HBO launched its new series set in the exburbs of a drab small town outside of Philly with a spot on dialect spouting Kate Winslet as a police detective hitting a wall in a dead end missing girl’s case only to be confronted with another young woman murdered a year later. Reviews seem good and it’s very atmospheric and true to Pennsylvania, although not a single WaWa was spotted in the first episode.
Mare of Easttown starring the transcendent Kate Winslet with Evan Peters, Jean Smart and Guy Pearce

Good so far. Liked the first episode.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | April 19, 2021 5:19 AM |
"Mare?" Why didn't they cast Sarah Jessica Parker?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | April 19, 2021 12:47 PM |
OK, some recaps cleared up for me that Mare’s grandson is not the son of her daughter, which was unclear or introduced in a blink and you miss it bit of dialogue. I was wondering why all these 13 year old girls were knocked up in this town. I guess she has a missing son, but then the kid must also have a missing mother as well to be living with his grandma.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | April 19, 2021 1:19 PM |
It sounds depressing. Not sure I need more depression in my life.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | April 19, 2021 1:48 PM |
R4 Some comparisons that drew me in were it’s similarities to Top of the Lake and True Detective (which I only saw the first season) which I found impressive and I’m not one to usually watch police procedurals and were drawn to them as I am to this. There is also something of Prime Suspect about it as well.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | April 19, 2021 2:25 PM |
I'll pass. I can't stand Evan Peters and whilst a like the other actors involved its not enough to make up for Peters.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | April 19, 2021 2:35 PM |
Peters doesn’t show up in the first episode, so I don’t yet have any idea of his performance. It’s just going to be nice to see him outside a Ryan Murphy production and see what he might actually have concerning acting chops.

I heard it described as like an American Happy Valley which seems pretty accurate so far.

Mare of Easttown: When you need a break from the dreary weather of gritty Danish crime shows.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | April 19, 2021 2:56 PM |
I thought it was good. Well acted and directed. I also did not get why she has a grandkid without parents. Kate Winslet looks like a hard heavy woman in her 50’s which is good for this character.

Can’t wait to see it as a suburban Phillyite. Dying to hear her accent.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | April 19, 2021 3:36 PM |
They really made sure to showcase the accent in the first episode, she says 'wudder.'
by Anonymous | reply 15 | April 19, 2021 3:38 PM |
r3 I had the same thought. WTF is going on in this town that everybody seems to get pregnant in 8th grade? Is it something in the water?
by Anonymous | reply 16 | April 19, 2021 7:14 PM |
So Mare had a son who died and her grandson is that son's child? Is that correct?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | April 19, 2021 7:17 PM |
I was confused about the grandson too, but the Vanity Fair podcast said he was her son's child and her son had killed himself, though I must have missed that part. They'd said they'd not seen any episodes in advance so I mustn't have been paying attention.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | April 19, 2021 7:19 PM |
Yes. Mare has the lesbian (?) daughter in the band. And the grandson is by a dead son.

Happy Valley was a brilliant show. If you haven't seen it, please check it out. It's a police drama but there's a lot of humor in it too and very poignant family dynamics. Sarah Lancashire and Siobahn Finneran were absolutely wonderful.

The NY Times gave this a bad review but all the comments here are reviving my interest.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | April 19, 2021 9:34 PM |
R36 my issue is that there are a LOT of characters introduced, and some of them weren’t great. Could’ve used a 2 hr pilot. Or saved a few for episode 2
by Anonymous | reply 37 | April 19, 2021 9:41 PM |
Haven't seen the NYT review but it's averaging 81% on Metacritic. It has a kind of British/European bleakness to it you don't often see in American dramas. I've seen it compared to Broadchurch, Happy Valley and The Killing.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | April 19, 2021 9:42 PM |
I enjoyed it. I like Evan Peters so I look forward to his character's introduction.

by Anonymous | reply 40 | April 20, 2021 12:49 AM |
R37 That’s what makes this a bit more sophisticated with expectations that unlike most American drivel people should be smart enough to keep up. Not to mention in a murder mystery you’ve got to plug in a lot of potential murders and red herrings before the death. Also, they did save the Evan Peters reveal for episode two.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | April 20, 2021 12:55 AM |
I usually like bleak but I don’t know if I’ll end up liking this or not. It’s definitely the most white trash show I’ve seen not set in the South.

r45 tv and movies do that all the time. They take a real-life town or city and either make it high class or low class when the actual area is just the opposite.

Kate Winslet is transcendent? As opposed to being cis-scendent? I guess Leo has that effect on some people.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | April 20, 2021 2:37 AM |
According to this article, the dead son was on the autism spectrum. Maybe, the mother of the grandson was also autistic and that may explain why Mare has custody.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | April 20, 2021 2:42 AM |
How many “detective in a bland drab small town where everyone has secrets investigates missing victims” television shows do we need?
by Anonymous | reply 52 | April 20, 2021 2:48 AM |
Thanks r51. Like a few others, I was unclear about exactly what was going on there.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | April 20, 2021 2:52 AM |
I think the point of the grandson being constantly mentioned is so that as each family member is introduced, you become keenly aware of the fact that there is no one there who is the parent of the grandson. And Mare's an unrelenting cunt through most of the episode, complaining to a woman with cancer and a missing daughter how she doesn't appreciate the passive aggressive use of a news team to get the local police to actually do something about it. Obviously she's a joyless bitch who has a tragedy in her past. I am sure she will tell us all about the tragedy of her son at some point while in bed with her new lover.
I lived in Central PA for a bit and it was the worst five years of my life. They definitely got the dreariness down perfectly. I could tell it was PA before I even read a review. Strangely, while the NYT may have panned it, The Guardian and a few other UK papers were breathless over it and Winslet's performance.
All that being said, I kind of liked this first ep and will tune in for more.

Yes, R64, the filming location for the discount store in Mannequin and wholesome small town in Girl, Interrupted is bleak, have you been to downtown York or Lancaster lately, or Harrisburg anytime for that matter?

R65: I'm not R64, but I live in Lancaster and go to York and Harrisburg often. My sister lives in York. Even more depressing than Mechanicsburg would be somewhere like Shamokin. Personally, to this Lancastrian's ear, at times the dialect was a little *too* much, like she was over-enunciating so people could clearly hear it.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | April 20, 2021 7:27 AM |
R56, do you mean "Easton"? There is no "Easttown," AFAIK.
BTW, Easton is not a suburb of Philly. It is a part of its own MSA, ABE, AKA Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton.

“Wawa was a big part of my life for well over a year,” Winslet said, adding that co-star Evan Peters became obsessed with the shop’s famous Gobbler sandwich.
Me too, Evan.

Ugh, Katie Bailey’s not going to turn out to be the mom of Mare’s grandson is she? They didn’t hold that back to make it a shocking reveal to the viewers since the town would already know, that would be a cheap shot to me. Would they have let her be the lead on the case if it was?
by Anonymous | reply 71 | April 20, 2021 3:42 PM |

Loved the first episode. I'm an unrepentant Anglophile and this series evokes the best of the British shows like Happy Valley, Unforgotten, etc. in which you meet a lot of characters and have to wait to see how they're all related to each other. Great writing and direction and beautifully cast.
Oh, and the women look like real people (Nicola Walker!), so I liked seeing Kate and the wonderful Julianne Nicholson (Mrs. Jonathan Cake in real life) and Jean Smart without plastic surgery and gobs of makeup.

Actually, the Brit show it most resembles is BROADCHURCH. Lots of suspects and subplots in a small town and, I have a feeling, by the time the murderer is discovered, it doesn't really matter. It's not really a whodunnit in that respect.

I’m thinking this is supposed to be Delco too. Which is why using Easttown is just totally wrong - even as a pseudonym Easttown is a wealthy semi-Main Line area that includes parts of Wayne. The Easttown schools district (Tredyffrin-Easttown) are top notch and the people generally well educated.
The accent is Delco. The setting is more like Bradley Cooper in Silver Lings Playbook - Havertown I think. Or Upper Darby/Glenolden/Clifton Heights (Tina Fey SNL skit)
by Anonymous | reply 100 | April 21, 2021 7:01 PM |
Why the Rolling Rock? I’m kind of thinking she has to be one of the better educated people in this town to be a detective. Maybe she went to school in Western PA and picked up a proclivity for it there, and in her own little way that makes her feel different and slightly escapist in that town where she is so weighed down by everything else? Who knew PA was so high up on the craft beer states?

Re: the name controversy: "Before we go any further: Yes, Easttown is in Chester County, not Delaware. Creator and executive producer Brad Ingelsby, who grew up in Berwyn, said he chose to place Mare there because “it sounded like such a generic town name.” But the town in the show is “sort of an amalgam,” he said. “It’s Coatesville, it’s Aston, it’s Drexel Hill.” Filming included locations in both counties as well as Philadelphia." From the Inquirer
And the lack of Yuengling, which I drank like water in college, may be a choice by the production because Yuengling endorsed the former President.

Kate Winslet also hasn't had excessive plastic surgery so she still looks like a real person and can play working-class characters. That's something actresses like Nicole Kidman or Julia Roberts couldn't do.
by Anonymous | reply 140 | April 24, 2021 11:15 PM |
Maybe I'm blind but Winslet doesn't look like she's had ANY plastic surgery. And if she had, wouldn't she have gotten ridden f those two disturbing warts under her nose?

Winslet probably gets minor things done like the fillers.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | April 25, 2021 3:33 AM |
I'm not even sure of the fillers. She's clearly put on a little weight and her face has filled out, too.
by Anonymous | reply 143 | April 25, 2021 3:39 AM |
Winslet still looks real. I don’t know if she’s had anything done, but if she has, it’s not glaringly obvious.
Poor Julianne Nicholson was very pretty when younger, but did too much to her lips. And she is one of those rare women who looks prettier with short hair. Like Halle Berry.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | April 25, 2021 2:48 PM |
I think Julianne Nicholson is wearing a purposefully unflattering and dated wig in the series. There was a little featurette after the first episode on "The making of..." that interviewed her and she looks much cuter with a short pixieish hairdo. Don't know about her lips....they look unchanged to me from her younger days.
by Anonymous | reply 145 | April 25, 2021 3:16 PM |
I think the show kind of does a good job with having Kate Winselt, Julianne Nicholson, and the character with cancer look like frumpy small town fraus who pretty much know they peaked in high school. I"m guessing there was drama between Mare and the cancer mom back in high school and the disappearance of the cancer mom's daughter only added to it.

I had a HS reunion a couple of years ago and wow if this isn't true! There were several people who looked so much different and older I was shocked, as we were in our thirties at the time. Crazy how some people's looks can change when they're still relatively young.

I thoroughly enjoyed Episode 2. All of the roles, down the smallest, are brilliantly cast, all the various mothers and the teenagers, especially.
But I have a question. The two brothers who Mare brought with her to tell the father about his daughter's murder....what is the brothers' relationship to the story? Why did she ask them to accompany her? Are they just friends of the father, or cousins? Or are we not supposed to know yet what their place in the town is about?
Maybe I'm putting more significance there than there is. I'm just not sure how those characters fit into the town's relationships.

[quote] I really liked Episode 1, the overall tone, the performances and where the story seems to be going, but, my God, the existence of those people is so depressing.
It shows quite how depressed people (socially and psychologically) can’t be bothered to groom beyond showering and how that bit of energy sapped out of them fucks their whole aesthetic - home furnishings, clothing hair. Like dye your hair or don’t, Mare, but pick a side and stick to it. Grow out your short hair, Julianne Nicholson, but you can wear a cute bob instead of a mullet during that growing out stage. These women are too tired.
The extra time and energy high self-esteem and a higher income bring have an exponential affect on appearance.
Some of it almost veers to poverty porn, though. The scene of Jean Smart mindlessly playing her iPad game was a bit not the nose. Likewise the dead girl microwaving Mac and Cheese for her father. Someone as vindictive as him would be pissed she didn’t at least in some ham and green onions and serve rolls on the side. The perceived respect of adding a 2 minutes more food prep time to a 90 second nuked meal means everything to men like that.

I go off into the deep end and guess it was the mother of the teen who went missing the year before in order to get the police fired up finding her daughter or whatever happened to her.
The guy played by Guy Pearce would be way too obvious (with him claiming to have moved only nine months ago, to give himself an alibi for not being around when the girl went missing the year before). Him playing cat and mouse with the local investigator would be way too on the nose.
by Anonymous | reply 182 | April 27, 2021 1:58 AM |
According to internet, Mare's ex-husband (played by Pam's dumb BF from the Office) is "Mark" Shaheen. I assumed "Frank Shaheen", the putative baby-daddy, was the dead by suicide autistic son. I am wrong?
by Anonymous | reply 183 | April 27, 2021 2:11 AM |
When did the son commit suicide again? Could he have been the murderer of the missing girl and mom covered it up?
I think the Guy Pearce character is doing some downlow research for his new book. He likely knew who Mare was when they met (in town for nine months and doesn't know the local legend?).
by Anonymous | reply 184 | April 27, 2021 2:16 AM |
[quote]When did the son commit suicide again?
Mare said it when she was talking to the doctor about the grandsons tics - two years he's been dead.
Also, according to the the Official HBO page and also IMDb, Frank Sheehan is the ex husband. The dead son's name is Kevin.
by Anonymous | reply 185 | April 27, 2021 2:32 AM |
I'm liking the theories here, but I have my eye on the Deacon Mark. It seemed kind of strange the way Mare's cousin was trying to suss out just how well he knew Erin. I think there is more to that story. Maybe after she got pregnant by Mare's ex, she confessed it to the priest. It seems like they are definitely heading towards Erin's murderer being tied to the woman's missing daughter, who was more than likely the first victim.
by Anonymous | reply 186 | April 27, 2021 2:38 AM |
I wonder if the victim called Mare's daughter a homophobic slur when they walked away from the mob and that's why the daughter let go and left the victim on her own? She doesn't seem to be happy with her recent girlfriend.

She was the town slut and they all shot loads into her, obviously.
by Anonymous | reply 194 | April 27, 2021 3:28 AM |
I think the baby daddy will be Mare's ex-husband. Erin was in love with him and they probably had the plan to have everyone think Dylan was the father because Frank would go to jail. In the first episode, it was mentioned that Erin and her father couldn't afford the baby's surgery or whatever. Erin tries to get Frank to give her the money and Frank's girlfriend overheard them talking. The girlfriend starts following Erin around and confronts her. She kills her Erin and takes off most of the clothes as a way of "shaming" Erin more in death.
by Anonymous | reply 195 | April 27, 2021 3:32 AM |
[quote]So who is supposed to be the babydaddy
Well, we don't really know for sure yet, but the girl who was Erin's bff said that she suspected Frank Sheehan to be, Mare's ex husband.
[quote]Is Mare's bff supposed to be an ex-cop? I wondered why that girl went to her house towards the end.
Perhaps because she felt more comfortable talking to Lori, who is Mare's closest friend, than actually going to the police where she would have to tell Mare to her face that she believed her ex husband was the father of the dead girl. I gather she felt a bit intimidated.
by Anonymous | reply 196 | April 27, 2021 3:37 AM |
Mare's ex husband is gross. I think it's the priest guy, or that Erin didn't get murdered, but lost consciousness after she got her ass beat. Although that doesn't account for her being found almost naked. Maybe one of Erin dad's friends knocked her up and she decided to tell, so he killed her.
by Anonymous | reply 197 | April 27, 2021 3:39 AM |
Well, the killer isn’t Guy Pearce because Mare was with him the whole night of the murder, wasn’t she? At the bar and fucking him at his house. Not sure what time she left his place, but I don’t think it’d track. Plus it seems like he’s gonna be serving some other purpose, plot-wise.
Damn, I’m already loving this show.

A previous poster asked why Mare asked the brothers, or cousins, to go with her when she broke the news to Erin's dad that she's dead. The mean girl who is now dating Erin's ex (Dylan) is Brianna.
We're to understand that Brianna is just one of those really nasty mean girls from poorer communities, but also that she is very jealous of Erin because Erin still had deep ties to Dylan because she had claimed Dylan had fathered her infant son. Erin had been trying to get Dylan to give more money for child support to take care of her baby boy's chronic infection.

Well, she came back to the party, but told him there would be no sex tonight! Perhaps there is a serial killer who only murders young woman when Mare gets fucked? It was probably a year since she had when Katie Bailey went missing. You watch, next time Guy Pearce fucks her Brianna or Drew’s mother is going to die or disappear. And either would be setting Mare up to be framed for it too. It will be a race for her to have an active sex life and save her daughter Siobhan in time. There will also be heartbreaking scene where Jean Smart body doubles for her daughter Mare and gets murdered in retaliation by the killer.

by Anonymous | reply 245 | April 28, 2021 1:53 AM |
Lol, @ R209, it was really late and I had typed out my sentence a few too many times -
[quote]where she would have to tell Mare to her face that she believed her ex husband was the father of the dead girl.
- "the dead girl's baby" is what it was meant to read. Obviously, it was typed in error, but by the time I noticed prime time was over. It's apparent by the rest of the post that I was referring to Frank being the babydaddy so no need for the hysteria.
The cousins to Erin's father - one being the husband to the Lori character, while the other younger one had a moment where the camera stayed with him, a look of doubt on his face. He knows something too, or is he involved. Maybe he's the guy going around peeping in people's windows. He did look sort of ferret-y. Was he the creeper that Mare saw stalking around the night Erin was killed?
Also, the father getting all emotional and screaming about his dead daughter - did anyone else get pissed at this scene? The guy treated his daughter like shit.
by Anonymous | reply 246 | April 28, 2021 3:20 AM |
That he treated her like shit and had hysterics on her death was written on purpose and may be an accurate characterisation of a sad broken dumb twat like he is.

It was hinted in the first episode that Erin's baby had put a strain on the household finances so that likely played into why the dad treated her like shit.

Those moles on Winslet’s face? I know many people in middle age who have those strange skin-coloured moles which are really bumps below the skin. I have always wondered if there way some way of surgically removing them. I don’t imagine it would be easy, because I think the surgeon would have to dig to get rid of them, and they can’t just be flicked off the surface like usual brown moles.
Anyone know?

[quote] 'Mare' is an ugly name. Its the name of a horse. It's a name as unappealing as Liam, Ewan and Rhys are ugly.
"Mare" is a nickname for "Mary," still the single most common name for women (in all its variants) in the Western world.

What kind of shitty town still celebrates one high school basketball game 30 years later? Jeezus these small-town bumfucks are depressing... The whole community is just sad. Evan Peters has never looked better though... this is the hottest he's ever been. Guy Pearce's hair is god awful. He had better not be the killer.... All of the men in this town are disgusting. I can see why Mare's daughter turned vagetarian.

Married with Children made fun of the trope of a guy hanging on to his glory days in high school. Towns are no different about hanging on to any kind of former glory when they have nothing to be proud of in the present.

R251, I have those, too. Haven’t seen about getting them removed because they’re not cancerous and insurance won’t pay unless they’re suspicious. I’m not Miss America so I don’t care that much.
Also, people with moles live longer. Something to do with telomeres.

Remember Erin told her father that the baby daddy was going to pay for the operation, which we all know was a bluff/lie. She was going to get that money somehow, though. Did she try to blackmail someone? Or do some kind of soft prostitution?
And I don’t know what kind of medical coverage would deny ear tubes to a baby if they’re medically necessary. Medicaid would pay for that. Maybe because it’s Pennsylvania?

I would guess those mole things might even have been put on Winslet's face artificially to de-glamorize her. She's otherwise so beautiful it would seem odd people weren't constantly saying, "You know, if you'd just put on a lipstick lipstick and rouge you'd be a knockout!"

Mare did clean up well when she went to that event.
It's almost a trope that small town people need, like, ten minutes to change from homeless looking to looking presentable. The show made a point that she worked late and had to rush home to get ready and still made it.

Suburban Philly is both sports crazed and stationary (I.e., a huge percentage never leave their hometowns). Believe me, obsessing about a high school championship 30 years later is perfectly normal. 50 year old guys will get together to celebrate the anniversary.
by Anonymous | reply 267 | April 28, 2021 7:27 PM |
I grew up in New Mexico and some towns would hold anniversary celebrations for past high school sports championships. A couple of years ago, a friend was telling me how her dad who played on a championship team went to a ceremony for the 50th anniversary of the championship.

I don't think nice guys would put up with her since she does seem a bit rough around the edges or at least aloof. Like the way she treats Evan Peters' character when they first meet.

I wouldn't be surprised if Winslet picks up her second Emmy and 5th Golden Globe.
She's also a producer. Do producers get trophies when a show wins best x show, or is that only for the creator(s)?
by Anonymous | reply 275 | April 28, 2021 9:01 PM |
Idk about that... Golden Globe, sure, but even Amy Adams couldn't win the Emmy for Sharp Objects. Don't think Winslet will be a definite lock either; her performance so far has just been... perfunctory? Even her big emotional scene with the school counselor discussing her son's suicide and ticks. We'll see who she's up against and how competitive the field will be.

I lived in Central PA for about six years, 3 hours from Pittsburgh (lived there, too). Winslet nails the accent, for sure. There is a moment when she is trying to leave the party and Guy Pearce's character comes running out to talk her into staying. And she's lamenting how he just left her standing there like an asshole and she simply says, "Come on, man" that felt so real. I was thinking the same.

So who just watched ep 3? That baby's looking pretty sus to me at the moment. Doesn't seem upset at all that his mother's been murdered.
by Anonymous | reply 327 | May 3, 2021 3:36 AM |
[quote]I'm liking the theories here, but I have my eye on the Deacon Mark. It seemed kind of strange the way Mare's cousin was trying to suss out just how well he knew Erin. I think there is more to that story.
Told ya, bitches. So maybe the kid is the deacon's? He dumped her bike, but I feel like the fact that we saw him doing so this early means he didn't actually kill her.
I couldn't understand a lot of what he was saying, but Evan Peters did a nice job at the bar playing drunk. For a second there, I thought the camera was going to cut to them in her truck hooking up. Now that Mare is on leave, will Zabel try to keep working with her?
by Anonymous | reply 328 | May 3, 2021 3:36 AM |
Did anyone else get some vibes that something wasn't right with Zabel's story of solving the missing girl case? Especially because he seemed like kind of a dolt when they were canvassing the park. Like he's too much of a rookie to have made a case like that all on his own.
I will say, kudos to Peters for the way he made his delco accent stronger while drunk. Whether or not that was his own acting choice, it was a real nice touch.
by Anonymous | reply 329 | May 3, 2021 3:40 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 333 | May 3, 2021 4:15 AM |
Well, the no rape opens it up to female murders despite Mare thinking a woman wouldn’t be able to move the body. I think the deacon is a red herring and maybe he’ll actually be hiding that he’s gay and that’s what he’s being suspicious about, maybe even being involved with Mare’s cousin. I think Erin came to him that night for solace, but left her bike behind and he panicked.
by Anonymous | reply 334 | May 3, 2021 4:19 AM |
Yes! R334, I really like that theory. Maybe that would explain why Mare's cousin had him transferred from his old parish?
by Anonymous | reply 335 | May 3, 2021 4:21 AM |
The no rape also opens it up to potentially being an accident. Like maybe that tweaker Freddie from the 1st episode (who made another guest appearance this week). Maybe he comes across whoever Erin's with in the park and tries to hustle them for fix money and starts shooting. If she was with the deacon or the priest and they were doing something improper (or were just worried it would look that way), maybe they panicked and stripped her (to get rid of evidence) and then dumped her body. Having it all turn out to be just a random tragic accident after turning the whole town upside down and unearthing everyone's skeletons in the process would be the best non-twist twist.

Usually the murderer never gets revealed in the first few episodes. Instead, sordid secrets get revealed about the suspects who are not the murderer like them getting checked off the suspect list. I imagine the show's main focus will be how a murder investigation reveals all kinds of secret in a town that may have something to do with the suspects' relationship with the victim.

Still loving the series! Like Broadchurch, Happy Valley, Unforgotten and other great Brit series, this one has such interesting character development and subplots that, in the end, the solution of the whodunnit, could be almost besides the point of the enjoyment of watching.

Guy Pearce would look 100% better with a simple old fashioned haircut. But I think the ragged look he's sporting is perhaps better for the character.....less glam, more real guy.
And for those questioning why there are no fat actors playing white trash in this? Did you watch those scenes of Kate Winslet tromping around in her tee shirt and too tight jeans last night?

I watch so much British TV in Australia and those those are markedly some of the very few good British TV shows, and not even all the seasons of the above were great. Most of even the high-end BBC output is utter shit with the marked exception of the excellent acting. The writing tends to be more faddish than what American TV and the direction is downright terrible.

I had my issues with the episode last night. Mare framing her with drugs from evidence just seemed so sloppy. I mean like her boss said the image on them alone was distinctive. Mare is a lot of things but dumb isn't one of them.
I thought it was the weakest written of the first three.
by Anonymous | reply 357 | May 3, 2021 4:06 PM |

I believe the Deacon is definitely involved. He is slimy. This is a cat & mouse game plot device. But the victim was shot twice. Deacon wasn't the guy who shot the victim. That is not a plausible plotline.

Love the series but was it really necessary to cast 2 non-Americans, Guy Pearce and James McArdle as leads? There are 100s of American actors with just as much talent and even name recognition for those roles. Kate, of course, I get....and she's terrific.
by Anonymous | reply 360 | May 3, 2021 4:58 PM |
The murderous baby-daddy-deacon plot line is straight out of "Grantchester."
I'm not familiar with Evan Peters' prior work, but his "Mare" bar scene alone certainly deserves a nomination come Emmy season. The secret to playing a drunk is not to act as though intoxicated, but to interpret the process of trying to appear sober.

It's a good series, engrossing and riveting. Kate Winslet really is a fine actor. One forgets it's her. Guy Pearce and Jean Smart really become their characters, good writing. Mare's son took his own life, his son lives with Mare. The mother of that child wants custody of him.

R366: WHET the Chris Brody character from "Homeland?" His father Nicholas was a ginger, and Chris' sister Dana was last seen working as a motel maid. Did Chris wind up moving to Easttown?

Glad to see IMDB was wrong and Jack Mulhern is in more episodes than two (updated to three episodes - WFT? Is the site adding episodes after they aired?). For a second I thought Dylan would try to kill the baby when he asked for it.

R369 updating the cast list after episodes air seems perfectly fine, especially for a mystery show. If you know how many episodes an actor will appear beforehand, takes some of the mystery out
by Anonymous | reply 374 | May 3, 2021 6:23 PM |
r374, that is true. However, I find it odd that they do that with minor characters and not, say, the lead making it look like she could be in peril. Maybe it's about keeping a mystery about the whodunit?

It's very common for actors to have a few little nips before doing a drunk scene. They don't get drunk, they just get enough booze in them to make it more believable to appear drunk.

It’s not beyond the realm of possibility that Mare (keep wanting to call her Madge) would steal the drugs.
When emotional, on multiple occasions times become aggressive and reckless and nasty, so adding stupid to the mix isn’t a stretch.
In line at the basketball game, the restaurant arrest, ignoring the request for a lawyer, lying to her grandson about the custody, verbally abusing her mother in front of Julianne, charging over to her ex’s house to scream at him in front of company, storming out of the literary party, treating her daughter like shit, fighting in the street with that father father of the girl she arrested.
This is early-00s era Elliot Stabler behaviour we are dealing with.

[quote Can any Catholics explain the professional relationship of Deacon to Priest? Not that it's probably important to plot but I'm just trying to figure out Mare's cousin's place in their church vis a vis the Deacon.
I was raised Catholic and my parents have/had friends who are/were Catholic deacons. Catholic deacons are like assistant ministers to priests. But, deacons can be married and they don't wear collars. They can perform baptism and funeral services. I can't recall if deacons can perform weddings. Catholic deacons typically don't live with priests in rectories. Most of the deacons my parents knew/know have/had jobs outside the church unless they are/were retired from other jobs.

r381, thanks for the explanation of a Catholic deacon. I was a little confused because there's something about the way the deacon here is portrayed (and maybe costumed?) that makes him appear more important than and above the character of the priest.
And yes, why did Mare delete the cam footage from the crabby neighbor's surveillance?
by Anonymous | reply 383 | May 3, 2021 9:39 PM |
R383 Could it have been her daughter who did it?
by Anonymous | reply 384 | May 3, 2021 9:44 PM |
R383 I am also riveted by that scene. At first I thought maybe they just included it to establish that Mare is the kind of cop willing to bend the rules to get what she wants (which at that moment could have just been to not have to deal with that silly yenta anymore that day when she had bigger fish to fry with Carrie). But considering "the prowler" was the very first storyline introduced in the show, and that they haven't dropped it yet, makes me think there's a lot more to it, and in fact may be the key to breaking the case. I have a feeling with this show that every character, every action, every line of dialog MEANS something... that there aren't a whole lot of throway choices here, and I appreciate that.
R384 While I don't think Siobhan did the deed, I do think she knows more than she's letting on. Either that or it turns out that Kevin is DJ's real father, and that she ends up being the one to make that discovery as she explores his suicide further via her documentary. Remember how when she was editing it at the end she wondered out loud who he might have been with him when he died, and also that he mentioned someone in the last message he left her but she couldn't make out who because it was cut off? And maybe we find out that she confided that to Frank, which is why he felt compelled to help with the baby. When he's explaining to Mare why the hell he'd even get involved with Erin and her baby he said it was because of the suicide. The timeline would line up. Kevin will have been dead for two years at the end of February and when we first meet Erin, it's the beginning of January and DJ is a little over a year old.

Some Datalounger posted that whoever was in charged of launching HBO Max was fired. Good. This is the most fucked up streaming interface I have encountered. On this series, when I hit play, I am never returned to spot where I paused viewing. I had to stop in the middle of episode 3. When I tried to resume, it started playing the fight scene from episode 1. I hit pause, and the episode title indicated it was on episode 3. WTF? I thought maybe this was some other aspect of the fight, so I kept watching. No, it was episode 1. I had to keep fucking with the remote control to finally get back to episode 3.

by Anonymous | reply 395 | May 3, 2021 11:28 PM |
R395 It’s more satisfying/intense for a murder mystery to be weekly and not having the instantaneous fix of loading another episode right away and it’s making for great discussion and speculation here as well. It also feel like it’s happening in real-time too, seven weeks of slogging through the case to arrive at an outcome.
by Anonymous | reply 396 | May 3, 2021 11:36 PM |
I like that you get a week to stew on it and rethink everything.
One thing that struck me is that when John and his brother find Erin's dad by the creek, he is passed out on the rocks posed almost exactly the way his daughter was found. That seemed intentional. As far as we know, her father did not see the location where she was found. I think there is still more to that story. The dad was so intent on killing the babydaddy, so convinced he killed her, without any proof. It felt like he was projecting onto the kid for his own feelings of guilt. Maybe just guilt for being a shitty dad, but I think there's more to it.
Also, who exactly found DJ? They were out in the middle of the woods. It does seem awfully lucky that someone just happened to be on hand to find him and bring him to a hospital shortly after he was shot.
by Anonymous | reply 397 | May 3, 2021 11:37 PM |

R397 Oh there's DEFINITELY something to that pose. Because yes, as far as we know, he was not shown crime photos. Her death pose is also remarkably similar to the pose we first see her in when she's lying in her bed rambling on to the baby.
I assumed it was Kenny's two cousins that found Dylan's body--that they went looking for him after Kenny confessed to shooting him.
by Anonymous | reply 399 | May 3, 2021 11:41 PM |

I can't believe some people want this to be a binge 🤨. Not releasing everything at once is what make shows have an impact. Even Amazon stopped doing the Netflix model. Notice how the Boys and Invincible got weekly releases. Disney+ never even considered it. The Netflix model sucks for a show.

by Anonymous | reply 405 | May 4, 2021 12:07 AM |
Yes, watched it again and Dylan was luck in that he was found/brought in to the hospital very early, so it wasn’t Erin’s dad’s cousins who found him, it really had to be someone who was following Erin’s dad that night. I would think possible the real killer.
by Anonymous | reply 406 | May 4, 2021 1:20 AM |
I have to agree with other posters. While I do love, love, love the binge appeal of Netflix's original shows, I very much miss discussing each episode with others who like the show. A discussion about a Netflix show is about the entire season and comes down to what did you like best overall instead of going down to the nitty-gritty of each episode.

Kenny's cousins - Billy seems nervous and twitchy. I still have my eye on him. If he's not involved with Erin's death, he might definitely be involved in the missing girl's case.
[quote]Did Evan's character hit on Mare in that drunken bar scene? I was, like, WTF? Of all the women in town he goes for his cold and distant colleague?
He admires this woman, and is impressed by her. As noted in the Vulture article from Joanna Robinson at R342's link, Peters wanted to play Zabel as eager to please Mare. So while the flirting probably only happened because he was very drunk, it was partially born out of that desire to please her, as much as it was not wanting to feel shitty anymore.

I am loving this show, and can hardly wait for episode 4. You guys have come up with some pretty good theories.
I keep thinking of the way Mare described the girl that is missing: will never be found, a drugged-out mess, etc.. Just the kind of person her son Kevin would spend time with. That's the direction I believe it's heading. Maybe not; it's fun speculating.
And if nothing else, I have learned of a band called Mannequin Pussy.

Kevin died two years ago, the first girl disappeared one year ago and now this happens. What if they are all connected and this is a serial thing happening on an annual date? Also, is the anniversary of the basketball championship this date? Do we know, might Erin’s mother have been another player on the team, we saw that there were quite a few of them missing. Maybe someone is targeting the children of the players each year?

by Anonymous | reply 422 | May 4, 2021 6:47 AM |
R415 I think that may be exactly the reason why Mare wasn't able to fully immerse herself in Katie's case, for the same reason that has always detached herself from Kevin's. It's the one blind spot she has that's hindering her detective work. My theory is that we'll eventually find out that baby DJ is Kevin's son (conceived right around the time of his suicide). Maybe that was the reason he ran out of the house in such a hurry--because Erin was sharing the news of her pregnancy with him. This could be revealed when they receive the results of Frank's paternity test, which would show a familial relation. The show may end with Mare taking in baby DJ to raise after losing the custody battle with Carrie, and getting a second chance at motherhood.
I am also suspecting more and more that Erin's death will turn out to just be a tragic accident or manslaughter at most, and that the real purpose of the show is to explore the ways that intergenerational secrets and un-processed traumas have torn apart all the families of Easttown, and how the only way to repair them is to unearth all the skeletons. Forcing Mare to temporarily surrender her badge and receive counseling to unpack the trauma of losing her son (and effectively her role as a mother entirely or even respected member of the Sheehan family) so that she can be a better detective and finally crack both Erin and Katie's cases.
I also have a theory that Richard is the father of one of the characters we've already met and also that he may be clandestinely writing a new book about Mare, true crime, and the opioid crisis in her town. The title? "Mare of Easttown".
by Anonymous | reply 423 | May 4, 2021 8:34 AM |
Based on the article about the show I read in The New Yorker the other day, which is very positive and praises the show as a character study as well as the performances, the actual crime aspect of it was described as "rather mundane" (or something to that effect), so I don't think it's going to be that complicated.

Yes R431/R432, and Richard also shared with Mare at their fancy restaurant date this week that he had a child with a woman many years ago but was a selfish prick of a father so she took the kid away and he hasn't seen it since. The thing is Guy Pearce is too big a name to provide nothing more to the storyline than a casual shag for Mare, especially since he's way out of her league--reason tells us he must be there to ultimately serve as some kind of momentous foil. Which means he's either the killer (too obvs, too snore), or they made him a writer for a reason and he's somehow mining her life/Easttown for a story. And because the failures of parenthood is such an overriding theme, his relationship with his estranged kid is guaranteed to play a bigger role in the story.

I could see him as a glorified plot device of Mare opening up to him about personal things she wouldn't be sharing with any of the townsfolk. Especially with relatives like her mother, her kids, or her ex-husband.
I think that in itself could be interesting. The cold and distant Mare showing vulnerability at some point. And then terrified of that moment of weakness being used against her.
by Anonymous | reply 436 | May 4, 2021 7:18 PM |
r434 He said he now has a good relationship with his kid.
I think most of Guy Pearce's role was probably filmed after the Covid delay since he replaced another actor. A lot of actors just want to work so we're going to see a lot of names taking smaller roles. We've seen it with some upcoming films that have really stacked casts. Plus, he and Kate are friends and she probably asked/suggested him for the role. So I think r436 is right and he's just a vessel for Mare to tell her backstory.

There’s lots of chatter about MoE here, but also everywhere else, yet it’s not listed a s potential Best Drama Emmy here. Pose and Handmaid’s is, so it should be eligible as well, any ideas why it wouldn’t be?
by Anonymous | reply 464 | May 8, 2021 1:11 AM |
How can it be considered for Emmys when they've only aired half of it? I realize that some industry people have seen all of it, but it would be presumptuous of the article to tout the show as a nominee yet.
by Anonymous | reply 465 | May 8, 2021 3:28 AM |
Variety and sites like Gold Derby will tout and do early Emmy predictions months before nominations are announced. The predictions at Gold Derby by the experts and editors can be hilarious at times because some of their early predictions about nominees never pan out.
by Anonymous | reply 466 | May 8, 2021 3:44 AM |
There’s been a lot of chatter on review sites about what the episode title means “Enter Number Two.” It struck me as a lyric and plugging it into Google you, of course, immediately get Gordon Lightfoot’s If You Could Read My Mind. The irony is the rest of the line “a movie queen to play the scene” which just sounds like an inside joke about Kate being on the show. I’m thinking it’s referring to drunk Kabel exposing his feeling and becoming another suitor to Mare in addition to Richard. Other key lines are “heroes often fail” and the mention of ghosts as well as other possible touchstones in the song which could relate to things in the show.

Not gonna lie, kind of hoping for ancillary murder or attempt for someone getting too close to figuring out who the murderer is tonight. What's the priest got to do? Seems like they're setting it up to make you think Mare's ex or the priest, or that guy driving around in a van is the priest.
by Anonymous | reply 480 | May 10, 2021 3:14 AM |
Is the Deacon is rounding up all the girls who decided to be prostitutes ? I don’t think he killed Erin though. OTOH, The guy in the van seems like a big guy. Guy Pearce has a more important role in all this.
by Anonymous | reply 481 | May 10, 2021 3:23 AM |
I think the deacon knows that Erin was going to turn to prostitution to pay for the baby's surgery, but convinced her not to go through with it.
by Anonymous | reply 482 | May 10, 2021 3:28 AM |
All this has to do with Drew's mom, Carrie She does have a similar "lifestyle" to Katie Bailey and the new missing girl. Crackhead, and willing to do anything for more drugs. Her and Becca are unhinged druggies.
by Anonymous | reply 483 | May 10, 2021 3:33 AM |
Carrie will probably end up being kidnapped by that guy and will end up rescued by Mare and the other cops. That will probably lead to Mare and Carrie coming to some kind of agreement about Drew.

I don't know why, but I got the sense that the guy who is kidnapping these women was Kenny, by his build. Is he currently in a jail cell for shooting Dylan while he awaits trial?
They are definitely painting the deacon as guilty, which is why I think he's not, and as another poster suggested was just trying to help Erin and talk her out of prostitution. And we still don't know who fathered DJ. I still think Frank is involved somehow, though, beyond merely buying some groceries for the girl.

There are too many characters for a mini series. It only makes sense if the they hope for a season 2.
This series is OK but not sure it improves on the European models. I feel zero tension and suspense, even though there are murders and teen prostitutes in horrible dark captivity.
It relies too much on backstory. There should be more tension built right into the characters interacting with each other. They don't interact enough.
It's pretty cliché.

Mare lives with her mother, too. Is it weird, though, that I didn't immediately think that about Colin? I assumed his mother was just over for dinner, ha ha. Then again, he was about to get married and then got the stuffing knocked out of him when she dropped him, so I could see him moving back in with his mother while he deals with his depression.
[quote]I lost my sympathy for Erin tonight. "Oh I'm gonna tell my boyfriend he's my baby's daddy because he has nice parents". What a fucking cunt.
Look at how bleak her situation. And I doubt she knew for sure who was really the father of her baby, but deemed Dylan's family her best option for her child. There was nothing said to indicate she set him up. I'm kind of starting to like Dylan. He has feelings for the baby even if its not his. And his parents are decent people.
Joanna Robinson obviously has a boner for Evan Peters at R519's Vanity Fair link. She is the worst writer, I don't know how she keeps her job. She allows all of her personal feelings for the actors/actresses to bleed into her reviews.
I found last night's episode to be the weakest so far. It just felt like filler for most of it. I didn't see the purpose of cancer mom's falling for an obvious ploy for money and then finding out she was set up by her bff's brother, beyond trying to flesh out her desperation. We didn't even get much of a therapy session for Mare this outing. I'm hoping things get back to business next week.

Even if young people aren’t practicing Catholics, being raised in that culture does a number on them.
I’ve never known anyone raised Catholic who didn’t have arrested development. The Church— like most religions— survives by infantilizing its followers and making them psychologically if not physically dependent on the Church.
Women are also encouraged to live through their children... so you have women who never want their kids to grow up.

R533 I thought her "take" and comeback at the family meeting.... "I don't know what to say..." pause "... oh I know what to say, what a fucked up thing to do!!" was hilarious. The mother/daughter relationship, funny and "real", is one of the best things, most amusing things about the show.

I admit I laughed when she chased after Freddy or whatever his name is. The cancer lady Dawn and Mare sort of remind me of the main character and the police chief from Three Billboards Outside Ebbing MIssouri, but here the mom of the crime victim is the one with cancer and not the cop. Towards the end, I thought Dawn would have to Mare's house to apologize since she and others in the town believe Mare had a breakdown.

I'm almost certain it's Lori's husband.

Who is Lori?!

R570, he does not look 18 in that pic... he looks 28 at least. He must have come out of the womb with a comb-over and crow's feet around his eyes...

Who knew Evan Peters could really act? They just had to get him away from Ryan Murphy first.

I’m not familiar with the accents they have on this show (I’m from the west coast), but I’m obsessed with how the letter “o” sounds with their accent. I’ve never heard it pronounced that way before!

I have friends from that area, as well as Maryland and they have the same accents.

I used to hear the Maryland version from blue collar types in DC when I lived there.

I felt so sorry last night for the character of Dawn. She is SO fucked after sealing that money she'll never get back, even if her daughter is returned to her.

I also think Lori's husband will turn out to be the kidnapper.

There was no money, she shredded up magazines and put them in the bag.
by Anonymous | reply 585 | May 11, 2021 5:21 AM |
She didn't shred magazines; she shredded the extra unused posters of her missing daughter reward. The money she took from the register was kept in a separate bag, and she'll likely return it. I felt worse for her babysitter friend... having such a fuck-up addict for a relative... I'd be so embarrassed.

"Lori" has multiple children also listed as characters and I can't picture this family at all. Who the fuck is Lori and her multiple children?
by Anonymous | reply 587 | May 11, 2021 5:25 AM |
This is Lori. She has the daughter with Down's and is Mare's close friend. You know that all you have to do for any show or movie is type the title into Google and the entire cast's photos are on the main page?
by Anonymous | reply 588 | May 11, 2021 5:36 AM |
For future reference - just scroll down a bit and the whole cast w/ their photos and character names are right here when you Google it.

I wouldn't be surprised if one crime (the abductions) is solved this season, and the other (the murders) left to extend into season two.

Mare's mother (Helen) knows the women of her family well. When Siobhan revealed that she had broken up with Becca, Helen asked her if she had met someone else.
