HBO launched its new series set in the exburbs of a drab small town outside of Philly with a spot on dialect spouting Kate Winslet as a police detective hitting a wall in a dead end missing girl’s case only to be confronted with another young woman murdered a year later. Reviews seem good and it’s very atmospheric and true to Pennsylvania, although not a single WaWa was spotted in the first episode.
Mare of Easttown starring the transcendent Kate Winslet with Evan Peters, Jean Smart and Guy Pearce
|by Anonymous||reply 599||a day ago|
Good so far. Liked the first episode.
|by Anonymous||reply 1||04/18/2021|
"Mare?" Why didn't they cast Sarah Jessica Parker?
|by Anonymous||reply 2||04/19/2021|
OK, some recaps cleared up for me that Mare’s grandson is not the son of her daughter, which was unclear or introduced in a blink and you miss it bit of dialogue. I was wondering why all these 13 year old girls were knocked up in this town. I guess she has a missing son, but then the kid must also have a missing mother as well to be living with his grandma.
|by Anonymous||reply 3||04/19/2021|
It sounds depressing. Not sure I need more depression in my life.
|by Anonymous||reply 4||04/19/2021|
R4 Some comparisons that drew me in were it’s similarities to Top of the Lake and True Detective (which I only saw the first season) which I found impressive and I’m not one to usually watch police procedurals and were drawn to them as I am to this. There is also something of Prime Suspect about it as well.
|by Anonymous||reply 5||04/19/2021|
I'll pass. I can't stand Evan Peters and whilst a like the other actors involved its not enough to make up for Peters.
|by Anonymous||reply 6||04/19/2021|
Peters doesn’t show up in the first episode, so I don’t yet have any idea of his performance. It’s just going to be nice to see him outside a Ryan Murphy production and see what he might actually have concerning acting chops.
|by Anonymous||reply 7||04/19/2021|
Looking forwarding to watching this tonight.
|by Anonymous||reply 8||04/19/2021|
|by Anonymous||reply 9||04/19/2021|
Used to live in West Chester so I'm more familiar with Westtown. I'll have to watch this.
|by Anonymous||reply 10||04/19/2021|
I heard it described as like an American Happy Valley which seems pretty accurate so far.
|by Anonymous||reply 11||04/19/2021|
Mare of Easttown: When you need a break from the dreary weather of gritty Danish crime shows.
|by Anonymous||reply 12||04/19/2021|
I thought it was good. Well acted and directed. I also did not get why she has a grandkid without parents. Kate Winslet looks like a hard heavy woman in her 50’s which is good for this character.
|by Anonymous||reply 13||04/19/2021|
Can’t wait to see it as a suburban Phillyite. Dying to hear her accent.
|by Anonymous||reply 14||04/19/2021|
They really made sure to showcase the accent in the first episode, she says 'wudder.'
|by Anonymous||reply 15||04/19/2021|
r3 I had the same thought. WTF is going on in this town that everybody seems to get pregnant in 8th grade? Is it something in the water?
|by Anonymous||reply 16||04/19/2021|
So Mare had a son who died and her grandson is that son's child? Is that correct?
|by Anonymous||reply 17||04/19/2021|
I was confused about the grandson too, but the Vanity Fair podcast said he was her son's child and her son had killed himself, though I must have missed that part. They'd said they'd not seen any episodes in advance so I mustn't have been paying attention.
|by Anonymous||reply 18||04/19/2021|
Yes. Mare has the lesbian (?) daughter in the band. And the grandson is by a dead son.
|by Anonymous||reply 19||04/19/2021|
She should hook-up with Excedrin or Tylenol: she always looks like a headache, and could be a spokesperson.
|by Anonymous||reply 20||04/19/2021|
I might actually check this out.
|by Anonymous||reply 21||04/19/2021|
I think her son committed suicide (?) and the kid’s mother will show up asking for custody even though she is a drug addict (?)
|by Anonymous||reply 22||04/19/2021|
I loved Happy Valley.
|by Anonymous||reply 23||04/19/2021|
Happy Valley was a brilliant show. If you haven't seen it, please check it out. It's a police drama but there's a lot of humor in it too and very poignant family dynamics. Sarah Lancashire and Siobahn Finneran were absolutely wonderful.
|by Anonymous||reply 24||04/19/2021|
How can Kate Winslet and I be the same age yet she almost looks old enough to be my mother?
|by Anonymous||reply 25||04/19/2021|
R25 Because that's only true in your own head.
|by Anonymous||reply 26||04/19/2021|
I have a mirror bitch and it's for realz.
|by Anonymous||reply 27||04/19/2021|
Kate is 45 but looks 55
|by Anonymous||reply 28||04/19/2021|
I enjoyed the first episode. Getting True Detective vibes. I love these kind of shows. Has a really good cast. Guy Pierce has really aged.
|by Anonymous||reply 29||04/19/2021|
R28 Being in a relationship with Sam Mendes will do that to you.
|by Anonymous||reply 30||04/19/2021|
I've been to the area of Pennsylvania where this takes place and they really got the look down. It's a depressing, dumpy area.
|by Anonymous||reply 31||04/19/2021|
Erin (the second girl found dead) had quite an enemy in the girlfriend of Erin's baby daddy. I'm sure he'll get custody now but I fear for the child with Beyond Mean Girl around.
|by Anonymous||reply 32||04/19/2021|
What kind of man lets his girlfriend beat down the mother of his kid in public? Is this a thing?
|by Anonymous||reply 33||04/19/2021|
Oh great, this mean 8 months of Winslet pissing and moaning and whining for an award.
|by Anonymous||reply 34||04/19/2021|
Winslet isn’t afraid to get ugly for a role. Do you think a poor small town cop wouldn’t look ragged?
|by Anonymous||reply 35||04/19/2021|
The NY Times gave this a bad review but all the comments here are reviving my interest.
|by Anonymous||reply 36||04/19/2021|
R36 my issue is that there are a LOT of characters introduced, and some of them weren’t great. Could’ve used a 2 hr pilot. Or saved a few for episode 2
|by Anonymous||reply 37||04/19/2021|
Haven't seen the NYT review but it's averaging 81% on Metacritic. It has a kind of British/European bleakness to it you don't often see in American dramas. I've seen it compared to Broadchurch, Happy Valley and The Killing.
|by Anonymous||reply 38||04/19/2021|
I enjoyed it. I like Evan Peters so I look forward to his character's introduction.
|by Anonymous||reply 39||04/19/2021|
Cat Blanchett will be the next actress to play a ragged woman detective in a miniseries hoping to get an Emmy.
|by Anonymous||reply 40||04/19/2021|
R37 That’s what makes this a bit more sophisticated with expectations that unlike most American drivel people should be smart enough to keep up. Not to mention in a murder mystery you’ve got to plug in a lot of potential murders and red herrings before the death. Also, they did save the Evan Peters reveal for episode two.
|by Anonymous||reply 41||04/19/2021|
I usually like bleak but I don’t know if I’ll end up liking this or not. It’s definitely the most white trash show I’ve seen not set in the South.
|by Anonymous||reply 42||04/19/2021|
r42 honey you have no idea what white trash is if you think these people are white trash.
|by Anonymous||reply 43||04/19/2021|
This type of crime drama is nothing we haven't seen before, but I enjoyed the premiere. It is well acted and competently made so I am down for the ride.
|by Anonymous||reply 44||04/19/2021|
I looked up the real Easttown PA, and it has an average household income of about 100k.
|by Anonymous||reply 45||04/19/2021|
I bet the teen daughter will come out as trans.
|by Anonymous||reply 46||04/19/2021|
r45 tv and movies do that all the time. They take a real-life town or city and either make it high class or low class when the actual area is just the opposite.
|by Anonymous||reply 47||04/19/2021|
There are some real pieces of shit out there who have done worse than that to the mother of their child r33.
|by Anonymous||reply 48||04/19/2021|
I wanted to like this, but I couldn't get into it
|by Anonymous||reply 49||04/19/2021|
Kate Winslet is transcendent? As opposed to being cis-scendent? I guess Leo has that effect on some people.
|by Anonymous||reply 50||04/19/2021|
According to this article, the dead son was on the autism spectrum. Maybe, the mother of the grandson was also autistic and that may explain why Mare has custody.
|by Anonymous||reply 51||04/19/2021|
How many “detective in a bland drab small town where everyone has secrets investigates missing victims” television shows do we need?
|by Anonymous||reply 52||04/19/2021|
Thanks r51. Like a few others, I was unclear about exactly what was going on there.
|by Anonymous||reply 53||04/19/2021|
I think the point of the grandson being constantly mentioned is so that as each family member is introduced, you become keenly aware of the fact that there is no one there who is the parent of the grandson. And Mare's an unrelenting cunt through most of the episode, complaining to a woman with cancer and a missing daughter how she doesn't appreciate the passive aggressive use of a news team to get the local police to actually do something about it. Obviously she's a joyless bitch who has a tragedy in her past. I am sure she will tell us all about the tragedy of her son at some point while in bed with her new lover.
I lived in Central PA for a bit and it was the worst five years of my life. They definitely got the dreariness down perfectly. I could tell it was PA before I even read a review. Strangely, while the NYT may have panned it, The Guardian and a few other UK papers were breathless over it and Winslet's performance.
All that being said, I kind of liked this first ep and will tune in for more.
|by Anonymous||reply 54||04/19/2021|
I don’t pay attention anymore to the New York Times. They suck including their culture critics.
|by Anonymous||reply 55||04/19/2021|
Im bothered that they chose to use Easttown - which is in reality an affluent suburb with a top-10 school district filled with “successful” corporate type families. I appreciate what they are going for - but they really should not use Easttown. Wonder why they did?
|by Anonymous||reply 56||04/19/2021|
They should've set it in Mechanicsburg. Now that's a real depressing shithole.
|by Anonymous||reply 57||04/19/2021|
Well, at least Nicole Kidman is not in it.
|by Anonymous||reply 58||04/19/2021|
Plastic-faced Kidman playing working-class would be insane.
|by Anonymous||reply 59||04/19/2021|
I worked with both her and Guy Pearce before, and I wish I were working on this, even though costumes for this would be a SLOG.
They are both wonderful on set, funny.
|by Anonymous||reply 60||04/19/2021|
R16, that would be something in the "wutter"
|by Anonymous||reply 61||04/19/2021|
R56 He grew up in nearby Berwyn, it says here he knows Easttown is going to be mad at him.
|by Anonymous||reply 62||04/19/2021|
R57 Wow, Mechanicsburg is your go to hellhole, did you never go to Perry or York counties?
|by Anonymous||reply 63||04/19/2021|
Mechanicsburg is pretty bleak. I'm familiar with everywhere in PA.
|by Anonymous||reply 64||04/19/2021|
Yes, R64, the filming location for the discount store in Mannequin and wholesome small town in Girl, Interrupted is bleak, have you been to downtown York or Lancaster lately, or Harrisburg anytime for that matter?
|by Anonymous||reply 65||04/19/2021|
|by Anonymous||reply 66||04/19/2021|
The shot of her driving at 3 a.m. and seeing the "prowler" was creepy as hell.
|by Anonymous||reply 67||04/19/2021|
R65: I'm not R64, but I live in Lancaster and go to York and Harrisburg often. My sister lives in York. Even more depressing than Mechanicsburg would be somewhere like Shamokin. Personally, to this Lancastrian's ear, at times the dialect was a little *too* much, like she was over-enunciating so people could clearly hear it.
|by Anonymous||reply 68||04/19/2021|
R56, do you mean "Easton"? There is no "Easttown," AFAIK.
BTW, Easton is not a suburb of Philly. It is a part of its own MSA, ABE, AKA Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton.
|by Anonymous||reply 69||04/19/2021|
“Wawa was a big part of my life for well over a year,” Winslet said, adding that co-star Evan Peters became obsessed with the shop’s famous Gobbler sandwich.
Me too, Evan.
|by Anonymous||reply 70||04/19/2021|
Ugh, Katie Bailey’s not going to turn out to be the mom of Mare’s grandson is she? They didn’t hold that back to make it a shocking reveal to the viewers since the town would already know, that would be a cheap shot to me. Would they have let her be the lead on the case if it was?
|by Anonymous||reply 71||04/20/2021|
R71 I doubt it. In the season trailer, a young woman was yelling at winslet about access to “her son”
|by Anonymous||reply 72||04/20/2021|
What’s with the reference to that weird Michelle Pfeiffer movie?
|by Anonymous||reply 73||04/20/2021|
r73 What weird Michelle Pfeiffer movie?
|by Anonymous||reply 74||04/20/2021|
Easttown is definitely a real place r69, I linked linked Wikipedia page about it at r45.
It's just more well to do than it is portrayed in this series.
|by Anonymous||reply 75||04/20/2021|
Yet more copaganda.
|by Anonymous||reply 76||04/20/2021|
Ben Miles is cast as the same character name as Guy Pearce. Shades of YOI there.
|by Anonymous||reply 77||04/20/2021|
r77 I'm pretty sure that Guy Pearce replaced Ben Miles, who was originally cast in the role.
|by Anonymous||reply 78||04/20/2021|
I don’t have HBO, but if I did, I would be watching for Guy, not Kate.
|by Anonymous||reply 79||04/20/2021|
|by Anonymous||reply 80||04/20/2021|
In my opinion you can't go wrong watching Kate Winslet.
|by Anonymous||reply 81||04/20/2021|
Kate is my favorite hag!
|by Anonymous||reply 82||04/20/2021|
I was thankful she kept the fun bags covered during her sex scene with Guy.
|by Anonymous||reply 83||04/20/2021|
Winslet is one of my absolute favorites. But I don't know if I could put up with the obnoxiously untalented Evan Peters even for her.
I seriously can't stand him. I mean, AT LEAST if he were attractive... But he hasn't even got good looks.
|by Anonymous||reply 84||04/20/2021|
The show is set in Delco. Not Chester County. “Easttown” is code for Upper Darby, most likely. Maybe Springfield.
|by Anonymous||reply 85||04/20/2021|
R84, he loves to show his ass. That’s a good thing.
|by Anonymous||reply 86||04/20/2021|
Aw, man. Seeing Erin’s father, it made sense that she was a teen mom with that loser.
|by Anonymous||reply 87||04/20/2021|
It's nice to see something that isn't about superheroes.
|by Anonymous||reply 88||04/20/2021|
What has this middle-aged English women been imported to impersonate a natural-born Philadelphian?
|by Anonymous||reply 89||04/20/2021|
[quote] the transcendent Kate Winslet
The word 'transcendent' means 'beyond or above the range of normal or physical human experience'.
This PR Hack must be illiterate.
|by Anonymous||reply 90||04/20/2021|
Loved the first episode. I'm an unrepentant Anglophile and this series evokes the best of the British shows like Happy Valley, Unforgotten, etc. in which you meet a lot of characters and have to wait to see how they're all related to each other. Great writing and direction and beautifully cast.
Oh, and the women look like real people (Nicola Walker!), so I liked seeing Kate and the wonderful Julianne Nicholson (Mrs. Jonathan Cake in real life) and Jean Smart without plastic surgery and gobs of makeup.
|by Anonymous||reply 91||04/20/2021|
Unforgotten is also a great show.
|by Anonymous||reply 92||04/20/2021|
[quote] Julianne Nicholson (Mrs. Jonathan Cake in real life)
|by Anonymous||reply 93||04/20/2021|
The shows creator is from Chester County r85, and this show was filmed in Downingtown and Coatesville and other locations in Chester County.
You are way other thinking it, the location is in the name. It takes place in a fictionalized version of Easttown PA.
|by Anonymous||reply 94||04/20/2021|
I loved it. But I'm a sucker for The Killing type shows. Can't wait for next week.
|by Anonymous||reply 95||04/20/2021|
This show needs more ... Chris Messina! He was just gorgeous and amazing in Sharp Objects and The Sinner.
|by Anonymous||reply 96||04/20/2021|
Chris Messina could jump on my cock anytime.
|by Anonymous||reply 97||04/20/2021|
Actually, the Brit show it most resembles is BROADCHURCH. Lots of suspects and subplots in a small town and, I have a feeling, by the time the murderer is discovered, it doesn't really matter. It's not really a whodunnit in that respect.
|by Anonymous||reply 98||04/21/2021|
R98 I remember that one and the American remake Gracepoint. I got the same vibe watching the first episode of this show.
|by Anonymous||reply 99||04/21/2021|
I’m thinking this is supposed to be Delco too. Which is why using Easttown is just totally wrong - even as a pseudonym Easttown is a wealthy semi-Main Line area that includes parts of Wayne. The Easttown schools district (Tredyffrin-Easttown) are top notch and the people generally well educated.
The accent is Delco. The setting is more like Bradley Cooper in Silver Lings Playbook - Havertown I think. Or Upper Darby/Glenolden/Clifton Heights (Tina Fey SNL skit)
|by Anonymous||reply 100||04/21/2021|
Why the Rolling Rock? I’m kind of thinking she has to be one of the better educated people in this town to be a detective. Maybe she went to school in Western PA and picked up a proclivity for it there, and in her own little way that makes her feel different and slightly escapist in that town where she is so weighed down by everything else? Who knew PA was so high up on the craft beer states?
|by Anonymous||reply 101||04/21/2021|
R101, that’s actually interesting. Yuengling is much better than Rolling Rock.
|by Anonymous||reply 102||04/21/2021|
My Philly-born mother wasn’t impressed with her accent.
|by Anonymous||reply 103||04/21/2021|
R94, this was filmed all over Delco. I put up with this shit driving around their filming-induced detours.
|by Anonymous||reply 104||04/21/2021|
Re: the name controversy: "Before we go any further: Yes, Easttown is in Chester County, not Delaware. Creator and executive producer Brad Ingelsby, who grew up in Berwyn, said he chose to place Mare there because “it sounded like such a generic town name.” But the town in the show is “sort of an amalgam,” he said. “It’s Coatesville, it’s Aston, it’s Drexel Hill.” Filming included locations in both counties as well as Philadelphia." From the Inquirer
And the lack of Yuengling, which I drank like water in college, may be a choice by the production because Yuengling endorsed the former President.
|by Anonymous||reply 105||04/21/2021|
I can't be believe we have a poster trying to argue that the show "Mare of Easttown", is not supposed to be set in Easttown. But instead is set in Delaware County somewhere.
People will get on in the internet and try to argue about anything.
|by Anonymous||reply 106||04/21/2021|
I grew up in Havertown. Graduated from Haverford High. Saw the first ep. The setting isn't Havertown-y, [R101]. Not even the part adjacent to Upper Darby Twp. It's Coatesville and Aston and Clifton Heights and Boothwyn and (parts of) Downingtown.
|by Anonymous||reply 107||04/21/2021|
Sorry-- R100, not 101.
|by Anonymous||reply 108||04/21/2021|
If he wanted the town in question to be a mashup of trashy suburban Philly, why not just use a generic name that wasn't...an actual local town?
|by Anonymous||reply 109||04/21/2021|
Stay in Boy's Town where jawn belong.
|by Anonymous||reply 110||04/21/2021|
How long until the investigation leads to Woodys or Tavern on Camac?
|by Anonymous||reply 111||04/21/2021|
For what it's worth, when she spots Freddie walking, before she starts chasing him, she radios into dispatch and says, "75-51 Delcom. I got eyes on the burglary suspect. 200 block of Glenn Riddle, heading east."
|by Anonymous||reply 112||04/21/2021|
This sounds like a remake of Happy Valley.
Is this a remake of Happy Valley?
|by Anonymous||reply 113||04/22/2021|
I looked for this Happy Valley so many of you speak of, but don’t see it streaming anywhere. Maybe I’ll check Acorn at the library, it’s British right or is it Kiwi or Aussie?
|by Anonymous||reply 114||04/22/2021|
Drexel Hill makes sense - and Aston. I wish he had used that name. Delco is getting a lot of attention lately. Perhaps one of the few areas left in the metropolitan US that has remained provincial and inbred enough to retain its unique culture and accent.
|by Anonymous||reply 115||04/22/2021|
It is interesting that it’s this kind of community and not set in Western PA where we see it all the time, but in the exburbs of Philly.
|by Anonymous||reply 116||04/22/2021|
That's an interesting point, 116. The first ep. definitely felt like it could've easily been filmed in New Kensington or McKees Rocks or some parts of Monroeville.
|by Anonymous||reply 117||04/22/2021|
Happy Valley is a British show. It's excellent. Two seasons.
|by Anonymous||reply 118||04/22/2021|
I can't believe that all those mentioning Happy Valley have neglected to mention it was the first time we Americans were exposed to the delightful James Norton.
|by Anonymous||reply 119||04/22/2021|
James Norton was good, but I was blown away by Sarah Lancashire and Siobahn Finneran. Fucking fantastic performances from both of them.
|by Anonymous||reply 120||04/22/2021|
Happy Valley is on Netflix
|by Anonymous||reply 121||04/22/2021|
I don't know where you are located r121, but Happy Valley is not on Netflix in America.
|by Anonymous||reply 122||04/22/2021|
Sorry. It was.
|by Anonymous||reply 123||04/22/2021|
I love the theme song to Happy Valley.
|by Anonymous||reply 124||04/22/2021|
Happy Valley is on BritBox or you can torrent it safely (though obviously illegally) via rarbg.
|by Anonymous||reply 125||04/22/2021|
Watchseries has Happy Valley. That's my go-to for "free" streaming.
|by Anonymous||reply 126||04/22/2021|
What has happened to MY thread?
|by Anonymous||reply 127||04/22/2021|
Can anyone tell me where I can watch Happy Valley?
|by Anonymous||reply 128||04/22/2021|
^^On the internets
|by Anonymous||reply 129||04/22/2021|
Will someone please tell me if this is a remake of Happy Valley?
|by Anonymous||reply 130||04/22/2021|
No, it's not.
|by Anonymous||reply 131||04/22/2021|
How similar is this to the show Happy Valley?
|by Anonymous||reply 132||04/22/2021|
Can someone shoot the happy valley troll
|by Anonymous||reply 133||04/22/2021|
That town is such a depressing dump.
|by Anonymous||reply 134||04/22/2021|
R91, Kate Winslet and Jean Smart have had more cosmetic surgery than you have had hot dinners.
|by Anonymous||reply 135||04/23/2021|
I love you bitches. Only you guys can turn a middling Kate Winslet show into a geography lesson about bumfuck PA.
|by Anonymous||reply 136||04/23/2021|
Bumfuck, PA is located in the western part of the state and has nothing to do with Delco.
|by Anonymous||reply 137||04/23/2021|
[quote] How many “detective in a bland drab small town where everyone has secrets investigates missing victims” television shows do we need?
No, no! It has no majesty! "Drab" is such a ... drab word!
|by Anonymous||reply 138||04/23/2021|
Damn! This Kate Winslet is a good actress! She's got range and versatility.
She's an actress you feel is actually their character and not an actress acting.
|by Anonymous||reply 139||04/24/2021|
Kate Winslet also hasn't had excessive plastic surgery so she still looks like a real person and can play working-class characters. That's something actresses like Nicole Kidman or Julia Roberts couldn't do.
|by Anonymous||reply 140||04/24/2021|
Maybe I'm blind but Winslet doesn't look like she's had ANY plastic surgery. And if she had, wouldn't she have gotten ridden f those two disturbing warts under her nose?
|by Anonymous||reply 141||04/24/2021|
Winslet probably gets minor things done like the fillers.
|by Anonymous||reply 142||04/24/2021|
I'm not even sure of the fillers. She's clearly put on a little weight and her face has filled out, too.
|by Anonymous||reply 143||04/24/2021|
Winslet still looks real. I don’t know if she’s had anything done, but if she has, it’s not glaringly obvious.
Poor Julianne Nicholson was very pretty when younger, but did too much to her lips. And she is one of those rare women who looks prettier with short hair. Like Halle Berry.
|by Anonymous||reply 144||04/25/2021|
I think Julianne Nicholson is wearing a purposefully unflattering and dated wig in the series. There was a little featurette after the first episode on "The making of..." that interviewed her and she looks much cuter with a short pixieish hairdo. Don't know about her lips....they look unchanged to me from her younger days.

I think the show kind of does a good job with having Kate Winselt, Julianne Nicholson, and the character with cancer look like frumpy small town fraus who pretty much know they peaked in high school. I"m guessing there was drama between Mare and the cancer mom back in high school and the disappearance of the cancer mom's daughter only added to it.

When she's screwing things up with the new guy, I keep wanting to tell her, but that's Guy Pearce, woman. Straighten up.
|by Anonymous||reply 147||04/25/2021|
Yes! Guy Pearce looks pretty good here, all things considered. He went through that extremely haggard phase about 15 years ago.

I had a HS reunion a couple of years ago and wow if this isn't true! There were several people who looked so much different and older I was shocked, as we were in our thirties at the time. Crazy how some people's looks can change when they're still relatively young.

True or false: Neal Huff's career as a Broadway leading man was destroyed by the huge pubic bush he displayed in Take Me Out (although it couched a sizable cock).

I’m tired of the furrow-browed one-note resentment of Winslet’s performance but the mystery is enjoyable, like the start of a beach novel.
|by Anonymous||reply 155||04/26/2021|
I really liked Episode 1, the overall tone, the performances and where the story seems to be going, but, my God, the existence of those people is so depressing. It's almost like those NYT articles that tries to explain Trump voters to the rest of us.

Delco, or Delaware County, is neither an exurb nor a small town. It is a suburb immediately outside of Philadelphia, about a 30-40 minute drive from Center City.
It is, indeed, drab.

I thoroughly enjoyed Episode 2. All of the roles, down the smallest, are brilliantly cast, all the various mothers and the teenagers, especially.
But I have a question. The two brothers who Mare brought with her to tell the father about his daughter's murder....what is the brothers' relationship to the story? Why did she ask them to accompany her? Are they just friends of the father, or cousins? Or are we not supposed to know yet what their place in the town is about?
Maybe I'm putting more significance there than there is. I'm just not sure how those characters fit into the town's relationships.

[quote] I really liked Episode 1, the overall tone, the performances and where the story seems to be going, but, my God, the existence of those people is so depressing.
It shows quite how depressed people (socially and psychologically) can’t be bothered to groom beyond showering and how that bit of energy sapped out of them fucks their whole aesthetic - home furnishings, clothing hair. Like dye your hair or don’t, Mare, but pick a side and stick to it. Grow out your short hair, Julianne Nicholson, but you can wear a cute bob instead of a mullet during that growing out stage. These women are too tired.
The extra time and energy high self-esteem and a higher income bring have an exponential affect on appearance.
Some of it almost veers to poverty porn, though. The scene of Jean Smart mindlessly playing her iPad game was a bit not the nose. Likewise the dead girl microwaving Mac and Cheese for her father. Someone as vindictive as him would be pissed she didn’t at least in some ham and green onions and serve rolls on the side. The perceived respect of adding a 2 minutes more food prep time to a 90 second nuked meal means everything to men like that.

I think all the males are going to be red herrings and the murder twist is that it’s going to be a female. But we haven’t heard yet if she was raped, so that would discount that theory immediately. Although, why she would still be in panties if she was raped would be suspicious.

His character feels so unnecessary r179, I think thats the weakest part of the show.
|by Anonymous||reply 181||04/26/2021|
I go off into the deep end and guess it was the mother of the teen who went missing the year before in order to get the police fired up finding her daughter or whatever happened to her.
The guy played by Guy Pearce would be way too obvious (with him claiming to have moved only nine months ago, to give himself an alibi for not being around when the girl went missing the year before). Him playing cat and mouse with the local investigator would be way too on the nose.
|by Anonymous||reply 182||04/26/2021|
According to internet, Mare's ex-husband (played by Pam's dumb BF from the Office) is "Mark" Shaheen. I assumed "Frank Shaheen", the putative baby-daddy, was the dead by suicide autistic son. I am wrong?
|by Anonymous||reply 183||04/26/2021|
When did the son commit suicide again? Could he have been the murderer of the missing girl and mom covered it up?
I think the Guy Pearce character is doing some downlow research for his new book. He likely knew who Mare was when they met (in town for nine months and doesn't know the local legend?).
|by Anonymous||reply 184||04/26/2021|
[quote]When did the son commit suicide again?
Mare said it when she was talking to the doctor about the grandsons tics - two years he's been dead.
Also, according to the the Official HBO page and also IMDb, Frank Sheehan is the ex husband. The dead son's name is Kevin.
|by Anonymous||reply 185||04/26/2021|
I'm liking the theories here, but I have my eye on the Deacon Mark. It seemed kind of strange the way Mare's cousin was trying to suss out just how well he knew Erin. I think there is more to that story. Maybe after she got pregnant by Mare's ex, she confessed it to the priest. It seems like they are definitely heading towards Erin's murderer being tied to the woman's missing daughter, who was more than likely the first victim.
|by Anonymous||reply 186||04/26/2021|
I wonder if the victim called Mare's daughter a homophobic slur when they walked away from the mob and that's why the daughter let go and left the victim on her own? She doesn't seem to be happy with her recent girlfriend.
|by Anonymous||reply 187||04/26/2021|
If that's what really happened that night r187. I got the impression there will be more to the story of what happened that might with Siobhan and Erin.
|by Anonymous||reply 188||04/26/2021|
I don't get the catfishing plot. Why accuse the victim of still trying to get it on with her ex when she was willing to meet a new guy she met online (which turns out to be a fake created by the crazy current girlfriend of her ex)?
|by Anonymous||reply 189||04/26/2021|
The victim's name is Erin btw. Cailee Spaeny has a pretty impressive list of previous projects for her age.
|by Anonymous||reply 190||04/26/2021|
Is Mare's bff supposed to be an ex-cop? I wondered why that girl went to her house towards the end.
|by Anonymous||reply 191||04/26/2021|
I bet the prowler has some vital information to the murder case given he lurks around in the dark after midnight.
|by Anonymous||reply 192||04/26/2021|
So who is supposed to be the babydaddy, Mare's ex husband, Mare's dead son or Mare's priest cousin? I'm a bit confused.
|by Anonymous||reply 193||04/26/2021|
She was the town slut and they all shot loads into her, obviously.
|by Anonymous||reply 194||04/26/2021|
I think the baby daddy will be Mare's ex-husband. Erin was in love with him and they probably had the plan to have everyone think Dylan was the father because Frank would go to jail. In the first episode, it was mentioned that Erin and her father couldn't afford the baby's surgery or whatever. Erin tries to get Frank to give her the money and Frank's girlfriend overheard them talking. The girlfriend starts following Erin around and confronts her. She kills her Erin and takes off most of the clothes as a way of "shaming" Erin more in death.
|by Anonymous||reply 195||04/26/2021|
[quote]So who is supposed to be the babydaddy
Well, we don't really know for sure yet, but the girl who was Erin's bff said that she suspected Frank Sheehan to be, Mare's ex husband.
[quote]Is Mare's bff supposed to be an ex-cop? I wondered why that girl went to her house towards the end.
Perhaps because she felt more comfortable talking to Lori, who is Mare's closest friend, than actually going to the police where she would have to tell Mare to her face that she believed her ex husband was the father of the dead girl. I gather she felt a bit intimidated.
|by Anonymous||reply 196||04/26/2021|
Mare's ex husband is gross. I think it's the priest guy, or that Erin didn't get murdered, but lost consciousness after she got her ass beat. Although that doesn't account for her being found almost naked. Maybe one of Erin dad's friends knocked her up and she decided to tell, so he killed her.
|by Anonymous||reply 197||04/26/2021|
Well, the killer isn’t Guy Pearce because Mare was with him the whole night of the murder, wasn’t she? At the bar and fucking him at his house. Not sure what time she left his place, but I don’t think it’d track. Plus it seems like he’s gonna be serving some other purpose, plot-wise.
Damn, I’m already loving this show.
|by Anonymous||reply 198||04/26/2021|
R198 Mare does not spend the night, she see the prowler on the way home and puts her grandson to bed after using the bathroom and falls asleep in his bed waking to the vision of her dead son in the room.

|by Anonymous||reply 201||04/26/2021|
So Mare’s daughter is Siobhan Shaheen?
|by Anonymous||reply 202||04/26/2021|
I thought Julianne’s husband was an ex-cop for some reason.
|by Anonymous||reply 203||04/27/2021|
A previous poster asked why Mare asked the brothers, or cousins, to go with her when she broke the news to Erin's dad that she's dead. I think, since she knows them, she knew about his temper and that he would freak out when he hears the news. That's why she asked the other guys to come along to calm him down.
|by Anonymous||reply 204||04/27/2021|
My husband thought Lori was Mare’s sister because Julianne ALWAYS plays the sister.
|by Anonymous||reply 205||04/27/2021|
The new girl was pissed because Erin sent a message to her (maybe not) Babydaddy about how she missed him, so she created the catfishing thing to fuck with her r189.

Erin, in a moment of weakness, sent the supposed baby daddy a text reminder about how she used to give him blowjobs in his parent’s attic and the new girlfriend was pissed because that’s her thing now. If Erin only gave him blow jobs then there is a good chance he’s not the baby daddy and too stupid to understand how sex and reproductive works.

some of you have too much time and not enough brains. For example the twat above who typed that the exhusband is the dead girl's father. FATHER!? Not baby daddy. Love that. And the lesbian daughter is the retarded boys mother. And Mare is the first dead girl's mother not the second dead girl, cause that's her sister-daughter.
|by Anonymous||reply 209||04/27/2021|
The posters referring to the priest....do you mean Neal Huff who is Mare's cousin (and often seems to be hanging around her home) or do you mean James McArdle who is the deacon we see at the church service?
I think I somehow missed the significance of the McArdle character in the story and why there was suddenly ominous music surrounding him? What is his relationship to the plot so far? TIA!
|by Anonymous||reply 210||04/27/2021|

I was able to follow the plot, but not understand the new girl's motivation to beat Erin up. She set Erin up with a fake date and Erin expects to meet a new guy and the crazy girlfriend beats her up for, apparently, still being obsessed with her boyfriend? Erin showed she had no interest in the baby daddy anymore and was eager to start something new. And yet the girlfriend beat Erin up for a text she sent before the catfishing started.

|by Anonymous||reply 230||04/27/2021|
What was the long scene about her spitting out her duck liver pate about? It was a cliche, but they turned into a quite long scene with her slowly stuffing the napkin full of spit-out pate into the sofa cushion. It's a scene we've all seen fifty times before, but seemed to hold a different significance here.
Is Mare willing to hide things in plain sight? Think no one will notice? Leave a mess for others to clean up?

Mare's priest cousin is named Father Dan Hastings.

The mean girl who is now dating Erin's ex (Dylan) is Brianna.
We're to understand that Brianna is just one of those really nasty mean girls from poorer communities, but also that she is very jealous of Erin because Erin still had deep ties to Dylan because she had claimed Dylan had fathered her infant son. Erin had been trying to get Dylan to give more money for child support to take care of her baby boy's chronic infection.
|by Anonymous||reply 234||04/27/2021|
Well, she came back to the party, but told him there would be no sex tonight! Perhaps there is a serial killer who only murders young woman when Mare gets fucked? It was probably a year since she had when Katie Bailey went missing. You watch, next time Guy Pearce fucks her Brianna or Drew’s mother is going to die or disappear. And either would be setting Mare up to be framed for it too. It will be a race for her to have an active sex life and save her daughter Siobhan in time. There will also be heartbreaking scene where Jean Smart body doubles for her daughter Mare and gets murdered in retaliation by the killer.

Lol, @ R209, it was really late and I had typed out my sentence a few too many times -
[quote]where she would have to tell Mare to her face that she believed her ex husband was the father of the dead girl.
- "the dead girl's baby" is what it was meant to read. Obviously, it was typed in error, but by the time I noticed prime time was over. It's apparent by the rest of the post that I was referring to Frank being the babydaddy so no need for the hysteria.
The cousins to Erin's father - one being the husband to the Lori character, while the other younger one had a moment where the camera stayed with him, a look of doubt on his face. He knows something too, or is he involved. Maybe he's the guy going around peeping in people's windows. He did look sort of ferret-y. Was he the creeper that Mare saw stalking around the night Erin was killed?
Also, the father getting all emotional and screaming about his dead daughter - did anyone else get pissed at this scene? The guy treated his daughter like shit.
|by Anonymous||reply 246||04/27/2021|
That he treated her like shit and had hysterics on her death was written on purpose and may be an accurate characterisation of a sad broken dumb twat like he is.

Those moles on Winslet’s face? I know many people in middle age who have those strange skin-coloured moles which are really bumps below the skin. I have always wondered if there way some way of surgically removing them. I don’t imagine it would be easy, because I think the surgeon would have to dig to get rid of them, and they can’t just be flicked off the surface like usual brown moles.

And I don’t know what kind of medical coverage would deny ear tubes to a baby if they’re medically necessary. Medicaid would pay for that. Maybe because it’s Pennsylvania?

My senior year in high school , our girls basketball team won the state championship, beating larger schools from big cities. They had a 30 year anniversary celebration a few years back. Nope, I didn’t go. I have no family left in that backward little town, and never go back.

I would guess those mole things might even have been put on Winslet's face artificially to de-glamorize her. She's otherwise so beautiful it would seem odd people weren't constantly saying, "You know, if you'd just put on a lipstick lipstick and rouge you'd be a knockout!"

It's possible, you'll just be left with a divot on your face and it's impossible to predict in advance just how big that divot will be.

Mare did clean up well when she went to that event.
It's almost a trope that small town people need, like, ten minutes to change from homeless looking to looking presentable. The show made a point that she worked late and had to rush home to get ready and still made it.
|by Anonymous||reply 266||04/28/2021|
Suburban Philly is both sports crazed and stationary (I.e., a huge percentage never leave their hometowns). Believe me, obsessing about a high school championship 30 years later is perfectly normal. 50 year old guys will get together to celebrate the anniversary.
|by Anonymous||reply 267||04/28/2021|
I grew up in New Mexico and some towns would hold anniversary celebrations for past high school sports championships. A couple of years ago, a friend was telling me how her dad who played on a championship team went to a ceremony for the 50th anniversary of the championship.
|by Anonymous||reply 268||04/28/2021|
R268 Yes! How many of us know people in their 30's and 40's who still want to know where you went to high school. They talk about High school as if it was some magic, exceptional period in their lives.

Mare should not gone back into the fancy dancy pate party with the Mr. Continental the writer. He insulted her on purpose, playing some hideous power game not greeting his date. She has a think for intellectual men who treat women like shit, (ex-husband, the teen didler) because she is too smart for most of the nice guys in town.

I don't think nice guys would put up with her since she does seem a bit rough around the edges or at least aloof. Like the way she treats Evan Peters' character when they first meet.
|by Anonymous||reply 273||04/28/2021|
I hope we get to see Evan Peters butt

I wouldn't be surprised if Winslet picks up her second Emmy and 5th Golden Globe.
She's also a producer. Do producers get trophies when a show wins best x show, or is that only for the creator(s)?
|by Anonymous||reply 275||04/28/2021|
Idk about that... Golden Globe, sure, but even Amy Adams couldn't win the Emmy for Sharp Objects. Don't think Winslet will be a definite lock either; her performance so far has just been... perfunctory? Even her big emotional scene with the school counselor discussing her son's suicide and ticks. We'll see who she's up against and how competitive the field will be.
|by Anonymous||reply 276||04/28/2021|
Oh please. We're just 2 episodes in, r276.
|by Anonymous||reply 277||04/28/2021|
I think Kate Winslet's performance has been pitch perfect r276. I haven't seen her make a move with this character that doesn't feel lived in, very impressed.
You seem to want more showy scenes, and I personally dislike that mindset that good acting needs to be showy. Some screaming crying oscarbait.
|by Anonymous||reply 278||04/28/2021|
I'll take Kate Winslet playing an ordinary person over Fran MacDormand any day.
|by Anonymous||reply 279||04/28/2021|
Did Erin's father kill Dylan or just injure him?
|by Anonymous||reply 280||04/28/2021|
To be confirmed but he's PROBABLY dead. Shot twice, IIRC
|by Anonymous||reply 281||04/28/2021|
He didn't ask rationally at all. I think he'll blow his head off.
|by Anonymous||reply 282||04/28/2021|
A couple of predictions-Mare loses custody of her grandson. Dylan is eventually confirmed to not be the father of Erin's baby. Erin's dad goes to prison for murdering Dylan. The baby ends up in foster care and Mare adopts the baby to make for losing custody of her grandson.
|by Anonymous||reply 283||04/28/2021|

Sharp Objects was lifeless and should have been half the length.
|by Anonymous||reply 286||04/29/2021|
The Sharp Objects adaptation was something that I was supposed to love in theory, but I found it to be a bit lacklustre. This one is engaging me far more off the bat. Its vibe reminds me a bit of S1 of The Killing. Mireille Enos does no-nonsense tough as nails frump really well.

S1 of The Killing was excellent. Until they fucked it up.

R291 what is his accent?
|by Anonymous||reply 292||04/29/2021|
This talks about the real house where the exterior shots are filmed for Mare’s house. It said Erin died by gunshot, but I don’t remember that being stated and I assumed it was being bludgeoned to the head?

Jean Smart is wonderful. Haven't we all known women like her character IRL?
|by Anonymous||reply 294||04/29/2021|
Speaking of Jean Smart, her character will have to come to the fore at some point as a pivotal character. You don't hire Jean Smart to play video games on her iPad in the background.
|by Anonymous||reply 295||04/29/2021|
I wonder if Delta Burke will guest star as the killer?

|by Anonymous||reply 299||04/29/2021|
I lived in Central PA for about six years, 3 hours from Pittsburgh (lived there, too). Winslet nails the accent, for sure. There is a moment when she is trying to leave the party and Guy Pearce's character comes running out to talk her into staying. And she's lamenting how he just left her standing there like an asshole and she simply says, "Come on, man" that felt so real. I was thinking the same.

Cum awn, man!
|by Anonymous||reply 301||04/29/2021|

|by Anonymous||reply 302||04/29/2021|
It slipped my attention that the actress playing the mother of Mare’s grandson is Sosie Bacon. She looks very different from when she was on 13 Reasons Why.
|by Anonymous||reply 303||04/29/2021|
Becca, Siobhan's surly girlfriend, is played by Madeleine Weinstein who played the love interest of closet cases in Alex Strangelove and Beach Rats.
|by Anonymous||reply 304||04/30/2021|
Sosie looks kind of rough for 29.
|by Anonymous||reply 305||04/30/2021|
It's not that Sosie looks rough, it's that she has the face of a mature working-class woman but is not one.
|by Anonymous||reply 306||04/30/2021|
Sosie isn't much of a looker. She can do white trash really well.
|by Anonymous||reply 307||04/30/2021|
Everyone in this Easttown shithole looks rough. The men especially. Not a single piece of male eyecandy in this dump of a town.... what a shame.

Do you think Mare Winningham read for the part and was heartbroken when she didn’t get it?
|by Anonymous||reply 309||04/30/2021|
r308 that's what towns like this are like IRL. This is one instance where Hollywood really gets the look of a working class town and its people right. It doesn't happen too often.
|by Anonymous||reply 310||04/30/2021|
Hollywood hadn't nothing to do with this mini-series.
|by Anonymous||reply 311||04/30/2021|
r311 "Hollywood" is a general term. Most working-class depictions in popular entertainment aren't all that accurate.
|by Anonymous||reply 312||04/30/2021|
Dunno, r308. Erin's dad looked hot in a blue collar blow job in the woods sort of way.

R313 Giving or receiving?

Mare Winningham is really fat now. She's settled down to only doing supporting character parts.
|by Anonymous||reply 315||05/01/2021|
The absence of hot men is reflective of reality. There is a strange paucity of good looking men in suburban Philly. Philly in general is not known for good looking people. Lots of other positives - but the absence of hot men is sadly realistic especially for middle class guys.
|by Anonymous||reply 316||05/01/2021|
Honestly the cast of characters isn't fat enough to be truly realistic.
|by Anonymous||reply 317||05/01/2021|
R317, I was thinking the same thing. Even the tertiary background players aren't fat.
|by Anonymous||reply 318||05/01/2021|

This is the first time I have ever seen Evan Peters with a normal adult male haircut.
|by Anonymous||reply 322||05/02/2021|
Which is why I mentioned this is the hottest he's ever been in my previous post. The only mildly good-looking man on this show...
|by Anonymous||reply 323||05/02/2021|
Oh so Sosie's character supposed to be a loon too lol.
|by Anonymous||reply 324||05/02/2021|
I hope the who's the daddy shit gets resolved in the next episode.
|by Anonymous||reply 325||05/02/2021|
Native Pennsylvanian here: even beyond the accent, Evan Peters’ general demeanor in the drunk scene in tonight’s episode took me right back to my hometown. Uncanny.
|by Anonymous||reply 326||05/02/2021|
So who just watched ep 3? That baby's looking pretty sus to me at the moment. Doesn't seem upset at all that his mother's been murdered.
|by Anonymous||reply 327||05/02/2021|
[quote]I'm liking the theories here, but I have my eye on the Deacon Mark. It seemed kind of strange the way Mare's cousin was trying to suss out just how well he knew Erin. I think there is more to that story.
Told ya, bitches. So maybe the kid is the deacon's? He dumped her bike, but I feel like the fact that we saw him doing so this early means he didn't actually kill her.
I couldn't understand a lot of what he was saying, but Evan Peters did a nice job at the bar playing drunk. For a second there, I thought the camera was going to cut to them in her truck hooking up. Now that Mare is on leave, will Zabel try to keep working with her?
|by Anonymous||reply 328||05/02/2021|
Did anyone else get some vibes that something wasn't right with Zabel's story of solving the missing girl case? Especially because he seemed like kind of a dolt when they were canvassing the park. Like he's too much of a rookie to have made a case like that all on his own.
I will say, kudos to Peters for the way he made his delco accent stronger while drunk. Whether or not that was his own acting choice, it was a real nice touch.
|by Anonymous||reply 329||05/02/2021|
No way is it the deacon (the killer). They wouldn't give it away that easily. If anything I'd say he's covering for the priest (Mare's cousin).
|by Anonymous||reply 330||05/02/2021|
^^ Oooh, I was thinking the same thing! I feel like this is going to come back on Mare's family in some way. The cousin seems a bit shady.
|by Anonymous||reply 331||05/02/2021|
Right? I can't think of any other reason for his character to exist at this point.
|by Anonymous||reply 332||05/02/2021|
I always wondered what Evan Peters might be like if he got out from under Ryan Murphy’s thumb. He’s doing some really strong work here and has never looked better.
|by Anonymous||reply 333||05/02/2021|
Well, the no rape opens it up to female murders despite Mare thinking a woman wouldn’t be able to move the body. I think the deacon is a red herring and maybe he’ll actually be hiding that he’s gay and that’s what he’s being suspicious about, maybe even being involved with Mare’s cousin. I think Erin came to him that night for solace, but left her bike behind and he panicked.
|by Anonymous||reply 334||05/02/2021|
Yes! R334, I really like that theory. Maybe that would explain why Mare's cousin had him transferred from his old parish?
|by Anonymous||reply 335||05/02/2021|
The no rape also opens it up to potentially being an accident. Like maybe that tweaker Freddie from the 1st episode (who made another guest appearance this week). Maybe he comes across whoever Erin's with in the park and tries to hustle them for fix money and starts shooting. If she was with the deacon or the priest and they were doing something improper (or were just worried it would look that way), maybe they panicked and stripped her (to get rid of evidence) and then dumped her body. Having it all turn out to be just a random tragic accident after turning the whole town upside down and unearthing everyone's skeletons in the process would be the best non-twist twist.

I'm surprised we haven't had any scenes of Winslet on the toilet. That's pretty much a prerequisite for these "gritty" shows/films.
|by Anonymous||reply 343||05/02/2021|
Did Winsley always have that enormous mole above her lip?
|by Anonymous||reply 344||05/03/2021|
Winslet, sorry, couldn't see the keyboard over the mole.
|by Anonymous||reply 345||05/03/2021|
Usually the murderer never gets revealed in the first few episodes. Instead, sordid secrets get revealed about the suspects who are not the murderer like them getting checked off the suspect list. I imagine the show's main focus will be how a murder investigation reveals all kinds of secret in a town that may have something to do with the suspects' relationship with the victim.
|by Anonymous||reply 346||05/03/2021|
Why was Mare so shocked her boss would ask for her gun and badge?
|by Anonymous||reply 347||05/03/2021|
R347 Maybe, he let her get away with other shit in the past.
|by Anonymous||reply 348||05/03/2021|
That’s quite realistic, actually. The blonde female star of the office who is used to thinking her shit doesn’t stink always acts surprised when she’s called on it.
|by Anonymous||reply 349||05/03/2021|
Can any Catholics explain the professional relationship of Deacon to Priest? Not that it's probably important to plot but I'm just trying to figure out Mare's cousin's place in their church vis a vis the Deacon.
Still loving the series! Like Broadchurch, Happy Valley, Unforgotten and other great Brit series, this one has such interesting character development and subplots that, in the end, the solution of the whodunnit, could be almost besides the point of the enjoyment of watching.
|by Anonymous||reply 350||05/03/2021|
I think this is the first time I’ve seen Evan Peters in a non-Ryan Murphy or non-Marvel role, and he’s really doing great.
I love Guy Pearce, but he looked rough in that restaurant scene.
|by Anonymous||reply 351||05/03/2021|
I haven’t seen much American Horror Story nor any X-Men film since X2 but of what I saw of Season 1 of Pose, Evan Peter was by far and away the best actor in it. I am surprised that he is considered to suck by DL, I think he is great.
|by Anonymous||reply 352||05/03/2021|
I feel like this show is Evan Peters’ promotion. A slouch wouldn’t have been hired to film on HBO, all his scenes with Kate. I am a fan now. He’s such a character and has that great face, very handsomish at times.
|by Anonymous||reply 353||05/03/2021|
Guy Pearce would look 100% better with a simple old fashioned haircut. But I think the ragged look he's sporting is perhaps better for the character.....less glam, more real guy.
And for those questioning why there are no fat actors playing white trash in this? Did you watch those scenes of Kate Winslet tromping around in her tee shirt and too tight jeans last night?
|by Anonymous||reply 354||05/03/2021|
[quote] Like Broadchurch, Happy Valley, Unforgotten and other great Brit series
I watch so much British TV in Australia and those those are markedly some of the very few good British TV shows, and not even all the seasons of the above were great. Most of even the high-end BBC output is utter shit with the marked exception of the excellent acting. The writing tends to be more faddish than what American TV and the direction is downright terrible.
|by Anonymous||reply 355||05/03/2021|
I was a fan of Peters from that first season of AHS, so it is great to see him do such a wonderful job here and fully inhabit this character. After last night, I'm really looking forward to the rest of the series now.
|by Anonymous||reply 356||05/03/2021|
I had my issues with the episode last night. Mare framing her with drugs from evidence just seemed so sloppy. I mean like her boss said the image on them alone was distinctive. Mare is a lot of things but dumb isn't one of them.
I thought it was the weakest written of the first three.
|by Anonymous||reply 357||05/03/2021|
I thought the rest of the episode was fine, but yeah, I didn't buy that Mare would be that stupid with planting drugs.
|by Anonymous||reply 358||05/03/2021|
I believe the Deacon is definitely involved. He is slimy. This is a cat & mouse game plot device. But the victim was shot twice. Deacon wasn't the guy who shot the victim. That is not a plausible plotline.
|by Anonymous||reply 359||05/03/2021|
Love the series but was it really necessary to cast 2 non-Americans, Guy Pearce and James McArdle as leads? There are 100s of American actors with just as much talent and even name recognition for those roles. Kate, of course, I get....and she's terrific.
|by Anonymous||reply 360||05/03/2021|
The murderous baby-daddy-deacon plot line is straight out of "Grantchester."
I'm not familiar with Evan Peters' prior work, but his "Mare" bar scene alone certainly deserves a nomination come Emmy season. The secret to playing a drunk is not to act as though intoxicated, but to interpret the process of trying to appear sober.
|by Anonymous||reply 361||05/03/2021|
R354 She gets away with it.
|by Anonymous||reply 362||05/03/2021|
Why did Mare protect the creepy neighbor kid of the grumpy old lady by deleting the cam footage?
|by Anonymous||reply 363||05/03/2021|
Yeah a kindergartner could've come up with a better plan. You're telling me she couldn't get her hands on drugs in a trashy suburb?
|by Anonymous||reply 364||05/03/2021|
Could be that one of the town's fine, upstanding youths is the serial killer; my money's on passive/aggressive Siobhan with parental issues. In how many episodes is the cute disk jockey scheduled to appear?

The baby has red hair. I can't recall any male gingers on the show.
|by Anonymous||reply 366||05/03/2021|
It's a good series, engrossing and riveting. Kate Winslet really is a fine actor. One forgets it's her. Guy Pearce and Jean Smart really become their characters, good writing. Mare's son took his own life, his son lives with Mare. The mother of that child wants custody of him.
|by Anonymous||reply 367||05/03/2021|
R366: WHET the Chris Brody character from "Homeland?" His father Nicholas was a ginger, and Chris' sister Dana was last seen working as a motel maid. Did Chris wind up moving to Easttown?

Glad to see IMDB was wrong and Jack Mulhern is in more episodes than two (updated to three episodes - WFT? Is the site adding episodes after they aired?). For a second I thought Dylan would try to kill the baby when he asked for it.

r369 It looks like he's be strongly considering it in the next episode.
|by Anonymous||reply 372||05/03/2021|
|by Anonymous||reply 373||05/03/2021|
R369 updating the cast list after episodes air seems perfectly fine, especially for a mystery show. If you know how many episodes an actor will appear beforehand, takes some of the mystery out
|by Anonymous||reply 374||05/03/2021|
r374, that is true. However, I find it odd that they do that with minor characters and not, say, the lead making it look like she could be in peril. Maybe it's about keeping a mystery about the whodunit?
|by Anonymous||reply 375||05/03/2021|

|by Anonymous||reply 376||05/03/2021|

It's very common for actors to have a few little nips before doing a drunk scene. They don't get drunk, they just get enough booze in them to make it more believable to appear drunk.
|by Anonymous||reply 379||05/03/2021|
It’s not beyond the realm of possibility that Mare (keep wanting to call her Madge) would steal the drugs.
When emotional, on multiple occasions times become aggressive and reckless and nasty, so adding stupid to the mix isn’t a stretch.
In line at the basketball game, the restaurant arrest, ignoring the request for a lawyer, lying to her grandson about the custody, verbally abusing her mother in front of Julianne, charging over to her ex’s house to scream at him in front of company, storming out of the literary party, treating her daughter like shit, fighting in the street with that father father of the girl she arrested.
This is early-00s era Elliot Stabler behaviour we are dealing with.

I was raised Catholic and my parents have/had friends who are/were Catholic deacons. Catholic deacons are like assistant ministers to priests. But, deacons can be married and they don't wear collars. They can perform baptism and funeral services. I can't recall if deacons can perform weddings. Catholic deacons typically don't live with priests in rectories. Most of the deacons my parents knew/know have/had jobs outside the church unless they are/were retired from other jobs.

r381, thanks for the explanation of a Catholic deacon. I was a little confused because there's something about the way the deacon here is portrayed (and maybe costumed?) that makes him appear more important than and above the character of the priest.
And yes, why did Mare delete the cam footage from the crabby neighbor's surveillance?
|by Anonymous||reply 383||05/03/2021|
R383 Could it have been her daughter who did it?
|by Anonymous||reply 384||05/03/2021|
R383 I am also riveted by that scene. At first I thought maybe they just included it to establish that Mare is the kind of cop willing to bend the rules to get what she wants (which at that moment could have just been to not have to deal with that silly yenta anymore that day when she had bigger fish to fry with Carrie). But considering "the prowler" was the very first storyline introduced in the show, and that they haven't dropped it yet, makes me think there's a lot more to it, and in fact may be the key to breaking the case. I have a feeling with this show that every character, every action, every line of dialog MEANS something... that there aren't a whole lot of throway choices here, and I appreciate that.
R384 While I don't think Siobhan did the deed, I do think she knows more than she's letting on. Either that or it turns out that Kevin is DJ's real father, and that she ends up being the one to make that discovery as she explores his suicide further via her documentary. Remember how when she was editing it at the end she wondered out loud who he might have been with him when he died, and also that he mentioned someone in the last message he left her but she couldn't make out who because it was cut off? And maybe we find out that she confided that to Frank, which is why he felt compelled to help with the baby. When he's explaining to Mare why the hell he'd even get involved with Erin and her baby he said it was because of the suicide. The timeline would line up. Kevin will have been dead for two years at the end of February and when we first meet Erin, it's the beginning of January and DJ is a little over a year old.

Some Datalounger posted that whoever was in charged of launching HBO Max was fired. Good. This is the most fucked up streaming interface I have encountered. On this series, when I hit play, I am never returned to spot where I paused viewing. I had to stop in the middle of episode 3. When I tried to resume, it started playing the fight scene from episode 1. I hit pause, and the episode title indicated it was on episode 3. WTF? I thought maybe this was some other aspect of the fight, so I kept watching. No, it was episode 1. I had to keep fucking with the remote control to finally get back to episode 3.
|by Anonymous||reply 386||05/03/2021|
R386 It's also streaming on hulu. That's where I've been watching it.
|by Anonymous||reply 387||05/03/2021|
Speaking of HBO Max, episode three wasn’t showing up at 10 o’clock or soon after so I watched the disappointing Pose launch instead. And yes, there are very problematic navigation issues as well.
|by Anonymous||reply 388||05/03/2021|
I still don't understand why we need HBOMax when we all have HBO and all the same shit on both.
I had the same shit experience getting to Ep 3 on HBOMax this morning. Kept going back to Ep 1 and wouldn't play.
Anyhow, I'd like to think the writers are setting us up for something bigger with the "Mare planting drugs on Carrie" story line. Just feels too stupid for the writers.
|by Anonymous||reply 389||05/03/2021|
I've never had any problems with HBO Max. Maybe it's the actual device you're watching it on.
|by Anonymous||reply 390||05/03/2021|
Was it established earlier that Evan’s character is from their town? He was having his high school reunion there, or close enough that he and his buddies would hit an Easttown bar after. I thought he’d been brought in from somewhere else in the state.
|by Anonymous||reply 391||05/03/2021|
Well he works for the county r391, not the state. So is from the same county this takes place in, just from a different town within it.
|by Anonymous||reply 392||05/03/2021|
|by Anonymous||reply 393||05/03/2021|
R391 He's from Upper Darby originally, which is a township in Delaware County.
|by Anonymous||reply 394||05/03/2021|
Wish this was in Netflix/Amazon where you can watch all episodes right away. I keep forgetting this is on Sunday night.
|by Anonymous||reply 395||05/03/2021|
R395 It’s more satisfying/intense for a murder mystery to be weekly and not having the instantaneous fix of loading another episode right away and it’s making for great discussion and speculation here as well. It also feel like it’s happening in real-time too, seven weeks of slogging through the case to arrive at an outcome.
|by Anonymous||reply 396||05/03/2021|
I like that you get a week to stew on it and rethink everything.
One thing that struck me is that when John and his brother find Erin's dad by the creek, he is passed out on the rocks posed almost exactly the way his daughter was found. That seemed intentional. As far as we know, her father did not see the location where she was found. I think there is still more to that story. The dad was so intent on killing the babydaddy, so convinced he killed her, without any proof. It felt like he was projecting onto the kid for his own feelings of guilt. Maybe just guilt for being a shitty dad, but I think there's more to it.
Also, who exactly found DJ? They were out in the middle of the woods. It does seem awfully lucky that someone just happened to be on hand to find him and bring him to a hospital shortly after he was shot.
|by Anonymous||reply 397||05/03/2021|
Same r395. I hate that HBO doesn't do binge watching.
|by Anonymous||reply 398||05/03/2021|
R397 Oh there's DEFINITELY something to that pose. Because yes, as far as we know, he was not shown crime photos. Her death pose is also remarkably similar to the pose we first see her in when she's lying in her bed rambling on to the baby.
I assumed it was Kenny's two cousins that found Dylan's body--that they went looking for him after Kenny confessed to shooting him.
|by Anonymous||reply 399||05/03/2021|
Also, DJ is Erin's baby. Dylan is her maybe-baby-daddy that Kenny shot in the woods.
|by Anonymous||reply 400||05/03/2021|
I can't believe some people want this to be a binge 🤨. Not releasing everything at once is what make shows have an impact. Even Amazon stopped doing the Netflix model. Notice how the Boys and Invincible got weekly releases. Disney+ never even considered it. The Netflix model sucks for a show.
|by Anonymous||reply 401||05/03/2021|
Thanks, R400. I keep getting the names mixed up. I assumed Dylan had been brought in the night before.
|by Anonymous||reply 402||05/03/2021|
Also...if you want to binge the show, just wait til its over and watch them all.
|by Anonymous||reply 403||05/03/2021|
r401 others have a different opinion.
|by Anonymous||reply 404||05/03/2021|
[quote]Notice how the Boys and Invincible got weekly releases.
What and what?
|by Anonymous||reply 405||05/03/2021|
Yes, watched it again and Dylan was luck in that he was found/brought in to the hospital very early, so it wasn’t Erin’s dad’s cousins who found him, it really had to be someone who was following Erin’s dad that night. I would think possible the real killer.
|by Anonymous||reply 406||05/03/2021|
I have to agree with other posters. While I do love, love, love the binge appeal of Netflix's original shows, I very much miss discussing each episode with others who like the show. A discussion about a Netflix show is about the entire season and comes down to what did you like best overall instead of going down to the nitty-gritty of each episode.
|by Anonymous||reply 407||05/03/2021|
More people are going to die right? Do you think they are setting up Kabel to be so lovely and sympathetic for when he dies in the line of duty, perhaps even sacrificing himself for Mare?
|by Anonymous||reply 408||05/03/2021|
Did Evan's character hit on Mare in that drunken bar scene? I was, like, WTF? Of all the women in town he goes for his cold and distant colleague?
|by Anonymous||reply 409||05/03/2021|
OK, so Kenny's cousins John and Billy....John is married to Lori played by Julianne Nicolson. Just trying to get my ducks in a row.
And don't forget about the girl who was a killed a year ago and her undiscovered killer.
|by Anonymous||reply 410||05/03/2021|
The actor who plays the deacon is only THIRTY-TWO? I thought he was in his late 40s.
|by Anonymous||reply 411||05/03/2021|
Well, it looks like the missing girl will come back up next week with the previews showing her mother being contacted by someone.
Kenny's cousins - Billy seems nervous and twitchy. I still have my eye on him. If he's not involved with Erin's death, he might definitely be involved in the missing girl's case.
[quote]Did Evan's character hit on Mare in that drunken bar scene? I was, like, WTF? Of all the women in town he goes for his cold and distant colleague?
He admires this woman, and is impressed by her. As noted in the Vulture article from Joanna Robinson at R342's link, Peters wanted to play Zabel as eager to please Mare. So while the flirting probably only happened because he was very drunk, it was partially born out of that desire to please her, as much as it was not wanting to feel shitty anymore.
|by Anonymous||reply 412||05/03/2021|
|by Anonymous||reply 413||05/03/2021|
Dylan's father is actually kinda decent-looking. Also, there's no way James McArdle is in his early 30's... he looks at least 44. He was good in Angels in America though... he got to see Russell Tovey strip naked multiple times a week during its run, and he got to cuddle with Oliver Jackson Cohen in bed in The Man in the Orange Shirt. Lucky BETCH.
|by Anonymous||reply 414||05/03/2021|
I am loving this show, and can hardly wait for episode 4. You guys have come up with some pretty good theories.
I keep thinking of the way Mare described the girl that is missing: will never be found, a drugged-out mess, etc.. Just the kind of person her son Kevin would spend time with. That's the direction I believe it's heading. Maybe not; it's fun speculating.
And if nothing else, I have learned of a band called Mannequin Pussy.
|by Anonymous||reply 415||05/03/2021|
Kevin died two years ago, the first girl disappeared one year ago and now this happens. What if they are all connected and this is a serial thing happening on an annual date? Also, is the anniversary of the basketball championship this date? Do we know, might Erin’s mother have been another player on the team, we saw that there were quite a few of them missing. Maybe someone is targeting the children of the players each year?
|by Anonymous||reply 416||05/03/2021|
R416 - that sounds way too horror movie to me.
|by Anonymous||reply 417||05/03/2021|
I don’t have any problems with the HBO Max platform. Hulu, on the other hand, sucks lately. Anytime I pause a scene or rewind, the screen goes black when I hit play. I can hear it, but no picture. The only way to get a picture back is to totally back out of the app then go back in. I have a Fire TV.
|by Anonymous||reply 418||05/03/2021|
Side note, anyone else impressed with Jean Smart's dexterity in her Fruit Ninja abilities? She looked like she still has pretty fast reflexes and accuracy with her finger swipes.
|by Anonymous||reply 419||05/03/2021|
James McArdle was in Ammonite with Kate Winslet (he gets his dick out).
He's also a "confirmed bachelor".
|by Anonymous||reply 420||05/03/2021|
R420 But he only got it out for Sariose right, Kate wasn’t flashed it in the movie?
|by Anonymous||reply 421||05/03/2021|
who spray painted the titties? was I supposed to recognize him?
|by Anonymous||reply 422||05/03/2021|
R415 I think that may be exactly the reason why Mare wasn't able to fully immerse herself in Katie's case, for the same reason that has always detached herself from Kevin's. It's the one blind spot she has that's hindering her detective work. My theory is that we'll eventually find out that baby DJ is Kevin's son (conceived right around the time of his suicide). Maybe that was the reason he ran out of the house in such a hurry--because Erin was sharing the news of her pregnancy with him. This could be revealed when they receive the results of Frank's paternity test, which would show a familial relation. The show may end with Mare taking in baby DJ to raise after losing the custody battle with Carrie, and getting a second chance at motherhood.
I am also suspecting more and more that Erin's death will turn out to just be a tragic accident or manslaughter at most, and that the real purpose of the show is to explore the ways that intergenerational secrets and un-processed traumas have torn apart all the families of Easttown, and how the only way to repair them is to unearth all the skeletons. Forcing Mare to temporarily surrender her badge and receive counseling to unpack the trauma of losing her son (and effectively her role as a mother entirely or even respected member of the Sheehan family) so that she can be a better detective and finally crack both Erin and Katie's cases.
I also have a theory that Richard is the father of one of the characters we've already met and also that he may be clandestinely writing a new book about Mare, true crime, and the opioid crisis in her town. The title? "Mare of Easttown".
|by Anonymous||reply 423||05/04/2021|
Based on the article about the show I read in The New Yorker the other day, which is very positive and praises the show as a character study as well as the performances, the actual crime aspect of it was described as "rather mundane" (or something to that effect), so I don't think it's going to be that complicated.
|by Anonymous||reply 424||05/04/2021|
IMO, I like binge watching. It helps with the continuity.
|by Anonymous||reply 425||05/04/2021|
What happened to Mare’s new assistant cop?
And I like HBO Max; there’s a lot on it that isn’t offered on HBO. Tons of great movies.
|by Anonymous||reply 426||05/04/2021|
Does this mean Cinemax is gone ?
|by Anonymous||reply 427||05/04/2021|
Where did HBO Go go?
|by Anonymous||reply 428||05/04/2021|
HBOGo/Now don't exist anymore r428.
It's all been rolled into the better online version of HBO that is HBOMax.
|by Anonymous||reply 429||05/04/2021|
R428 - If you had HBO Go (the free online version of HBO given to HBO cable/satellite subscribers) or HBO Now, the standalone HBO digital program that did not require a cable or satellite subscription, you are now an HBOMax member. You get all the same stuff that HBO Go/Now had, but also a bunch of other Warner Bros. content beyond that which airs/aired on HBO.
|by Anonymous||reply 430||05/04/2021|
Further to R423, were we given the reason for Richard's just "happening" upon Easttown and deciding to move there?
First "Grantchester," now a potential nod to "The Trouble with Maggie Cole;" someone working on the "Mare" script has been watching his share of British programming.
|by Anonymous||reply 431||05/04/2021|
[quote] were we given the reason for Richard's just "happening" upon Easttown and deciding to move there?
He said he got a job as professor at a local university.
Loved The Trouble With Maggie Cole.
|by Anonymous||reply 432||05/04/2021|
They should have set in Shamokin or Pottsville. Talk about depressing.
I loved Happy Valley too.
|by Anonymous||reply 433||05/04/2021|
Yes R431/R432, and Richard also shared with Mare at their fancy restaurant date this week that he had a child with a woman many years ago but was a selfish prick of a father so she took the kid away and he hasn't seen it since. The thing is Guy Pearce is too big a name to provide nothing more to the storyline than a casual shag for Mare, especially since he's way out of her league--reason tells us he must be there to ultimately serve as some kind of momentous foil. Which means he's either the killer (too obvs, too snore), or they made him a writer for a reason and he's somehow mining her life/Easttown for a story. And because the failures of parenthood is such an overriding theme, his relationship with his estranged kid is guaranteed to play a bigger role in the story.
|by Anonymous||reply 434||05/04/2021|
^^*overarching, not overriding
|by Anonymous||reply 435||05/04/2021|
I could see him as a glorified plot device of Mare opening up to him about personal things she wouldn't be sharing with any of the townsfolk. Especially with relatives like her mother, her kids, or her ex-husband.
I think that in itself could be interesting. The cold and distant Mare showing vulnerability at some point. And then terrified of that moment of weakness being used against her.
|by Anonymous||reply 436||05/04/2021|
r434 He said he now has a good relationship with his kid.
I think most of Guy Pearce's role was probably filmed after the Covid delay since he replaced another actor. A lot of actors just want to work so we're going to see a lot of names taking smaller roles. We've seen it with some upcoming films that have really stacked casts. Plus, he and Kate are friends and she probably asked/suggested him for the role. So I think r436 is right and he's just a vessel for Mare to tell her backstory.

Has anyone else noticed the trailer for the HBO film HACKS starring Jean Smart? Sorry not to provide a link, but all of us Jean fans will enjoy seeing her all glammed up again. Not sure, but it sort of looks like she's playing a character (loosely?) based on a Joan Rivers type.

There’s lots of chatter about MoE here, but also everywhere else, yet it’s not listed a s potential Best Drama Emmy here. Pose and Handmaid’s is, so it should be eligible as well, any ideas why it wouldn’t be?
|by Anonymous||reply 464||Last Friday at 5:11 PM|
How can it be considered for Emmys when they've only aired half of it? I realize that some industry people have seen all of it, but it would be presumptuous of the article to tout the show as a nominee yet.
|by Anonymous||reply 465||Last Friday at 7:28 PM|
Variety and sites like Gold Derby will tout and do early Emmy predictions months before nominations are announced. The predictions at Gold Derby by the experts and editors can be hilarious at times because some of their early predictions about nominees never pan out.
|by Anonymous||reply 466||Last Friday at 7:44 PM|
There’s been a lot of chatter on review sites about what the episode title means “Enter Number Two.” It struck me as a lyric and plugging it into Google you, of course, immediately get Gordon Lightfoot’s If You Could Read My Mind. The irony is the rest of the line “a movie queen to play the scene” which just sounds like an inside joke about Kate being on the show. I’m thinking it’s referring to drunk Kabel exposing his feeling and becoming another suitor to Mare in addition to Richard. Other key lines are “heroes often fail” and the mention of ghosts as well as other possible touchstones in the song which could relate to things in the show.

|by Anonymous||reply 480||Last Sunday at 7:14 PM|
Is the Deacon is rounding up all the girls who decided to be prostitutes ? I don’t think he killed Erin though. OTOH, The guy in the van seems like a big guy. Guy Pearce has a more important role in all this.
|by Anonymous||reply 481||Last Sunday at 7:23 PM|
I think the deacon knows that Erin was going to turn to prostitution to pay for the baby's surgery, but convinced her not to go through with it.
|by Anonymous||reply 482||Last Sunday at 7:28 PM|
All this has to do with Drew's mom, Carrie She does have a similar "lifestyle" to Katie Bailey and the new missing girl. Crackhead, and willing to do anything for more drugs. Her and Becca are unhinged druggies.
|by Anonymous||reply 483||Last Sunday at 7:33 PM|
Carrie will probably end up being kidnapped by that guy and will end up rescued by Mare and the other cops. That will probably lead to Mare and Carrie coming to some kind of agreement about Drew.

Anyone else think it could be Zabel? His fiance dumped him, he went sideways and took revenge on helpless women. The cold case he "solved" was his own victim. Biggest clue is he's in his mid-thirties and lives with his mom.

|by Anonymous||reply 497||Last Sunday at 9:26 PM|
I don't know why, but I got the sense that the guy who is kidnapping these women was Kenny, by his build. Is he currently in a jail cell for shooting Dylan while he awaits trial?
They are definitely painting the deacon as guilty, which is why I think he's not, and as another poster suggested was just trying to help Erin and talk her out of prostitution. And we still don't know who fathered DJ. I still think Frank is involved somehow, though, beyond merely buying some groceries for the girl.

Watched the first ep tonight (well, it’s 2am, so last night). I will stick with it for a while but it really has that patronizing Hollywood looks at flyover feel to it — like outside of NYC and LA isn’t just grinding poverty, depression and violence, rugs that smell like cat piss, and chorus lines of 13 year old trailer trashettes with pregnant bellies.
|by Anonymous||reply 508||Last Sunday at 10:04 PM|

|by Anonymous||reply 509||Last Sunday at 10:05 PM|
r508 it's pretty accurate, if you're familiar with towns like this. The creator of the show is from this region of Pennsylvania, he knows his shit.
|by Anonymous||reply 510||Last Sunday at 10:08 PM|
Yea, i vote it the most depressing new series of this or any other year. the sat nite live parody of it was FUNNY!!!!
The show takes itself way too seriously, maybe its actually a joke.

Evan's character would be no prize to Mare in that town. He lives with his mother ffs. He's also awkward as hell.
Mare's daughter fucks on the first date too.
I feel bad for laughing when cancer lady ran smack into that tank.

There are too many characters for a mini series. It only makes sense if the they hope for a season 2.
This series is OK but not sure it improves on the European models. I feel zero tension and suspense, even though there are murders and teen prostitutes in horrible dark captivity.
It relies too much on backstory. There should be more tension built right into the characters interacting with each other. They don't interact enough.
It's pretty cliché.
|by Anonymous||reply 526||Yesterday at 2:32 AM|
its a piece of shit similar to yes that nicole kidman piece of shit, tho winslet's portrayl is pure comedy, like a dyke in disguise. that the writer or cutie pie evan would wanna fuk her is beyond the beyond.... she reminds me of one of john waters bitches from Female Trouble

Odd that Colin is still living with his mother. He's a thirtysomething detective, he could surely afford his own place to live.

Episode 4 was mostly comedy, truly an unexpected turn. Jean Smart is there for some slapstick and situational comedy. Hiding the ice cream. Getting knocked down by a crazy lesbian. So many shenanigans.
|by Anonymous||reply 533||Yesterday at 7:55 AM|
Mare lives with her mother, too. Is it weird, though, that I didn't immediately think that about Colin? I assumed his mother was just over for dinner, ha ha. Then again, he was about to get married and then got the stuffing knocked out of him when she dropped him, so I could see him moving back in with his mother while he deals with his depression.
[quote]I lost my sympathy for Erin tonight. "Oh I'm gonna tell my boyfriend he's my baby's daddy because he has nice parents". What a fucking cunt.
Look at how bleak her situation. And I doubt she knew for sure who was really the father of her baby, but deemed Dylan's family her best option for her child. There was nothing said to indicate she set him up. I'm kind of starting to like Dylan. He has feelings for the baby even if its not his. And his parents are decent people.
Joanna Robinson obviously has a boner for Evan Peters at R519's Vanity Fair link. She is the worst writer, I don't know how she keeps her job. She allows all of her personal feelings for the actors/actresses to bleed into her reviews.
I found last night's episode to be the weakest so far. It just felt like filler for most of it. I didn't see the purpose of cancer mom's falling for an obvious ploy for money and then finding out she was set up by her bff's brother, beyond trying to flesh out her desperation. We didn't even get much of a therapy session for Mare this outing. I'm hoping things get back to business next week.

Even if young people aren’t practicing Catholics, being raised in that culture does a number on them.
I’ve never known anyone raised Catholic who didn’t have arrested development. The Church— like most religions— survives by infantilizing its followers and making them psychologically if not physically dependent on the Church.
Women are also encouraged to live through their children... so you have women who never want their kids to grow up.

R534 Her mother lives with her, not that she lives with her mother. A substantial difference. And grandma (in this case great-grandma) helping with childcare while living in the household is... well, been going on for millenia?
R533 I thought her "take" and comeback at the family meeting.... "I don't know what to say..." pause "... oh I know what to say, what a fucked up thing to do!!" was hilarious. The mother/daughter relationship, funny and "real", is one of the best things, most amusing things about the show.
Love the show. Don't really care "whodunnit"... the journey, not the destination.

R552: That child looks a bit androgynous to me and, perhaps, to the perpetrator(s).
Collin has some *serious* mommy issues, and Mare's rejecting him might just move him to strike out (again?).

Another mystery that I actually want solved - WHAT is Deacon James McArdle's TRUE age? Because there is no way on this planet/dimension/reality that he's only 32 (which would make him YOUNGER than Evan Peters)... especially when you look at them side by side in their scenes together.
He's gotta be at LEAST 44-45-ish.
|by Anonymous||reply 555||Yesterday at 10:17 AM|
He looks late 40s. Can he really be early 30s? Wow.
|by Anonymous||reply 556||Yesterday at 10:21 AM|
A friend of mine remarked that Annie Potts must be super jealous that her old co-star Jean is getting all these award recognitions and roles in prestige projects. I agree that Annie may be jealous of all that, but she has that Young Sheldon money rolling in and is probably just happy as a clam.
|by Anonymous||reply 557||Yesterday at 10:24 AM|
Jean Smart is one of those very lucky actresses who has an even bigger career as an older woman than she did when she was young. She works constantly in quality projects.
|by Anonymous||reply 558||Yesterday at 10:32 AM|
So far, I've loved her in all of her recent projects - starting with Fargo Season 2, as well as Legion.

[quote]It seems the teaser for the last 3 epiaodes revealed a lot. Lori's hubby is the culprit? Or was it just red herring?
I'm thinking it might be Lori's husband or her son. The son seems kind of weird. Maybe, it could be some weird situation in which the son accidentally killed Erin and the husband helped cover it up.
|by Anonymous||reply 560||Yesterday at 12:51 PM|
[quote]at the kitchen table mare's hair went dark again, not blonde.
Previously she maintained her hair color and is now walking around with half blond/half brown hair. She's lost interest in maintaining her appearance, which might indicate depression.

Zabel is the kidnapper. A local did something stupid and somewhat accidental to Erin and a few people are covering for him.

Kevin certainly seemed like quite an asshole in the flashback and Mare was obviously afraid of him.

Haverford, not Swarthmore. Mare's mother said so in a previous ep.

I know it's shocking but unless he's been lying about his age since his teens, he's really 32.

I think the druggie will probably try to scam the family of the girl who kidnapped in the episode and they will turn him in and then the cancer lady will probably reveal that the druggie to scam her too.

I admit I laughed when she chased after Freddy or whatever his name is. The cancer lady Dawn and Mare sort of remind me of the main character and the police chief from Three Billboards Outside Ebbing MIssouri, but here the mom of the crime victim is the one with cancer and not the cop. Towards the end, I thought Dawn would have to Mare's house to apologize since she and others in the town believe Mare had a breakdown.

There was no money, she shredded up magazines and put them in the bag.
|by Anonymous||reply 585||Yesterday at 9:21 PM|
She didn't shred magazines; she shredded the extra unused posters of her missing daughter reward. The money she took from the register was kept in a separate bag, and she'll likely return it. I felt worse for her babysitter friend... having such a fuck-up addict for a relative... I'd be so embarrassed.
