Thank you OP for the new thread!
I hope our poster in Romania stays safe after reading his post at the end of the last thread

Same here, R2--the current Top 3/Top 4 are the most obnoxious ever to blight the height of the tennis rankings.

[quote] The nominations have been announced for the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Here are the six names: Ana Ivanovic Lisa Raymond Cara Black Flávia Pennetta Juan Carlos Ferrero Carlos Moya Who do we think SHOULD get in, and who WILL get in?
Whenever I see the name Carlos Moya I remember is a post from a prior DL tennis thread that described how one of his tennis player ex-girlfriends (was it Flavia Pennetta?) said all he did was masturbate and play videos games.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | October 16, 2021 8:32 PM |
R4 yes it was Pennetta and then he cheated on her with someone in Switzerland. That of course led to their breakup
I don't think Pennetta belongs in the Hall of Fame but it would be amusing if she and Moya were both in the same class

R1 I know that I'm coming across like an asshole but Romania isn't the world leader in covid deaths proportionate to population. That dubious honour goes to Peru. Romania is currently at 22 in the world that way.

Hsieh-Mertens win the women's doubles. Both Hsieh and Mertens (separately) have won the Indian Wells doubles title before so it's indeed a case of the best teaming up.

Norrie bringing back the early 00s trend of players going on court with a lot of sunblock visible on the nose and under the eyes. Kournikova used to do that and she still has good skin today

Nadal and Djokovic are old cats whose best days are behind them, R42. Djokovic is still licking his wounds from the Olympics and his straight-sets loss in the USO finals. Nadal is looking increasingly vulnerable. I bet '22 will be the end of their dominance.

Thanks r6. The Branch Covidian (r400 last thread) should plan his escape from deadly Romania immediately. ... you in danger gurl!!... Australia would be the absolute perfect destination for him. He'd totally love our 5km from home lockdown restrictions! And no tennis (per Dictator Dan) because of it's covid lethality. Not to mention our current selection of stylish anti-Rona PPE available here. Utterly fabulous!

A great year for Norrie. He's just displaced Evans as British number one and is on course to join Henman and Murray as the only Brits to win 50+ matches in a year (he's currently on 46). If he wins Indian Wells, he shoots up the rankings again to no. 16 and would be in with a chance of the ATP finals.

R44 = anti-vaxxer and right-winger like R377. Yeah, I hear the ambulances day and night and am in the middle of it. I also have severe asthma and pretty much stay in and work all day. Just in this city 4 vaccinated people have died in 24 hours and 60 non-vaccinated. This month, we lost 2 colleagues, including a pregnant 26 year-old with gestational diabetes. And no, we aren't going to Australia, but we are looking at places in Paris because we need to be in the EU. You may laugh, but when you see the desperation of the medical personnel and families, you may stop.

2 interesting qualification results today in Antwerp:
Herbert def. Rune 6-3 6-4
Nakashima def. Verdasco 6-4 2-6 6-3 Nakashima is very talented as he's shown this year but I think Verdasco is nearing the end of his career. You don't want to be qualifying for events in your late 30s when most of your career was spent with a ranking in the top 50. That has to be a massive blow to his ego and especially to lose in the first round even if his opponent is someone poised to be a future top player.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | October 17, 2021 7:11 PM |
I think Rune is feeling tired after so many matches, that or the fact that the last steps towards top 100 are the most difficult.
Jerry Shang won his second itf (i think it's the second he plays). Maybe he failed to get a GS after being the number one junior for most of the year but he is doing very well in his first steps as a pro
by Anonymous | reply 51 | October 17, 2021 7:16 PM |
Rune was very critic with atp ranking, he said it's detrimental to younger players.-
He should be in the top 100 with the older system (Alcaraz would be top 25).
He is right but the ranking is going to get to normal in the following months

so basically most of the points in the men's final are ending with Basilashvili pounding groundstroke winners or he's hitting himself off the court with errors.
Norrie hits with a lot of topspin and his shots seem to be just sitting up on this slow court for Basilashvili to attack

Djokovic should take the vaccine. He can energize the syringe with positive vibes in order to ensure it wont harm his body. I did this and I didn't have any side effects at all.
Djokovic talked about changing polluted water into drinkable water and toxic food into edible food with the power of the mind even as Jaferieh was nodding to the theory that is similar to Japanese pseudo-scientist Masaru Emoto's claims about changing the composition of water through thoughts.
"I've seen people and I know some people that, through that energetical [sic] transformation, through the power of prayer, through the power of gratitude, they manage to turn the most toxic food or the most polluted water, into the most healing water," Djokovic had said.

Australia couldn't care less if Nole (or Tsitsipas) don't play there. Right now the only men who have star power and Federer and Nadal. Nole is probably the best even but he lacks the charisma to atract people massively.
In fact atp needs a new star as soon as possible. Naomi, Raducanu or Gauff have more star power than any of the youngsters at atp.
It's not a problem if you have a charisma free number one (Pete Sampras was number one many years) if you have top players (Like Agassi) who attract the masses

by Anonymous | reply 134 | October 20, 2021 7:16 PM |
I think Djokovic is bipolar, and has been told all his life that he needs to take medication. He won’t do it because the highs are completely worth it; that’s when he is unbeatable. So he has his crazy belief system in which he can control everything without drugs.
by Anonymous | reply 135 | October 20, 2021 7:47 PM |
R134 he is 1 of the hottest guys on tour.
I've been disappointed in his lack of improvement the last 2 years though. It seemed a few years ago he was ready to start challenging for the big clay and slow hardcourt titles but he's stalled. Still a nice career but I hope 2022 has more in store for him. The game needs a non-European player to start winning big events. Garin is a great mover with a decent serve and groundstrokes. He doesn't have blistering power but he's not a pure grinder either.

Was never a great fan of Djokovic, but have found a new respect for him in taking a stance to to be free to make his own decisions as to his own health. Tremendous pressure on him by background forces and he is sailing through unscathed. Bravo Novak you are an inspiration on and off the court.
VAERS, and other adverse reaction tracking systems (notice how the Aussie gov has shut down reporting adverse reactions to the "vaccines" ?!?), reports that these genetic vaccines are the most dangerous vaccines ever. And they aren't really vaccines at all, and prevent nothing.

Such a bad second semester from Rublev this year. But I love Gaydrian's flat strokes and netplay. With the short take back his groundies almost look like table tennis ones.
Camila Giorgi is the only seed remaining in Tenerife 250 after round 2, lol. Such a scenic tournament setting, palm trees everywhere, a grassy field to one side of the court and shots of the mountains and water. It's a shame this event wasn't around earlier for Carlo Suarez Navarro as she is from the Canary Islands.
Sakkari has officially qualified for the YEC, the first ever Greek woman to do so (and they may be the only country to have a male and female YEC player unless Poland's duo also qualify).
Raducanu has just become the face of Dior, despite never having won a WTA match (yet).

Sakkari looked good against Halep, she was actually up 5-1 in the second set but went walkabout. She is coming for these bitches at the YEC (I think she still has most top ten wins this year already), probably just to choke in the SF or F.
Osorio Serrano is a delight to watch and actually makes tennis look fun.
Brooskby has had a great second half of the season, I wonder if he can carry this form into Australia with a surprise deep slam run (after a good off season).
Karen Hemsworth is cute (other than the teeth) but I find him so unconvincing when I watch him. He seems to either barely scrape over the line to a win, or lose quite harshly.

R180 - well, Simona is the Eastern European equivalent of a WASP. The city I am currently living in and, where the match will be held, is the ONLY city in Romania besides the capital that has an over 50% vaccination rate. Nobody without a green pass attesting to being fully vaccinated or having had COVID in the last 180 days can, as of Monday, go anywhere except to the supermarket, pharmacy, church, or doctor. Simona has been a spokesperson for the local vaccination campaign and an avid supporter of medical personnel on the frontlines. This is why my roommate says she can't believe that the first Eastern European First Lady was trash like Melania and not someone normal like Simona. Personally, I think that says more about the party and president we had than anything.

How did Boris Becker’s bankruptcy go? What did he do with all that fucking cheddar?
by Anonymous | reply 199 | October 24, 2021 2:01 AM |
Becker has now been reduced to hosting an online tennis academy, offering online tennis lessons for £39.99. The package will provide students with 10 lessons, where they will be taught "the basics of tennis". The course will be available on the topleveltennis.com website and are geared towards all levels of players. The introduction to the course reads, "The basics of tennis play a crucial role not only for amateurs but also for advanced players. Learn from the tennis legend how to fulfil your potential!"

Does he have “a” Cameo or “an” Onlyfans?
by Anonymous | reply 202 | October 24, 2021 2:25 AM |
Becker's bankruptcy was meant to last a year in 2017 but it was extended by 12 years (until 2031) when it was discovered he had hidden £4.5 million worth of assets and transactions.
Hilariously, he tried to claim diplomatic immunity from bankruptcy proceedings claiming that he was a sports ambassador for the Central African Republic (CAR) but the CAR's foreign minister said that the role didn't even exist and that Becker's CAR passport was among a number that had been stolen. :S
As for where the money went, he lost a lot to bad investments, especially questionable ones in the Nigerian oil industry. He was sued for £1.5m when his online sports company failed. Expensive relationship settlements - his first wife got £10m and a £1.8m home, while he paid a multi-million settlement to provide for a child conceived with a Russian model in London’s Nobu restaurant. Luxury homes e.g. a £5m luxury home in Wimbledon, a £1m London flat for his daughter. It goes on..

Dan Andrews likes to flex his muscle but sooner or later he will buckle under the pressure of sponsors.
After all tennis Australia tried really hard to keep AO in Australia.
There were some talks for it's temporary relocation.
More than thirty five percent men and women on tennis tours have not been vaccinated.
AO can not afford to face boycott of almost half of ATP and WTA players.

Kontaveit is having a very good season - three titles this season now. She recently switched to Dmitry Tursunov (remember him?) as her coach. Tursunov used to coach Sabalenka (aka She-hulk). He's said that he wants Kontaveit to be more aggressive.
FWIW, at the Kremlin Cup final yesterday Alexandrovna played really well for the first set and was up 4-0 in the second set - totally outclassing Kontaveit - but then acted as if her hip hurt her after every point so I think that she was effectively injured.
It's the Transylvanian Open in Romania next which I'm interested in mostly to see how Raducanu does.. I'm eager to see if her US Open win was a fluke run or not. The TO website hints to their spooky name - kinda love how it was actually a British author who had never been there who wrote Dracula, so there are all kinds of connections to be made here between Romania and Britain!

The Kontaveit / Alexandrova (sp?) match was very entertaining, they were both crushing their groundies and they both move very well. But they both also play the same game. I don't think I saw one slice or drop shot or lob and I saw the last half of the match. No variety. Grip it and rip it.

He seems to be a great coach. Kontaveit's run reminds me of Sabalenka's in 2018 where she just collected win after win despite previously struggling to keep her big shots in the court. I imagine she will be less volatile than Sabalenka too who it was rumoured had an affair with Tursonov or at least a big crush (then again she was so much younger then than Kontaveit is now so it can be understandable she was a bit harder to coach).
The final of the Transylvania Open is on Halloween! I wonder what sort of spooky WTA result the tournament has in store for us.

Yes, R225, I was just going to ask about that. I vaguely recall how some of Sabalenka's emails were leaked or something.
I think Tursonov could do better, but, I've always had an eye on him.

I just googled and he's married to someone with no background in tennis and they had a baby called Agnes born in 2019. I can imagine the women he coaches getting crushes on him though. Sabalenka said in an interview that he told her to think more tactically.

Murray defeated Hurkacz and the polish chances of getting into the nitto finals complicated a lot. Ruud could seal the deal if he does a good tournament and Sinner could be a threat too

by Anonymous | reply 236 | October 25, 2021 7:53 PM |
R235, if we factor in points dropping before Nitto, Sinner at 2930 is well behind Hurkacz at 3356 and FAA at 3196, and he's barely ahead of Norrie at 2895. Of course there's still a lot of ground for them all to cover before November 14th.

R237 The points that matter are the ones you win this year, so if doesn't matter if you lose points from previous years. In previous years the rankings end being the same, but not this year because there are players who still have points from the frozen rankings.
Right now Hurkacz has 2995, Norrie 2875 and Sinner 2845 (if he wins his match he'll get 2880.
Felix has chances too but he needs to do very well here and in Paris and depends of other results

Austrian, Dennis Novak, is quite the dish! Why did I not get the memo?
by Anonymous | reply 253 | October 26, 2021 6:01 PM |
R251, I understand how the rankings toward Nitto are cumulative just for this year's results, but aren't they still basing the qualifications on what the player's overall ranking is? Let's say that hypothetically FAA and Sinner both won no more matches in 2021 before Nitto, and Sinner fell behind Felix in the overall ATP rankings after his points from Sofia and that old challenger fell off in early November. Are you saying that wouldn't matter and Sinner would qualify anyway?? That makes no sense.
by Anonymous | reply 254 | October 26, 2021 6:26 PM |
R254 Not this year, in fact Felix used to be ahead of Sinner in the ranking (not anymore ater Jannick won last week) but he was behind in the ranking for the nitto finals.
Generally both rankings are the same at the end of the season but this year will be different because of the frozen ranking points till August.
The prime example is Federer, if he wasn't injured and played two or three more tournaments there was a clear posibility of him ending in the top 8 but he was way behind on the nitto ranking so he wouldn't play the nitt finals.
Nadal decided to not play due to his injury, but he probably end out of the top 8 of the year even if he keeps clearly inside of the top 8 on the atp ranking (he is 5 right now while he is 8 in the road to Torino ranking)

well moles can turn cancerous later in life. Given how much time tennis players spend outdoors playing and practicing in the sun, it would be a good move if Medvedev did in fact remove it. We'll know for sure in Paris next week
by Anonymous | reply 290 | October 29, 2021 3:26 AM |
R290 I just looked it up and removing moles doesn't reduce risk of cancer so it's purely cosmetic but yes, tennis player should be careful about the amount of sun exposure they get. Skin cancer is 4 times higher in Australia than in the US due to that.
