The Netflix series is a great fucking watch. I love how she casually discusses her Calder cuff links. I saw a pair that looked very close to hers go for auction around 10k. His work goes for a lot and they weren't knock offs. She's not shy about liking nice things. She plays the "I' don't have any money, I need to win the lottery" thing a bit much for my taste, otherwise she's pretty fucking fabulous.

She was pretty cute when young. What I want to know is how this very young woman from a working class family in NJ ended up meeting ALL of these incredibly famous people from every part of the fame spectrum at such a young age? She didn't have incredible beauty as foot in the door. She didn't have a high profile job, certainly not early on (cabbie, housekeeper). She didn't come from a well connected family. I'm hoping she goes into it more, but I'm almost done watching and she hasn't so far. Granted I'm not watching the episodes in order so maybe I've skipped the one where she explains it.

I despise Spike Lee and it was fun seeing her one-upping him with quiet glee in a fee clips they are in together. E.g. him talking about Ali, her talking about knowing him. Him talking about Mingus, her talking about how he went to her parent's house for Thanksgiving. He was steaming and struggling (and failing) to be a good sport about it. Go Fran!

Things were more egalitarian then. She hooked up with the Warhol crowd early on, and that opened a lot of doors. If you were in Andy Warhol's circle you went places.

I loved Metropolitan Life when it came out decades ago because it seemed to have some fascinating ideas about art, perspective and perception etc etc.

Nowdays Lebowitz is still clever but her onstage monologue schticks just sounds so, so very remeiiscent of Shelley Berman and all those other dog-faced, ancient Yiddish, monologists. With the same Yiddish phrasing, intonations and curses.

I've been watching it today. Its not all schtick and its not 100% cunting. Some of it is just gabbing about the way it was then versus the way it is now. When I was 20 in NYC I had a few old NY friends and I would go visit them and they would tell many things I needed to know about so many things, sometimes I couldn't even imagine the things I didn't know. "Elders". Plus they often had good scotch and one could smoke and they would sometimes play match maker.
