He was a big Ronald Reagan fan. His messaging for his new book is interesting, but his past defines him. Reagan was the foundation for much of the mess today.

"Out on a Limb."
Give me a damned break.
He was a HUGE Bush defender. He helped pushed the Republican agenda that made them what they are today.
Andrew Sullivan was part of the problem.
That's not going out on a limb. That's being an enabler.

Typical Repug in wolves clothing. All in with Regan and Bush and the Republicans until it affected him personally. Then all of a sudden it matters and people need to wake up. NO, "people" didn't need to wake up Mr. Milky Loads Sullivan, YOU needed to wake up about 30 years ago before you helped put all these people in power.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | August 11, 2021 7:21 PM |
He's always changing his mind about the very positions he previously issued unequivocal, spittle-flecked, zero-sum tirades for. And then we're supposed to consider him reasonable and moderate! What about all of us who already had the opinions he finally came around to, after putting up with his wild accusations?

R8, that’s true. Sullivan was a Bush fanboy, and an enthusiastic supporter of the war in Iraq. The minute Bush announced that he was in favor of an amendment banning same sex marriage, it was all over. Sullivan is a classic “conservative”: it’s all fun and games until HIS rights are affected.

At the 2:20 mark he says:
[quote] look at how (at least) earnest they are in correcting their own mistakes and subjecting themselves to a certain amount of humility in the face of extraordinary events that we cannot understand as they are happening and do our best to make sense of
That is BULLSHIT.
The majority of the gay community saw what was happening over the course of the past 40 years, and we were outraged! We knew exactly what was going on.
For whatever reason, Andrew Sullivan decided to side with Republicans in their madness. But when their madness led them to the inevitable path towards TRUMP, all of a sudden NOW he's sorry? NOW he's saying that he has been "humbled???"
ARrrrggghh!!!
He is no different than any other Republican who has recently deserted the Republican Party. People are calling them out for creating this monster, and they don't want to take either the responsibility or the blame for Trump.
No wonder Joe Scarborough is kissing Andrew Sullivan's ass. Joe did the same thing. He propped up Trump, until it became clear that Trump is a monster. Then all of a sudden, he acts like he had nothing to do with it.

Exactly. Joe Scarborough and his bimbo co-host now 3rd wife were all chummy with Trump and hanging at Mar-a-Lago before the friendship turned south. They ragged on Hillary non stop and put Trump on his show every night non-stop. Even though Mika was supposed to be the counterpoint as the shows Democrat. What a disgrace to her father. When the UN published its report on war crimes committed during the 2009 conflict in Gaza, the Anglo-American mass media closed their eyes and pretended not to see anything wrong that had been done by their favorite side in that war, namely, Israel. Andrew was one of the few who changed his mind on the issue, ceasing to revere Israel and speaking in a more critical way, even denouncing the existence of an apartheid against the Palestinian people. That's why I can't hate Andrew as much as all of you here - there's a spark of intellectual honesty and moral clarity in his judgments, and that's more than I can say for the vast majority of political writers in the West.
Also, I see no difference between Andrew and the people of Datalounge when it comes to politics. Centrist, pro-capitalist, affectionate to certain figures in the Democratic Party establishment but hysterical against Bernie and his acolytes, skeptical of the trans movement and "wokeness" in general: what's the difference between him and all of you here? He just doesn't like the Clintons -- is that all that bothers you about him?
by Anonymous | reply 31 | August 11, 2021 7:51 PM |
The monstrosity and embarrassment of the repub party...not mention dangerous now, has "turned" some repubs. These repubs are disassociating themselves from the party...the looney circus is too much. Deep down, their principles are the same.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | August 11, 2021 7:57 PM |
"Is that all that bothers you about him?"
I'll put this so even a moron/simpleton like R31 can understand:
At the same time he was traipsing up and down Commercial Street in Ptown looking for raw dick to shoot cum up Andrew's phat, white, entitled ass, he was desperately trying to suck off GWB and the Republicans because they were right and everyone else was wrong about Iraq.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | August 11, 2021 8:02 PM |

Hi Andrew = R31
What's the difference? Well, no on on the DL has spent all of their time on national TV networks promoting the Conservative agenda as a gay man then turning when it doesn't work for him. Then he has an epiphany. Except we all ready knew what he just figured out. Secondly, on the DL you get called out for your bull shit. When has Milky Loads ever been called out face to face on TV by another openly gay progressive of the same age?
The age thing is important because we knew at the time what he was saying was bull shit. We knew Regan and Bush were anti-gay ass holes. He plays the media as if it Monday morning quarterbacking, but it's not. The vast majority of gays knew that and voted against that.
Sullivan gets to be bell of the ball when he is on TV as all the hosts kiss his ass to show how gay friendly they are.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | August 11, 2021 8:14 PM |
[quote] He was a big Ronald Reagan fan.
So was Elizabeth Warren. I have yet hear her to denounce that stance.
Sullivan is a conservative. That is a legitimate position on numerous issues even though I don't agree with that for the most part. It is the right wing and extremists that are the real issue. Just like on the left it is the extremists and the "left wing" acolytes that are the problem on numerous issues.
We are a centrist nation. Which is how a Democracy usually survives and prospers.
Despite his Repthuglicanism he still makes a lot of sense on many issues in this cockamamie world we now live in.
I am always happy when someone sees the light.

LOL. Intellectual honesty would be coming clean about your mistakes in a clear and HONEST way. Milky Loads just doges and makes excuses for his past mistakes in judgment and never really takes responsibility for them.
Moral clarity? Ha, Ha, that's a good one. Let us know when he actually dose something to make amends for helping to elevate the conservatives into modern day Deplorables. Writing a book to make more money is not making amends with all the bad politicians he help put into office.
Moral clarity would be announcing he will donate ALL of the proceeds of his book to a LGBTQ charity.

[quote]We are a centrist nation.
Sure, almost by definition, but the "center" as judged by officeholders and professional commentators is well to the right of the mainstream in this country, even of the majority. Sullivan is a centrist within the political establishment, but except for his support of gay marriage and legal pot (which are now supported by majority public opinion), his political views—especially economic—are to the right of public opinion.
[quote] I am always happy when someone sees the light.
Well, then give a little credit to Elizabeth Warren, who you claim hasn't publically disavowed her former conservatism—whereas she's explained in numerous publications and interviews exactly how and why her views changed, through her work on mortgage policy, while Milky just keeps making excuses for his Reaganite, Bushite past errors. And do give some credit to those of us who never bought into the conservative lies in the first place, and for good reason.

Sullivan thinks he's unique but the entire elite media is run by men and women just like him. Inevitably well connected and always Ivy League educated. They profess to be liberal until a politician actually attempts to enact progressive policy. Then they're shitting out articles all over new republic, the Atlantic, Washington Post and New York Times sneering and hissing about how it will simply NEVER work. And that liberals need to start cooperating more with those poor beleaguered conservatives, blah blah blah. What's amazing about these professional " great minds" is that they can be wrong again and again about everything under the sun and still be booked weekly to share their " expertise" on C SPAN and CNN.

by Anonymous | reply 61 | August 11, 2021 9:26 PM |
r58 And the same Dataloungers who use the Iraq War to spit poison at Andrew turned into fanatical Clintonists in 2016. If you speak ill of any Democrats who supported the Iraq War, like Joe Biden, you are in serious danger of earning a red tag and getting banned from this site. Why are certain things forgivable when done John Doe but not by Joe Sixpack? Does anyone here really believe that Andrew has more influence over America's history than, say, Biden or Hillary?
It's as Schopenhauer said: reasons are nothing more than excuses - they are disguises under which blind will hides. Datalounge wants to hate Andrew: the reasons for this are not important or even coherent; they are just an excuse to cover that hatred under the blanket of rationality and principle.

The fact that she was too stupid to see what he & his principles represented to everyday people at the time and that she ever supported his "ideals" on the economy still troubles me. It says something about her as a person. I personally don't think she ever "saw the light" - I think she saw the expediency of adopting a different path to a political career. Maybe the same reason she so eagerly wanted a trendy pedo-friendly Brit on her campaign team.

If Andrew Sullivan officially joined the Democratic Party, would y'all actually hate him any less? Or would you just savage him for contributing to the almost-inevitable rightward drift of the DP if the RP's takeover by Trump triggers a large exodus of non-Deplorables from the RP, and lots of them eventually end up joining (or at least, cooperating with) the DP?
Seriously, all of y'all who are busy celebrating the Republican Party's self-destruction don't seem to grasp that Lincoln Republicans have almost no real ideological differences with Enterprise Democrats... and the EDs would dearly LOVE to get the LRs on their side so they can kick those uppity, embarrassing Progressives (like AOC) to the curb.
Right now, Enterprise Democrats only humor the Progressives because party loyalty forces LRs to cooperate with Trumpians & automatically oppose everything the Enterprise Democrats propose... so they NEED Progressive support to get anything done. Don't think for a MINUTE that Pelosi, Schumer, and the rest won't welcome Romney, Collins, Murkowski, Kinziger, or even Marco Rubio & Dan Crenshaw, with open arms when/if they decide to cross the aisle someday. And when it happens, the Progressive Left AND Trumpian Right will be mostly powerless to oppose the new, more-right Democrats for years. At least, until the Progressives & Trumpians form an unholy alliance to just paralyze the government (if the New Democrats ever fall below 50% in the House, and 60% in the Senate) by voting against EVERYTHING in a big, nihilistic political orgy.

R70 - she was in her 30's during the 80's and she said she was previously a conservative.
It was her work with bankruptcy legislation in the mid-90's that turned her perspective. She readily admits she went into bankruptcy policy thinking that most people were irresponsible and overspent. The reality was the vast majority of those in bankruptcy were there due to medical bills. It totally changed her thinking on many issues.
Voting for Reagan twice is not comparable to what Sullivan has done for decades.

R76. Nope, not even close—have voted Democrat 100% of the time since I was first eligible to vote in 1976 (yes, I’m old), did AIDS work in the 80s and 90s (and found Sullivan’s essay on “The End of AIDS” offensive and irresponsible), and have been one of the only out gay men on the faculty of the college where I taught for 30 years. I dislike Sullivan, but he has been a major figure in gay letters. I want to read the book to see whether there is consistency to his thought, any growth or development, etc. you don’t have to read him—but dismissing me as a Deplorable for choosing to says more about your anti-intellectualism than about my character. I may come to the end of the book and decide it was a waste of time and money—that’s okay with me too.

I disagree that Andrew Sullivan has been a major figure in gay letters. He's written a lot about a lot of things, and gotten most of it wrong. He's a product of his time whom it will be easy to ignore as time goes on. It's like saying Katie Roiphe or Naomi Wolf were major figures in feminist letters: they made a splash (and then disappeared into crazyville). Sullivan stands out in his religious argument for same-sex marriage, for those who want that argument.

r80, I used the term "Lincoln Republicans" for lack of a better concise name. The schism within the Republican Party is absolutely real & growing daily.
It's existed for years, but I think Trump will be the final tipping point that gets them to finally realize that mainstream Democrats AREN'T the loony left-wing extremists they've always thought they were, and are frankly more like them than the freak show now running the Republican Party.
In a sense, Sullivan's shifting and evolving ideology is like that of MANY life-long Republicans. It's a multi-year process with multiple tipping points:
* The point when you start to increasingly disagree with your friends' views
* The point when you concede to yourself that the other party isn't completely fucked, and occasionally is right.
* The point where you vote for your first Democrat, because you just can't stand his or her Republican opponent (in my case, I voted for Alex Penelas for Dade County mayor)
* The point where you mostly vote for Democrats, but still support a few Republicans (in my case, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen)
* The point where you're genuinely horrified by the prospect of any Republican winning (for me, 2016), but still a nominal Republican because you don't want to take shit over it from family members... so instead, you just "go stealth" and quietly sow seeds of doubt among Republican friends & family members by pointing out blatant falsehoods & logical fallacies.
Technically, I *tried* to switch my party affiliation from "Republican" to "Florida Pirate Party" in 2016 as a protest against Trump (without risking getting disowned by my parents), but unfortunately, the FPP let its registration lapse after 2014. Sigh.

His apology fails to demonstrate true contrition because he:
1. Does not take full responsibility for what he did. It's couched in a bunch of excuses and justifications, abdicating true culpability for his actions - ALL of his actions.
2. Does not articulate precisely the harm he caused and the impact of his actions on other people beyond a generic negative impact.
3. Fails to articulate how he will make amends in precise and clear actions. Talk and words are cheap. What is he actually going to DO to make amends to all the people he harmed.
He's garbage - he's actually worse than Ken Mehlman. He's on par Thiel in asshattery.

r100, he's a US citizen now, and has been for many years, so the only country to which he CAN be legally deported IS the US.
Lots of Britons with similar ideology emigrated to the US in the 80s and 90s, especially after mainstream British Conservatives effectively repudiated Thatcherism. Frankly, a Reagan-inspired Thatcherite in 1990s Britain had no political future there, and they knew it... so they emigrated to the US, where such views weren't merely tolerated, but were in fact mainstream & overwhelmingly dominant.

He wrote a truly vile article trashing Al Gore for opposing the invasion of Iraq back in 2002.They apparently have no standards for the writers except that they hold a harvard degree. r106, the irony of your statement is, Republican-admiring Britons were PRECISELY the immigrants who perfectly fit into white middle-class American society.
Imaging a grumpy, bitter Labour-supporting Briton who decided to emigrate to the US after Tony Blair "sold out Labour's ideals". Had they been honest about their ideology, they wouldn't have been allowed into the US as TOURISTS (for being dangerously borderline-Communist), let alone made it past their first immigration interview.
Circa 1995, a Reagan/Thatcher-admiring Briton with a college degree and a few thousand dollars in savings would have been practically rubber-stamped "approved".

I remember reading it at the time it was in the news and it was not scholarly and was poorly written. She was right when she said she would never have gotten into Harvard Law under an affirmative action program. IIRC her proposed topic was rejected as just anecdotal - and indeed that's all it was - a bunch of students talking about how they were treated because they were a minority. When the university first rejected it she accused them of racism and they backed down and let her do it.
None of this is a proper application of affirmative action btw.

So of all of these 'selected' essays - how many did he get wrong and how many did he get right?
I would have to think he preselected a handful where he was wrong and loaded the rest with what he got right, albeit twisted around and out of context.
He still supports the Bell Curve bullshit, supports the Catholic church, and really wishes he could support conservatives, but they've just made it bad business now to be on that side.
What I really WOULD like to see is a scorecard for all of these pundits on both sides - how often were they right? How often were they wrong? You should have a score before you go on television - many of these people have a 95% wrong score, yet they're still there polluting the airwaves.
The media is reprehensible in making these people stars and noteworthy. Including Sullivan.

R184 - well, almost all channels are guilty of this. I'm not going to go down the Trumpism of 'don't trust the mainstream media' bullshit.
I'm just saying they have the same talking heads on all the time - because they always make themselves available. But there is little fact checking and they just let them say whatever shit they want - and there's no scorecard on the bullshit.
If I made the rules, you're allowed to go on TV and say factually wrong things THREE times and then that's it. You're off TV. That would make people a lot more careful about their choice of words. Or, when you go on TV, it has to say how often your opinions have been wrong.
There's a limit in how much opinion-based reporting we need.
by Anonymous | reply 185 | August 12, 2021 4:05 PM |
One of the reasons he left New York Magazine didn't have anything to do with "wokeness." It's that his columns were so shoddily written and so stuffed with lies and made-up bullshit, that the editorial staff got tired of re-writing everything he submitted. It was especially galling since he was a star there and made 2-3x what everyone else made.
You see, Andrew comes from the proud English journalism tradition of "making shit up." Most English newspapers flat-out lie all the time. Boris Johnson made his bones as a reporter in Brussels, making up total lies about what the EU was doing and sold it to an eager right-wing public in the UK who wanted to believe that Brussels was this hive of snooty, out-of-touch Eurocrats spending their good honest money on nonsense. Even if it wasn't true.
Andrew does the same fucking thing. And if he's ever ever EVER challenged, he rains down a blizzard of nonsense and spittle-flecked rage on anyone who dares challenge him, that only the most pissy-minded even want to bother with this tiresome Hobbit queen.

r180, the problem with a "scorecard" is, it assumes people's ideologies DON'T evolve over time, and that there's no such thing as public hypocrisy.
Hell, just look at someone like Al Sharpton. 25 years ago, he was a rabble-rousing left-wing extremist. Now, he's practically a moderate-Democrat elder statesman who sounds like the voice of wisdom, sanity & reason (esp. compared to both Progressives and Trumpians).
Or, look at George Bush (II). Circa 2004, he was a foaming-at-the-mouth right-wing extremist. Now, he's arguably a half-degree to the left of Sinema & Manchin. People would be shocked if he switched parties at this point, but ideologically, it really wouldn't be much of a leap.
by Anonymous | reply 189 | August 12, 2021 6:40 PM |
Oh I dunno. It's not about ideology, it's about judgement. Sullivan recklessly predicted all sorts of things when the Iraq War started and joined in (and led) a kind of lynch mob against anyone who disagreed with him. Events proved him to be completely wrong, about that and about a LOT of other things over the years.
Why should we listen to this hysteric? Look how bad his judgement is.

R189 I'm not r180 but the primary issue a lot of people have with our self important chattering classes is that many of them have a long history of being wrong about, well, everything . Just to name a few examples , the media insisted in 2000 that Al Gore was a lying phony And Bush was a downhome good old boy who understood real Americans . Before that They claimed that Bill Clinton's blow job was a crisis of national importance. They advocated for the Iraq war a few years later. They laughed and jeered at Occupy Wall Street in 2008. They insisted that Howard Dean was a freak unfit for office because he let out an enthusiastic yelp . They said that Hilarys e mails were deeply concerning . in 2016. They treated Trump as a rather amusing court jester until he wasn't. As recently as a couple of years ago one of the main op ed writers at the Washington post Richard Cohen was sneering at the idea of a minimum wage for waiters because " sometimes I like to punish" servers (I'm not making this up). I could go on but I won't bore you.And yet they secure not only pundit jobs but jobs at prestige outlets such as the NYT, Atlantic, Washington Post and New Republic which are read ( and influence the decisions) of people with a lot of power.

Yeah - that's pretty much all conservatives, but particularly English ones.
I remember one panel he was on that was discussing the Catholic church abuse scandals and other affairs, and he basically ended it with "Well, we know it's not perfect, but it's the only church we have." What rational person says something like that?
I hope he gets blowback from most gay people who meet him - he shouldn't be allowed in civil gay society. He needs to be shunned, like Mehlman.

Sullivan has always went along with the direction of which way the wind was blowing. He was a major GWB supporter until after he got reelected and lost support from the media and public from all the Iraq war crimes and lies. He is also very racist and against blacks being in power which is why he was vehemently against Obama as president. But Trump was his biggest hero. But now he's, what? Against Trump because he lost re-election. The jig is up. The fact that anybody can be such a duplicitous sack of shit and simply just appear on Morning Joe and apologize despite having a career long record of this shit and be considered atoned for their sins? Is that all it takes? It's all cringe worthy.

Who the fuck does he think he is?
African Americans are centuries removed from Africa. This is their country too rather Andrew likes it or not. They've helped to shape the history and culture of this country for the better. American history literally runs through the blood veins of African Americans who actually has a centuries long history here. Andrew has no history here, he brought his racist ass here and this country has been good to him and given him everything he's wanted and than some.
Fuck him for feeling as though African Americans shouldn't be full participants of their own democracy they helped to build in their own country that they actually have a long history in, but andrew doesn't. He's nothing but entitled British white trash, who will never be genuinely American.

What also annoys me about him is that he is booked as a conservative voice and time and time again, when I've seen him asked who he voted for, he pivots and says he 'voted his conscience'.
He never stands up and says - no, I didn't vote for this Republican garbage. He hides it. He clearly still wants the attention and support of conservatives and Republicans. And it's bullshit when he says "I'm on no one's side" - yes, yes you are.
That's all you need to know about him. Fraudulent contrarian who has done a lot of harm - no matter what he professes to say.

Voting your conscience is Republican bullshit.
A lot of them did that in 2016, and we lived through 4 years of hell with our first dictator president.
Andrew Sullivan is that stereotypical gay white man everyone hates so much. He lives up to every despicable quality in spades. He is very unself aware, and he cuts corners when discussing important subjects he's really not qualified to speak on. Hell, there's even been Asian sociologists and writers tell him he's not qualified to speak on the struggles of African Americans and the comparison some whites love to make between the two groups.
Why? Because there's two different histories in America with African Americans and Asian Americans and that's something Asians have always pointed out. African Americans were held in human bondage for centuries in the US, and after the civil war and slavery " ended" African Americans were sabotaged and every corner by a racist white supremacist government who never wanted competition from African Americans. That wasn't the case from the " model minority" Asians. So to try and compare the two is insane.
Andrew Sullivan is a fucking asshole who I wish would disappear and leave America and take his hatred and haggard ass back to his own country where he belongs. There's enough assholes native born here, we don't need imported ones too.

He's not in any position to come to the US and they and call shots in a country he immigrated too. He's very arrogant and dismissive of American history and the struggles of other people, people who have been here long before his great x 7 grandparents were alive. Probably longer!
I just really hate people like Andrew who comes here and tries to change the country for the worst. It's kinda like Cubans who come here and vote for Republicans, no matter how bad they are. They don't realize that by voting for people like Trump and other Republicans, they're helping to take this country backwards and destroy the hard work so many people have faught for as far as progress is concerned. But I also suspect a lot of these new " Americans" who immigrate here who vote Republican don't care either.
Their conservativism leads to other people's setbacks and further disenfranchisement and marginalization etc. That's the problem with having outsiders emigrate here and not understanding the inequality or the imbalance of our political system in the United states. They're just all to eager to make racist white conservatives happy at any cost at the expense of other historical American legacy ethnic groups.
And that's exactly what people like Andrew represents to me. Just an all around bad export of bad ideas and not having any respect for the history that already existed in America before he got here.

FYI, r217, Andrew is pro-choice.
Andrew's religious beliefs are... to put it mildly... "complicated".
The very simplified version: Andrew's a big 'ol show queen who loves the Roman Catholic Church's pomp and regalia, and while growing up in England, being (Roman) Catholic allowed him to feel like he was just a tiny bit better than the CoE.
If you ever want to REALLY get under his skin and annoy him in ways that will bother him for a few hours, get him to elaborate on his personal religious beliefs... then subtly point out all the obvious ways they align almost PERFECTLY with American Episcopalianism, and deviate in MAJOR ways from non-Hispanic American Roman Catholicism. If you come out and lay it on him flat-out, he'll just swat you down... but if you slowly & deviously lay out your case without ever making it official, he'll slowly realize it on his own & go into slow burn.
by Anonymous | reply 226 | August 13, 2021 8:16 PM |

> I thought it was mainly protestants.
It's more complicated than that.
The CoE isn't 'Protestant' per se (the way Lutherans are), because it never had an official beef with Catholic THEOLOGY. Its REAL gripe was with the people in Rome who were RUNNING the Church (in their opinion, into the ground).
Yes, the King was the official reason for the CoE's independence... but contrary to Roman Catholic propaganda, it wasn't just something that got pulled out of a hat on a political whim so the King could get divorced. The seeds had been sown YEARS earlier, and all the KING really did was capitalize on the EXISTING sentiment and give it the final nudge to make it official.
CoE priests have full "apostolic succession", just like Roman Catholic priests do (ie, they can allegedly trace their priesthood back through a line of priests extending all the way back to St. Peter himself). I'm not sure, but I think SOME Lutheran churches (esp. the state churches of Scandinavian countries) are the same way.
The American Episcopalian church took it a step further after the Revolution, and laid the framework for what eventually became today's global church that's (mostly) in agreement about theology, but independent of any one country's politics or state church. As far as American Episcopals are concerned, the CoE and Roman Catholic Church are two "catholic" churches that are no more or less equal than any other. The RCC officially begs to differ, of course... but "on the front lines", there's no hard feelings between them anymore.
Trivia: contrary to what most Americans believe, "The Troubles" in Northern Ireland were NOT a civil war between "Episcopalians" and "Roman Catholics"... it was a civil war between EVANGELICAL PROTESTANTS and Catholics. Northern Ireland's British Population is descended from evangelical protestants who were EXPELLED from the British mainland and sent to northern Ireland after the English Civil War. From what I've been told, during The Troubles, CoE members often found themselves caught in the crosshairs REGARDLESS of who was shooting at whom on that particular day, and if you were CoE & lived in England, you just Did Not Go to Northern Ireland... EVER.
