The Gays and Tennis Part 66: end of the season!

so Medvedev won the Paris masters over scandal-plagued Zverev 5-7 6-4 6-1 for his first title of the year, now the 2 are tied with 3 masters each

This week we have a men's event in Sofia but no hometown hero Dimitrov and the ladies are in Linz without defending champ Gauff.

he's too thin

shocking to see Cilic get destroyed by Jonas Forejtek (who?)

by Anonymousreply 4November 10, 2020 4:52 AM

With Forejtek win i just watched some number who show how ahead Felix and Sinner are from their peers.

Wins on an atp main draw from players born in 2000 and under

2000

FAA (62) Wild (7) Molleker (4) Korda (3) Gaston (3) Kuhn (2)

2001

Sinner (25) Nakashima (3) Forejtek (1)

2002

Musetti (5)

2003

Alcaraz (1)

Wild is probably the strangest case because he won a title (the only one of the bunch who won one) but he is not even top 100

by Anonymousreply 5November 10, 2020 6:28 PM

R4 Forejtek was a former junior number one, he won the US Open junior last year.

A lot of potential but pretty awful year till this victory. With this win he jumps to number 355 in the ranking

by Anonymousreply 6November 10, 2020 6:29 PM

Do you refer to Wild Card?

by Anonymousreply 7November 10, 2020 6:40 PM

No, to Thiago Seyboth Wild

by Anonymousreply 8November 10, 2020 6:59 PM

Shapo beaten by Albot

by Anonymousreply 9November 10, 2020 8:46 PM

And Felix is on the verge of losing with Caruso.

This draw was supposed to be perfect for him winning his first title

by Anonymousreply 10November 11, 2020 6:06 PM

And he lost

by Anonymousreply 11November 11, 2020 6:11 PM

yikes the Sofia draw has completely fallen apart. At this point I'd expect the winner of de Minaur/Sinner to take the title.

FAA losing to Caruso is another headscratcher he must be tired after the last several weeks. His last 2 losses were quite poor

by Anonymousreply 12November 11, 2020 7:55 PM

It's not only that he lose to Caruso (who had a pretty good year) it's that he didn't even have the chance to win a set.

He needs to rest and start next season at the best possible level. He needs to win a tournament as soon as possible and reach at least quarterfinals on a GS to really believe in his chances

The ATP Finals draw is out:

[bold]Group Tokyo[/bold]

Novak Djokovic

Daniil Medvedev

[bold]Group London[/bold]

Rafael Nadal

Dominic Thiem

Stefanos Tsitsipas

Andrey Rublev

wow Schwartzman is in with the 3 assholes. He'll likely be the pass around bottom but I hope he can somehow reach the SF.

I really want to see how improved Rublev is. I'd love to see him blast Nadal off the court

by Anonymousreply 16November 12, 2020 4:40 PM

Go, Diego!!!!

by Anonymousreply 17November 12, 2020 4:45 PM

why tokyo????????

by Anonymousreply 18November 12, 2020 5:31 PM

Diego has very little chances no matter the group. This is not the type of surface he likes and the rest are better on indoor hardcourts.

Tsitsipas better bring last year level or he will lose a lot of points.

I think there are good chances that Nole and Rafa get eliminated before semifinals

I think the first year-end championships were held in Tokyo in 1970. So it's the 50th edition this year

Berrettini and Shapovalov are the alternates, Monfils and Raonic declined

Melzer/Roger Vasselin are the last double team to qualify for London Finals as they won their semifinal in Sofia. Even if they win the final, Murray/Skupski can't pass them now

by Anonymousreply 25November 13, 2020 7:03 PM

by Anonymousreply 26November 13, 2020 7:28 PM

I so want Nadal to win the Finals so he can get that monkey off his back. But no way he wins this.

by Anonymousreply 27November 13, 2020 7:33 PM

He'll be lucky if he makes semifinals.

If he wins against Rublev he has a big chance of making at least semifinals because i can't see Tsitsipas defeating him (unless he is in better form than in recent tournaments).

Of course his match against Rublev is difficult to predict, he crushed Andrey the only time they played but that was ages ago and Rublev is playing very well on indoor hardcourts.

Anyway he has more chances in his group than with Medvedev and Zverev

It’s doubles match.

by Anonymousreply 30November 13, 2020 8:46 PM

Sinner won the first set on the final 64

by Anonymousreply 31November 14, 2020 12:53 PM

I think Sinner’s one of the most interesting youngsters in ages. Destined for greatness.

by Anonymousreply 32November 14, 2020 12:55 PM

I think the same. His groundstrokes are very clean and he is a very pleasurable player to watch. I think he'll be a top 20 player soon.

He won't be seeded in Australia, so a seeded player will suffer for that

by Anonymousreply 33November 14, 2020 1:10 PM

and Pospisil won the second one 63

Vasek is having a pretty good year

by Anonymousreply 34November 14, 2020 1:25 PM

Since second set, Sinner is making tons of errors in the first shot after the service

by Anonymousreply 35November 14, 2020 1:29 PM

Sinners wins 7-6

by Anonymousreply 36November 14, 2020 2:24 PM

I agree R32. Sinner could have an incredible career.

by Anonymousreply 38November 14, 2020 2:44 PM

Sinner is fun to watch. I'd love to see him draw Nadal, Djokovic or Zverev in the first round of next year's AO and knock them out.

Pospisil is now a 3 time loser in finals. Who knows how many more chances he'll have since he's 30

by Anonymousreply 39November 14, 2020 6:58 PM

Agree with the Sinner love. He appears to have "it." Love his red hair too although it is currently shapeless.

by Anonymousreply 40November 14, 2020 7:09 PM

would be funny to see Murray play Sinner next year

old red vs. new red

by Anonymousreply 41November 14, 2020 7:12 PM

Murray should just retire. He will get crushed by Sinner.

by Anonymousreply 49November 15, 2020 6:41 PM

so far Rublev is still being 1 dimensional as ever, unable to deal with Nadal's heavy topspin. Just like last week he lost to Wawrinka. I would have thought playing Nadal indoors would have given him more of a chance

Nadal is playing well though

by Anonymousreply 50November 15, 2020 7:53 PM

It was only one break, but the truth is he had no break points and he only put pressure in one of Nadal's serves

by Anonymousreply 51November 15, 2020 7:55 PM

And Rublev's starts the second set losing his serve.

If he is not able to cause trouble to Rafa on this surface there's no hope for him against Nadal

by Anonymousreply 52November 15, 2020 8:02 PM

miserable opening game in the second by Rublev

by Anonymousreply 53November 15, 2020 8:02 PM

Nadal is going to be in semis, Tsitsipas always have trouble against him and now he'll have to play with a lot of pressure

by Anonymousreply 54November 15, 2020 8:16 PM

Nadal is playing well but very disappointing performance from Rublev. He's improved this year but clearly struggles against players who don't hit with the usual amount of spin

by Anonymousreply 55November 15, 2020 8:35 PM

Nadal played very well today. It was surprising...,

by Anonymousreply 56November 15, 2020 8:43 PM

by Anonymousreply 58November 15, 2020 11:01 PM

by Anonymousreply 59November 16, 2020 4:30 AM

Novaxx and li'l Diego. I have seen training sessions more competitive than this match. And Novaxx does a little longer praying to heaven and the boobs out are still directed to the empty stands. He is the Momma Rose of the Tennis world.

by Anonymousreply 60November 16, 2020 2:34 PM

R58 Come on, she is hot on a cheap way, he is homely with an awful personality

by Anonymousreply 61November 16, 2020 6:23 PM

I knew Schwartzman would be useless at this tournament. He's fun to watch on clay and outdoor hard but faster surfaces he's helpless.

by Anonymousreply 62November 16, 2020 6:43 PM

The worst part is that he started the match pretty well, he was the one who got the break first.

I have the feeling Nole is going to suffer with Zverev and Medvedev.

Probably Rafa will get in trouble with Thiem, but he has a very clear h2h against Tsitsipas and Stefanos is not at his best right now

by Anonymousreply 63November 16, 2020 7:08 PM

Team Daniil. Can't stand even looking at that git Zverev.,

by Anonymousreply 64November 16, 2020 7:29 PM

as much as I don't like Medvedev, I'll take him over an alleged abuser any day

by Anonymousreply 65November 16, 2020 7:53 PM

Playing like that Nole is going to destroy them

by Anonymousreply 66November 16, 2020 7:54 PM

That was a pretty dismal affair. The only good thing, David Ferrer still looks great.

by Anonymousreply 67November 16, 2020 8:43 PM

Med unfollowed Zverev on insta. ouch!

by Anonymousreply 68November 16, 2020 9:34 PM

Oooh, do tell, r68. Why do you think he did that?

by Anonymousreply 69November 16, 2020 9:39 PM

Med's a character. Sometimes good, sometimes bad, but always a character, I like that. And his strokes/game are unique and sort of funky.

by Anonymousreply 70November 16, 2020 9:42 PM

FWIW, R69, I think that Zverev’s ex said that he beat her because she was taking too long talking to Medvedev’s wife instead of promptly returning to the hotel with him.

by Anonymousreply 71November 16, 2020 9:45 PM

If Medvedev dislikes him the rest of the Russian gang will soon follow. I doubt Zverev has many friends left on tour.

by Anonymousreply 84November 18, 2020 3:37 AM

It looks like Djokovic and Pospisil are now asking to be reinstated/reelected onto the ATP Players' Council. If true, this means that their attempt to form an alternative players' union has failed, and if it has failed there are probably only two possible reasons:

1) players aren't interested in alternatives to the ATP

2) players don't trust Djokovic to organize/run an alternative structure to the ATP.

Either way, egg/face/Djokovic.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 85November 18, 2020 11:52 AM

They drummed you out of the PTPA, so you come crawling back to the Player’s Council. But the ATP doesn't go for booze and dope. Now get out of my way, I've got a man waiting for me.

Roddick's pornstache is ridiculous. But, I'm here for it.

by Anonymousreply 104November 19, 2020 4:40 PM

I hope Tsitsipas beats Nadal today. If he can't beat him on this surface, that would be ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 105November 19, 2020 5:01 PM

I had a feeling Rublev would defeat Thiem today.

by Anonymousreply 106November 19, 2020 6:09 PM

Of course Rublev was going to win. Thiem relax once he gets what he wants and you need to put your all to defeat Rublev nowadays.

R105 Tsitsipas could defeat Nadal in any surface, the problem is Nadal can do exactly the same but with better chances. I don't think Stefanos is in good enough form to pull a surprise

by Anonymousreply 107November 19, 2020 6:35 PM

Stefanos is good enough but he lacks the killer instinct.

by Anonymousreply 108November 19, 2020 6:38 PM

by Anonymousreply 109November 19, 2020 7:19 PM

by Anonymousreply 110November 19, 2020 9:50 PM

by Anonymousreply 113November 19, 2020 10:12 PM

Hooray for Rafa! GOAT!

by Anonymousreply 114November 19, 2020 10:17 PM

You would think that Novaxx match would be in the afternoon/evening and the Rublev in the morning.... does anyone know why?

by Anonymousreply 115November 20, 2020 12:34 PM

The Djokovic match IS on in the afternoon.

by Anonymousreply 116November 20, 2020 1:20 PM

It is on right now vs Zverev (afternoon in Europe, early morning in the US), prime time (Friday evening in Europe, afternoon in the US) is reserved fro Medvedev vs. Li'l Diego, a match that has no consequences whatsoever.

by Anonymousreply 117November 20, 2020 1:51 PM

Another Djokodal final?

by Anonymousreply 118November 20, 2020 3:13 PM

by Anonymousreply 119November 20, 2020 3:30 PM

by Anonymousreply 120November 20, 2020 4:12 PM

by Anonymousreply 121November 20, 2020 4:26 PM

It's a shame Zverev didn't win. It would have been nice to see him beat someone that wasn't his girlfriend.

by Anonymousreply 122November 20, 2020 4:30 PM

so it's all on Thiem and Medvedev whether they can stop the endless domination of Nadal and Djokovic.

Melzer/R-V qualify for the semifinals along with....Granollers/Zaballos....let's see if G/Z play tomorrow

by Anonymousreply 124November 20, 2020 7:28 PM

R113 Tsitsipas is not in good form, as simple as that. He spends too much time in social media instead of improving his fitness.

It happened the same against Nole in Roland Garros, it's not normal that you end exhausted when your rivel (which is more than ten years older) is in way better shape at the end of the match.

I want new players winning big titles but most of then doesn't have the hunger that Rafa or Nole had when they were their age

by Anonymousreply 125November 20, 2020 7:53 PM

R118 I'm not that sure. Nole has to play a lot better he is playing if he wants to defeat Thiem.

And Medvedev is playing really well, he choked last year against Nadal, but he was dominating that much clearly before failing big time

by Anonymousreply 126November 20, 2020 7:58 PM

Daniil is looking good tonight; playing well.

Thiem team!

Domicakes team!

by Anonymousreply 139November 21, 2020 5:40 PM

Yeah, R136, Thiem seems to love to complicate things for himself. Think about the US Open when he played like shit for two sets. In the second set tiebreak today, Thiem blew those match points and couldn't get his serve in toward the end of the tiebreaker. Really frustrating to watch him do that.

I hope Medvedev can take out Nadal. What I'd really like to see, though, is two young guys battling it out in the Australian Open final and not one of the Big 3 winning it. But it's probably going to be one of the Big 3. It was pathetic the way all those bitches rolled over for Nadal at the French.

by Anonymousreply 140November 21, 2020 6:11 PM

R136 He was 4-0 in the last tie break, and he won. He won the last 5 tie breaks against Nadal.

Nole is probably the best player on tie breaks, it was a tough match, but Domi won.

And Medvedev has chances against Nadal, he was winning quite easily last year before choking big time

by Anonymousreply 141November 21, 2020 6:23 PM

R140 To be fair, this was one of those years were Nadal is very superior to his rivals at RG. The only one who put pressure on him was Sinner, unfortunately he was unable to deal with the pressure on the key momments

Djokovic out, though Thiem was down 0/4 in the third set tiebreak. Now let’s hope Medvedev takes out Nadal.

by Anonymousreply 144November 21, 2020 7:09 PM

Melzer/Roger-Vasselin have more lives than cats in this tournament

by Anonymousreply 145November 21, 2020 7:36 PM

I don't know, Medvedev is putting some pressure on Rafa's serve (while winning quite easily his own) but when you miss opportunities against Rafa you end regretting it

by Anonymousreply 146November 21, 2020 7:52 PM

And as expected at the first opportunity he tanks his serve

by Anonymousreply 147November 21, 2020 8:00 PM

Rafa team or Medvedev team?

by Anonymousreply 148November 21, 2020 8:02 PM

Medvedev's forehand sometimes is a fluff shot that sits up waiting to be whacked and Nadal is whacking it. He needs to flatten it out more.

by Anonymousreply 149November 21, 2020 8:02 PM

At least Daniil reacted 3-0 for him in the second set

by Anonymousreply 150November 21, 2020 8:16 PM

But again after wasting break points Nadal break his serve

by Anonymousreply 151November 21, 2020 8:34 PM

this has turned into a very weird match by both

by Anonymousreply 152November 21, 2020 9:45 PM

Daniil with the break

by Anonymousreply 153November 21, 2020 9:47 PM

Nadal served at 5-4 in the second for the match. From that point on he's had loads of uncharacteristic misses both forehand and backhand

Medvedev has hung around and is finally being more aggressive. For most of the match he was just reacting to Nadal

by Anonymousreply 154November 21, 2020 9:49 PM

Daniil

by Anonymousreply 155November 21, 2020 9:55 PM

Wow, Med took it.

Domi v Daniil, that's good shit.

by Anonymousreply 156November 21, 2020 9:55 PM

an error ridden finish for Nadal

glad he's out but that was bizarre

by Anonymousreply 157November 21, 2020 9:55 PM

nadal was very strange today. After he failed to serve for the match....lots of strange errors for him. I have a feeling that Thiem wins tomorrow.

by Anonymousreply 158November 21, 2020 9:56 PM

the top 10 guys have now proven they can stop the big 3 at every event except slams. That's the next step

I do think there is hope for the 2021 AO though

by Anonymousreply 180November 22, 2020 7:56 PM

Poor Domicakes.

by Anonymousreply 181November 22, 2020 7:57 PM

R180, that’s the thing: Medvedev is, at least, very distinctive. I’ve been watching Thiem for years now and I have no idea who he is. He doesn’t seem have a personality that comes across on court.

by Anonymousreply 182November 22, 2020 8:03 PM

med has personality? lol

by Anonymousreply 183November 22, 2020 8:05 PM

I'll take Thiem's bland personality over Medvedev's abrasive, abusive one any day.

by Anonymousreply 184November 22, 2020 8:06 PM

R182 Curiously he seems to be one of the most liked players and it's not like Nadal or Federer have big personalities. Thiem has a big game and that should be enough

by Anonymousreply 185November 22, 2020 8:09 PM

I thought that Thiem was going to win it.....but crazy Medvedev won. I do not like him but I think his tantrums are entertaining. I hope that one day we can have simultaneous subtitling of whatever he says during the match.

by Anonymousreply 186November 22, 2020 8:25 PM

Medvedev was able to withstand the barrage of Thiem's winners and capitalized on his errors in the second and third sets. He also somehow was more consistent than Djokovic and Nadal this week. Not my favorite style of play but he just defeated the top 3 players in 1 week. That's a good stat

don't like his personality either but I'm just glad it was not another Nadal vs. Djokovic borefest

by Anonymousreply 187November 22, 2020 8:38 PM

People want another nadal/djoko match, they dont want thiem/ zverev like at us open or thiem/med

by Anonymousreply 188November 22, 2020 9:03 PM

I definitely don't want another nadal-djoko match. I've seen it enough.

by Anonymousreply 189November 22, 2020 9:48 PM

I think Med is fascinating, his game I mean. It's not something I've seen before, I'm not quite sure how to describe it.

by Anonymousreply 190November 22, 2020 9:48 PM

R189 it is not only about match. It is about bein goat, djoko will get 18th slam or not, nadal will 21th being the best of all time or maybe fed will win being 40. Nobody cares about match like rublev/ tsitsipas

by Anonymousreply 191November 22, 2020 9:51 PM

I seem to be the only person who likes Daniil including his looks and personality. He at least has some charisma and does well speaking. I'll take him over someone like Naomi Osaka every day of the week.

by Anonymousreply 192November 22, 2020 10:26 PM

I think Medvedev is handsome. He also seems very likable in interviews.

by Anonymousreply 193November 22, 2020 11:01 PM

Medvedev reminds me of Tomic in terms of look, particularly in the face.

by Anonymousreply 194November 22, 2020 11:33 PM

I like Daniil too!

by Anonymousreply 195November 23, 2020 12:41 AM

Fed will be lucky to get one more slam. Father time is undefeated. Especially to athletes over 40.

by Anonymousreply 196November 23, 2020 1:23 AM

I'd like to see Fed get lucky like Nadal has the last few years. So many Slam draws fell apart or players just handed the match to Nadal over and over. Fed should be at 21 but he totally blew it against Djokovic at Wimbledon in 2019.

Speaking of blowing it, Thiem is so frustrating to watch. He has the match in hand and then starts blowing it. He's admitted he gets tight. He needs to overcome that.

by Anonymousreply 197November 23, 2020 2:35 PM

Also, now that the AO is in question, I wonder how it will affect older players. If it had been a normal year, Novaxx could have easily won Wimbledon. Federer (injured) would have dropped to... 30? and would have had a far more difficult path to a GS. Covid worked well for him since it saved all his points from 2019. I think Covid will place some kind of invisible asterisks next to some players.

by Anonymousreply 198November 23, 2020 3:25 PM

I want to watch a GS without a big 3 and with all of them in the draw.

I want a reminiscent of late 90's wta with new players and the old ones fighting for GS.

And i want young new players making an impact next year, i want they put some pressure on the Tsitsipas, Zverev and company. Some of them think they'll win GS when the big 3 retires and i want some new players showing them they better rush to do it

Former New York mayor and tennis fan/supporter David Dinkins has died.

by Anonymousreply 200November 24, 2020 4:35 AM

Dinkins remembers his friend Arthur Ashe.

R198, without COVID-adjusted rankings for 2020 events and factoring in only those tournament that did get played, Federer's current rank would be #27. Raonic would be #9, PCB #10, Garin #12, Ruud #14, FAA #16, Coric #18, and Sinner #24. Berrettini would have plummeted from #10 to #31 and Fognini from #17 to #63. The rankings adjusted for COVID are logic free.

by Anonymousreply 206November 25, 2020 7:42 PM

Let's be honest, i don't understand how the US Open was able to manage the tournament and the austrlians are having so much trouble.

Two weeks of delay is not that much, but during a while they talked about playing in april, which means push all the clay season.

And i hope they play qualifications, because they were talking about skipping them (like they'll do with the junior tournament)

by Anonymousreply 212November 26, 2020 12:14 AM

The dumbest thing about 2020 was the French Open happening 2 weeks after the US Open. The French hate Nadal, but their choice guaranteed Nadal another French Open. All his main competition was gassed from a grueling US Open. Way to go, stupid Frenchies!

by Anonymousreply 213November 26, 2020 12:48 PM

R213 Sorry but nothing of that is true.

First, french hated Nadal, now they simply recognize that he is the best player on their tournament by far. The times they cheered his opponents are long gone. Maybe if he plays against a french or Federer, but not against any other player.

Second, the conditions of this Roland Garros were clearly against Rafa. The time of the year, the roof, the lack of clay season. He was not even playing that well on Rome, so saying anything was made to guarantee another Nadal's win is ridiculous

by Anonymousreply 214November 26, 2020 1:42 PM

Sure, R214. Nadal not playing the US Open while his main rivals played and were tired had NOTHING to do with it. Uh huh. I have a lot of French friends who are tennis fans. They all say most French people hate Nadal while still respecting him. I'm the same way. I respect him, but it doesn't change that I can't stand him.

LOL to your saying the conditions at RG were against Nadal. Clay, no matter what time of year or lack of clay season, ALWAYS favors Nadal. And he played fine in Rome. Diego just played practically the match of his life. Nadal is the greatest on clay ever. He was always the favorite coming into that tournament. The fact that the US Open was played two weeks before and the only men who could take him down were gassed just raised those odds even higher and all but guaranteed another French for him. Also the fact that Djokovic did not show up with his A game in the final helped a lot.

This year, I'd love to see someone finally take it to Nadal at the French, even if he loses. So many just give up, like Djokovic did this year and has in the past.

by Anonymousreply 215November 26, 2020 5:11 PM

I have lived in Paris for 9 years and I have been many times to RG. At the beginning, the French hated Nadal because they wanted Federer to win...but now the French love Nadal. Go and check L'équipe or other French newspapers the day after Nadal wins.

by Anonymousreply 217November 26, 2020 6:48 PM

R278 I know but I wanted a sure fire bet.

by Anonymousreply 279December 15, 2020 7:44 PM

R275, my predictions

Gramps Fed will retire after early losses at Wimbledon and the US Open

Granny Vee will be left off the Olympic team, Serena will kick up a fuss and threaten not to play, and then Vee will be added to the team. She'll lose in the first round and then finally retire.

Nadal will win yet another French Open sending the tennis fans into a coma caused by sheer boredom.

Osaka will return to number one and then go into freefall again for a while.

Kenin will stay Top 5 and make another major final but lose again. Barty will flop and drop out of the Top 10.

Gauff will lose and cry after every Grand Slam loss.

Djokovic will not win a single Slam. Nadal will win the US Open with yet another creampuff draw and a joke like Kevin Anderson or Kyle Edmund as a finals opponent.

Misery will retire and have an affair with Kevin Spacey.

Martina Navratilova will make a singles comeback and win a match. In her second match she'll lose to a MTF, say something snarky and get banned from future WTA events thanks to the woke lynch mobs of Twitter.
