Island Kingdom on Tanquir
Thinking about vacationing on Tanquir but don't know that much about it.
Is Cecile still the Queen of Tanquir?
I hear Grant Harrison was hiding out there for a while. Is he still there? Knowing Grant, he's likely plotting to overthrow the king.
I also heard Quinton McCord got into a big showdown with Silas Crocker on Tanquir at some archaeological dig. But that was years and years ago, before Quint was even married to Nola.
What else can you tell me about Tanquir? Is it worth the trouble to going?

Back when I was working in Houston for my late Uncle, Alex Wheeler, I was briefly involved with Princess Jasmine of Tanquir.
This would have been before Cecile became the Queen. Wonder how Jasime and Cecile got along.

Princess Katherine (Reva) of San Cristobel

There will only ever be one Donna Love for me, and that's Anna Stuart (who also happens to be a fellow native of West Virginia).
Likewise, I prefer Nancy Frangione's Cecile to Susan Keith's. Of course (and thankfully), it helps that Frangione's Cecile is the longer-running. My mother watched this one, and "Days". And even when I was less than ten years old, I LOVED the Cecile storylines...the duplicitous, gold-digging tramp!

I used to love how Alma Rudder would call Cecile, "Cecil". I liked the Cecile/Cass/Felicia/Wallingford years. I loved the way she went after Blaine and then the mess she made of Jamie's life was great too. That Jamie Frame was always being duped by women.

Yes, the Cory living room set would be the longest running on AW First appeared in 1975 soon after Rachel and Mac married. Last scene of the series took place in that room.
However, it should be noted that the show completely redid the Cory set in 1987. Original set had darker paneling and did not include the foyer or the staircase.

Wasn’t Fashions being used in ATWT from 1981 ish to the end? Or did they stop using it before that.

by Anonymous | reply 69 | July 21, 2021 10:42 PM

Company had a long initial run, but it sort of merged with the Cooper Diner and had a few different looks/lives. It was one of the sets in the last few years where, once they had some sets in Peapack, they built a permanent set in studio......that one, the Spaulding mansion, the courthouse and a few others were all built in studio. Point is, it looked very different.
Fashions, I think, looked pretty similar all throughout its existence.

Reading Parker Posey's memoir and this is the sole mention of ATWT:
[quote] My granny and my aunt Toni-Anne were much more grounded. They’d eat on TV trays in the bedroom and watch “the stories.” When I was on As the World Turns, it made them very proud. “You got my widow’s peak,” Granny would say, before talking about how handsome Holden was. Holden was the hunk on the show, played by Jon Hensley. “He’s really nice, too, Granny,” I’d say. “You’d like him.” I told her how, on my first day of work, the woman who played my aunt Barbara said, “Be careful who you share your secrets with because these walls have ears.” Colleen Zenk turned on the waterworks like nothing I’ve seen in my life. Granny loved that dish. As the World Turns was one of the earliest soaps—its first airing was shot live in 1956. She loved Eileen Fulton, who played Lisa Grimaldi, and Helen Wagner, who played Nancy Hughes, both of whom were there in the beginning. I’d tell her how classy and nice they both were in real life, since they’d kept her company as she took to bed and martyred herself in her forty years of heartbreak. I told her how nice the producer of the show, Laurie Caso, was when he asked if I’d like to get out of my contract early because they needed to put Holden in a coma before Labor Day (his love story with Lily was huge and they needed to focus on that). I told her how Laurie hugged me like a dad and was so sweet that I cried. She loved all that.

I'm not sure what iconic is supposed to mean. If it is the most memorable or notable or most significant of a type, I think Lisa (vixen) and Bob (stalwart hero) are both iconic from ATWT. Maybe add Lucinda (rich bitch) and Lily (young heroine). Jo (long-suffering heroine) from SFT is as iconic as you can get. Bert (family matron) on GL or Nancy (family matron) on ATWT and Chris (wise elder) on ATWT, Grandpa (wise elder) on ATWT, or Pa (wise elder) on GL could be iconic. Philip (stud) on GL and Holden (stud) on ATWT are a different type of icon.

You can't argue with the SOD tie. But if we're doing P&G here is the iconic list in my mind (in no particular order and 5 from each show):
Another World:
Rachel
Steve
Alice
Mac
Iris
As The World Turns:
Lisa
John Dixon
Lucinda
James Stenbeck
Nancy
Guiding Light:
Bert
Roger Thorpe
Alan Spaulding
Rita
Reva
Edge of Night:
Nancy
Mike
Raven
Adam Drake
Nicole
Search for Tomorrow:
Jo
Stu
Jennifer Pace
Stephanie
Irene

A few weeks ago I came across a YouTube video of Guiding Light during its Peapack period, and there was a scene where characters were standing outside in front of a garbage dumpster while having a conversation. I don't know who the characters were, but I thought it was an embarrassment that a nationally televised network show looked so poorly. The network and production company should be ashamed of themselves that they let the show get to that point. I think they would have been better off making it a 30-minute show; shooting the show in a studio in Jersey City or Hoboken, NJ; and having all scenes take place on 10 permanent sets in said studio.

R114 They really struggled with it, for sure.
After a while they did get some good spots for outdoor shooting, but I think either Wheeler or one of the directors really wanted to use EVERY piece of real estate they could for scenes.
Even in the last few months or so, they did a chase between Edmund and Jeffrey on rooftops, and it looked dreadful, because the roofs were not very aesthetically pleasing.
The thing is.....they couldn't do something like, say, the Hall of Mirrors for Roger. Not that the Hall would have been all that expensive to have built back in the day. But something like 70 percent of the non acting crew for GL was gone. They only had a few camera, sound and production people left on staff. Which was one of the big reasons to do that model.

Peapack would have gotten better. They were doing some cutting edge stuff. It needed, probably, another year to get it right. My issue with Peapack was that they didn't even try to match up the Peapack locations with what we were used to when it was filmed in the studio.
When they moved the show to Peapack, in my mind, they should have reset the entire show. If you can't find a proper Spaulding Mansion stand-in in Peapack, then maybe you write the Spauldings out who reimagine them. And I know that's minor and petty, but it was my one big hangup.

Having watched British and other daily, international soaps-telenovelas for decades, what they were attempting to do was certainly different for U.S. daytime soaps, but I'd hardly call it cutting edge. Some of GL's baby steps reminded me of Brookside (UK) back in the 80s.

I remember Nancy F. returning to AMC a couple of times as Tara for brief appearances, in between her AW stints I think. There really wasn’t space for Tara at the point, but I wished they’d brought her back more. Years later, when Tara’s SORASd daughter Kelsey was making trouble in Pine Valley, they brought back original Tara, Karen Lynn Gorney for a couple of weeks. She looked old and frumpy, but La Lucci probably preferred playing against her instead of sexy Nancy.

The cinematography, in you want to call it that, vastly improved in the last year. The writing was improving. The show was starting to hit a stride. Would it have lasted? I don’t know but I think they should have given it a year and canceled ATWT first. I never understood why GL had to experiment, slashing its budget, but ATWT, as low rated, didn’t? GL was getting better. It was watchable again and looking at its last year, compared to the remaining four, looks like Oscar material.

Not to post DAYS content on a P&G thread.
But this is what P&G should have done in some way with GL or ATWT at the end. Guess the cancellations were about ten years too soon, because this streaming shit is so easy now.
And it wouldn't have to be what Prospect Park did either. They could have made five to ten episode seasonettes a few times a year.

R137 Back in 2007, ATWT and Y&R did an online web series wherein they played the "Alison Stewart" and "Amber Moore" characters. (See linked article.) It was called "L.A. Diaries," and featured Marnie Schulenberg and Adrienne Frantz. I'm guessing it was primarily directed to the same demo as the two actresses themselves: young females. .. As you imply, broadband and streaming back then wasn't what it is today, and most of the old fraus who watched these soaps were probably still using a dial-up connection (if even .. lol).
ATWT also did that online casting show called, "InTurn." They got three series out of it. When they announced the second series, The Hollywood Reporter wrote, "The first season of the Web-based reality show, which debuted in the summer, wound up becoming the most-streamed program of those specifically created for CBS’ broadband channel Innertube."
[quote] “We felt this was a terrific companion narrative to the show,” said Barbara Bloom, senior vp daytime at CBS Entertainment. “It was fun, added engagement, and it also boosted our ratings on-air.”

Speaking of Prospect Park, I always thought they should have made All My Children and One Life to Live weekly series. First run AMC for 25 weekly episodes. After AMC's season finale, run OLTL for 25 weekly episodes. From there, alternate the seasons between the two shows. This way, fans will have their shows all year around -- just not on a daily basis.

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS and our wonderful Sony and CBS will be giving me, Scoche Marin, my own web series on Paramount+ as Katherine Shepherd Reynolds Chancellor Thurston Sterling Murphy. It will feature Katherine’s trials and tribulations as she rears the Newman-Chancellor scion she conceived with Nick Newman and whom she recently gave birth. My character, the grande dame of Genoa City, will be running for mayor.

I'm not sure, R144. I thought they put out four shows per week (Monday through Thursday). The fifth day (Friday) was used to recap the week's shows or do some type of behind-the-scene interviews. I could be wrong. I watched the shows when they first came on, but I think I stopped watching after awhile.

Well, yeah, but I'm sure they already know how many unique IPs have been streaming DOOL at NBC.com and now at Peacock. .. I think this five-episode series is more of a promotional thing to get people who haven't already signed-up for Peacock to do so, since that's the only place it will be shown. .. In that regard, it's just like the eight-episode "Last Blast Reunion" series that Days did in 2019. That one was done to get more people to sign-up for the then-new DOOL App, which viewers had to have, if they wanted to see the series right away.

Prospect Park started off releasing four new episodes of AMC and OLTL each week.
However, they quickly realized they didn't have enough episodes in the can to keep releasing four new episodes a week. They'd run out of episodes! So, two weeks after the debut, they cut back to releasing just two new episodes a week.
Also of note, the first few weeks of Prospect Park had some characters saying "Shit" and :"Fuck" on air without any bleeping. However, the quickly reversed course and started bleeping those words again.

It's no big secret that two of the reasons Days remain on the air is because they have gotten the budget down to a nickel and some spit and the show is streaming hit for NBC, first NBC.com and now Peacock. While I'm certain that both NBC and Sony would like the network airing to do better ratings wise, both groups are more than happy with the streaming numbers. And quite frankly, even the air numbers, demographically, aren't that far off from the other three.

Not long. This confrontation was held until the 1981 writer's strike was over. Pretty much the minute he could get them the script pages, he did. I remember reading several times that they pretty much did it the moment the strike ended and Doug's pages could legally be in their hands again.

But Jane was in talks w/Doug Marland to move to ATWT, and she left GH and then he died. I believe this was the story Jeanne Cooper was also considering leaving YR for, and I think Jeanne and Jane were to play mother and daughter.

I've always suspected that the story Jeanne Cooper/Jane Eliot were attracted to was something to do with the Lucinda-Royce-Neal saga, with Jeanne playing the mother, Gloria, and Jane either to play Neal or to play yet another sister to Lucinda. It seems so strange that they set up yet another rich story for Liz Hubbard, hired big actors, and then stranded the whole thing abruptly with Neal's death and Royce being mentally ill.

R198 because Douglas Marland died - so new writers had to take over and execute his long-term story projection. He might not have laid it out.
We do know of a fact, Jane Elliot quit General Hospital to move over to As The World Turns, as Marland promised her a juicy role. But before Jane could sign with ATWT, Marland died. And Jane had already given her notice at GH. She did burn some bridged when announcing her leaving, by expressing her unhappiness with her current storyline. So she couldn't even ask to go back to GH.

R200 - They had Jane's character spread a rumor around town that her daughter-in-law had an abortion.
Jane's was pissed about that, because she is a pro-choice activist. And they had her character run around town, making it seem that there is something wrong having an abortion.
Jane said that on Daytime, she has played characters that has killed people, ruined people's lives, slept with other women's husbands. She had no problem doing any of that.
But she did have a problem playing a character who shames another character for having an abortion. That is where she drew the line.

In the interview with Genie Francis below, she mentions that she had talks with 3 or 4 soaps in 1990 before deciding to go to All My Children and play Ceara Conner, debuting in that role in June 1990. Go to 24:00 in the video below to hear that part.
The interviewer did not ask about what other shows she had talks with. But now I'm curious about it. Likely at least one of the three other soaps she talked to was a P&G soap.

I'm having a hard time picturing Grant and Genie in a love scene together. Just isn't working in my brain.
If Genie had played Beth, she would have been good at the emoting. Very good. But with Genie in the role, Beth would have been much more of a front burner character. In 1989-91, Beth was more of a supporting character to Phillip.
Similarly, if Genie had been in the role, Beth wouldn't have been written out in 1991 when Grant needed time off to grieve his parents. Instead of sending them both to Arizona, they would have sent Phillip to prison or something, while Beth stayed in Springfield and had more men fall for her during Phillip's absence.

R223 I don’t know about supporting. She was a very major character but Phillip was in so many stories while, once Pam left, they had a harder time writing more for Beth aside from with Rick and Mindy. Her time on GL was very brief the first run. Beth was like GL’s Laura so it would have been interesting to see where they would have taken Beth. Beth C’s was kind of bland her first run. She had moments but she wasn’t nearly as gorgeous as she was in her second run as Beth.
They should have written Phillip off to jail knowing Lujack’s twin was coming on board within a few months.

I’m not sure how long they looked for a replacement to play Beth. I’m sure replacing one of the most popular characters of the 80s was fierce. I thought I heard TPTB weren’t thrilled with Beth C in her initial run. She didn’t quite have the magic Judi gave the role. It’s a shame about Grant’s parents because with Nick coming on soon after they left I cannot imagine what they had in store for Beth seeing Lujack’s twin. Wow

The first was boring Jeff Phillips, who was a snooze at GL and at AW as a recast Matthew. Someone at P&G liked him but he was one of the most boring actors ever, and to cast THAT as Roger's son?
Hart #3 was the nellie flamer.
Hart #4 was Marshall Hilliard who I kind of liked. Looked like Jeff P but had more of a smirky attitude. Think Billy Miller at YR if you haven't seen Marshall's work.
But for whatever reason they reconcieved the role and decided Hart should go from Midwestern farmboy to Kiss Me, Guido with Hart #5, Fonzie Grillo.

PS Leonard is still alive. I believe he still needs assistance and care.
One of the multitudes of actors in the Locher Room mentioned him in 2020. It might have been Jocelyn Seagrave. They mentioned having seen or visiting him within the last year or so. (One assumes, pre COVID.)

I think Marshall was clashing with Wendy Moniz.

In an interview that Genie Francis did with Nancy Reichardt, closer to that time in her life (February 1991), Genie tells a somewhat different story.
She says that she'd just moved to New York and had absolutely no intention of doing another soap. (She mentions her desire to do stage work.) Apparently, "several" soaps there made contact, but "she refused to take their offers seriously" until Agnes called with the role on AMC. She liked the character, because it was different than the "soap sweethearts" she'd played before. It also says she only signed a one-year contract.

I know that Genie is a soap icon and all that, but there is just something about her that seems bitter to me. Maybe she thought Bare Essence was her ticket out of daytime and she's still pissed they cancelled it.

I can see that a little but no where near Tony Geary's bitterness... I still hate that he fought so hard for Luke and Laura to be over because of his ego

in the link at r211, Genie was definitely irritated at the interviewer to the point she even says, you didn't do your research... maybe that is the bitterness the above post was referring to

About half the interviewees for those Academy histories always seem pissy and/or bitter.

The kind of stuff I just hated during That Era of GL.
Vanessa involved with a story like this....ugh. It was just so bad, so cartoonish, about people we didn't care about at ALL.

On the latest Locher Room Paula Garces (Pilar) & Saundra Santiago (Carmen) of Guiding Light were the guests and their co-star Paul Anthony Stewart popped up as a surprise guest (he played brother of Pilar & son of Carmen)
Paula squealed with delight and let be know she tried every trick in the book to get Paul Anthony to take her out on a date. She tried EVERYTHING but nothing worked.
Paul Anthony just blushed, at Paula talking about what a crush she had, and couldn't understand why Paul Anthony wouldn't reciprocate.
But didn't anyone at Guiding Light take her aside and give her the lowdown on Paul Anthony Stewart

Just mentioned Jeff Phillips here the other day and his face popped up on Facebook. This is what he's doing now.

I’ve watched her in everything since GL so will watch her on this one although I’m not particularly fond of medical shows. I thought she was planning on moving to Berlin after starring in that series Berlin Station but maybe Covid scuppered it.

Tina Johnson (Lurlene on Texas) has a small role as a juror on the latest episode of The Good Fight. She looks pretty much like she would forty years later.

R254 I believe she has, indeed, visited the island.
Which is bad and good.
Of course, it's bad because fewer people can visit the island after she's been here.
But she also limits the loud touristy riff raff that might show up here.

I hate touristy riff raff.
Where’s the new thread?
It should have Montega in its title.

R256 It hasn't been created, but I shall, and will mention Montega.
And we can keep this one for a quiet room if discussions of touristy things gets overwhelming in the other thread.
