Merchant Ivory Productions

Let's talk about it. They made some charming period dramas.

A Soldier's Daughter Never Cries with LeeLee Sobieski, Kris Kristofferson, Barbara Hershey, and Jesse Bradford. Amazing movie.

Beautiful films with an emptiness. Missing something

A Room with a View is one of my all-time favorite films. I never get tired of watching it.

by Anonymousreply 3June 16, 2021 1:53 AM

I stayed awake through and really liked "Mr. and Mrs. Bridge" and "The Remains of the Day", and, like others on the thread, enjoyed "A Room with a View".

One of their earliest movies, "Shakespeare Wallah", is pretty interesting too, and "Maurice" isn't perfect, but I didn't find it dull.

Maurice, The Remains of the Day and Mr. and Mrs. Bridge are good films and sometimes you have to be in the right frame of mind to appreciate.

The Remains of the Day is low key, heart rending and in its own quiet way shattering.

I watched it on HBO a few years back and was quite surprised at how good it was and I saw Maurice and Mr. and Mrs. Bridge in theaters at the time of their release and liked both of them.

Does a “Room with a View” have the song “A View to a Kill”?

I will always love my favorite naked twink Rupert Graves.

Rupert will send us a photo with his signature if we send a self-addressed envelope to his agent--

Only two of the listed movies have buttocks.

And only one has penises.

by Anonymousreply 9June 16, 2021 2:30 AM

R9, incorrect. There was peen in both A Room with a View and Maurice.

by Anonymousreply 10June 16, 2021 2:32 AM

No other penises amongst all those teacups and chintz curtains?

by Anonymousreply 11June 16, 2021 2:37 AM

So Merchant is dead. Is Ivory dead or is he merely uninsurable?

by Anonymousreply 12June 16, 2021 2:39 AM

Movies I thought might have been Merchant-Ivory films but weren’t: A Passage to India, The Wings of the Dove.

by Anonymousreply 13June 16, 2021 2:40 AM

R12 Ivory is alive and (seemingly) well. He wrote Call Me by Your Name's screenplay.

James was pissed Timmy and Armie refused to show dong.

by Anonymousreply 15June 16, 2021 2:42 AM

I liked their 1991 film adaptation of The Ballad of the Sad Cafe, which starred Vanessa Redgrave and Keith Carradine, of all people. It seems few people have seen it.

by Anonymousreply 16June 16, 2021 2:50 AM

R13 Enchanted April and Where Angels Fear to Tread also are similar to their style.

by Anonymousreply 17June 16, 2021 3:45 AM

[quote] James was pissed Timmy and Armie refused to show dong.

I'm sure Ivory wouldn't express it in such crude terms.
