The Gays and Tennis Part 99: USO finals

the tournament is coming to an end after a wild women's draw and some interesting results in the men's but ultimately the predicted final there

by Anonymousreply 542October 7, 2021 3:35 AM

Raducanu is English? Surely a name from East East East East Anglia.

by Anonymousreply 1September 11, 2021 8:18 PM

R1 Hey, you know that the UK has tons of immigrants right? Just like the US.

by Anonymousreply 2September 11, 2021 10:43 PM

R1 and all North Americans who don’t have First Nation names..?

by Anonymousreply 3September 11, 2021 11:02 PM

I bet Lelah must hate Emma, she's the won who beat all the top players on the way to the final! Plus Emma is taller, prettier, has nicer hair, speaks better, on and on...

Joe Salisbury's VPL needs its own thread.

I saw that picture today. What kind of underwear does he wear? Boxers?

by Anonymousreply 7September 12, 2021 4:42 AM

What drives me crazy about Salisbury is that he's completely shaved, even the arms. Imagine what those legs and ass might look like. Not only is he handsome, but he also plays beautifully.

by Anonymousreply 8September 12, 2021 10:30 AM

We need some Salisbury nudes STAT

by Anonymousreply 9September 12, 2021 11:19 AM

Leylah and her 9-11 pandering was very cringeworthy to many of us, but it was a brilliant move on her part because it's ensuring future crowd support. I'm old enough to have watched Jimmy Connors do something similar in one of his US Open finals matches. I seem to recall him, poignantly say, "you may not all love me, but I love all of you." THAT moment (along with some great play, if I'm being honest) propelled him to Teflon status.

by Anonymousreply 10September 12, 2021 12:55 PM

R10 she should have said jews did it , it would be better

by Anonymousreply 14September 12, 2021 2:39 PM

I have a feeling Med is going to win today.

by Anonymousreply 15September 12, 2021 3:10 PM
Leylah and her 9-11 pandering was very cringeworthy to many of us, but it was a brilliant move on her part because it's ensuring future crowd support.

Connors was a regular in the later rounds of the USA Open for almost 15 years. Fernandez will likely not even get to the quarters at any Slam again. She is unlikely to get another draw like this where everyone she plays is a mental midget and crumbles when the match gets close. The bitch will be losing in the first round of minor tournaments of the Canadian satellite circuit five years from now, so her pandering won't do her any good.

by Anonymousreply 16September 12, 2021 3:14 PM

she got herself in the news today with that little speech lol.

Her serve isn't good at all. She has good mentality, she may win a few things, I think she should definitely cash in on the endorsements. All that running around the court, she might get injured very soon and won't last very long in the grind of the tour.

I'm not sure who is going to win today. My head is saying Novak. Medvedev is going to have to play lights out or hope the occasion somehow gets to Novak and he can't produce his best tennis.

by Anonymousreply 19September 12, 2021 4:02 PM

Don't worry Leylah, you can always try to land a billionaire like me xoxo

by Anonymousreply 20September 12, 2021 4:41 PM

The two I thought could stop Djokovic were Zverev and Med.

If it goes 5 and Med loses, I'm going to want those 5 hours back.

by Anonymousreply 21September 12, 2021 4:48 PM

Leylah’s cunning reminds me of a young Novax.

by Anonymousreply 22September 12, 2021 4:53 PM

Leylah did beat three of the best players in the world to get to the finals...They were ranked 2, 3 and 5. So they may be head cases, but they were successful headaches. I also found her 9-11 speech a little cringeworthy, but still preferred it to Emma's speeches, which seem somewhat bot-like. Still it was a thrilling tournament. And I do hope NoVax loses.

by Anonymousreply 23September 12, 2021 5:30 PM

Hey gays, don't forget to watch ME win the women's doubles with what's her name.

Nole

by Anonymousreply 29September 12, 2021 7:06 PM

Djokovic for history. He's earned it.

For all his bad behavior on court he's been an outstanding human being off the court. No one could know what it is like to be the most famous person from your country. It's kind of insane to think about it.

If he had been American or British or Spanish or Swiss how many more slams would he have had? At least 3 in my mind. Because he was always 3 or 4th billing he always got the shittiest scheduling and until roofs he got screwed multiple times. Before instant replay popular players got the close calls. Williams got screwed many times as well and they weren't even Serbian.

I think the crowd will be on his side, they want to be part of history. Right now for nosebleed seats cheapest is 695. In his round one match you could have bought the same seat for 8 dollars.

His 3 main character flaws are completely human and understandable, his temper, his desire to be liked and his magical thinking.

by Anonymousreply 30September 12, 2021 7:14 PM

What is the condition of Medvedev's mole (not Nole) today?

by Anonymousreply 31September 12, 2021 7:22 PM

Nice whitewashing, R30. His behavior on court has devolved from mere temper tantrums to bizarre pathological displays (e.g. the RG semis this year). His COVID stance is reprehensible. His arrogance and dismissiveness to the press when confronted about his behavior is unacceptable.

by Anonymousreply 32September 12, 2021 7:25 PM

Reminder: no matter what happens today I'm still GOAT.

by Anonymousreply 33September 12, 2021 7:29 PM

Medvedev is such a creep. Defaulted from a match for racism, throwing coins at the feet of a Jewish umpire, and I could believe that he tried to hook up with that girl. He is wealthy enough to hire a discreet escort but he must be getting off on the danger of cheating with someone underage.

by Anonymousreply 37September 12, 2021 8:05 PM

History has been made already. This is the FIRST match in his entire career (outside Belgrade Open) where he was the crowd favorite from the start. Wow. I'm verklempt.

This is Novak's 31st final and Meds 3rd. You could hear him gasping for air in the tunnel interview (which I hate and I'm sure ALL the players agree). He's nervous.

R126, Rafa's dealt with this foot injury for his whole career. He'll be back and has a shot at the FO for the next two years, I presume. I doubt he'll realistically be able to win any other Slam. Maybe an Open if the draw permits.

Fed is done. Hello fork.

Nole will almost assuredly win another few Slams. Unless Med uses this win as a launching pad to greatness. He certainly has the game.

by Anonymousreply 129September 12, 2021 11:14 PM

R128, agree completely. Novak’s whole career is about creating insurmountable obstacles and then overcoming them. He can win a few more Slams. I’m not sure whether Nadal can, that’s a big question mark. Federer has been effectively retired by age and injury.

That's laughable that Fed would have another Slam in his arsenal. He's over 40 and his grass season this year was barely a blip compared to his salad days. What's surprised me is that Djokovic in his skeletal state has avoided any injuries, even the wrist and elbow injuries that were plaguing him for a long while and only recover so much from surgery. Next year he'll be closer to 40 than 30. Age has got to take its toll soon.

by Anonymousreply 156September 13, 2021 1:35 AM

I’m ridiculously happy that nasty little prick was denied his “historic!” grand slam.

by Anonymousreply 157September 13, 2021 1:36 AM

Federer will never win another Slam.

Djokovic will win another three at least.

It's because of the aura and energy vibes he gets from the air and natural light.

It is amusing that Zverev was arguably playing the best tennis of his career by winning the gold medal and then Cincinnati but still flopping in a 5 set match. He just can't seem to get over the best of 5 hump. He lost in tough 4 sets to Djokovic at the AO, a tough5 setter to Tsitsipas at RG, a tough 5 to FAA at Wimbledon and a 5 setter to Djokovic at the USO including going down 0-5 before losing 2-6 in the 5th. Of course last year in the final he was 2 points away from the title but lost to Thiem.

by Anonymousreply 160September 13, 2021 1:48 AM

Djokovic demonstrated that he no longer has the endurance to recover from five-set matches like he used to. Father Time has overtaken him. Three more Slams ain't happening.

by Anonymousreply 163September 13, 2021 1:56 AM

maybe this will finally encourage the other guys on tour that they too can beat Djokovic at a slam. Would Medvedev have won today if Djokovic hadn't spent so much time on court earlier this tournament? Who knows but it finally proves he's human again, not some relentless robot who is unstoppable.

Indian Wells should be interesting but I bet Djokovic won't play

Novak's focus on mental health is much-criticized, especially by the cunts on DL, but I tell you what, his attitude after this loss -- watch his press conference if you don't believe me -- is remarkable. He will recover from this and have another great year next year. That said, Medvedev's win will inspire Zverev and Tsitsipas for sure. And Shapo and Sinner and those boys close behind.

Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic: “Before I am an athlete, I am an Orthodox Christian”

If we had a list of top athletes whose generosity is beyond question, then Novak Djokovic's name would certainly be on it.

At 34 years of age, Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic has won six Wimbledon titles, and 20 Grand Slam wins. Now he stands poised to become the first man since Rod Laver (1969) to win all four majors in the same year. If he does so he will surpass his rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal with a 21st Slam title, making him arguably the greatest men’s tennis player ever. It’s a safe bet that this man, who has dominated the world tennis elite for so long, has been able to find the energy he needs for competition thanks to his regular Bible reading.

The number 1 tennis player in the world is an Orthodox Christian, and he does not hesitate to say it publicly. It is not uncommon to observe Novak Djokovic invoking Christ during a meeting or wearing a cross around his neck to witness to his faith.

During the 2021 French Open, Djokovic was seen wearing a simple wooden cross, which is often seen dangling from his neck in many matches. After winning his exciting Wimbledon final against against Matteo Berrettini on Sunday, July 11, Djokovic looked skyward with arms wide open in thanksgiving. For him, his religious beliefs come before his many titles that he’s earned since the beginning of his career.

“This is the most important title of my life, because before being an athlete, I am an Orthodox Christian,” he said in April 2011, when he received the order of St. Sava in the first degree from the hands of Irenaeus, the Patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church. The order of St. Sava is the highest distinction in the Serbian Orthodox Church, and it was given to him especially for having contributed financially to the renovation of religious buildings in his native land, Serbia.

He finances a free restaurant for the poorest

A multi-millionaire thanks to his tournament winnings and numerous advertising contracts, Novak Djokovic willingly puts his fortune at the service of the underprivileged and helps causes that are dear to him. Judge for yourself. Last December, the Novak Djokovic Foundation, of which he is one of the main benefactors, contributed 94,000 euros for the renovation of a school in Pozega (Serbia).

In October of 2017, the tennis player announced the opening of a restaurant in Serbia offering free food to the homeless and the poor. “Money is not a problem for me. I have earned enough to feed all of Serbia. I think they deserve it after the support I received from them,” he said in a statement released at the time.

by Anonymousreply 174September 13, 2021 2:29 AM

The fate of the children of his country (where the minimum wage is set at less than 200 euros per month) particularly captures Novak Djokovic’s charitable attention. That is why, in 2015, his foundation joined forces with the World Bank to provide young Serbs with access to schooling and care. Welcoming his generosity, UNICEF rightly appointed him Goodwill Ambassador to Serbia in August 2015.

“Novak Djokovic is a true champion for children around the world. He shows that powerful voices and actions can make a difference for children, especially for the youngest,” said Yoka Brandt, deputy director of UNICEF.

An example for children around the world … and his family

As a faithful Christian who lived out his childhood in a country rife with violent conflict — the war between Bosnia and Herzegovina lasted from 1992 to 1995 — Novak Djokovic has never lost sight of his roots. And this is surely welcomed by his wife Jelena, whom he began dating in 2005, when they attended the same high school in Belgrade.

They made their marriage vows before God in July 2014, and their two children are named Stefan and Tara). We can imagine their home life will be an excellent school to learn not only tennis, but also generosity.

Orthodox Christian Novak Djokovic serves Jesus on and off the tennis court

Tennis superstar Novak Djokovic is through to the Australian Open final after beating an injured Roger Federer in a semi-final showdown on Rod Laver Arena last night.

Currently ranked number 2 in the world, Djokovic player is a well-known Orthodox Christian, who regularly wears a wooden cross around his neck. He’s known for praying through his matches as does his wife – a practice sports commenters observe with interest:

“He’s praying… his partner’s been praying throughout the night,” said Channel Nine commenter Tony Jones as Djokovic crossed openly prayed and looked heavenward leading up to playing his 2019’s championship point.

A proud Serb, Djokovic is a member of the Serbian Orthodox Church. However, after his Round 4 match of the Australian Open in 2009, Djokovic discovered the support of the wider Orthodox family, when supporters of Greek Cypriot player Marcos Baghdatis – a Greek Orthodox Christian – chanting his name.

“I have never experienced anything like this before in my life where my opponents team is chanting my name… we are Orthodox brothers,” an emotional Djokovic told Jim Courier in his post-match interview.

Yesterday’s Australian Open matches also saw the tournament exit of Romania’s Simone Halep – from her country’s Orthodox Church, who reportedly always carries an Orthodox icon when she travels.

In July last year, she took out the Women’s Championship and Djokovic took out the Men’s, causing some media commenters to dub it an “Orthodox Wimbledon” and discuss the impact eastern European Christians have had on the tennis world.

Djokovic occasionally jokes about his devotional practices with comments like how he prays for “plus fours” when he plays the card game Uno, there’s no doubt the player takes his faith very seriously.

In 2011, he received the Order of Saint Sava – the highest honour bestowed by the Serbian Orthodox Church – for his generosity and dedication to the religion.

“This award is certainly the most important I’ve ever got,” said Djokovic. “As an athlete and a religious person, it is hard for me to find appropriate words to describe my feelings of gratitude for the confidence I gain from the Holy Synod. I can only say that it can be earned only with hard work and self-belief, belief in your loved ones and in God.”

The Russian Orthodox Church also honoured Djokovic with a 2012 award for “Outstanding Activity in Strengthening Unity of Orthodox Christian Nations and for Consolidation and Promotion of Christian Values in the Life of Society.”

But for Djokovic and his wife Jelena, what matters most is using Djokovic’s influence and wealth to benefit those who need it the most – whether that means: rebuilding schools destroyed by natural disaster; donating to save a chapel in France; opening a restaurant with free food for the homeless and those in need; or working through the foundation his family established in 2007, which focuses on early childhood development by providing preschool education for underprivileged Serbian children.

“Right now, Novak has the power and the voice to raise the awareness and raise the funds for investment in preschool education programs and in the future we might not have this power,” Jelena told CNN.

And though Djokovic’s fame comes with the cost of being “on the radar” all the time with social media, Djokovic says this is an opportunity and a privilege, not a burden.

“Everything that you say, that you do is monitored… big brother,” he said. “Some people may look at that as a burden but I look at it as a great privilege and actually a great opportunity to use your platform to do something. To create a change that will be positive.”

“I think that athletes have huge power to change the world, as Nelson Mandela said, and I think that power can be used in a very positive way.”

Based on what? She has had exactly one good run so far. Coco has been steadily climbing up the rankings and scoring wins over top players. Did Leylah suddenly become smarter only at this tournament? She may be more cunning (and manipulative) than Coco but any tennis smarts could also be the result of her being two years older.

Coco can be annoying, but she's nowhere near the flat-out bitch that Fernandez is. Anyway, both of them have some serious flaws in their games to work on.

by Anonymousreply 191September 13, 2021 1:12 PM

Nole was prepared physically. It was the nerves. He was stiff and contracted throughout the entire match, paralyzed by the big moment. Quite ironic how he failed the only time the crowd was massively in his favor. Seeing him tearful on court before even the match ended was quite bad, if you think of all the work he put into this, losing it at the last stage...

Neither Djoko nor Serena, the two mentally strongest players of contemporary tennis, were able to make it, and this casts a light on how fucking monstrous Graf was to get the Golden Calendar Slam in 1988. What nerves of iron.

by Anonymousreply 195September 13, 2021 3:28 PM

I disagree, R192. Graf was at the height of her physical powers and had time on her side when she achieved the Grand Slam. Serena and Djokovic are both facing the reality of aging and the fact that their bodies won't deliver what they once did. For Djokovic that's an increasing reality, for Serena it's a foregone conclusion. It seemed like Djokovic's tears conceded to age and the declining prospect of keeping his peak level as much they flowed for anything else.

by Anonymousreply 196September 13, 2021 4:05 PM

Djokovic still won the other 3 grand slams this year and got to the final of the US Open and, even though he is aging, I suspect he still has a couple more grand slams in him, which cannot be said of Serena.

by Anonymousreply 197September 13, 2021 5:47 PM

I don't think Novak's age was the issue yesterday. Med played very good, and Novak succumbed to the pressure of trying to complete the Grand Slam. At times he almost look resigned to it. He made the final at the USO and won three other Slams this year. I don't think he's aging out yet.

Mi y Fed.

Late last night.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 200September 13, 2021 6:02 PM

I think it's more than just the pressure of the grand achievement for Djokovic. Both he and Nadal are having to face the fact that it takes their bodies longer to recover from those grueling five-setters. We'll have to wait until next year to see to what exten that's a factor for both.

by Anonymousreply 201September 13, 2021 6:18 PM

I think there was so much on the line for Novaxx in that final that his mind just froze. Physically, if he'd found himself in the same situation while "simply" going for a major he would probably have switched to killer mode and won at least one if not two sets (I doubt he would have pulled out a win, though), but with the GS on the line and Medvedev not giving him an inch he just couldn't make that mental switch. Which is exactly what happened to SWilliams in her semifinal against Vinci. When Vinci started coming at her and feeding off her fierce groundstrokes for winners, Williams just folded when she couldn't figure out another game plan to her usual "hit harder and make more noise." Djokovic, too, thought he could steady himself by getting into longer rallies, until he kept losing those, too. All that was left was serving and volleying (which worked to a certain extent but isn't a tactic he's comfortable with) and upping the groundstroke speed, which led to balls flying wide or into the net.

That sort of pressure fogs the mind up. Which, as someone mentioned above, makes Graf's GS so impressive and Rod Laver's two (I'll say that again, T-W-O!) GSs a feat beyond reckoning.

by Anonymousreply 202September 13, 2021 7:08 PM

Yes, and mental fog increases with age while endurance decreases. Coincidentally Serena and Djokovic both they missed their GS opportunities at the USO at around the same age, 34, which is old in tennis years even for a GOAT. That's pretty much the beginning of the end.

Graf won hers at 19. Laver won his at 24 and 31, bookending his peak years.

by Anonymousreply 203September 13, 2021 7:44 PM

They maybe weren't at their physical peaks, but I'd still it was mostly mental for Novak and Serena. Especially Serena - only best of three sets against a much lesser opponent where she WON the first set. Plus, she won Slams AFTER that US Open loss - over the next two years when she was even older (2016 Wimbledon and 2017 Australian Open).

by Anonymousreply 204September 13, 2021 7:51 PM

The big difference between Novak and Serena is that she gave birth, for which she had to take time out, and he won't ever have to do that.

by Anonymousreply 205September 13, 2021 7:52 PM

Serena's last Slam championship was at 35, Fed's at 36. After the mid-30s is when we can count even the GOATs out. We'll see if Nadal and Djokovic will change that stat.

by Anonymousreply 206September 13, 2021 8:03 PM

Most player's it's even earlier. More players are making their breakthroughs and playing better for longer, than in previous generations, but Fed, Nadal, Djokovic, Serena are still anomalies.

I don't believe that's Osaka at R243. There isn't a "like", "um" or "y'know" in the post.

by Anonymousreply 244September 14, 2021 4:27 AM

Actually Felix looks the best. Sharapova is wearing her habitual scowl.

by Anonymousreply 245September 14, 2021 4:39 AM

Understood that Felix is not among the IG pictures at R241, but he made the best showing for tennis players at the Met Gala.

by Anonymousreply 246September 14, 2021 4:40 AM

Felix looks like a cater waiter. Not that he looks bad - he's put together well. But he looks like a waiter. White coat, black pants will always look like a waiter. Plus, it's boring.

by Anonymousreply 247September 14, 2021 4:42 AM

I actually like the blue and purple dress that Osaka is wearing but the weird strap-coat and hair ruin the look.

by Anonymousreply 248September 14, 2021 5:05 AM

It's boring until you look more closely at the fabric and pattern of the jacket, R247. And the shoes and how the pants fit are definitely not boring.

by Anonymousreply 257September 14, 2021 7:51 AM

Emma looks great, she is very pretty, remember she is 18! Leylah should upgrade her look, the dress is too simple and looks "cheap" for Met Gala.

The ability to summon your best tennis becomes increasingly difficult as you get older. All the past greats have discussed it openly. Sometimes you catch fire during a tournament and it lasts, like Sampras did at the 2002 US Open to cap his career with one final Slam win. I wasn't surprised Djokovic had an off day. It highlights why the calendar year Grand Slam is so, so difficult. I think he was crying because he knew he just could not get there no matter how hard he tried. I'm sure the pressure was part of it. It had to be, like it was for Serena several years ago. Medvedev was playing lights out tennis, particularly on his serve, so Djokovic had to be at or near his best to have a shot on Sunday.

Medvedev did what Tsitsipas couldn't at the French Open earlier this year. When up two sets to love, he just kept taking care of his serve. Not a Medvedev fan at all, but he totally deserved that first Slam trophy given the way he played and who he was playing. He believed he could win. That's what it's going to take for all these young guys to also break through. Also, I don't think Medvedev will be like Thiem. I see him winning more Slams.

by Anonymousreply 282September 14, 2021 4:50 PM

looks like they got there very late.

Do you guys watch Ajla Tomljanovic's vblog? She has a thing on tennis life, I didn't know this but I saw a few videos this year. Matteo's in it a lot obviously. there was one where she baked cookies for him and felix in Matteo's apt in Monaco, it's like a college kid's apt, bare walls and shit everywhere.

In NYC, the day he's supposed to play Novak at night, he woke up the gf for breakfast but got yelled at and she went back to sleep, he said even the cleaning lady asked if everything was OK. they missed breakfast at the hotel so they had to go out to get breakfast later in the day(this was all in the video)...doesn't sound like this guy is very organized. He also needs a better agent, his watch sponsor is capri watch. I've never even heard of it.

by Anonymousreply 283September 14, 2021 4:52 PM

Medvedev deserved the win, he also had a very easy win prior to the final and he played during the day so he had extra time to rest.

Novak played a very tough game against the german asshole and it went on very late, I'm sure he didn't even get to sleep until 3 or 4 in the morning. Plus he's older, recovery is gonna be tougher.

I just don't think they should be playing at 1 or 2 am in the morning, it's too much.

by Anonymousreply 284September 14, 2021 4:55 PM

Venus looks royal! I can't believe this bitch has been doing it on the pro tour since 1994. Amazing.

by Anonymousreply 285September 14, 2021 5:07 PM

r281, Berrettini looks sooooo much better in a suit than in tennis togs. Those legs need covering up.

Oh, and Ajla is absolutely gorgeous off-court as well.

by Anonymousreply 286September 14, 2021 5:21 PM

R272 Lorenzo has the "he has a beautiful game" appeal, but right now he is basically a clay courter that didn't make anything outside clay. And unlike Alcaraz and Sinner his game is too defensive to be effective on hardcourts and grass right now.

Of course he is young and has talent, so he'll improve. And unlike Alcaraz and Sinner who are too nice guys, Lorenzo has a big personality and has zero problems having a fight with Dan Evans which is refreshing (specially if it's not associated with smashing raquets).

There are 4 players already qualified for the next gen finals Felix, Sinner, Alcaraz and Korda, but i think Felix and Sinner have chances to qualify for the nitto finals. Alcaraz is number 21 on the race to turin rankings

by Anonymousreply 294September 14, 2021 10:25 PM

So do the players have to pay taxes on that big check? over 2 million bucks. I think they have to pay ny taxes, don't they?

by Anonymousreply 295September 14, 2021 10:29 PM

The definitely have to pay taxes. And I'm sure some or all of it is taken out before they even get their official check. A LOT of players have official residence in Monaco for tax reasons, but I don't think it gets them out of all tax liability.

by Anonymousreply 296September 14, 2021 10:34 PM

I found this:

"The amount of tax money a tennis player will pay on prize money will depend exclusively on the location the money was earned, made, or received. After a player competes in Wimbledon, for instance, he or she is taxed according to U.K. taxation laws – regardless of where that player is from. If that same player competes in the French Open, he or she will be taxed according to French taxation laws, and so on. After the players pay taxes to the local government where the prize money was earned, they do not have to pay income tax on it again when they return back home. "

Ashleigh Barty to decide on relocated WTA Finals, says coach Tyzzer

"It's in Mexico at 1,500 metres and they're using pressureless balls," said Craig Tyzzer, coach to the world No. 1. By Kamakshi Tandon

Ashleigh Barty's coach says it will be difficult for the No. 1 to fly from Australia to play the WTA Finals, which have just been relocated to Guadalajara, Mexico.

The elite eight-player event that concludes the WTA season was initially planned to take place in in Shenzhen, China—where Barty won in her 2019 debut—but was cancelled in 2020 and had to find a new site for this season to avoid being cancelled again.

Barty's coach, Craig Tyzzer, was unsure about the altitude and conditions.

"It's in Mexico at 1,500 metres and they're using pressureless balls," he told AAP. "We were originally told it was Hong Kong and then we were told it was Prague and we hear it's in Mexico.

"I mean, it's not the greatest advertisement for the best girls in the world to be playing something they've never done before. In conditions they've never played, in a country they don't play and at altitude, I just feel it's ridiculous."

Barty is currently on vacation in Great Britain following her third-round exit at the US Open.

"She was physically and mentally exhausted," said Tyzzer. "So, I told her to just get away and have a holiday and just refresh everything."

The 25-year-old has not returned to Australia since playing the Australian Open because of the two-week quarantine requirement in the country. She is still considering playing Indian Wells, said Tyzzer, but also playing the WTA Finals could affect Barty's off-season—and potentially her start to next season.

A decision is likely this week, he added, saying, "It certainly isn't easy for us to get there and to play that event in Mexico and then to come back and have to do two weeks [quarantine] and then your summer is sort of ruined."

Barty has played 12 events this season and won four titles, and is likely to remain atop the WTA rankings regardless of whether she decides to defend her WTA Finals title.

His tone seems a bit rude, he pretty much all but called Guadalajara 'ghetto.' No, the conditions are not ideal, but I'm sure it was hard for a city to pick up the license for the WTA finals (Shenzhen pays $14million per year or something), knowing how low the viewership could be - and a field that won't include stars like Serena and probably not Osaka or Raducanu either. They are lucky it's being held at all after last year's disaster.

But where he has a point is that the schedule doesn't make sense. Barty would be going from Indian Wells, to Prague (indoors) for the Fed Cup finals, and then back to high altitude Guadalajara to play the next day. I fact the top 4 who have qualified for the YEC are all set to be in Prague for the BJK Cup (Barty, Sabalenka, Krejcikova, and Pliskova). Will they all pull out of one or the other?

The WTA is currently in Europe (Luxembourg, Potoroz, and then Ostrava 500) and then will go back to America (Chicago 500, Indian Wells), then back to Europe for tournaments like Kremlin Cup 500, Linz, Tenerife, Cluj-Napoca, Courmayeur, and the BJK finals in Prague. And then to fly back to Guadalajara to finish it off? Many of the players who are trying to get all the points they can to qualify for the final 8 will be wrecked. Compare it to the ATP. Laver Cup, San Diego, and Indian Wells are in North America but after that, the whole tour moves to Europe, including the ATP Finals and Davis Cup Finals. One calendar makes sense, the other does not.

by Anonymousreply 318September 15, 2021 4:19 PM

I love Guadalajara but it's not a tennis town. To hold it there is ridiculous. But I guess there aren't many places with open courts.

by Anonymousreply 319September 15, 2021 5:17 PM

They actually should just play it at Lake Nona. USTA lost a lot of money last year. It can make some of the deficit up by getting payments for hosting events. At first I was wondering why they were playing with pressureless balls at 1500 ft - which doesn't seem high enough for any issues to occur, but then realized it was 1500m - nearly 5000 feet.

by Anonymousreply 321September 15, 2021 5:47 PM

By the way where were you that night? Crying in the bathroom while that Canadian chick with the gigantic forehead was cleaning all the toilets? Anna's staff were regretting hiring that Lay-Low-Lah thang as assistant trainee maid for the evening. She just kept arguing all night, picking fights with everyone and trying to pose for photos. The funny thing about Osaka, who seems to be getting more attention right now for not playing, is that she is actually a great player. It's not like she is an Anna Kournikova, who was famous for being famous and actually more hype than substance.

Naomi has won more big titles than anyone besides Vee and Ree on the tour right now. If she got herself together and started to play like her old self again, no reason she couldn't at least match Granny Vee's record.

by Anonymousreply 357September 17, 2021 6:44 AM

I saw a picture where the co-chairs had to speak on stage...I wonder if that gave her a lot of anxiety. It was a picture of her reading from an index card in her hands and some other co-hair 6 feet from her.

I think she's a great player too, she can definitely beat the teenagers no problem but she needs to get in shape and proper fitness. She has the skills and talent but no will. what a fucking waste. I hope she wakes the fuck up before too late.

is kim clijsters making a comeback?

by Anonymousreply 358September 17, 2021 6:55 AM

I think Kournikova DID have substance. It's unfortunate she didn't win any singles titles, but she was often in the mix. She was no slouch, no easy win for any top player. She defeated Graf on a grass court. She had much doubles success.

by Anonymousreply 359September 17, 2021 11:03 AM

"I think she's a great player too, she can definitely beat the teenagers no problem" - is that why Fernandez beat her, r358?

by Anonymousreply 360September 17, 2021 12:38 PM

R360 He's saying that if Osaka focused on tennis, she would beat them. But she's distracted by her other commitments like sponsors and the Met Gala, doesn't want to play grass/clay, isn't really committed to tennis..

by Anonymousreply 361September 17, 2021 12:46 PM

Actually r361, he said if she got into shape and was fully fit, but that's a problem for a lot of women players: aggressive baseline play based on muscle rather than an all-round game that requires greater nimbleness.

by Anonymousreply 362September 17, 2021 1:36 PM

I am co-hair.

by Anonymousreply 363September 17, 2021 1:42 PM

Right now Osaka gets a lot of attention without playing, but all her success is built around being a tennis player, a successful one, without that the fame will vanish in no time

by Anonymousreply 364September 17, 2021 6:30 PM

Kenin should not come back before I W

by Anonymousreply 365September 18, 2021 3:16 AM

I hope Naomi doesn't waste her talent and potential by giving up, not getting into shape and blaming everything on her distractions. Obviously what happened to Monica was horrifying and a lot worse but I never got over how much greater she could have been in spite of the stabbing if only she had gotten fit in 98. She was understandably not focused on tennis at all until May 98 due to her dad's terminal illness but she was only 24 at the time. Moni coulda had five or six more years of contending for Slams if she hadn't been out of shape.

I like Naomi as a player, so I don't want to see another favorite squandering her best years. In some ways it almost feels like the asshole Serena did a number on Naomi by her outbursts and cunty behavior during Naomi's first Slam final. Being booed by the fans (indirectly) and then having to listen to the ignorant, clueless, diversity hire, Katrina Adams, actually say to the fans that everyone wanted a different outcome (Serena winning) probably made Naomi even more of an emotional mess than before.

by Anonymousreply 366September 18, 2021 8:21 AM

Ugh, I did not know that Adams said that. That is so tasteless.

by Anonymousreply 367September 18, 2021 8:32 AM

Naomi is a crowd favorite especially since last year. She freaked herself out by not wanting to do press during RG, then pulled out of the event and hasn't been the same since she returned on the summer hardcourts. It has nothing to do with Serena

by Anonymousreply 368September 18, 2021 9:09 AM

R366, Osaka's win over Serena was in 2018, enough time ago for her to have got over it, yet Serena is her tennis idol. I would understand if the furore over Serena supposedly losing to her in 2018 because of a "racist" umpire had pissed Osaka off but she has no problem ascribing to exactly the same woke mentality that tried to justify Serena's outbursts and appalling behaviour in that match.

by Anonymousreply 369September 18, 2021 9:13 AM
but she has no problem ascribing to exactly the same woke mentality that tried to justify Serena's outbursts and appalling behaviour in that match.

The funny thing about the (permanently) angry wokesters calling the umpire racist is that if the roles had been reversed they would all have been supporting the umpire. Imagine a black female umpire being subject to such an outburst from a white male player for exactly the same offence and penalty. In that situation the same people supporting Serena would argue that the umpire was being fair and doing the right thing by issuing a warning and they would criticize the player for his arrogance and entitlement.

by Anonymousreply 370September 18, 2021 9:25 AM

R370 I've thought about how much worse the reaction would have been if the linesperson had been white. But it was an Asian woman! So Serena really did not come off well at all to anyone much.

by Anonymousreply 371September 18, 2021 9:36 AM

Both Serena and Osaka are toxic and bad for tennis.

by Anonymousreply 372September 18, 2021 9:36 AM

I'm surprised it's still a discussion. Serena's behaviour was embarrassing, and regardless of the decisions in that match - just in general, Carlos isn't the greatest umpire. Serena has beaten Naomi since, and Naomi has beaten Serena since. Time moves on, everyone grows older.

There's not much more to it.

by Anonymousreply 373September 18, 2021 10:17 AM

The expectations and hype surrounding Emma are completely over the top now. I wouldn't be surprised if she finds herself unable to cope and never wins a tournament again. I feel she will crash and burn in the first round at Wimbledon next year.

by Anonymousreply 374September 18, 2021 11:32 AM

LOL at Barty coach calling Guadalajara ghetto and unfit to host the Peak WTA finals. They should just pick a lucky winner put of a bowl and name her Peak WTA finals champion.

by Anonymousreply 375September 18, 2021 11:35 AM

R374 = Leylah

by Anonymousreply 376September 18, 2021 12:34 PM

I don't think there are so many expectations on Emma in terms of tennis, r374. A lot of the talk is about her potential sponsorships. More of a worry is intrusion into her private life because she's so gorgeous, but she's 18 and just finished school so probably doesn't have much of one yet anyway.

by Anonymousreply 377September 18, 2021 12:39 PM

R374 I think she'll struggle next year.

That title could be too soon for Leylah, but for Emma was simply a big title at the beginning of the road. She'll struggle for sure but if she is strong enough she'll land on her feet

by Anonymousreply 378September 18, 2021 12:42 PM

I mean, Emma is not American nor has she been proclaimed the next champion of woke, so there isn't the same pressure on her to be the GOAT, the best player ever, the next Serena/CoCo, etc. like there is on American players. I categorise Naomi as an American player here, because America built her up in that way.

Emma is a Brit and we never really expect to win at these things and even when we do we don't really expect it will happen again so it's a bonus if it does.

by Anonymousreply 379September 18, 2021 12:42 PM

Every player will struggle r378, that's the nature of top-level championships. But at least we in the UK aren't putting a lot of pressure on her young shoulders, as happens with young American players (I include Naomi in this category). Emma is also very laid back, she'll take it in her stride. Of course there will be great interest in how she does from now on but no one is expecting her always to be a number one winner, as Americans expect of their players. She'll win some and she'll lose some.

by Anonymousreply 380September 18, 2021 12:46 PM

It will be fun to see CoCo rise to the occasion now and try to reestablish herself as the 🐐 prospect now that Emma and Saggy Tits have both kinda stolen her thunder a bit.

by Anonymousreply 381September 18, 2021 12:47 PM

Poor CoCo couldn’t even muster up a doubles win. Her thunder has already been stolen.

by Anonymousreply 382September 18, 2021 2:21 PM

yes, Emma may be young and pretty but in one of the pictures of her holding the trophy, her mouth is full of herpes sores, one big one on upper lip, 2 small ones on the bottom. so fucking gross! She's may look sweet and innocent but who knows? In many of her pictures, she is usually hanging out with a group of boys, only 2 girls present. like 8 boys and 2 girls.

she has already trademarked her name and started social media in China, a potentially huge market. She has almost 2 million followers on insta, more than Thiem, Medvedev, Zverev and Tsitsipas.

I don't like ball bashers, but Ostapenko is the exception for me. When she's "on" her game is so beautiful to watch, with the way she hooks the ball with the forehand, the sharpness of her precise hitting. Hope she wins.

by Anonymousreply 398September 18, 2021 7:59 PM

She plays against Tauson, the girl who defeated Leylah in the Australian open junior final.

It's curious because Tauson was clearly a better junior but she was always behind in their pro career. She has a great forehand and a spoiled diva attitude (it's pretty common on top juniors)

These lunatic sponsors spent a fortune on that crazy Laura Robson

We all know how that turned out.

by Anonymousreply 407September 19, 2021 1:22 AM

R380 you can't be serious. The UK will be putting enormous pressure on Raducanu when Wimbledon comes around just like they did with fop Laura Robson, solid top player but not slam champ Henman and Murray who was the rare Brit able to get the job done. Raducanu had an amazing achievement at this year's USO but the British media and all the endorsements she's going to get will weigh on her if she can't consistently win big tournaments in the next 2 years.

by Anonymousreply 408September 19, 2021 3:06 AM

by Anonymousreply 412September 19, 2021 4:36 AM

All the talk in the UK is about not putting unreasonable pressure on her, r408. She also helps in that by having a very down to earth personality.

by Anonymousreply 413September 19, 2021 6:39 AM

Ironically, the fact that Emma came literally out of nowhere to win the US Open means there will be less pressure on her. The pressure on young UK rising tennis stars was literally that, that they were rising. They'd get past the first few rounds and then hype would be created around how they could get through to the semis and then the final and then win the whole thing. Emma will have less of that now. Of course there will be hopes and hype about future grand slams, but that's normal. She's not coming under the kind of pressure US players do.

by Anonymousreply 414September 19, 2021 7:33 AM

the tv ratings are out, women's final is more popular than men's!

Emma Raducanu and Leylah Fernandez, averaged 2.44 million viewers, peak 3.4 million viewers at 6-6:15 p.m. ET, ESPN’s highest peak of the tournament.

Djokovic vs. Medvedev, averaged 2.05 million viewers, peaked at 2.7 million viewers at 6:15-30 p.m

by Anonymousreply 415September 19, 2021 7:44 AM

R416, your words are LITERAL VIOLENCE. I can't even.

by Anonymousreply 417September 19, 2021 8:46 AM

R412 I recently saw Dani V in some woman's box (I mean players box, not clam box). Can't remember who it was. Maybe he's all loose and used used up and nobody on the ATP wants him anymore....

by Anonymousreply 418September 19, 2021 11:41 AM

She is talented and young, but there are still many chances she won't back this up with future slam wins (I mention this because it was mentioned in the article). The WTA can be very random. And in fact she hasn't even won a WTA tour level match yet. I hope all of this isn't too premature.

On the other hand, if she turns out to be the real deal she could make womens tennis HUGE.

by Anonymousreply 419September 19, 2021 11:45 AM

R414 That's not true. She skipped a lot of steps into becoming a big star, so she is at the end of the road without even starting. That's a lot of pressure.

She was not even top 100, she is bound to fail for a while before (hopefully) finding her place on the circuit

by Anonymousreply 420September 19, 2021 1:14 PM

R419, what do you mean by "real deal"? I think the problem is this idea - which is particularly deep-rooted in the US - that a young tennis player who shows great promise must become the next GOAT. Part of the problem is that for the past 20 years men's and women's tennis has been dominated by 3 players among the men and 1-2 players among the women.

It's ok, Emma doesn't have to win everything. In the coming years, she'll win tournaments, maybe a couple more grand slams, might even hit number one for a while. There's also Leylah, who has a great career ahead of her too. What will be good for women's tennis - and men's tennis - is having several top players, not just Federer-Nadal-Djokovic and Serena.

by Anonymousreply 422September 19, 2021 2:26 PM

R421 I mean a genuine top player worthy of this sort of hype and attention. She doesn't have to be the next GOAT (and I agree that sort of pressure put on young breakthroughs is ridiculous) or even win more grand slams, though the article suggests that. It's really the rivalries that keep people interested in the sport too, so yes, this group of young players coming up together is great, IF (and it's a big 'if') they ever actually play each other and consistently contend for big titles against each other.

But they are throwing so much money and attention at someone who hasn't won a WTA match yet. Ostapenko won a slam, did okay for the rest of that year and then languished near the bottom of the top 100 until finally winning a 500 and above tournament this year (Eastbourne). It's rare she makes it out of Round 2. Iva Majoli won a slam young and didn't last long either. Sloane had a lot of media attention and did make another slam final but despite all of that she has barely won matches back to back for the past few seasons. Kenin seems to be going down the same path. The WTA is littered with these cases.

Wouldn't it be wise for these companies to make sure the client has some sort of longevity before giving them a multi year contract? It's like Anisimova's $100million dollar Nike contract at 16. Obviously she doesn't get all of that upfront, but they were expecting their next Sharapova. And while she's young still, she's not getting much better or showing signs she is going to be one of the greats.

by Anonymousreply 423September 19, 2021 2:29 PM

R423, who is throwing what at Emma? As far as I'm aware she hasn't signed any new sponsorship deals. There's a lot of blah blah about her endorsement earnings potential but, let's be honest, a lot of that is because she's hot and speaks Mandarin.

by Anonymousreply 424September 19, 2021 2:38 PM

I doubt that Fernandez is going to have a great career or even a good one. A lot of things needed to fall into place for her to reach the Open final, but she will need incredible luck to have another draw like that where every top player chokes. Especially now that she is a known entity and won't have the luxury of playing without any pressure while her opponent folds.

If she tried her obnoxious, arrogant pandering at the other events, she will get booed mercilessly especially in Paris where the fans can be brutal. Her gutter fighter personality will only take her so far.

by Anonymousreply 425September 19, 2021 2:40 PM

If tennis doesn't work out for Emma, she can always go to university. Her plan B was to study law.

by Anonymousreply 426September 19, 2021 2:44 PM

It's way too early to say which direction Raducanu's career will go. No one knows because she is so new on tour. She's going to face immense pressure to back up her USO win. People will give her a year but after that if she hasn't started winning other big tournaments, the media will turn on her as they have others. I hope she is playing Indian Wells in 2 weeks because I want to see her take on other slam champions. She is unproven against them as so far her biggest wins are solid top players Bencic and Sakkari.

by Anonymousreply 427September 19, 2021 4:59 PM

by Anonymousreply 429September 19, 2021 5:05 PM

Who have the media "turned on", r427?

by Anonymousreply 430September 19, 2021 5:45 PM

R430 uh you see criticisms of players who won a slam and never were able to back it up especially if they were hyped up to be consistent top players

by Anonymousreply 431September 19, 2021 6:03 PM

R425 Unlike Emma, Leylah defeated some of the top players on her route the final so we already know she can be competitive. Yes, she needs to improve her serve but her game was enough to defeat those players without a great serve (Alcaraz doesn't have a great serve either but he was able to defeat Tsitsipas).

Raducanu run was impressive but she has a quite easy path to the finals and frankly i want to watch her against an in form ballbasher before declare her the next best thing.

And of course there's a lot of other things, Andreescu has the game and the attitude but her body fails her again and again

by Anonymousreply 432September 19, 2021 6:31 PM

r432, she's too fat and she loves to party too much.

by Anonymousreply 433September 19, 2021 6:33 PM

by Anonymousreply 434September 19, 2021 7:15 PM

So what, r431? Everyone in the public eye knows they are open to criticism. Does it really matter if Emma gets some negative commentary from some media commentators? It won't mean anything. She's already brushed aside stupid comments from Piers Morgan and John McEnroe.

by Anonymousreply 435September 19, 2021 7:36 PM

That Tausin-Ostapenko final was really a battle of the brats. Both of them look like they’d be impossible to coach. I’ve rarely seen so many line challenges, most of which they lost.

Ostapenko’s dismissive handshake was as expected for a sourpuss like her, especially after winning the tournament last year.

Luxembourg, indoor tennis tournament has been cancelled after it's 25th edition thanks to non cooperation and arrogance of WTA officials

These WTA people can not even retain their old and popular tournament due to their incompetence but God forbid one ATP member even dare to question subsidisation of WTA by ATP.

by Anonymousreply 439September 20, 2021 1:16 PM

The WTA organisation is ridiculously bad at their job. After selling off half the tour to China, they are barely operating at a profit since the return of tennis. The truth was made clear last year when Barbara Rittner had MULTIPLE tournaments organised and ready to go (for both WTA and ATP), when most countries did not want to host international sporting events. The ATP tournaments were played and successful, and she said the WTA never really gave her an answer and were a logistical nightmare to communicate with. Why would anyone want to invest with them?

The fault is not with the 'product' (although it could certainly use some improvements), and I think we will see that when the big 3 retire and Raducanu/Osaka etc are more recognised than their male counterparts. The fault is with the organisation itself. And even though the WTA has all these young, attractive slam winners or marketable players (Gauff included), the ATP does a *much* better job at selling their product and advertising their athletes.

LOL. Another day, another reason the WTA is incompetent. I wonder if Octagon/Guadalajara didn't go to them, would they have even tried to organise anything? Two years in a row without a YEC... did they think Shenzhen was still on? This is who Barty's coach should direct his anger at (especially regarding the messy calendar).

They actually had the ceremony in Guadalajara today to officially announce it - the biggest event in womens tennis and the biggest prize money in both tennis (male and female) and womens sport in general - and not one representative from the WTA showed up. They released a statement saying they had planned to, but declined to give an actual reason. It's not even that far from their HQ.

They need to clean house and hire all new staff. This is getting embarrassing.

R450 He was the king of wc, but in the end the little homophobe seems to be a really hard working player and did his work on challengers and now he is in seriously good form. He is still far from Alcaraz right now but it seems there'll be two top 100 players born in 2003 pretty soon

by Anonymousreply 458September 21, 2021 6:48 PM

R453 Nobody looks good with that haircut but more and more players are sporting it
UGOAT Team or Misery Team?

Murray won and will play Popsicle next

In his post-match interview he said: [italic]"One of the things I find quite difficult the last few years when I've been not on the tour that much.. I don't know the so many of the players that well. It's difficult to find a way to win against them. But I had a good game plan,I executed it well."[/italic]

Feli turns 40...

by Anonymousreply 461September 21, 2021 8:52 PM

Feli really is the Disney Prince of the ATP Tour. Talk about swashbuckling. If pushed I'd have to say he was at his peak hotness in 2011.

Thanks for that R461. Those two rallies against Llodra and Sock, in particular, were things of exquisite beauty.

by Anonymousreply 462September 22, 2021 4:48 PM

In my experience, Feli had the best ass on tour.

by Anonymousreply 466September 23, 2021 12:30 AM

It was nice to see Misery play against Popsicle today. I'm glad he won and hope he can sustain his play, health and form. Popsicle was nice eye candy but Misery wasn't looking bad either.

Osaka did say she was taking a break. Hopefully all the tennis industry people and sponsors who invested so heavily in her and tried to build her up as some great tennis icon are realising that she's a liability.

by Anonymousreply 470September 23, 2021 11:44 AM

Hubie's always so neatly turned out. Such a lovely young man! A real credit to his mother. I can't wait to meet Mrs Hurkacz!

Emma Raducano splits from coach.....That did not take long. Her words “I feel like at this stage of my career I really need someone that has had that WTA experience at the high levels,” she added. “I’m looking for someone who has been at that level and knows what it takes. And especially right now, because I’m so new to it.”

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 473September 24, 2021 2:57 PM

R473 I think it’s a good sign that she’s not being sentimental about it, she’s right that she needs someone with more high level experience

by Anonymousreply 474September 24, 2021 3:10 PM

Patrick Mouratoglou will be sitting in her box in no time.

Simona Halep's coach, Darren Cahill, become available. as of 2 days ago. Coincidence?

by Anonymousreply 476September 24, 2021 3:38 PM

Patrick is probably kicking himself for not leeching onto Emma already.

by Anonymousreply 477September 24, 2021 4:24 PM

I’m surprised he has any.

by Anonymousreply 480September 24, 2021 6:22 PM

Halep fired Cahill!? I had not heard that! I will Google it.

In other news, hottie Caspar Ruud won his match at Laver Cup.

by Anonymousreply 481September 24, 2021 8:42 PM

Berretteami/A. Zverev team or Isner/Shapo team?

by Anonymousreply 482September 25, 2021 3:20 AM

Unfair media treatment of Raducanu 'splitting with her coach'. Her dad wanted someone she was familiar with after the pressure got to her at Wimbledon (they did not anticipate her winning the USO - they'd booked flights back after qualifying), so Andrew Richardson agreed to go as a one-off just for the US Open. He coaches juniors and coached her as a kid.

Richardson has a promising 10 year old son he is more focused on developing as well as already has a job being in charge of junior development.

by Anonymousreply 483September 25, 2021 6:43 AM

Btw, interesting factoid: Andrew Richardson was Tim Henman's best man at his wedding. They are both hot daddies now.
Andrew Richardson was Tim Henman's best man at his wedding

by Anonymousreply 486September 25, 2021 4:00 PM

Anyone watching Laver Cup? I realize I’m a little late to the party but how is this possibly fair? Team Europe has 6 of the top 10 and Team World has only 1 —no wonder it’s a rout. Not much fun to be had here with the competition so lopsided.

by Anonymousreply 487September 26, 2021 2:26 AM

R487, men's tennis has been dominated by Europeans for many years, so it's not a surprise. Laver Cup is a marketing gimmick, so don't take it too seriously.

by Anonymousreply 488September 26, 2021 2:28 AM

R488 IT IS NOT!

by Anonymousreply 489September 26, 2021 2:52 AM

Thanks R488 - won’t take it too seriously. I just feel bad for the World team.

by Anonymousreply 490September 26, 2021 6:26 AM

Rafa's dad said that he think Rafa will be ready for the Aussie.

Please for the love of Laver, Borg and Nastase, may a miracle occur and let Rafa win Oz for the second time.

In Agassi's name,

Amen

by Anonymousreply 491September 26, 2021 9:29 AM

Nastase and Agassi?!

by Anonymousreply 492September 26, 2021 5:28 PM

R492, for Nastase, I just like how his name sounds.

And Agassi is certainly an all time great. How dare you insinuate otherwise!

by Anonymousreply 493September 26, 2021 5:44 PM

No beef with you on Agassi's accomplishments. He was just a bit of a bad boy before he fell down and got back up.

by Anonymousreply 494September 26, 2021 5:48 PM

Federer and Roddick sitting together at Laver Cup. I'm not surprised their wives are not there with them.

Barty pulls out…

of Indian Wells.

by Anonymousreply 496September 27, 2021 9:57 PM

Hsieh def. Clijsters 6-3 5-7 6-3 Both had plenty of break points. Hsieh despite her lack of power is not who you want to face in your comeback match since her style is so different from everyone else on tour. I hope Clijsters stays healthy and plays Indian Wells next week

by Anonymousreply 497September 28, 2021 7:45 AM

R497 Is Kim still fat? The last time we saw her play, she was fat.

by Anonymousreply 498September 28, 2021 1:10 PM

by Anonymousreply 501September 28, 2021 2:28 PM

Oh, so she's just more porcine than usual.

by Anonymousreply 502September 28, 2021 2:31 PM

But Serena has shown everyone that you can be borderline obese and still make the final rounds if not the finals of GSs and other major tournaments. Why shouldn't Kim be able to?

by Anonymousreply 503September 28, 2021 3:06 PM

Kim has been gone from game for so long, she forgot that "double bagel" refers to the score not training diet.
