortunately, he lost his mojo once he lost on the Daily Double. Michael pinged for me. Did he ping for anyone else? .

Of course, Final was super easy! How many movie franchises have 25 installments.

by Anonymousreply 291November 17, 2021 4:26 AM

And yet, I couldn't think of it.

by Anonymousreply 292November 17, 2021 11:28 AM

I guessed "Shaken, not stirred" which was dumb now that I think about it. That wouldn't have been in the first few lines of dialogue.

by Anonymousreply 293November 17, 2021 11:51 AM

R293, We're all embarrassed for you.

by Anonymousreply 294November 17, 2021 12:05 PM

Indeed, Michael pinged fairly strongly.

by Anonymousreply 295November 17, 2021 12:23 PM

R293- Not to worry, I did too.

by Anonymousreply 296November 17, 2021 4:39 PM
Indeed, Michael pinged fairly strongly.

And his over-the-top grimacing every time he made a wrong response was either quite amusing or annoying, depending on your point of view.

by Anonymousreply 297November 17, 2021 9:42 PM

Another competitive game tonight.

I also guessed Ellis Island for FJ.

Gotta ask . . . Did anyone else get a tranny vibe from Amy?

by Anonymousreply 298November 17, 2021 9:50 PM

No, no tranny vibe, sorry.

I thought Long Island at first, but changed it to Manhattan at the last minute recalling Trinity. Being from the NYC area, I don't get Ellis Island unless it's an island name folks from elsewhere know as a wild guess?

One I got they didn't: tarantella.

by Anonymousreply 299November 18, 2021 12:01 AM

Maybe I'm too old, but I thought the tarantella and Glen Campbell answers were obvious. And Manhattan seemed like a giveaway and I was surprised Andrew didn't get it.

Max had WAY too much beard. If I saw him in real life, I'm not sure I'd ever make eye contact because that monstrous beard would be too distracting.

The second Amy came on screen, my first thought was that someone here at DL would would ask, "Trans?"

by Anonymousreply 300November 18, 2021 1:05 AM

The thing about Manhattan is that other than Trinity, they pretty much did away with all of the cemeteries on the island in the 1800s. Agree the beard was too much.

by Anonymousreply 301November 18, 2021 1:08 AM

Ken is too animated. It irritated. I tuned out after he exclaimed only one contestant had money on the board. It was too early in the game for this reaction. I am going to wait for Mayim's return to resume watching.

by Anonymousreply 302November 18, 2021 1:14 AM

Congrats to Amy for knocking off Andrew. And, I would not be shocked in the least to find out that Amy is trans.

by Anonymousreply 303November 18, 2021 1:25 AM

She is R303. I was reading her Twitter Jeopardy story and she confirms she’s trans.

by Anonymousreply 304November 18, 2021 1:34 AM

R304, If she stays on for a while, I wonder if it will be mentioned in one of her interviews.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 305November 18, 2021 1:42 AM

Good game. Amy got a lot of tough questions, and Andrew bet big again on the Daily Double. I was stumped by FJ and thought Max might come up the middle and win. I did know tarantella because it's in "A Doll's House". I'm not a techie, but thought router was kind of obvious.

by Anonymousreply 306November 18, 2021 3:22 AM

Tranny at first sight.

by Anonymousreply 307November 18, 2021 5:11 AM

I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said “tranny.” Brave trans woman of pallidity.

by Anonymousreply 308November 18, 2021 5:14 AM

Do you think if a contestant had pronounced tarantella like the spider "taranCHELa" they would have received credit?

by Anonymousreply 309November 18, 2021 11:39 AM

I knew tarantella because of Hook in PETER PAN.

by Anonymousreply 310November 18, 2021 12:05 PM

R310, I knew it because Gina Lollobrigida danced it on "Falcon Crest".

by Anonymousreply 311November 18, 2021 12:30 PM

I knew tarantella because of "Moonstruck", where Dean Martin's version of "That's Amore" plays during the credits.

[italics]Bells will ring, ting-a-ling-a-ling Ting-a-ling-a-ling and you'll sing, "Vita bella" Hearts will play tippy-tippy-tay Tippy-tippy-tay like a gay tarantella[/italics]

You gays are slipping!

by Anonymousreply 312November 18, 2021 12:35 PM

I don’t know why I knew tarantella.

by Anonymousreply 313November 18, 2021 12:37 PM

There have been previous trans contestants on Jeopardy!, but not champions.

If Amy prevails for a while, the mainstream media should feature her journey, which she's candid about on social media.

by Anonymousreply 314November 18, 2021 12:37 PM

Amy's other tv appearance is on "Family Guy".

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 315November 18, 2021 12:39 PM

R314, Actually, there was a previous trans champion, Kate Freeman in 2020.

by Anonymousreply 316November 18, 2021 12:46 PM

Amy!!!

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 317November 18, 2021 12:48 PM

Couldn’t she see a stylist before appearing on national TV?

by Anonymousreply 318November 18, 2021 12:48 PM

I knew tarantella because being of Italian descent, I've heard it played at every single family member's wedding reception - and I have a whole lot of cousins.

Plus it's referenced in Dominick the Donkey - a Christmas song I was subjected to way too many times when I was a kid.

by Anonymousreply 319November 18, 2021 1:04 PM

Taylor was sexy and he had a good attitude.

So many clues went unanswered, some quite easy.

Blanked on FJ.

by Anonymousreply 320November 18, 2021 10:59 PM

Taylor was sexy, but I found him rather boring. I did get final as Punic Wars, but wouldn't have if they'd insisted on Carthaginian. Seemed obvious to me, but not to the brainiacs: USVI were Danish, Falklands = Malvinas, and New Caledonia.

Would love to see Amy win the TOC!

by Anonymousreply 321November 19, 2021 12:05 AM

Taylor was sexy. He just had some bad luck with the back-to-back DDs.

Got FJ and the USVI was easy (it helped that I lived there for two years).

They did let quite a few go unanswered, which may indicate that Amy could be vulnerable.

by Anonymousreply 322November 19, 2021 12:10 AM

I have to admit I chuckled when Amy guessed menopause correctly.

by Anonymousreply 323November 19, 2021 12:12 AM

Taylor was just my type. Love the glasses, beard, and voice. He got the wrong categories for his Daily Doubles, and I thought his "leonine" sounded OK.

by Anonymousreply 324November 19, 2021 3:57 AM

Been super busy with work, so caught up on several days episodes.

From Wednesday's show: Bravo to Amy for knocking out Andrew! Interestingly, I thought she had a masculine vibe to her, but the idea she was trans did not cross my mind. Yes, Max's beard was ultra unattractive. I couldn't warm up to him because I kept thinking, "Why don't you trim your beard or at least groom it."

Governor's Island is what popped to my mind for Final on Wednesday.

From Thursday's show: Amy was impressive. She proved she's no one-show wonder. I would have no objection to her sticking around for a few shows. I liked Taylor, was sorry the back to back Daily Doubles were his downfall.

I had no idea on Thursday's Final. I took a stab at it and said the Peloponnesian War.

by Anonymousreply 325November 19, 2021 6:57 AM

I felt he mangled leonine, so the correction no surprise to me. Tonight's challengers seem like quite a pair!

by Anonymousreply 326November 19, 2021 12:02 PM

R326, One is an Asian Catholic seminarian.

by Anonymousreply 327November 19, 2021 1:47 PM

Could tonight's FJ have been any easier?

In fact, many of tonight's clues were pretty obvious.

Felt bad for the priest in training, who started off strong and then soiled himself.

by Anonymousreply 328November 19, 2021 9:44 PM

I did great in the first have, but fell down a bit during DJ. I couldn't think of one of the FJ names at first, but it came to me in time.

I hope Amy will get a chance to shave her 'stache before they tape the next episode.

by Anonymousreply 329November 19, 2021 10:09 PM

"Good luck with the priesthood!" - - Ken Jennings

Yeah, I'd say Queen Victoria opening the Getty Museum qualified as soiling himself. Only other one I knew they didn't was Concord being in Merrimack County.

by Anonymousreply 330November 20, 2021 12:01 AM

Do you think Amy purposely passed on saying “Man, I Feel Like a Woman”?

by Anonymousreply 331November 20, 2021 1:45 AM

Tonight was uncomfortable, for me anyway. Did he have to wear his priest get up?

by Anonymousreply 332November 20, 2021 2:13 AM

Is that priest's St. John of the Cross wearing a bath towel and rapping video on Youtube?

by Anonymousreply 333November 20, 2021 5:30 AM

Great game tonight! I really like Amy. She's proving you can win big without having to play a super-aggressive game of going after all the $1,000 clues first like Matt and Andrew were playing. And she's already over $100,000 after just three games!

I liked the priest in training. Started strong but lost it badly in second half.

I knew Victoria and Albert Museum. Also knew Final was Harper Lee and Truman Capote, but only because Harper Lee was a character in one of those Capote biopics that came out 15 years ago (there were two biopics released about a year apart).

I'm liking Ken more and more as host. He's settled into the role nicely. He's definitely more comfortable as host this time than he was in January and February, although being the first host after Alex's passing would have to have been nerve wracking for anybody.

by Anonymousreply 334November 20, 2021 8:45 AM

R334, I agree with you about Ken, although I didn't think he seemed at all uncomfortable in his first stint as host back in January and February.

As for Amy, I think I'm going to wait till she/they are gone before I tune into the show again. I've had a similar reaction to a few of the recent multi-game champs, because I found all of them off-putting in one way or another.

by Anonymousreply 335November 20, 2021 4:40 PM

Lee was in both Capote and Infamous

by Anonymousreply 336November 20, 2021 6:13 PM

Mack was very hot, but the "girlfriend" mention...

by Anonymousreply 337November 23, 2021 12:00 AM

No one could identify Grace Kelly from a clear color photograph?

Heidi could have stepped out for a bite to eat and not been missed.

Amy looked rather attractive tonight with her new hairstyle.

Blanked on FJ.

by Anonymousreply 338November 23, 2021 12:47 AM

I’m ready for Amy to move on. It will never happen now, but I’d love to see a return to the cap of a winner remaining for five shows only. The producers want the “thrill” of the horse race to build some fake drama over multi-day winners.

FJ was easy if you knew Harding’s background.

by Anonymousreply 339November 23, 2021 12:53 AM
FJ was easy if you knew Harding’s background

So, it was easy if you knew the answer. Thanks for the insight.

by Anonymousreply 340November 23, 2021 1:02 AM

I knew final, but not Grace Kelly.

by Anonymousreply 341November 23, 2021 1:52 AM

I guessed Taft. Didn’t know Harding was from Ohion.

by Anonymousreply 342November 23, 2021 2:29 AM

^Ohio, dammit

by Anonymousreply 343November 23, 2021 2:30 AM

Yeah, I guessed Taft. Amy is impressing me... the range of her knowledge. I think she'll be around a while.

Ken Jennings... doing well this time. But here's my question: he looks more handsome to me than the past. I know, a tan and a good haircut can help a lot. But has he had surgery, DL experts?

by Anonymousreply 344November 23, 2021 2:34 AM

R344 Is physical attraction that important to you? Maybe you're starting to like him for other reasons.

by Anonymousreply 345November 23, 2021 2:41 AM

I knew Grace but not Warren. Amy's run in the last half of Double Jeopardy was amazing, fast answers to some really hard questions on very different subjects,

Ken did look pretty sharp tonight.

by Anonymousreply 346November 23, 2021 3:26 AM

Did anyone else think Double Jeopardy was easier than Jeopardy today? Obviously not Heidi, but anyone else?

by Anonymousreply 347November 23, 2021 3:34 AM

Another good game. Mack was a good contestant. At one point, it looked like he might overtake Amy.

Amy is impressive. She racks up a large amounts of money based on her knowledge, not on aggressively going after the $1,000 clues first. Give me an Amy any day over a Matt.

I knew Grace Kelly. Was also surprised no one knew her.

I guessed Harding for Final. And that was purely a guess. I knew it had to be one of the presidents prior to Hoover in 1928.. I never can keep all those presidents from the late 1800s and early 1900s straight.

by Anonymousreply 348November 23, 2021 7:23 AM

Wonder if Grace Kelly would have been more recognizable to the contestants if she had been pictured in one of her films.

by Anonymousreply 349November 23, 2021 11:44 AM

I thought at first 10 was going to say to Amy "We have something in common, I'm a guy and you used to be a guy!"

Knew final immediately, as well as a few the brainiacs whiffed: Gerald Ford, Father Flanagan, Missouri River, pituitary gland, and mitral valve.

Can't wait to see Amy and Matt on the same stage!

by Anonymousreply 350November 24, 2021 12:23 AM

Knew final, but not much else. Matt started out OK, but that deep red ending must hurt.

by Anonymousreply 351November 24, 2021 3:37 AM

Wow. Matt just kept climbing deeper and deeper into the red.

But Amy continues to impress. Yes, can't wait to see her opposite Matt.

Had no idea on Final. I guessed Helsinki.

by Anonymousreply 352November 24, 2021 7:11 AM

At least Matt mastered the signaling device.

Wasn't he the third contestant this week to be ineligible for FJ?

by Anonymousreply 353November 24, 2021 10:01 AM

Let's face it. A lot of Amodio wannabes in the pool. And they're just not up to the task.

by Anonymousreply 354November 24, 2021 4:45 PM

Too many inept players going right to $1,000 and $2,000 answers when they don't have the brains for them.

by Anonymousreply 355November 24, 2021 7:55 PM

Amy's response of "oral fixation" made me chuckle.

There have been enough runaway games this season to last me for a long while.

by Anonymousreply 356November 24, 2021 9:27 PM
Too many inept players going right to $1,000 and $2,000 answers when they don't have the brains for them.

This comment makes no sense to me. They're going to get the same questions (or answers) right or wrong regardless of when they go for them, so what's the difference?

by Anonymousreply 357November 24, 2021 9:38 PM

R357 Ha, right. The mentally challenged ones need to "warm up" their synapses on easier answers before they can answer the hard ones. right.

by Anonymousreply 358November 24, 2021 10:22 PM

R357, When they go for the big money clues and respond incorrectly, they run the risk of drowning in debt and not being eligible for FJ.

There's also been a recent increase in DD wagers, which when guessed incorrectly can make it impossible to recover.

by Anonymousreply 359November 24, 2021 10:51 PM
When they go for the big money clues and respond incorrectly, they run the risk of drowning in debt and not being eligible for FJ.

Ummm, but they don't HAVE to buzz in, and they SHOULDN'T buzz in, unless they know the answer. Also, if they buzz in for the big-money clues and give wrong answers at ANY point during the game, they still "run the risk of drowning in debt." So again, the comment that "too many inept players going right to $1,000 and $2,000 answers when they don't have the brains for them" makes zero sense to me.

The point is that contestants run the same level of risk with the big-money clues no matter when they choose them. Do you disagree with or not understand that?

by Anonymousreply 360November 25, 2021 12:03 AM

No idea of final. Did know about German shepherds as Seeing Eye Foundation headquartered in my hometown, also knew Lyme was in CT.

by Anonymousreply 361November 25, 2021 12:04 AM

R360, Do you suffer from some sort of comprehension issue or do you just lack common sense?

by Anonymousreply 362November 25, 2021 12:12 AM

R362, if my logic is flawed, it should be easy for you to explain how. Please do so -- or piss off.

by Anonymousreply 363November 25, 2021 12:15 AM

R363, You bring nothing but negativity to this thread with your delusional postings.

Please do us all a favor and disappear.

by Anonymousreply 364November 25, 2021 12:20 AM

R364 ... says he with the most negative posting in the thread. Ha. Would to God the gift he gi' us....

I got Royal Society of Science... guess that would be wrong.

The Ambassador of France wasn't accepted because the correct answer was the French Ambassador. Did I hear that right?

by Anonymousreply 365November 25, 2021 2:32 AM

Thanks, R365. I don't think I'm being "negative" in questioning someone's nonsensical comment that "too many inept players go right to $1,000 and $2,000 answers when they don't have the brains for them" because "when they go for the big money clues and respond incorrectly, they run the risk of drowning in debt and not being eligible for FJ." This person doesn't seem to understand that the contestants would lose (or win) exactly the same amount of much money if they went for those same clues later in the game.

by Anonymousreply 366November 25, 2021 3:30 AM

I had no idea for FJ. Amy is so good. I did know the D.H. Lawrence and Thornton Wilder answers; and I'm sure everyone on DL got "90210".

by Anonymousreply 367November 25, 2021 3:40 AM

I got Ottawa because the event’s name was English and the canal’s name was French. English + French = Canada.

by Anonymousreply 368November 25, 2021 5:00 AM

R366, If a contestant repeatedly selects the larger amount clues and responds incorrectly over and over, as with Matt this week, then it would not be mathematically possible for them to get out of the red and be eligible for FJ.

by Anonymousreply 369November 25, 2021 7:10 AM

Another good game. Go Amy!

I'm not clear on why the French Ambassador is correct bu the Ambassador of France is incorrect. However, it's possible she said Ambassador TO France. Madeline didn't enunciate all of her words well. I rewound the tape three times trying to hear the one kind of pie she liked and still couldn't understand what she said. More importantly, Who Doesn't Like Pie?!?!

Of course I knew Beverly Hills 90210. Don't tell me that show is too old for those players.

Had no idea on Final.

Happy Thanksgiving to all my DL Jeopardy friends.

by Anonymousreply 370November 25, 2021 9:18 AM

Without watching the episode again, I believe she said ambassador TO France. The one kind of pie she liked was pizza. Had no idea of 90210, but then again, I'm old!

Amy's facial expressions are a hoot! She's far more likeable than cutthroats James and Matt.

by Anonymousreply 371November 25, 2021 10:40 AM

Yet another edition of The Amy Schneider Show.

FJ was so easy tonight.

by Anonymousreply 372November 26, 2021 12:39 AM
If a contestant repeatedly selects the larger amount clues and responds incorrectly over and over, as with Matt this week, then it would not be mathematically possible for them to get out of the red and be eligible for FJ.

Yes, but (1) they should not buzz in for the big money clues if they're not fairly certain they know the answers; and (2) if they DO know the answers to the big-money clues, they stand to get way ahead of their opponents. The comment I was referring to that makes no sense was the one someone posted about how contestants shouldn't go for the big money clues first, but again, it makes NO DIFFERENCE when they go for those clues, because the amount of money they will win or lose remains the same. So the only problem is when a player who's not very smart repeatedly goes for the big-money clues and then repeatedly buzzes in even when they don't know the answer, as Matt did.

I hope that clarifies what I meant.

by Anonymousreply 373November 26, 2021 3:28 AM

I think going for the big money clues first can be a hindrance in only few incidences, like when it's a "novelty" category, for lack of a better term. You think you know what the clue writers were going for, but since it's not a regular category, you phrase it incorrectly, or even though you are sure you know the answer, you don't because of the atypical category. But you would have known it, or got the phrasing correct *after* you rang in incorrectly on the lesser $200 or $400 questions and then understood the category.

by Anonymousreply 374November 26, 2021 3:44 AM

I got FJ, but had never heard of Jack Weinberg; I thought it was a generic 60s slogan...

by Anonymousreply 375November 26, 2021 3:51 AM

Thanks, R374. Now THAT does make sense to me, at least when we're talking about a "novelty" category that requires strange phrasing of the answer, or whatever. On the other hand, if it's a straightforward category with no curve balls, it's theoretically not a bad idea to go for the big-money clues first -- but again, you'd better be sure, or fairly sure, you know the correct answer before buzzing in, and that's where that Matt fellow failed miserably.

by Anonymousreply 376November 26, 2021 3:59 AM

Matt Amodio has admitted in interviews that he was not certain of every response when he buzzed in first. That's why he used the generic "What is" in his responses to give himself more time to come up with the correct response, and given his breadth of knowledge he almost always did.

by Anonymousreply 377November 26, 2021 9:29 AM

I had no idea of Final. Was impressed Amy came up with Iowa (IA) in time! Knew Reagan/McDonald's were from IL, writer Michael Lewis, and the Theroux guys (have read all of his travel books).

by Anonymousreply 378November 26, 2021 11:44 AM

Another good game. Amy continues to impress.

I knew IA instantly. I eventually got Final after initially thinking "Don't trust the government." However, I doubt I would have had time to write "Don't Trust Anyone Over 30" before time was up.

by Anonymousreply 379November 26, 2021 12:13 PM

I think FJ was easy for the edergays among us who were there when the phrase was popular.

by Anonymousreply 380November 26, 2021 1:36 PM

You all must be quite the geezers, as I'm 61 and barely recall the expression.

by Anonymousreply 381November 26, 2021 2:11 PM

Why the hell did Ken pronounce Theroux two different ways if they both have the same last name?

by Anonymousreply 382November 26, 2021 2:36 PM

Justin pronounces his last name differently from his uncle Paul.

by Anonymousreply 384November 26, 2021 2:45 PM

Well, "oux" in French is properly pronounced as "oo," not as a long "o" sound as in "toe." Since both the "oo" and long "o" sounds exist in English, and since "oux" is not a spelling you would see in English, there's no reason to pronounce to pronounce Theroux with a long "o" sound when you might as well do it correctly.

by Anonymousreply 385November 26, 2021 2:52 PM

For Ken to pronounce the name differently in the same breath, when the two men are related, just sounded inane.

by Anonymousreply 386November 26, 2021 3:03 PM

When I was at college in Maine, that name was usually heard as similar to the word True.

by Anonymousreply 387November 26, 2021 4:03 PM

ON the contrary, Ken sounded informed. I'm no fan, but I was impressed.

by Anonymousreply 388November 26, 2021 4:08 PM

Ken made it sound as though the family was delusional. I wasn't impressed.

by Anonymousreply 389November 26, 2021 4:15 PM

Does anyone else notice Amy's voice getting lower as the days go by?

by Anonymousreply 390November 26, 2021 5:14 PM
Why the hell did Ken pronounce Theroux two different ways if they both have the same last name?

Because Justin is pretensieux.

by Anonymousreply 391November 26, 2021 7:24 PM

Shame that both contenders blew their DDs.

Chris' cockiness might put off some, but I found him rather charming.

FJ was another easy one, especially if you were around in 1972.

by Anonymousreply 392November 26, 2021 8:15 PM

I was around in 1972 and had no idea what they were talking about. Greta was very attractive! Chris, I'm afraid, had a higher opinion of himself than he deserves. Should've known Charlemagne.

by Anonymousreply 393November 27, 2021 12:01 AM

I saw only the second half of the game because the first half was preempted by football in the NY metro area.

Initially I found Chris attractive because he's thin and has BDF. But if I had to watch him for the whole 30 minutes, I'd have a very different opinion.

I should've gotten Watership Down because I read it a few decades ago. Instead a drew a blank.

But then I also didn't get yesterday's "Don't trust anyone over 30."

by Anonymousreply 394November 27, 2021 12:43 AM

How ironic that Chris, a composer and lyricist, appears on the same day Stephen Sondheim dies.

by Anonymousreply 395November 27, 2021 12:55 AM

Poor G, forgotten again. Except by DL...

by Anonymousreply 396November 27, 2021 3:25 AM

Actually, r395, it's just a coincidence.

by Anonymousreply 397November 27, 2021 4:18 AM

R397, Ironic in that this cock sure, full of himself, wannabe "composer and lyricist" appears on the day one of the most noted, accomplished and admired composers of our time passes away.

by Anonymousreply 398November 27, 2021 7:18 AM

Another good game. I liked both Chris and Greta, but both flubbed the Daily Doubles and never rebounded.

Was that a rainbow flag pin that Amy wore on her lapel?

No idea on Final. Never read Watership Down. If I'd had to guess, I might have put down the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. But I was fairly sure that came out much earlier than 1972.

by Anonymousreply 399November 27, 2021 9:56 AM

I noticed tonight that Amy also responded with “what is” when the clue referred to a person.

Chris was one of the most pompous players to ever appear on the show.

by Anonymousreply 400November 27, 2021 10:46 AM

I believe it was a trans pin, but cannot be sure as we got no closeup. All I could think of for final, instead of nothing, was A Wrinkle in Time.

by Anonymousreply 401November 27, 2021 12:10 PM

R400, So did Greta with her "What is Walter Mitty?" response.

by Anonymousreply 402November 27, 2021 1:57 PM

R400, Chris was definitely over the top pompous, but I still found him quite sexy, especially his voice.

by Anonymousreply 403November 27, 2021 2:01 PM
I liked both Chris and Greta, but both flubbed the Daily Doubles and never rebounded.

Regarding the Daily Doubles, here's another of my theories (which I'm sure some people will disagree with): Because the Daily Doubles (and Final Jeopardy) are the only cases where a player is required to make a wager BEFORE receiving the clue, I would advise people to always bet conservatively on a Daily Double except in special circumstances -- for example, if it's a category in which they consider themselves expert, or if they are so far behind in the game that they might as well bet a lot on the Daily Double in an attempt to catch up.

by Anonymousreply 404November 27, 2021 3:28 PM

Gee, R404, did you come up with that theory all by yourself?

Duh!

by Anonymousreply 405November 27, 2021 4:27 PM

R405, you may "duh!" me, but it seems to me that most players don't agree with my philosophy, and they often bet large amounts on the Daily Doubles even when they're not far behind and need to catch up, or when they're not experts in the category.

by Anonymousreply 406November 27, 2021 4:32 PM

That’s not ironic.

by Anonymousreply 407November 27, 2021 10:11 PM

Amy's winning streak is really beginning to bore me.

Yet another obvious FJ.

by Anonymousreply 408November 29, 2021 7:38 PM

The doctor seemed to have gay voice to me. We were not amused by the story of being Falafel's mommy.

Final was obvious.

by Anonymousreply 409November 29, 2021 11:59 PM

All winning streaks that go past five games bore me. I found it just as boring to watch Matt and James vanquish everyone.

by Anonymousreply 410November 30, 2021 12:23 AM

Two questions: (1) Does anyone know offhand when they eliminated the 5-game win limit for each winner that apparently used to exist (I really don't remember for sure); and (2) has anyone tried to write an analysis of why there have been SO many winners with long winning streaks over the past several years? It does seem odd to me that so many people would retain the champion crown for SO long.

by Anonymousreply 411November 30, 2021 2:24 AM
We were not amused by the story of being Falafel's mommy.

R409 Many of the "human interest" stories at the beginning of the show are pretty close to the Gloria Upson's "I stepped right on the ping pong ball" story.

One of the easiest FJs in a while.

by Anonymousreply 412November 30, 2021 2:30 AM

Good game once again. Yes, Final was very easy.

I understand that a champ on a winning streak can get boring for viewers. I was certainly bored by Matt by the end and rooting for his opponents. However, I'm not feeling that yet about Amy. As I've said before, she's winning big by playing a "straight" game going down the category starting with the $200 clue first, $400 next, etc. She finishes off the category before moving to the next one. That style of play allows me to appreciate her knowledge more.

The others who I've tired off have been the aggressive players who go for all the $1,000 clues first, then all the $800 clues, then all the $600 clues, etc. All that jumping between categories makes it much harder for the viewer to keep up. I've come to really dislike this aggressive play as well as the players who engage in it.

by Anonymousreply 413November 30, 2021 5:37 AM

Hardcore Jeopardy! fans, do NOT miss tonight's game.

That's all I'll reveal.

by Anonymousreply 414November 30, 2021 7:34 PM

Thanks for your discretion.

by Anonymousreply 415November 30, 2021 8:02 PM

I just watched it, r414. What was so "do NOT miss" about it?

by Anonymousreply 416November 30, 2021 8:50 PM

Whenever you want to complain about Amy, one round of Pam was enough for me.

by Anonymousreply 417November 30, 2021 10:24 PM

Maybe this was brought up before and I missed it, but I was surprised, to say the least, by the revelation that this Amy person has a girlfriend. I had guessed that this person was a gay man who transitioned for whatever reason(s), but now it turns out this person likes girls.

I really do understand this is not all about me, but for what it's worth, I'm always EXTREMELY confused when people transition to the opposite gender, but then their romantic/sexual partners are people of that same new gender. Does this mean that this former male didn't want to have a romantic or sexual relationship with a woman as a man but transitioned so they could have sex with other women as a woman herself? Please forgive me if I just don't get it.

by Anonymousreply 418November 30, 2021 11:38 PM

Pam reminded me of a former dentist I loathed.

by Anonymousreply 419November 30, 2021 11:59 PM

Yeah, Pam had a frigid air about her.

Still, I want SOMEONE to knock off Amy. The repeat multi-night winners get rather boring, especially when the winners dominate in runaway games. 🥱

by Anonymousreply 420December 1, 2021 12:04 AM

Tonight was not a runaway game.

by Anonymousreply 421December 1, 2021 12:10 AM

No, but most of Amy’s have been.

by Anonymousreply 422December 1, 2021 12:16 AM

It is confusing, r418.

by Anonymousreply 423December 1, 2021 2:20 AM

Pam seems like a Dr. Amy Bishop type.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 424December 1, 2021 2:21 AM

Pam was f***ing scary as hell. I love the story about getting rid of aggression. Maybe get rid of just a wee bit more, eh?

Happy Amy won. I'll stay on Team Amy if the alternatives are Pams.

I had no clue on FJ. The plural confused me.

by Anonymousreply 425December 1, 2021 4:45 AM

During the game itself Pam seemed ready to cut two bitches, but she was less intense chatting with Ken and even smiled a little. I liked Krys, the quintessential substitute teacher.

I guessed Twin Cities for FJ, and struck out with mythology and Johnny Gilbert's movie characters too, except for Dirty Harry.

by Anonymousreply 426December 1, 2021 4:52 AM

I'm obviously in the minority, but I enjoyed Pam's "Take no prisoners" attitude. She had a spectacular first round.

Tuesday's game was highly competitive and suspenseful, the way all Jeopardy! games should be.

by Anonymousreply 427December 1, 2021 6:01 AM

Great game on Tuesday! Very enjoyable!

Thank goodness that Pam lost! Could not have dealt with a cold, aggressive person like her as champ. One round of her was more than enough of Pam. Thank goodness she stumbled on the DD in the second round!

Amazed as I am to say it, I am beginning to tire of Amy now that she's hit 10 games. But I'll take Amy for the next 100 games over Pam.

But Bravo to Amy for being such an impressive player. Interesting to hear her pearls story.

I figured out Final but only at the very last second. Would not have had time to write it down.

For all those confused about Amy's sexual and gender identity, there are two different anti-trans threads running dedicated to Amy's Jeopardy run. Perhaps you can find answers there. One is titled "Amy Schneider, a transgender woman." Other is titled "A Trans Contestant Just Won on Jeopardy."

by Anonymousreply 428December 1, 2021 11:00 AM

Final was pretty much a giveaway. Copenhagen???

I was gobsmacked at the outset when none of them could come up with does (verb) and does (animals)!

by Anonymousreply 429December 1, 2021 11:54 PM

I was quite confused by the Dr. Seuss-Frank Capra clue. Amy tends to start slowly and then steamroll--super player.

by Anonymousreply 430December 2, 2021 5:53 AM

Sinnott is quite the cutie.

I guessed Sitting Bull for FJ.

by Anonymousreply 431December 2, 2021 7:16 PM

Oh, lovely. Another Amy runaway game. 🥱🙄

by Anonymousreply 432December 2, 2021 11:49 PM

Wow! Go Amy! She continues to impress.

Ended up watching the Wednesday and Thursday games back to back. Really interesting seeing how Amy just powers through the Double Jeopardy round.

For Wednesday's show, I guessed Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, for Final. However, I was fairly confident Brasilia was built in the 60s or 70s, not 1913. Just looked it up, Brasilia was inaugurated as the capital in 1960.

For Thursday's show, I instantly knew Custer for Final because of the Bismark clue.

by Anonymousreply 433December 3, 2021 7:35 AM

Someone answered “General Custer.” He was a Colonel. They ignored this. What if they had written “Fred Custer?” Would they get credit?

by Anonymousreply 434December 3, 2021 4:41 PM

FJ made me go "Duh" after I got it wrong and saw the answer. I wonder if the Professors' Tournament will be two weeks of Mensa-level impossible questions.

by Anonymousreply 435December 4, 2021 5:50 AM

Wow! Amy has over $500,000 after just 13 games. She's now tied for 7th place in the number of consecutive games won and in 4th place for the highest winnings in regular game play. Impressive.

I had no idea on Final, but once I saw the answer, also did a Duh.

A professor's tournament? Humm. That will be intriguing. From my time in grad school, I found the smartest professors seemed to lack a lot of social skills, so it will be interesting to see how they behave. Or if they want to argue over some of the answers. Could be a train wreck. Or could be really fun. I'll look forward to seeing what happens.

by Anonymousreply 436December 4, 2021 12:42 PM

The return of Mayim!

by Anonymousreply 437December 4, 2021 1:44 PM

I guessed Meals on Wheels for FJ.

Andrew has a fun personality and attitude, would like to see him without the beard.

by Anonymousreply 438December 4, 2021 1:49 PM
I found the smartest professors seemed to lack a lot of social skills

You mean like 90% of all Jeopardy contestants?

by Anonymousreply 439December 4, 2021 3:19 PM

Andrew reminded me a lot of my first bf.

by Anonymousreply 440December 5, 2021 12:33 AM

I follow Buzzy Cohen on Twitter and saw that he had retweeted something Amy posted that seemed interesting. I couldn't find the thread when I went back to read it later, but I was successful when I searched "Amy Schneider Edibles." 🌿🥴

I guessed Cubism for FJ, and was stumped by a lot of the earlier questions too. I give Hester a scarlet A for Applauding herself at least twice.

Why, when they can find well-tailored jackets for Ken, can they not do the same for Mayim?

Good game. I liked Gary a lot. Hester irritated me for numerous reasons, including applauding herself.

I guessed Impressionism for Final.

by Anonymousreply 445December 7, 2021 5:35 AM

Mayim is awesome as host

by Anonymousreply 446December 7, 2021 7:35 AM

I preferred Gautam myself, finding Gary slightly annoying.

by Anonymousreply 447December 7, 2021 11:43 AM

For college professors, all three of them appeared hesitant and not very knowledgeable.

by Anonymousreply 448December 7, 2021 1:06 PM

Don't think I want to hear her perspective on Moby Dick. Nor see how the chemistry professor teaches with games and dances.

by Anonymousreply 449December 7, 2021 1:12 PM

The universe of professors wanting to appear on Jeopardy is not large, I imagine.

by Anonymousreply 450December 7, 2021 1:51 PM

I read Moby Dick in high school. The teacher told us which chapters to skip because they had nothing to do with the story. One that I remember was an entire chapter on the sperm whale's tail.

by Anonymousreply 451December 7, 2021 2:15 PM

The teacher who told you to skip significant chapters of Moby Dick probably taught phys ed, too.

by Anonymousreply 452December 7, 2021 3:02 PM

Hester's guessing "Who are the Summers Sisters" instead of the Pointer Sisters suggests she is not a DLer...

by Anonymousreply 453December 7, 2021 6:51 PM

So true r453.

Donna didn't have sisters. And didn't need any either!

by Anonymousreply 454December 7, 2021 7:20 PM
Donna didn't have sisters. And didn't need any either!

Wrong R454,

Donna did have sisters. Two of them Mary Ellen and Dara were her back up singers for years. Mary Ellen (to Donna's right) in particular was with her to the end.

that photo looks completely photoshopped together.

by Anonymousreply 456December 7, 2021 7:47 PM

Not the most impressive lot of contestants. I did get final.

by Anonymousreply 457December 8, 2021 12:00 AM

I liked John from Howard U. Sorry he lost so much on Final, making it unlikely he'll get a wild card spot.

Had no idea on Final.

by Anonymousreply 458December 8, 2021 9:33 AM

I'm just not warming up to this Professors Tournament.

by Anonymousreply 459December 8, 2021 10:19 PM

Final was obvious to me right away - surprised none of them could get it.

by Anonymousreply 460December 9, 2021 12:07 AM

I was surprised as well, especially the way the clue was worded. Gandhi was the first person to spring to mind. These professors are extremely conservative wagerers as well.

by Anonymousreply 461December 9, 2021 12:44 AM

Ken and Mayim to continue splitting hosting duties until end of season.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 462December 9, 2021 1:10 AM

Count me in as also being surprised no one got FJ.

One more thing: OMG, that hideous blouse on Mayim.

Didn't Caldor used to sell clothing that looked like that?

by Anonymousreply 463December 9, 2021 1:15 AM

Gandhi was an easy FJ.

Yeah, the Profs aren't really very good, are they?

by Anonymousreply 464December 9, 2021 2:39 AM

Sam was pretty sharp, especially with those triple rhymes--I couldn't even get the first word, let alone all three, by the time he'd answered. And his reply to Mayim's question about his fanboy cheer was delivered with a perfect deadpan: "It's on the inside."

I did get Michael Chabon, Tigray, Huawei, and Multiplicity.

by Anonymousreply 465December 9, 2021 3:18 AM

FJ was embarrassingly easy.

Lisa's "MLK" response was especially stupid since he died four years after Gen. MacArthur.

by Anonymousreply 466December 9, 2021 11:00 AM

I got Tigray, with Chabon being one of those "I know who they're going for, but I'm blanking on the name" deals. Are teachers eligible for the Tournament of Champions along with the regular players? If so, I can definitely see Sam in the mix.

by Anonymousreply 467December 9, 2021 11:08 AM

I won't watch these idiots compete.

"Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach and get tenure".

by Anonymousreply 468December 9, 2021 4:39 PM

I liked Wednesday's mix of professors better than the three on Tuesday. Especially Sam.

Mayim made reference to the winner of the Professor's Tournament playing in the Tournament of Champions. It surprised me, but she said it. Have the Teacher's Tournament champs played in the TOC in the past? What about the college student tournament champ?

Yes, I knew Gandhi was the answer to Final before Mayim even finished reading the clue.

by Anonymousreply 469December 9, 2021 4:43 PM

Yes, both Teacher's Tournament and College Tournament winners get to be in TOC.

In fact I remember a cute college winner being one of the three finalists several years ago.

by Anonymousreply 470December 9, 2021 7:22 PM

Ed was impressive, the others not so much. Realized with a Colorado question they were going for colombine, though didn't recognize the flower from the photo. Final came to me after the buzzer.

Unlike Mayim, I understood that the woman taught in a technical school which didn't grant any sort of liberal arts degrees, even though they offered some liberal arts courses.

by Anonymousreply 471December 10, 2021 12:03 AM

Overall, the breadth of knowledge among the professors so far has been very unimpressive.

When one of them responded "Newton" to an Apple clue the other day when the obvious correct response was "Steve Jobs", I couldn't believe it.

by Anonymousreply 472December 10, 2021 12:42 AM

Mayim is still talking as if she's teaching a kindergarten class.

by Anonymousreply 473December 10, 2021 3:07 AM

Ed was handsome in a professorial way and had a great smile. Interesting that even with very conservative wagers he managed to pull off such a runaway win, by far the biggest of the week so far. He seemed to have a pretty broad range of knowledge too, which should help in the finals. I missed those Twilight and Pride & Prejudice stumpers in the Literary Bad Choices category, and What Does It Prevent? had me completely confused...

by Anonymousreply 474December 10, 2021 4:16 AM

How about the American history professor answering House of Representatives for House of Commons?

by Anonymousreply 475December 10, 2021 5:01 AM

Was that last night, or the night before? That was a true cringe-worthy moment.

by Anonymousreply 476December 10, 2021 12:03 PM

So many losing contestants eliminate themselves by betting it all and going down to 0. The wild cards this time around might be people with low scores...some may be only four digits.

by Anonymousreply 477December 10, 2021 3:20 PM

Ed was impresive. By far the best we've seen in the Professor's Tournament.

I guessed the interstate highway system for Final since it was started in the 1950s, but assumed it was wrong due to the wording of the clue.

by Anonymousreply 478December 10, 2021 3:30 PM

Oppps, r478 is from me, Johnny Gilbert

by Anonymousreply 479December 10, 2021 3:35 PM

Here's how the contestants are shaping up as we move along toward the tournament.

Monday: Gary Hollis, $20,000

Tuesday: Marti Canipe, $13,400

Wednesday: Sam Buttrey, $22,400

Thursday: Ed Hashima, $32,100

WILD CARD SLOTS:

1. Katie Reed, $12,000

2. Hester Blum, $12,000

3. John Harkless, $4,000,

4. Julia Williams, $3,800,

5. Gautam Hans, $1

6. Lisa Dresner, $0

7. Ashley Lawrence-Sanders, $0

8. Ramón Guerra, $0

by Anonymousreply 480December 10, 2021 3:35 PM

I didn't "know", St. Lawrence Seaway, but it was the only possible answer to me. I do live in Wisconsin, however, so maybe that made it more obvious.

by Anonymousreply 481December 10, 2021 10:49 PM

People used to talk about the St. Lawrence Seaway when I was a kid. Now it is forgotten.

by Anonymousreply 482December 11, 2021 5:00 AM

Close game. All three deserved their spots in the finals. The personable tall guy looked about 7 feet high on my screen. I just read "Frankenstein" for the first time a few months ago, otherwise I wouldn't have guessed Shelley.

by Anonymousreply 483December 11, 2021 5:46 AM

Good game on Friday, with three knowledgeable players who all made the semi-finals.

by Anonymousreply 484December 11, 2021 8:18 AM

Best game of the professor's tournament! Wish every Jeopardy game was this exciting! Glad all three made it to finals..

Had no idea on Final.

by Anonymousreply 485December 11, 2021 9:39 AM

Agreed that yesterday's cliffhanger final was the opposite of the tedious James/Matt steamrolling. I knew that Shelley's mother was a writer - were there many other women in the 1700s?

The ones the losers knocked out were basically the best of a leftover weak lot. Here's to five close games next week!

by Anonymousreply 486December 11, 2021 12:22 PM

That was really cool that all 3 got into the next round and how they found out at that moment. Too bad that Covid rules prevented them from giving each other high-fives or hand shakes, as you could see they wanted to.

by Anonymousreply 487December 11, 2021 12:42 PM

FJ was about there were 19th century. And there were quite a few women to choose from.

by Anonymousreply 488December 11, 2021 12:54 PM

That tall guy must be [bold]really[/bold] tall because I think shorter people on Jeopardy are elevated a little to make the difference in height seem less pronounced.

In contrast, he stood out like a giant exclamation point.

I did get a kick out of his referring to "my most excellent wing span."

by Anonymousreply 489December 11, 2021 2:19 PM

R489, In other words, he has a wide stance like Senator Larry Craig.

by Anonymousreply 490December 11, 2021 2:28 PM

Last night for our local Saturday rerun episode they had one of Matt's many steamrolling adventures. Reminded me of why I eventually came to dislike him as a contestant, couldn't take more than a few minutes before switching off the program.

by Anonymousreply 491December 12, 2021 12:21 PM

Another competitive game to kick off the semi-finals.

J. P. is a lot of fun, but he must exhaust his friends.

by Anonymousreply 492December 13, 2021 8:25 PM

Great game, though I'm glad hot daddy Sam won.

Fell into the Mary QoS trap myself, though I did get dint and sherry, which the brainiacs didn't know.

by Anonymousreply 493December 14, 2021 12:02 AM

Like many of us, I immediately thought Mary Queen of Scots, but then realized the date they gave was way too late for her.

by Anonymousreply 494December 14, 2021 12:28 AM

Sorry, but as soon as I saw the date 1707, I knew that it had to be Queen Anne.

by Anonymousreply 495December 14, 2021 2:36 AM

Three very impressive contestants: the "no wrong answers" first round was amazing. Some impossible categories for me, like Chemistry, but I did know Queen Anne.

by Anonymousreply 496December 14, 2021 3:18 AM

Great game. I love it when it truly competitive like that! I was rooting for any of them to win, but not surprised it was Sam.

I knew that Final wasn't Mary Queen of Scotts. She's the Elizabeth I era. However, I didn't know Queen Anne.

by Anonymousreply 497December 14, 2021 3:22 PM

I had no idea of final, but physics is not something I know much about. On the other hand, I knew the Massachusetts counties immediately, as I was born in one as a resident of the other. Also came up with motorcycle, Lime, Glorious Revolution, and Zapata (not Zapatista).

by Anonymousreply 498December 15, 2021 12:00 AM

At least one of them should have known Henry Fonda.

Sly Stallone and the Family Stone!!!

Not even a guess for FJ.

by Anonymousreply 499December 15, 2021 1:11 AM

I knew I was toast with FJ as soon as I saw the category was Physics... This was the opposite of last night's game: a runaway win and many unanswered questions and incorrect answers. I liked Marti and her raptor anecdote: she started OK but couldn't gain any traction.

by Anonymousreply 500December 15, 2021 4:09 AM

A ho-hum game after Monday's exciting game. Didn't especially like any of the players, so wasn't rooting for anyone, compared to Monday where I liked them all and was rooting for all three.

I guessed sub atomic particles for Final. Only thing I could think of. Oh well. At least one of the contestants thought the same thing.

by Anonymousreply 501December 15, 2021 3:40 PM

Strange thing about the Massachusetts -folk counties... Norfolk is south of Suffolk County. There are also two -sex counties... Essex and Middlesex.

by Anonymousreply 502December 15, 2021 8:32 PM

NJ has Middlesex & Essex Counties as well (along with a Sussex County).

by Anonymousreply 503December 15, 2021 9:44 PM

Well, messed up thinking they meant South Dakota.

Knew lapidary regarding gems/rocks. Saw "Wit" featuring Kathleen Chalfant back in the day - my ex was in tears when the lights came up at the end. Qi starts with W?

I would soooooo date Ed!

by Anonymousreply 504December 16, 2021 12:02 AM

I lamely guessed Arizona for FJ. Ed wasn't as sharp as he was on Friday; I think it's Professor Sam for the win.

by Anonymousreply 505December 16, 2021 3:39 AM

Had no idea on Final. I figured it wasn't something as obvious as Texas (uf so, we would have heard about it extensively). But didn't think it was anything as obscure as North Dakota.

I like all three of the finalists, but suspect Ed will be the one who wins it all based on his previous performance . We'll see.

Anyone know what's happening on the show next week? Back to regular play with Amy? Or will they do repeats during Christmas?

by Anonymousreply 506December 16, 2021 3:31 PM

My bet is on Sam rather than Ed; fairly certain Amy returns Monday (with Ken).

by Anonymousreply 507December 16, 2021 3:38 PM

I narrowed my choice for the final answer to Montana, Wyoming and Colorado, didn't think anyone was from North Dakota.

by Anonymousreply 508December 16, 2021 3:41 PM

Wow! Too early in the morning here in LA.

I meant to say I think SAM will be the big winner based on his previous performance. He seemed the most solid player of the bunch.

by Anonymousreply 509December 16, 2021 3:41 PM

Not surprised to see Sam doing so well. I thought of Java, but had never heard of Java Sea itself. Did know about onions and muezzin though.

by Anonymousreply 510December 17, 2021 1:01 AM

The muezzin was a-standing On the radiator grill….

by Anonymousreply 511December 17, 2021 1:28 AM

I guessed Sea of Borneo, which I can't find on a map... oops.

by Anonymousreply 512December 17, 2021 4:03 AM

Glad to see the promo with Amy announcing her return on Monday.

This Professors Tournament has been dull.

by Anonymousreply 513December 17, 2021 4:24 AM

Ho-hum first game of finals. Was hoping it would be more exciting. Not at all surprised Sam is doing so well.

I knew Final wasn't South China Sea, but didn't know the name Java Sea. I guess Indonesian Sea.

by Anonymousreply 514December 17, 2021 5:20 AM

I narrowed it down to Celebes Sea and Java Sea, and since Jakarta is on Java, it made sense. I can see The South China Sea would possibly be a good guess.

by Anonymousreply 515December 17, 2021 12:49 PM

I guessed Java because of a MST3K joke, "This is Rita Braver reporting from Krakatoa, East of Java."

Did everyone catch Amy's preferred pronoun in the promo for their return next week?

I really, really want to see Sam give Matt a run for his money!

Did not get final, although I did know Taliesen, as well as figuring out that "hilt" in the clue meant Excalibur.

by Anonymousreply 517December 18, 2021 1:08 AM

I guessed Seraut , but would have misspelled his name badly. The Latin category was hard, and Sam really impressed there. Throughout the tournament I was surprised how low the professorial wagers were...never "all in".

by Anonymousreply 518December 18, 2021 5:18 AM

]quote]I really, really want to see Sam give Matt a run for his money!

Yes! Would love for Sam to beat Matt in the Tournament of Champions.

Well, the professor's tournament was less than thrilling, but it was an interesting diversion.

Go Sam! Glad he was the winner.

Had no clue about Final.

by Anonymousreply 519December 18, 2021 9:34 AM

Sam, Matt and Amy together for the two-dayToC final would be something, indeed!

by Anonymousreply 520December 18, 2021 11:37 AM

For those of you who might be interested, Matty gave me a Tesla for Christmas.

Jeopardy apparently is doing very well in the ratings this season.

A bidding war for the show may be in the works

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 522December 20, 2021 5:10 PM

Since the LA Times story is likely paywalled for many of you, I've copied the text below.

Last summer, the beloved game show “Jeopardy!” was getting pummeled with bad publicity over a botched search for a new host.

But Sony Pictures Television’s stumbles trying to find a successor to the late Alex Trebek did not seem to matter much to “Jeopardy!” fans. In the current 2021-22 television season, the program is averaging 9.1 million viewers, up 6% compared to last year, according to Nielsen data.

So far this season, the audience for “Jeopardy!” has surpassed that for every prime-time broadcast entertainment show, including NBC’s “The Voice.” It’s been a bigger draw than the Grammy Awards; and its crowd nearly equals the turnout for this year’s Oscars telecast. Only NFL football telecasts and other major live sporting events consistently perform better.

The program’s resilience at a time when traditional TV audiences are shrinking has not gone unnoticed. While Disney/ABC has aired “Jeopardy!” on its owned TV stations since 1984, competitors ViacomCBS and NBCUniversal have discussed making a play to get the legendary game show and “Wheel of Fortune” for their major-market TV stations, according to several network and studio executives who were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

The intense interest is setting up a dynamic next year for an old-fashioned network bidding war among buyers looking for an edge for their stations as they compete for a diminishing pool of viewers.

“Jeopardy!” and “Wheel” are syndicated on TV stations across the country. ABC has long had the rights to the show in the country’s five largest TV markets, including on its Los Angeles outlet KABC, WABC in New York and KGO in San Francisco.

“Everybody wants it,” said one high-level entertainment executive.

Disney/ABC would like to hold on to the programs for its stations even while the Burbank entertainment giant’s priority is growing its streaming platforms, Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+, people familiar with the matter said.

ABC-owned TV stations have the rights to “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune” in their markets through the 2022-23 season — paying around $1 million per week. Negotiations and a decision on where the two shows go are months away, but potential contenders have informally expressed interest and held internal discussions on what it will take to claim the prize.

The shows are produced by Sony Pictures Television and distributed to TV stations by CBS Media Ventures. Representatives for both companies declined comment for this story.

“Jeopardy!” has always been an attractive programming property, as it’s the highest-rated syndicated game show on TV. But its stature in recent years has been enhanced by the state of the rest of the television landscape, where traditional viewing outside of live sports has eroded rapidly.

The rise of streaming video has siphoned viewers away from traditional TV, diminishing the number of options outside of live sports that can change the fortunes of a network. The ability of “Jeopardy!” to feed a massive audience into a network’s primetime lineup enhances its value.

“Because of its timelessness, it’s a safe bet,” said Bill Hague, executive vice president of the media consulting firm Magid. “It’s as much of a sure thing as you can get.”

For ViacomCBS, the game shows also could be a draw for its streaming service Paramount+, which offers a feed of local CBS stations to subscribers.

“Jeopardy!” took a pounding in the press in August after Sony turned to Mike Richards, the show’s executive producer, as host. Some viewers were upset, questioning whether the search was rigged because Richards appeared to have the inside track. Richards ended up hosting only a handful of shows before stepping down after it was revealed he had made inappropriate comments on a podcast and was a defendant in two sexual harassment lawsuits.

The drama, following a parade of celebrity fill-ins who were supposedly auditioning for the job, was not well received.

by Anonymousreply 523December 20, 2021 5:12 PM

Part 2 of LA Times story:

To mop up the mess, Sony handed the reins to Ken Jennings and Mayim Bialik, who are committed to the program for the rest of the current season. Sony executives, according to insiders, have been studying the ratings, mulling whether to pick Jennings or Bialik or continue the tag-team approach. A less attractive option is to begin the search anew.

Despite the clumsy hand-off, the game show where contestants provide quiz answers in the form of a question has remained a TV fixture since it was created in 1964 by big band singer turned talk show host Merv Griffin. While Trebek became a pop culture icon during his 37 years as host, he was never the main attraction.

“Alex Trebek used to say that ‘Jeopardy!’ was popular because of the game and the contestants, not because of him,” said Claire McNear, author of “Answers in the Form of Questions: A Definitive History and Insider’s Guide to Jeopardy!” “Even as this has been a tumultuous year for ‘Jeopardy!,’ the basic format is still there: 61 clues, three contestants, and a game that’s always been designed to be played along with from home.”

McNear believes the attention on guest hosts and the controversy that followed may have rekindled the interest of people who had fallen out of the habit of watching the show. (The incumbent, Disney/ABC, would like to avoid any more controversy and is said to want approval over the permanent host in its next deal.)

The current season of “Jeopardy!” also has been buoyed by the winning streaks of champion contestant Matt Amodio, whose string of 38 victories is second to Jennings’, the all-time champ. The show also made history with Amy Schneider, the first transgender contestant to make the Tournament of Champions, where top winners from each season compete.

“Players like that create a ton of buzz and inevitably draw attention toward the show,” said McNear.

While “Jeopardy!” is bound to have some aggressive suitors when negotiations heat up next year, there are risks in moving it to new outlets.

ABC’s TV stations have the highest ratings among broadcasters in the nation’s top markets thanks to strong local news operations. Those stations also have “ABC World News Tonight With David Muir” — the most-watched network evening newscast — leading into “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune” on several of ABC’s outlets.

Even if Sony and CBS Media Ventures can get a higher license fee for “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel,” moving them to lower-rated NBC, CBS or Fox stations could cut into the ad revenue generated by the shows.

Sony and CBS retain two minutes of ad time along with paid promotional announcements on each program that are sold to national advertisers.

Some executives who have gone through past renewal negotiations for “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune” said they would bet against the programs moving due to the potential risk in disrupting the tune-in habit of a largely older audience.

Fox Television Stations made a serious run for the shows the last time they became available. But one executive familiar with the last round of discussions who was not authorized to comment publicly said company officials never truly believed ABC would let the pair go.

“It’s too valuable as lead-in to their prime time,” the executive said. “There are certain things station groups don’t do, and one them is that you let one of the top shows go to a direct competitor. It does not happen in the big markets.”

by Anonymousreply 524December 20, 2021 5:14 PM

Thank you Johnny Gilbert!

by Anonymousreply 525December 20, 2021 7:06 PM

Amy is back, looking especially dowdy.

I guessed Brenda Starr for FJ.

by Anonymousreply 526December 20, 2021 8:24 PM

Me too!

by Anonymousreply 527December 21, 2021 12:48 AM

Ha, I guessed Brenda Starr too..... how weird.

I don't see how Amy is going to lose. The percentage of right answers for FJ is indicative of the breadth of her knowledge.

by Anonymousreply 528December 21, 2021 2:46 AM

She’s good, but many of her FJs have been fairly easy. I thought Lois Lane was obvious.

by Anonymousreply 529December 21, 2021 2:54 AM

I missed the obvious, and felt pretty stupid.

This is Ozma of Oz, referred to by Amy.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 530December 21, 2021 3:15 AM

Eventually they all lose. Thankfully.

I’m more than ready to see Amy move along.

by Anonymousreply 531December 21, 2021 4:14 AM

I’m ready for a new champ too R531, but I don’t dislike Amy like I did Matt Amodio. Matt was a pain in the ass.

by Anonymousreply 532December 21, 2021 4:18 AM

The two week break for the Professor's Tournament was good in that it also gave audiences a break from Amy.

I was beginning to be tired of her prior to the tournament, but thanks to the tournament break and time away from her, I didn't find myself weary of her tonight. Actually felt good to see someone familiar in the show. My opinion might change as soon as tomorrow, but tonight I was glad to see her and glad she won.

I also guessed Brenda Starr for Final. Should have known Lois Lane from the 1938 clue.

Frankly I was thinking Brenda Starr was likely too obscure for the majority of the Jeopardy audience. Wikipedia says the comic strip ended in 2011, but only ran in 55 newspapers toward the end of its run.

by Anonymousreply 533December 21, 2021 5:55 AM

Had no idea that Lois Lane won a fictional Pulitzer.

by Anonymousreply 534December 21, 2021 11:02 AM

Knew FJ only because I was born and raised in Massachusetts.

Thanks Mom and Dad!

by Anonymousreply 535December 21, 2021 11:39 PM

Guessed final from the three names clue, also knew Panama hats are from Ecuador.

Amy does know a lot, but not so much a challenger can't bring her down.

by Anonymousreply 536December 22, 2021 12:01 AM

Amy is helped greatly by the DDs, as was Matt.

by Anonymousreply 537December 22, 2021 1:36 AM

Louisa Mae Alcott popped into my mind the moment they ANNOUNCED the Final category.

And when they read they clue, I couldn't think of a better answer, so I stuck with her.

Imagine my surprise when that turned out to the be correct answer!!

by Anonymousreply 538December 22, 2021 5:20 AM

Should have guessed LMA right away. She's another of the frequently used staples used by the writers.

by Anonymousreply 539December 22, 2021 11:07 AM

I thought of Brenda, I just couldn't remember Starr. I was A Superman comic book buff, and never knew Lois Lane won a Pulitzer.

by Anonymousreply 540December 22, 2021 3:52 PM

I turned off tonight's game after about six minutes. Can't stand to see Amy win any more.

On a related note, does anyone here have a theory as to why there have been SO MANY long-lasting champions in recent years as compared to the past? And when exactly did they change the rule that a champ had to leave after five wins?

by Anonymousreply 541December 22, 2021 11:20 PM

Oh, yay! Yet another boring, runaway game where the outcome, early on, is a foregone conclusion. 🙄

by Anonymousreply 542December 22, 2021 11:53 PM

Jeopardy made the change letting champions stay until they were defeated in 2003.

by Anonymousreply 543December 22, 2021 11:58 PM

Although I didn't get final, I did know about Olivia Munn solely from Datalounge!

by Anonymousreply 544December 23, 2021 12:25 AM

I guessed "Horseracing", which is much closer than I usually get with sports questions, but still wrong...

I liked the color of Ken's suit.

by Anonymousreply 545December 23, 2021 3:46 AM

Have to agree with R541, Amy's winning streak has become boring and monotonous.

by Anonymousreply 546December 23, 2021 4:01 AM

Thanks for that, R543. That was almost 20 years ago. So, have any pundits weighed in on why there have been so many long-lasting champions in recent years? Sometimes lately it has seemed that we've gone almost directly from one long-lasting champion to another, with only brief breaks in between.

by Anonymousreply 547December 23, 2021 1:39 PM

I suspect, R547, that the producers like the buzz generated by these lengthy, multi-day winners. It makes for good TV — up to a point. I have no clue if the producers manipulate which contestants are chosen for each day to keep a streak going, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they do.

by Anonymousreply 548December 23, 2021 3:55 PM
I have no clue if the producers manipulate which contestants are chosen for each day to keep a streak going, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they do.

I've wondered about that myself.

by Anonymousreply 549December 23, 2021 4:03 PM

Wouldn't that be unethical?

by Anonymousreply 550December 23, 2021 4:26 PM

Wednesday was indeed a boring game. Not only was it a runaway early on, many of the questions were boring to me. I had no idea on Final and didn't even try to guess at it. just like Amy didn't either.

I suspect we've had so many long running champs in the past two years because in 2019, James Holzhauer showed them how to do it via going for all the $1,000 clues first, then all the $800 clues, betting it all on the Daily Doubles, etc. You could definitely tell people like Matt Amodio and Andrew He studied James's strategy.

That's one of the reasons I still like Amy -- she doesn't follow that aggressive strategy. She starts with the $200 clues and goes through the entire category, then moves to another one. She wins purely on her knowledge, not on aggressive strategy.

by Anonymousreply 551December 23, 2021 4:27 PM

I'm still entertained by her high wire act. She makes it look so easy.

by Anonymousreply 552December 23, 2021 4:34 PM
I suspect we've had so many long running champs in the past two years because in 2019, James Holzhauer showed them how to do it via going for all the $1,000 clues first, then all the $800 clues, betting it all on the Daily Doubles, etc. You could definitely tell people like Matt Amodio and Andrew He studied James's strategy.

Sorry, this makes zero sense to me. If you don't have the knowledge, it doesn't matter in the slightest which clues you go for first, how much you bet on the Daily Doubles, etc.. Amy has proven this, as you yourself acknowledged. In recent years, several contestants seem to have had the combination of encyclopedic knowledge and good buzzer technique that has led to long winning streaks, but what I don't understand is why this has happened so much more frequently in recent years than it did previously.

by Anonymousreply 553December 23, 2021 5:10 PM

As knowledgeable as Amy is, she's been aided by weak competition.

Just from the introductions, it's not hard to tell if it's going to be another runaway game for Amy.

by Anonymousreply 554December 23, 2021 5:11 PM

Maybe the reason is the constant daily bombardment of non-essential information on social media, which incidentally, is knowledge these kind of shows exist on.

by Anonymousreply 555December 23, 2021 7:51 PM

I got steeplechase and was surprised Amy didn't.

by Anonymousreply 556December 23, 2021 8:06 PM

I think the reverse order strategy does favor the champ, because while the challengers are getting used to the buzzer system, the champ is building an early lead. They then have more money to wager on the Daily Doubles.

by Anonymousreply 557December 23, 2021 9:32 PM

BORING. Yet again. 🙄 Another runaway game.

Would have loved to see more of Dr. Andrew, but alas that was never going to happen.

And I despise the way Ken Jennings gushes over Amy every chance that he gets. Give it a rest.

by Anonymousreply 558December 23, 2021 11:56 PM
And I despise the way Ken Jennings gushes over Amy every chance that he gets.

Funny, I see that as almost passive aggressive - "you're good Amy, but you'll never match MY accomplishments."

by Anonymousreply 559December 24, 2021 4:47 PM

Maybe I'm cynical, but I see that as trying to show how accepting he is as LDS?

by Anonymousreply 560December 24, 2021 7:26 PM

My understanding is the opening that Ken/Amy says is WRITTEN for them. They may ad lib a little, but they're following the script, which is what they are paid to do as host.

I had no idea on FInal on Thursday. It was a strangely worded.

Look forward to the Christmas Eve episode.

by Anonymousreply 561December 24, 2021 9:41 PM

FJ was easy. Amy had a bad day.

by Anonymousreply 562December 25, 2021 4:44 PM

I had no idea on Final.

Yes, Amy had a bad day, starting with the choice of outfits. A gray sweatshirt with a high neck and a front zipper is Ill advised for any appearing on a national game show.

by Anonymousreply 563December 25, 2021 8:08 PM

I find a tie under a crew neck sweater = why bother?

by Anonymousreply 564December 25, 2021 8:11 PM

Monday. December 27.

Sigh. 🙄

by Anonymousreply 565December 27, 2021 11:57 PM

The mental image of Amy soaking in a tub with her girlfriend is one I could live without.

FJ was easy for me, an elder theatre geek.

by Anonymousreply 566December 28, 2021 12:01 AM

Was rooting for the zaftig lady in the middle. Best I could do for Final was Rhinoceros.

Waiting for Godot left a lot of audiences scratching their heads.

At 18:50, one of the stars of the original Broadway production, Bert Lahr, admits he didn’t even know what it was about.

I got FJ even though I've neither seen nor read it.

That top Amy wore tonight did her no favors.

And I can't emphasize enough that I could've done without her tub story as well.

by Anonymousreply 570December 28, 2021 1:07 AM

I got FJ because I read it and have seen it twice.

I think Amy wants a second bathtub, not a bigger one.

by Anonymousreply 571December 28, 2021 2:31 AM

She made it clear that it was two tubs, so that they wouldn't have to alternate usage.

She seems to be heading for Matt's fate of starting to show cracks in the invincibility until a new champ finally breaks through.

Amy has always been somewhat fashion challenged. But the outfits she's worn the last few episodes have been especially unflattering, tending to lean toward more masculine looking.

Had no idea on Final, but I'm not especially a theatre queen.

by Anonymousreply 573December 28, 2021 7:17 PM

If Amy wins tonight (Tuesday), she will have 20 consecutive wins and move into 4th place for the most consecutive games won. At 20 games, she will be tied with Julia Collins, who won in 2014.

Looks like the Julia Sweater worked

by Anonymousreply 575December 29, 2021 12:22 AM

I am so bored with Amy.

A Jeopardy! viewer for years, I now DVR it and only watch FJ.

by Anonymousreply 576December 29, 2021 12:25 AM
Maybe I'm cynical, but I see that as trying to show how accepting he is as LDS?

Latter Day Saints?

The Arno would've been my 5th or 6th choice. Good for her.

by Anonymousreply 577December 29, 2021 3:24 AM

I guessed the Po for FJ. I missed "Forgery" too. They were all impressive, but Amy is hard to catch.

by Anonymousreply 578December 29, 2021 3:54 AM

Yes, LDS as in Mormon

All I could think of was Yangtze, though I knew it wasn't likely.

by Anonymousreply 579December 29, 2021 10:27 AM

I guessed Po, thinking it flowed through Florence. An Amy, James, and Ken series would be epic.

by Anonymousreply 580December 29, 2021 2:38 PM

Playing against Amy should scare the stuffing out of Matt when they face each other.

by Anonymousreply 581December 29, 2021 3:10 PM

The first river to come to mind was the Arno. Remember, this was in 1966. It's never happened again, so someone reinforced those museums, and built up the river banks. Although, I considered the Seine before the answer was revealed.

by Anonymousreply 582December 29, 2021 4:07 PM

Amy’s worn her sweater honoring Julia before, on an episode last week. It may look nice in person. Looks like a sweatshirt on TV. Not flattering at all.

I guessed the Seine fir Final, but figured it was too obvious

by Anonymousreply 583December 29, 2021 6:57 PM

Yeah, the sweatshirt look makes her look like a PE teacher in junior high school. Miss Beulah Middleton, who lives with the perky English teacher, Madge Diamondsen.

by Anonymousreply 584December 29, 2021 7:00 PM

I object to your stereotyping female P.E. teachers. Some of us were hotter than the students.

R585 Well, not in my middle school.

by Anonymousreply 586December 29, 2021 7:17 PM

I had no luck with FJ, in spite of it being obvious (in hindsight). I did get the 20th Century Limited/Chicago question because of the movie.

Where's the serious competition for Amy?

by Anonymousreply 587December 30, 2021 3:53 AM

Amy nearly showed cleavage tonight.

Va-va-voom!

FJ was rather obvious.

by Anonymousreply 588December 30, 2021 7:12 AM

I didn't get final either, guessing Los Angeles. Was surprised Amy couldn't immediately associate clue Eastern Cape with South Africa, nor Babe Ruth Didrickson (to use a game show convention). I did get Franklin Pierce, Joyce Carol Oates, and Kathy Hochul (another Amy miss where she's all about anything pertaining to The X Team).

by Anonymousreply 589December 30, 2021 12:48 PM

I don’t really have anything of value to post in this thread, so I’ll refrain.

by Anonymousreply 590December 30, 2021 5:05 PM

^ooops, dammit

by Anonymousreply 591December 30, 2021 5:06 PM

R589, Amy didn’t have a chance on Babe Dedrickson or Kathy Hocul as those were DDs that the other contestants chose.

by Anonymousreply 592December 30, 2021 6:25 PM

Hochul wasn't a Daily Double.

by Anonymousreply 593December 30, 2021 6:29 PM

Hocul? Hoskul? Hokil.? I wouldn’t have answered it either.

by Anonymousreply 594December 30, 2021 6:48 PM

It’s actually Hochul.

by Anonymousreply 595December 30, 2021 6:55 PM

I knew what Final was referring to, but drew a blank on the name of the ship. I knew it began with a C, but couldn't think of the name Carpathia.

by Anonymousreply 596December 30, 2021 9:27 PM

Since we're almost at the end of this thread, a reminder that someone (not me) started a thread #27 a few weeks back.

Here's the link. See you there!

Thanks, Doll.

by Anonymousreply 598December 30, 2021 9:30 PM

Do they deliberately pick the slow and the brainless to compete against the champion until they tire of the champion?

by Anonymousreply 599January 4, 2022 1:02 AM

Amy amassed $42K without hitting one DD.

FJ was another easy one tonight.

Harsh was not at all harsh on the eyes.
