Who would have guessed that Brooklyn-born Barbara Joan Streisand would transform into a volleyball-playin, boogie-board ridin, Malibu Beach Barbra who rarely, if ever, leaves her surf-n-turf sand-in-her-toes lifestyle?
Has anyone taken a tour of her Malibu house?

Whenever an actor doubles as the director, like Barbra Streisand, David Boreanaz, Joseph Gordon Leavitt, the scene is actually being directed by the Director of Photography who is framing all of the shots.

Lovely and powerful voice (when she used it to its full advantage) but she's never come across as someone you'd want to spend time with. I think that goes a long way in keeping an artist relevant and working up until old age. She's at her best when she's tapping into her natural gift for comedy, but she always wants to shy away from it and be taken seriously. Not a good move.
She's left us with maybe 3 or 4 movies that are even worth a watch and have a chance of being remembered long after she's gone. When you think about it, it's kinda sad. She's rich and has everything she could possibly want materially, but as hard as she tried to be taken seriously, she never really has been.
Her career should be a lesson to all future performers - no matter how talented you are, you need a sense of humor for people to continue wanting to watch/listen to your work.

I watched "Yentl" last night again for the first time in decades. It still holds up very well. Barbra's in great voice, and while she's about 20 years too old for the role, she does pull it off, especially with some wonderful singing. To her credit, she doesn't glam herself, and allows Amy Irving to look truly beautiful, especially in comparison. Mandy Patinkin, while excellent on stage in "Evita", never was photographed or appeared anywhere I'm aware of, looking that good and coming off as so attractive as the way Barbra captured his Avigdor. But Barbra got pretty lazy after doing so much work on this film; yes, she directed the mostly successful "Prince of Tides" (though glamourizing herself too much in that) and the quite silly "Mirror Has Two Faces", but otherwise, she pretty much stopped acting in films. "The Main Event", those silly Focker movies where she took 4th billing, once unthinkable, and that one with Seth Rogen, among a few others in a fairly thin filmography past 1983, just aren't anywhere near the quality of "Funny Girl", "On a Clear Day", "Hello, Dolly" or "What's Up, Doc". She did recordings and started doing concerts selectively, but she could have worked a whole lot more had she wanted to.

I am a transplanted East Coaster living in Southern California. As much as I still love the East Coast (and I do go back to visit often), it's very difficult to leave the easier lifestyle of the West Coast and plan to live on the East Coast. It's not sunny and warm here everyday by any means. We do have rain; we even have cold damp winters. But overall, the climate is milder, and it's hard to leave an easier life for a tougher one. And as much as I love Boston, it's tougher than So. Cal.

Fleetwood Mac's "Songbird" was beautifully covered by Eva Cassidy (who I genuinely adore).

Buying a hot dog and pretzel in Central Park, linked arm-in-arm with the girls as they take Manhattan with cupcake selfies at Magnolia Bakery. Languid strolls along the Brooklyn Bridge, as she hums "Memories." An indication that there is still a little bit of the wise-cracking, no-nonsense ingenue songstress we all know and love.

Barbra belting to the rafters for two hours. That ridiculous scene where Richard Dreyfuss stumbles upon her high gloss cheesecake photos (which R7 provided an example of) which served no purpose than to show how sexy she was. Having to make her the hottest call girl in all of NYC.

...Instead, Barbra, Jon and I ran down to Miami.
“We’ll swing, we’ll spling, we’ll bing,” said Peters, who spoke an abbreviated jive talk all his own.
We flew down on a private CBS jet to where Barry was waiting. In a haze of herb, the song was cut in a blaze of enthusiasm. Gibb called it “Guilty.” Musically, he and Barbra were milk and honey. We had a smash. We took off a couple of days for high fun in the sun. Sitting around the pool, Peters never tired of telling me how he sexually satisfied Barbra. “When they say I have a silver tongue,” he explained, “they don’t know the half of it.”
...
Out in Malibu, I had recently witnessed a scene between Jon and Barbra that even I, a well-known disturber of the peace, found disturbing:
It was a beautiful afternoon on the California coast, seagulls fluttering, sandpipers scampering. I’d gone out to visit Barbra and Jon in their oceanfront digs. Sue Mengers, Barbra’s tough-talking agent, was also there. We sat on the deck, noshing on cheese, sipping wine, gossiping about show business. Then the fireworks exploded:
Barbra accused Sue of not showing her a script. Sue said she had shown her.
“If I had seen it, I would have taken the part,” Barbra insisted.
“You did see it,” said Jon.
“In the future, you’ll give me a written record of every submission. Do you have that straight?”
Thoroughly humiliated, Jon turned red with rage.
“Who the fuck are you to talk to me like that?” he screamed.
“Who the fuck are you to talk to me like that?” Barbra screamed back.
“You’re an ungrateful cunt,” he said.
The screaming went downhill from there. Barbra started to cry, stormed off, got in her car and drove away. Mengers and I, hardly innocents ourselves, looked at each other in disbelief. Compared to Streisand/Peters, I felt absolutely sane.

Don't be nutty R66. Streizand thought she owned time, Hollywood, her agents and HER hairdresser with DICK. She also thought she owned the public. She figured wrong. She had bad taste in everything and was a both a neurotic and narcissistic bitch. A common enough combo. Her ego flex is legendary. As is her bad taste and manners. Never has someone been given so much natural talent and done so little with it. She made dreck, because she had a pathological need to be seen as beautiful. Kooky. She is neither. A humorless human being with a cheap and ugly soul. She made one watchable movie and one remembered film. Three or four good albums out of 70. She withheld her greatest gift, because she wanted to be a movie star. When she became that, only bad properties were grand enough for her ENORMOUS fucking EGO. Barbaric Streizand is VILE.
Lucky for people under 50, they've never heard of her. She had a beautiful voice. But her ridiculous need to show off ruined most of her musical interpretations too. Oy. Can't stand her. My mother and grandmother can't stand her. I know a guy who fucked her once in the ass though. He liked Barbra - only from behind.

Not really, unless there's is something scared about a name spelled one way instead of another way.
[quote]Who would have guessed that Brooklyn-born Barbara Joan Streisand would transform into a volleyball-playin, boogie-board ridin, Malibu Beach Barbra who rarely, if ever, leaves her surf-n-turf sand-in-her-toes lifestyle?
Everyone would have "guessed" it since she's been living in LA for decades. So do many other celebrities who were born in New York and the east.

So Barbra says. In her usual way of thinking she's being charming when she's just being rude. Imagine having the hubris to tell another actor "I'm responsible for your career". Most other actors are more gracious. But that's never been Streisand's forte.
I can't picture Streisand doing They Shoot Horses or Klute as well as Fonda did anyway.

The waves hardly crash because those beaches are on a bay. Jamaica Bay, I think. The water is sometimes pretty filthy in Malibu, too, though there has been a big effort over the past few years to clean it up. There are numerous storm drains along that part of the coast that pollute the water and cause the infamous "surfer's flu" - which probably isn't flu.

I love Barbra Streisand from a distance.
Her music is too sappy and fluffy.
I remember trying to give the “Guilty Pleasures” album a try when it came out in 2005 and it still had these old keyboard sounds from the 80’s. It sounded like she was singing over cheap karaoke instrumentals that come for free on a CD when you buy the machine.

Not surprising at all OP
In a different life, where she had no singing or acting talents, Barbra and her husband, Dr. Richard Berkowitz, DDS, formerly of Roslyn, NY would be happily living in a condo somewhere near the ocean in Boca Raton or Boynton Beach, where she'd be in and around the water and walking her dogs every day too.

[quote]Additionally, Gene Kelly was one of the most unpopular egomaniacal assholes ever to work in Hollywood.
Gene Kelly and his wife, Betsy Blair, had an open house every weekend, in the 40s and 50s. It was packed with stars and creative people every week - Spencer Tracy, Van Johnson, Lena Horne, Greta Garbo, Hedy Lamarr, George Cukor, Richard Brooks, Sinatra, Garland, Comden & Green, Martin & Blane, Harold Arlen, Oscar Levant, Keenan Wynn, Leslie Caron, etc. So that's very odd if someone was as unpopular and as much of an asshole as you say. It doesn't make sense.
by Anonymous | reply 152 | October 3, 2021 2:57 PM |
Oh, boy, R152, you're missing a lot.
Kelly's parties were the liberal New York group - actors and performers with something politically in common. Lena Horne, Arthur Laurents and Farley Granger bonded over their hatred of Gene Kelly, they were there to suck up. In the post war era of the late 1940s, Kelly held massive power at MGM. Notice, he wasn't Backlisted, his wife Betsy Blair was.
My favorite story about Kelly at these parties is how he broke his ankle and subsequently had to withdraw from Easter Parade. Kelly required that his Sunday guests participate in very competitive volleyball games. Most were enjoying an afternoon of drinking and were not interested or equipped to playing the way Kelly wanted. After one aborted match, Kelly threw a tantrum of such intensity - stamping his foot repeatedly on pavement - that his ankle snapped. The tantrums were typical, injuries were not except for this one.

Barbra must be seriously damaged to have been in a relationship with Jon Peters for a whole decade. I'm sure she enjoyed the success and money he brought her, but they were so toxic together.
I love her for her legendary talent, but she is the epitome of fucked-up Hollywood, like Warren, Jack and Ryan O'Neal.
by Anonymous | reply 154 | October 3, 2021 4:03 PM |
Jon Peters didn't take her crap, which she admired. A lot of these celebrities are so used to ass kissers and people who fawn over them that they actually are flattered when someone just doesn't care about them or treats them like everyone else. Almost masochistic in its own way.
Streisand went for an appointment at Peters hair salon and showed up late. Jon berated her and told her she was thoughtless and rude. As Barbra walked out, Peters complimented her on her "hot ass". Barbra was oddly intrigued and called him back to apologize. A few weeks later they were a serious item.
by Anonymous | reply 155 | October 3, 2021 4:29 PM |
R153 Not saying Gene didn't have a temper, that was known. But you could spin it a lot of ways, in fact I assumed you'd say people went to his parties to suck up, but that's ridiculous. There were bigger stars than him at his open houses. He has often been described as "charming"and with a "zany sense of humor". You oibviously have an axe to grind, but if someone is unpopular, people don't flock to their home every weekend to socialize. If it was that bad, they wouldn't come. These were big stars, they could do what they wanted. Dore Scary, the head of the studio, went, too. As for blacklisting, Gene was not a Communist, Betsy was.

R153, Streisand and Peters were a couple for six-seven years, and that's a stretch. Not a decade, and certainly not 1974 to 1985 as they tell it today. I hade to live through this shit as a Streisand fan in the 70s, and it wasn't pretty.
Make no mistake about it, the Jon Peters relationship had as much to do with youth as everything else. She wanted to be younger, to be seen as younger, and Peters, ignorant and barely literate, egged her on. THAT'S why she let him take control of her career. He referred to Fanny Brice as "someone's mother-in-law." I don't think Barbra would have played a rock singer in A Star is Born if it weren't for Peters.

Gene Kelly's parties were more like a cook-out. Down to earth, they served simple food, they didn't dress up. Cukor's parties were not drop-in, as far as I know, and were more elegant. Maybe not the gay parties, but his "regulation" parties.
This is a very pro-Kelly post and most of it is from fan magazine articles, so can be taken with a grain of salt, but probably containing truth also. Gives you an idea of his parties.

I think she said on Actors Studio that she did ASIB to help break him into the industry. That's one of the movies along with What's up Doc and Funny Lady that she really doesn't care to talk about much, despite it winning her an oscar.
The press for that movie was brutal, and it shows how big a star Streisand was at the time that she was able to overcome all of that. Other actresses would have been would have been blackballed for the Frank Pierson article alone.

Jon and Barbra had Marlon Brandon onboard, according to Peirson:
Jon said, "He was right here! He was cute! The son of a bitch, he wanted to fuck Barbra--I was ready to kill him! I take him off, and I kiss him! He was beautiful! Right here! I love him, the bastard! They'd make a great pair. Imagine. Streisand and Brando!"

[quote]He (Peters) made millions after he dumped Barbra
He didn't dump her, he ran around on her. Liz Smith caught him at Studio 54 or some such place with another woman. There's a TV interview after they separated where Peters indicates he'd like to patch up the relationship, and wisely, Streisand was through. However, she did use him to get financing for Prince of Tides when he was at Columbia. But, Jesus, what a fucking fool she was. Can't wait to read the excuses in her autobiography.

[quote]Frank PIERSON was as much an asshole. He had an agenda and lied quite a bit in that article.
What did he lie about?
The making of that movie was a fiasco. The press party that wound up with Kristofferson and Peters coming to blows. There's also that story that the scene where she gets thrown in mud was not mud but watered down horse shit deliberately put there by the crew.
by Anonymous | reply 174 | October 3, 2021 10:31 PM |
I haven't read the entire article since it came out, R174, but a few things stuck out. One, Pierson goes on about an engineer named Al Schmit and how much he's going to cost to record the soundtrack. Streisand's recording contract and who they have to engineer the soundtrack had nothing to do with Frank Pierson, it's between Streisand and Columbia Records. Pierson places himself and his evaluation and judgement where they did not belong, are not part of his duties.
Then he claims the rug was ripped out. His agenda was to remove himself from the movie on a level where he wont be blamed for this turkey that came in on budget and ahead of schedule. No question that the movie shits, how much of that is Pierson's fault or Streisand's fault...well, I have questions. Pierson's horseshit story is hard to believe. If he was behind it (and it was blamed on the crew as you said), he'd never work in Hollywood again.
