Snooze-fest lineup, although Radacanu is exciting
If Sabalenka doesn’t nab this slam she’s never winning one
by Anonymous | reply 1 | September 9, 2021 11:26 PM |
Sabalenka just obliterates the ball lol
by Anonymous | reply 2 | September 9, 2021 11:32 PM |
Sabalenka reminds me of Petrova but with more power, a bigger grunt and Petrova was a bit better at net though Sabalenka has done well in doubles too. They have similar builds

I like the black dagger back of Sakkari's top but overall the navy-red nike outfit is much more flattering.

lol Bouchard must feel like shit now. She became the most successful female Canadian player in 2014 by reaching the RG SF And Wimbledon F then her game fell apart. Then she had that weird fall at the USO resulting in a lawsuit and her game hasn't recovered. She's out on rehab now after surgery. Meanwhile Andreescu passed her by by winning IW, Canada and the USO. Now Fernandez has at the very least matched her slam finalist achievement and did it at a younger age too

First qualifier to reach a slam final.
Is this the first double unseeded slam final?
and definitely first final between 2 players of Asian descent
just incredible

by Anonymous | reply 34 | September 10, 2021 3:52 AM |
I think Fernandez will win the final. Raducanu hasn't had to play any three setters or tight matches yet. The Canadian brat, who seems like the kind who would gladly slit someone's throat and set them on fire if that's what it took, is like a gutter fighter who will intimidate, cheat, stall and do whatever it takes to win. Raducanu will fall apart and lose in straight sets.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | September 10, 2021 3:52 AM |
has to be a record if Raducanu wins the title, I can't think of anyone else who won a slam faster than her. This is only her 4th main draw tournament and 2nd slam. Andreescu won the USO also on her debut and her 4th slam appearance overall

I don’t know why I dislike Laylah so much — but I do. Can’t help it. I think it’s partially the smug, self-satisfied mannerisms that are reminiscent of Sharapova. Hated her on sight too.

by Anonymous | reply 56 | September 10, 2021 4:29 AM |
I like Fernandez since there are so few female (and male) players these days who have that, for the lack of a better word, voracity to win that's reflected in their attitude on the court, even when you look into their eyes. Serena, Monica, Steffi, Justine, hell even Sharapova had it. On the men's side, Djokovic and Nadal are prime examples. And that comes from the knowledge that you have what it takes to dig deep, physically and mentally, and crush your opponent as soon as you see the opening, that you can grind them down on the court, even when you're not playing near your best level. That's what separates a multiple slam winner from your average top 10 player. I've seen some of that in Fernandez in this tournament but whether it's a quality she can nurture to become, in the long run, a player in that category, well, it's yet to be seen.

What R80 said.
Not surprised really at Sabalenka's collapse, more surprised at the incredible LACK of nerves by Leylah. She really reminds me of Hingis in 1997.
I am surprised by the shellacking Emma gave Mario. I didn't see the match, was the Greek just tighter than a drum all match? She was playing lights-out tennis until last night.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | September 10, 2021 11:20 AM |
I kind of love that these two teens are giving us the anti-Naomi story, that professional sport is NOT about honoring feelings and fragility but about ramming the ball down the other guy’s throat.

R82 Maria was a bit tight but Emma out hit her and out steadied her. She hit some great shots and served well. The straight sets result is a bit of both Emma's stellar play and Maria not bringing her best.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | September 10, 2021 12:53 PM |
Team Leylah! For some reason I love her cocky attitude.
OTOH - I haven’t been able to stand Emma since the match against Ajla - when she had a panic attack and left the court and we were all supposed to pretend she was dying instead of freaking out because she was losing…
Reminded me too much of Naomi and how we aren’t allowed to question her actions at all.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | September 10, 2021 1:20 PM |
I saw an interview with her dad on the tv show, her dad is supposedly in FL. He spoke perfect English and said that her attitude stemmed from being cut from some program, they didn't think she was good enough...so she has this attitude of proving people wrong and believing in herself.
She calls him every night to talk about tennis.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | September 10, 2021 1:36 PM |
last time 2 teenagers played, the younger one beat the older one. I'm going with the same thing this time around.
As that other poster said, Emma is gonna attack Lelah's serve, it's not that great.

Sablenka said in her post match interview that she had many opportunities but didn't take them. she said lelah played great. She didn't do anything extra special. Sablenka said she destroyed herself, (her English isn't the best), but basically she said she lost the match, she had many chances but didn't take them. Lelah didn't do anything special in her opinion.

Lelah said her family sacrificed a lot for her dreams, he mother had to move to CA when she was 10 -13 to work and support the family, not sure what the father does, I guess she's gonna have to support the whole family. Her sister plays tennis as well. She definitely wants it more...she said she still remembers the teacher who told her to concentrate on school and not tennis, that she'd never make it etc. (from post match interview)
both of the girls handled the interviews very well.

Coco Gauff-Caty McNally friendship fueling deep US Open doubles run
Coco Gauff and Caty McNally ascended to the top of the women’s doubles teams almost as quickly as their friendship formed.
The teenage duo’s tear through the 2021 U.S. Open continued Wednesday afternoon, when they knocked off the top-seeded team of Elise Mertens and Su-wei Hsieh to reach their first-ever Grand Slam semifinal in doubles. Gauff and McNally, the No. 11 seed, will face Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski and Brazil’s Luisa Stefani on Friday.
“We didn’t talk that much. We didn’t talk at all,” McNally said after the win Wednesday of the first time she met Gauff at a U.S. Tennis Association training session in Orlando, Fla.
Chimed in Gauff, who was sitting beside McNally during their press conference: “I was younger than all you guys, I was the youngest of the bunch. I was scared of all of you.”
The two giggled and interrupted each other like a couple of normal 19- and 17-year-olds, respectively. But there is nothing normal about coming off one of the grandest stages in tennis after upsetting the No. 1 seed and 2021 Wimbledon champions.
McNally and Gauff, who have been dubbed “McCoco,” first played together three years ago, winning the U.S. Open doubles title. They continued to pair up and have won three WTA titles since 2019, while reaching the quarterfinals of the Australian Open twice.
It’s a stark contrast to their upcoming opponents, who played in their first tournament together just a month ago. The 29-year-old Dabrowski and 24-year-old Stefani defeated the Czech team of Marie Bouzkova and Lucie Hradecka, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, at Louis Armstrong Stadium on Wednesday to advance to the semifinals.
After competing as a team for the first time in San Jose, Calif., in August, when they won three matches on their way to a finals berth, Dabrowski and Stefani went on to win the WTA 1000 event in Montreal. The two then made the final of another WTA 1000 in Cincinnati before losing to Samantha Stosur and Shuai Zhang.
McNally and Gauff have different strengths that seem to complement each other, but both like to play aggressive tennis. While McNally is the stronger server, and the steadier volleyer, Gauff is better along the baseline.
As teenagers dominate the headlines at the U.S. Open, with Leylah Fernandez and Emma Raducanu in the women’s singles semifinals, McNally and Gauff have an opportunity to continue the trend.
“I think the first time we played here [together] in juniors a couple years ago, from the start I think everyone knew there was something special,” McNally said. “I think we knew there was something special with the way we got along, kind of just clicked. We always pick each other up. [Wednesday], there were times I got down. Coco was able to really pick me up.”

You would never tell it the way she has been playing this fortnight and she absolutely looks and carries herself on the court like a seasoned pro with tons of titles under her belt but Emma Raducanu is yet to win a WTA Tour match.

It's true. I wouldnt call Leylah's game special. She is solid when she needs to be, has great finesse and is tenacious. Serve isn't that strong and she wont hit you off the court.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | September 10, 2021 3:13 PM |
Lelah can definitely improve, she has great drive, attitude and mental toughness so she has a lot on her side.
by Anonymous | reply 103 | September 10, 2021 3:22 PM |
Leylah has great anticipation and great hands. She also has great placement and can put the ball on a dime. And she has NO NERVES. That's special. I think she can be overpower, like Hingis was overpowered by Davenport, Serena and Venus. But it takes a player with good nerves.

And of course the backlash will be inmense if the suspend him when she didn't even sue him
by Anonymous | reply 119 | September 10, 2021 8:11 PM |
R119, oh, I suspect that there will be no backlash. And the ATP is entitled to make its own findings of fact. It doesn’t have to rely on the courts.
But back to the match: Felix seems to have picked up his game.
by Anonymous | reply 120 | September 10, 2021 8:17 PM |
R120 Are you fucking kidding me, you can't suspend someone just because her girlfriend says he is an abuser. You need proof of that, you need the guy to found guilty on court. And yes, there'll be backlash.

[quote] Arantxa was the toughest player out there, she was not remotely as talented as Graf, Navratilova or Seles, and she played on an era of incredibly clutch players but she was able to suceed anyway using[bold] the best of her weapons[/bold]
The best weapon in her arsenal (and Graff's) was Günther Parche's knife. Without that weapon the lucky bitch would have been lucky to win even one major.

by Anonymous | reply 126 | September 10, 2021 8:32 PM |
R124 Oh Monica, don't be such bitch, Arantxa won her first GS before you were a thing, and the last one against yourself.
Arantxa was the fastest player, she had a great backhand and a very good smash and volley. Playing against her was like playing against a wall. Graf and Seles were lucky her serve and forehand were subpar

R127, her last Slam was against post-stabbing Seles who had just lost her father a week before France Open. Without the bastard Parche, Seles would have won every major from France Open 93 to USA Open 99. Maybe only one or two losses in between to Mary Pierce or Venus. Aranxta would have been fighting for bullshit titles like Egypt Open.

FAA's GS record is still ahead of Federer's when he was Felix's age.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | September 10, 2021 9:22 PM |
Oh well, this match has showed what we already all knew: FAA can win any point against anyone when it's an unimportant point but can't win a point for his life when the going gets rough.
I hear his coach is Frederic Fontang, a former French tennis player. Felix: ditch the French coach who probably tells you le tennis selon La Monf: "why win a match when winning all the crazy points is all I need to be happy?

So apparently the new nickname of Zverev over at tennis warehouse is "Goldie Chainz". I dig that.
And tonight I'm team Novak because basically I dislike both players, but Djokovic being qualified for the final would bring extra extra flavor to the tournament given what is at stake. Odds-wise I'm thinking 55-45 for Novak tonight.

He uses the first set to assess the opponent but this is why he can't medal. There isn't a set to just carelessly used to gather information.

r162 Milos should focus on his own game and mind his own business. The ATP is not the police.
by Anonymous | reply 164 | September 11, 2021 12:37 AM |
The reason Fed, Nadal, Djokovic have 20 Slams is because they can win when they're playing at 75-80% of their capabilities. Players rarely play their "best." If they did, it would be their "average" level of play, not their "best." The top dogs can play below their best and win most of their matches.
Zverev has the physical game to beat Novak, but I don't think he can sustain it mentally over a best of five set match. That's a dynamic we don't see in women's tennis - the difference between best of five and best of three. The men basically play best of three outside of Slams and then have to adjust to best of five during Slams. There used to be more best of five matches during the "regular season" - many tournaments had best of five matches in the finals after playing best of three the rest of the tournament. Back in the 80s/early 90s, they had events like the WTC Dallas or the Lipton Championships (today's Miami Masters) which played best of five every round. Beating a top player is an entirely different task when it's best of five.

I really want the men's game to start getting unpredictable. Regardless of what the dumbass announcers say, the men's game has been in desperate need of new slam winners for at least 5 years now. Last year was such a weird letdown with Thiem taking advantage of Djokovic's default. This year FAA was a nice surprise but the other 3 semifinalists were expected obviously

unless Djokovic is an error machine in the final, I really don't see what Medvedev is going to do to stop him. Medvedev isn't as aggressive as Zverev. He plays very far back like Murray but without Murray's net prowess or willingness to come in unless it's super easy put-away. We saw what happened during the AO final when Djokovic demolished him and took advantage of Medvedev's defensive court positioning

I may be wrong but I think the 2011 final was on 9/11. Queen Latifah was invited to sing before the final to mark the ten year anniversary. Serena then lost the final to Stosur in straight sets, had yet another meltdown and screamfest, arguing with the umpire and cussing her out after a point penalty, and then blamed her behavior on wanting too badly to win the USA Open in front of the USA fans on 9/11 anniversary.

Any truth to the rumor that Miss Prissy Pants is campaigning to get an asterisk put next to Novaxx's wins and the entire US championships this year in the official records? MJ Fraunandez has been ordered to keep reminding viewers that the Slams this year were not true majors due to Fedal being injured or pulling out and Murray having his period and melting down on the court.

2. Novaxx. He's an asshole but it's at least out in the open and he gets deservedly criticized for it. Plus I give him credit for clawing his way to the top in spite of the media and the establishment trying to protect Roger by bringing down Rafa and Novaxx in any way they could.
3. Fed. Used to like his game and the fact that he played every tournament seriously unlike his predecessor Sampy who used to tank blatantly at the tour events. But I got increasingly pissed off by all the worship engineered by the Fed PR machinery and I can't stand this prissy bitch anymore. I like him more than I do that cunt Misery though.

Coco winning the doubles would be the perfect end to the American Open honoring the 20th anniversary of 9/11. Americans need to win their tournament, not some fucking Canucks or Serbs.

The Gauffina will save the US Open for the Americans.

The injuries of Federer and Nadal only reduce the number of candidates to GS, from 3 to only one. Men tennnis is extremely boring right now, they need new champions asap but this generation is too used to lose against Nole.
I only hope at least Medvedev do better than in the Australian Open
by Anonymous | reply 261 | September 11, 2021 10:31 AM |
I think Medvedev is going to win the final. He has sailed through without breaking a sweat and will be fresher. Besides Novaxx's comments about treating the final like it is the last match of his life tell me he's going to be under unbelievable pressure and will crack.
It's the year of the rat-faced fug winners: Fernandez and Medvedev.

I hope last night's loss spell the end for Zvereva and he never recovers from yet another flop at the majors, sending him on a downward spiral right out of the top 50.

Sabalenka certainly is a handsome woman.
by Anonymous | reply 267 | September 11, 2021 11:37 AM |
R266, neither team. This is a meaningless tune-up tournament anyway after Serena withdrew and Coco GOAT lost. They should reduce the prize money today to $10,000 and change the tournament name in the records to the WTA Challenger of Flushing.
by Anonymous | reply 268 | September 11, 2021 11:40 AM |
I hope Nole wins the final. He really deserves it. The Olympics fail would have mentally destroyed everybody, but not him. His toughness is just unbelievable, out of this world. I want him to make history and imagine Prissy Queen and his fans having a meltdown and burn in the hell of envy.

Listen, LaLah, Po, or whatever your name is, sit your fugly Teletubby ass down, bitch. You got lucky and ran into a bunch of chokers who keep gifting you wins. I EARNED my GOAT status, you maple syrup slurping ho. I am surprised you are getting a big head. It can finally match your humongous forehead and prevent you from falling over due to your saggy tits.
If you'll excuse me I need to call the INS. Too many illegals crossing the border from Canada and polluting my country. Oh, was I looking at you when I said that? I didn't mean anything by that, Tinky Winky. Your head is so big it was hard to look anywhere else. Don't you have some ice hockey to play and break your leg on or something? Don't let me keep you.
As for that Brit, girl, just choke on your cucumber sandwich and your spotted dick. You may be a big deal in your tiny little island but no one gives a fuck about you in the USA, mmmkay? Fuck off, Jane Austen.
Now I have some practice to go to before my Grand Slam final. I'll do it after I call the INS and get these illegal bitches deported to North Detroit.

Emma Raducanu's US Open final will be shown live on FREE-TO-AIR TV tonight after Amazon Prime agreed to share coverage in a last-minute deal with Channel 4 so more fans can watch live
The broadcasters held talks through the night over a sub-licensing deal that would enable the match to shown live on Prime and on Channel 4 at 9pm this evening.
Amazon has said it will reinvest all of the fees from the deal into British women's tennis to support the next generation of female talent.
The broadcaster has declined to comment on the amount Channel 4 are paying for the licence to screen the match, but Sportsmail understands it is more than £1million.
Amazon have already agreed a highlights deal with BBC Sport for a programme that will air on Sunday afternoon and Channel 4 have swooped in to secure the live rights in a major boost for tennis fans in the UK.
'Emma's journey from qualification through to the US Open final at the age of 18 is a truly magical story for British sport and we think it's important that we extend our coverage to as many people as possible to support her in this historic moment for women's tennis,' said Alex Green, MD Prime Video Sport Europe.
'Young tennis talent such as Emma need the right support to become the stars we see today and we're delighted to be able to commit even more investment to the next generation of women's tennis in the UK.'
The broadcaster has already funded Raducanu's amazing journey, contributing £60,000 towards her development through the Prime Video Future Talent Award in 2019.
Channel 4's Chief Content Officer Ian Katz said: 'Emma's meteoric rise to secure a place in the US Open Final is just sensational.

Will Channel 4 demand a refund when Emma loses the final? The pressure on this kid at next year's Wimbledon is going to be enormous. I predict a first round loss for her.
My prediction: Fernandez bt Raducanu 7/6, 6/3

R295, some Romanians may have Gypsy heritage, which can be traced to Northern India. I don't know if Raducanu's dad has any of that ancestry but some Romanians are quite tanned and dark compared to their neighbors.

R295, r303, I was actually thinking that her dad is probably of Romany (gypsy) origin as he's so dark, much darker than the non-Romany Romanians I know.

R295 Are you serious or just trolling? "The famous Sub Saharians of Romania". LMAO
Btw can't stand Country Soup. Her game is very standard aggressive, like a lesser Li Na with a good directioning like Bouchard. Fernandez has less power but more placement and a style that's kind of recognizable. Also Country Soup looks are weird, can't understand her appeal.
by Anonymous | reply 305 | September 11, 2021 7:16 PM |
Agreed, R294, now we've got the most unlikable top 4 ever. At least in the days of Connors, Nastase and McEnroe we had Ashe, Laver, Borg, Vilas, Gerulaitis and Wilander as the good guys. Now it's a megalomaniac, a racist jerk, a prima donna bathroom cheat, and a sadistic raging sociopath. Can't wait to see FAA, Sinner, Alcaraz and Ruud/Musetti/Korda/Brooksby overtake them.

the weird thing about Osaka struggling this year against smaller lefties Fernandez, Teichmann and Vondrousova is that she defeated Kvitova for the 2019 AO. Kvitova has a good serve and way more power than the ones who beat her this year. Very odd

"Best women's US Open in years! Time for changing of the old guard. "
The old guard was Serena and it already changed.
But I guess Serena being around makes it seem like other players aren't old guard because they don't go back as far - but at this point players younger than Serena - Like Kerber, Muguruza, Halep, Azarenka -- all multiple Slam champs -- are also old(ish) guard. Someone like Barty would be mid-guard if there is such a thing.

Fernandez really annoying here. I get it, it's frustrating that there was an MTO on break point when she had the momentum. But I think per the rules, there HAD to be an MTO if there's blood. I guess Radacanu could have hid it, but it was pretty obvious.

Doubles titles - meh. Even when there isn't a countryman who won singles hogging the spotlight, doubles get little attention. Jamie Murray got more attention because he's Andy Murray's brother.

R431 I think it's an important thing to point out because it can be misleading. When you are hyped for winning a slam but in practice it was the draw of a 250 it can be rough after, because the pressure is huge but the feat wasn't there to begin with.

Possibly, R423. All the draws are on Wiki and you can look at rankings archives to figure out opponents' rank at the time, plus the seed info is all on Wiki.
Look into it.

by Anonymous | reply 440 | September 11, 2021 10:34 PM |
Agreed. If these two charismatic and articulated players are the faces of the future, the WTA has many great, and yes, compelling, years ahead of itself.

LOL Leylah holding that forced smile. Must suck to beat all of those seeds and then lose to a qualifier.

R442 I bet she's gonna rage as soon as she gets off the court.
by Anonymous | reply 443 | September 11, 2021 10:36 PM |
Did Jamie Murray ever win two titles in two days? I think not. Obviously, the main attention is always on singles, but in the UK Salisbury would certainly be getting significant attention any other year, as opposed to practically nothing. It's all been great for British women's tennis, given the drought since Sue Barker's heyday.
by Anonymous | reply 444 | September 11, 2021 10:37 PM |
Well this qualifier held it together better mentally then any of those seeds she beat.
by Anonymous | reply 445 | September 11, 2021 10:40 PM |
Emma was the favorite going into this though, which surprised me given how many top opponents Leylah beat, but Emma's serve is better which made the difference. Emma STILL has not played a single top 10 player though. I'd like to see her against Osaka/Barty/Sabalenka and others. She's still untested to my thinking.
by Anonymous | reply 446 | September 11, 2021 10:40 PM |
"[R431] I think it's an important thing to point out because it can be misleading. When you are hyped for winning a slam but in practice it was the draw of a 250 it can be rough after, because the pressure is huge but the feat wasn't there to begin with. "
Oh, please, you're just shitting on the victory. Winning a Slam via an opened up draw isn't exactly rare. She knows she didn't play top seeds. It's gonna be "rough after" no matter who she beat because now Radacanu - and Fernandez - are known entities, and there will be expectations and pressures. I don't foresee either one dominating despite what they did at the USO. They'll have future successes no doubt, but I don't think the WTA will be the Fernandez-Radacanu show. Like Barty after she won her first Slam, they'll have good Slams and bad Slams.

Emma could be a fashion model - statuesque and posseses exotic looks. I read that even before this final , she is already set to become the best-paid sportswoman in UK and now maybe in the world. Very interesting to know how she will handle this overnight fame. I don't know about Layla - seems talented and feisty in beating all those seeds but kinda run of of gas towards the end. Overcoming her tough draw, she probably felt it's her destiny to win. Looking forward to their next major now that both have targets on their back.

Her mom took her to ballet and tap dance lessons, her dad took her to motorcross, swimming, skiing, karting, tennis. He's the one who pushes her and is very hard to please.
"The youngster was raised on the outskirts of London by her Chinese mother Renee and Romanian father Ian, who both work in finance.
Raducanu added: "I think the confidence comes from just inner belief. My mum comes from a Chinese background, they have very good self-belief.
"It’s not necessarily about telling everyone how good you are, but it’s about believing it within yourself. I really respect that about the culture.
"He [my dad] is all about being different and not caring what other people may have thought at the time."
Raducanu also admitted her parents are the people she wants to impress the most, not tennis legends of yesteryear.
She explained: "They’re very tough to please and have high expectations, so that's a big driving factor as to why I want to perform.
"And I think that’s a result of many years of them just being super-focused, and not getting too high, but at the same time, not getting too low when the losses come.
"[After the Wimbledon defeat] they said, 'I’m proud of you.' That was all I needed."

Emma Raducanu has won the US Open. Things she hasn't done as a professional:
- Won a WTA tour match
- Played a tour level three set match(!!)
- Played on clay
- Directly entered a slam main draw
- Played five tour level events
One of the craziest breakout runs ever.

Raducanu went to traditional high school, completing her coursework this year.
She never enrolled in a full-time tennis academy. Still won a Slam.
More than her shots, I hope that's what coaches/parents seek to replicate

so what do you think? were those 2 better than coco?!
by Anonymous | reply 472 | September 12, 2021 4:05 AM |
R472 it's not fair to compare yet. Fernandez just turned 19 and Raducanu turns 19 in 2 months. We'll have to wait to see what Gauff has done after the 2023 AO as she'll turn 19 spring 2023. Neither Fernandez nor Raducanu had achieved what Gauff has at the age of 17 and obviously we don't know yet if Gauff will be winning single slams or reaching slam finals. She has had a number of wins over top players, won 2 singles titles on 2 different surfaces and is doing great in doubles.
by Anonymous | reply 473 | September 12, 2021 4:17 AM |
Coco is still ranked higher, but they're definitely better - and not just because one won a Slam and the other was a runner up as where Coco's deepest run is the QFs. Coco is good player and she has the competitive fire and drive to stay good - being top 20 or 30 in the world is VERY good. But, not sure yet if she can make that "level jump" into consistent Slam contender. Her physical game isn't as solid as Radacanu's, though she seems to be trusting her slightly janky forehand more. We'll see what happens with CoCo. I bet she's fired up by the performance of Fernandez and Radacanu.
Fernandez played superbly the whole US Open but you can see where her game could go off the rails and she could be upset (or simply beat if playing someone ranked higher). That serve isn't gonna do her any favors.
Been watching tennis for 30+ years. The energy and play from runs like these usually don't last - consistently - unless you're a GOAT level player like Graf. They're not gonna play this well all the time. Will be really interesting to see where their average level is at and what they do next year in all the Slams. Both will also have to deal with being known entities and the pressure of expectations - at the USO there really were none. Now fans and journalists will start talking about results as disappointing or abnormal and the whole context is different.
But, back to the original question - they're better than Gauff right now. They happen to all be ranked in the 20s after this USO.

Fernandez's hissy fit during the MTO and her bitching about it even after the match was over confirmed to me what a snotty, entitled cunt she is. After beating the top players to reach the final she probably assumed she was going to win the title and when things didn't go her way she threw a tantrum like the Karen she revealed herself to be.
And mentioning the 9/11 attacks in her speech was so cringeworthy, calculated and manipulative as a blatant attempt to not get criticized for her behavior. Again completely Karen.

I was open mouthed when she compared herself to New Yorkers and Americans post 9/11. It's truly outstanding that she can be so calculated after an exhausting tennis match. Drop Dead Gorgeous/Mean Girls levels of manipulation.

Absolutely Emm-ense! Totally Rad Queen of New York
And even Her Majesty The Queen has sent a message of congratulations to Emma.
by Anonymous | reply 496 | September 12, 2021 8:19 AM |
R491 Yes it was definitely an attempt to get the crowd back on her side. The fact she basically snatched the microphone back to add that comment showed it wasn't pre-planned in advance. It also meant that, had Emma been planning on saying anything about 9/11 she basically couldn't because then it would look like she was copying Leylah.
That said, I doubt Emma had planned to say anything about 9/11 because it's separate to tennis.
by Anonymous | reply 497 | September 12, 2021 8:22 AM |
She didn’t compare herself to New Yorkers. She was paying respect to the crowd and the date. She simply stated she hoped to be as strong as the citizens of NY. I could see how some could be jaded and think it was calculating. Keep in mind that she is nineteen and not as cynical. The crowd in NY loved her(I was there and fell in love with her play). I think it was a sweet way of her acknowledging the crowd that had been rooting her on so feverishly. And the crowd loved it
by Anonymous | reply 498 | September 12, 2021 8:24 AM |
R498 Yeah we know the crowd loved her. It was disappointing to see them giving a muted response to Emma's brilliant play, while whooping and hollering at every winning shot Leylah made.
Tennis isn't normally like that, unless of course one of the players is on home turf, which wasn't the case here.
by Anonymous | reply 499 | September 12, 2021 8:28 AM |

Will this final and Emma's Slam fuel Coco GOAT's competitive fires and make her want to be #1 even more than she does already? Will she spend every day at the gym and show up at the 2022 Oz Open looking ripped like Serena at her peak? Will Mary Joe keep her sanity if Coco doesn't win a major next year?
by Anonymous | reply 502 | September 12, 2021 8:55 AM |
I think CoCo should play the double match with the other CoCo
by Anonymous | reply 503 | September 12, 2021 9:06 AM |
R503, CoCo is so great that she doesn't NEED a doubles partner. She is good enough to beat the opposing pair all by herself, but it's the stupid rulebook that insists she have a partner on her side of the court.
It's the same with Roger. He is an icon and the GOAT but he is also so great that he doesn't need any opponents to prove his greatness. In fact if he didn't have any opponents on the other side of the court he would have won 60 slams by now, that's how much of a legend he is.

"Sabalenka reminds me of Petrova but with more power, a bigger grunt and Petrova was a bit better at net though Sabalenka has done well in doubles too. They have similar builds."
But, Petrova completely believes in her first-strike power tennis. If you play like that you have to accept missing, sometimes a lot, and you can just be off the rails and lose. Sabalenka doesn't have that same belief. She gets much more emotional when she starts missing, especially in tight situations, on big points. Plus, she gets more tense and unintentionally starts guiding the ball more, decelerating a bit, while in her head still trying to hit hard, which always leads to poor shots.
