Did George Michael dislike "I Want Your Sex"?

He didn't perform it on tours post-Faith and it wasn't featured on his Twenty Five compilation despite being one of his biggest hits.

Was George embarrassed by the song and/or the video?

I don't think he was embarrassed by it, but it's not much of a song. Really silly in hindsight.

by Anonymousreply 1August 17, 2021 10:29 PM

Idk if he did but I always hated it

by Anonymousreply 2August 17, 2021 10:31 PM

It’s really stupid to say “I Want Your Sec”. Who in the hell wrote that song??

by Anonymousreply 3August 17, 2021 10:33 PM

I was pissed when he didn’t sing it on the “25” tour. How the fuck do you not perform one of your handful of number 1’s on a greatest hits tour?

by Anonymousreply 4August 17, 2021 10:34 PM

It was one of the most thoughtfully penned songs of 1987. One could argue that time still has not caught up with the nuance of sentiment expressed in its lyrics. It’s an important 45. A milestone when discussing pop culture in the age of HIV.

by Anonymousreply 5August 17, 2021 10:47 PM

It was terrible.

by Anonymousreply 6August 17, 2021 10:47 PM

The woman in the video was supposedly his "girlfriend." No doubt they had great times together, going shopping for clothes at the mall, etc.

by Anonymousreply 7August 17, 2021 11:03 PM

I love it. Though some say it's a Prince knock-off and that George was inspired by Prince. I can see that but it's still a great song.

by Anonymousreply 8August 18, 2021 1:24 AM

The video had a message George wrote with lipstick on his semi-nude Asian girlfriend: "Explore Monogamy." If he wrote something with lipstick on a girl's body, he must have stood behind it.

by Anonymousreply 9September 29, 2021 4:50 AM

I love that the title can have two meanings: I want to have sexual relations with you and I want you because you're male or female.

by Anonymousreply 10September 29, 2021 4:56 AM

I like it and have the hit single. It was very controversial at the time. It was his first BIG solo hit, went to #2 on Billboard's Singles Chart and earned him a platinum record. Good song and part of music history!!

by Anonymousreply 11September 29, 2021 4:57 AM

MTV played it ALL the time. Drove parents and baptist preachers crazy, so the song did its job.

by Anonymousreply 12September 29, 2021 5:01 AM

Watch George sing it live in concert on YouTube. The video takes a while to start the song and is quite dramatic, but once it starts, he is sex on a stick. The video is grainy but insanely hot!

I remember an MTV VJ saying that was his girlfriend in the video and I was really confused by that. Even as a preteen he pinged for me.

by Anonymousreply 14September 29, 2021 5:07 AM

I forgot that this was actually from the Beverly Hills Cop 2 soundtrack. It's in the scene at the strip club.

Great song.

by Anonymousreply 15September 29, 2021 5:11 AM

R14 I know what you mean. I still wonder if the "girlfriend" was in on the ruse or if she truly thought she could reform him or did she actually think he was into her in that way? The video, though amusing almost surreal theater, was hardly convincing in its passion. The simulated "sex" was mechanical at best. Like mannequins in the sheets.

by Anonymousreply 16September 29, 2021 5:13 AM

I was hoping for an alternative video with Dr Ruth strutting around in full dominatrix gear with the occasional "and then you take the man's penis" thrown in for good measure.

by Anonymousreply 17September 29, 2021 5:45 AM

Just by chance I was in a record store yesterday and bought that single in the oldies section because it was being discussed on this website!

by Anonymousreply 18October 1, 2021 4:00 AM

R18 And there you go!!

One of his lesser efforts in my opinion but an okay song.

by Anonymousreply 20October 1, 2021 4:05 AM

Awesome! r18

I bought the CD single some years back with the full-length 13-minute version. So good.

Oddly they didn't include it on the Faith anniversary reissue about 10 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 21October 1, 2021 4:05 AM

I think he ended up disliking all of Faith. His entire album after Faith was him erasing Faith

by Anonymousreply 22October 1, 2021 4:23 AM

I wonder if he gave strict instructions about remastering his albums as the first two haven't received the usual "make 'em LOUD" remaster treatment.

by Anonymousreply 23October 1, 2021 4:25 AM

One of his worst songs! It sucked!

by Anonymousreply 24October 1, 2021 4:26 AM

It’s not the VIDEO that embarrassed him. It was . . .

by Anonymousreply 25October 1, 2021 4:32 AM

I really enjoyed part 3 of “I Want Your Sex”.

by Anonymousreply 26October 1, 2021 7:22 AM

I think it’s a great song but not my favourite . I remember when the video came out my aunt who was a huge fan was laughing about how he was gay and had no interest in the woman on the video.

by Anonymousreply 27October 1, 2021 3:41 PM

My stepfather knew he was gay going back to the 80s. He always said he’s a “f@g”. Same with the kid on Who’s The Boss?

He called him being gay since he was a kid.

by Anonymousreply 28October 1, 2021 3:46 PM

So did the gay rumors kill his career? By the early 90s he was MIA.

by Anonymousreply 29October 1, 2021 3:59 PM

R29 I think him refusing to appear in his videos and going head to head with Sony hurt his career. He became known as difficult.

When it was finally confirmed he was gay, his career was killed for good.

by Anonymousreply 30October 1, 2021 4:01 PM

Agree with r30; at least in the USA, his conflict with Sony and refusal to appear in the videos negatively impacted his career here. Additionally, the emergence of hip-hop and grunge made his classic r&b inflected sound dated.

by Anonymousreply 31October 1, 2021 4:06 PM

Fastlove sounded dated? Too Funky?

by Anonymousreply 32October 1, 2021 4:09 PM

It didn’t sound dated. Also, Americans have always been extremely homophobic as well.

by Anonymousreply 33October 1, 2021 4:12 PM

R&B was very healthy in the 1990s. Even Cher tried to get on the bandwagon when they remixed her UK hit "One by One" for the US market.

by Anonymousreply 34October 1, 2021 4:14 PM

I’ve always hated this song, even though it made puritans squirm. My loathing is so deep that my brain won’t properly remember the song; I keeps playing ‘Faith’ instead. Conversely, I absolutely love ‘Too Funky!’ No accounting for taste.

[quote] I think him refusing to appear in his videos and going head to head with Sony hurt his career.

It’s a bit precious for a pop-star to refuse to make an appearance in his own videos. Once, for ‘Freedom’ was fine, since he substituted supermodels; but after that, he looked to be up his own ass.

by Anonymousreply 35October 1, 2021 4:31 PM

‘Too Funky’ was a great song and I loved that video too. It came out a few years after this one though.

‘Freedom 90’ worked, but I agree he needed to stop being so difficult after. Just do your music videos without being made up to look a way you don’t like.

by Anonymousreply 36October 1, 2021 4:34 PM

The woman in the video is Asian, so according to DL lore, that’s all George Michael ever needed to show proof of his homosexuality.

by Anonymousreply 37October 1, 2021 4:45 PM

I remember the song being dubbed "I Want Your Love" so it could be played on radio. I thought that was so stupid. Man, was it the 50s or the 80s?

by Anonymousreply 38October 1, 2021 5:38 PM

He was criticized for that song. I remember that 60 Minutes Australia interviewer laying into him for that song.

by Anonymousreply 39October 1, 2021 5:40 PM

Molly Meldrum?

by Anonymousreply 40October 1, 2021 5:41 PM

R40 no a dude. It’s a thread here

Molly Meldum IS a dude.

by Anonymousreply 42October 1, 2021 5:59 PM

I absolutely hate this song. There is nothing to it. George knew it would cause a controversy thus get him to the top. He paid the price over the long haul when he started to write songs that actually meant something. His later work never sold like this crap song did.

by Anonymousreply 43August 30, 2022 3:07 AM

I could never look at him without thinking about Jonathan Schmitz.

Asian girls are the last stop on the pussy train before Homotown.

by Anonymousreply 45August 30, 2022 3:38 AM

He supposedly had sex and a real relationship with the Asian model from the video. I think he said that he didn’t explore sex with men until after her.

by Anonymousreply 46August 30, 2022 3:59 AM

He explored sex with men much earlier than that.

by Anonymousreply 47August 30, 2022 4:05 AM

He said he was living a bisexual lifestyle in the 80s and slept with men and women. He's not a gold star. And he was partying and on drugs a lot. I just figured himself out as solidly gay by his mid-20 to late 20s once he really fell in love with a man.

by Anonymousreply 48August 30, 2022 4:08 AM

*He

by Anonymousreply 49August 30, 2022 4:09 AM

GM basically said in an interview in the 2000s that he identifies as gay because he falls in love with men and prefers them. Women he only feels sexual attraction but it's probably less intense. So technically he was bisexual but just lost interest in the opposite sex. I don't see why he'd lie about that. He lived publicly as gay from 1998 till his death and was outspoken about gay rights.

by Anonymousreply 50August 30, 2022 4:22 AM

<- oh honey they all say that
