I always heard that you should never pluck eyebrows. Something about risking a brain hemorrhage. Oh, wait, I think that advice may have been never to pluck nose hairs, but to trim them instead.

Waiting for the official letter of offering they said they'd email today and what will be, will be.
Ironing shirts, working sets of bicep curls, press-ups, and chest flys into the mix and dusting my blinds.

[quote]Here at DMV. Waiting. Nobody is cute. Usually you can count on some diverting scenery.
I had to go to the D.C. DMV inspection station last week because my sticker was about to expire. Going to a private service station isn't an option here, and there's only one inspection joint for the entire District. I was expecting to wait forever in a long line of vehicles. But when I arrived, there was no line, and I left with my new sticker 10 minutes later. I think they only thing they did was an emissions test. I'm guessing procedures have been scaled back because of Covid. The most underwhelming (in a good way) inspection I've ever had.

I'm a nervous driver, so was more overwhelmed by the route there than I was at the visit.

I tried the new apple crisp macchiato (iced of course, it's 100 degrees here) from Starbucks and it's way better than any of their pumpkin drinks.

[quote] The nice girl who cuts my hair, also trims my nose, ear & eyebrow hairs.
I prefer my own nose/ear hair trimmers but mine is out of service and they're hard to find right now. I also prefer the kind with the "teeth" at the end vs. the round trimming implement, which seems to be more effective.
Eyebrows, I do leave to the stylist/barber.

I'm not going to clean the upstairs bathroom after all.

My nose hair and ear hair grow at the same rate as my facial hair. I now trim hair that has decided to grow on the outside of my ears. By 60, I expect I'll look like a terrier with mange and boogery rust spots beneath my eyes.

Going to run to the food court today. They have a special cook that makes a mean stuffed cabbage on Sunday. After that, I will buy some peach bellinis and ingredients for this week's meals.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | August 29, 2021 11:47 AM |
Did you mean containers of pre-made bellinis at the liquor store? How convenient!
by Anonymous | reply 46 | August 29, 2021 12:52 PM |
R46 - they import these from Italy out here at a cute little Italian shop in the local mall. I have seen the owner who is a ginger from Turin with a beard perfect for a good fuck...but, unfortunately, married with kids. I kind of hate how addictive they are. They have Hugos as well. Anyway I will probably need them as I have to pick up some adult diapers for women....don't ask. I am now overwhelmed.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | August 29, 2021 1:37 PM |
I ordered Chinese instead of Indian (as planned) yesterday. Mixed egg drop-wonton soup doesn't really work, although I like each individually.
Later, I shall return a recent pricey impulsive wine purchase.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | August 29, 2021 3:12 PM |
In the mood for gin, vermouth, and orange bitters. It's not even hot outside.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | August 29, 2021 4:31 PM |
R45 Peach bellinis sound great. Never had them but love anything with peaches. I'd be overwhelmed to try them.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | August 29, 2021 4:42 PM |
So it’s dark and gray here in NJ and with all the hurricane news, I keep forgetting I’m not waiting for the storm like the last one.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | August 29, 2021 4:46 PM |
R45 - I heard Trader Joe's has a peach bellini mix. Despite my love for Trader Joe's, I didn't really try them. I was really more disciplined and a light drinker at home and pre-pandemic...Corona Light only (I know...but I had a six pack so there's that (gone down the drain)). They are these but apparently the ones in the US are better if you add pureed peaches (but I wouldn't as I also am not that keen on peaches).

TJ’s doesn’t sell alcohol ‘round here.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | August 29, 2021 5:42 PM |
Here, TJ sells beer and wine only. You want hooch, it's off to Total Wine... where the guy who handled my wine return was cute, though sported what appeared to be a wedding ring (dark material not gold/silver). Using the remaining balance on my gift card proved beyond overwhelming, for the staff, myself, and the other customers: many attempts among the register clerk, the manager nearby, and finally, the cute likely-married guy again.

Went to my dentist today to have my stitches removed. I had gum surgery on the 24th. Next week, he'll make a mold for a crown that is missing. Next year, I get my aligners from Smile Direct Club!
When I was young, my dentist (at that time) told me I had plenty of room for my wisdom teeth. Unfortunately, they didn't grow in straight, gave me problems, and I had to have them removed. My front teeth on the top slightly overlap and my bottom teeth aren't straight. By my 60th birthday, they should be much straighter and I'll be less self-conscious about them.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | September 2, 2021 7:09 PM |
Good luck, Cosmo!
by Anonymous | reply 78 | September 2, 2021 7:42 PM |
R77 Cosmo, I wonder if you were at my dentist this morning! I could hear a conversation that sounded much like what you describe. I was there to have a permanent bridge built due to having a broken tooth removed a month ago. It took 3 hours in the chair but the temp is beautiful. I go back in 2 weeks to have the permanent 'installed.' Also, I had the same advice about my wisdom teeth and they did grow in straight and filled in for some back molars. Sorry that didn't work out for you. I think a slight overlap in front can be charming, like a small gap between the front teeth, or a crooked eyetooth.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | September 2, 2021 8:48 PM |
Good luck Cosmo! You're gonna be fine. Hang in there.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | September 2, 2021 11:39 PM |
Thank you, R78, R79, and R80! I am definitely hanging in there.
I had a gym teacher in middle school. She told us girls she had been a Playboy Bunny but had gotten into an accident and had to leave that job. She had to be in her 30s or 40s and had metal braces. Imagine a former PBB, with metal braces, in front of teenagers! I don't recall us being cruel to her, just very curious about getting braces at that age. I'm using her as inspiration, sort of.

I'm thinking of moving the cat's litterbox from the basement to the bathroom. I don't want to contend with the stairs anymore BUT I still have to clean the box and what do I do with the bag of poops? I need to think this through so I'll be resting on the couch for awhile.

R122, I have Cos's litterbox in my bathroom between the shower stall and the toilet. I use doggie pooper scooper bags when I scoop his litter box. You can buy scented ones if you'd like. Amazon sells those as well as bio-degradeable (sp?) bags. I put them in the kitchen garbage can and throw them out with the regular trash. I also buy Earth-friendly bags to dump his litter into when I change it out.
When I brought him home as a kitten, I tried putting his litter box in the guest bathroom but he absolutely refused to use it in there. I guess he was trying to tell me that he is a resident and not a guest.

Regarding bug bites, years ago, late 80s/early 90s, I worked with a guy who, while on vacation in Florida, was bit by a spider. Over the next six months he lost use of the leg where the spider bit him, collapsed at work and then died. ‘ No reason to get whelmed by my post, just don’t fuck around with bug bites.

R308- I binged Wednesday through Saturday. I was good for FIFTY days in a row before this binge. I think my metabolism slowed down a lot that is why I was able (unfortunately) to gain so much weight so quickly. My binges would begin after lunch- A pint of ice cream, two thirds of a container of Trader Joe's Chocolate Chip cookies - made with butter, a large frozen pizza, some Sees jelly beans- these were some of my binge items.

R329 do u like living there?
by Anonymous | reply 330 | September 29, 2021 9:34 PM |
What I like about it is the cost of living is much lower than California, it's quiet, there's abundant wildlife, the stargazing is unmatched, and we feel detached from the rest of the world and all the disasters and conflict we see about and read about. The peace and quiet is a plus.
What I don't like it is the isolation (and before I got married, I lived here alone and it was not fun at all) and the distance from everything including cultural activities, shopping, services, etc. It's not for everyone, especially if you are used to all the conveniences and options of a big city. You give up a lot when you move to a unpopulated area.
Additionally, we live in deep red Trumper country (80% of them voted for Trump in the last election) and I can tell you that Trumpers are just assholes. They pretend to be nice people, but in their actions they are deeply selfish. We rarely associate with any of the other people around here, which only increases the feeling of isolation.

It’s a red tailed hawk sound. Blue jays are smart birds. When I had my guineas I’d go out & feed them when the guinea were in my front yard, making guinea noises. To this day blue jays make a guinea sound so I’ll come out & put the seeds on the ground. It’s eerie when I’m outside & I hear it. I look for my guineas coming through the hedge….then I remember they’re not coming.
(It’s not the “yelling” guinea sound. It’s a soft sound the guineas made all day long, like coo-whistle. I can’t find a recording of it. Only of the yelling)

Meatloaf mix, Beef/Veal/Pork, was on sale so I threw a package in the cart this morning. I can't even remember the last time I made meatloaf, I think Obama was still in office. I used the America's Test Kitchen recipe which calls for saltine crackers as the filler and I just so happened to have some and they weren't even expired. Turned out mighty good and meatloaf sandwiches for the foreseeable future.

I live a block away from a large park that is home to hundreds, maybe thousands, of birds. Twice this morning we were visited by two peafowl, a peacock and peahen, who managed to flap their way up to our second-floor balcony. To see peacock blue in such close quarters was a gift from the gods, and the hen’s tiara was most impressive, like a Spanish flamenco dancer.
They fluttered away, and we continued sipping our coffee.
About twenty minutes later, they returned. It looked as though they might be scouting out a quiet nook far from the madding crowd.
No, we said to each other. We like our balcony and we can’t have a pair of massive birds camping outside our bedroom door. Besides, they make a hell of a racket.
So, out came the broom and shoo! they were gone.
I’ve dubbed them Mr. and Mrs. Peabody.

Nancy Kelly, as the distraught mother of little Rhoda Penmark, is certainly over-the-top, probably because she also played the part on Broadway and wasn't reined in for the movie version. And yet, amid all the high camp, Eileen Heckart, as the mother of the little boy whom Rhoda killed to get the penmanship medal she thought was rightfully hers, is utterly heartbreaking.

Thanks for the info r459.
The pandemic shutdown last year coupled with an annoying experience using CVS Bucks cured me of playing the drugstore rewards game.
I had $5 in CVS Bucks and bought $4.99 package of Bounty paper towels. Snotty little witch at the register was mumbling under her breath about my not buying anything else and getting "free" paper towels. I had words with her and her equally useless "manager" and vowed never to return.
Then the shutdown came and Target was closer to me and no jumping through hoops for rewards and toiletries are cheaper everyday. Plus Target has the frequent buy $20 in toiletries get $5 gc and that's just easier.
I will visit Walgreen's over the holidays as they have the Royal Dansk butter cookies BOGO then and I use those for a shortbread crust I make.

[quote] I am so proud of myself for figuring out just now how to repair and reformat my external hard drive back-up that got fucked up with the last Mac OS update. I like my LaCie "Porsche" external drive. Does its job in the background, updating several times a day. Glad I don't have to buy something new.
R513, how did you reformat your Mac? I paid someone to do it. I'm guessing your external drive is for your Time Machine backups? Love having those. Be careful, though, my external drive crapped out unexpectedly. My computer lady (the one who reformatted my Mac) salvaged what was on it.

Maybe r512 is a very large bird.
by Anonymous | reply 517 | October 14, 2021 5:18 PM |
R516 -- I did not need to reformat my iMac, just repair the LaCie drive so that the automatic daily TimeMachine backups could be stored on it.
I used the Disk Repair Utility app that came with the computer.
I found the instructions for how to do it under "Mac Help" at the top of my screen. Typed in the "How to repair and reformat an external hard drive."
I have the latest a greatest iMac with the new Apple chip. Got it in June.
I thought I was going to be overwhelmed but proud I was just temporarily whelmed.

I put the berries in a small rubbermaid container and I eat only half an apple, half a mango and one or two bananas. I eat breakfast after I've taken a 30 minute walk.

Dinner with my MAGA cousin who I haven’t seen since the 2016 election. I figure we just will avoid politics, but after ten minutes “Can you believe that’s it’s only taken a few months for that moron in the White House to completely destroy this country?” I replied that I hoped we could avoid talking about politics and we mostly did.

The "Donate" box I keep a box in my garage was full so I divided it up into two separate donations to be dropped off yesterday. One for the thrift shop run by a dog rescue for senior dogs and the other for a thrift shop run by the cat protection society.
The dog rescue people greeted me enthusiastically as I walked in the door and thanked me profusely for my donation. I'm a recovering kitchen gadget addict so there was some very nice newer items in the box.
The cat protection lady barely acknowledged me when I walked in She gestured with her head where I should leave the box and then went back to her reading. I exited awkwardly while mumbling something to the effect of "Yeah well then, ok, then, thank you, bye." Why on earth I said "thank you" to her I don't know.
My point being, the dog people acted like dogs and the cat lady acted like a cat.

My last booster was 30 years ago before going to India. They say it lasts as long as 30 years rather than the official number of 10 years, so I'll decide on another booster as I turn 91.

You can reformat a disk using the Disk Utility that comes with every Mac. You can reformat an external drive, or even the internal startup drive, if necessary. Be sure you have a current backup of whatever disk you are reformatting, so you can restore the data

Yes, IMO, they are. Donuts, generally, are made from refined wheat flour (spike in blood sugar). There's granulated sugar in there, esp. with a glazed donut. More spiking in blood sugar. It's fried (adding to the calorie count). Finally, they're low in protein, maybe 2 grams per donut.
That said, I like cake (vs. yeasted) donuts.

I'm soaking Great White Northern Beans overnight to make a Broccoli White Bean soup. It's creamy , yet vegan. The creaminess comes from the beans. I will cook the beans in the morning then add them to the onions, garlic, black pepper , olive oil and broccoli ( which I steam earlier. I let it come to boil then turn off the flame then use the immersion blender to liquify the soup.
