But also: I just don't get it. At all. And I say this as a slightly femme gay man who teaches gender theory and who firmly believes that gender is a social construct and that it is not the same thing as biological sex. But I don't feel 'manly'. I honestly don't know what 'feeling like a man' means, or how one might 'feel like a woman' either. I'm aware of the many ways in which I don't adhere to conventional tropes of masculinity, but I consider myself still male. I self-identify as male, because I guess that's how I appear to the world, and I'm untroubled by how others might or might not perceive me and/or my gender.

And at the risk of sounding disingenuous, I wonder if the difference between myself and those who identify as non-binary is the simple fact that I'm not a narcissist.

I have been having the same self-reflection as you. I have male parts, identify as male (not because I feel forced to), and enjoy my gay lifestyle. I am what some could call feminine, but I've been called masculine at times too. I don't care what others interpret, that's on them. I never understood the need to 'shun labels' while at the same time creating new watered down labels. Labels are labels.

I really don't get why people need to announce these things, and it irritates me when people put their pronouns on their LinkedIn profile these days. It all screams like an attention grab.

Why can't people just embrace the gender they are born with, and also accept that their own version of that gender could very much be non-conforming in its own right, by just being themselves? Why the need for surgery or for making everyone else change how they refer to you, other than as an attention grab?

If you embrace your 'otherness' or non-conformity so much, why the need to make the world change, or to change body parts to present the other gender? Why can't a 'femme' man just be that? Why do they need to have a surgery to underline their femininity and identify as woman?

Why is it that 'God messed up' and 'I'm a woman trapped in a man's body'? Why isn't it that you are a man, but just have qualities that you yourself (and society) have labeled with the other gender, and that this is just a new way to interpret masculinity? Why change your body or change the world to fit the exploration you need?

Why not just accept the qualities you have as they are, biological and emotional?
