Sinner is really effective at finals.
I'm pretty sure next year he'll be a contender, he is not there yet but he'll be.
Alcaraz will be seeded at Indian Wells, that was faster than i was expected but he did a good US Open, without the frozen ranking he'll be number 21.
Ruud reached his first hard court final. He really deserves to reach the nitto finals. I suppose it'll be between him, Sinner, Felix and Hurkacz

by Anonymous | reply 44 | October 7, 2021 3:54 PM |
Count me among those who would much rather listen to Mary Carillo over Chris Fowler. She's the Rachel Maddow of tennis commentators--forthright, upbeat, frank, well versed, and with a vein of humor not to everyone's liking. If you don't like Mary, then I bet you don't like Rachel either.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | October 7, 2021 4:57 PM |
I realised tennis commentary( specially American tennis commentary) has gone to the dogs, ever since Marion Bartoli seems to be a better tennis commentator.
These days I would rather listen to generic tennis commentators like Tim Henman Mark Wodford, Todd Woodbridge, Barbara Schett etc than any American tennis commentators .
Only American I can listen to is boring ass Chanda Rubin simply because she is not insane.
This was not like that 15- 20 years ago..

by Anonymous | reply 48 | October 7, 2021 6:15 PM |
The Opelka interview is interesting. Some things I agree with, others no. The American males deserve to be criticized for not producing a slam champ since Roddick. I know it hurts their egos but that's the truth. Players from around the world come to the US to train and use the resources and then some of them become top players. We have some promising guys now but until 1 of them finally gets a slam, they're going to get criticized. Too bad.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | October 7, 2021 6:19 PM |
Speaking of Rachael Maddow, she had skin cancer! don't forget to check your moles folks!
by Anonymous | reply 50 | October 7, 2021 7:23 PM |
Look how long the press bashed the British players until Murray won his slams and now this year they finally have Raducanu for the women doing something. German tennis was in shambles after Haas didn't become the next Becker until Kerber went on her run a few years ago. The Aussie men are in a huge drought too. The French men are nowhere to be found and the women haven't done anything since Bartoli retired. The American men just have to deal with it, or even better, win a slam.

Police involved after Nick Kyrgios’ girlfriend posts ‘naked girl’ picture on Instagram
Tennis star Nick Kyrgios and his on-again-off-again girlfriend Chiara Passari might be off for good after an incident involving police on Thursday.
South Australia police responded to a call about a “verbal argument” at the couple’s medi-hotel in Adelaide, a police spokesperson told the DailyMail.
The incident reportedly occurred after Passari accused Kyrgios of cheating on her. She shared a photo to Instagram that appeared to show him in bed with a “naked girl.”
Passari, whose Instagram is now private, captioned the photo, “That girl naked in bed with him isn’t me by the way. Hope that clears it up.”
Passari was seemingly prompted to share the photo when she did an Instagram Q&A with fans and was asked, “What happened that fateful night at 161 nightclub?”
The fan question derived from a situation in February, when Kyrgios allegedly partied at nightclub OneSixOne in Melbourne until the early hours of the morning following the Australian Open.
In text exchanges on Thursday, published by News.com.au, Kyrgios and Passari continued a furious back-and-forth after police had arrived. According to the messages, also shared on Instagram Stories by Passari, the pair agreed to no longer live together.
The severity of the argument is unclear, but police said that “an investigation was conducted, no offenses were disclosed.”
The tennis player and model returned to Australia this week, and retreated to the hotel to isolate together.
According to police, Kyrgios and Passari will “now spend the remainder of their quarantine in separate rooms.”
Kyrgios and Passari, who began dating in July 2020, have been the subject of breakup rumors on a number of occasions prior to the incident.

R110 Rune had a not easy but not difficult path, a good result could put him on route to top 100.
This was a big faliure, Escobedo is talented but irregular, and it was a very easy match for him

R117 Iva Majoli was a top 10 player for quite some time when she won Roland Garros. It was a big surprise because HIngis was the big favourite, but Majoli was a top player (she reached the quarterfinals with 15 years old). She never reached a semifinal again on a GS, similar to Myskina

It's a shame Queen Emma lost, but it's probably not a bad thing. If she won again and again she'd start resting on her laurels.

Think this is the same mistake Osaka is making. Raducanu has been doing way too many other things. Met Gala, Bond premiere, meeting the Duchess of Cambridge, various media commitments when she should have spent a bunch of that time learning about Indian Wells (it's different to the US Open - slower surface, different air), practicing, and about her opponent. She seemed almost caught off or rusty, deploying the wrong tactics. A good coach should prepare her better than this.

R128, ATP is investigating rising star for yelling gay slurs during a match
During the semifinals of the Biella Challenger in Italy, Rune screamed the word “faggot” multiple times: once after his opponent hit the ball out of bounds, and then again after the winning point.
When one of Tomas Martin Etcheverry’s returns sailed over the white lines, Rune yelled “you are a pussy player!” and “you are playing like a faggot ass!” Later, he shouted “Allez, faggot!” (“Allez” is translated to “go” in English.)
The video is below. The first sequence of slurs comes at the 27-second mark.
ATP confirmed Monday it’s launching an investigation into the incident.
“ATP is committed to ensuring an inclusive environment for all players, staff and fans, and there is absolutely no room for homophobic remarks in tennis,” the organization said in a statement, via Tennis Tonic.
Rune, 18, made his ATP debut earlier this year. He’s already clinched two titles, including last weekend’s Biella Challenger.
On Sunday, Rune issued an apology on Instagram for his language. He doesn’t deny he used the slurs, but contends he was directing them at himself — otherwise known as the Justin Thomas defense.
Later, Rune made alterations to his apology. Tennis podcaster James Rogers captured a screenshot of the original statement. He told Outsports he took the picture at around 12:00 p.m. EST on Sunday.
The edited apology is more concise. “I want to take the opportunity to apologise if I offended anyone for using some bad wording to myself in my semifinal yesterday during some tough points,” Rune’s post now reads. “I am sorry for that and this will of course not happen again.”
That’s not all Rune has said on the matter, however. When the creator of a fan site reached out on Twitter, he pledged his love of diversity.
Rune has also been active in the comment section of his apology, affirming he wasn’t directing homophobic taunts towards his opponent.
Rune’s mother issued her own statement. In it, she criticized the media for its coverage of the story. “DO NOT harass Holger for a wrong comment,” she wrote.
As Rune’s mom contends, we’ve all said regrettable words in our teenage years. Rune is just 18 years old and wasn’t apologizing in his native language. If I apologized in another language, I’m sure I would be cleaning up my statements as well.
But Rune isn’t just any 18 year old: he’s a professional tennis player. That means his mistakes occur in the public eye, and thus, his offensive remarks can’t just be dismissed. They contribute to the culture of casual homophobia that pervades men’s tennis and other sports.
Gay Dartmouth tennis player John Speicher wrote about the lack of LGBTQ representation in the sport’s professional ranks in his coming-out essay. A pro player appearing to yell “faggot” on the court multiple times doesn’t help matters.
“The individual nature of professional tennis makes it particularly challenging for players to come out,” Speicher writes. “No one wants to be vulnerable and feel like they’re displaying any sort of weakness to the competition and you have no teammates to confide in.”
As we’ve written before, it doesn’t matter whether athletes are showing their opponents with gay slurs, or saving them for themselves. The fact is, they’re still far too common.
Rune says he supports the LGBTQ community and embraces diversity. This is a case where future actions will speak louder than an Instagram post.

by Anonymous | reply 136 | October 9, 2021 8:17 PM |
R129 To be fair with Rune, he dealt with the incident quite well, the apology was pr standard but he answered questions online and take the blame.
And that's something you can say about her mother and Moratoglou (he trains at his academy) who blamed the press who went after therir precious child for no reason.
Unlike Fognini incident, who was clearly insulting himself (Fabio had a fame of being a hothead and he had a very particular way to make amends) in Rune's case the impression was he was insulting his rival which made the thing way worse.
He is a kid but his behaviour on court is not exactly desirable. I think it was fucsovics who complained about Alcaraz being too efussive on his celebrations but that's all you can complain about him, on the other hand Rune is from Zverev, Medvedev, Tsitsipas shool and he screams, argues with the chairman, smash raquets and all that jazz. I think they are not concious that really looks bad on them and gives credibility of any bad behaviour off court reported, but in Rune's case there's the excuse that he is new and very young so maybe he'll improve in the future.
I think he is one (if not the one) atp is more invested, there were a lot of articles about him even before he really was even at challenger level and he is the king of wc. Now it's clear that he has merits to receive them but that was not the case in the past. Of course he is way ahead of all his competition born in 2003 (with the exception of Alcaraz, of course), the next players of that age are Mochizuki and Nardi and they are not on the top 400 yet

Interesting interview with Opelka. I will say one name. Chris Fowler tweeted about Carlos Alcaraz, the youngest man to make a Slam quarterfinal. He tweeted, “What a shame that he threw in the towel, hope that this isn’t a pattern.” That was pathetic.
But Alcaraz is just 18, he plays in the shadow of Rafa and he was balling in New York and had a great run.
I tweeted back at Fowler saying, “After everything Carlos showed us this week, you’re really going to question his courage?” That’s one take that’s terrible. This guy is on ESPN, he does college football, he shouldn’t work another tennis match. It hurts the sport because ESPN has a lot of guys who are following football or don’t know Carlos Alcaraz…and don’t know anything about tennis and they’re like, “This young kid just completely just walked off the court, what an idiot, what a jackass.” That just can’t happen. If I’m commissioner of tennis, that’s one offense too much.

I like Opelka calling out Fowler, but the rest of the interview was Douche 101. Wahhh! I play a sport and people expect me to win! Wahhh!

Heh I wonder if Pops hurt his back with the racquet smashing tantrum he threw in the last match. Was definitely team ShapaThaRappa for that one (god wasn't he embarrassed enough the last time?)
Bianca doesn't look fat at all to me, don't know what some idiots are talking about (and I'm usually pretty into weight-shaming).
Lehlah(?) is pretty inoffensive to me, she's less noisy than most on the court and has an interesting play style. Radacanu is definitely prettier but, of the two, I think she's less likely to break through - she had a relatively easy run in the USO (final included!) vs L who got past many of the seeds. But time will tell - I don't think one early loss for Radacanu is enough to write her off.

I’m starting to think it’s Evans.

Opelka's personality and intelligence add charm, whereas Evans is just all around unpleasant. Novaxx and Zverev's scowly emaciation and other personality traits make them equally vile.

by Anonymous | reply 255 | October 12, 2021 4:03 PM |
R255 She made the QF of the RG held last June and those were the points factored against her win at last year's RG. Hence, the drop off was not as steep.

by Anonymous | reply 260 | October 12, 2021 6:48 PM |
Yes, he is.
I remember the days Raquel Pedraza was one of the best prospects of american tennis. I suppose the pregnancy ended her career (but her good days were in the U14 cathegory so maybe she was not going to be a pro anyway)

by Anonymous | reply 262 | October 12, 2021 6:49 PM |
I remember Fritz's mother playing back in the day. She went deep at some of those ghetto French Opens that Evert/Navratilova didn't bother to attend. Was even a #2 seed at one of them.
It's odd that he's a divorced father at such a young age. I can't think of anything worse, and i'm sure the kid doesn't get to see much of him with him being constantly on the road. At least he comes from $$$$$ though (much like billionaire heiress JPEG).
by Anonymous | reply 263 | October 12, 2021 7:02 PM |
Swiatek is really making a habit out of these extended bathroom breaks. She pulled this crap at the French when Sakkari was bossing her around the court too.
She's great when routining her opponents like she did to win her RG title, but not such a great problem solver yet when things aren't going her way.

The bathroom break worked and Iga went a break ahead, but she loses her break advantage in set 2 and predictably pulls a tactical MTO. Side eyeing her on this one.
Pegula skulldragged Svitolina 6-1 6-1. Apparently she now equals Barty & Sakkari at the top of the leaderboard for top 10 wins, and is in with a shot to qualify for the championships in Guadalajara.

I'm rooting for Ons. She has won the most matches this year on the WTA tour and a big title like this would cement her resume and automatically qualify her for Guadalajara. She also just became the first Arab player ever in the top 10, male or female.
The remaining men are mostly trash, but maybe it would be good for Monfils to finally have his moment (in this desert of a lineup). He's not going to get many more chances. I also like looking at Ruud, Tommy Paul, and Sissypants. And wouldn't mind getting crushed by Aslan's calves.

Hsieh and Mertens defeated DL's favourite duo of bratty teenagers Leylah and Coco in the doubles, despite the overwhelming (and obnoxious) support coming from the teenagers players box.
Hsieh seems like such a sweet person, wearing this dinosaur thing for the physio's birthday. In the full interview she thanks Elise for playing with her this year and being patient with her. With this win, they have officially qualified for the YEC.

Fernandez had a few brief, bratty facial expressions at times against Rogers that I couldn't quite figure out. Was her takeaway from their US Open clash that she's too superior to lose to a player like Rogers? Given the praise Shelby had for her in the on-court interview afterward, probably not. I felt surprisingly bad for her as she left the court, though; she looked quietly stunned.

by Anonymous | reply 306 | October 13, 2021 6:49 PM |
R303, it was Emma who took out Shelby at Open.
I saw a couple of the faces Leylah made in highlights, and I agree it didn't seem as if Leylah was too gracious. I guess I'm adding fuel to the anti-Leylah fire. She didn't seem to want to be too chatty with Shelby after the handshake. Shelby seems to be one heckuva nice gal. I did see Leylah's press conference, or parts of it anyway. Her analysis seemed to be, "I made mistakes and she didn't...." which, IMHO, REALLY isn't great humility.
Why can't she, (and others), after a loss, say, "man, she (or he) totally outplayed me. It wasn't the weather, it wasn't my match from two days ago. It's just that my opponent really clobbered me today, and I was trying so very hard to win!"

Why are we going after Leyla or Emma when Ostapenko is the nastiest WTA player by a mile? She complains about every close call, mutters to herself and her box with hands on hips constantly, and has no respect for her opponents.
Plus, she’s seriously unattractive and always looks like she’s sucking on a grapefruit, which is normally all it takes for us to hate someone.
Even Lindsay called her out on her disrespect for her opponents last night.
We should be rooting for her to get bageled in the next round.

R335 Her sportsmanship is actually abhorrent, she seems like a real scumbag. But I secretly love her pantomime facial expressions lol. I think people give her slack because her game is more flashy and exciting when on (even though 90% of the season it's a huge mess).

R336 lots of one slam winners. Better to do it once than not at all but I see many argue that you should be a multi slam winner to get in. I guess Ivanovic cause she was also number 1 and a top 10 player for awhile.

Ivanovic, Moya and Ferrero all got to #1 at least. Ivanovic and Ferrero also reached 2 other slam finals while Moya reached 1.
Pennetta does not belong at all. Her career was like Myskina's. Just 1 fluke slam win, no other finals at all and never close to #1 ranking

Daddy Fritz all the way
by Anonymous | reply 364 | October 15, 2021 9:06 PM |
seems like Raducanu is already feeling the pressure of winning a slam and people hyping her up. It's understandable obviously
she pulled out of Moscow at the last minute today but is not injured. She just said she is making a scheduling change. She does plan on playing in Romania the following week

C'mon Vika! You deserve another title!
by Anonymous | reply 366 | October 15, 2021 11:03 PM |
Would you assholes lay off Emma? Some of you are acting like if she doesn't win every tournament she enters for the rest of her career she'll be some sort of disappointment. Calm the fuck down and unclench your pearls.
by Anonymous | reply 367 | October 15, 2021 11:15 PM |
R367 that's a real overreaction to the reporting that she has pulled out of a tournament without citing an injury. No one expects her to win everything but at the same time the British media is putting lots of pressure on her. That isn't healthy but it's what they do.

really pleased that Tsitsipas and Zverev are both out
So now it's Norrie vs. Dimitrov and Basilashvili vs. Fritz
I'd prefer if Fritz or Norrie won just because I want a new Masters winner and Dimitrov does have Cincinnati from a few years ago

Azarenka team or Ostapenko team?
Ons team or Badosa team?

R365 - I hope Răducanu is going to wear adequate protective gear. I am in Romania and the government collapsed about a week and a half ago. The police and army have disappeared. The infection rate is insane, they are at the top of the list in terms of COVID mortality rate in the world. Some places have run out of death certificates and burial ground. It's pretty creepy and we are counting the days until we get out of here. Don't be surprised if her PR people cancel.

Taylor! Shit. I can’t believe it!

R371 government collapsed? what is going on there?
by Anonymous | reply 373 | October 16, 2021 12:09 AM |
She announced she would be playing and did the video in Romanian. I think she can't pull out of there because it would be a big blow to the Romanian fans who are expecting her (and they can be quite rowdy lol, if anyone has seen any Fed Cup match involving Romania). Honestly she was busy doing other media engagements and enjoying her new fame to prepare properly for Indian Wells, and after such an early exit she has no chance of qualifying for the YEC. I might have just called it a year and come back next year if I were her, obviously her priorities right now have shifted, she has a tonne of deals coming in, and her coaching situation is still up in the air.
This mens SF lineup is looking very WTA-esque! Unseeded Norrie, Basilashvili, plus Grigor and... Taylor Fritz who has been slumping since he choked to Djokovic in Australia?
Ons Team
Azarenka Team

Wow, can't believe the German asshole lost! Good for fritz!!
by Anonymous | reply 375 | October 16, 2021 12:45 AM |
I think she's been distracted looking for a coach too.
by Anonymous | reply 376 | October 16, 2021 12:53 AM |
r371 is either a paid Big Pharma shill (like Sir Andy) and/or severely mentally ill. The majority of Romanians are awake and don't want these death jabs. Their choice.
"Some places have run out of death certificates and burial ground." OK... sure mate. We totally believe you!!

It's hard to take Ostapenko seriously when she reminds me so much of the younger brother from "The Adventures of Pete & Pete."

Azarenka wins in three sets, 7-5 in the last set..

Ons team.

I love Vika; shame about the noise.

I don't know why but I've never crushed on Fritz given his looks etc. But now he's my hero, taking out Wifebeater. I'd be ok with him winning this whole thing, though my heart wants Dimitrov.

After years of struggling with the pressure Badosa she seems to be reaching her best form, i hope it happens the same with Rebeka Masarova (now spanish former swiss) who has a similar story and this year made the top 200 after starting the year outside top 700.
It's good there are some surprises but i don't want the atp to become the wta

R373 - essentially, the progressive party collapsed because the Romanian equivalent of the far right won the majority of votes in parliament in a bid to declare all of their anti-COVID measures (curfew, green pass, mask mandates) null and void. The progressives accuse the Russians of setting up the whole thing. The minister was physically chased put of parliament and things have been getting weird. All law enforcement has vanished from the streets and the city center and busy shopping areas. People are defying the laws and nobody is doing much of anything. It's like a total calm before the storm.
It is now the world leader in COVID deaths in proportion to the population. Americans are advised to leave or not enter the country due to the risk of contagion and, also, due to he fact that the medical system is collapsing under the weight. My roommate and I are vaccinated but we are both kind of in panic mode and thinking of leaving. I have been MIA on here due to work, stress and, because I hosted a wonderful older couple I met at Pride who are from the East Coast but retired in Budapest 10 years ago. At least I got some sex and good company. But overall, stress and panic is the order of the day. I still don't know if Raducanu will come. Things are changing every day and it may not be safe.
