The Gays and Tennis: Part 68 wrapping up the AO and onto the post-AO swing

Osaka is now a 4-time slam winner: 2018 USO 2019 AO 2020 USO 2021 AO
Djokovic vs. Medvedev for the men's title.
Next week's tournaments are ready to go with events in Adelaide for the ladies and Cordoba, Montpellier and Singapore for the men

How the hell is Ashleigh Fucking Barty still ranked number one? Osaka, the holder of two Slams, is still only second and Barty, who hasn't won anything of note in two years, is still the top ranked player in the world?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | 02/20/2021 |
R1 it is annoying but Barty still has her 2019 points on due to the pandemic. I agree it's a travesty that she has many more weeks at #1 than Osaka or Venus. Barty is a decent player but not an all-time great

match between osaka and brady was NOT of the highest quality.... way too streaky from both players....
like to see osaka do well on the clay and the grass next.....

Will Swiatek's ranking plunge when she doesn't defend her RG title in June? I guess 90% of her points are from her fluke RG run.

If he wasn't such an ass, Medvedev could almost be cute.

Finally saw some of the Granny vs Bridge Troll match. Granny Vee seems a little thicker and more full figured compared to her former, lean self. Is Granny pregnant? Is Great Auntie Ree about to become Auntie Ree Ree?

I think Medvedev is cute, and I like his whole enfant-terrible persona. Med for the win!

It's the way Andreescu plays. Check her scores all week long at the tournament she played after losing at the AO. She kept going long 3 setters. Her body isn't ready for all those marathons

Medvedev isn't bad looking but he's way too skinny, I hate the mole on his face and he's an asshole

by Anonymous | reply 15 | 02/20/2021 |
R6 By that time Swiatek will be a solid top 10. She is one of the best players on the circuit and one with the highest potential.
And if she holds her nerves at Roland Garros she'll get a deep run because at her best she is probably the best claycourter out there.
She is not Ostapenko
by Anonymous | reply 17 | 02/20/2021 |
Hopefully Bianca's problems won't be serious. She was out of the circuit for too long and she is playing most of her matches in long three sets on not the best weather conditions.
She needs time to be competitive again

Medvedev's cool. He's intelligent, thoughtful, his interviews are interesting and often funny and he's one hell of a player. I don't find him attractive at all but there's something about him. He just seems like a nice bloke.
Maybe I should just shut my fuck up.

Medvedev has quite the 'fivehead' because of his receding hairline. I hope he wins though
Despite playing only 1 match, Benoit Paire hit most double faults of all male players at the AO (23)

Is Barty a lez? Did Sam Stosur ever come out or is she still pretending to be straight? Is it the water in Oz that all the major Aussie women except Yvonne Gollagong have been gay? Turnbull, Stosur, Barty, Court and even the imported Aussies like Hanna Mandlikova, every single one a rug muncher.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | 02/20/2021 |
Stosur is married (with a woman) and they have a baby, so no, she is not pretending to be straight (in fact she never pretended to be straight).
And no, surprisingly Barty is not a lesbian, the same with Brady.

by Anonymous | reply 32 | 02/20/2021 |
R30 She is one of the most talented players out there and she can play on any surface (she was Wimbledon junior champion).
And of course her RG run was not a fluke, it was one of the more dominant performances ever and she crushed Halep and Kenin in her way to the title
by Anonymous | reply 33 | 02/20/2021 |
The women's final was not a pretty match. Very few decent rallies, most points were like 3-5 shots, and more ended with UEs than winners (excepting serve winners). It was a bit of a bash-fest. But give Naomi credit, she did it better.
Med is uncanny with his shots like young Rafa. His defense is incredible and he manufactures winners out of nothing. I don't know if he's on PEDs or anything else, but his play is crazy good. He could give Novak serious fight. Med Team.

So I’m hoping for a good match tonight - no matter what I hope it’s close - dare we hope for 5 sets? Tits Out has never lost an AO final and is going for his 3rd consecutive. But Medvedev is on a streak and hasn’t lost to a top 10 player in months. I think he’ll put up a good fight at the very least. Fingers crossed it’s a good one.
In any case I need to get back to some normal sleep patterns...

Djokovic is still the most dominant hardcourt player. Thiem couldn't get it done last year AO though he was close and then benefitted at the USO from Djokovic's dq and Nadal/Federer absence. Now Medvedev is not looking like a top 20 player.
I guess #NextGen is still going to be confined to winning Masters which is good but not great.

Mens tennis is so dull. Should I check back in 3 or 4 years to see if someone else wins? Unless Djokovic hits another staff member with something to get kicked out.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | 02/21/2021 |
No use R80. Eight years from now Nadal will still be winning Roland Garros, somehow "magically" out lasting men half his age or a third of his age in grueling five setters on the clay. Novaxx will similarly somehow outrun and outlast much younger men and win the AO for the 15th time.
Judy Murray will still be pleasuring herself with Andy's Wimbledon trophy and insisting that her lover, I mean, son was part of a Big 4 of tennis as though Misery Spacey is even worthy of being in the same room as Novaxxx, Gramps Hissy Fit and Pedal.

And most next gen players are over the age any of the big 3 won their first GS (some of them way over)
by Anonymous | reply 86 | 02/21/2021 |
Thiem only won it because Djokovic got defaulted. That final between him and Zverev was embarrassingly bad.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | 02/21/2021 |
Djokovic was not going to win the US Open. He was hysterical just because he was losing the first set againts Carreño.
And Thiem played that bad because he had a problem with dealing he was the favourite, he played very well till that final
by Anonymous | reply 88 | 02/21/2021 |
R88, but what doesn't upset him? One bad set doesn't mean you're not going to win the whole thing. Djokovic dropped a number of sets this time around.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | 02/21/2021 |
But generally he reserves the raquet smashing for the times the match gets complicated. Against Carreño he didn't even lost the first set.
He was playing pretty bad and he knew he was not going to win (and it's quite easy to know that his level in US Open rarely matches his level in Australia, he has less US Open titles than Nadal)
by Anonymous | reply 90 | 02/21/2021 |

R52 he bugs the shit out of me too. I suspect he's meant to be the polished voice among the commentators. Johnny Mac is fun and has a lot of personal experiences to share but he can just yap and yap if someone isn't there to reel him in, his brother is no better and just a cringey cornball of annoying tics "the droppa" which I assume he dropped a few years ago after feedback though it will slip out or used if he's feeling cheeky. Then you have prissy, dainty Clffie Drysdale and the spastic motor mouth of Brad Gilbert and irritating Help coach talking about his pupil during a men's match. I'm guessing we are slapped with Fowler because he actually speaks in measured complete sentences and you can actually make out the words.

I just hope someone starts beating the big 3 before they decide to retire or end up with career-ending injuries. Until Thiem wins second slam with them in the draw, his USO win will have an asterisk next to it.
The way Medvedev played the final, he probably would have lost to Nadal so he should thank Tsitsipas that he didn't have to face him.
men's tennis is not fun anymore. It needed new young slam winners 7 years ago. It's not a problem having the big 3 in the mix for slams as they're obviously the best ever but it is a very bad look for the tour 2 guys into their mid 30s are outright dominating slams.
1 of the younger guys is going to need to step up this year and stop them at at least 1 of the remaining slams
by Anonymous | reply 100 | 02/21/2021 |
[quote] If you think men's tennis is dull because the Big 3, who clearly are the best in history, keep winning then maybe you shouldn't watch.
"Best in history" is highly subjective. Even if it were true it does not preclude the possibility of the lack of any competition and the utter predictability of men's tennis making it really dull and tedious. Not to mention the slowing down of surfaces to make all majors the same rallies of baseline attrition over and over again.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | 02/21/2021 |

R103 Catching them won't be that easy.
Right now on RG he is clearly behing not only Nadal but Thiem too. He didn't won three GS in a year since 2015 and i doubt he'll win them this year.
His chances depend of the young players, not only to defeat him but to cause him trouble enough to reach tired the final rounds but if nothing changes sooner or later he'll do it becuase the next gen is not a strong one.
Unless Sinner really rise pretty fast i doubt any of the 96-00 generation is mentally strong enough to compete on a final against any big 3 (of course they could lose before reaching the final)

by Anonymous | reply 107 | 02/21/2021 |
There is no Big 3 in the current game. Fed at fortyish is unlikely to take another GS. At most one more Wimbledon, and that looks iffy. And Nadal at almost 35 looks to be finally succumbing to the beating he's given his body for two decades. I'd peg him for one or two more GS titles. By April Fed will fall to #8 or so unless he has a miraculous resurgence.

ANDY MURRAY: NEXT GEN 'NOT PARTICULARLY CLOSE' TO TOPPLING NOVAK DJOKOVIC, RAFAEL NADAL AND FEDERER
Andy Murray is set to make his return to the full ATP tour for the first time this year in Montpellier where he faces world number 83 Egor Gerasimov in the opening round of an ATP 250 event. He was asked to give his thoughts on the Australian Open. The Scot explained how far off he thinks the next generation of tennis stars are to the likes of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.
Former British number one Andy Murray does not think the next generation of tennis players are "particularly close" to challenging the likes of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer for Grand Slam titles....

R133 People keep gushing to the big 3 but big 3 don't bring new fans anymore. Atp need new champions and better if they are charismatic.
I'm pretty sure people will love a big 3 member winning a GS if there wasn't just like what happen at every GS. It's totally predictable and boring.
But next gen are more worried about getting new followers on social media. To be honest i wouldn't be surprised if the generation between 96-00 never reign over the atp. If the big 3 keep winning they will probably be replaced by younger players
by Anonymous | reply 141 | 02/24/2021 |
Federer has reached exactly one GS final since he won the 2018 AO. He can't legitimately still be considered a factor. Thiem's been in four GS finals over the same interim. By 2022 it's likely that we'll see players who were born from '93-'01 dominate. We're already seeing Thiem, Medvedev and Tsitsipas in the top 5, with Rublev and Zverev not far behind. FAA, Shapo and Sinner's games should mature to the point that they're right up there with them by then. Meanwhile Djokovic and Nadal will be closer to 40 than 30, and even they aren't immune to creaking bones and failing synapses even if they're pumped full of PEDs.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | 02/24/2021 |
R142 I have serious doubts that people like Medvedev or Zverev will have lasting careers, their body types spell serious injury before reaching the 30.
With the exception of Felix, all the hyped players have an age where most great players already won their first GS.
Djokovic and Nadal are great but they are pretty far from their peak and this young players are still unable to challenge them at the best of five sets.
And Roger, well, we'll see if he is a factor or not. He is 39 and he is out of the field for more than a year, i doubt he'll be a factor for a while (with luck he'll be back on track by Wimbledon which will be probably his last chance to win a GS)
by Anonymous | reply 143 | 02/24/2021 |
I hope you're right about Medvedev and Zverev. I wouldn't lose any sleep over those two plus Djokovic being permanently out of the game.

Adelaide: Swiatek dominates Bencic to win her second singles title.
Singapore: Popryin upsets Cilic to reach the final. I think Cilic is done as a contender for big titles. He seems have hit a wall both game-wise and physically the last 2 years.
by Anonymous | reply 149 | Last Saturday at 1:04 AM |
R148, he would need a very good ("fixed") draw for that to happen. All the big servers capable of outserving him on a good day would need to be in the other side of the draw and Djoko would need to lose early. Djoko has a perfect 3-0 record against him in Wimbledon finals and Gramps could not close him out even with two match points on his own serve in the 2019 final.
I think Gramps Fed's says of winning 7 best of 5 matches in a row are over. If PEDal overtakes him with his 21st Slam win at RG, Gramps will become desperate to claw back into the lead and that will put immense pressure on him.
by Anonymous | reply 150 | Last Saturday at 1:31 AM |
R150 Not that much. Unlike Nadal or Djokovic who are not really real grass court players (without the slow down of the Wimbledon court the story would be very different) Federer is a real grass court player so he is way less vulnerable on the first rounds were the grass is not deteriorated and the court is way faster.
So no, he doesn't need a rigged draw to get deep in the draw if he is healthy and in good form.
His problem is that he seems to have problems keeping the focus on the match, so he plays great for a while and pretty bad after that, and that always means defeat if you face a very good player.
Nadal is having some problems closing tight matches now, something that didn't happened in the past (he used to win all his tight matches but not anymore). Keep focused is more and more difficult when you get older

R211 That doesn't change anything because obviously i was not talking just about that match. Felix went from outside of top 100 to the top 20 in barely six months, after that his progression stopped and he showed serious mental blocks on big moments and sometimes a bad attitude on court (his match against Shapovalov on the US Open was atrocious and he seemed to not care at all).
What i said is that maybe a less explossive break into the top 20 would be better for him. And frankly i don't think he'll be as big as he was promoted when he appeared, he has the physical and the groundstrokes but he lacks a lot of things right now to be a great player, of course he'll improve, but the fact that he lowered his level in all his seven finals is not a good sgin
