"Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd

It comes closer to being an authentic 80's song than any other wannabe 80's track than I have ever heard.

The Weeknd captures the sound, the beat, the synthesizer and even the voice, better than anyone has ever done outside of the actual 1980's.

He and the producers of "Blinding Lights" did a truly amazing job.

Did it win any awards? It should have.

It did?

Did you even listen to the song, R1?

by Anonymousreply 2March 8, 2021 11:04 PM

I never imagined it was 80s.

by Anonymousreply 3March 8, 2021 11:09 PM

Great song! Perfect for jogging

by Anonymousreply 4March 8, 2021 11:10 PM

R4 I'm sure that's what he was going for lol

by Anonymousreply 5March 9, 2021 6:49 AM

I was pleasantly surprised by it.

by Anonymousreply 6March 9, 2021 6:53 AM

He was robbed by the Grammys. Best song of last year by far.

by Anonymousreply 7March 9, 2021 7:24 AM

This song would have fit in seamlessly with Pretty in Pink or The Breakfast Club.

That's how 80's it is.

by Anonymousreply 8March 9, 2021 7:34 AM

Sorry, no. It sounds like what it is - a recent song with an attempted 80s flavor. And the video is disgusting. No part of this music, lyrics, or video even remotely qualifies for an award for anything.

I really love The Weeknd.

He's one of the better artists of this generation, along with Bruno Mars. They both actually have talent.

Here he is with a decent Michael Jackson impersonation. Or maybe I should say ... tribute.

The beat is basically Rod Stewart "Young Turks"

The Copycat Thread Thief is crapping in the DL punch bowl again, stealing ideas from the Favorite Pop Song of the Last 10 Years thread because every, little song the unhip maniac didn't know about before "deserves its own thread."

F&F the OP, please. He's an unmedicated, Borderline Bipolar who needs to STOP namedropping expired pop altogether and only post breaking news threads. He's a tiresome child who should seek social interaction with other mental patients in his hometown.

R12 I guess he has more than one account because he's off in this thread making threats and FF DLers until they get a ban. I ignored him in the linked thread but I can see this OP.

That’s why I love the song.

And until the Super Bowl, I didn’t realize that he’d had so many hits. He kinda sneaked up on me, like Bruno Mars. Very talented, and I actually looked up his Spotify profile.

The only negative is that he dated one of the Jenner gals (must have keen Kylie). But that might have been for PR.

This gay guy is my favorite cover. He is adorable. The remixed the 80s song "Take on Me" with Blinding Lights.

What’s a Weeknd?

by Anonymousreply 16March 9, 2021 9:43 AM

Blinding Light and Rain on Me were the best pop songs from 2020 IMHO.

I don't remember that. He's dated Bella Hadid and "went out" with Selena Gomez.

by Anonymousreply 18March 9, 2021 10:19 AM

It doesn’t feature the words “neon” or “electric” so it’s not an a accurate pastiche of a formulaic 80s song. The lyrics:

And I said, ooh, I'm blinded by the lights

No, I can't sleep until I feel your touch

Should’ve been:

And I said, ooh, I'm blinded by the neon lights

No, I can't sleep until I feel your electric touch

by Anonymousreply 19March 9, 2021 10:23 AM

His voice sounds like static to me. No clarity, no depth, no arc.

by Anonymousreply 20March 9, 2021 10:32 AM

Grammy troll

by Anonymousreply 21March 9, 2021 11:20 AM

R19 = Debbie Gibson

by Anonymousreply 22March 9, 2021 12:58 PM

R11 YES! I couldn’t place the song.

by Anonymousreply 23March 9, 2021 1:06 PM

Yes R11. Never thought of that. Yep—looks lifted.

by Anonymousreply 24March 9, 2021 1:14 PM

What are you guys talking about?

This song sounds nothing like Young Turks.

by Anonymousreply 25March 9, 2021 3:09 PM

New music barely registers with me,but this song is great ! it beats yet another rap song.

by Anonymousreply 26March 9, 2021 3:15 PM

Lol R19.

You totally just made that up.

Like, TOTALLY.

by Anonymousreply 27March 9, 2021 3:19 PM

Shitty fucking autotune song captures nothing, sounds the same as 100,000 other autotuned songs.

Performers are no longer required to have the ability to sing well, or even at all.

I just read elsewhere this song has been in the top 10 for a year. I have no idea why.

by Anonymousreply 28March 9, 2021 4:37 PM

That might be the case, R28, for newer songs in general. But The Weeknd can actually sing.

by Anonymousreply 29March 10, 2021 5:36 AM

Too many producers want to be stars (Kanye) when they have no charisma or unique voice.

by Anonymousreply 30March 10, 2021 5:54 AM

The week North Dakota? The weakened?

by Anonymousreply 31March 10, 2021 6:05 AM

R29 How can you tell? Why use autotune if he can sing? The blending and blurring into a robotic buzz indistinguishable from other robotic buzz "voices"---done just because consumers prefer it?
