The Gays and Tennis: Part 97 second week of the USO cont.
last thread paywalled in record time
the women's draw is completely open and we are guaranteed a new USO winner. Krejcikova is the only slam winner to reach the QF
on the men's side of course it's all about Djokovic and whether he can achieve the calendar slam. His 2 biggest obstacles Zverev and Medvedev are still in.
The next biggest story is the young guns and how far they will advance

Svitolina would do well to hit some high loopy balls because Fernandez is so short. When you're playing a decent short player, hitting the ball low usually won't bother them. Conversely if you're playing someone quite tall, loopy balls often won't get the job done and it's better to hit low as possible

I don't think the Canadian has been much of a brat this match.

I’d like to reach into the television and slap this little Fernandez repeatedly across the face. Every time she pumps her fist or tries to lamely get the crowd to cheer for her — WHACK.

It's amazing to me that she can hit huge shot after huge shot while basically crouching so low that she is almost sitting on the court at the baseline.

Svitolina has an insanely low court IQ for a top player with that many big titles. She just hits everything down the middle, mid-pace, and screams.
Funniest part of the match was Pam Shriver saying "Svitolina is grunting louder now... speaking of which, Sabalenka is playing later on this evening."

Despite the difference in ethnicity, Leyla's features remind me of Medvedev. The hairline and the somewhat planar yet sharp features. Anyway, I like her, she's putting in so much effort and living the dream. Even if this is a once-in-a-lifetime run, it's still pretty magical for her. I certainly didn't expect this of her.

Actually, according to live tennis, FAA is 11 with 3368 points, right behind Casper Ruud at 10 with 3368 and in front of Shapo at 12 with 3310. If FAA somehow wins his semi he'll jump to 9 with 3848 ahead of the absurdly still somehow top 10 ranked Federer despite playing only 3 French open matches in a year.

Puhleeze Margaret. Yeah you won 25 majors but we all know that at least 22 of those wins were jokes with only you, a handful of women from the top 200 and mostly unknowns in the field. Billy Gene (dead name: Billie Jean) told us the stories about your Oz Opens where you would be sent straight to the finals on the first day and the club would then beg random women on the streets to pick up a racket and be your opponents. Winner's prize money: a breakfast at the local church with a $5 voucher for cleaning supplies.
You sound hoarse and faint, Margaret. Are you struggling to breathe again? I thought you had stopped playing those sex games where you ended up under Wendy TurnBULL and Spam Shriver.

The AELTCC is willing to uphold and protect Sir Roger Federer GOAT status and let him keep half of his 2019 Wimbledon for as long as He pleases. The AELTCC is also amenable to yanking peasants Djokovic and Nadal off of their Wimbledon titles at any time as judged appropriate by Him.

Medvedev showed some weaknesses in his match, still the favourite but Felix can win if he plays well.

I think Alcaraz will be number one at the nex gen finals because Felix and Sinner will get into the nitto finals.
Of course Sinner could play if he doesn't qualify for nitto finals, he has zero motivation because he was the last winner (nothing to win a lot to lose) but he is italian and he probably will want to play at home.
This is the first year there won't be an italian wc because they have two players who are going to qualify directly.
I was expecting Benic to win easily. Maybe Raducanu is the real deal after all. She was way outside top 100 before this tournament

not sure why anyone is insulting Gauff. She's only 17 while Raducanu and Fernandez are a little older. Gauff already has 2 singles titles and some doubles titles. Gauff has defeated top players such as Osaka, Sabalenka, Jabeur, Mertens and of course the legendary but fallen Venus.
Fernandez and Raducanu are playing amazing tennis now but they weren't doing what Gauff has done when they were 17. All 3 have very bright futures.

Bencic was horrendous. She had 30-0 in so many of Emma's service games and hit four errors in a row. I was impressed with the young Brit though. No 'standout' element in her game but she is very solid. Hasn't necessarily faced elite opposition so far though (or at least, anyone playing like elite opposition lol). Her run is really Barty's fault for f_cking up against Rogers.
Interesting that she's already got a spread in British Vogue and major endorsement deals. Mary-Jo in ruins!! These Anna Kournikova types get criticised a lot but can be good for promoting the sport.

Jesus Christ! Do people even watch the match?
1. Here is what happened sequentially
1.At 6/5 game change over Alex asked the umpire to turn off the stadium big screen since it was causing distraction. Players asked this all the time..She called and it was turned off.
2 In the beginning of the tiebreaker it again turned on.. Alex again asked. She called, it got turned of.
3 At 5-5 tiebreaker it again got turned on probably during the rally
4 That is why umpire called at 6 5 to turn it off

She specifically said she wanted an Aromanian guy, so the dating pool of Aromanian men who are successful and rich would have been very small (i'm sure someone as wealthy as her was not going to marry a humble 9-5 guy). But yeah, I see this going badly too.
As for Dokic, i'm just glad she's doing okay at all after the hell she had to endure during her childhood and adolescence. Overweight or otherwise. I love Berrettini. He's handsome and seems like a really nice guy. But his forehand - big as it may be - is unreliable. His backhand up against Djokovic's is like bringing a knife to a gun fight. Those chicken legs get very tired after these elite-level long rallies. And if his first serve percentage isn't extremely high, he has no chance.
Djokovic has looked very beatable this USO. Maybe Zverev or Medvedev can finish him off but I just don't think Matteo is ever going to be that guy unfortunately. At least in a GS. Prove me wrong though? Please?

Berrettini should really spend his off-season with the best backhand specialist/coach and try to do something to improve his great flaw. With his serve and forehand it's a pity he can't at least have a solid backhand. He also should work on coming in more to avoid longer rallies

Sabalenka and Sakkari should be the clear favorites. I'm surprised neither have won a major yet. The teen-agers are the underdogs and either winning the title will probably be the better ending for this open.

Why does Djokovic keep losing the first set? His opponents know this stat.
95,6 Djokovic's win-percentage after taking the first set is 95,6. He is at no. 1 spot, ahead of Bjorn Borg, whose 95.5 percent came from a win-loss record of 526-25.

"there is no pressure on the teenagers at all."
Yeah, I get that theory and know why people say it, but I rarely agree with it. It's an amazing opportunity - historically inconsistent Sakkari who is just a 17 seed and Sabalenka, both of whom, just like the teenagers, have never won a major. The teenagers may never have a better opportunity.
People commonly say there's "no pressure" if on paper the player isn't supposed to win - based on seeding, etc. But if players buy into that they'll never progress into champions. They can always be content with the result that was "supposed" to happen and be happy with their run to whatever round.
"No pressure" is supposed to enable the player to play more freely - swing for the fences and not be subject to wobbles caused by mental tightness and pressure. But, just as often, it leads to not putting up a full fight if they get behind and a loss looks like it may happen. There's just an underlying dynamic of "this was all bonus anyway."
Anyway, I think that Radacanu and Fernandez will feel pressure and if not, it won't be the good type of "no pressure." Pressure is good. And even if they were to start out playing freely because of no pressure, that will change if they got ahead in the match, because then they would have the immense pressure of closing the match to make a Slam final and not blow their lead.

I'm rooting for Muscles Maria, and the Sabalenka Surround Sound Experience.
Emma hasn't beaten many quality players in her run (Bencic is highly ranked but played like shit, same with Rogers etc), whereas Sakkari has knocked out three top ten seeds in a row (Kvitova, Andreescu, Pliskova) and was in amazing form last night. She had two MPs for a French Open final, I don't think she is going to let this chance slip her by again.
The other one is harder to pick. I want Sabalenka just because she supports the tour so much and I do like a big ballbasher. Her goofy She-Hulk energy always gives me a few giggles on the couch. But she can be prone to messy, double fault-ridden performances and Leylah is playing fearlessly. I am guessing Sabalenka overpowers her too much, especially attacking those Fernandez serves.

I don't have any proof, but I absolutely believe Med is on something. I've been following him since 2017, when he was a normal player. Then at Sofia 2019 he suddenly had no need for recovery, both physical or for breathing, had a new weird way to breath, and was running fast and after every single ball. After that final against Muscle God Fucsovics his career took off and he started to win everything. Very sus.
Another Russian who is clearly taking stuff is Karatsev. A total failure of a player for his entire life, orbitating around infimous levels of 400 or 600 in the world, at 27 he suddenly became a Top 20 player, slam semifinalist, 500 tier winner and won over Djokovic. Fucking bullshit. If you think that Kuznetsova and Sharapova were found to be on doping and that Safina was questioned by authorities in Spain... I see how Bouchard was furious and I respect her even more. Russians are scam.

r308, that's exactly how I feel about Novak. He suddenly was incredible after previously have to retire on all his matches. If he could pull it together you doubt Medvedev because he is Russian?
The country does promote it and sees no problem with it but Tennis is tighter with testing. He would not get away with it.
I think Nole is blood doping. His recovery is more than no gluten. He is doing something to improve his recovery time.

I never found Sharapova's doping as such a big deal. What she was busted for was a legal substance for the majority of her career. Granted, taking it after it had become a banned substance wasn't a good move, but she took her punishment and was off tour for a long time. None of her Slams were won when it was a banned substance.
As the above poster(s) point out - doping in tennis is all about endurance and recovery -- not things like muscle mass, which really doesn't help in tennis after a certain point.

R310 I see your point but my point is: legal or not legal, did that substance help her/had any boosting effect etc? Yes. In fact after she came back she wasn't able to repeat a single success other than a fourth round in a slam and a 250 tier tournament. Same for Errani, once without tortellini she sinked into oblivion.
Regarding what R309 said about Novak. It's the same here. Novak does (or did) the Hyperbaric chamber, which oxigenate the tissues and has a similar effect fo Meldonium, yet is legal. But the result is still there. All these athletes live in a grey area of doing something without getting caught. What drives me crazy is that there are clean guys/girls like Bouchard who get the shortest stick.

R312, I don't completely disagree, but hasn't there always been things athletes take - legally - that "help and boost?" Even something as basic as glutamine. Everything that helps athletes isn't banned. If you find something that helps and it isn't banned, why not take it? As annoying as Maria was ( I wasn't a fan), I don't agree with erasing her legacy after the fact for a substance that wasn't banned at the time she achieved nearly everything that her legacy is based on. When she came back she was aging out anyway. I'm not disputing that the lack of melodium or whatever it was didn't play a role, but she was on the decline regardless - especially after not playing tour matches for so long.

R299 Sabalenka is number 2, but Sakkari never was even close to being top 10. She had multiple opportunities of doing great (last in RG) but she has a tendency to choke (she was amazing against Swiatek at RG but only because the polish had a bad day if it was a close match the greek always find a way to lose).
I think Sabalenka is the clear favourite if she uses her brain. She has power to submit Leylah and the canadian must be exhausted after so many tough matches. If Aryna is patient she'll win.
I think Raducanu has more chances, specially if she starts playing well and puts presure on Sakkari

R308 Karatsev always played that way, he hit the ball hard and did well last year on challengers. So he had a mix of extraconfidence and no pressure when he played at the Australian open. The result, he made winners left and right.
Now he is a top 25 player, so he has pressure and he is unable to keep the level

I believe there was some story in Karatsev possibly being a match fixer when he was on the challenger tour. The posters on Mens Tennis Forum did a lot of research. Doping as well? Perhaps, and i'd be disappointed. But I don't think any drug enhances the way he timed the ball during the AO, Dubai, and that win over Novak.
Defending the Sharapova case is plainly ridiculous. Just because it was 'legal' doesn't mean it wasn't morally reprehensible and still cheating with an unfair advantage. She had the greatest 3 set comeback record of all time before the ban, and after it one of the worst. How does a lanky, 12 foot tall player who was never the best mover have endless reserves of energy? She got a Russian doctor to prescribe a drug that was only legally sold in Latvia, despite living in the states? Only meant to be taken in short doses with a major heart condition? The doctor told her to take an extra high dosage in "matches of great importance"? The funniest part was her declaring her Vitamin C and B supplements on her forms for 10 years, but never this highly secretive drug she had an entire operation to get. 'Forgot to read my emails' my ass.
I'm suss on Serena, Medvedev, the big 3, and many of the rest of them too. Henin's case seems pretty obvious to me and I think it has been discussed on here before. Tennis just doesn't seem like a clean sport whatsoever.

R312, Sharapova was out for over a year, she was 30 when she came back, she had some injuries, she won enough to get back into the top 25. She had a long enough career at a very high level, she probably wasn't so motivated anymore. Don't forget that her heyday had been in the early-mid 2000s, there's no reason to expect her to be playing consistently at the same level over 10 years later.
She did in fact get through to the 2018 French Open quarter final. I seriously doubt that a substance that had been considered perfectly ok for several decades is one that can enhance performance so much that it can push a mediocre player into grand slam finals
by Anonymous | reply 338 | September 9, 2021 6:57 PM

R338, that’s not how PEDs work. If you are mediocre to begin with, they can’t make you great. They cannot change your mentality. What they can do is give a very good player or great player an extra edge—not a gigantic one, but in a game of close margins, it’s something that can make a difference.
by Anonymous | reply 339 | September 9, 2021 7:21 PM

R339 Exactly. Probably without that extra help she would have lost the Roland Garros final against Halep and the Rome final against Suarez Navarro. Two close matches that came to mind right now.

doping is in every sport. Just look at soccer, you have players who are in their 40s still performing at high levels, granted they have great diets and fitness, they are definitely taking PEDs to help them
by Anonymous | reply 341 | September 9, 2021 7:35 PM

Why would any female player need PEDs to win a slam these days? When was the last time you saw some epic match where both players played at such a sustained high level for 3 hours and which tested limits of mental and physical stamina? Take some time and watch that Seles v Capriati semi from 30 years ago - compared to what we have seen in the past 5-6 years, it seems like a superhuman level of tennis, physically and mentally.
by Anonymous | reply 342 | September 9, 2021 7:38 PM

R339, according to r312, Sharapova was getting into the later rounds of grand slams and winning slams and titles when she was taking meldonium but could only manage the 4th or 3rd round and was unable to win titles without it. Sounds like r312 was suggesting it gave Sharapova more than just an edge.

R343 Clearly when she came back she was older and with more injuries and back in the 2000s she was younger and fitter (shoulder surgery aside, but she recovered very well). It's difficult to talk about "what if", but probably Sharapova without Meldonium would have reached maybe just a semi instead of a championship, or a quarterfinal instead of a final, and maybe she would have got 2 or 3 slams instead of 5. Generally a somewhat lesser career.

Good break for Sabalenka to start the 2nd set off. That could be key since Fernandez will likely only be able to break Sabalenka's serve if she makes a bunch of errors like last time.

Sabalenka knew when Pliskova lost last night that she was now the most accomplished player left in the women's draw. Sakkari only has 1 small title and a RG SF. Fernandez has 1 small title and is just starting her career. Raducanu was unheard of until Wimbledon. Sabalenka has been talked about for several years now and is feeling all the pressure. She knows this is her slam to lose and she's having trouble keeping composure

R422, post-Serena there won't be dominant players like we've seen in the past. There's just so much depth and no one really stands out. Osaka may have but she's hit a roadblock. There will be more Slam winners, more finalists - and and more of those players will sort of ebb and flow - contending sometimes, but not at other times. This isn't to say someone won't emerge and win, say, 5 Slams. But, there isn't going to be a Serena, Graf, Navratilova, Evert, or even a Seles (who won 9) or Venus or Henin (who won 7).

by Anonymous | reply 429 | September 10, 2021 12:45 AM

"She knows this is her slam to lose and she's having trouble keeping composure"
She should try to convince herself otherwise. I mean, she's never won or even made a final, just like her opponent. I know it's not that easy, but she could mentally turn it on its head. It's really not hers to lose since she's never shown that she can win a Slam - and she's had way more opportunities and been a contender much longer.

Win or lose, Sabalenka will have several more years to get a slam. The ones who are in real danger of never getting a slam now are Pliskova and Svitolina. I think they'll stay competitive with other top players for 2 more years max. They've both been around for close to 10 years now

REALLY? all 4 should be beyond embarrassed to lose to a 18 year old 80th ranked player with little experience and really no weapons to speak of! ALL 4 of these players should win against fernandez regularly in straight sets....
by Anonymous | reply 491 | September 10, 2021 1:46 AM

She moved to the UK when she was 2 years old and grew up there. She plays for England. Fuck Canada!

I love that Fernandez and Raducanu played each other a few years ago in the juniors

Is she a Canadian citizen? She was born there but left at age 2. It's crazy people are saying shes not really british cause she was born in Canada. I'm sure she remembers so much of her time there lol

Andreescu winning the US Open in her tournament debut in a year of her tour debut felt unprecedented...not too mention the slam victories of Ostapenko, Kenin, Krejcikova, Swiatek, et al., but what's happening here truly takes the cake.

R554 it doesnt really matter now but who won?

it's over for Sakkari. I think she's still very tired from the last match.

Does Virginia Wade love the ladies?

Sakkari needs to be over the "It's my tournament to lose" tension (based on seeding/experience) and realize that it's now Radacanu's match to lose. Just loosen up and play like she can.

It's the same as the last match. These teens are solid but Sabalenka and now Sakkari are making too many mistakes at the worst times.

Both Fernandez and Raducanu are much better than their ranking would lead you to believe but the fact that we are likely to see No. 70 (or so) and No. 150 in the world play in a slam final says something about the state of the WTA Tour.

They’re making these ladies play late as HELL. Doesn’t seem fair at all.

R563 or they are just coming upon their true ability and having a breakthrough moment at one of the biggest events. These girls are technically awesome and fighters.

So who do you think will win Emma or the annoying brat?

R557 I don't know what round it was or the year but Raducanu defeated Fernandez at junior Wimbledon a few years ago

Raducanu is so gorgeous. Beautiful game.

Emma is pretty much a complete package, she is book smart, good at tennis, not ugly, mixed race, nice personality.

Raducanu's backhand is so nice to watch.

I'm not disputing that, R565, but I've been following tennis for 30+ years and there were always young players having their breakthrough slams but there had always been some buzz, some expectation that they were about to have that big breakthrough moment based on their undeniable talent, had some trajectory toward the top of the game. Has there been any buzz about these two girls as the next big things in women's tennis? That's the thing about the WTA in the past 4-5 years - it's completely random and, except for Osaka, and to a much lesser degree Barty, most of these newcomers felt like flashes in the pan when it comes to the success in the slams.

R567, it was the round of 32, and it was 2018. Fernandez was seeded 11 and Raducanu was unseeded.

Raducanu has faced easier opponents than Fernandez but Raducanu's dominance in barely being challenged is equally as impressive as Fernandez scraping out tough wins over a murderer's row of a draw. Unless Raducanu suddenly starts choking, after tonight she'll have won 9 matches at the same tournament without dropping a set. Her toughest score so far is Q2 against Bolkvadze 6-3 7-5 lol Her toughest main draw match so far is Bencic 6-3 6-4
