What card game were they playing?

[quote] So ... I just learned that this video that I shot in 1997 has become a topic of conversation on some discussion boards. To answer some questions that have popped up there - Yes, this video is real, not faked later to a videotape. You think we're that good of actors? Some people call this video the first of what are now called "reaction" videos, a term didn't exist in 1997 (and neither did YouTube). Why was I recording? I was trying out a new camcorder recording friends playing the card game UNO. Then my mom called me to say that Diana was in a car crash and to turn on the TV so I kept recording my friend's reactions. It was recorded in Iowa City, Iowa. All of the guys in the video are still alive today (as of today, March 12, 2021). Yes, we are all gay, so what. The guy who screams when he learns Diana has died is my friend Ken who lives in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It is his genuine reaction to the news of Diana's death. Some people call it a "Wilhelm scream." (Apparently that's a movie term). The guy who stifles a smile after the scream is Scott. (He smiled because of Ken's Wilhelm scream reaction) When CNN announced that Diana had died I didn't turn the camera back to the TV because I thought it was more interesting to capture my friends' reactions.
Scott is my fave.

OMG, we need them to do a Zoom reunion, R14! Great idea.
The person who recorded and posted the video to YouTube, obviously knows about DL. Hopefully he or one of his friends is reading this!

Most DLers would say they're a Scott or a John, but they're really a Ken, R17.

My ex would scream like that if he dropped something, was frightened, stubbed his toe, etc. It was totally real and totally embarrassing. And he was a big bear of a guy.
Once he was handing me the food from a drive-in window and spilt one of the drinks: "WhuhOHAAGGGHHH!!", then he grabbed at his chest like he was experiencing angina or something. The look on the fast food girl's face was priceless (surprise/disgust/bemusement).

It’s hard to convey how shocking it was when Diana died. In the mid 90s, it seemed like everything had played out. The Gingrich revolution, Diana’s death, W’s election grab, and 9/11 were jolting. Now we just accept the shittiness of the US and the world.

[quote]r31 It’s hard to convey how shocking it was when Diana died.
I personally didn’t find it shocking (though I’m admittedly a bit emotionally detached.) She was just a celebrity. I was kind of surprised friends and family cried. Inside I was like, “Did you KNOW her? She didn’t know YOU.”
Clearly I was in the minority, however.

[quote]I personally didn’t find it shocking (though I’m admittedly a bit emotionally detached.) She was just a celebrity. I was kind of surprised friends and family cried.
Diana was the most famous person in the world after the Queen, and the kind of fame she had does not exist today. She had a real connection with people in a way that very, very few public figures have ever had. She was EVERYWHERE, not a week went by when you didn't hear something about Diana.
I was 20 years old at the time and I couldn't remember a time when Diana wasn't famous, she'd always been around, a constant presence. It was surreal when she died.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | March 14, 2021 7:30 PM |
I think celebrities a la Diana can no longer exist in a world with social media.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | March 14, 2021 7:34 PM |
I think Princess Diana's death was especially poignant for Gen Xers. We all remember where we were and what we were doing when we heard. Most of us were too young to remember the deaths of Elvis or John Lennon. The Boomers had Kennedy, while we all grew up with Lady Di.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | March 14, 2021 7:35 PM |
true r65. Nobody could be that famous or have such a connection with the public today.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | March 14, 2021 7:36 PM |
Definitely r66. I was born in '76 and Diana's death was the most shocking death of a public figure for our age group. We were too young to remember Elvis and Lennon, and they were also of a different generation. Diana was someone we grew up with and was part of the times we lived in. She was a very contemporary figure, not someone who peaked before we were born.

This is like the Criterion Collection release of this seminal film!
It just needs a 4K Blu-Ray restoration, a reunion of the principals at the Paley Center and a specially branded deck of UNO cards.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | March 15, 2021 1:01 AM |
I'd totally have had sex with Ken that night.

Does anyone still live in the "fabulous" house in Raleigh-Durham (probably some tract house with ugly finishes). I remember being in Singapore airport when this was announced my reaction was a bit different---literally killed by the publicity she was always seeking. By then, Di was no longer so sympathetic---I mean dating someone from a slimey finance family. that owned touristy-trappy Harrod's. and the Brits were unhappy that he wasn't "English".
by Anonymous | reply 81 | March 15, 2021 2:59 AM |

It’s funny how Ken asks if what he said is on tape and follows it up with “that’s how I’ll be remembered.” Just a few seconds later he lets out that scream and we are left with his true legacy.

by Anonymous | reply 84 | March 15, 2021 12:53 PM |
People who are saying Diana couldn't have been so famous today, nor the public so in love with her, are underestimating her I think. The only reason there's nobody with those levels of fame now is that there's nobody like her.
The proof of how glamorous and charismatic she was is that in the decades since, nobody has been able to find a movie star (aka the most glamorous people in the world) to play her who doesn't look like a photocopy after the ink has run down. Clive James said of her, "When she looked at you it was like the sun coming up - if the sun came up giggling."
IMO if she were in her prime today, social media would be smothered in images of her. She would still be on the front of every magazine every week - and magazine circulation would be a lot higher than it is. Because of her Royal duties and the particular types of philanthropy she chose she was always on the news, and still would be. She wore the best clothes, and because of her role she could get away with things no-one else could: matching hats for daywear, jewels the size of the Ritz and ballgowns studded with pearls. She had two children more gorgeous than the current Cambridges and she liked to be photographed hugging them while doing Of the People stuff like theme park rides. She was a world-class master of optics. Yet until the fateful Panorama interview she hardly ever spoke, which also made her mysterious.
She was a total narcissist and I fully understand why the BRF in general and Charles in particular couldn't stand her, but even so, as long as her public utterances were confined to pleas for her good causes and pictures of her adorable throne-bound kiddies, I can't imagine an age in which she wouldn't get away with being every girl's ideal princess, every gay man's style icon and every straight man's idea of unattainable heaven.
Ironically, in light of Meghan's obsession with Archie's nonexistent Princedom, Diana's real title was "HRH Diana, Princess of Wales", NOT "Princess Diana", which carries the connotation of being born to Royal blood. But from the day she married that was what the public insisted on calling her, and it would not be told otherwise. Honestly, it was mow-you-down levels of fame and adulation.

I do think it's funny to look back on that day. I don't have a recording it, but I remember it very, very clearly. It was an odd watershed night for me.
I was 17 and had started dating my first boyfriend. I'd spent the night at his house (lied to my mom and told her I was at a friend's house.) We had done blow the night before. And to ease the come down, we ordered pizza and watched movies. It was super fun and sexy, even if we were exhausted from the night before.
I remember we watched Running on Empty. It was easily the most depressing movie ever. Well, more bittersweet I guess. River had just died a few years prior. The flick really got to me. Then we discovered Diana had died. Jay was nearly 15 years older than me and he didn't care at all. Wasn't his world. He was too manly for the monarchy.
But I did, even though I didn't give two shits about Lady Diana as a celebrity. It was something more. Some existential loss. Innocence or the reality of death or the ephemeral nature of everything. Or some other teenage angsty thing that I didn't know how to synthesize. Or maybe it was the cocaine come down. Or the movie. Or the pressure of having a man I loved (I did. We stayed together for seven years), but not being able to tell anyone but my two best friends. It all seemed so fleeting and delicate and at the same time too big and heavy to understand.
Either way, on the way back home that night, as I drove home alone, I just balled. And I am not a cryer.
And that's my weird Diana story. Not as good as Uno playing queens screaming. But still...
by Anonymous | reply 101 | March 16, 2021 6:41 AM |
I don’t remember where I was. It may have been I’d called my mom to check in on her, and she told me.
What happened next is a blur, but I know I fell to the floor, sobbing gutturally and rending my clothes with hands that had become shaking claws. I then threw myself from a 3 story window.
(Just kidding -being an American, i didn’t care.)

True r113. I just watched the HBO documentary. While I remembered the events clearly, seeing the footage again was revelatory. It was so interesting seeing and hearing the reactions. I hadn't seen this video either, despite it being several years old!
I still remember Diana's death. I'm in the UK, so it happened in the early hours of the morning for us hence most of her learnt of her death when we woke up on 31 August. I was only a kid at the time and I was first downstairs in the morning as per usual, so I put the TV on while I ate my cereal. Then I went upstairs and told my parents and they didn't believe me at first - I guess cause I was young they thought I was getting confused with someone else.
It's strange because I was young at the time I saw Diana as "old", so while I understood it was very sad, I didn't really understand the tragedy. Now I'm older than Diana was when she died, I realise how young 36 is and of course she was beloved at the time which just added to it.

Nice to know they're all alive and well and still friends so many years later.

These guys really remind me of all of my gay friends I knew and hung out with around that time.

Yes, R10. That was a widespread rumour during her lifetime. It was said the Spencer children used to chant, "Raine, Raine, go away," too.
I also heard that when Diana was a teenager Raine told her to turn down her music. Diana hired a guy to come and screw up the wiring on Raine's stereo.

Diana and her siblings allegedly also tried to push Raine down the stairs.
Granted, about 99% of the population of Britain would've loved to have pushed Raine Spencer down the stairs.
