The on-air talent takes the dish only so far, sometimes up to the point of sliding it into the oven. The dish that comes out for the final reveal is one the test cooks have carefully slaved over to make sure it looks picture perfect. Hell, even on Paula Deen's old show when she would demonstrate many dishes as if she grew up eating them. I can guarantee you she'd never seen or heard of most (if not all) of those dishes until they were dreamed up by the test cook staff. They'd teach her just enough so she'd look like she knew what she was doing while on the air and then they'd actually cook the dish she revealed at the end.

ATK's revenue (not budget) was $12 million for 2021. They have 272 employees.

Each recipe ATK comes up with costs roughly $11,000.00 to produce.

No one watches ATK for some "Hunger Games" style competition: you watch it for food nerds talking about the best way to make a cookie (even if it is ridiculously complicated). Thanks for mentioning the show. While these cooking competitions can be repetitive, this one plays to ATK’s strengths with a whole team of hosts in rotation. They subtly plug their own recipes, but I appreciated that because I know and like their food. The host is pretty grating - I have no idea why someone so superficial was chosen for an otherwise thoughtful show.

The only ATK chef who presents recipes I think would really be good is Elle Simone,

I'm too lazy to google it, but there was an article about how Kimball got into a dispute with ATK over $$ because he was the "stah", all while working on developing his own competitive project, Milk Street, thereby negotiating in bad faith with the show. Plus, the article implied that he was just an arrogant overbearing guy and the rest of the cast didn't like him. At that time, the question was whether ATK could survive without him and the answer is clearly yes. Even though Bridget & Julia are the defacto "hosts", the show doesn't really revolve around one person anymore.
