Did George Michael dislike "I Want Your Sex"?

I don't think he was embarrassed by it, but it's not much of a song. Really silly in hindsight.

I was pissed when he didn’t sing it on the “25” tour. How the fuck do you not perform one of your handful of number 1’s on a greatest hits tour?

It was one of the most thoughtfully penned songs of 1987. One could argue that time still has not caught up with the nuance of sentiment expressed in its lyrics. It’s an important 45. A milestone when discussing pop culture in the age of HIV.

The woman in the video was supposedly his "girlfriend." No doubt they had great times together, going shopping for clothes at the mall, etc.

I love it. Though some say it's a Prince knock-off and that George was inspired by Prince. I can see that but it's still a great song.

The video had a message George wrote with lipstick on his semi-nude Asian girlfriend: "Explore Monogamy." If he wrote something with lipstick on a girl's body, he must have stood behind it.

I love that the title can have two meanings: I want to have sexual relations with you and I want you because you're male or female.

I like it and have the hit single. It was very controversial at the time. It was his first BIG solo hit, went to #2 on Billboard's Singles Chart and earned him a platinum record. Good song and part of music history!!

MTV played it ALL the time. Drove parents and baptist preachers crazy, so the song did its job.

Watch George sing it live in concert on YouTube. The video takes a while to start the song and is quite dramatic, but once it starts, he is sex on a stick. The video is grainy but insanely hot!

I remember an MTV VJ saying that was his girlfriend in the video and I was really confused by that. Even as a preteen he pinged for me.

I forgot that this was actually from the Beverly Hills Cop 2 soundtrack. It's in the scene at the strip club.

R14 I know what you mean. I still wonder if the "girlfriend" was in on the ruse or if she truly thought she could reform him or did she actually think he was into her in that way? The video, though amusing almost surreal theater, was hardly convincing in its passion. The simulated "sex" was mechanical at best. Like mannequins in the sheets.

I was hoping for an alternative video with Dr Ruth strutting around in full dominatrix gear with the occasional "and then you take the man's penis" thrown in for good measure.

Just by chance I was in a record store yesterday and bought that single in the oldies section because it was being discussed on this website!

I bought the CD single some years back with the full-length 13-minute version. So good.

Oddly they didn't include it on the Faith anniversary reissue about 10 years ago.

I think he ended up disliking all of Faith. His entire album after Faith was him erasing Faith

I wonder if he gave strict instructions about remastering his albums as the first two haven't received the usual "make 'em LOUD" remaster treatment.

I think it’s a great song but not my favourite . I remember when the video came out my aunt who was a huge fan was laughing about how he was gay and had no interest in the woman on the video.

My stepfather knew he was gay going back to the 80s. He always said he’s a “f@g”. Same with the kid on Who’s The Boss?

When it was finally confirmed he was gay, his career was killed for good.

Agree with r30; at least in the USA, his conflict with Sony and refusal to appear in the videos negatively impacted his career here. Additionally, the emergence of hip-hop and grunge made his classic r&b inflected sound dated.

It didn’t sound dated. Also, Americans have always been extremely homophobic as well.

R&B was very healthy in the 1990s. Even Cher tried to get on the bandwagon when they remixed her UK hit "One by One" for the US market.

I’ve always hated this song, even though it made puritans squirm. My loathing is so deep that my brain won’t properly remember the song; I keeps playing ‘Faith’ instead. Conversely, I absolutely love ‘Too Funky!’ No accounting for taste.

It’s a bit precious for a pop-star to refuse to make an appearance in his own videos. Once, for ‘Freedom’ was fine, since he substituted supermodels; but after that, he looked to be up his own ass.

‘Too Funky’ was a great song and I loved that video too. It came out a few years after this one though.

‘Freedom 90’ worked, but I agree he needed to stop being so difficult after. Just do your music videos without being made up to look a way you don’t like.

I remember the song being dubbed "I Want Your Love" so it could be played on radio. I thought that was so stupid. Man, was it the 50s or the 80s?

He was criticized for that song. I remember that 60 Minutes Australia interviewer laying into him for that song.

I absolutely hate this song. There is nothing to it. George knew it would cause a controversy thus get him to the top. He paid the price over the long haul when he started to write songs that actually meant something. His later work never sold like this crap song did.

I could never look at him without thinking about Jonathan Schmitz.

He supposedly had sex and a real relationship with the Asian model from the video. I think he said that he didn’t explore sex with men until after her.

He explored sex with men much earlier than that.

He said he was living a bisexual lifestyle in the 80s and slept with men and women. He's not a gold star. And he was partying and on drugs a lot. I just figured himself out as solidly gay by his mid-20 to late 20s once he really fell in love with a man.

GM basically said in an interview in the 2000s that he identifies as gay because he falls in love with men and prefers them. Women he only feels sexual attraction but it's probably less intense. So technically he was bisexual but just lost interest in the opposite sex. I don't see why he'd lie about that. He lived publicly as gay from 1998 till his death and was outspoken about gay rights.
