Marvel Comics Introduces A Gay Captain America For June 2021
Marvel Comics has unveiled a new hero that will become the latest version of Captain America, as The United States of Captain America will introduce Aaron Fischer, a gay teenager who will wield the shield. The series will see everyday people from across the United States become Captain America, and the first issue will showcase the new Marvel hero.

Has tattoo sleeves and a nose-ring no less.

Lord.

Comic books need to do.a better job of creating new characters that reflect different demographics than retconning existing ones.

I've been a Marvel reader for decades. In the 70's they were able to create a new team of X-Men (to great success) by creating new characters (and "retiring" old ones) and they were from all over the world. The New Mutants as well produced multiple characters that weren't straight and white, and those characters are still kicking today.

It is the lazy way out "re-casting" these characters and I'm not a fan.

by Anonymousreply 2March 15, 2021 11:42 PM

Oh it’s coming, R1.

I’m surprised he’s not “queer”. Hmm.

by Anonymousreply 3March 15, 2021 11:42 PM

Why are Marvel catering the woke when they doesn't watch Marvel at all. People who watch anything done by Marvel are straight dude.

by Anonymousreply 4March 15, 2021 11:44 PM

Yeah. I see a lot of people upset about this online

by Anonymousreply 5March 15, 2021 11:46 PM

Straight white males are like 90% of the comics audience.

by Anonymousreply 6March 15, 2021 11:50 PM

? I'm a gay man and I've been reading them for decades R4, and I know I'm not alone.

I think the real divide with comic books is between men and women. I've been to conventions, etc. It is at least 75% male.

by Anonymousreply 7March 15, 2021 11:50 PM

Shouldn’t gay Captain America just look like the straight one?? Cap would definitely be a top.

by Anonymousreply 8March 15, 2021 11:54 PM

Top or bottom?

by Anonymousreply 9March 15, 2021 11:54 PM

Can you post a link R5? I want to read what they say.

by Anonymousreply 10March 15, 2021 11:54 PM

Ms. Marvel (not Captain) is a good example of a new character that has gotten traction. She is a Muslim, teenage girl. Her book is fairly popular.

Marvel really needs to put in the time (page time/presence) on these new characters to allow them to gain popularity, and this is a process than can take years. How long was Wolverine a character before all the love happened? 20+ years?

by Anonymousreply 11March 15, 2021 11:59 PM

YASSSS KWEEN!

Oh, dear and they do. The queer community is a HUGE demographic for the comic book industry.
Straight white males are like 90% of the comics audience.

Nope.

by Anonymousreply 16March 16, 2021 12:32 AM

Actually, a lot of people did want a gay Captain America.

by Anonymousreply 17March 16, 2021 12:32 AM

Yes they are r16. Comic audiences are overwhelmingly straight and male.

by Anonymousreply 18March 16, 2021 12:34 AM

"Aaron Fischer"

Sounds very "New York" if you catch my drift.

They're taking over everything.

by Anonymousreply 19March 16, 2021 12:38 AM
retconning existing ones

It's not a retcon, it's apparently about a series of different people who temporarily use the shield. Could be a neat idea. Wasn't there a Superman story along those lines, about different people wearing the cape?

by Anonymousreply 20March 16, 2021 12:48 AM

It doesn't make sense that they all automatically inherit the rank of Captain. Will be they even be military? How about rotating ranks and branches and redesigning the suit to match? I'd love to see a Seamen America in form-fitting Navy whites or even a large, burly young, dumb, hung and full of cum private jarhead in a tight khaki-colored suit. A flying Airman America would be great too.

I'll bet.

by Anonymousreply 24March 16, 2021 1:39 PM
It doesn't make sense that they all automatically inherit the rank of Captain.

The original Captain America in 1941 didn't work his way up to the rank of captain.

by Anonymousreply 25March 16, 2021 1:44 PM

Why do people here think gay men and women aren't into comics (and anime, fantasy novels and video games)? Yeah perhaps the largest demo is straight men but there have always been comics that catered to gay and lesbians and women. In the 80s and 90s there was a wave of alternative comics that appealed to adults like the Sandman series, Constantine, The Crow, Watchman, Fables, Hellboy, Frank Miller's Batman and Sin City and they featured or starred many gay/bisexual male and female protagonists. Same with video games and anime, they always had a countercultural element and appealed to people who didn't exactly fit in. Many gays are nerds and were into the internet during its early days as a form of communication since mainstream society wasn't accepting and it was easier to meet others on message boards and fandoms. I'm a gay guy and I have always loved Batman comics and series like Hellboy, The Rocketeer, Sandman and X-Men. Since many of them feature outcasts I can relate to them plus some of the characters like Constantine and Nightwing are drawn very nice.

by Anonymousreply 26March 16, 2021 3:47 PM

Why isn't he built like a normal superhero. Why do all gay characters in comics have to be slender little twinks? Annoying.

Same problems with video games. It's NEVER the guy you want it to be. At least he doesn't look like a chick.

by Anonymousreply 27March 16, 2021 5:23 PM

Midnighter and Apollo aren't slender twinks, R27. Nor is Daken. While Northstar isn't built like the Hulk, he isn't a twink either. Actually Hulkling isn't slender, though I suppose he could be if he wanted to.

by Anonymousreply 28March 16, 2021 10:14 PM

Is the Hulk fit-fat?

by Anonymousreply 29March 16, 2021 11:20 PM

[bold]You idiot Datalounge twats are at it again[/bold]

He's NOT "The" Captain America. There's a link to an article at OP explaining the whole thing. But did you read that? No. You just got your pearls all clutched and started posting.

Here's the situation: Cap's shield goes missing so he and some others go cross country looking for it - while doing that they come across random people in various locales who've anointed themselves as their own "local" Captain America. They don't have powers or affiliations, they're just people using Captain America's vibe as a jumping off point to right wrongs in their specific community.

This is a limited run series with different "local Captains" encountered in each issue. This gay character is merely the first "local Captain" for the first issue of the series. Each "local Captain" is a probably just a one-off character.

So, chill out.

by Anonymousreply 30March 16, 2021 11:44 PM

He needs a tube top.

by Anonymousreply 31March 17, 2021 12:09 AM

Marvel makes their movies for China. There will NEVER be a gay superhero lead in a Marvel movie.

by Anonymousreply 32March 17, 2021 12:11 AM
Actually Hulkling isn't slender, though I suppose he could be if he wanted to.

Hulk "ling" i.e. the smaller diminutive version of the real straight male hulk. That's the PROBLEM.

by Anonymousreply 33March 17, 2021 1:13 AM

ISTR that artists started drawing Northstar brawnier after he came out. But then, not all artists have Byrne's ability to give different characters different body types.

by Anonymousreply 34March 17, 2021 12:16 PM

While we're somewhat on the subject, any Bronze Age comic fans (i.e. Elder Gays) ever get pings off Jim Shooter?

Well, the Bioware videogame MASS EFFECT 3 (2012) broke ground with a an arc where you can play the dark rugged and very-fit Cmdr. Shepard as a gay (or at least, male-attracted) man if you want to, with a choice between two male characters as suitors (Kaidan Alenko or Steve Cortez, neither of them twinks or even remotely nelly). The romance is treatwd very seriously and without crass jokes or tired angst, and via cutscenes you can see your playable couples kissing and making out naked in bed (not explicitly fucking, though). It is also possible to play as a female Shepard, and seduce a handful (albeit still small) number of female characters in the same way, though this is quite clearly only provided as titillation for male players.

Sadly, games that followed in the MASS EFFECT series removed this option in, despite positive feedback and popularity. In the latest, ME: ANDROMEDA, there is no official option for a gay male arc, unless you use and buy a patch that makes it possible to unlock just one romance (with the alien- male character Jaal).

That’s the only game franchise I can think of where that’s an explicit option, though, so mostly you’re right. Unless like me you count Jedi Knights as subtextually homosexual/romantic or whatever, and don’t mind using your imagination, then there’s several other games....

He's called Hulkling because he is younger than the Hulk. Some people will come up with any reason to be outraged, straight or gay.
Comic books need to do.a better job of creating new characters that reflect different demographics than retconning existing ones.

What?

Captain America like Captain Marvel are mantles now and have been for decades. They've made "Wolverine" the same thing as well.

Multiple people have held those titles.

And it has also been a thing for a while now that everyone that had had that name usually shares an appearance in a book at some point like the one they're doing here.

by Anonymousreply 49March 19, 2021 5:02 AM

Iceman's gayness was a retcon, obviously, but a pretty easy one to apply. In all his appearances up well into the 90s, he is portrayed as immature, unable to commit to relationships with women, and struggling to live up to the expectations of a bigoted father. When he "came out", I saw it as a natural development of his character.
