Woman kicked down Brooklyn escalator by complete stranger
by Anonymous | reply 138 | September 19, 2021 5:52 PM |
Victim must be white, hence the article not mentioning it.

Any pictures of the guy who did it?

R7, the guy who looks like a woman in the image previews.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | September 14, 2021 2:58 PM |
How horrible. Poor thing.
We had a similar-ish thing in the UK where a man ran up to a woman and pushed her in front of a bus. It was only because the driver swerved in time that she wasn’t killed.
In spite of being caught on camera, he was never caught. I hope they get this dickhead.

R9, I remember that. A woman jogger.

by Anonymous | reply 11 | September 14, 2021 3:04 PM |
R8 thanks—thought that was a woman, so didn’t think that was the shover.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | September 14, 2021 3:06 PM |
Yet another reason to institutionalize the mentally ill who refuse to take their meds.
Politley asking a person to apologize is no reason to shove them down an escalator, that fug motherfucker could have killed the woman. What would have happened if her hair got caught in the escalator steps? I don't even want to imagine. She could have been scalped!
Reagan is the bastard who gave the mentally ill a free pass. He allowed them to sign out of mental hospitals. Of course, the main reason for that, the ReThugs no longer wanted to pay the medical bills to keep these crazies off the streets.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | September 14, 2021 3:13 PM |
The woman who was shoved was interviewed on the local news, she sounded Asian. The weirdo who shoved her is likely a racist who is blaming ALL Asians for Covid.
Quelle surprise.

The media also never instinctively refer to someone who is white who commits a mass shooting or has a car full of weapons in DC or sitting in his truck with a bomb, as a "terrorist." They get to be "mentally ill" to excuse the behavior.
So it evens out, eh?
You have no problem with that ever-present narrative, I'm sure.

R22, I didn't agree that the victim must be white, or that the media always hide a white victim, but just regarding your statement that
[quote] The media also never instinctively refer to someone who is white who commits a mass shooting or has a car full of weapons in DC or sitting in his truck with a bomb, as a "terrorist." They get to be "mentally ill" to excuse the behavior.
The media certainly do refer to perpetrators of mass crimes as terrorists, regardless of race. If someone is found with a carload of weapons but hasn't done anything yet, however, no, they don't refer to him as a terrorist.

Lies. Mass shootings by whites are NEVER referred to as terrorism (and spare me the ideology crap because they never wait to find out why a non-white guy did it before they call it terrorism).
And January 6th was mostly referred to as "Insurrectionists" by MSM. It was under pressure by people who were so outraged by the glaring hypocrisy that they finally started with "domestic terrorism."
White guys had to literally storm the Capitol to finally be referred to as terrorists. But even the guy in the truck who said he had a bomb wasn't called a terrorist

R13 I completely loathe Reagan, who did contribute to the further decay of America, but I wouldn't go praising past mental hospitals before looking into how they really were. Of course Republicans never want to pay for anything, but this was more about not wanting to pay for improved facilities. I'm sure if they could've kept getting away with not addressing the abusive, low staffed, cesspools, they would've left them open.
I'm always horrified to see the yearning here to go back to those days. No regard for the people that were imprisoned at these places just for being uppity women, gay, an abused elder, severely disabled, etc. There were little rights in fighting the system if they wanted to keep you indefinitely.
The places were straight out of Hell. Though I agree there's a mental health crisis, and that we do need better ways of getting people help that won't do so of their own will, I'll never support going back to tge old system.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | September 14, 2021 5:22 PM |
R13 knowing about the horrors that took place in these institutions, should make people reconsider what they're suggesting.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | September 14, 2021 5:27 PM |
Please R37 R38, not all mental wards, or group homes for the mentally ill, are like Willowbrook. There has to be some way, especially in in today's world, to get these people off the streets. In NYC, they seem to be multiplying like rabbits!
There was a man who was recently going about his business in a Manhattan ATM, when some lunatic went into the bank lobby and assaulted him with an AXE! The man is lucky to be alive. These violent assaults have become an everyday occurrence in NYC, much like gun violence has across the entire US.
Most of these violent individuals are also homeless, while not all homeless are violent, a good majority of them are and they sure are not taking their meds.
You sound like a person who never had any sort of unprovoked encounter with a mentally disturbed person. Do you ride the subways and or buses in a large city? Or do you cab it everywhere.
Let's not forget, re Willowbrook, lots of rich people threw their mentally ill and retarded children into those hell holes. Some of the children weren't even mentally ill, they had cerebral palsy! WTF are you going on about, "being uppity women, gay, an abused elder", what era are you referring to? The early 1900s?
Many years ago, my father was punched in the face while heading home from work. He was his way to the 23rd Street subway to go home. It was broad daylight, the streets were crowded, it was around 4:30PM. He didn't say anything to, or even bump into, the lunatic who walked up to him, then punched him.
My father's eyeglasses went flying, he fell, then, hit his head on the sidewalk. The decent people who worked in a small shoe store saw what happened and ran out to help. They brought him into the store, then called the police. Of course, the lunatic was never caught. This violent mentally ill person probably went on to rape or murder someone.
By all means, let these crazies continue to run amok.
Get assaulted for absolutely NO reason, then, get back to me.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | September 15, 2021 12:18 AM |
The attacker probably got angry because the victim didn't use the proper pronouns.

You keep your head down, don't make eye contact. Any contact (physical, eye contact) could be taken as "disrespecting" the person, who'll in turn commit physical violence against you, or at least scream at you.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | September 15, 2021 8:00 PM |
As if people who DID NOT make eye contact were never assaulted? Some of you are utterly clueless.
Are some of you not reading this thread?
About two weeks ago, in Manhattan, a man was attacked by an axe welding maniac inside a bank's ATM section. The man was minding his own business.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | September 15, 2021 8:12 PM |
R44, if 80% of attacks included eye contact and other interaction, and 20% didn’t, it still makes sense to avoid the 80% by avoiding eye contact and interaction. The remaining 20% could still happen, but at least you’re addressing the 80%.
Keep your heads down. Don’t make eye contact. Wear earbuds so you can pretend not to hear crazy people talking to you. You don’t even need to be listening to anything through the earbuds.

I grew up in Bushwick Bklyn, way before the trust fund asshole hipsters took over.
Again, you DL newbies are fucking CLUELESS! I laugh out loud when you come armed with your percentages and lame-ass statistics. There is always a first time for anything, especially in NYC.
NYC has always been somewhat dangerous and violent, just because some real estate assholes put up expensive housing on the Bklyn and Long Island City waterfronts, that won't change a damn thing. Violent criminals and crazy people are everywhere. There are no truly safe neighborhoods in NYC.
This past Sunday, around 12 noon, a 77 year old woman was recently robbed in Long island City.

by Anonymous | reply 51 | September 15, 2021 11:03 PM |
r51, that's the part that jumped out at me too.
"First, she said, she had music playing in her earbuds. “Even if he had said ‘excuse me,’ I didn’t hear it. I learned we have to be more conscious of sounds and people around you,” she said."
It's stupid talking to anyone on the street today, because people are crazy. But telling someone to say excuse me when you have no way of telling if they actually did? Even dumber. She didn't deserve this, but she's still an idiot.

There isn't. The medical industry is about profit, and the mentally ill people you talk about aren't insured or going to be able to pay. That will lead once again to the government funding these places and Republicans will gut their funding, because it's not like prisons where they can turn the prisoners into sources of free labor. Lack of funds will mean lack of care and eventually decrepit and dangerous hospitals.

Which is why, even if it’s not my fault, I apologize in any sort of bodily collision. Don’t make eye contact, neutral expression, pull in all my vibes and throw on my shield of invisibility. I like to think that I’ve developed antennae for the restless antagonists, but sometimes they come out of nowhere. And sometimes you can’t get away from them. Sometimes you can’t do anything to prevent the random violence.

btw, the area where the 77 year old woman was robbed and assaulted last Sunday at 12 noon in Long Island City Queens, was literally ONE BLOCK away from a police precinct. Of course, typical of these situations, there are never cops around when people actually need them, but there were sure more than enough cops around to stop Eric Garner from selling loose cigarettes!
One odd thing about the clip showing the old woman getting robbed, it looked as if someone was filming the robbery and assault. The footage didn't look like a clip from a security camera.
The audacity of these thugs, some actually have someone film their crimes.

The amazing thing is the person on the escalator who just sort of moves aside and doesn't seem to have any interest in this horrific assault happening to a fellow human being. I'm a native Manhattanite and about as jaded as they come, but if I saw that I'd be running down the escalator, calling 911, and waiting with the injured person till the ambulance comes. I hate this motherfucking city and every motherfucking cunt in it.

You never know what psychological burdens someone is carrying. Could be anything from outright mental illness to just a series of shitty events that have ruined their day. There's no need to add to it or go about in the world with a Karen badge chastising someone for passing you when you're standing in the middle of an escalator. Just stand to the right so people can go around and carry on with your day.

People (lots of them) have so much built-up anger before they even leave their homes and go outside. I'll include a couple members of my family. One stupid little thing is the straw that broke the camel's back -- anger spews forth on a stranger. It's not even culturally discouraged to have a hair-trigger temper. Some consider it: "standing up for my family," and other bullshit.
As I get older, I really value my ability to be patient a lot of the time. It's not worth it.

[quote] I'm sure if they could've kept getting away with not addressing the abusive, low staffed, cesspools, they would've left them open.
I did my psychiatric nurse training in a psych hospital and it was nothing like that. It was constantly visited by the state & routinely visited by JCAHO (joint commission for accreditation of hospitals]. The state made surprise visits, hoping to catch hospitals doing something wrong. My aunt ran the geriatric building & loved her patients.
The hospitals were not understaffed in those days (1970s) because Jimmy Carter developed a program called CETA to train women for jobs, particularly govt jobs. In the 70s the divorce rate went sky high & women needed to return to the workforce because of inflation. One of the jobs CETA trained women for was nursing assistant in state psych hospitals. My mother joined CETA & became an NA at a local state hospital. NAs were allowed to pass medication & do other things NAs couldn’t do in non-state-psych hospitals, so psych hospitals needed fewer nurses & were cheaper to run.
CETA trained black women for jobs to get them off welfare, which was basically the real reason Carter developed it. You would think GOP would like getting people off welfare, right? Well, GOP had a shit fit & couldn’t wait to get rid of that program. If black women were trained for jobs, then govt & other employers would have to hire them! And they’d have to get benefits, decent salary, pension, maternity leave…in other words, they’d have to be treated like whites in the workplace. Horrors! Psych hospitals *did* have to hire lots of women of color because staff had been 100% white since they were built. Affirmative action said state had to hire more blacks than whites at that time to achieve more balanced parity. You can imagine how GOP felt about that.
The hospitals had art therapy, on site AA, NarcAnon meetings, a greenhouse and little cafes staffed by patients. Hospital food wasn’t good. They had stuff like hot dogs & beans, grilled cheese, macaroni & cheese. Not a lot of variety. Another thing was roaches. They exterminated every 2 weeks but patients would squirrel food away in their pockets and get crumbs all over the place. They were mentally ill, after all, so there were problems. Smoking was freely allowed when I first went there, but then they restricted it & only allowed smoking on balconies. The balconies were areas where patients could get fresh air but they had brick bars. With restricted smoking came some strain, because patients got upset and NAs had to observe them on balconies while smoking, which took NAs away from the great room where most of the patients were.
It wasn’t the Ritz. But staff got to know patients & would clue each other in on signs regarding patient behavior. Like “Sally likes to put white powder on & say she’s a ghost… that’s ok. But when she starts saying “Blah, blah, blah” you have to look out. It means she’s about to blow, so keep an eye.”
Psych hospitals were not stress-free, but they were organized & patients were well treated. Psychiatrists were on the grounds at all times - the hospital I visited provided free housing to psychiatrists. They had regular shifts & took call.
The developmental centers were a different story. They were filled with patients that we now call autistic & there was no treatment for autism. Patients could be very violent. Staff could, and did, get injured. So staff restrained patients as well as they could to keep patients from hurting themselves & others. It was a frustrating & physically dangerous environment — all of the patients were incontinent & at least half of them needed to be fed by aides. Nobody wanted to work there. Staff was under constant stress & weren’t the most educated & experienced people to begin with. The center I visited for a few weeks was almost entirely staffed by black kids who were still in high school or just graduated. They were so stressed sometimes they would grab their hair & cry. I could see why…it was chaos.
Developmental centers needed to be closed down.

However, that reaction was *way* over the top. She really could have died. As mentioned upthread, her hair or some of her clothing could have gotten caught in the moving metal. I'd like to see that guy try it with a man.

Nutters and anger aside, I'm always surprised there are not more accidental injuries on escalators.
People fainting, losing their balance, getting clothing stuck in the mechanism, etc. Doesn't seem to happen much, or have reportable consequences, but with all the use those things get, and the height of them, it's surprising. Even moreso when they're broken and people who didn't bargain on it have to walk up and down them.

Suing him would require seeing him again, and in all her interviews she whines how she never wants to do so.
“I’ve never seen him before, and I hope he’s never seen me before,” she added. “And I hope I never see him again.”
She better be hoping for a plea then, because testifying against him in court will also require seeing him and him seeing her.

I'd never watched the video before. He doesn't bump into her. If there's any contact it's incidental at best. Why would she tell him he needed to say "Excuse me"? I would never think someone who brushes by on an escalator needs to say a damn thing.
He shouldn't have kicked her, but at least she's unlikely to be harassing passersby with demands for etiquette again.

[quote]We had a similar-ish thing in the UK where a man ran up to a woman and pushed her in front of a bus. It was only because the driver swerved in time that she wasn’t killed.
This reminds me of the girl who was pushed on to train tracks in Ireland earlier this year.

You should probably include most of Datalounge because there are a veritable shit ton of people in this thread saying she deserved it. The "she didn't deserve it but" crowd are absolutely saying she deserved it.

Nobody deserves what happened to this woman, as R106 wrote.
However, people, please be safe and NEVER GET IN A FIGHT WITH A STRANGER. Please. I live in an American city (not NYC) where people are hoping to be provoked into beating your ass. I see it all the time. It's just not worth it. Let insults and annoying behavior slide off you back and keep it moving.

Thankfully she wasn't playfully bumped (to death) by a car.
by Anonymous | reply 110 | September 19, 2021 8:34 AM |
Man, she really rolled ALL THE WAY down. It's pretty unsettling how he casually walks away. That's how you know he's bananas.
Also? He's cute...for an attempted murderer.

You have to wonder how they found him so fast. There's obviously a higher level of CCTV survelliance and AI face recognition going on than is being publically admitted to.
by Anonymous | reply 112 | September 19, 2021 11:00 AM |
They found him because his eyes and body and hair are all over the media and someone tipped the police. If you know this guy you would instantly recognize him in the video. No AI face surveillance necessary.

If you are female, elderly , Asian , gay or white you have a bullseye on your back in NYC. Truth. I don’t give a fuck if she said say excuse me . No criminal record and probably not on drugs. He is an angry POC in NYC . What don’t you get. This is a weekly occurrence in NYC now. Btw I am not a Trumper , repug or even white. You learn to keep your head down and your mouth shut but cause the inmates are now running the asylum in The Big Apple.

R39 Sadly, people lack the ability to put themselves in others’ shoes until something happens to them or their loved ones. I for one am getting very tired of living in a hyper violent country. It has been out of control for quite some time and anyone who denies it is a liar.
by Anonymous | reply 115 | September 19, 2021 12:27 PM |
R114 No one will say it because they have been bullied into being a labeled a racist if so. Insanity.

I live in Detroit. A young POC man drove by a 40 year old woman and threw gasoline on her, setting her on fire just 3 days ago. This happened at the end of my block, which is a quiet block of melting pot of families with children. This is not just NYC. Terrifying.

It happened in Chicago too, three years ago! They put a noose around me as well.

R72, no one should try to "go down" an upward moving escalator. It only causes more problems as causes people to get stuck, etc. The person moving forward basically did the only thing they could safely do for everyone on a moving escalator.

Once he's convicted, I'd be curious to know what he was thinking in the moment. You wonder if once he's got nothing to lose he would answer honestly. I don't know how we even begin to solve this kind of anti social risk until we understand it. Not cutting him any slack but maybe he snapped because of COVID. Everybody is worn out. It would be so interesting to understand.

He is probably already out on bail and on the street. Also I got a trans vibe from the original image.

"Police say Hill does not have a criminal record."
Well, now this nasty motherfucker sure will have a criminal record.
The person who watched the woman get pushed and offered no help, should also get reprimanded for being such a piece of shit, they casually moved as the woman was shoved. Unreal. So many people are such trash. People are becoming so immune to violence. Especially gun violence.
Besides shaving his head, why was this creep dressed so professionally? Guess he tried to change his image so he wouldn't get caught or did the cops show up at his door, then allowed him to put on a shirt and a suit jacket?
by Anonymous | reply 135 | September 19, 2021 5:42 PM |

[Quote]Once he's convicted, I'd be curious to know what he was thinking in the moment.
My gut feeling is that he was fucking pissed by her attitude when she said "say excuse me" to him, then turned her head away. It's a typical self-respect attitude among some New Yorkers, and it can be annoying as hell.
However, his response was completely uncalled for. New York is a tough city, and most of us ignore those with that type of attitude. It's not worth reacting to it.

Wasn't that person a woman? If so and she had tried to catch her, perhaps the force of the kick would have caused them both to tumble backward, which would've been even worse. That said, watching it, I do wish someone could have caught her.
