Queen Latifah finally openly comes out

Good for her! Happy Pride!

It was cute to see her dad there in the audience as well.

by Anonymousreply 132July 4, 2021 10:36 PM

Little Dana Owens, happy at last!

by Anonymousreply 1June 28, 2021 6:05 PM

She did it in a smooth way in that it's been an open secret for so long so all she had to do was thank her loves Eboni and Rebel and those who knew, knew who she was referring to.

by Anonymousreply 2June 28, 2021 6:08 PM

Great for her, but I can't imagine a big reaction to this as it was pretty "duh" about 20 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 3June 28, 2021 6:08 PM

No fucking link?

Did she come out? She just said "happy pride" at the bet awards?

by Anonymousreply 9June 28, 2021 6:12 PM

Was it the "Rebel, my love"? Is Rebel her partner?

by Anonymousreply 10June 28, 2021 6:15 PM

Shouldn't have to Google search, for Christ's sake.

by Anonymousreply 11June 28, 2021 6:16 PM

Great link, fucking moron OP.

by Anonymousreply 12June 28, 2021 6:17 PM

Eboni is her wife, Rebel is their son.

by Anonymousreply 13June 28, 2021 6:18 PM

[QUOTE] You can Google if you try hard enough

Why should we have to do the OP’s work? If you’re going to do something, then do it right. Don’t half ass it.

by Anonymousreply 14June 28, 2021 6:19 PM

I thought they were her pit bulls!

No. If you start a thread, you should provide details.

by Anonymousreply 17June 28, 2021 6:22 PM

She came out on her own terms, like Jodie Foster.

by Anonymousreply 18June 28, 2021 6:23 PM

I won't believe it until she starts doing ads for Subaru and Home Depot.

by Anonymousreply 19June 28, 2021 6:24 PM

I love her! She can make the most shit movie watchable - that’s a true star. Happy for her!

by Anonymousreply 21June 28, 2021 6:25 PM

Until she says "I'm gay" in the media she's still fucking around with the entire gay thing. It's a little late in the game so cut the bullshit! Next!

by Anonymousreply 22June 28, 2021 6:25 PM

I love her and she looked fantastic last night. When she got teary eyed, so did I!

by Anonymousreply 25June 28, 2021 6:28 PM

I'm the OP. I tried sharing the link to the article and video, but apparently DL doesn't like that site, so I couldn't post it. Sorry.

by Anonymousreply 26June 28, 2021 6:28 PM

Thank you for the explanation, OP. Let us move on: Will Latifah return to playing Prides?

by Anonymousreply 27June 28, 2021 6:31 PM

She's very likable playing certain types of roles.

She was in a movie with LL Cool J called Last Holiday that was sappy, but very likable.

by Anonymousreply 28June 28, 2021 6:31 PM

R28- I got sucked into that movie when it happened to be playing on my background noise tv- it’s a fun feel good movie.

by Anonymousreply 29June 28, 2021 6:34 PM

Has Jada Pinkett-Smith issued a comment yet?

by Anonymousreply 30June 28, 2021 6:41 PM

I'm so happy for her. We knew, Queen -- but good for you for finally acknowledging it.

by Anonymousreply 31June 28, 2021 6:42 PM

I was at a press event for her short-lived 2.0 talk show.

She said she wouldn't ever ask anything that made anyone uncomfortable.

I didn't have the balls to say: "You mean like you don't like being asked if you're, you know.....gay?"

by Anonymousreply 32June 28, 2021 6:44 PM

[quote] I was at a press event for her short-lived 2.0 talk show. She said she wouldn't ever ask anything that made anyone uncomfortable.

And yet somehow, mysteriously, her talk show failed.

by Anonymousreply 33June 28, 2021 6:46 PM

Does she have to actually say "I'm gay" to get credit for coming out? Publicly thanking her wife and their child isn't enough?

by Anonymousreply 34June 28, 2021 6:46 PM

Lazy whore OP, don't start threads without a link. Whore.

by Anonymousreply 35June 28, 2021 6:50 PM

It's nobody's business but her own how she comes out. Yet, thanking people who most people would not know is not exactly brave, IMO. The average person (e.g. me) would have no idea who Eboni and Rebel were to her. They could just as easily been her pugs.

In comparison, producer John Glines openly thanked his stated husband/partner during a live broadcast of the Tonys almost 40 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 36June 28, 2021 6:51 PM

If she doesn't want to identify as gay, that's her choice. But she should never have played a Pride festival if she doesn't support the ethos.

by Anonymousreply 37June 28, 2021 6:51 PM

[Quote] Publicly thanking her wife

Did she say "my wife?" I guess I missed it.

by Anonymousreply 38June 28, 2021 6:52 PM

Everyone who knows about her knew that she is a Lesbo.

by Anonymousreply 39June 28, 2021 6:57 PM

The AA community in general are not the friendliest to the Gay community. There is history to back that up. So YES it does matter for to her to say "I'm gay and my wife." It's just one more face on our side to say "we are here" in the AA community. That's why.

by Anonymousreply 40June 28, 2021 6:58 PM

It was a brave, bold statement of unity with the people she identifies with, whoever they may be.

by Anonymousreply 41June 28, 2021 6:59 PM

She inched her way out a bit more. Nothing spectacular here.

by Anonymousreply 42June 28, 2021 7:06 PM

Who cares. Yes, she’s black and a woman, but she’s not a black TRANSwoman, so is this really something to celebrate?

by Anonymousreply 43June 28, 2021 7:11 PM

Something white people and gay white people in particular don't seem to understand. (I'm black by the way) is that gay black people for the most part identify as black and with the black community first before anything else. We own our blackness our culture and our history and love our people, regardless of how dysfunctional we can be at times as a people. When the shit hits the fan, we're there supporting each other.

So I don't quite understand why white people feel that gay black people have to highlight gayness first and foremost before what we know people will see us as first, which is Black!

Gay black people are not like white people, where you're so privileged, that to be different you almost consider being gay a race or ethnicity in it's self. That's not the case for most black gay people, we are black first and being gay comes somewhere else down the line. Besides, black people are not generally excepted in the mainstream LGBTQ community. And that's been a huge problem for decades. When I see the mainstream LGBTQ community, I largely think of over privileged well heeled gay white people who are being catered to, not none whites etc.

So Queen Latifah not saying I'm gay, is not something she has to say. She's gay and it just is what it is. Why explain what's already well documented and understood is the consensus I get. And there's nothing wrong with that.

by Anonymousreply 44June 28, 2021 7:27 PM

We can see she's black. She can't pass as anything else. There's the difference.

by Anonymousreply 45June 28, 2021 7:33 PM

You’re as black as I am R44.

by Anonymousreply 46June 28, 2021 7:33 PM

[Quote] Why explain what's already well documented

What's understood doesn't need to be explained.

by Anonymousreply 47June 28, 2021 7:34 PM

in other news... lifetime achievement award for what?

by Anonymousreply 48June 28, 2021 7:35 PM

It's only straight black people who try to make gay black people choose between their sexuality and their race. Of course, the white man's religion is at the root of it.

by Anonymousreply 49June 28, 2021 7:35 PM

I hate these sort of cryptic coming-outs. Is it so fucking difficult to say: "I'm a dyke, and not the kind that's built to hold back the water"?!

by Anonymousreply 50June 28, 2021 7:39 PM

The speech was wonderful. I appreciated every word she didn't say.

by Anonymousreply 51June 28, 2021 7:39 PM

r44 has said nothing. Blah blah blah.

by Anonymousreply 52June 28, 2021 7:40 PM

I don't know, r52...tl:dr

by Anonymousreply 53June 28, 2021 7:43 PM

[quote] Besides, black people are not generally excepted in the mainstream LGBTQ community.

You got your goddamn stripes on the new flag, what more do you want?!

by Anonymousreply 54June 28, 2021 7:48 PM

It took her goddamn long enough--and she still didn't come out. Yes, she has to say she's gay. She must say the word; otherwise, it's "move along, nothing to see here."

She called the person she's been with all these years "her partner." Please. Say who she is. Once again, Queen Latifah won't say the word. Yeah sure, everyone comes on on their own terms, but for christssakes, how long is it going to take someone of her stature?

She wished everyone "Happy Pride." Anyone could have done that. Get with it, Queen Latifah. Come out. Say it loud and proud. Stop dancing around the issue. It's time.

by Anonymousreply 55June 28, 2021 8:15 PM

I will give Latifah credit for actually posing with her ladies on red carpets and kissing them in public.

by Anonymousreply 56June 28, 2021 8:21 PM

I'm surprised she finally said it out loud.

by Anonymousreply 57June 28, 2021 8:28 PM

Oh please R44 . How old are you ? In the 70s and 80s black people were very much a part of the gay culture. They went to the same bars ,hung out with the same queens, fucked just like everybody else. It wasnt until the Black Suffrage movement that there was a divide between white and black gay people . After 40 years of hearing how oppressed they are,of course theres a divide now. But heres a hint honey,it aint the white queens who feel that way . Theres an old saying "watch what you wish for,you just may get it" .well, you all wanted to be seperate from gay culture, you got it. Dont cry now.

by Anonymousreply 58June 28, 2021 8:29 PM

No, apps have changed how gay men of different hues interact. That's a real thing.

by Anonymousreply 59June 28, 2021 8:31 PM

R44 here, I don't give a shit about pride month. I said recently I'm not a gay pride flag waving gay, it's just not my style. And I'm not attracted to fem guys, it's a turn off. I'm gay and I always attract the type of men who would never be caught dead with a fem guy.

I'm just not the flamboyant type. And I hate gay bars and pride parades etc. Gay people are not a monolith.

by Anonymousreply 67June 28, 2021 8:58 PM

by Anonymousreply 68June 28, 2021 9:01 PM

by Anonymousreply 69June 28, 2021 9:03 PM

Queen Latifah still has no courage when it come to being a lesbian. She did not come out. After all these years, she still stayed silent. Latifah wished everyone "Happy Pride" in the last second of her speech. That it not coming out. Any can say "Happy Pride." And then referring to her "partner?" Please, bitch.

by Anonymousreply 70June 28, 2021 9:08 PM

This reminds me of Jodie Foster's momentous Golden Globe speech, where she came out..... but not really.

by Anonymousreply 71June 28, 2021 9:19 PM

R44, I’m bisexual and black; I didn’t know that, at all. I ran to my partner when I figured out why I kept checking out women. I’m black and from the Caribbean; my parents passed away Jan and last July. I am college educated and have been in my profession for 30 years. I introduced her to my parents and kept moving forward; I will never forget the following Saturday they came to my house and told me they loved me, no matter what. I didn’t ask for acceptance, I told them I was bisexual and this is my partner; how they chose to deal with it, was their problem.

Real brave, Dana.

[quote]Not to get side tracked, but MC Lyte looked exquisite. Good for her too.

I noticed that too! She looked incredible. Every year she's behind the scenes doing the voiceovers and she's looking like that. She needs to come back and reclaim the stage and show she still got it.

by Anonymousreply 79June 28, 2021 9:46 PM

It only took her 25 fucking years.

by Anonymousreply 80June 28, 2021 9:50 PM

[quote] Her career is over as far as the mainstream is concerned...

Actually that's not true, and that may be one of the issues here. Her new CBS show is supposedly crappy (see the reviews) but a hit as far as new series introduced this year. And her demo for that show sure ain't DL.

by Anonymousreply 94June 28, 2021 11:54 PM

I don't think "Happy Pride" is all that veiled. How often does a celebrity say that on national television?

People forget back in the late 80s and early 90s, Latifah (along with Salt N Pepa and MC Lyte) was one of the only 3 or so widely respected female rap acts. And she had to be great, not mediocre, for the industry to accept her.

Latifah does a crapton of voice overs for commercials, so I don't think she's hurting. R99 her ‘90s material still gives me chills. Amazingly deep and heavy sound, killer flow, ahead of her time.

Whatever you think about how she has handled her personal life and coming-out (as a lesbian myself, I have mixed feelings), when it comes to her lyrical and musical talent she should have been an even bigger deal than she was.

Being that she is a black gay woman of a certain age in our crapsack bigoted world, it’s hard to criticise her for being a sellout, doing tv and movies and cheesy cameos on shitty pop songs. At least she got paid.

But then, on the other hand, remembering how cool and cutting edge she was 25 years ago, it’s sad thinking that most people now know her for playing Motormouth in the HAIRSPRAY remake.
