What does Datalounge Think Of REDDIT?
After reading people reference Reddit in a few threads this afternoon I'm left wondering how many Dataloungers use Reddit and what subs do you visit?
I go there for discussions about tv shows, football, Broadway.
I have also gotten suggestions on tech I was looking to buy by doing a search for whatever product I was looking for.

I mod a sub. people are rude, and act entitled. But the community aspect is nice.

I used to use it as a teen, but haven't been there in years. I dont spend a lot of time on the internet. I check data lounge every day, but rarely post - not that I have been able to in the last month anyway. I dont have twitter and the only social media I use is instagram.
I find reddit skews in several directions I dont like; too young, old nerds, girls who think they are edgy for being into 'boys' stuff like tech, beaded bros and narcissistic attentionwhores. I also dont like the format of the replies AT ALL.

Ask Reddit can be interesting and r/history. A lot of its a cesspool of whoever makes the first dirty double entendre gets 2k upvotes though, you have to be picky.

Reddit is like black people, OP. Some are good. Some are bad.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 26, 2021 9:38 PM
|
That's very reddit of you r6.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | January 26, 2021 9:42 PM

R7 Just pointing out how some here think all of Reddit is bad just because of a few bad experiences kind of like how DL racists think all blacks are criminal thugs for the same reason.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | January 26, 2021 9:44 PM
|
But r6 you used Black people to make your point which is racist.
It implies that the dichotomy only exists in Black people.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 26, 2021 9:47 PM

R9 See R8.
But I suspect my point will go over your head yet again. Let me guess. Public schooling?
by Anonymous | reply 10 | January 26, 2021 9:50 PM
|
No not public schooling, being Black in America.
No matter how clever you think your statement was r6 r10 it still is a statement that suggests that only Black people be scrutinized as good or bad.
May not bother you my elite white clever brother but it bothers me.

I only ever read it without having an account. I wanted to use the handle The_Vicious_Fish (I'm a Pisces, & known for my cynicism) and it was already taken. So, I didn't sign up. But I also don't need any more distractions in my daily routine.

I like some of the smaller subs and like nsfw stuff, but otherwise the more popular stuff is exhausting and many people are arrogant and smug.

I hate that they've essentially crippled your ability to use the mobile site via browser. That said, RedditIsFun seems to be the least privacy invasive app option.
I like these subs: r/AnimalsBeingDerps r/TheCatTrapIsWorking r/UnlikelyFriends r/Zoomies
r/Keep_Track r/RussiaLago r/ConspiracyPsychology r/LeopardsAteMyFace
r/Masks4All r/AskHistorians r/AskSocialScience r/geology r/ InternetIsBeautiful

Is there a way to permanently have comments appear in chronological order? Sick of it always being stuck on "best" and having to change it so I can follow the comments.

Some of the subreddits I browse include r/eyebleach; r/OldSchoolCool; r/tifu and r/DadReflexes.
Does anyone else watch Reddit YouTube channels? I like rSlash’s and Fresh’s videos. The former’s voice acting is top notch. 😛

We just did thread a month ago.
Here is my take:
Reddit is fine in theory. But three things I hate about the platform:
1. It's a huge circle jerk. This is directly related to the voting system. A single downvote leads to a piling-on effect and dissent within subs is not tolerated, by design. After 5 or 6 DVs replies are hidden.
2. Each sub has particular "rules". Nothing worse than typing up a thoughtful OP, hitting "post," and then immediately seeing " this post has been removed." Certain words or phrases trigger an instantaneous deletion. These "rules" are esoteric and it's hard to know why, exactly, your post was removed.
3. In my experience, most subs do not allow any discussion about or criticism of the sub itself. I suppose this is also true of DL to a certain degree, but on Reddit it seems much worse. So, for example, you can't discuss the arbitrary rules referenced at 2. Mods have too much power and can ban users and delete posts on a whim.
I tried Reddit for several months during the pandemic to kill time when I was stuck at home. But ultimately, 1, 2, and 3 made it too unpalatable for me.

I get confused by the thread design - I consider myself tech-savvy but find I sometimes circle back on the same thread when I meant to follow a string of comments.

I feel like reddit is propaganda, or at least the front page stuff is. Very echo-chamber-y. I used to love it and posted there a lot from 2012-2016 but I started to think a lot of the posters arent real people but troll farm workers
by Anonymous | reply 24 | January 27, 2021 2:28 AM

r22 Datalounge is infinitely better
Some of my reasons:
1. DL bumps threads to the top of the page. The 2015 bump troll notwithstanding, this means that robust conversations continue for days or weeks or even months ("Do you find Blanche DuBois a sympathetic character?" is a recent example of this.) Reddit posts have a shelf life of a day or two. They keep falling down the page (unless they are stickied by the mods - and that rarely happens.). DL is far superior for serious exchanges.
2. While no forum is truly anonymous (Muriel has my CC info, of course), it's a lot easier to be anonymous on DL than it is on Reddit. Any other user can see your entire posting history on Reddit, so if you've posted for two or three years, all those posts are discoverable. If you want to ask an anonymous question, you have to create another account. It gets tiresome.
3. I feel as if DL has its own little subculture, with its own inside jokes and jargon. I can find threads on entertainment, porn, politics, history, literature, travel, fashion, and life questions here (for example, the recent threads on how to cope with the death of a parent.) Yes, we have trolls. But the number of thoughtful replies outweighs the trollish ones.
4. No other place on the internet makes me laugh like the DL. I tend to be too liberal with my W&Ws, but there are some truly witty bitches here.

A topic looks interesting so you click on it. Someone has posted an interesting question or opinion and the first answer is someone quoting a cartoon they saw when they were 9 years old in 2017.
There are 129 responses quoting the same sentence from the same cartoon, but with one word replaced.
Then someone makes a reference to a video game.
There are 94 two-sentence responses about the same video game.
You forget the topic.

Someone asks a question or states a fact that might be medical. There are 47 answers. Each of those answers has 32-111 of their own responses.
They’re all about headaches.
The worst headaches. Brain tumors, panic attacks, aneurysms, migraines, cluster headaches, allergy headaches, orgasm headaches (they were all masturbating. It is Reddit, after all), metastasized cancer, pinched nerves, encephalitis, meningitis.
Then someone will state they developed an opiate addiction because of their headaches. Ten thousand responses ranging from “I found my uncle dead 5 days after he ODd on fentanyll to “You can cure yourself with shrooms, bro.”

In order to see replies to poster statements, you have to reload the page.
Someone’s posts a thread
Someone answers.
There are 65 replies to the answer. You hit “see replies” and nothing happens. You reload and get an icon of space baby on an asteroid. You reload page again. You’re transported back to the question on the top of the page. Now you have to scroll all responses til you find the one whose replies you want to read.

The posters are idiots who cannot stay on topic. No, I don't want to read 2000 comments about something that barely relates to the news story just posted. And the worst part is the unrelated comments are always upvoted by the idiot posters who imagine them to be hilarious ( they are not).

I’m tired of seeing so many “designer” cat and dog breeds on some subreddits, like eyebleach. Not sure what the term is, but they look genetically modified. I’ll upvote someone adopting a mix-breed from the pound any day!
I recently joined Survivor, but I usually just read recaps of the most recent episode. There are so many stans and superfans over there, with their own abbreviations and terminology, who relive every episode of every season, and all these what-ifs. Really weird.

There are subreddits I retreat from almost immediately because the vibe is so off, like you just wandered into a giant vape cloud masquerading as a discussion. Trolls and faux experts that fly under the radar there would be clocked by DLers much faster.
