"Mare?" Why didn't they cast Sarah Jessica Parker?

OK, some recaps cleared up for me that Mare’s grandson is not the son of her daughter, which was unclear or introduced in a blink and you miss it bit of dialogue. I was wondering why all these 13 year old girls were knocked up in this town. I guess she has a missing son, but then the kid must also have a missing mother as well to be living with his grandma.

It sounds depressing. Not sure I need more depression in my life.

R4 Some comparisons that drew me in were it’s similarities to Top of the Lake and True Detective (which I only saw the first season) which I found impressive and I’m not one to usually watch police procedurals and were drawn to them as I am to this. There is also something of Prime Suspect about it as well.

I'll pass. I can't stand Evan Peters and whilst a like the other actors involved its not enough to make up for Peters.

Peters doesn’t show up in the first episode, so I don’t yet have any idea of his performance. It’s just going to be nice to see him outside a Ryan Murphy production and see what he might actually have concerning acting chops.

I thought it was good. Well acted and directed. I also did not get why she has a grandkid without parents. Kate Winslet looks like a hard heavy woman in her 50’s which is good for this character.

I loved Happy Valley.

Happy Valley was a brilliant show. If you haven't seen it, please check it out. It's a police drama but there's a lot of humor in it too and very poignant family dynamics. Sarah Lancashire and Siobahn Finneran were absolutely wonderful.

Haven't seen the NYT review but it's averaging 81% on Metacritic. It has a kind of British/European bleakness to it you don't often see in American dramas. I've seen it compared to Broadchurch, Happy Valley and The Killing.

I enjoyed it. I like Evan Peters so I look forward to his character's introduction.

Not to mention in a murder mystery you’ve got to plug in a lot of potential murders and red herrings before the death. Also, they did save the Evan Peters reveal for episode two.

I think the point of the grandson being constantly mentioned is so that as each family member is introduced, you become keenly aware of the fact that there is no one there who is the parent of the grandson. And Mare's an unrelenting cunt through most of the episode, complaining to a woman with cancer and a missing daughter how she doesn't appreciate the passive aggressive use of a news team to get the local police to actually do something about it. Obviously she's a joyless bitch who has a tragedy in her past. I am sure she will tell us all about the tragedy of her son at some point while in bed with her new lover.

I lived in Central PA for a bit and it was the worst five years of my life. They definitely got the dreariness down perfectly. I could tell it was PA before I even read a review. Strangely, while the NYT may have panned it, The Guardian and a few other UK papers were breathless over it and Winslet's performance.

All that being said, I kind of liked this first ep and will tune in for more.

Loved the first episode. I'm an unrepentant Anglophile and this series evokes the best of the British shows like Happy Valley, Unforgotten, etc. in which you meet a lot of characters and have to wait to see how they're all related to each other. Great writing and direction and beautifully cast.

Oh, and the women look like real people (Nicola Walker!), so I liked seeing Kate and the wonderful Julianne Nicholson (Mrs. Jonathan Cake in real life) and Jean Smart without plastic surgery and gobs of makeup.

Unforgotten is also a great show.

The shows creator is from Chester County r85, and this show was filmed in Downingtown and Coatesville and other locations in Chester County.

Actually, the Brit show it most resembles is BROADCHURCH. Lots of suspects and subplots in a small town and, I have a feeling, by the time the murderer is discovered, it doesn't really matter. It's not really a whodunnit in that respect.

I’m thinking this is supposed to be Delco too. Which is why using Easttown is just totally wrong - even as a pseudonym Easttown is a wealthy semi-Main Line area that includes parts of Wayne. The Easttown schools district (Tredyffrin-Easttown) are top notch and the people generally well educated.

The accent is Delco. The setting is more like Bradley Cooper in Silver Lings Playbook - Havertown I think. Or Upper Darby/Glenolden/Clifton Heights (Tina Fey SNL skit)

Why the Rolling Rock? I’m kind of thinking she has to be one of the better educated people in this town to be a detective. Maybe she went to school in Western PA and picked up a proclivity for it there, and in her own little way that makes her feel different and slightly escapist in that town where she is so weighed down by everything else? Who knew PA was so high up on the craft beer states?

I can't be believe we have a poster trying to argue that the show "Mare of Easttown", is not supposed to be set in Easttown. But instead is set in Delaware County somewhere.

Drexel Hill makes sense - and Aston. I wish he had used that name. Delco is getting a lot of attention lately. Perhaps one of the few areas left in the metropolitan US that has remained provincial and inbred enough to retain its unique culture and accent.

I think Julianne Nicholson is wearing a purposefully unflattering and dated wig in the series. There was a little featurette after the first episode on "The making of..." that interviewed her and she looks much cuter with a short pixieish hairdo. Don't know about her lips....they look unchanged to me from her younger days.

I think the show kind of does a good job with having Kate Winselt, Julianne Nicholson, and the character with cancer look like frumpy small town fraus who pretty much know they peaked in high school. I"m guessing there was drama between Mare and the cancer mom back in high school and the disappearance of the cancer mom's daughter only added to it.

When she's screwing things up with the new guy, I keep wanting to tell her, but that's Guy Pearce, woman. Straighten up.

I had a HS reunion a couple of years ago and wow if this isn't true! There were several people who looked so much different and older I was shocked, as we were in our thirties at the time. Crazy how some people's looks can change when they're still relatively young.

It shows quite how depressed people (socially and psychologically) can’t be bothered to groom beyond showering and how that bit of energy sapped out of them fucks their whole aesthetic - home furnishings, clothing hair. Some of it almost veers to poverty porn, though. The scene of Jean Smart mindlessly playing her iPad game was a bit not the nose. Likewise the dead girl microwaving Mac and Cheese for her father. The perceived respect of adding a 2 minutes more food prep time to a 90 second nuked meal means everything to men like that.

Jack Mulhern, who plays the supposed teen baby daddy of the victim's son, played a gay character in the Netflix teen mystery drama The Society. Sadly it was canceled after one season.

Evan Peters looks more handsome than I expected.

I was impressed with Peters as well, he’s aged nicely and I like the setup of him being the Yang to her Yang and being cooler prevailing head and knowing to use humor to deflect her tension.

I go off into the deep end and guess it was the mother of the teen who went missing the year before in order to get the police fired up finding her daughter or whatever happened to her.

The guy played by Guy Pearce would be way too obvious (with him claiming to have moved only nine months ago, to give himself an alibi for not being around when the girl went missing the year before). Him playing cat and mouse with the local investigator would be way too on the nose.

According to internet, Mare's ex-husband (played by Pam's dumb BF from the Office) is "Mark" Shaheen. I assumed "Frank Shaheen", the putative baby-daddy, was the dead by suicide autistic son. I am wrong?

I think the Guy Pearce character is doing some downlow research for his new book. He likely knew who Mare was when they met (in town for nine months and doesn't know the local legend?).

I'm liking the theories here, but I have my eye on the Deacon Mark. It seemed kind of strange the way Mare's cousin was trying to suss out just how well he knew Erin. I think there is more to that story. Maybe after she got pregnant by Mare's ex, she confessed it to the priest. It seems like they are definitely heading towards Erin's murderer being tied to the woman's missing daughter, who was more than likely the first victim.

I wonder if the victim called Mare's daughter a homophobic slur when they walked away from the mob and that's why the daughter let go and left the victim on her own? She doesn't seem to be happy with her recent girlfriend.

I don't get the catfishing plot. Why accuse the victim of still trying to get it on with her ex when she was willing to meet a new guy she met online (which turns out to be a fake created by the crazy current girlfriend of her ex)?

The victim's name is Erin btw. Cailee Spaeny has a pretty impressive list of previous projects for her age.

I think the baby daddy will be Mare's ex-husband. Erin was in love with him and they probably had the plan to have everyone think Dylan was the father because Frank would go to jail. In the first episode, it was mentioned that Erin and her father couldn't afford the baby's surgery or whatever. Erin tries to get Frank to give her the money and Frank's girlfriend overheard them talking. The girlfriend starts following Erin around and confronts her. She kills her Erin and takes off most of the clothes as a way of "shaming" Erin more in death.

Mare's ex husband is gross. I think it's the priest guy, or that Erin didn't get murdered, but lost consciousness after she got her ass beat. Although that doesn't account for her being found almost naked. Maybe one of Erin dad's friends knocked her up and she decided to tell, so he killed her.

Sharp Objects was lifeless and should have been half the length.

I lived in Central PA for about six years, 3 hours from Pittsburgh (lived there, too). Winslet nails the accent, for sure. Becca, Siobhan's surly girlfriend, is played by Madeleine Weinstein who played the love interest of closet cases in Alex Strangelove and Beach Rats.

Well, the no rape opens it up to female murders despite Mare thinking a woman wouldn’t be able to move the body. I think the deacon is a red herring and maybe he’ll actually be hiding that he’s gay and that’s what he’s being suspicious about, maybe even being involved with Mare’s cousin. I think Erin came to him that night for solace, but left her bike behind and he panicked.

If she was with the deacon or the priest and they were doing something improper (or were just worried it would look that way), maybe they panicked and stripped her (to get rid of evidence) and then dumped her body. Still loving the series! Like Broadchurch, Happy Valley, Unforgotten and other great Brit series, this one has such interesting character development and subplots that, in the end, the solution of the whodunnit, could be almost besides the point of the enjoyment of watching.

I think this is the first time I’ve seen Evan Peters in a non-Ryan Murphy or non-Marvel role, and he’s really doing great.

I love Guy Pearce, but he looked rough in that restaurant scene.

I haven’t seen much American Horror Story nor any X-Men film since X2 but of what I saw of Season 1 of Pose, Evan Peter was by far and away the best actor in it. I am surprised that he is considered to suck by DL, I think he is great.

I feel like this show is Evan Peters’ promotion. A slouch wouldn’t have been hired to film on HBO, all his scenes with Kate. I am a fan now. He’s such a character and has that great face, very handsomish at times.

I watch so much British TV in Australia and those those are markedly some of the very few good British TV shows, and not even all the seasons of the above were great. Most of even the high-end BBC output is utter shit with the marked exception of the excellent acting. The writing tends to be more faddish than what American TV and the direction is downright terrible.

I was a fan of Peters from that first season of AHS, so it is great to see him do such a wonderful job here and fully inhabit this character. After last night, I'm really looking forward to the rest of the series now.

Love the series but was it really necessary to cast 2 non-Americans, Guy Pearce and James McArdle as leads? There are 100s of American actors with just as much talent and even name recognition for those roles. Kate, of course, I get....and she's terrific.

At first I thought maybe they just included it to establish that Mare is the kind of cop willing to bend the rules to get what she wants (which at that moment could have just been to not have to deal with that silly yenta anymore that day when she had bigger fish to fry with Carrie). But considering "the prowler" was the very first storyline introduced in the show, and that they haven't dropped it yet, makes me think there's a lot more to it, and in fact may be the key to breaking the case. I have a feeling with this show that every character, every action, every line of dialog MEANS something... that there aren't a whole lot of throway choices here, and I appreciate that.

R384 While I don't think Siobhan did the deed, I do think she knows more than she's letting on. Either that or it turns out that Kevin is DJ's real father, and that she ends up being the one to make that discovery as she explores his suicide further via her documentary. Remember how when she was editing it at the end she wondered out loud who he might have been with him when he died, and also that he mentioned someone in the last message he left her but she couldn't make out who because it was cut off? And maybe we find out that she confided that to Frank, which is why he felt compelled to help with the baby. When he's explaining to Mare why the hell he'd even get involved with Erin and her baby he said it was because of the suicide. The timeline would line up. Kevin will have been dead for two years at the end of February and when we first meet Erin, it's the beginning of January and DJ is a little over a year old.

Some Datalounger posted that whoever was in charged of launching HBO Max was fired. Good. This is the most fucked up streaming interface I have encountered. On this series, when I hit play, I am never returned to spot where I paused viewing. I had to stop in the middle of episode 3. When I tried to resume, it started playing the fight scene from episode 1. I hit pause, and the episode title indicated it was on episode 3. WTF? I thought maybe this was some other aspect of the fight, so I kept watching. No, it was episode 1. I had to keep fucking with the remote control to finally get back to episode 3.

It also feel like it’s happening in real-time too, seven weeks of slogging through the case to arrive at an outcome.

One thing that struck me is that when John and his brother find Erin's dad by the creek, he is passed out on the rocks posed almost exactly the way his daughter was found. That seemed intentional. As far as we know, her father did not see the location where she was found. I think there is still more to that story. The dad was so intent on killing the babydaddy, so convinced he killed her, without any proof. It felt like he was projecting onto the kid for his own feelings of guilt. Maybe just guilt for being a shitty dad, but I think there's more to it.

Also, who exactly found DJ? They were out in the middle of the woods. It does seem awfully lucky that someone just happened to be on hand to find him and bring him to a hospital shortly after he was shot.

He admires this woman, and is impressed by her. As noted in the Vulture article from Joanna Robinson at R342's link, Peters wanted to play Zabel as eager to please Mare. So while the flirting probably only happened because he was very drunk, it was partially born out of that desire to please her, as much as it was not wanting to feel shitty anymore.

I keep thinking of the way Mare described the girl that is missing: will never be found, a drugged-out mess, etc.. Just the kind of person her son Kevin would spend time with. That's the direction I believe it's heading. Maybe not; it's fun speculating.

Kevin died two years ago, the first girl disappeared one year ago and now this happens. What if they are all connected and this is a serial thing happening on an annual date? Also, is the anniversary of the basketball championship this date? Do we know, might Erin’s mother have been another player on the team, we saw that there were quite a few of them missing. Maybe someone is targeting the children of the players each year?

I don’t have any problems with the HBO Max platform. Hulu, on the other hand, sucks lately. Anytime I pause a scene or rewind, the screen goes black when I hit play. I can hear it, but no picture. R415 I think that may be exactly the reason why Mare wasn't able to fully immerse herself in Katie's case, for the same reason that has always detached herself from Kevin's. It's the one blind spot she has that's hindering her detective work. My theory is that we'll eventually find out that baby DJ is Kevin's son (conceived right around the time of his suicide). Maybe that was the reason he ran out of the house in such a hurry--because Erin was sharing the news of her pregnancy with him. This could be revealed when they receive the results of Frank's paternity test, which would show a familial relation. The show may end with Mare taking in baby DJ to raise after losing the custody battle with Carrie, and getting a second chance at motherhood.

I am also suspecting more and more that Erin's death will turn out to just be a tragic accident or manslaughter at most, and that the real purpose of the show is to explore the ways that intergenerational secrets and un-processed traumas have torn apart all the families of Easttown, and how the only way to repair them is to unearth all the skeletons. Forcing Mare to temporarily surrender her badge and receive counseling to unpack the trauma of losing her son (and effectively her role as a mother entirely or even respected member of the Sheehan family) so that she can be a better detective and finally crack both Erin and Katie's cases.

I also have a theory that Richard is the father of one of the characters we've already met and also that he may be clandestinely writing a new book about Mare, true crime, and the opioid crisis in her town. The title? "Mare of Easttown".

Based on the article about the show I read in The New Yorker the other day, which is very positive and praises the show as a character study as well as the performances, the actual crime aspect of it was described as "rather mundane" (or something to that effect), so I don't think it's going to be that complicated.

IMO, I like binge watching. It helps with the continuity.

Yes R431/R432, and Richard also shared with Mare at their fancy restaurant date this week that he had a child with a woman many years ago but was a selfish prick of a father so she took the kid away and he hasn't seen it since. The thing is Guy Pearce is too big a name to provide nothing more to the storyline than a casual shag for Mare, especially since he's way out of her league--reason tells us he must be there to ultimately serve as some kind of momentous foil. Which means he's either the killer (too obvs, too snore), or they made him a writer for a reason and he's somehow mining her life/Easttown for a story. And because the failures of parenthood is such an overriding theme, his relationship with his estranged kid is guaranteed to play a bigger role in the story.

I think most of Guy Pearce's role was probably filmed after the Covid delay since he replaced another actor. A lot of actors just want to work so we're going to see a lot of names taking smaller roles. We've seen it with some upcoming films that have really stacked casts. Plus, he and Kate are friends and she probably asked/suggested him for the role. So I think r436 is right and he's just a vessel for Mare to tell her backstory.

How can it be considered for Emmys when they've only aired half of it? I realize that some industry people have seen all of it, but it would be presumptuous of the article to tout the show as a nominee yet.

Variety and sites like Gold Derby will tout and do early Emmy predictions months before nominations are announced. The predictions at Gold Derby by the experts and editors can be hilarious at times because some of their early predictions about nominees never pan out.

There’s been a lot of chatter on review sites about what the episode title means “Enter Number Two.” It struck me as a lyric and plugging it into Google you, of course, immediately get Gordon Lightfoot’s If You Could Read My Mind. The irony is the rest of the line “a movie queen to play the scene” which just sounds like an inside joke about Kate being on the show. I’m thinking it’s referring to drunk Kabel exposing his feeling and becoming another suitor to Mare in addition to Richard. Other key lines are “heroes often fail” and the mention of ghosts as well as other possible touchstones in the song which could relate to things in the show.

Wouldn’t this be in the Limited Series category?

Carrie will probably end up being kidnapped by that guy and will end up rescued by Mare and the other cops. That will probably lead to Mare and Carrie coming to some kind of agreement about Drew.

There are too many characters for a mini series. It only makes sense if the they hope for a season 2.

This series is OK but not sure it improves on the European models. I feel zero tension and suspense, even though there are murders and teen prostitutes in horrible dark captivity.

It relies too much on backstory. There should be more tension built right into the characters interacting with each other. They don't interact enough.

Episode 4 was mostly comedy, truly an unexpected turn. Jean Smart is there for some slapstick and situational comedy. Hiding the ice cream. Getting knocked down by a crazy lesbian. So many shenanigans.

Mare lives with her mother, too. Is it weird, though, that I didn't immediately think that about Colin? I assumed his mother was just over for dinner, ha ha. Then again, he was about to get married and then got the stuffing knocked out of him when she dropped him, so I could see him moving back in with his mother while he deals with his depression.

Look at how bleak her situation. And I doubt she knew for sure who was really the father of her baby, but deemed Dylan's family her best option for her child. There was nothing said to indicate she set him up. I'm kind of starting to like Dylan. He has feelings for the baby even if its not his. And his parents are decent people.

A friend of mine remarked that Annie Potts must be super jealous that her old co-star Jean is getting all these award recognitions and roles in prestige projects. I agree that Annie may be jealous of all that, but she has that Young Sheldon money rolling in and is probably just happy as a clam.

Jean Smart is one of those very lucky actresses who has an even bigger career as an older woman than she did when she was young. She works constantly in quality projects.
