-calling someone Mary!! (Is it a drama queen?)
"Mary" was a common term of address gay men secretly used with one another in the USA in the 20th century before Stonewall. It's used frequently in "The Boys in the Band," where the DL love of the term stems from.
What it means on DL is, "You're as gay as gay can be--don't even think for a minute you're fooling anyone." It can be used to respond to a poster who is being nelly, who is using over-the-top purple prose, or even someone who is trying to be butch.
-Rose (I assumed this is from Golden Girls' Rose being dim?)
One of the funniest things about "Golden Girls" is that Dorothy Zbornak does not hold to the common belief that there is no such thing as a stupid question.. In almost every episode, Rose asks an inane question with an obvious answer, and Dorothy belittles her for it by answering her sarcastically, and begins it by saying, "No Rose..." or :Yes Rose" and then adding a sarcastic zinger.
-Frau? Is it just any straight woman, or is it more limited to an obnoxious mom, Karen, or the pumpkin spice soy latte, Ugg boots & scarf types?
"Frau" goes back to the idea in the early 20th century that the Germans were convinced that women must be obsessed with "Kinder, Kirche, und Küche": children, church, and cooking. A [italic]hausfrau[/italic] became a contemptuous word used at mid-century to use for housewives who thought their way of living was the be-all and end-all for women. On Datalounge it means an obnoxious married woman who uses her wifely and maternal statuses as a way for glorifying herself. Because so many Dataloungers don't like women, "cubefrau" was a term that was invented to describe entitled women at the office, usually who are into annoying thins men don't do as much like plan elaborate take-out for lunch for the entire office, or organize farewell parties no one else wants to attend or give.
"Karens" usually refers to exceptionally entitled white women (usually Generation Xers) who chew someone out in public or demand to see the manager to report an employee's inadequate behavior. It is especially popular as a term with gay African Americans, and has comne to replace "Miss Ann," a name which used to be used to describe the same phenomenon (or, a black woman who is acting like an entitled white woman, such as in "Dreamgirls" when Marty sings, "You walk, Miss Ann, and I'll call your union!" to one of James Thunder Early's black back-up singers who is quitting her job on the spot.). A "frau" can be passive, but a "Karen" is more actively menacing (which is why Schmed-win, for example, is absolutely terrified by Karens, and why he used to post about them constantly for almost a year.)
