They make DL look easy to navigate.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | December 8, 2020 11:52 PM |
I’ve found some things in it by using google, but I don’t understand how Reddit works.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | December 8, 2020 11:53 PM |
Last night there was a post in a home improvement reddit looking for help on protecting drywall around an indoor glory hole.
After reading that, I assumed DL was there en masse.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | December 8, 2020 11:55 PM |
I don't understand how people know that there's a post within their expertise. Do you sign up for certain topics?
I also don't understand Quora, though I find good info there using google.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | December 8, 2020 11:56 PM |
I can't understand it either.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | December 8, 2020 11:56 PM |
The comments on news and historical articles are always so obnoxious. There will inevitably be about 1k comments and the first 500 will be people writing about something only vaguely related to the topic at hand. The off topic comments should be at the very bottom. Fucking spazzes.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | December 8, 2020 11:57 PM |
Reddit is far easier to navigate than this site. Are you all really old? Reddit has a much younger user base and you join subreddits that interest you. Reddit is really good for porn if you know what to follow. Its also good to find groups with similar interests. if you like big cocks, big rocks, cars, muscular men, femme boys etc. reddit has everything you need.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | December 9, 2020 12:01 AM |
The same dino-'mos probably cannot figure out how apps work or how to receive e-transfers. Technology passed these old girls by. Waaaaaaaaaaaay by. There is nothing complicated about Reddit. You sign up then comment on various threads. No different than here.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | December 9, 2020 12:10 AM |
It skews incredibly young. I used to enjoy it more before when it felt like there was a wider variety of posters from different age ranges and levels of life experience. Some of the subreddits I follow are filled with college-age kids, and now I just feel like the Dad there. 😂
by Anonymous | reply 9 | December 9, 2020 12:11 AM |
I have never understood how it works and get lost in it. Therefore I avoid it. I'm 55 and don't usually have any problems figuring things out so it's not that. There is just too much shit to wade through and I'm not interested enough. DL just seems like any old forum.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | December 9, 2020 12:12 AM |
It's similar to the old usenet groups. You subscribe to topics you're interested in. And yes, it's dominated by not terribly bright 12 year olds.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | December 9, 2020 12:18 AM |

Coming from a person who doesn't understand what happens to the world when you close the drapes.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | December 9, 2020 12:19 AM |
I'm not an everyday Reddit poster, but I like the sheer vastness of it. There's a community for everything that could possibly interest you on there.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | December 9, 2020 12:28 AM |
And does Quora work the same way?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | December 9, 2020 12:28 AM |
R14, I believe Quora is more of a Q & A forum, like the old Yahoo Answers, where someone asks one question and the rest are responses to the question.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | December 9, 2020 12:58 AM |
What's so fucking difficult about it? You create an account and join the subreddits that interest you. The content fro those subs shows up on your main page. Click the link or scroll on. It ain't rocket science
by Anonymous | reply 16 | December 9, 2020 1:01 AM |
Reddit skews very, very young. Teens and college=aged kids.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | December 9, 2020 1:02 AM |
There's a limit to how many message boards a person wants to be a part of. I like DL because we're gay. I like my sailing chat board because those bitches are hilarious. I don't know that I need to be checking five or ten boards every day.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | December 9, 2020 1:05 AM |
There are several subreddits about my employer. I read all of them and, sometimes, can ascertain exactly who posts what. Especially when they are about workplace grievances, perceived injustices, pettiness, gossip. Once in a great while I recognize one of my direct reports.
Another vice president got wind of something about him on Reddit and he instructed the IT division to find out who in the organization read or posted to Reddit from their desks and laptops owned by the organization. The IT guys basically told him to fuck off. But I told my direct reports that this guy had asked IT to do this for him, and for them to be judicious about using Reddit at work or from work laptops, especially during working hours.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | December 9, 2020 1:07 AM |
It's difficult and tedious to follow as r6 said. Irrelevant comments seem to show up at the top. And , yes, it's filled with teenagers.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | December 9, 2020 1:48 AM |
There are a few decent subreddits but I avoid it for the most part. Every single post is followed by about 550 comments that are completely fucking off topic, particularly in the news subreddit. Most of which are try hard comments attempting to be funny. I have to scroll and scroll to find anything DIRECTLY related to the subject at hand.
The other thing I can't get past is how absolutely suburban white trash many redditors are. Everybody has some convoluted story of being accused of rape by their ex girlfriend, who is also their stepsister, or of being arrested for multiple DUIs. Or fighting their abusive ex for custody of their 4 out of wedlock kids, 2 of which were fathered by their exes best friend. I imagine many of the commenters are named Shawn or Brynnli in real life.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | December 9, 2020 1:50 AM |
R17, yeah. I used to follow a certain sports subreddit somewhat closely, until over time it became apparent how young the sub had become -- nobody had any knowledge or interest in the sport pre-2008, or if they did, it was considered 'vintage,' lol.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | December 9, 2020 2:02 AM |
Just like everything else in the world, you old dinos know absolutely nothing about Reddit. It is not just full of teens. And I have never come across a thread where everything was off topic. There are like a million posters of dick pics on Reddit and very few are of teens.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | December 9, 2020 2:17 AM |
r23 if all you're looking at is porn then you don't understand this thread. It's about various topics of discussion, not porn.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | December 9, 2020 2:26 AM |
I've already posted, but I agree with what some others have stated. Posts that are useful on Reddit usually are overlooked, hidden and buried by endless posts that make no sense. So one walks away from a topic confused and knowing less than they did beforehand. At least that's been my experience.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | December 9, 2020 2:51 AM |
R23, you're right that it's not just teens, because there are also a startling number of posters there who type like they're 17 -- even though they're older and probably should know better.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | December 9, 2020 3:01 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 34 | December 9, 2020 3:46 AM |
Yes.. you upvote or downvote comments like WW or FF and you get karma if people like your posts. There’s a subreddit for Datalounge that has a smattering of posts.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | December 9, 2020 3:57 AM |
The Datalounge subreddit is mostly just one bitter eldergay complaining about DL becoming too left-wing.

Hey, R37. I resemble that comment. (except have recently entered my 40s so it's even more shameful. fuck it tho my dog is awesome)
Fwiw I find Reddit very similar to Youtube - incredibly useful if you've very tightly curated what you're subscribed to and akin to installing a sewage outflow pipe directly into your own living quarters if you haven't. The big/popular subs ARE populated by a rather young, white, male, straight crew but there are literally thousands of other subreddits that aren't like that.
One thing I will say about that site, and related to the comments regarding suburban trashiness, above, is if subscribing to any of the SFW "porn" subs (i.e. houseporn, roomporn etc.), prepare to be genuinely horrified by the utter lack of taste (good, bad or otherwise) of the vast majority of posters - matched in most cases only by their vitriol towards anyone who might mildly like/dislike something they dislike/like.

I took an investment class last year and the instructor (an investment adviser guy who liked to call himself professor-eyeroll) had us each upload a 10 item portfolio that we perceived as balanced yet safe. He had some proprietary software that would show us how we couldn’t pull it off, and needed to use him. I pulled a portfolio off Reddit that looked good and sent it along. That portfolio slayed his model portfolio. He contacted me and asked about my methodology, lol!
by Anonymous | reply 43 | December 9, 2020 8:53 AM |

Otherwise, it's only good for porn.

I enjoy reddit. It keeps pushing their app at me. Should I download it? I don't like downloading unnecessary apps so I stick to my browser
by Anonymous | reply 46 | December 9, 2020 9:55 AM |
I love Reddit. I use the app and have no trouble navigating (and I’m 50 and not particularly tech savvy). In the subs I frequent, the commenters are mostly intelligent. Sometimes you get a real wacko replying, and there are plenty of flyover fraus and very stupid people.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | December 9, 2020 10:03 AM |
I’ve noticed an uptick in those dumb bots who reply to comments. There’s one that replies with factoids about sunflowers when it spots the word “sunflower”. And one that corrected a grammar mistake (not mine, haha) and I was hoping to see one that corrects “could of”; haven’t seen it yet.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | December 9, 2020 10:06 AM |
I dislike it. Its always the same fucking jokes again and again. Many subreddits are way to clichish and the moment you say anything different from the main opinion you get downvoted.

Reddit is organized like a bulletin board from the late 1990s, R7. Your "yer all old" crap doesn't apply here.

Reddit is populated by teenagers who have a troubled home life and/or an IQ < 90.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | December 9, 2020 12:16 PM |
Reddit is fine in theory. But three things I hate about the platform:
1. It's a huge circle jerk. This is directly related to the voting system. A single downvote leads to a piling-on effect and dissent within subs is not tolerated, by design. After 5 or 6 DVs replies are hidden.
2. Each sub has particular "rules". Nothing worse than typing up a thoughtful OP, hitting "post," and then immediately seeing " this post has been removed." Certain words or phrases trigger an instantaneous deletion. These "rules" are esoteric and it's hard to know why, exactly, your post was removed.
3. In my experience, most subs do not allow any discussion about or criticism of the sub itself. I suppose this is also true of DL to a certain degree, but on Reddit it seems much worse. So, for example, you can't discuss the arbitrary rules referenced at 2. Mods have too much power and can ban users and delete posts on a whim.
I tried Reddit for several months during the pandemic to kill time when I was stuck at home. But ultimately, 1, 2, and 3 made it too unpalatable for me.

R38, that may be true, but the founders and original posters of Reddit are my age, so just remember that you're on an old AF forum.
R62, posters over there tend to be overly-earnest. Typical humor/discourse of DL would probably be considered too caustic and dark over there.

Social Media IS supposed to be cliquish in the sense that you are supposed to look and find like-minded people online who share your interests and opinions.
I mean, let's face it: There is no social media platform where actual civil discourse can happen since all social media platforms have a trolls and haters problem.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | December 9, 2020 10:06 PM |
Most young people know better than to hang out on Reddit with the trolls.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | December 9, 2020 10:28 PM |
There is a lot I’d to say about reddit. I could write 10 paragraphs. Reddit was an excellent forum, I’d even say the best, up u til about 5 years ago, but too much right-wing propaganda slips through the cracks.
They don’t challenge these foreign born narratives that seek to divide Americans. In other words, even they couldn’t stop the wave of propaganda coming from overseas that has infested every platform.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | December 9, 2020 10:54 PM |
Which is ironic because Reddit was the best place to try to fight the propaganda. The right-wing has neutralized it, to some degree. I’d like to see its return to the gatekeeper of truth. It was never perfect, but was, at its core, the users anyway, were always searching for the truth, whatever that might be.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | December 9, 2020 10:57 PM |
Also, the upvoting system can be taken over by right wing bots, it seems. But they don’t use it in every thread. They are getting more and more subtle. The bots are learning.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | December 9, 2020 10:59 PM |
The comment system is weird. A lot of people just tells jokes about the comments. It's a lot of young guys riffing on the comments
The smaller subreddits are fine, but the larger ones aren't that good. The larger ones don't lead to discussions
by Anonymous | reply 75 | December 9, 2020 11:54 PM |
I finally got into Reddit a few years ago after a friend was sending threads I should check out. I would click and not understand how to navigate it or get annoyed... at some point I guess I just started visiting it on my own. I found I only like reading it on mobile, I don't like the format on a laptop/desktop. Now I will scroll through on topics I follow, and I like to select "new posts" for each group. It's a good place to get advice, or read stories, find support. There's probably more subreddits than I can imagine. It does bother me that it trends so young (I'm in my 40's) but there's still a variety of people who contribute and probably lurk.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | December 10, 2020 1:26 AM |

[quote] There is nothing complicated about Reddit.
Demonstrably untrue. I use Reddit all the time for marketing products I sell. It’s an aggressively shitty social website.
Which doesn't surprise me in the least.
All social media is dominated by women — except Reddit, which is dominated by younger straight males. You can just see them, wanting a site they use to be as spare as the sub-basement at a high school where the janitor keeps the vomit sawdust ... and about as attractive. You can also see them wanting its use to be hard to figure out, so they can feel smug about having figured out how to use it, unlike the “olds” or chicks. And of course they can figure it out — as millennials or gen z they have a *lot* of free time on their hands or sketchy tech jobs that don’t require much actual work.
Also really hate the way the comments cascade.
Is it any wonder Reddit is the Vatican City of the incel movement, and was the chief executive office of revenge porn for so long?
by Anonymous | reply 78 | December 10, 2020 1:41 AM |
I think we all can agree that how to use Reddit is incomprehensible.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | December 10, 2020 9:21 AM |
I am trying to get into Reddit but there is a fundamental thing I am struggling with, and I'm not sure if it is user error on my end or a design feature on Reddit's end. So my starting point on Reddit is to define subreddits and then browse within those. Is that right? Does Reddit have some form of master board like the DL front page that shows all new threads sorted by time? I get the advantage of subreddits, but I also like DL's front page a lot because it makes me aware of threads that I may find curious even if I normally wouldn't look for it (like this thread for example).

[quote]I’d like to see its return to the gatekeeper of truth. It was never perfect, but was, at its core, the users anyway, were always searching for the truth, whatever that might be.
What, reddit? Are you kidding me?
There was never a thread on any subreddit of note that did not have multiple threads devoted to propaganda. A decade ago it was MRA propaganda; lately, it's been political propaganda. Now it's morphed more into an EST factory where people are trying to go viral by asking something stupid in AITA or a similar group, plus lots of subreddits that steal content. I hardly follow anyone on Twitter, 200 people and half are inactive, yet four of them have had their tweets stolen on reddit from people who then go on to pretend to be them.
Reddit is like Fark and Metafilter before them: full of people who want attention and will do anything to get it. Truth doesn't matter to more than maybe one-half of one percent of 'em.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | December 10, 2020 12:11 PM |
It does have a front page, and that will have the most popular and newsworthy posts, as well as the most prominent posts on the subs you subscribe to and/or post on.
I don’t usually look at that because I just go to Reddit to post products. I go the the subs, post, and leave.

I hate that I have to keep clicking to see further replies. Just show me everything, like on DL. It’s not as annoying if the replies just open up on the same page but sometimes it opens up a new page to show you further replies and sometimes it’s just one more reply! Ugh. by Anonymous | reply 92 | December 12, 2020 10:50 PM |
I don't understand why people are so confused about it. It's just a big open forum. What would be a "Category" on an old school forum are called "Subreddits" on there. You can find Subreddits on practically anything you might be interested, from your favorite bands, your favorite TV shows, Cooking tips, Political stuff, etc...
You can also start your own Subreddits, which you become the moderator of, so you can weed out anyone trolling it.
Also, it's not uncommon for Celebrities to pop in on there and start an posts like "Hi I'm so and so, director of this movie, AMA" (ask me anything).
by Anonymous | reply 93 | December 12, 2020 11:03 PM |
R93 that's far too complicated to just search for a recipe. DL and others are very simple why not reddit?
by Anonymous | reply 94 | December 12, 2020 11:16 PM |
R94, if all you're searching for is one basic thing, or a discussion on same, do what you would do with the DL: Google the item with "reddit". Just like this beloved forum, the search function at Reddit is, uh, unique. Google works much better.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | December 12, 2020 11:50 PM |
R95 continued:
Sorry! Hit Post too soon.
Anyway, for example, I just googled "best scrambled eggs Reddit" and got a full page of hits leading to discussions of techniques and recipes for scrambled eggs. There are probably more pages, but one was enough.
That, in a nutshell - or perhaps eggshell - is the problem with Reddit. There are so many users, representing every interest in the world, that any popular topic will be overwhelmed with comments. As there is minimal moderation in most subs, the conversation tends toward the least common denominator. Or, if it's a specialized or controversial topic, then those with an ax to grind will dominate the conversation. (Pro tip: Don't mention the Armenian genocide. Just don't.)
I agree with others that for smaller topics, Reddit is great. For amateur porn - especially pictures of naked men - it's the best thing on the internet. For topics of broad current interest, it's a mess. Still, I can't help but love any forum or message board that clings to the now old-fashioned idea that people might want to be able to have discussions anonymously. Along with the Datalounge, it is to be treasured with all its faults.
by Anonymous | reply 96 | December 13, 2020 12:08 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 97 | December 13, 2020 12:29 AM |
I should add, one nice thing in particular about Reddit, is keeping topics within specific subreddits, vs putting them all into one feed, like it is on here. I can go to a specific sub about Photoshop for example, and it's not flooded with BRF, Markle, Soap opera crap, Theatere Gossip, Chalamet stans, etc...
by Anonymous | reply 98 | December 13, 2020 3:40 PM |

I think I had to create an account at one point to post, and now, they are a real pain in the ass, always sending me updates which I just marked as spam. I get more out of Datalounge with its variety of readers and objectives. Quora and Reddit are far too extremist for me.

R102 you can make a Reddit account without supplying your email address.

I know people like to shit on Reddit but the site is only as good or as bad as the subreddit" you inhabit.
For example, I signed up to a screenwriting subreddit and there's some great information on there with people who are actually in the business (producers who I've verified). When you make a post, you tag it as something like "need advice" or "script request" to make it easier for people to find. You can chose to sort threads by reverse chronological order or what's getting the most attention. It takes a little while to figure it out but once you do it's very easy.
I don't understand why otherwise intelligent people think it's so complicated. And don't believe those who claim Reddit is some kind of incel central either. You actually have to go searching for that shit if you want to see it.

I like reddit, but use it mainly for porn and 'scary stories' stuff. I don't enjoy their brand of humor, however.

Depends on the subs you follow. The big ones like /news and /politics suck big donkey balls. They're either an echo chamber or attract the neanderthals. I prefer subs about specific hobbies, music jandras (*wink*) and bands and TV shows. It does skew younger, but that's a recent thing. I was on reddit 10 years ago and it was mostly people in their late 20s/30s escaping Fark.

One thing I do like about Reddit are the AMAs (Ask Me Anything). There have been some pretty interesting ones over the years.

Reddit isn't difficult to navigate at all.

Reddit's search functionality sucks, so if you really want to find something specific on there you need to search Reddit via Google, as another poster mentioned earlier. Just do a search on Google for something, and include "site:reddit.com" as part of your query. That will limit the search results only to pages Google has indexed on Reddit.
