No one needs a sequel to Call Me By Your Name. Nobody every needed that. Not us, not Armie, not Timmy. No one.

Even if you STILL love that movie, and aren't yet totally skeeved out by its predatory undertones, psychological implications, and the freaky director, you don't need a sequel to a story that has a perfect beginning, middle and end.

I actually do not believe this "sequel" was ever seriously on the table to begin with. It most likely only existed in drunken texts messages between Armie and Luca, the director. Call me by your cynicism, but it rang false to me, always. But it sure was a perfect devices to extend Armie's relevance post-CMBYN. This mythical sequel, once inserted into the news flow, could be brought up in interviews over and over again 'til the end of time. It is the film equivalent of a PR company priming interviewers to ask about the possibility of a Destiny's Child reunion in a promotional blitz for Kelly Rowland's her solo record (that no one would otherwise give a shit about, so we must never stop reminding people that Kelly Rowland was in Destiny's Child).

For Armie to be eternally fielding questions about a sequel that had almost ZERO chance - on a good day - to ever happen, the megafans of that movie are left with no other options than to conclude: "UntilI get to see my beloved Elio and Oliver together again, I will have to make do with watching 'Death On The Nile' and 'Beautiful Boy.'"

I have been generally pro-Effie (and the others) up until seeing that last batch of texts at R159. But I have a big problem right now concerning Effie using texting as the primary means of working through these issues.

“Processing” an issue, as it is called in couples’ therapy, cannot be productive if either party is “burning” I.e. engulfed or triggered into fight/flights. It sounds like Armie has had at least a little bit of experience in couples’ therapy and his young kitten has not. She was doing every single thing they tell you NOT to do in therapy when you are trying to communicate how someone has hurt you in a way that allows them to hear you and not just shut down or get defensive. Here’s some more of my observations (see next post):

1. They both use the words “talk” and “listen” repeatedly. But texting is not “talking” nor “listening.” It is reading. Reading without eye contact, voice inflection, or any other human markets that would allow true connection, empathy, healthy shame, epiphanies, resolution, or closure to emerge. It’s just basically the WORST way to communicate emotional content. 3. Men have logic-based brains. Men can’t always meet angry, hurt women in that subjective, poetic emotional floaty realm of intense emotionality. It’s just not how the male brain l, in general terms, is wired. Men can feel basic emotions like shame, regret, and other firms of “whoops I fucked up.” But it’s not going to be achieved by swirling around in emotional sludge for six straight hours (the amount of time they were texting). To ask this of a man is to ask the impossible - and to suffer.

4. She keeps going to an immature. guilt-trippy place: “I’ll just die then. You’d love that.” It’s overly dramatic and can’t possibly lead anywhere good. When he says “I want to hear you, you aren’t a burden, let’s figure this out, etc” she says “I don’t believe you.” Where is there left to go from there? If she could have just stated facts: “I feel traumatized by these sex encounter A B and C, I think he would have heard her. Because he was not ghosting her at this point. In fact, he was indulging her, texting on and on for pages. While with his kids, even. He even asked for a “cool-down period” (reasonable) and she would not agree to it.

This is a master-class in co-dependency. “ I hate you, don’t leave me.” Spinning around and around after it’s clear that the relationship is toxic and that every day you remain in it is detrimental to your mental health. I understand that Effie was in real distress. I get it. I’ve been there. But when you look to your perpetrator to also be your healer and source of comfort, you ARE going to suffer. A person that could hurt you so badly, that you feel permanently fucked up now, is not going to possess the skills to navigate that trauma with you. People with those emotional skills don’t inflict trauma on others in the first place. She needed to go “no contact” with him at a certain point, and instead seek other sources of support that were not him.

The co-dependent cannot let go though, even though the clinging causes as much suffering and feelings of powerlessness, as the original offending incident. Clinging to a married man with children, who you have determined has raped you physically, and has invalidated your integrity, is your personal mistake. It’s a rough lesson to learn. But part of growing up is taking accountability for all the ways we abandon ourselves. For acknowledging when make bad choices that end up not serving us.

Taking accountability for the part you play is not victim-blaming. It is EMPOWERING. It is part of what we call “adulting.” The child blames others exclusively. The adult has the integrity to say “I made some really bad choices - some really bad judgement calls. I did not listen to my inner voice which was screaming at me to walk away. I will take these lessons to heart, listen to that still small voice in the future, and never put myself in that position again.”

Trauma accumulates exponentially as long as we are maintaining a helpless victim stance. Effie must take actions to reclaim her power. Maddeningly,, she has a fewer options to reclaim her essential worth and integrity now than she had before she went public. She should continue intensive therapy to trace, face and erase the root causes that led to her maintaining a destructive four-year relationship with a married man and father. She needs to learn the why’s and the hows of how she came to find herself in such a terrible situation.

She could have asked Arnie to pay for her therapeutic costs at one time. I am sure that option is off the table though now that he is uninsurable for work and will be heading off on his own rehabilitation journey. She could still get the authorities involved. The fact that she has not, even now, seems to indicate that Effie would rather garner attention, throw tantrums, and maintain her victim stance, than to seek true justice and move forward.

I never paid much attention to Elizabeth before and she was too think but she’s a beautiful woman.

I get that she was only 20. I am not deriving joy from seeing the evidence of so many young broken women, with their whole lives in front of them, seeking comfort from their abuser. It’s very hard to observe that. I went of on an analytical tangent probably as much to ease my own discomfort as to lay out some sort of master blueprint for how things could/should have gone down with Armie and his victims. But I stand by the concept of personal accountability as a means of healing. Because I’ve been there. I had to shift the focus away from the emotional abuser, to my childhood conditioning that allowed me to accept abuse in the first place. I had to also learn healthy, constructive interpersonal communication because it had never been modeled to me.

We all have to learn to be more attuned to that inner voice of intuition that never errs. These types of lessons are typically most vividly absorbed through painful lived experience. It’s a wake up call to value your self more and to locate the internal road blocks to self-love.

He triggers the fuck out of me because I know well the feeling of being gaslit, invalidated, condescended to, indulged like I’m a child, having my concerns minimized, even mocked. Why did I accept that treatment? I was condition by childhood to accept it. For instance, I once gathered the confidence to confide to my mother that I was sexually abused by a caregiver when I was four. She laughed at me. She thought it was ridiculous and that I was exaggerating or that I mis-remembered. And that was the end of it. I was a teenager and I could only lick myself in my car snd scream. Ever day, scream in my car. it’s the worst feeling ever.

But when you keep going back to that samegaslighting, minimizing person person for comfort and closure, the pain of unmet need is amplified 1000% over. It’s a hard, painful lesson to learn emotional self-care. But it’s still valuable to learn.

I just really can’t stomach the idea of these young women not actually getting relief from their trauma and remaining stuck in that victimhood indefinitely. I want to see them all move forward productively and gain support, wisdom and healing.

Therefore, Effie was forced to communicate in a way that was available to her at the time - texting. She mentions that she'd tried to have this conversation with Armie many times, and had to pause the conversation before. It may be that texting was the only way to get him to communicate. Texting is also the method of communication that Armie agreed to. We don't know if Effie attempted to communicate with him another way (zoom, skype, FT) and perhaps tried. It's a painful and long process to learn and accept this.

Although what you suggest is good, and I think it's great that you are in that place yourself, I'm sure I don't have to remind you that it probably took you a while. Again, this is a process and one that takes time. These text conversations appear to have happened between March 26th and 27th, 2020. The Hammers hadn't even filed for divorce yet. As I wrote above, Effie may have still thought they were together and would be together after the divorce, and she didn't even know about the other women.
