Phillip lounging at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel pool.
Nice tat.

Did anyone cover the QAnon Inauguration gathering at the Capitol??
I'd love to see Chris or Rachel mock those losers.

It's paywalled, R4.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | March 5, 2021 1:02 AM |
loved Rachel reading the hearing transcript of that idiot rioter who sat in Pelosi's office and is now whining he's still in jail. Her mocking tone was hilarious

I want to feel Chris Hayes' massive muscles all over me.

MSNBC needs some new blood
by Anonymous | reply 16 | March 5, 2021 6:14 PM |
I agree, R16.
The hosts recycle most of the commentators on that channel.
But that's the nature of 24/7 television.
You can only find so many people who are available to comment.

I still miss Kasie DC on Sunday evening, best show, best panels. Record but rarely watch WTE, where she is wasted.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | March 5, 2021 6:52 PM |
Chris Hayes is getting porkier and shriller and stammer-ier and "like"-ier than I can stand now.
Mehdi Hasan is growing on me, on the other hand.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | March 5, 2021 7:47 PM |
I like Hayes' show but whoever here thinks he's muscular and fit is dead wrong. He's fit-fat. I've seen that pic of him at the gym but clearly his diet defeats a lot of the work he puts in.
I like how hard Hayes goes at the evil repubs
the sassiest by far is O'Donnell though. I laugh at him going in on the repubs as he sounds every bit the white guy who was young in the 70s and 80s. I'm glad he doesn't try to talk like a young person though as it would be absurd for someone his age

R18 I liked that show, too. MSNBC is exceedingly boring on weekends unless something big breaks.

Yeah, I don't really watch it much on weekends.

I do too. Kasie may not have tons of personality or charisma, but I think that's actually what I liked about Kasie DC. It was just calm, smart, and featured interesting guests. It was my Sunday TV highlight. I'm not a huge fan of Alicia Menendez or Joshua Johnson or any of MSNBC's weekend anchors and hosts.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | March 6, 2021 1:34 AM |
I must be in the minority but I LOVE Alicia Menendez and Joshua Johnson, find them both very straightforward and engaging.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | March 6, 2021 2:10 AM |
I'm fine with Joshua. Nothing personal against Alicia but I think she's a better commentator than host

Velshi is paired with female co-anchors (Romans & Ruhle) who he gets into fast-talking repartee with. When he's solo he seems to be at a loss and trying to hard.

Nicolle Wallace has been trying to control her inappropriate laughter to the point of acknowledging it at the time ("I'm laughing only because _____"), but there is no hope for her. Could it be her republican reality breaking through and ridiculing us? I hope not.
You are insulting and alienating the very viewers, whose plights are under discussion at the time, with your idiocy; get a grip, woman. Do none of the top brass monitor these shows?

Rachel was talking tonight about her brother-in-law but I didn't think that Rachel and Susan were married. She said her brother-in-law and Susan's mother went to get vaccinated together.
This link says they aren't married. All the articles about Rachel says that Susan is her partner, not her wife.

[quote] MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace Reveals What Now ‘Terrifies’ Her About The GOP
MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace on Monday told “Late Show” host Stephen Colbert what really scares her about the Republican Party following its capitulation to former President Donald Trump.
Wallace, who served as White House communications director under former President George W. Bush, described herself as a “self-loathing former Republican.” She lamented how the GOP today isn’t even trying to spin events and is now just built on a foundation of B.S.
“They are so far from the truth that you can no longer have a conversation with them about how to solve anything because they don’t agree on what the problems are, and that terrifies me,” the “Deadline: White House” anchor said.

What show has Phil been on lately??
I haven't seen him in forever!
by Anonymous | reply 49 | March 9, 2021 6:30 PM |
Phil and Carol Leonnig are at work on a book apparently on the last year of the Trump administration. Two things: if Phil is under a deadline, he may be forgoing television appearances to meet his publisher's deadline. Also, once the book's publication is close, the publisher will embargo the author(s) so that they're not "stale" by publication date.

If you're into pocket gay types, Jacob Soboroff is so much hotter than Vaughn!
by Anonymous | reply 55 | March 9, 2021 11:29 PM |
Yeah but Jacob is straight.
Vaughn is... questionable.
So it's fun to speculate.

My gaydar launches to Mars whenever Vaughn appears on camera.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | March 9, 2021 11:42 PM |

Kornacki is gay, and he doesn't ping to me at all.

Yes, R61, impossible to watch without shedding at least a tear or two.

I like Joy Reid but DAMMIT. Stop interrupting your guests unless you absolutely have to because you ran out of time. You know there’s a Zoom delay. It’s so annoying!
by Anonymous | reply 64 | March 12, 2021 1:46 AM |
Joy has developed a habit of muttering yeah as a guest finishes a point, especially if they are not going where her pointed question directed them. Almost as bad as Ari's hmmm, as if he was busy on his phone and realized a response is required.
Nicolle is a bit overexposed on MSNBC lately, but her engagement and response to guests is impeccable. She is an excellent questioner, and very interested in responses. She often changes direction in comment/questioning in response.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | March 12, 2021 2:35 PM |
I said that about Joy's "yeahs" three months ago here on the previous MSNBC thread. It does appear like she's not listening to her guest and Ari's "hmmms" evoke the same issue. Engage in the conversation, guys!
And I agree about Nicolle.....she really is the best anchor on TV, any network. '
by Anonymous | reply 66 | March 12, 2021 6:18 PM |
[quote] Nicolle is a bit overexposed on MSNBC lately, but her engagement and response to guests is impeccable. She is an excellent questioner, and very interested in responses
This is what I look for in an interviewer. Someone who actually LISTENS to what their guests are saying.
Too many of these talking heads just want to hear THEMSELVES talk. They really don't give a shit what their guests have to say.
It's only THEIR opinion that counts.
If that's the case - if you're not going to listen to your guest comments - then DON'T HAVE THEM ON.
Just make the show about yourself talking for the entire 60 minutes!!!!
*glaring at Joy Reid*
by Anonymous | reply 67 | March 12, 2021 6:25 PM |
Chuck Todd makes noises while every guest is speaking. It is so rude and annoying. Is he really only 5' 2"?

Lol at Todd being 5"2" tall. I pray it is true.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | March 13, 2021 12:21 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 72 | March 13, 2021 2:24 AM |
Last night Rachel tried to get Dr Fauci to state there was pressure from the WH for the CDC to delay statement on fully vaccinated guidelines. WTF is her problem? She had read some article on new drugs to treat COVID patients and she was speculating there was something amiss with the WH not promoting thes wonder drugs. Fauci had to once again correct her and explain the drugs she was talking about were not oral drugs but drugs that require infusion centers to be used. He further informed her these drugs were being looked at. You could see she was not happy with being put in her place. She then told Dr. Fauci he was welcome to come on her show anytime he was suspicious of any WH issues with being forthcoming on the virus. Again, WTF is her problem with Biden? She talks out of both sides of her mouth about him.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | March 13, 2021 3:16 AM |
Chuck is a lot taller than 5'2" for the love of God. All you have to do is look at him. He even stands up now once in a while on MTP. He also makes the noises to acknowledge the other person's answers. It isn't agreement or disagreement. It is no different than reporters constantly nodding to their interviewees to keep them talking.

"I want to push back on that"
"I want to pull on that thread"
"I want to follow up on this topic"
"I want to drill down on this"
"I want you to pick up on that"

Yeah, Nicolle has her tag lines as R101, R102 and R103 noted above but she is still the best of the MSNBC hosts. I have noticed that there are 4 republican commentators (Rick Wilson, John Hielman, Steve Schmidt and (to a lesser extent) Mike Murphy) that look quite similar but have s viewpoints and delivery styles that are a bit unique. Of the four, I find Mike Murphy the best since he really boils down the topic at hand and doesn't go to the Moon and back like John H. to explain what could be said in far fewer words. Also, have you noted how many different pair of eyeglasses John H. wears when he's on? Maybe he's hawking frames for Warby Parker. Mike Murphy is usually on The 11th Hour which is a bit late for me but I've caught him in the replays if I wake up and can't sleep.

R122 - Yes! Kendis Gibson is horrible - he constantly stumbles when speaking. I stopped watching the weekend show that he co-hosts with someone who's name escapes me which is a good thing. I miss David Gura - he is so CUTE and has a great personality and sense of humor.
by Anonymous | reply 125 | March 22, 2021 2:39 PM |

Firing David Gura was a big mistake. I know he's just a white guy but he was very engaging and informed and he would be a good contrast to all of the BIPOC weekend anchors. I wonder if there were other reasons for letting him go?
by Anonymous | reply 127 | March 22, 2021 6:17 PM |

R132 Ari is fucking sexy. I like to watch him speak with the sound muted. He does something special with his mouth, kind of let's it hang open for an extra split second at the end of a phrase. A lot like JKF Jr. It looks almost like he may have studied JFK Jr. based on other gestures & mannerisms. He does that knowing, lazy, flirty thing with everyone.

Are Ari Melber and Nicolle Wallace off all week? If so, why? Passover week doesn't start until March 27 (Sat.) and Easter isn't until April 4. Even if Passover were the reason, I know that Melber is Jewish but I don't think that Wallace is (though Wikipedia says that her boyfriend, Mike Schmidt, is).
In any event, Wallace should be careful -- I like her sub better!

Ari Melber isn't off. Nicolle Wallace and Joy Reid are.

OOOOPS! You're right, R136 -- Johnson is subbing for Reid, not Melber. So I don't know which I dislike more, Reid or her sub -- thank goodness for the local news that's on at the same time as her show.

Man MSNBC's coverage of the Boulder shooting is horrible, Lawrence O'Donnell was on during the news conference by the police and didn't even realize they gave the number of dead victims. So he sums up what was just broadcast and tells us that the police still didn't tell us the number of victims even though they just did.

Alex Wagner is the best and has always had a knack for this. I loved her original msnbc show and never quite understood why she left, especially right before the 2016 election started heating up. Nicolle Wallace is great too, but they should definitely find a prominent place for Alex on the permanent schedule if she's open to it.
by Anonymous | reply 165 | March 25, 2021 8:35 PM |
Alex is a natural—she is articulate & understands politics.
MSNBC would be fools to pass up on her, but maybe the Circus prohibits her from doing a weekday show.

I was sort of pissed when Nicolle took over Kornacki's slot, but eventually warmed to her, thinking she did a good job during the Trump years. If Alex were to take over one of her hours, the comparison might be too stark to warrant Nicolle sticking around.

"Kornacki had a slot?"
April 28, 2017 "The show [Deadline Whitehouse] based in New York, will take over the 4-5 PM ET timeslot, replacing the 4 PM edition of MSNBC Live currently hosted by political correspondent Steve Kornacki. As host, Wallace will tackle the latest political developments and conduct newsmaker interviews, according to the network. MSNBC says Kornacki “will continue his presence in the hour, providing in-depth discussion and analysis.”"
Steve's continuing presence lasted less than 2 weeks. It was a little humiliating to have him just sitting on set for much of the show.

It’s been awhile since we’ve discussed Phil Rucker and his wonderfully appointed, street-level condo somewhere near downtown DC.
Today with Nicolle he was showing off his embrace of spring with fresh daffodils and a beautiful orchid. But what caught my eye was the painting on the wall... I think he changed it for the season, but I can’t really tell.
Also... where has Nicolle been?! I believe she was out for two weeks. I didn’t mind Alex Whatshername too much last week, but the first fill-in I believe was Ayman who doesn’t quite do it for me as much as John Heilemann does.

I've lost all respect for Tim Miller.
He was just on Brian Williams' "11th Hour" show, wearing a t-shirt. A T-SHIRT. ON A NATIONAL NEWS BROADCAST.
And he was speaking on the serious subject of Dr. Birx, and how she failed to do her job when it was important, which contributed to the 400,000 Americans dying unnecessarily.
So he decided to wear a T-SHIRT on-air. It said "BOO BOO RECORDS."
What a fucking MORON.
Talk about the dumbing down of America. People complain about wearing t-shirts to fancy restaurants, t-shirts in First Class on a flight, etc.
But this one really takes the motherfucking CAKE.

The interviewee practice that irks me is when the pundit, analyst, commentator starts their reply (or even each sentence) with "Look..." or "Listen....". Sure on air, they blast each other—they’re rivals in this blood sport, you’re supposed to!
But at the end of the day, would MSNBC really love to see Fox News go down in flames? No, because they might be next. Winning does not always mean killing the competition.
These rich news proprietors (the people who sign off on things like advertising) all clink glass at the same Executive Clubs anyway. It’s all a big dick measuring context. Those ads show ONE moment they revealed their hand.

I think Rachel is hiding something from us. I don’t think she was in the New York studio. The last time she had “technical difficulties “ was also a Friday. I think she has arranged to do her Friday shows from her home or perhaps a borrowed studio, perhaps in Springfield, Albany or Hartford. For some reason she doesn’t want the audience to know. Perhaps she thinks it makes her look like a prima donna.
There. I said it.

[quote] I think Rachel is hiding something from us. I don’t think she was in the New York studio. The last time she had “technical difficulties “ was also a Friday.
You may be right. I wasn't watching last night, but from what I understand, her video froze, and then they said in the crawl at the bottom of the screen that "Rachel's camera is having technical difficulties." Then Rachel said it was a power outage in the studio. But wasn't Ali Velshi, who temporarily stepped in, supposedly in the same New York studio? Was it a highly localized power outage that only affected Rachel's set but not Ali's set?
Now that a lot of news anchors and hosts have perfected the art of using the right lighting and makeup and "green screens" in their homes, I suspect we'll see more cases of them "phoning it in" from home while fooling us to make it look like they're actually in the studio.
by Anonymous | reply 239 | April 3, 2021 8:02 PM |
Obviously Rachel was not in the studio. I assumed she was still doing her show from home every night.
by Anonymous | reply 240 | April 3, 2021 8:08 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 242 | April 3, 2021 8:29 PM |
Because this is the second time (at least) that they had to scramble to fill her air time for 20-30 minutes. Her being away from the studio makes it more complicated and places MSNBC at the mercy of third parties.
Plus, it just seems dishonest not to disclose that she’s not in New York. MSNBC has always been spotty about making it clear where a speaker is located.
by Anonymous | reply 243 | April 3, 2021 8:30 PM |

I don't think Rachel needs to tell us exactly where she is each night. If she wants to anchor from home, and the network execs are OK with it, that's fine. But she tweeted that the technical difficulties were due to a "power outage at the studio." If that's not true, and it was actually because of problems with her webcam or Internet connection at home, then she's lying to her viewers. (And no, I'm not necessarily saying she was lying, but the frozen video sounds more like camera or Internet issues than a studio power outage.)

R248, "Power outage at the studio" doesn't necessarily mean 30 Rock. When Rachel returned to the airwaves, she joked with Velshi about an errant squirrel knocking a plug out of the wall.

Rachel Maddow tonight:

and she is a Rhodes Scholar?
by Anonymous | reply 261 | April 6, 2021 1:38 AM |
One of the few things that bug me about Rachel is her self-effacing routine. She pulls it out a lot whenever complimented, or when bantering with co-hosts. I've heard her refer to herself more than once as "just a potbellied lesbian". I'm not buying it.
by Anonymous | reply 262 | April 6, 2021 4:04 AM |
She only has two choices, R262.
1) She can be humble and self-deprecating about her achievements, degrees, and honors, or...
2) She can be an obnoxious, braggart blowhard who is constantly tooting her own horn.
I'll take #1.

Dr. Maddow is a gracious interviewer.

R263 She has unlimited choices. One is she can be humble and still acknowledging of her accomplishments and her competence, accepting compliments graciously. Self-deprecating works when it's funny & revealing. Who knows, she may yet get the hang of it, she seems to most everything else.

Joe has been remote for years.
If he comes back in the studio, then he can go ballistic about the schools.
by Anonymous | reply 271 | April 6, 2021 9:39 PM |
I only watch MJ for the commentators some of whom are exclusive to MSNBC. I mute when when Scarface goes on one of his diatribes and Meeka is just a mess from the word GO. Mike Barnacle is always on point and Willie is good too. I consider Kasie Hunt to be a show pony as she usually responds to the interviewee with a 'huh' then goes onto her next talking point w/o engaging further. That is all.
by Anonymous | reply 272 | April 6, 2021 10:16 PM |

Kasie has always been loyal to Morning Joe, R273.
That show basically got her to where she is today.
Before that, Kasie was just an obscure reporter like Vaughn Hillyard. It was her visibility on Morning Joe that raised her profile.
The same could be said of Willie Geist, and many others. Morning Joe (regardless of what you think of Joe) is a really good launching pad for MSNBC reporters.

Rachel is on fire tonight with this narrative she's creating about corporations in politics. Feels like the olden, pre-Trump, days! :)
I really cannot watch Morning Joe anymore. I haven't watched since about 2016. Ever since y'all posted that video of Willie Geist piling onto Rosie O along with Trump, them two and their drama, and NOT BEING IN THE STUDIO, I had to stop, although I agree w/ R270 & R275.
LOL R278, yes. I would watch sometimes to see Aymin and UGHH, that hour is the reason I haven't warmed up to her weekend slots. Yasmin & Aymin and Velshi & Ruhle were such forced pairings, I really felt for Aymin and Ali! And I like Stephanie!

R276 I witnessed the on-camera bonding moment when Kornacki & Lemire realized they were both from neighboring counties north of Boston. Lemire is from the city of Lawrence. I am becoming increasingly aggravated with MSNBC.
From Day 1 in 2017, the powers that be at the network INSISTED that everyone call Donald Trump, PRESIDENT Trump. They always used that title when referring to him.
Not so with President Biden.
Everyone, from Joe Scarborough, to Claire McCaskill, to Mika.... I mean EVERYONE keeps calling him "Joe Biden."
WHY CAN'T THEY GIVE HIM THE RESPECT THAT HE'S ENTITLED TO????
He's not just "Joe Biden." He's the President of the United States!!!
If they could make the effort for the WORST person to ever have that title - Donald DUMP - then why can't they do the same for President Biden???
Fucking cunts!

Schmidt is doing this now but it's not just him. I hate when a reporter or a host asks a reporter legal questions especially when there's a lawyer on the panel who is obviously the expert. It looks dumb seeing Schmidt do that with Joyce Vance in the box next to him. I don't know why a lot of hosts ask the reporters any legal questions
by Anonymous | reply 312 | April 9, 2021 1:12 AM |
But in this instance, r312, wouldn't Schmidt possibly be more informed about all the details of the Gaetz case that are not entirely known to Joyce Vance yet?
by Anonymous | reply 313 | April 9, 2021 1:22 AM |
Mike Schmidt just said that one of the suspects in the Gaetz case "flaunted" the law by doing some forbidden thing openly. Shouldn't a newspaper reporter know the difference between "flaunt" and "flout"?
Awhile back, Nicolle Wallace repeatedly called an asterisk an "asterick", which doesn't exist, so I guess they deserve each other.
by Anonymous | reply 314 | April 9, 2021 1:31 AM |

I heard Joy tonight. She was angry that the Brooklyn Center police officer was not fired but got to resign. She said it allowed the officer to keep her pension and work elsewhere. Honestly, that officer is going no place but to prison and if she was fired without a hearing, she could sue the city. Joy knows that. Then she went on and on about there's no way that anyone could mistake a gun for a taser and it was insulting to suggest that. Has she ever heard of right-left confusion, a brain condition? I'm not saying it happened or that this woman should walk, but it does negate the specific intent needed for Murder One charges. Then she took a shot at the Mayor for cancelling an interview for her show, implying he belonged on air to justify his actions. That's bullshit. He has the national guard and angry mobs in his backyard. That's his top priority.
In short, this isn't AM talk radio. where Joy's job is to work people up so they keep listening or call in. I respect her anger and pain. I think lots of people need those emotions expressed right now. But it's also important to dispassionately explain the law and not work people up ways that exacerbate their very real grievances with modern policing.

I don't think people are questioning THAT the officer mistook the gun for the taser.
The issue is why: how that could possibly have happened in the first place when a gun and a taser are very different from each other and they're on different sides of an officer's body.
It's almost a question of what was going on in the officer's head subconsciously while in the situation.
by Anonymous | reply 353 | April 14, 2021 10:34 AM |
[quote] I don't think people are questioning THAT the officer mistook the gun for the taser.
There's no question that she did use the gun instead of the taser. The question is whether she used the gun by mistake or on purpose. It seems unlikely that she would use the gun on purpose under the circumstances (it didn't appear that she was being threatened or provoked into losing her temper), which would mean that it must have been a mistake -- yet that seems almost equally unlikely. According to Sherlock Holmes: “Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth.”

Remember NBC's Dr Joseph Fair who "came down with Covid" and pretty much disappeared from NBC and MSNBC? "came down with Covid" in quotation marks because it appears he never had Covid but had some other type of lung infection.
Well when Nicolle Wallace tweeted "We miss @DrLeanaWen on our air but won’t miss her book: twitter.com/DrLeanaWen/sta…"
He replied "She was smart to leave with her reputation intact. I so look forward to her book."

by Anonymous | reply 369 | April 15, 2021 12:06 AM |
Joy: Potter hasn't apologized. Potter should have been charged with murder because no one believes her story and a Black man would be charged with murder. Manslaughter 2 is meaningless. Guest: Charging will do nothing to calm down the protesters.
How about? She was charged, which is a rarity. What do you need to prove the crime? Why wasn't she charged with murder 3 like Chauvin? Here's who Daunte Wright was. Here's his family. His life mattered.
Just "It's a travesty."

No, she was talented and charismatic but she is too much of a partisan on this issue. Or maybe she's reflecting the view of her friends without thinking about how it plays o air.

I kind of miss seeing Zerlina Maxwell, she used to be something of a regular on Deadline WH. I guess I have to try watching her show on the Peacock.
by Anonymous | reply 374 | April 15, 2021 1:28 AM |
Dr. Wen left MSNBC for CNN...wonder if she gets more airtime there, or gets paid more for the same amount (since she was on MSNBC fairly regularly).
Also, re: Dr. (as in Ph.D.) Fair's snarky tweet, I'm guessing Dr. Wen left with her reputation intact because she wasn't an expert in her field who apparently, essentially, self-diagnosed COVID, and basked in the subsequent attention, even though multiple tests had come back negative.

by Anonymous | reply 377 | April 15, 2021 1:16 PM |
IF you want to see Phillip Mena then you are going to have to get up early or DVR because he is on a show called Early Today which may or may not be preempted by your local station's early news programs.
[quote] As of 2019, the program broadcasts three unique half hour shows at 3:00, 3:30 and 4:00 a.m. Eastern Time and is then tape delayed in a continuous half-hour loop until 8:00 a.m. Eastern Time (the show produces an additional half hour live at 6:30 a.m).

BIG dust up between Sean Patrick Maloney and Joe Scarface on MJ this Friday morning. Sean was showing his onions and not falling for Joe's rant about how the Dem's are not doing enough to combat the GQP talking points making the Dem's appear weak. Joe seemed to back down and ended the interview since Sean kept up and didn't fall for Joe's tripe.

What happened on The 11th Hour last night? They had the first two segments, and they repeated them for some reason, and then went on with the rest of the show, ending well past the hour. I was sipping a margarita at the the time, but this wasn't the alcohol.

Kristen Welker should get a show. She’s underutilized. She knows the White House just as well as Nicolle Wallace does, or Kasie Hunt knows Capitol Hill.

I'd rather see the great Kristen Welker as a force out on the road and at the WH. Sitting behind an anchor's desk is a waste of her talents. That said, I wish she was a nightly contributor to Chris Hayes, reporting from the WH lawn like Jim Acosta does with Anderson Cooper most nights.

by Anonymous | reply 412 | April 19, 2021 11:03 PM |
I can only assume that Kristen Welker doesn't want her own show.
Which is a good thing, because it means she isn't a fame whore, and is totally dedicated to her job at the White House.
You have to admit, it is a pretty exciting place to work. Especially when there are big things going down.
It's impressive, that she's only one of a very few reporters during the Trump era, who he actually respected. He would call on her during press conferences, and give her actual answers.
That's the mark of a true pro. If you can tame the Trump, you can take on any interview.

R411, I had the very same reaction and quickly mentally ran through "a knot in my stomach" or "a knot in the pit of my stomach" or "a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach" and found myself wondering if in her haste, or while under pressure, she just jumbled things a bit. I also wondered if it could be a regional thing. Then I snapped out of it and went back to eating my lunch. 😄

Whenever Ashley Parker’s name is announced by any anchor on MSNBC, she breaks into this huge toothy grin, from ear to ear , and holds that phony smile as the rest of the panel is introduced. It is often inappropriate-especially when the topic is serious or depressing.
Phil Rucker does the same but he knows enough to lay off when the story is heavy. Not Ashley.
Someone at the Post must have told the two of them to do this.
by Anonymous | reply 436 | April 22, 2021 2:13 AM |
I think Ashley was told that her resting face looks like she just lost her best friend, so she smiles to indicate that she's fine and glad to be there. She does occasionally smile spontaneously, and the smile itself looks natural, and not unlike her deliberate smile. I cut her some slack, if she really broadened her smile to display her lower teeth, as so many on-air types do, then I'd call it fake.

Ashley is a great reporter and also has an unfortunate case of RBF (resting bitch face). I hate myself for saying "she should smile more" because it sounds so condescending and sexist when you look at history. But I also have criticisms of men too. Lawrence O'Donnell's makeup man/woman makes him look embalmed.

Yes R448, the smoke detector beeps are out of control on MSNBC. That sound is like nails on a chalkboard. I can't take any guest seriously who is too lazy to change a 9 volt battery. You know that didn't just start beeping today...they've probably been ignoring it for weeks.

I should have some examples, but I don't, Rachel's analogies are lame. Not as lame as John Oliver's, whose border on cringe inducing. Rachel's are more like what you expect from someone twice her age. Maybe it's endearing in her case.
by Anonymous | reply 463 | April 24, 2021 5:54 AM |
Way back when Rachel first started I wasn't much of a fan due to her long, drawn out story telling when covering a current topic. Over the years I have warmed up to her especially when she was a guest on Late Night w/Steven Colbert (pre-COVID). She was very engaging and quite entertaining which is a side I hadn't seen when viewing her show. I now realize she is one of the best on MSNBC and I don't watch her on a regular basis I do catch some of her more memorable segments on Youtube.

The technical issue was also a thing on Morning Joe this morning when one of the guests was asked a long question about foreign affairs, and he proceeded to talk with the sound not working. So they immediately had to go to Ian Bremmer and basically said, well how about you answering that question.
In fact while I was waiting for the show to start, I watched the tail end of Way Too Early, and as Kasie Hunt was talking with Hans Nichols, one of his lights popped off, and he ended up looking like a character in a thriller.

MSNBC must have told their hosts that they have to start broadcasting from the studios instead of home. Rachel Maddow said last night that she had come into her office for the first time since last March and this morning on Morning Joe Mika and Joe and sitting next together instead of being on separate cameras so they are at least in the same room if not in the main studio.

Ari is a flirt. A big one. He can really turn on the charm. Very handsome with a delightful smile. I really enjoyed his show during the Mueller investigation and the impeachment trials. He is at his best discussing legal matters with other attorneys, explains things simply and thoroughly.
I do wish he would leave his rap references to the Fallback Friday segments. Somewhat jarring and unserious to hear him try to relate a rap line to a political situation. Cringe worthy at times. I think he would be very happy with a talk show, flitting from music, to films, comedy, culture evolution and interviews.

Kasie Hunt is attractive and anchors well the early morning show in terms for format, coverage, and questions in guest interviews. However, her voice is annoying. She can't help that really, but the screeching and the heavy dimension of her tone is not comforting.
by Anonymous | reply 487 | April 28, 2021 6:52 PM |
Kasie seems in a bad position since taking the 5am slot.
Like she has to agree w/ Mika & Joe all the time.

I like seeing Rachel and Nicole together. Joy usually behaves herself when she is with these two colleagues.

[quote] Chris Hayes has been given the old heave-ho once again tonight.
He must be pissed. Joy Reid got to do her regular "Reid Out" show at 7, then join Rachel, Nicolle and Brian at 8 for coverage of Biden's speech, even though Chris is the usual 8:00 host. It looks like Chris will always be shut out of special coverage and breaking news. Chris doesn't get to be with the "cool kids."
I've noticed, too, that lately Chris keeps bragging about himself on his show, saying things like "As someone who's been covering politics for many years ...." "As someone who has reported on this story ...," as if he's been feeling slighted and feels the need to remind himself and his viewers that what he does matters.

Last night Chris said he would be part of tonight's post-Address panel; I think Lawrence will join them as well.
by Anonymous | reply 503 | April 29, 2021 2:41 AM |
Joy went off on Tim Scott for not giving the speech she wanted to hear, completely missing the point that he was speaking for his party, not for himself. Lawrence and Nicolle had to spell it out for her.
by Anonymous | reply 504 | April 29, 2021 5:20 AM |
Joy needs to go.
by Anonymous | reply 505 | April 29, 2021 2:03 PM |
Did you catch the pre-Address interview with Transportation Secretary Buttigieg? Lazy Joy asked him if she could call him Secretary Pete and, of course, he said "yes." Following that exchange, both Rachel and Nicolle pointedly referred to him as "Mr. Secretary" at every opportunity, distancing themselves from their clueless co-moderator.
And who made Joy Reid the arbiter of political fashion taste? She, of the inappropriate, ill-fitting on-air attire, has the nerve to critique what Vice President Harris, Speaker Pelosi and First Lady Biden were wearing? Awwwkkk!
(I say I won't watch her, but can't look away from the train wreck.)

And she was actually kinda cute and flirty with Pete. Hardly condescending.

R510
Jake is an “access” journalist who is negative towards the democrats and pits against the republicans. Nicolle basically ignored his commentary today.

by Anonymous | reply 514 | April 30, 2021 1:17 AM |
R513: You say I hate Black women journalists. Come to school, son/daughter.
The following are a handful of those who are/were pioneering Black women journalists in the true sense of the profession (from memory and just off the top of my head):
Gwen Ifill, Melba Tolliver, Sue Simmons. Flo Kennedy, Bev Smith, Oprah Winfrey, Carol Martin, Janet McLaughlin, and countless other women who made their marks on-screen. Their equivalents in the print medium and in radio are as praiseworthy.
I've known and long admired these women, and Joy Reid fails on every level in fulfilling and continuing their collective legacy.
Peace.
by Anonymous | reply 515 | April 30, 2021 1:45 AM |
Bullshit, R514. Joy's show is no different than Rachel's, Nicole's, Chris's, Lawrence's and all the rest. She does exactly the same thing they do, day after day, night after night. Unlike them, she just happens to do it while black, which is the only thing you object to.

Jason Johnson subbing for Joy last night. Poor Joy - she was leaving 30 Rock in the early am w/pals Nicolle, Rachel and Brian after hosting the Biden speech analysis when she accidentally leaned back against the elevator doors as they were closing. Rumor has it that her Shirley Temple wiglet was snatched off by the closing doors and ended up going all the way down to the basement! Needless to say Joy was in a spin - or so it was alledgedly reported.
Don't be surprised if Joy shows up Friday wearing one of those Ava Gabor 'Grab-n-Go' wigs that were all the rage back in the 70's. Joy would really be wise to have a backup wig (or 3) should another calamity befall her.
by Anonymous | reply 518 | April 30, 2021 1:25 PM |
If Joy’s wig really got snatched... she’ll have to go back to one of these stylish looks:
by Anonymous | reply 519 | April 30, 2021 2:13 PM |
R519 - God I hope not! Those hair don'ts are just not attractive - on any woman of color. Braided extension cords or Basket of Snakes hair 'styles' are just not stylish - at all. Many women of color choose these looks because they are considered 'ethnic' but very few can pull off this look w/o looking ridiculous. I think the natural Afro style is much more flattering to so many instead of the knotted up clothesline mess that is so prevalent today.

I bet they like he has such a huge online presence and a lot of clips from his show get millions of views. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him get his own daily show moved from peacock to msnbc. Maybe the Msnbc brass is as tired of two hours of Nicole as the viewers are.

Cable news ratings have been tanking for months now. I’m sure msnbc is looking to freshen things up. They really need to get them back in the studios (they’re all fully vaccinated and have been for awhile) and hire some new commentators. It’s time for Miss Maddow to leave her MA cabin and get her ass into work for her $10 million a year paycheck. And I am TIRED of people like Michael Steele, Eddie Glaude, Jason Johnson, Claire McCaskill, Donna Edwards, etc. They need some new blood.
