Titans--late to the party

I just started watching the series with Season 1 and I'm a couple of episodes in--I know I'm late to the party with it, but I have some questions.

Is it always so ultraviolent? I understand Raven/Rachel accidentally killing people when she lets her dark side out, but I'm a bit shocked by Robin intentionally putting people's eyes out with his throwing stars, or smashing their heads against walls until they bleed. (He must be killing some of them. That's not what happened in the comics when I used to read them when "The New Teen Titans" came out in the early 1980s, but I realize things may have changed.) Also, in this version, can Gar Logan only turn into a tiger instead of into other animals? And why do Hawk and Dove wear costumes directly based on their Steve Ditko costumes in the comics when almost none of the other characters have dorky costumes? I cannot imagine how the Dove fights crime in that awkward cape with the metal feathers.

I was shocked to see how Sherilyn Fenn had lost all of her looks in the first episode, btw. I'm glad she's still getting work. I really like the actress who plays Starfire/Koriand'r/Kory Anders--she's excellent. And Alan Ritchson is not a great actor (though he'salso not abd), but he is incredibly hot. He's built like a gay porn star for Kristen Bjorn.

Not a thread about the show from the start, though.

by Anonymousreply 2August 18, 2021 8:43 PM

That IS a thread about the show from the start.

It's talking about TNT broadcasting Titans from Season 1 Episode 1.

by Anonymousreply 3August 18, 2021 8:45 PM

Well, be that as it may. Can anyone answer my questions? They're not answered on the other thread.

by Anonymousreply 4August 18, 2021 10:40 PM

Yes, the show is always violent.

No, the comic run wasn't as violent but I do think it got a bit darker after the death of Donna Troy. There was also a change in tone in Young Justice after Donna's death and it got less jokey as the younger heroes realized of the true danger of what they were doing.

[quote] when almost none of the other characters have dorky costumes?

I assume Hawk and Dove wear the original costume as a reference to them being the OG Titans during a more innocent time. Dick shrugged off being Robin so it stands to reason that he would want a more mature costume of his own. The others are just coming into the superhero biz.

Gar can only turn into a tiger for now. He's trying to learn how to do more.

Thanks, r5.

by Anonymousreply 6August 19, 2021 3:59 PM

I finished the first season,. It's much better than I expected, but it seems like bad writing to me that every single one of the heroes except Donna is struggling with fighting a dark side to them (except Kory, who just kills people and Dick says sometimes, "Oh no! Bad!," and at other times says "Torch the Asylum that's filled with people!").

I like the girl who plays Donna, although I know the character dies later. She doesn't look as much like a model as so many of the other characters do (I read most of them WERE models before the show started). Brenton Thwaites and the woman who plays Kory are the best actors on the show by quite a lot.

by Anonymousreply 7August 19, 2021 4:10 PM

I thought they were called Tight Ends?

by Anonymousreply 8August 19, 2021 4:12 PM

R8, that name was taken by the new Tim Tebow reality show.

by Anonymousreply 9August 19, 2021 4:20 PM

I think Donna Troy aka Wonder Girl comes back life this season. She's a great character and the show is better with her working with the Titians

by Anonymousreply 10August 19, 2021 4:22 PM

I just discovered it this year too. I love it. Brenton is so fucking hot!!!!

I was annoyed they killed Donna quickly; we never really got to see her powers. Can she fly? Does her lasso make people tell the truth or just use it as a weapon?

Who was the Amazonian woman whom she talked with? They never explained that.

by Anonymousreply 11August 19, 2021 6:14 PM

In the comics, Donna can also fly just like Wonder Woman, and her magic lasso is made out of thr same gold from Aphrodite's girdle as Wonder Woman's is, and so it also can magically compel people to tell the truth.

They have not explained on the show yet whether Donna could fly or what else the magic lasso can do other than be a weapon. Interestingly they have yet to show if Starfire can fly 9as she can in the comics).

Donna is rumored to come back this season so I'm sure we'll find out more. I'm also pretty sure that Hank survived that explosion--I would bet Krypto somehow saved him at super-speed, since we never saw the body.

by Anonymousreply 12August 24, 2021 5:48 AM

I'm fascinated by the one-legged actress they hired to play Barbara Gordon. She's not a bad actress , but she's so incredibly bitchy as Barbara Gordon.

It's confusing they started this season saying both Jim Gordon (her father) and Alfred are dead, but they didn't explain how they died. I guess they're both dead in the comics, but they've been dead before and have returned, so they will almost certainly return again. I don't think Barbara Gordon is the police commissioner of Gotham City in the comics, though, but it would make sense she would have that job given who her father was and that she's a former congresswoman.

I'm all caught up with the show now, and I've been surprised by how good it's been. I've especially liked that they made Tamaranians black and hired this terrific African-American actress to play Starfire. Alan Ritchson is surprisingly more than just his huge tits as Hank Hall (though the character is so annoying). The woman who plays Dawn/Dive looks like she could do much better in a better role, but hers is almost thankless. I don't like the actress who plays Rachel/Raven and I've been glad she's been absent the third season.

The show is very inconsistent about violence--Dick said in the latest episode none of the Titans had been a killer before Jason Todd became the Red Hood, which makes no sense since we've seen Rachel and Starfire kill multiple people, and Gar killed the doctor torturing him at the Asylum.

I see why Brenton Thwaites has such a devoted following on DL. He's not a thick roided-up slab of meat like Alan Ritchson or the guy who plays Conner Kent, but he's got a great ripped body and he's very sexy. He's also a good actor and can carry most of the heavy lifting the show requires--he and Starfire/Kory are the show's best two actors.

Vincent Kartheiser 's Scarecrow seems too much like his Pete Campbell on "Mad Men," except he's a stoner.

I hope we get to see scenes on Tamaran later in the season.

by Anonymousreply 13August 24, 2021 6:03 AM

Just started watching this myself and am up to season one, episode five. The production design is amazing, I’m assuming it’s filmed in Canada. The amazing spaces of the sets must be by and large be real places as they are used in such a few scenes that I can’t see them being built for such short term use. The balance of humor is excellent as well.

by Anonymousreply 14August 24, 2021 6:57 AM

[quote]It's confusing they started this season saying both Jim Gordon (her father) and Alfred are dead, but they didn't explain how they died. I guess they're both dead in the comics, but they've been dead before and have returned, so they will almost certainly return again.

I'm assuming Alfred died of old age (though I vaguely remember S2 Bruce calling on Alfred to bring he and Dick a drink. It stands out because I thought, "Bruce is a geezer. How old is Alfred?". Barbara explained that Gordon died due to his heart stopping after being frozen by Mr. Freeze.

I know Alfred recently died in the comics. I'm not sure if it will stick or not.

[quote] I don't like the actress who plays Rachel/Raven and I've been glad she's been absent the third season.

I don't miss her at all and wouldn't mind her never coming back.

by Anonymousreply 15August 24, 2021 11:09 PM

I missed that about Mr. Freeze, r15 (I think i went into the kitchen then). Thanks for filling me in.

You're right that since Bruce Wayne looks to be in his 60s (despite the actor's fitness), Alfred is likely dead of old age.

I'm curious if Ra's al-Ghul and his Lazarus Pit will show up (which the resurrection of Jason Todd implies, especially since they mentioned Ra's al-Ghul earlier in the season). That could mean the resurrection of Donna, too.

by Anonymousreply 16August 25, 2021 2:26 AM

Good episode tonight. It didn't make any sense that the actress who plays Leslie Tompkins is clearly quite a bit younger than the actor who plays Bruce Wayne, but she was excellent.

The actor who plays Jason Todd may be homely, but he (or his stand-in) had a great naked butt.

It seems in this storyline as if half the people in the world know that Batman is really Bruce Wayne. It did not seem believable that Jason would give away the secret of Batman's secret identity so clumsily to the Scarecrow.

by Anonymousreply 17August 27, 2021 4:17 AM

OK, I’m midway between season two and I’m getting tired of every other episode being the flashback origin story of another added character. There are so many characters and not enough story. Does this end anytime soon and they concentrate on the ones they have already?

by Anonymousreply 18August 27, 2021 3:21 PM

So Bruce Wayne to totally having sex with the Robins right? They’re keeping it subdued because he recruits them underage.

by Anonymousreply 19August 28, 2021 4:49 AM

We need more scenes with Nightwing and Starfire together. I hate that the show won’t focus on their relationship. What is wrong with these writers?

Is Tim Drake going to be gay on this show?

The show has time to return to Dick and Starfire. Right now I really love Dick and Barbara and it's all due to how good Thwaites and Susanna Welch are. I couldn't stand Dick and Barbara's relationship in the comics.

Got a too quick glance at Superboy's ass in the latest episode. We need more of that.

by Anonymousreply 25September 17, 2021 3:28 AM

I can’t wait for this Gotham storyline to be over. I thought this was TITANS, not Nightwing and friends?

I want to see the Fearsome Five. How they showed Shimmer and Gizmo was terrible.

by Anonymousreply 26September 17, 2021 1:13 PM

They need to bring over Madame Rogue (and later, Gemini) to give Beast Boy a storyline.

And Terra. Where the hell is Terra?

by Anonymousreply 29September 17, 2021 2:22 PM

It would be very expensive to have Terra in this--using her powers would cost them a fortune for CGI. It would be like when they did "the Inhumans" on TV and they found the cost of animating Medusa's hair via CGI ridiculous expensive.

It's an odd show. This episode set almost entirely on Paradise Island and then in hell was very strange, but it did enliven things quite a bit. I'm glad Donna is coming back and that Hank isn't--I just find the character of Hawk too annoying. It's too soon yet to tell much about Tim as a character to like him.

I am surprised how sexually attracted I am to the actor who plays Jason Todd/The Red Hood--even though he was a model before this show I think his facial features are kind of ugly. But his body is unbelievable, and he brings so much BDE to the show. In comparison, Brenton Thwaites, who also has a sick body but is much, much more handsome, is such an (appropriately) laid back and meditative performer in his role as Dick Grayson that he's not nearly so sexy.

I'm wondering if they will set the fourth season in outer space and have everyone go to Tamaran--that looks to be what they're building towards.

by Anonymousreply 30September 24, 2021 8:45 PM

I started watching and then stopped as I thought it was pretty bad? Am I wrong? Love Brandon Thwaites. But I just found it cliche and not well written

by Anonymousreply 31September 24, 2021 8:51 PM

The writing has been better the third season than it was in the first two seasons. It still is very strangely inconsistent from season to season--a big deal is being made this season out of the fact that Dick Grayson supposedly never kills anyone, although it sure looked like he did the first season (and he certainly maimed several people for life).

It's not as well written as "WandaVision" or "The Boys," but it's still better written than almost all CW superhero shows. The acting is usually better than the writing, and though not every actor is top-notch, many of them are quite fine, particularly Brenton Thwaites (Nightwing), Mame-Anna Diop (Starfire), Curran Walters (Red Hood), and Ryan Potter (Beast Boy/Changeling). No one is an embarrassingly bad actor (although I would say Teagan Croft as Rachel/Raven is by far the most annoying, and Minka Kelly who plays Dawn/Dove is clearly more of a model than an actress).

The biggest problem the show has may actually be the budget--you just need a huge budget to make superhero action look real against an urban backdrop. They need to get the show out of Gotham City (it always looks a little cheesy, especially since they can't show any recognizable landmarks--it worked better when the show was set in San Francisco).

I would like less Batman on the show too--the actor they have (from Game of Thrones) has the build and the height to play Bruce Wayne, but not the gravitas.

by Anonymousreply 32September 24, 2021 9:07 PM

Well of the three finales this week- Only Murders in the Building, American Horror Story, this one, it definitely was the most straightforward and satisfying.

by Anonymousreply 33October 22, 2021 12:13 AM

It was okay--it was satisfying in terms of the fact that a lot of big things happen, but it was a really mixed season.

The weirdest thing about the show to me is its bizarrely cavalier treatment of death, which is very much like superhero comics but is somehow made enen stranger onscreen. Jason Todd killed dozens of people (he even made that woman kill other pedestrians by threatening otherwise to kill her child, and commit suicide by police), but he never had to pay any penalty for it other than he's not allowed to rejoin the Titans. Not does Batman face any consequences for killing the Joker in cold blood: He just said that he and Jason "both crossed the line" and will have to live with themselves.

Meanwhile, Jason himself, Dick, Donna, Tim, and 500-2000 people in Gotham all died, but they were all brought back to life either by the Lazarus Pit or by fighting their way back from the underworld. How could you ever watch anyone die on this show and think it had any permanence whatsoever? (Of course the Joker is not really dead, but the people on the show don't know that.)

Other bad things for me included: the terrible flat acting of the girl who plays Raven, the swallowing of her words that the actress who played Barbara Gordon always did, the inability of the set designers to make downtown Gotham City look anything other than downtown San Diego (everything shot outdoors is always in big modern plazas). And bizarre plotholes: why would Tim know that "the one who got away" was Selina Kyle? Why would Batman have text only for his security password? What are Starfire's new powers? (It seems she can generate force-fields to contain things, as well as blast energy, but this was never explained.)

Things I liked: that great black actress from "Schitt's Creek" who played Vee; Brenton Thwaites's beautiful body and quiet thoughtful acting; the actor who plays Gar; the idea that "420" and "69" would of course be Jason Todd's choice for a five-digit passcode; the great bare ass on the actor who played Jason Todd.

by Anonymousreply 34October 22, 2021 4:29 PM

The actress who plays Barbara Gordon is a country singer who lost her leg in an accident. She is a very beautiful woman, and has a lot of authority.

by Anonymousreply 35October 22, 2021 5:53 PM

I really loved the Blackfire and Superboy storyline. They are a great duo. Also loved Tim and Donna. I’m very attracted to Tim. He’s a cutie. Hope they give him a boyfriend. I like Gar, but they need to give him more.

Now we need more of Nightwing and Starfire together.

I really want the Fearsome Five with Jinx, Mammoth, Psimon, Shimmer, and Gizmo. I think a supervillain team dynamic would be very interesting to see on this show.

by Anonymousreply 36October 25, 2021 2:16 PM

Also, what happened with that British murdering lady that randomly popped up in the middle of the season? That was strange.

by Anonymousreply 37October 25, 2021 2:53 PM

Has Kartheiser been canceled yet?

by Anonymousreply 38October 25, 2021 2:58 PM

I think what I love most about this show is that Hawk, Beast Boy and Jason Todd have all shown their hard cocks online.

The first two episodes of S4 is available on HBO Max. So far, so good. And Tim gets a male love interest this season bringing his comics bisexuality into the series.

The actor Jay Lycurgo who plays Tim is the lead of a Netflix series that dropped a week or so ago and that character also has a bi storyline.

R29 Terra/Tara Markov of the comics and cartoons is sacred to me, as a former little girl who endured rejection and had a lot of fear & anger. I get very protective over adaptations of Terra’s character in a way that I don’t with many others in fiction. If TITANS fucked her character up or rendered her poorly—and I expect they would—I’d be fuming.

Terra was really well-written, acted and drawn in the Cartoon Network animé and also in the WB animated JUDAS PROJECT, and I’d be happy to leave it at that for now, at least until a better Titans’ adaptation comes along.
