Richie Jackson says "openly gay" is an offensive term and we should only use "out" instead

agree or disagree?

he says "openly" implies not as shameful as warranted. Honestly I've never thought about the 2 terms as different before.

How terribly homophobic. I look forward to next year’s midterms. Goodbye.

by Anonymousreply 2June 27, 2021 11:35 PM

Go with a classic. "Avowed Homosexual" is my preferred appellation.

by Anonymousreply 3June 27, 2021 11:36 PM

We are a LADY!

by Anonymousreply 4June 27, 2021 11:39 PM

Nope. Gay is forever.

Shut the fuck up, homophobes.

by Anonymousreply 5June 27, 2021 11:42 PM

If I'm being honest: while I don't argue that it accurately describes some people, I never liked the phrase "openly gay" either. But I've never been closeted. So perhaps that's the reason I find it cringeworthy.

by Anonymousreply 6June 27, 2021 11:43 PM

He seems far-left to me. So no thanks. “I’m gay”. “I’m openly gay”, “I’m out”—stop policing gay men!!

by Anonymousreply 7June 27, 2021 11:45 PM

For this we beat Hitler? Talk about a pyrrhic victory!

by Anonymousreply 8June 27, 2021 11:46 PM

It’s hard take anything serious from a grown person who goes by Richie, so I’m just going to ignore this.

by Anonymousreply 9June 27, 2021 11:47 PM

"Straight" is an offensive term to describe any non-gay sexuality.

by Anonymousreply 10June 27, 2021 11:49 PM

Richie Jackson has too much time on theys hands.

by Anonymousreply 11June 27, 2021 11:49 PM

I prefer “avid pianist”

by Anonymousreply 12June 27, 2021 11:50 PM

It’s fascinating how “openly gay” is offensive yet “queer” is all over his twitter. I guess he’d need to explain that rationale to gay men who were beaten to death and the last thing they heard was “you queer!”, not “you openly gay!”. But, meh. He’s woke and I don’t listen to the woke. They are all just noise.

by Anonymousreply 13June 27, 2021 11:51 PM

Then maybe we should start doing the same to breeders.

by Anonymousreply 14June 27, 2021 11:53 PM

I prefer Senator.

by Anonymousreply 15June 27, 2021 11:57 PM

I think it's become clear that too many people have the ability to share their opinions in this world in too many ways.

Very few opinions are worth hearing.

Very few people are worth hearing.

Very few people, in fact, is what I long for.

by Anonymousreply 16June 27, 2021 11:58 PM
He’s woke and I don’t listen to the woke. They are all just noise.

Oh, my! THAT was broadly stated.

by Anonymousreply 17June 27, 2021 11:58 PM

Is this the one formerly known as Blanket?

by Anonymousreply 18June 27, 2021 11:59 PM

He's right. Its super lowkey and often not intended to be offensive at all, but its one of the terms that can be, that can't really be reclaimed either. Again though, its SUPER lowkey offensive and you often wouldn't be able to detect it.

The words together are not offensive. But its a very correct that when its branded onto us, constantly, it leans towards insinuating that those who think it is shameful, have something of a point. 'Openly gay' isn't the words said in hushed whispers or such, but its giving the homophobic sector of society an implicit sway. He's correct that if we MUST use ANY word, its a better idea to use 'out' - a word decidedly not associated with public shame but gay power.

R13 Doesn't understand the social power dynamics. Queer definitely is an offensive word, and to this day these 'woke' people you complain about would often shun people who use it with scorn. Its also a claimed word that queer people decide to reinvent its purpose into something of celebration. Much of it started amongst gay people: we're here, we're queer, get used to it. Its not as generic as 'openly' and 'out' and it'll be used to target us so we may as well make it our sigil. Its not a lot different from women embracing their 'bitch' and black people augmenting the n word to 'nigga' for THEIR use. We know people want to use it poorly against us, so we make it a blessing that they're flummoxed others won't join in on bashing us with. It is working. More are out than ever, and more are accepting than ever, generationally, and queer is not dirty to so many youth including and especially straight youth. Its all in different ways (be careful about bitch, and do not say the nword), but its all about reclaiming power. Its an offensive word now TO bigots. Queer Studies scares the shit out of them.

by Anonymousreply 19June 27, 2021 11:59 PM

R19 is a low-key homophobe. Word salads defending oligarchic bullshit about "generational shifts" to defend the normalization of hate speech are the signs of a low-key homophobe.

by Anonymousreply 20June 28, 2021 12:02 AM

Loosen your fichu, R20. R19's post is almost entirely readable and makes perfect sense.

(Sigil? Really? That's obviously not going to be widely understood.)

by Anonymousreply 21June 28, 2021 12:07 AM

I agree R13.

by Anonymousreply 22June 28, 2021 12:08 AM

Oh jesus fucking christ. 'openly gay' vs 'out' ... basically the same damn thing. Use whichever you prefer or feels right to you...but to brand 'openly gay' as something truly offensive? That is the sign of someone with WAY too much time on their hands.

by Anonymousreply 23June 28, 2021 12:08 AM

R16, I'd say marry me but I respect you too much.

by Anonymousreply 24June 28, 2021 12:08 AM

Anyone who calls the word "gay" offensive will be canceled.

This homophobic motherfucker needs to lose his job pronto.

by Anonymousreply 25June 28, 2021 12:09 AM

We need more shame!

by Anonymousreply 26June 28, 2021 12:11 AM

Idiots need to stop policing everyone's language and get real jobs instead, like a garbage man or shoe salesman.

by Anonymousreply 27June 28, 2021 12:11 AM

The headline is definitely questionable, R25. They knew what they were doing with that headline and they know people don’t read.

by Anonymousreply 28June 28, 2021 12:11 AM

I wish I could get a job with the Language Police, R27.

by Anonymousreply 29June 28, 2021 12:12 AM

From now on the acceptable term will be ”wardrobe” and not “closet” so we aren’t shunning are clothes holding furniture as well.

by Anonymousreply 30June 28, 2021 12:23 AM

R29 No you don’t, the benefits blow, vacation is limited and no pension.

by Anonymousreply 31June 28, 2021 12:24 AM

The opposite of straight is crooked. Therefore, calling heterosexual people straight is homophobic. From this point on, "straight" people will now be called "non-gays". If it's good enough for the T, right?

by Anonymousreply 32June 28, 2021 12:29 AM

Sorta' right .... we don't say openly a drinker,

by Anonymousreply 33June 28, 2021 12:30 AM

Actually I can't think of a better word than "openly". Maybe "candidly" gay?

by Anonymousreply 34June 28, 2021 12:32 AM

How about FABulously gay?

by Anonymousreply 35June 28, 2021 12:34 AM

by Anonymousreply 37June 28, 2021 12:37 AM

"Gay" is a shitty term to use. It's nearly meaningless when applied to homosexual men and women.

At 64 years of age, I will remember when this 'community' was struggling decades ago to find a post-Stonewall word that would be generally acceptable. 'Homosexual' being too clinical. 'Queer' being, at the time, as yet unreclaimed. And on and on. There was a lot of discussion and debate before "Gay" finally won out. I never liked it, but I adopted it because I had no choice. That's the word the community finally seemed to settle on. I feel it far too lightweight. It has no stature, no substance, no gravitas, and we deserve better than a word that, in my opinion, is just only a small step better than "pansy" or "limp-wristed." As usual, it was the assimilationists that wanted a 'respectable' word to name our community. Middle class morality is a powerful thing. But not always in a good way.

When "Queer" began to be reclaimed, I embraced it. "Gay" has a diminutive quality that is just embarrassing.

by Anonymousreply 38June 28, 2021 12:52 AM

Does he mean "out gay" is ok? Or is both the "openly" and the "gay" part "offensive".

by Anonymousreply 39June 28, 2021 12:52 AM

R38, you're a homophobe. The q-word is a slur. It means abnormal and disordered. It will never not be hate speech.

by Anonymousreply 40June 28, 2021 12:53 AM

This is also the network that employs Joy Reid.

by Anonymousreply 41June 28, 2021 12:53 AM
When "Queer" began to be reclaimed, I embraced it. "Gay" has a diminutive quality that is just embarrassing.

Queer means weird. It's a negative word.

You think happy is worse than weird?

How does that even make sense?

by Anonymousreply 42June 28, 2021 12:54 AM

Calling gay people the q-word is incitement to violence.

by Anonymousreply 43June 28, 2021 12:55 AM

I prefer "ylnepo yag".

by Anonymousreply 44June 28, 2021 1:01 AM

People who prefers "Queer" over "Gay" are ideological loons tranny defenders.

by Anonymousreply 45June 28, 2021 1:02 AM

I've seen more rational and civilized behavior from Warner Bros. cartoon characters, R45.

by Anonymousreply 46June 28, 2021 1:04 AM

From Merriam-Webster, defining the word "queer": differing in some way from what is usual or normal

Perfect. Better than Gay.

by Anonymousreply 47June 28, 2021 1:10 AM

Nope, that still means "abnormal." It's a slur, and you're a homophobe if you defend it. Fail, fail, FAIL!

Queer:

Noun
strange or odd from a conventional viewpoint; unusually different; singular:
of a questionable nature or character

Verb
to spoil; ruin

Yeah. Perfect. If you're a fucking asshole.

by Anonymousreply 53June 28, 2021 2:06 AM

Does anyone remember "Doing time on maple drive" that made for tv movie about the family and there was a gay character? It came out when gay wasn't that common on network tv so of course I watched it.

The son comes out as gay and the dad gives him this patronizing speech where he says "I don't like the word gay. It's a good word that has been used for something it isn't. You're a homosexual" or something along those lines.

That always stuck with me, and I think of it whenever anyone says they don't like the word "gay".

by Anonymousreply 54June 28, 2021 2:41 AM

Don’t fucking tell me how to describe myself.

by Anonymousreply 55June 28, 2021 2:45 AM

He was a rotten basketball player.

by Anonymousreply 60June 28, 2021 4:57 AM

Openly gay is a stupid term but it isn't offensive. It's really weird when phrases like "first openly gay Senator" is used; yeah there was probably a bunch of closeted homosexuals over the course of U.S. history but if they didn't identify with the community can we really call them gay? I doubt Lindsey Graham thinks of himself as gay.

Queer is supremely stupid, especially when used to refer to Lesbian and Gay people as a whole. Some people are comfortable with the word but a lot are not, it should not be applied to someone unless they want it to be.

by Anonymousreply 61June 28, 2021 5:10 AM

"Openly gay" is only offensive to closet queens.

by Anonymousreply 62June 28, 2021 5:46 AM

Open is a synonym for “out”.

I think these sorts of things are just a product of twitter giving everyone with an opinion a platform, and the media sucking it up because it’s clickbate.

by Anonymousreply 63June 28, 2021 1:16 PM

At one time queer and faggot were very powerful words…they were used to hurt and instill shame…they were co-opted into Gay vernacular to rob them of their power…so that when homophobe straights used them against us….those words just didn’t hurt anymore.

by Anonymousreply 64June 28, 2021 1:29 PM

Those words are still hurtful today, R64. They will always be slurs. Anyone not offended by them is self-hating. They are incitement to violence.

by Anonymousreply 65June 28, 2021 1:30 PM

Throw this, “queer”, “non-binary”, “LGBTQ+++”, the “progressive” Pride flag, and “furries” into the woke noise bucket.

by Anonymousreply 66June 28, 2021 1:41 PM

Oh and “trans”.

by Anonymousreply 67June 28, 2021 1:42 PM

I'm on R32's side. Hell, I was on R32's side before R32 was!

by Anonymousreply 68June 28, 2021 1:43 PM

Sure, fine. Let's all be EXHAUSTED together.

by Anonymousreply 69June 28, 2021 1:45 PM

At least she said that [italic]Golden Girls[/italic] episode pulled for blackface wasn't blackface, R69.

by Anonymousreply 70June 28, 2021 1:47 PM

I don’t know about y’all, but I’m just a person. It’s not like I say, “oh, Bob and Mary - they’re my openly straight neighbors. I’m not saying that declaring someone is “openly gay” is offensive. It’s just not necessary.

by Anonymousreply 71June 28, 2021 1:55 PM

Absolutely ridiculous.

Oh, was that OFFENSIVE?

by Anonymousreply 72June 28, 2021 2:25 PM

R64 they are still offensive. And yes people can claim they are "reclaiming" them but they don't speak for all of us, and they use them as perjoratives (like on Twitter, the f-slur is still used as a slur) so I think there is some internalized homophobia inherent in people who use them today.

And "queer" is offensive AND meaningless because it's been applied to everyone in the word salad so it can even mean straight people!

by Anonymousreply 73June 28, 2021 3:44 PM

R71 I'm offended by gays who use "y'all".

by Anonymousreply 74June 28, 2021 3:45 PM

I’m offended by the offended…

by Anonymousreply 75June 28, 2021 3:46 PM

I'm offended by cocks that are smaller than 7"

by Anonymousreply 76June 28, 2021 3:50 PM

"Openly gay" honors and enables the closet. This guy is "openly gay" so we can talk about him. But the other non-openly gay men who we all know about... we can't talk about them. We sure as hell can't write about them in the media.

At this point in history, hiding in the closet like Lindsey Graham is offensive. So is the term "openly gay."

by Anonymousreply 77June 28, 2021 5:28 PM

I prefer "fag".

by Anonymousreply 78June 28, 2021 5:31 PM

I prefer the more direct route...I like the cock!

by Anonymousreply 79June 28, 2021 5:41 PM

According to Luke Sissyfag the only way we can overcome is when we learn not to fear word and each of us is delighted in who and what we are. Then the foolishness of our century will have had us giving apology where no offense was given.

by Anonymousreply 83June 28, 2021 6:07 PM

"trans" will be declared offensive eventually, too.

by Anonymousreply 84June 28, 2021 9:17 PM

I have already declared everything other than homosexuality offensive and will continue declaring it so.

by Anonymousreply 85June 28, 2021 9:21 PM

by Anonymousreply 86June 28, 2021 9:40 PM

Not cool, dog. Not cool.

by Anonymousreply 87June 28, 2021 10:53 PM

He is wrong about why we use X was the first openly gay person to do Y. We need to qualify that so-and-so was the first openly gay Oscar winner, because they likely weren’t the first gay Oscar winner, but rather the first to be out of the closet at the time of winning.

If someone comes out 20 years after winning their Oscar, that’s an important detail.
