Interestingly, as I wrote that and thought about this thread, it occurred to me the issue of pronouns has become conflated with the issue of transgender people/rights. Of course, there is some significant overlap on the Venn diagram. But the question of pronouns transcends trans issues.

It's almost as if ... hmmm. In some ways, the traditional conception of "transgender" implied a fixed, stable identity. And that identity was so strong that it impelled one to live as the other gender, to transition completely. The current trans ethos embraces the opposite. Identity is fluid, mutable, subject to changing whims and moods. One day, "they/them," the next "she/her."

With all that said, DL is not the place to have a nuanced discussion of the topic.

It's not possible to change your biological sex and I'll never go along with that idea regardless of what trans activists have to say about it. You are either male, female, or (in rare cases) intersex and it's your chromosomes, not your feelings, that determine that. But sex and gender are not the same thing, and I do not think there's any science to follow that says your gender identity is determined at birth or by any particular physical/biological characteristic, or that it MUST be the gender that typically matches your bio sex. So, sure, trans women are women. They just happen to be women who inhabit male bodies. And, yeah, if you interact with a male person who is obviously presenting (however unsuccessfully) as a woman, it's rude and provocative to refer to her using male pronouns/terminology (though admittedly, it is unclear that that actually happened in this particular case and that reaction was over the top even if it did).

Not all trans people are, of course. But within any population demographic, the "pissed off and violently angry" are going to attract a lot more attention than the calm and normal, especially when someone is trying to demonstrate that there's something terribly wrong with that demographic.

Why are there always 4-5 M2F trans people in the gay dating apps? If they are legit women, and want to be considered so, don’t they belong on Bumble or Tinder? I've had two friends "transition" and both were reliably nutty narcissists already. Both got into prostitution and low companions. It is incredibly sad to watch them be encouraged in any way.

I feel like gender minorities should focus primarily on self acceptance rather than societal acceptance. Of course it’s a good thing to help move society along by investing in trans awareness and things like that, but allowing your physical and emotional well being to be so dependent on widespread societal acceptance just leads to crazy extremes and embarrassing public spectacles like the one in the video—ones that reinforce bigoted stereotypes.
